Harper’s Island: One and Done

Posted on 21 April 2009 by Bill Gorman

After being gone last week, there’s a lot to catch up on, and a change in the numbers in the tables. Instead of using the 18-49 viewership for the calculations, I’m going to instead use the 18-49 rating, which simply is the percentage of the US 18-49 TV adults population. (There are an estimated 132 million US adults 18-49 in TV households, so a 1.0 rating is equal to 1.32 million adults 18-49). Since we only get 18-49 demo ratings for each show on an overnight basis, that makes the values in the Renew/Cancel Index easier to compare with the overnight demo ratings results.

Newcomer Harper’s Island was advertised as a 13 episode limited run series that could return in another incarnation if the results were good. They aren’t. It’s going to be canceled. After its 13 episode run, it’s done.

CBS has few shows doing terribly. Still, they will cancel some shows just to give themselves fresh spots in the schedule next season. That  leaves a big basket of shows in danger  (The New Adventures of Old Christine, Gary Unmarried, The Unit, Cold Case, Without A Trace, Worst Week).

The Friday shows (Flashpoint, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs)  all have low Indexes, but lower expectations (or costs) as well, they look safe.

Here’s some past quotes to think about; CBS Chief Les Moonves says “CBS Only Has Room For 3 or 4 New Shows Next Season”, and Entertainment President Nina Tassler says about the Wednesday comedy block “We’ve improved the time period, so it’s something we’d like to stick with.” as well as CBS doing a bit of public negotiating to knock down the prices on Cold Case and Without A Trace.

This is a breakdown of CBS scripted shows and their renewal and cancelation prospects.  Here are the others:

Our Renew / Cancel index predicts potential renewal for *next* season: Canceled/Not Returning, In Danger, or Renewal Likely for 2009-10, Renewal Announced.

Notes:

Friday night – Friday is quickly becoming an 18-49 wasteland, so these shows may be allowed a lower threshold for success than shows on other nights.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: CBS has tried to create a second “comedy block” this season on Wednesday by moving Christine from Monday and slotting freshman Gary Unmarried. Both have been among CBS’s worst scripted performers, but will Christine be given the benefit of the doubt?

Worst Week got the best slot in CBS’s lineup for a new comedy, but has performed just below average for the net. Reports are that CBS expected much more in that prime timeslot and that Worst Week will not be coming back next season.

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 viewership divided by its networks Season to Date average 18-49 viewership.

How did we come up with our Index? We found that last season, the future of a show was nearly directly related to its adults 18-49 average viewers divided by its networks 18-49 average viewers. Many other factors may matter, but they all seemed to boil down to that one number. Because American Idol so skewed Fox’s 18-49 average, and would make nearly all Fox shows fall into the “cancel” range, for Fox, I used the last STD 18-49 average *before* Idol. Last season, if a show had better than 92% of its network’s average 18-49 viewership (0.92 in our index) it was pretty safe, below that level it was in danger.

Remember that plenty can change before the end of the season, particularly for the shows with indexes between 0.80 and last season’s renewal line of 0.92. The list is presented in a (and has to be, since I cannot predict future ratings) “what would happen if the season ended today” mode. Could the renewal line be 0.86 this season? Possibly. It might also be 0.95. Might it be 0.70? No chance.

  1. Jared says:

Harper’s Island still is going to have all episodes show though, right?

  2. Heradite says:

At least Harper’s Island fans will get all over their questions answered by the finale!

  3. Chris says:

i dont know why everything is doing so bad this season

  4. WhatWhat says:

God only knows what’s going on in that hag Nina Tassler’s head.

I’m sure she has some crap program all ready for Cold Case’s timeslot, while she worships Les Moonves, hoping her beloved Without a Trace lasts another season.

I’m so sick of her bull and her constant hate for Cold Case, and it sucks she gets her devilish ways again, after her plot to kill Moonlight worked, but her beloved Ex-List crashed and burned.

She needs to DIAF because it’s her fault Cold Case is dying.

  5. Holly says:

    Ummm…OK then…

  6. Lourdes says:

I see CSI NY dropping some numbers. Careful with the CSIs, they won’t last forever.

  7. Holly says:

Could it drop enough for cancellation next year? Maybe (though without Leno instead of L&O as competition, it could actually do a bit better). Does that matter at all for this year? No. CSI: NY is not going to drop enough in the next several episodes to put it in any danger of not coming back next year.

