Hollywood Reporter predictions: Reaper done, Privileged has a shot, Dollhouse 50-50…and Chuck

Posted on 20 April 2009 by Robert Seidman

I think this article from THR must define bubble show as a show where no decision has been announced yet.  The have Without a Trace and Cold Case at 50-50, with one likely to survive.  Eleventh Hour is considered in more grave danger.  Dollhouse is 50-50 in their bubble show guide.

Chuck?  Slightly worse chance than Medium according to the story.

But most surprising to me was this:

Over at the CW, “Reaper” is gone, while the prospects for “Privileged” have improved, and the show is now considered for a possible midseason order.

If Privileged is ressurected, I predict that will completely change the tenor of Renew or Cancel posts for next year.  I kind of hope that it happens so I can do the historical montage (set to “The Way We Were”)  of all the ways Bill came up with saying you’ll never see a new Privileged again, ever.

  1. djm says:

reaper gone but privileged is yellow?
hmm somebody at CW must really like that show…
3 chuck-related articles today.. thats gotta be some kinda record

  2. Anonymous says:

I honestly think sometimes these predictions are just pulled out of the writer’s butt just so they can fill up space….Privileged is 99% not coming back most likely

  3. Patrick Murphy says:

Yeah, this article really doesn’t pull from much more info than the one in the San Francisco Chronicle does. Although I would agree that Medium’s chances are a little better than average, but that’s because there’s more flexibility with where that show can go in the schedule. Delaying Chuck for any length of time never helps it. I hope the article is right about Better off Ted being renewed, but I can see where people might burn out on that show quickly. It’s not designed for a long run at this point. Then again, neither was The Office originally.

  4. mark wood says:

Actually out of the two shows, Reaper or Privileged its should be very clear what show would stay.

Reaper more total viewers (though not much more), but the 18-34 and 18-49 demos go to Privileged. Its also produced by one of the parent companies so any (yeah) off network moneys go to them. Not the case with Reaper.

  5. My guess both in the case of Nellie Andreeva’s article linked above, and the Goodman article last night, is that they are influenced, for good or for ill by talking to their contacts at the networks.

  6. Alex says:

I can see why The CW would want to bring Privileged back from a creative stand point at least – it meshes very well with the overall tone and feel they want for the network. However from a numbers point of view its hard to see how they justify bringing it back, unless they’re intending to throw it under the Idol bus next year in place of Reaper but that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

  7. j says:

I know this site is mostly for ratings, but I remember there was a post about how many shows’ pilots have been picked up for each network, and THR also has an article about which series are most likely to be picked up. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i9adb8751e5603b1d437a9c9dd3c2268e?imw=Y Here’s what seems, according to them, to be the best contenders, with the strongest on the first line for each net, and in parentheses their comments.

    ABC: Flash Forward (lock)
Happy Town, Eastwick, Inside the Box (hot)
FOX: Glee (already ordered), Human Target (shoo-in)
Maggie Hill (hot), Sons of Tucson/Cop House (front-runners)
    NBC: Trauma (strong + buzz), Parenthood (well-liked + start-studded)
Legally Mad, Lost & Found (serious contention); Community (hot)
    CBS: NCIS 2 (sure bet)
    Three Rivers (strong)
    CW: Melrose Place (go)
    Gossip Girl 2 (front-runner + happy)

  8. MELINA says:

    I hope Privileged is CANCELLED!

CW’S 6 new pilots seem more interesting than PRIVILEGED!!!

  9. Lisa says:

The predictions I’ve seen seem especially split about Eleventh Hour. A couple were very optimistic, a couple said it was pretty much dead, and the others were kind of in the middle. Personally, I enjoyed the show and would like to see it return. I don’t care about any of CBS’s other bubble shows. I think I watch only one of their dramas besides Eleventh Hour (The Mentalist, on occasion).

I wonder if something recent has happened to put Privileged in better standing. I don’t think it’s earned a renewal, based both on numbers and quality (the episodes were bland, inoffensive, and utterly forgettable, IMO).

  10. Josh Emerson says:

NBC has a couple pilots that sound pretty good…..which I am not at all happy about. This sucks. If Chuck isn’t brought back, the only one I might even bother watching is Community. I like Joel McHale a lot.

  11. dwalker says:

wooooow reaper gone and privledge to stay lmao this doesnt make any sense if they cancel reaper just fire dawn

  12. ReaperDMV says:

Although the Hollywood Reporter is saying Reaper is dead, early reports declared a premature death for the show last year too. There has been no official word from the CW yet, and they will never know you want the show to stay if you don’t tell them.

    All info here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/37449.html

  13. GEORGE 11 says:

wow!!!!!!!!great news!!!i hope privileged will come back!!!!

  14. Jon says:

Have they resolved the lack of a showrunner issue for Reaper yet? If not, that would probably give Priviledged the edge.

