Sunday Ratings: NCAA Tourney Lifts CBS To Victory, Fox Captures Youth Demo

Posted on 30 March 2009 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard CBS ABC FOX NBC Uni CW
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.1/8 2.8/7 2.6/7 2.5/7 1.2/3 0.4/1
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 2.0/6 2.3/7 3.0/9 1.7/5 1.2/4 0.2/1

Lifted by a 17 minute overrun of the NCAA Tournament, CBS carried the night in the adults 18-49 demo with an average 3.1 rating. With most of its animation line up intact, Fox was able to win the adults 18-34 demo with a 3.0 rating.

Two bits of good news for CBS from the NCAA Tournament yesterday. First it ran about 17 minutes into primetime, giving the network enough of a boost to top the 18-49 demo. Second, Michigan State won to prevent a 75% Big East Final Four and keep a “hometown favorite” in the Final Four. CBS didn’t do quite as well as last Sunday, when NCAA basketball ran even longer and Obama was on 60 Minutes, but much better than two Sundays ago.

ABC’s early line up performed well, but with a Desperate Housewives repeat at 10pm, it was prone to slip below its average for the night. Without the late competition from ABC, NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice was up sharply in its last hour, and helped boost the network overall from last week. Fox, perhaps boosted by the non-standard ABC schedule as well, was up several demo ticks in both adult demos from last week as Family Guy’s Star Trek:TNG themed episode ruled the demos at 9pm.

Update: Another of our data providers had the PGA: Armold Palmer Invitational listed as the NBC show from 7-8, but the same numbers. Likely that aired in the East and Dateline aired elsewhere. I have changed the table to include the PGA event, but it was possibly different in other time zones.

Note that because the live NCAA Tournament ran over into prime-time by a reported 17 minutes in the Eastern time zone, these CBS fast affiliate numbers are prone to adjustment, for more information see below. Also, the shows indicated for different time periods in the table below are likely what was seen in the Eastern Time zone only.

You can see overnight reports for past Sundays here to compare.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Tyler says:

ABC needs to quit having all these breaks in between shows! if the think that the reaks will keep viewers coming back, then they a sorely mistaken!!! most people forget instead of tune in! lets hope next season DH Grey’s and all of ABC’s shows go on shorter hiatus!

  2. Julia says:

    I thought NBC had golf?

  3. SoCal says:

i really hope the Unit gets renewed…it keeps getting better this season!

Nice to see Family Guy rule the demos as well…2 good eps in a row for them

  4. Michael says:

OK, Obama wasn’t on and Kings still did horribly, even getting beaten by Univision in the demo. Now does everyone agree that Kings is doomed?

  5. Dennis says:

Wow, a rerun of The Simpsons clearly beats new episodes of King of the Hill, I’m starting to understand those Fox programmers.

  6. Bill Gorman says:

Julia, they very well may have, although our data says Dateline early. I will amend the post.

  7. SoCal says:

O, and Kings is an embarassment…nice job Silverman

  8. Julia says:

Futon Critic agrees with your data, but here’s what Berman had to say: Although NBC plenty of mileage in the 7 p.m. hour care of the Bayhill Golf Tournament at a second-place 7.5/13 in the overnights, week three of lead-out Kings did not benefit with a series-low (and fourth-place) 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m.

  9. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

Dennis, it’s actually been happening for about a decade where the rerun of The Simpsons at 8:30 nearly beats (or often tops) the brand new episode. The show has the sort of young male “tune in, tune out” audience that arrives late to the game at 8:30 and sees an episode they haven’t watched before. The show certainly repeats well.

  10. Chief says:

FIRE BEN SILVERMAN! FIRE BEN SILVERMAN! FIRE BEN SILVERMAN!

He makes Dawn Ostroff look like the most knowledgeable and competent executive in the world by comparison.

  11. Julia says:

Michael, you’re crazy. Kings is clearly growing. People just are still learning about it. Just wait. Any day now.