  8. Kellie says:

No. It will take CBS another year to figure out that their CSI’s are not going to be what they used to be.

  9. cool says:

not next year, this year CSI has dropped like a rock, CSI:Miami is not the same and CSI:NY cannot crack the 3.0 in the demo.

  10. Holly says:

What show is what it used to be? CSI has been on top for 8 years, which is longer than any hour-long scripted show on ABC or FOX. While I’m sure CBS is very aware of the falling ratings, all 3 CSIs are still consistently in the top 25 shows in both viewers and the demo. CBS definitely has bigger problems than those three shows.

  11. DenverDean says:

Is it my imagination or did I read somewhere that TU producers were asked to outline a fifth season. CBS might be smart to order 16 epi of WAT, CC and The Unit. (I still hope that NBC drops Medium, which CBS/Paramount produce and CBS picks it up for Friday after GW.) The only reason I can TM moving to Thursday 10/9 after CSI is that they are prepping it to take over the slot in a couple of years — though I think original CSI still has life to it. Demo loss is a concern over last few epis. They need some young, hip criminalists to overcome loss of JF and GD.

  12. Holly says:

DenverDean, I read that too…(perhaps from Mitovich at TVGuide? I can’t remember). I’m not sure that will mean much though.

  13. Lourdes says:

    To Kellie:
I agree, I only hope they don’t regret losing viewers ;)

  14. cool says:

what CSI needs is another storyline like the miniature killer that keeps draggin all season.. great episodes.

  15. Nick C says:

FLASHPOINT btw isn’t coming back (at least not right away). The .66 is too low even for a cheap show.

  16. Chmarin says:

DenverDean, I think CBS might be moving The Mentalist to Thursday nights is because of the NCIS spinoff… Maybe they’ll want it after the original show on Tuesday night this fall? Plus, CBS needs a stable Thursday lineup (Eleventh hour, Harper’s Island aren’t doing that well)…

Also, ABC is apparently still interested in Old Christine:
    http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/04/exclusive-abc-h.html

  17. Lourdes says:

Chmarin, EH not doing that well? I don’t think so.

  18. Kellie says:

Eleventh Hour did well enough….just not ‘18 million viewers an ep CBS good enough’.

    And Lourdes….exactly.

  19. Holly says:

DenverDean, The comment about The Unit being asked for 5th season ideas was from the Hollywood Reporter article on bubble shows.

Lourdes and Kellie, You’re bagging on the CSI shows, yet think 11th Hour was doing well?

  20. Kellie says:

We are not ‘bagging’ on anything. I watch CSI. But it is not the same and CBS might not want to continue counting on it as ‘the end all and be all’. Some fans wouldn’t mind a show not prefaced with “CSI”.

And, yes, I do think that EH did well. And it has a fan base to prove it.

  21. Nikki says:

CSIs are declining. EH is not (since, uh, you really can’t decline with only one season). The point is, most of CBSs crime procedurals are getting old. There’s only so many years a show’ll go for after all.

  22. Lourdes says:

My point Holly is that it looks like CBS expects too much from the CSI franchise, which is fine, because it’s done very well so far. However, that won’t last forever and I think CBS should think about it and realize that new shows like TM and EH are probably good enough to keep them for another year in case the ratings drop for the CSIs, like they have been dropping.
And yes I think EH was doing well for a first season. I mean, you have Harper’s Island, compare the ratings.

  23. cool says:

The Mentalist skews way too old for Thursdays, yes CSI is down but CSI has better demos.

  24. Holly says:

What makes you think that CBS doesn’t know that the ratings for the CSIs are down? They definitely realize that they have a lot of potential with The Mentalist, which is why they have all the promotion and extra showings. It’s a shoe-in for renewal next season, and if rumors are correct, the PTB consider it as a real contender to take over for CSI.

  25. Rose says:

I thought they were airing all 13 episodes no matter what the ratings?

  26. Holly says:

Rose, This post isn’t saying that HI will be pulled right now, but that there will not be a second “season” (which would have been a new mystery, not a continuation of this one).

  27. Lourdes says:

Holly, I’m not saying CBS doesn’t know about it. However, the publicity for both shows has been quite different from the beginning, even before CBS saw the potential of TM or any other new show. If CBS gave EH more publicity, maybe the ratings will be different.
So you have a 12 million viewers show with less publicity and ends before other shows? Sorry, but it’s doing well.