  15. dwalker says:

its just a prediction guys even tho it doesnt look good for reaper the cw is not bringing back is gone unless they bring it back against idol cause they wont sacrifice a new show but that wouldnt make sense theres no way privledge could do better in that slot then reaper

  16. Victor Brazil says:

Reaper is Gone? Oh My God… i can’t Believe…. This is only good show in that network.
    Reaper (18-49): 0.9/2
    Privileged: 0.7/2

  17. dwalker says:

no victor reaper is not gone its not official its just prediction but privledge is gone it did worse than reaper and it didnt ever have the 8 00 oclock slot so if they deside to bring one of those two back it would be reaper

  18. RJ says:

    “Reaper (18-49): 0.9/2
    Privileged: 0.7/2″

Privileged is probably skewing a lot more towards what the CW wants in the women 18-34 demo. 90210 (which airs after Reaper) has a 1.1 demo among 18-49 year olds, yet has over a 2.0 in the women 18-34 demo. Reaper has like a 0.8 in that same demo. Thats what sealed the fate of Reaper, sadly.

  19. Nick C says:

Hibberd has sources as good as mine, so it’s nice that someone from the media has finally said my 50/50 on DOLLHOUSE is accurate (in their mind).

I really think it will get renewed.

CHUCK and MEDIUM are both likely in my mind to come back, with MEDIUM being a midseason show to go on a night’s time slot where they just couldn’t find a fit.

  20. travis says:

I hope chuck comes back. Its the only network show i actually like to watch.Well the other predictions seem dead on.

  21. tivouser says:

I would so very excited to see “Privileged” renewed. I had given it up as dead – but this new article gives me a new glimmer of hope. Please CW – renew it!!!

  22. Lourdes says:

CBS will be a fool to cancel Eleventh Hour. With the ratings declining for several old shows including two CSIs, EH had a very good season 1 and it could do a lot better next season. It’s one of the few shows I watch besides Bones.
If not, I hope the show is picked up by other network because millions of fans will be watching it.
It’s not like CSI will be there forever. Think CBS!

  23. greg says:

As long as NBC keeps Chuck I will be happy.

  24. dwalker says:

woooooow people seem sure that reapers gone now but i dont get why they would even bring privledge back it had terrible ratings in the 9 oclock slot an its not going to do better than reaper against idol

  25. Tom says:

Would a Priveleged renewal be anything more than the CW realizing their repeat situation is out of control though?

  26. Bill Gorman says:

Tom, the repeat situation with the CW recently is primarily due to the fact that they started their season 3 weeks earlier than everybody else. Eventually that’s got to get made up sometime with extra repeats during the season.

  27. dwalker says:

i think cw is most to figure out why cancel reaper? and bring in a pointless spinoff like a melrose or lily hahahaha im sorry guys but cw wont after next year

  28. Dan says:

No no no, Privileged is definitely dead, as is probably Reaper. Dollhouse is not coming back, theres no 50-50. It has the same 50-50 chance as Canterbury’s Law and New Amsterdam did last year, which isn;t good. Eleventh Hour has a better chance than all the shows I just mentioned but its still not returning and I still believe Chuck is leaning toward a renewal. As for the Case/Trace duo I believe that Cold Case has more of a chance to survive however Without a Trace can and should still return.

  29. Dan says:

My thought on the Bubble Shows

    ABC
Likely Dead: Cupid, The Unusuals, In the Motherhood
Likely to Return: Castle, Surviving Suburbia, Better off Ted, Samantha Who

    CBS
Likely Dead: Worst Week, Gary Unmarried, Eleventh Hour, The Unit
Likely to Return: Cold Case, Without a Trace, Old Christine

    FOX
    Likely Dead: Terminator, Dollhouse
Likely to Return: Fifth Grader, Don’t Forget the Lyrics

    CW
Likely Dead: Reaper, Privileged, Everybody Hates Chris
    Likely to Return: The Game

    NBC
Likely Dead: Life, Knight Rider, Kath & Kim, Kings
Likely to Return: Parks & Recreation, Southland, Law & Order, Medium, Chuck, Earl

  30. Nick C says:

Dan, I don’t think Pete wants FOX Fridays to be game shows. I’m rather certain of it. So it’s more likely if DOLLHOUSE is canceled that it will be 2 new shows. I find that hard to believe though, so I think DOLLHOUSE may live on just because they don’t want two new shows there. You also forget the FIREFLY mistake. Whedon may get a second chance because FOX would look insanely stupid if they canceled another one of his shows and it ends up becoming a DVD sensation like FIREFLY was (and still is).

  31. Perhaps like the DVD sensation that was Firefly, it will spawn some sort of direct-to-DVD movie. It won’t be enough of a sensation to come back unless 50% of the 18-49s watching buy the DVD. Seems unlikely. Pete is better off going game show and House or (and he could alternate them) Lie to Me reruns.

  32. Nick C says:

Robert, not if FOX wants to build a Friday Night like CBS has.

Your points are valid, but I’m just stating where FOX is coming from, and it’s not my fault they’re leaning towards renewal right now (so it’s 51/49). Don’t shoot the messenger.