  12. a says:

Many people are saying that The Unit’s series finale will air the last in April 2009 – they got this “info” from CBS/Unit insiders who’ve “confirmed” that CBS has already cancelled The Unit and that the sets are being torn down. Is this true (series finale in April)?

  13. Hot Pocket says:

Its really just time for NBC to clean house and move USA Network’s Bonnie Hammer up to run the network next season. They really don’t have a clue over there.

  14. the128boy says:

it’s amazing that after being brought back from apparent cancellation a couple of years ago, The Apprentice is still this potent. those numbers are good in general, not just for NBC. i wonder what kind of numbers it could pull if it had a halfway decent lead-in. The amazing Race had a strangely good night… i wonder where that bump came from.

  15. Bill Gorman says:

a, we have no “inside” information about any announcements or set destruction. Based on its ratings, I have been predicting The Unit’s cancelation since last fall though, so none of that would surprise me.

  16. earl says:

star trek: the next gen voices on the episode helped family guy.

  17. Kings Forever says:

I love Kings. Can’t wait for season two! When will that air?

  18. Celo says:

Bill, why no mention of the Amazing Race basically winning the entire night (granted with the aid of 60 Minutes’ overrun)? 14 million viewers kills the competition, and their numbers rise each week. Do I detect a bias against reality?

  19. Jon says:

I agree with Hot Pocket that NBC should clean house and get rid of Silverman and Zucker, it’s a surprise that he lasted so long at NBC and I also agree that Bonnie Hammer should take over either of their jobs.

As for The Unit, I think it’s a victim of CBS doing so well this season. Had it been drawing the ratings on say FOX or NBC, it would have been renewed.

  20. Tyler says:

Bill, do you know if ABC has any new dramas next season? If so, what are they’re names, and when does Harper’s Island prmiere?

  21. Julia says:

Looks like moving the viewer numbers all the way to the right didn’t help.

Celo, Amazing Race did not win the night in the demo. There’s nothing special about those numbers. Performed well, but not excessively so.

  22. Julia says:

Tyler, ABC most certainly will have new dramas next season. If you want to take a look at their pilot prospects go here. I doubt even ABC knows what dramas they will be picking up for sure yet, so Bill certainly doesn’t.

  23. elliott says:

does that mean that outta d 8mil dat watched family guy 4mill of those were 18-49?

  24. Riff Rafferty says:

“I love Kings. Can’t wait for season two! When will that air?”

After season three. They’re jumping around in time with this one, so all fifteen seasons won’t air in order.

I still remember this inane post on Deadly Hollywood Dailine last year (the thread was about how incompetent NBC’s execs were). The person trashed NBC’s entire freshman class, with the exception of “Kings” — which, while shamelessly shilling, they predicted would be NBC’s saving grace. I find their prediction to be highly accurate; “Kings” saved NBC from a zero rating Sundays @ 8:00.

  25. Bill Gorman says:

Celo, I hesitate to make any conclusions about individual CBS show performances last night because of the live overrun and that the numbers are likely to be revised.

  26. Bill Gorman says:

Tyler, we don’t track pilot developments, but I bet some of our commenters do. Harper’s Island premiere is April 9.

  27. Julia says:

LOL, Riff. The best I could come up with in response to when King’s season two will air is that it’ll be on the astral plane.

  28. Bill Gorman says:

elliott, no the ratings points are percentages of the total US TV population in that group that watched the show. A 4.2 rating means that an average of 4.2% of the 18-49 year olds in the US watched the entire show.

  29. R.G. says:

Yaaaawwwnnn for Sunday Nights – all garbage –

…Sunday nights (if at home) is DVD night – revisited the movie “Outbreak” with Dustin Hoffman & Rene Russo – good movie still after 14 years!

  30. R.G. says:

    ….oh and…Dear NBC…your “KINGS” have been…”dethrowned”.