  28. Nikki says:

I don’t think they don’t know. In fact, I do think that they know which is why EH and TM exist. They need to start lining up shows to replace the slew of crime procedurals that are nearing their end. And so they are. And if it was just a competition between EH and TM… well, one show isn’t going to be able to replace all of their aging procedurals. Better hope they come up with some good shows in the next few years!

  29. Jesse says:

The good people that created Harper’s have to be kicking themselves for the scope of the show. 25 people, 13 weeks. 12 in 13 would’ve been more feasible, and would’ve allowed them to create a pilot that didn’t suck and would’ve kept people interested. I’m in for the long run, out of morbid curiousity about who the killer is, but that pilot was admittedly very weak. And last week’s ep was just a little better.

  30. chris says:

    so, this really bothers me

numbers, ghost whisperer, and flashpoint are all safe according to you because they are on friday night and the expectations are less..

but without a trace and cold case pull in like 3-5 million more viewers..

i think one of those will be back in a normal timeslot..but for the other, why cant they move it to friday night, cut the costs, and cancel something else..they seem to have devoted fan bases..they’d probably bring in more viewers than flashpoint or numbers..i like numbers, so i hate talking about cancellation with it..but that show doesn’t look cheap to produce..replace it with cold case, which is surely much cheaper..

i just dont understand why those shows get this free pass when shows that are in danger could perform just as well, if not better, on friday night..

  31. Mumbo says:

They pretty much guaranteed to show all 13 episodes of Harper’s Island, though right? They had already announced the July 2 end date before the show even premiered.

I mean it’s fairly obvious it won’t get a second season, but I never expected it to in the first place, so.

  32. Evil says:

Is it just me or does Harper’s Island just seem like it doesn’t fit the rest of the shows? I bet if it was on ABC or even NBC, it would be a better fit since those two networks got plenty of shows that deal to some extent with mystery etc.

  33. StiffUpperLip says:

Yeah the title is (intentionally) misleading since it should rather read that there won’t be a spinoff, which is not the same as cancellation given that this was a miniseries. But I guess tvbythenumbers need the traffic, I can’t blame them these are hard times. Like with chuck/tscc/dollhouse anything that triggers fan drama and lures in those who have nothing better to do but draw bad blood with those said fans (and these people make the fans look good) means more traffic. Regarding Harper’s Island, I watched 20 minutes or so of the first episode and it made me think of the bold & the beautiful when I was expecting something like a teen slasher.

  34. s says:

Harper’s Island suffers from too many characters i mean after 5 deaths we still have all these kickin for screentime

    Trish “The Bride”
    Mrs. Wellington “the Stepmother”
    Shea “the Maid of Honor”
    Madison “the Flower Girl”
    Beth “the Single Girl”
    Chloe “the Flirt”
    Abby “the Good Girl”
    Maggie “the Wedding Planner”
    Nikki “the Biker Chick”

    J.D. “the Black Sheep”
    Sully “the Best Man”
    Jimmy “the Old Flame”
    Henry “the Groom”
    Danny “the College Buddy”
    Booth “the Nerd”
    Malcolm “the Hustler”
    Richard “the Brother-In-Law”
Mr. Wellington “the Father of the Bride”
    Hunter “the Other Man”
    Shane “the Townie”
    Cal “the Outsider”
    Sheriff “the Sheriff”

  35. clutz says:

Are repeats factoring into the Friday drops a bit? I’m fairly certain the past couple of weeks have had Flashpoint repeats. Could be wrong though.

  36. Tony says:

I thought last weeks CSI’s {Vegas} was one of the worst ever. Never really got in NY at all and Miami is more of a daytime soap storyline every year.

  37. JGnycChop says:

Is it just me or would it have made better sense to maybe launch Harper’s island later in may once audience return and are more focused and perhaps launched it afte csi but paired it regularly with ghost whisperer that wouldve been a fun one-two spooky comdo

  38. Jaye says:

that wouldve be a good idea, jgnycChop, but if HI did well, they wanted the option for a second season

but srsly, networks need to realize that if they put a good summer series on, it would do so well…. thats how American Idol and The O.C. got their starts…

  39. lisaw says:

I’ve heard it mentioned a few times that The Mentalist might be put into a 10.00p.m. slot even on a Tuesday. I’ve no great in depth knowledge of the logistics and obviously some well performing shows get that slot but would it not be strange for CBS to put one of their current top performing shows there?