  33. FOX can’t build a Friday night like CBS has with Dollhouse. FOX knows that…. You will be 49/51 the other way come Friday Saturday ;-)

  34. Josh says:

Im hoping its 51/49 =) Jeez, im such a shameless whedonite.

  35. Josh says:

I dont think FOX can build as strong a night with original shows, the younger audience FOX gets simply isnt home on fridays unlike CBS.

  36. Josh, 18-49 is 18-49, and there are plenty at home. But they are watching Wife Swap, Supernanny, Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs (and cable!). If FOX really wants to compete on Friday with CBS, it will have to stick shows like Lie to Me and Fringe on Fridays. I don’t see any chance of that happening, though I’d love to see it and have them figure out other shows for the middle of the week.

  37. Josh says:

It would be interesting to see FOX seriously compete with established shows like that, I thought the TSCC&Dollhouse combo would have been stronger but neither show has had any favors from friday.

  38. dwalker says:

so i heard that privledged is gettin a possible midseason renewal so is it that true

  39. dwalker, I have no idea, but oh, how I hope it is true. :-D

  40. Greg Hanson says:

I will not watch NBC if Chuck is canceled. It’s the only t.v show where my whole family can watch. It includes a teenager, preteen( me), and both of my parents. Keep Chuck and I’ll make sure the ratings go up. And it’s the only show that I can talk to my friends about.

  41. clutz says:

The one problem with the “Firefly mistake” theory, at this point, is that Dollhouse is nowhere near as *good* in the (outside the industry and outside Whedonland) buzz. As an average 18-49 demo viewer, I heard *buzz* of Firefly, amongst friends, coworkers, yadda yadda yadda. So I checked it out a couple times. I’m still in that demographic, and I’m really only hearing Dollhouse *buzz* from Dushku, Whedon, and Nick C ;) . If FOX wants to build a scripted Friday night, sci-fi or otherwise, they had better find a more solid foundation, IMHO.

  42. HeroesforGhosts says:

I don’t really think you can compare Dollhouse to Firefly. Having seen both, Firefly is much, MUCH better. Even being “critically acclaimed” couldn’t save Firefly. The critics don’t like Dollhouse nearly as much. Good news that Castle might not be dead yet though.

  43. Michael says:

Do we know if the information about asking Shawn Ryan for 5th season ideas for The Unit is reliable? And if so, does that really mean anything or is it just getting my hopes up for nothing?

  44. I think I agree that Firefly was better than Dollhouse in execution. I think Dollhouse has a more imaginative concept, but that’s debatable, too.

Robert said: “Perhaps like the DVD sensation that was Firefly, it will spawn some sort of direct-to-DVD movie”. I don’t know if he means Serenity was direct-to-DVD, it wasn’t – it was in theaters.

I doubt Dollhouse will produce a movie.

Really, the cast on Firefly were like family and the fans were insane. I don’t get that same buzz from Dollhouse.

  45. ABCFanaticApril2009 says:

I think Privileged and Dollhouse should be gone.

  46. ron says:

i hope chuck comes back its the best spy show on network television and can go in many different directions as long as they keep the cast as is with a few trims.

  47. For a rundown on all the probabilities for the Bubble Shows, check out Media Predict.

We’re a stock market game where people make investments based on what they think will happen — and we’re usually right.

We do have “Chuck” coming back next year… as well as Scrubs.

Casualties include Better off Ted, Terminator, and Harper’s Island. Still, we think “Dollhouse” might squeak through.

  48. CIndy says:

I agree with the other Chuck fans that posted. It is one of the best on TV. Chuck is my favorite NBC show. Come on, NBC, please renew Chuck!

  49. THe Morgan says:

omg i will CRY if Chuck doesnt comeback for a third season… seriously dude

  50. miranda says:

I wouldn’t put Eleventh hour in danger just yet. It’s “drop” to below 11 million viewers (how many other shows does CBS have pulling those kinds of numbers?) happened on the ER finale night. so i think it did damned well to pull a 2.8 that night considering it’s likely to have a lot of cross over. I’ll be keen to see how it does without ER and all it’s special guests as competition. Looks to me like it’s a pretty solid show, pulling 2.7-3’s. 11 million viewers and 2.7’s is nothing to sniff at, not at all. CBS would be stupid to cancel it based on it’s numbers so far. If it drops without ER’s competition… well then maybe.

  51. Christine says:

IMO, Eleventh Hour has finally started gaining momentum. The Season Finale was fabulous!
Rufus Sewell is perfectly cast in the role of Jacob Hood, and the chemistry between the Hood/Rachel team is wonderful…
It’s my favorite CBS show and I can’t see CBS cancelling it without giving it a chance to strut it’s stuff now that ER is over.

  52. Kellie says:

Eleventh Hour fans: Go tell CBS that you want it back. As Christine said, the finale WAS fabulous and its chances to pull in the viewers come this Fall is high.