  31. Anthony says:

I gave “Kings” a try last night. Unfortunately, being late to the party didn’t help since I had no idea what was going on. If it makes it to Season 2 (doubtful) I’ll catch up on DVD over the summer. But, I’m not planning any large blocks of time around that idea.

It’s sort of like “Heroes,” in that you have to be in at the beginning. Even though “Heroes” is very good now after a slump in season 2, they can’t attract many new viewers because it’s too difficult to catch up to the story.

  32. cool says:

^ Or maybe millions of people realized that Heroes is a horrible show.

  33. Julie says:

Desperate Housewives actually repeated better than it usually does and there are less viewers over all this year for DH!!!!

  34. Jocor says:

The Unit is the only show I’ve ever seen since maybe Star Trek The Next Generation, that gets BETTER as it goes along.

I thought yesterday was GREAT. Yet CBS hasn’t really ever seemed to appreciate this show as much. Probably because it doesn’t fit into their typical CBS mold.

The Unit pulled in 18 million viewers it’s first year, it has star quality. You’d think they’d want to try to get some of those viewers back.

Although I strongly believe if the Unit now was the same show as the Unit then, none of those viewers would have stopped watching.

  35. Tony says:

So which network is being run worse? CW or NBC?

    It is a tough one.

I can’t fault NBC for trying Kings. I think it’s a good show that on another network or on cable might find an audience. What I do fault about NBC is how they handled just about everything else in the last 2 years. Again, how can we expect a serialized drama to grab a large audience on a network that is at an all time low in viewers? It had no chance.

The CW continues to try for the young girl demo but the shows that seem to be it’s strongest do not necessarily attract this demographic. So instead of branching out to try to attract other audiences they are continuing to shove down our throats more of the same including a spin off from the low rated and overated Gossip Girl and another spinoff of a Fox show from the 90’s??

    So…who’s worse?

  36. R.G. says:

Hmmm…looking out my window – I see Silvermann (NBC) and Dawn (CW) having lunch…I wonder “who’s asking who” about a job…

  37. Jim says:

Watched first 2 eps of kings last night. Wasn’t bad. I actually found myself getting into the story and characters.

And someone please tell CBS to keep The Unit. Every season we need some espionage drama, military spy stuff.

  38. Hot Pocket says:

Jon, They should definitely get Zucker out of there as I point the blame at him more than Silverman since he was the one who crashed the network into ground starting in the 2004-05 season and got worse and worse every year. Bonnie would definitely turn things around as she has done with USA making it the #1 cable network the last three years in a row and still going strong. I’m surprised myself that Zucker has lasted this long too.

The Unit should definitely move to FOX and pair up with 24 next season.

The Brothers & Detectives pilot on ABC sounds like if marketed right to the young kids of America, it could be a hit for them in a 8pm timeslot. Another strategy that ABC should do is move Brothers & Sisters to 8pm or 9pm somewhere on the schedule. If they can get B&S to air on Thursdays at 8pm right before GA and PP that would be a genius move for ABC.

  39. stacy says:

Any news on how Breaking Bad has been doing in the ratings?

  40. Julia says:

Stacy, the season premiere was above last season’s average for Breaking Bad, but I don’t know if any other episodes’ ratings have been reported here.

  41. Tony says:

    Breaking Bad fan here too

I read the same Stacy but haven’t heard anything else about Breaking Bad. I think this is good news for a season 3 because it would have to completely fall apart in the ratings for AMC not to give the show a 3rd season with the accolades Cranston has been getting.

  42. Hot Pocket says:

Tony you made some great points. I think the worse run network is NBC just b/c they fell off so hard, off the map completely with only a few hits that get over 10 million viewers in their arsenal. NBC was a #1 network just a decade ago and was still competitive earlier in the decade until 2004 ironically was the same year they lost Friends and Fraiser and just haven’t found their way ever since b/c of horrible management. I point the blame to one person Jeff Zucker, Ben tried to do some creative things to help build the network but it didn’t work out that way at all b/c one man was still there and that’s that loser Jeff Zucker. They aren’t even trying to improve anything and if Jay fails, that will be the worst decision ever made by any network executive.