While they could cancel both if it is a case of one or the other then I am optimistic about Without A Trace getting another Season (although it will be the last) for going by both the numbers and the direction of the plot I an convinced Cold Case is a goner.

One thing which perhaps not enough prominence is being given to is what effect Jay Leno might have next year? If CBS factor this heavily into their calcualtions then we could yet be in for some surprises. There could be wild fluctuations depending on what new story may have broken on any particular day.

Just for anyone who is interested. I can’t understand why The Mentalist has been such a hit in the US. It’s okay to pass an hour but it’s certainly not a must see. It’s dropping like a stone in the UK. After a great start on our “fifth” channel at 3.6m it has gone, 3.2m, 2.9m and down to 2.3m last week putting CSI back as Five’s #1 show – even post-Grissom.

  40. Bryn says:

How is it cancellation if it was advertised as a limited 13-episode series?

  41. Paul PT says:

In my opinion 25-54 should be the age reference and not 18-49!

in australia the reference was 16-39, and now is 18-49…

i think that people between 25-54 have more Purchase power, because viewers between 18-24 are not independent, don’t work, and so on.

  42. ABCFanaticROCKS! says:

OLD CHRISTINE- It’s Gone I think or a new timeslot
    GARY UNMARRIED- Gone
    UNIT, THE – Gone
    HARPER’S ISLAND – Gone if doesn’t pull a 2.8 in the future
COLD CASE – Maybe will be back for one more season
WITHOUT A TRACE – Maybe will be back for one more season
ELEVENTH HOUR – Maybe a new timeslot next season, Gone if CBS has a lot of new shows they want to premiere
    WORST WEEK – Gone

I’m suprised that CBS can’t find a show in Thursday 10PM that has enough demos numbers especially with the CSI lead-in.

  43. Connie Cuomo says:

I have to say that we can knock ourselves silly but in the end it is up to CBS. I am not sure who is driving there but Harper’s Island is poorly done period (Agatha Christie gone nuts), Flashpoint is no great shakes either and therefore if CBS continues with the type of inane violence they will fail.

I happen to watch both the Mentalist and Eleventh Hour. Both shows are equal period. Please spare me all comparisons. But I believe that EH suffers from headless plot syndrome. There is no superior officer and I do not why they have decided to choke the life out of a actor like Rufus Sewell. In that respect, the producers of TM were smarter, they provided Simon Blake with a quirky character and a good ensemble specifically the gentleman who plays the boss.

CBS should fine tune both shows and publicize them to the hilt. They represent a refreshing change from all the shows around them and deserve renewsls. Rufus Sewell is a joy and much better actor than this show portrays.

  44. Tommy says:

I read somewhere that Old Christine may move to ABC if CBS decides to cancel it. The same thing happened last year and CBS decided to keep it. I don’t know if they will have the same love for the show this year considering how poorly it is performing, but CBS did say that they wanted to stick with the Wednesday Comedy block so I think it has a better chance than I give it credit. Here’s a link to what I read:http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/04/exclusive-abc-h.html

  45. Bad Robot ! says:

Harpers IZLAND will likely go the way of SWINGTOWN. Both shows have former JERICHO producers on the production team. They dont have a real good history of late.

CBS does have 12 of the top 20 shows, so they are doing pretty well; despite what MOONLIGHT and JERICHO fans think.

NBC – now thats a network in real trouble – no shows in the top 20. Keeping dead weight like Friday Night Lights around and turning 1/3 of primetime over to Leno wont help matters.

  46. Lisa says:

If Harper’s Island had succeeded, apparently another, similar 13-episode series set in a different location, with a different cast, would have followed. So yeah, it was billed as limited run/13 episodes but CBS had to be hoping for more down the line.

Just because of the fact that I hate the thought of such short “seasons” (unless they ran two a year, for a total of 26 episodes), I’m glad it’s failing. I can’t stand how British shows have such short runs. Hustle is like a puny 6 episodes a year, and Torchwood’s first two seasons were just 13 each, I believe. Not nearly enough!

Don’t advertisers like to hook them when they’re young? Isn’t that one big reason why they aim at age 18+ rather than a higher age level?

  47. Jon says:

Lisa, British shows usually only have 6-13 episodes due to 1. money 2. Only one or two writers writing a series. Doctor Who, Robin Hood, Merlin, Torchwood, Shameless and Law & Order: UK are the exception with 13-14 episodes.