The CW has been horribly managed from day one and they have some pretty dumb people running that network too. You can’t really run a major network to just one demo. If its going to be a major network then it needs to be dedicated to all demos. The CW is simply a free cable network that will die in a year or two. They really should’ve just kept UPN and The WB apart. At least the ratings were better for each network. Another network not showing any signs of improvement.

CBS, ABC, and FOX all the only ones who are trying to better themselves each year and I’m really impressed with ABC in how they are aggressively trying to improve from their losing performances on the schedule.

  43. ruudisss says:

Hey, will this rating order stay forever? I know that overall viewers mean nothing to TV executives, but I always cared only about overall numbers and this order is really complicated for a short-minded boy like me! Oldies and children are TV viewers too!

  44. Alex says:

Not to sound like I’m defending the NBC executives but I’m not sure I’ll ever understand some of the criticism levelled at them. Its true that aspects of the network have been horribly run in recent times but at the same time there’s an inevitability to some of what’s happened to them – the television industry is cyclical and even money says that in a couple of years CBS is going to be sinking when they’re big hits start to dry up. The same thing is slowly starting to happen to ABC now, the big scripted hits aren’t as big as they once where and they can’t find a new hit to save their lives at the moment. Its what happens in television.

Undoubtedly NBC made the situation worse for themselves with some of the decisions they made but right now I think they’re doing the only thing they can, green light new shows and hope something hits. If you look at the variety of shows that NBC has debuted over the past two-years there’s a lot going on and they’re just throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks and right now that’s really all they can do. Until they find a show that hits there’s not much else they can do besides build up a slate of good programming so that when you find a hit there’s good shows across the rest of the week – although that’s where they’re failing right now.

  45. Bill Gorman says:

ruudisss, the longevity of this layout is up for discussion, but all the old numbers are still there, nothing has been removed.

For the Breaking Bad fans, the top rated episode from the most recent week I have is: 3/22 10pm, 1.129 million viewers. Since we don’t track cable shows as closely (too many of them!) I don’t know how that compares to previous shows/seasons.

  46. elliott says:

do NBC make money off house coz it’s produced by them isn’t it or do theyjust make money off the DVDs if that makes sense

  47. Bill Gorman says:

elliott, NBC Universal makes money selling House to Fox, and they make money selling House in syndication, and they make money from selling DVDs. It’s making them lots of money.

  48. Alex says:

Elliott NBCU (NBC’s parent company) makes money from House.

On a related note you do have to wonder how hard the folks at NBC are kicking themselves for passing on House now…

  49. Ruudisss, Bill cares about minutiae like the order of the data so that what’s more important (18-49 and 18-34 demos) can be stressed. For 98.3% of the people reading these, it probably doesn’t matter. The average viewer numbers are still there, and I’d argue they’re even easier to find than they were before (just look all the way to the right).

Bill may hope that such an order will stave off people saying things like, “but XYZ had 7 million viewers!” and instead, focus on the demos that are more important. I don’t have any hopes of that actually happening, but I don’t see any downside to the current ordering either.

  50. Tom says:

Riff: This is Finke we’re dealing with here: if she had an opportunity to trash Silverman/Zucker over Kings, she’s certainly take it.

Instead, she reported the truth: out of NBC’s 08/09 lineup, Kings was the only show that had any sort of critical regard. That no one is watching the show has little relationship to that statement, however.

  51. Tim says:

So Kings is serialized? It’s on my radar then even though it’s numbers cry cancellation. I’ll take serialized shows any day then those reset shows or reality crap.

  52. Alex says:

On another random note Extreme Makeover built its audience pretty impressively last night. Going from a 2.8 to a 4.2 by the end of the second hour is pretty impressive. Not as impressive as thw twice cancelled Family Guy’s numbers but still…

  53. cool says:

Why ABC keeps the DH repeats at 10pm? IMO, they should put Castle that has potential and it’s the only procedural in that hour.

  54. elliott says:

can’t fox buy house off nbcu

  55. Tony says:

I agree Alex. NBC has to take some risks and some shots and hope they get “the next big show” to hit the airwaves. It may take a lot of trial and error but it has to be done. The question is how much do they dump and how much do they throw up against the wall? We will find out more in a few weeks but my guess is they will be more conservative then aggressive. That may not be the way to go though.

I fear ABC is closing in on where NBC was two years ago. A lot of it’s more successful older shows are starting to catch up to them ratings wise (Lost , Desp Housewives) and so far it has not provided a big scripted hit to go along with these shows and or replace them when the time is right. ABC has to be a little concerned about this as you can only ride Dancin’ so far. The fact that it’s on twice a year already has me concerned of it’s eventual over exposure.

  56. Julia says:

I like the new order, even though I doubt it will actually get the point across to a lot of people.

  57. Hot Pocket says:

I don’t think CBS will be in trouble as long as they continue to recycle their procedurals every year into new ones. Maybe in other areas but not their procedurals.

The serial dramas don’t have a lot of life in them in general and its hard to keep them on air for at least 5 years without them being a hit or at least a solid ratings player.

  58. elliott says:

n if the unit goes to fox do they have to pay CBS for airing it or does it not matter if it’s cancelled

  59. elliott, I think The Unit is a 20th Century Fox produced show. If CBS doesn’t want to pick renew it, another network could pick it up, but it’s unusual where one network picks up another castoff. While it happens sometimes, in recent history it only seems to happen with 30 minute sitcoms (Scrubs from NBC to ABC, for example). It could happen, but if The Unit is canceled by CBS I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

  60. Ike says:

Bill, I hope you won’t mind if I point out that you misspelled “Sundays” at the end of the second paragraph where you said “much better than two Sunday’s ago.” I can’t help it; I always notice apostrophe abuse.

And I LOVE the new numerical layout, with the total viewership de-emphasized by shunting it over to the right.

I’m another Breaking Bad fan, but last night’s ep. was excruciating. But then, it was meant to be. Still, emotionally, that was really really hard to watch, even more than when they liquified a corpse and then it leaked through a floor last season.

Yikes, those are horrible numbers for Kings. Too bad. It got pretty good after the first hour of the pilot, but if NBC had cared at all, they would’ve at least slotted it at 10 behind Apprentice as a lead-in.

  61. Jon says:

Hot Pocket, I agree about Bonnie Hammer. While she’s not perfect and isn’t exactly well liked by Sci-Fi fans, I think she has done a great job at USA and to a lesser extent Sci-Fi. The whole ‘Character Welcome’ thing has worked well with the originals, WWE Raw and off-net shows like House and NCIS.

As for CBS, I think that they’ll be okay but they need to find replacements for aging shows like Cold Case, Without a Trace and even the CSI Franchise. Some of the pilots for this season for CBS sound very good and it will be interesting what they pick up.

  62. Ike, I think all my apostrophe abuse has rubbed off on Bill and I’ve worn Julia down to the point where she doesn’t even notice them!

  63. elliott says:

Robert Ive never seen the unit but iwas jw

  64. Alex says:

Elliot Fox could buy House off of NBCU outright but I doubt NBCU would ever be willing to sell it. I could be wrong (and I’m sure someone will correct me if I am) but I can’t remember an instance when a production company has sold the rights to a hit show to a rival company. What’s interesting is that nobody has suggested that NBC should try and steal House…

  65. the128boy says:

i absolutely love the demo order rather than viewer order. it’s just easier to quickly see who REALLY won the night, rather than who will have a meaningless press release about winning the night.

  66. Ricardo says:

Kings is an awesome show. I love it. It’s a pity it is already dead…

It kinda didn’t had a chance. NBC is having such bad ratings and Kings is an heavily serialized drama on Sunday.