The Mentalist does seem to groomed to the successor for CSI when it eventually ends, it’s doing well in the UK although the high ratings it achieved for the first episode was against very weak competition and it has been up against football and Easter Holidays which may explain the drop. I expect it will remain between 2.5-3m from on but Five will definetly keep it as they’ve dropped House which is going to Sky1.

I think Cold Case and Without a Trace will be back for one more season but I think CBS should look for their replacements next week. I think Washington Field and Miami Trauma look like strong contenders for pickup and the NCIS spin-off is a lock on for a fall slot.

  48. Tony says:

I think HI will finish out it’s run. I’m sure CBS isn’t expecting blockbuster ratings after CSI orignal episodes are done in May. HI will still have like 6 episodes to air into July.

I think the 13 episode short run series is a great idea and should continue but perhaps with a better story? I don’t think the networks should give up on the idea just because Harpers Island hasn’t been a slam dunk winner.

  49. Bill Gorman says:

Tommy, that Ausiello post seems like public negotiating by the producers of Christine. Not that I blame them. Ausiello laps that stuff up, and it couldn’t hurt.

  50. Lourdes says:

    To Connie:

You don’t want to make comparisons and yet you’re comparing ;)
However I don’t think EH needs it, since the plot is different from TM. Or maybe have it next season.
But I agree with you, they’re a refreshing change and the publicity should be intense.
    And Rufus, he’s awesome!

  51. Evil says:

Actually I like the idea of a 13 episode seasons. Cable does it all the time and if the stories told are good — why not? Makes room for more shows! Unfortunately I have to say that Harper’s Island isn’t really well done. After watching two episodes I know less than five names and there seem to be a gazillion characters which are mostly unimportant cause they will be eventually killed. They should’ve focussed on less characters, I think.

  52. Lisa says:

Jon–I already knew why most British shows have such short seasons. I was saying that I hope that style never becomes widely accepted among broadcast networks in the U.S., because I don’t like it. Hustle’s a good show, but I’d far rather have my 22 episodes of Desperate Housewives a season than the 6 or so that Hustle manages.

As for cancellations, Eleventh Hour might really be helped by the fact that it must be relatively cheap to produce (I think). I wonder how much cheaper than Without a Trace, which has a much larger regular cast? I’m finding it tough to justify CBS keeping Cold Case and Trace both for next season. How likely is it that they’d cancel the two instead of just one, I wonder.

  53. Carmen says:

I suspect Cold Case would do better if they would ever stop their tendency to preach to all of us about the injustices of social conditions from the past. They just can’t seem to lay off the (attempted) moral lessons.
Yes, history is filled with injustices and intolerances, but we don’t tune in to hear about it time after time. Hey, we can go back to some point in any century and apply modern slants or revisionism to it. Point is, there are excellent documentaries and stations (e.g. History, Discovery that can be viewed on those subject.

  54. Jon says:

Lisa, I’m a fan of Hustle too and I think it should have a slightly longer run of 8-10 episodes. The US Networks are unlikely to change the 22-24 episodes for procedurals shows as they do very well in syndication but for serialised shows, I think 13-20 episodes could become the norm.

  55. Alex says:

Interestingly enough there’s been some talk of producing longer seasons in the UK but it would come with a trade-off of producing fewer shows. The idea that’s gained the most traction is to split seasons into two halves and air them in two separate quarters of the year. So for example you’d get 8 episodes of Hustle at the start of the year and then another eight over the summer whilst something like Mistresses would air eight episode blocks in the space between.

There would likely be exceptions to that with the Saturday night ‘Doctor Who slot’ still revolving between dramas at the moment Who, Robin Hood and Merlin but I’m fairly sure that Robin Hood won’t be back next year and a new show will be cycled into that – there’s a pirate show treatment floating around the BBC that seems to be quite well regarded but God knows how they’d ever manage to shoot that.

I’m way off topic now though.

  56. Rose says:

LOL well Holly I expected the show to tank, and even its first week ratings didn’t really justify a second season, so no surprise to me. Just the way it was phrased before confused me, I thought people were saying CBS would not air all 13 episodes.

  57. Jon says:

Alex, The Scrimshaw Pirates from Kudos sounds like a good idea although I imagine it would have to be a co-production as the costs would be very expensive. I wish they would do a family drama that isn’t set in the past or based on a legend.