That show would be awesome if it aired on a cable network, but it’s budget is definitely not that low…

PS: You could put the blue colors on the table. It’s more eye friendly.

  67. Alex says:

Jon (and others) its worth remembering that not that long ago everyone was saying similar things about NBC – they’ll be fine as long as they find replacements for Friends etc. only the replacements didn’t work out so well.

Personally I think CBS is set up for a potentially bigger fall than even NBC has had and is on because their line-up of shows are so similar you have to imagine that if the bubble bursts on one of them then all of them will follow. Its hard, for example, to imagine a situation where CSI dies but CSI: NY and CSI: Miami don’t follow it.

  68. Julia says:

Ike, I think all my apostrophe abuse has rubbed off on Bill and I’ve worn Julia down to the point where she doesn’t even notice them!

I blame trying to write two papers and do all my reading for the week at the same time as trying NOT to do any of that.

  69. ljo says:

I’m also a fan of the new table. It makes much more sense to have the 18-49 demo numbers as the first column and to have the shows ranked from highest to lowest according to that data.

  70. sam says:

i dont like the chart this was can you change it back to normal??

  71. Hot Pocket says:

Jon, I agree with that statement too b/c Bonnie has done all she could over the years to get USA and Sci-Fi as commercialized as possible. Sci-Fi Channel was never meant to be a long-term solution for NBC Universal that’s why its turning into SyFy to be like USA.

CBS will be okay b/c procedurals rate better than what NBC tried to do. NBC missed completely off the mark with too many serialized shows and abandoning their old comedy viewers.

  72. Shem says:

They, NBC, could try moving Kings to Wednesdays and see how it works out. Just a thought…

  73. Jon says:

True about CBS, but they still have a few holes in their schedules. The Sunday schedule does need a revamp and is it’s third when NBC have NFL and ABC have Desperate Housewives and B&S and the Wednesday 8pm comedies are dragging down Criminal Minds and CSI:NY.

My suggestion wold be to have the NCIS spin-off on Wednesday and move the comedies to Sunday and have The Amazing Race in between runs of Survivor.

  74. Anthony says:

Shem: Wednesday or Tuesday…both are bad TV nights for me. Not into the “reality” shows.
Universal should run “Kings” so that we DVR-less watchers could catch up. I know it’s on NBC.com, but I just can’t bring myself to watch TV shows on my PC.

  75. Riff Rafferty says:

Alex, it’s not hard to imagine at all, since it already happened to CBS once. In the early to mid ’80s, 3/4ths of their dramas were private detective shows. That was all well and good for a while; CBS was #1 and most of them were hits. Then all of a sudden, most of them weren’t (and the one that still was — “Murder She Wrote” — wasn’t a hit with anybody who mattered), and when CBS fell in 1987, they fell HARD.

Tom, Rat Finke has her agenda, and I have mine. Critical regard schmitical regard. If I were going to put my neck on the line to save something from NBC’s landmark 2008-2009 freshman class, it wouldn’t be “Kings,” that’s for sure. It’d be the critically-reviled “Kath & Kim.” That show has cast chemistry and the potential to appeal to a wide audience. “Kings” has neither of these things.

  76. S. says:

I wonder if with the new layout people will finally get that the numbers that matter are the A18-49 demo. Love it, btw.

Then I read that Life on Mars fans are campaigning to save a show that actually has been officially canceled, and understand that I might be hopping to high.

  77. stacy says:

Ike, I felt the same way about last night’s episode of Breaking Bad. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a television show that made me feel so depressed, which I guess means the shows doing something right.

Anyway, the ratings seem lower then Man Men’s average, but then again MM had WAY more publicity. And really there only needs to be at most one more season of the show anyway, with the main character dying and getting closer & closer to being caught, this is not a show that should go on forever.