Back to CBS, Is The Bridge scheduled for this summer, it will be interesting whether it can achieve similar success to Flashpoint.

  58. clutz says:

@Bad Robot, how many of the top 20 shows in the 18-49 demographic does CBS have? When you compare the total viewer top 20 to the 18-49 top 20, there’s some pretty clear evidence that CBS, while sitting pretty in total viewers, has some real work to do to catch the coveted demo ratings. The Wednesday comedy block might be a safe route to pursue – the CBS Monday night does very well in the demo. I have no doubt that demo success is a big reason NCIS is getting a spinoff, too. If it works, copy it! Alternately, they could try to sell advertisers on the idea that demographics aren’t such a big deal, it’s the totals that count. ;)

It seems to me that any time CBS tries somehting “edgy” or “different,” they just can’t seem to pull it off. Here’s hoping BACK makes the grade – Ulrich/McGinley/Stringfeld is a fine triangle of actors.

  59. Holly says:

clutz, They managed 7 shows in the top 20 in the demo last week, which considering that three of their shows that often make it were in repeats, isn’t too bad.

  60. marty118 says:

    PaulPT,
The key demos aren’t based on who has the most money to spend. They’re based on whose purchasing decisions are most likely to be influenced by 30 second television spots, a very different question.

Most people 50 and up don’t have their brand decisions changed based on television spots. There are other ways to reach them, and advertisers spend money on those, also. But the broadcast television model is based on selling advertisers 30 or 60 second spots for hundreds of thousands of dollars. That only makes financial sense for certain kinds of products for certain age groups.

  61. Dan says:

Mondays could look like this with the only change being 9:30 since everything else is doing well.

    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 How I Met Your Mother
9:00 Two and a Half Men
    9:30 NEW SERIES
    10:00 CSI: Miami

The Mentalist could be moved to Tuesdays at 10 so the NCIS spinoff can air at 9 like so. Without a Trace would likely be axed then.

    8:00 NCIS
    9:00 NCIS Spinoff
    10:00 The Mentalist

Wednesdays could look like this if CBS sticks with the comedy block, which I think they should. I believe CBS should not try out new comedies at 8:30 and stick with established ones.

    8:00 Old Christine
    8:30 Rules of Engagement
    9:00 Criminal Minds
    10:00 CSI: NY

Thursdays would have a change at 10 with everything else the same.

    8:00 Survivor
    9:00 CSI
    10:00 NEW SERIES

Please comment on my projected schedule Mon-Thurs

  62. Lourdes says:

To Dan, what would be your Sunday schedule?

  63. marty118 says:

    Dan,
They may launch the new NCIS spinoff in the 9 pm Tuesday spot, but leaving it there permanently would seem like too much of the same thing, I’d think. There’s a reason all the Law & Orders and CSIs air on different nights, rather than altogether in a block.

Thursdays are a big revenue night for networks, even at 10. I’d guess they’d at least try The Mentalist there before slotting in an altogether new show. The exception might be the NCIS spin-off, but only if it skews younger than the original.

  64. R.G. says:

Great concept of a show: “HARPERS ISLAND” – but this show was stupid -

  65. R.G. says:

…actually CBS should call ALL their shows CSI or NCIS

“OLD” CSI: “CHRISTINE” – Christine re-VISITS old episodes of some of their serial killer shows of CSI)

    “SURVIVING” NCIS

    “CRIMINAL MINDS” OF THE CSI

“2 MEN” FROM CSI & “HALF” FROM NCIS

    “RULES OF NCIS ENGAGEMENTS”

and then maybe a combo CSI: NCIS (CSI guys in the NCIS)

  66. Visan says:

Hopefully Harper’s Island will have all 13 episodes shown…. It’s a pretty good show, despite the homogenous (sp?) cast…..

  67. John says:

Harper’s Island was a real letdown. We watched the first episode, decided that the Groom is the killer, and tuned out. I say KEEP “THE UNIT” and dump COLD CASE, ELEVENTH HOUR, and 1 more year for WITHOUT A TRACE.

  68. kimmie says:

Can anyone tell me {for sure} it NCIS is going to be renewed for another season? I am fan of NCIS, it is my favorite show, I watch it all the time- new episodes as well as the reruns. I really hope that they renew NCIS for a 7th season, and they should because it has been doing really well. Anyways, I really hope they renew NCIS, please someone tell me if they are going to renew it. Thanks.

  69. Bill Gorman says:

Kimmie, it’s a lock to return.

  70. Dan says:

Lourdes– Sunday would be hard to figure out. 7:00 and 8:00 would probably be the same (60 minutes and The Amazinf Race) however what 9 and 10 would be is harder to figure out. My best guess is if CBS keeps Cold Case for another year, which I think they should do if WAT is dropped, then the schedule could be like this….

    7:00 60 Minutes
    8:00 The Amazing Race
    9:00 Cold Case
    10:00 NEW SERIES

As you can see considering The Unit is going to be axed, if Cold Case is staying CBS would likely try something new to air after it. If CBS doesn;t want to keep Flashpoint on fridays, sundays at 10 could be a good place to put it.

    Fridays
For fridays it seems CBS would likely try something new in the 9:00 slot. Flashpoint has worked well, but it seems possible CBS may want to try something new and hold Flashpoint for midseason.

    8:00 Ghost Whisperer
    9:00 NEW SERIES
    10:00 Numb3rs

I believe that The Unit, Eleventh Hour, Harper’s Island, and Worst Week are not coming back and things aren’t looking good for Gary Unmarried and Without a Trace. I think CBS will give Cold Case another year and same eith Old Christine, and if CBS axes christine, ABC has announced they will pick it up, possibly pressuring CBS to keep it another year. I think CBS should keep Christine regardless in order to stick with their Wednesday night comedy block. Christine/Rules combo is the best for next year.

  71. Julia says:

I’m confused. Harper’s Island got between 8 million-10 million for its first two episodes so far. WHY would that merit a cancellation? It’s key demo ratings are like 2.7.

What kind of ratings does a show need to have on CBS in order to be a keeper?

  72. ljo says:

    @Julia

From the table above, HI’s season-to-date 18-49 rating is 2.4 whereas the network average season-to-date 18-49 rating is 2.9. So HI is mare than 17% below the network average for CBS.

  73. Holly says:

Julia #2, Generally speaking, shows on CBS need to maintain close to a 3.0 in the 18-49 demo to be safe. Of course, Friday shows are lower (keeping a 2.0 is good enough for Friday). Also, CBS really wants to build a second comedy block, so the Wednesday comedies are getting more leeway. Since you asked about total viewers, 10 million is not all that good for CBS, even the Friday shows maintain that. Most hour-longs get 12 million or higher.

  74. Carol says:

I love Eleventh Hour so I hope that it gets renewed. It’s a great show and way better than Fringe.

  75. Kellie says:

    Carol:

Come and help out us with the campaign, then. It is fun and very easy.

    See you there!

  76. antonia says:

Does anyone knows for sure if all the main actors of NCIS will be returning for the 7th season? Cause I heard something that either Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo or Ziva might not return, is that true or just a rumor? I wanna know, so somebody please tell me. I think that the main characters should stay on for the 7th season, together they make NCIS.

  77. JuliaG says:

Thanks for answering my question, guys!

I guess I’m not as used to the CBS guidelines! What CBS expects in its shows and such. I mostly watch FOX. So for FOX, Harper’s Island ratings would probably be good.

    Thanks!

  78. Julia says:

JuliaG, even on FOX last night’s results for Harper’s Island would not be very good. But it looks like CBS will air all of Harper’s so you can at least be glad that it’s a self contained season!

  79. Brian D says:

Flashpoint and The Ex List have similar demo numbers that’s interesting. Eleventh Hour is somewhat disappointing. It was doing so well and faded so fast.

  80. Shumbuck@hotmail.com says:

    Flashpoint is cheaper for them

  81. Kellie says:

    Brian:

Did you see the season finale of Eleventh Hour?

  82. Heradite says:

I think the Mentalist/NCIS pairing will still be here next season. It gives CBS a huge power rating 2-hour, and I think they will put the NCIS spin-off at 10, to have a Mentalist lead-in.

  83. Lourdes says:

Kelli, I don’t think Brian saw it :) And I can tell you right now which other shows have disappointed this season ;)

  84. weepuls_24 says:

The New Adventures of Old Christine has a chance to be renewed
WORST WEEK and GARY UNMARRIED are destined to get chopped out
COLD CASE has 50-70% chance to survive
WITHOUT A TRACE is in danger
ELEVENTH HOUR might be back next season or NOT..
“CBS FRIDAY LINE UP” are safe
THE UNIT is also in danger