  78. jay says:

A couple of maybe interesting trivia: DH reruns far better with the 18-49 than with overall viewers, yet (2) DH’s second half-hour lost something like 12% of the demo while Celebrity Apprentice gained in the demo overall from 2.3 to 3.9 or a whopping 75% over its two hour run. Also, kudos obviously to Family Guy.

  79. cool says:

Kudos to Robert with the new layout.

  80. Bill’s idea, not mine. But i’m all for it.

  81. Sylvester says:

I just saw another family guy commercial

Why can i see Simpson commercials like this

  82. a says:

Riff Rafferty, Kath & Kim deserves to be renewed b/c it’s brimming with potential. Potential should ALWAYS be taken into consideration when debating ANY series shelf life. Although not the most important factor, but a crucial one. Would YOU (my fellow TVByTheNumbers participants) renew or greenlit any TV series if YOU thought it had low potential, quality wise?

Kath & Kim could easily attract 2 million more viewers on average (TV: NBC/USA/CNBC/Bravo, DVR, Internet (YouTube/social networking sites/Hulu), DVD). The same goes for The Unit.

Speaking of The Unit, someone at E! (around 6:30pm ET – 3/30/09) is reporting that:
    1. The show’s Executive Producers (Ryan, Vahan Moosekian (I luv that name! LOL), Mamet, just to name a few) were informed of its cancellation around March 15
    2. The series finale will air on the last Sunday in April 2009 (lots of cliffhangers)
    3. The sets began to be torn down last week
    4. According to an inside source, Moonves dislikes the show

Question: How credible is E! News?

  83. H says:

Are the ratings always going to be sorted like this? would rather see the shows with the most viewers listed first, not who won the demos.

  84. Julia says:

H, the demos are what matters. Makes far more sense to sort them this way.

  85. Michael says:

a,how do you measure potential? Kath & Kim premiered with 7.52 million viewers and a 3.2 in the demo and ended with 3.89 million viewers and a 1.7 in the demo. That’s a show that lost almost half its viewers, not a show with a lot of potential.

  86. Jesse says:

I think Kath and Kim has proven that it’s not only a terrible show, quality-wise, but a terrible show ratings-wise. We need not discuss it, it’s as good as gone. Especially with Parks and Recreation coming soon to trounce it in the ratings. Those Office viewers are awfully loyal to anyone involved with their show.

  87. Tyler says:

Thanks Julia and Bill! Julia, looking at the site, i must say, that only two ABC drama’s stick out to me! Empire State and Limelight. Maybe the gods of creativity are shinning down upon them! :)

  88. ABCFanaticMarch2009 says:

I hate when ABC do this repeats and haitus!

When DH comes back it will get 13 million viewers and in 2 weeks it back on 15 million viewers and repeats again! Its killing the ratings!

Good thing when DH/BS/GA/PP/UB comes back with new episodes there will be no repeats up to the season finale!

  89. stacy says:

I’m also a fan of the new layout. H, if you want to see it sorted with the viewres you can just copy into excel & sort it your way.

  90. Sam McLean says:

It’s amusing how many people are slagging Kings.. but have any of these people actually seen it? It’s a great show. It’s only 13 episodes. Considering it’s Ian McShane, what’s the point in cancelling it now. But perhaps it should have been on HBO instead of NBC.

  91. Riff Rafferty says:

“It’s amusing how many people are slagging Kings.. but have any of these people actually seen it? It’s a great show.”

All of this is correct, except for the “It’s a great show” part. “Kings” can’t make up its mind if it wants to be a primetime soap or art-house. So it tries to be both and succeeds at neither. The patriarch has an affair and a bastard child the wife doesn’t know about, the jealous son is gay, the daughter has a boyfriend daddy doesn’t approve of, everybody jockeys for power… blah blah blah… It’s “Dynasty” with pretensions of Criterion Collection. Does it have nice production values? Well, yeah, for 4 million bucks an episode, it better. The dialogue in the pilot was all stilted, overwritten nonsense, the cast don’t gel, and it’s not hard to see why it’s a Nielsen disaster. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been made in the first place.
