The return of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice helped ABC to a narrow win on a closely contested Thursday night. Newcomers Parks & Recreation, Southland and Harper’s Island were all down from last week.

The big shows got hammered last night. Grey’s AnatomySurvivor: Tocantins, and CSI  all had or matched their lowest original show 18-49 demo ratings, ever. And The Office had its lowest 18-49 demo rating this season for its regular timeslot.

My Name is Earl was 15% below its original show average this year. Parks and Recreation ratings continued to fall (3.0>2.5>2.3), as did Southland (3.2>3.0>2.5). Hell’s Kitchen was well below its season average 18-49 rating of 3.8. And Bones went very low, hitting just a 2.15 18-49 demo rating.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

277 Responses to “Thursday Ratings: ABC Wins; Southland, Parks & Rec, Harper’s Island All Slip”

  1. Nick C says:

Wow everything seemed to take a big hit. The CW had to have it’s worst Thursday in a long time for new episodes. Even THE OFFICE at 3.7 isn’t that hot.

  2. Mike says:

Oh my goodness, I’m surprised at how much Parks&Rec and Southland dropped! Is NBC forbidden from having a hit show? :(

When you see shows across the board losing their viewers like that (partially because of the nicer weather), it really makes you appreciate when a show is able to retain or marginally increase the number of viewers week-over-week. I’d point out which show I’m referencing but I’m sure 100 people will fill-in-the-blanks for me.

  3. Chris F says:

I thought Southland would hold up a little better than that.

  4. Sean G says:

wow, the office beat CSI in adults 18-49 and doubled the 18-34 rating with only half the viewers…again. Awesome.

  5. Anthony says:

WOW Southland dropped hard. Maybe NBC will consider renewing both it and Chuck since there’s only a .2 point difference. But that sure sucks for Southland if they can’t rebound from that.

  6. jay says:

What hits me in the eye first is that PP slipped in the half hour from 3.4 to 3.1 and Southland from whatever to whatever, .1 point. ( Grey’s gained from 4.6 to 5.1, so PP by the time the cows came home lost two whole points from the leadin.) The story is 18-49 viewers leaving the sinking network ship after ten. Obviously, PP and B and S will have inflated ratings against Leno both overall and in the demo, and ABC will be a solid … number three. One cheer and yay chief for that behemoth Disney.

  7. boomdizzle2 says:

Looks like reality shows are the only broadcast shows that pull the big numbers anymore. That’s unfortunate for the scripted

  8. Tony says:

As predicted, Southland dropped like a rock once it faced competition. Turns out this isn’t as big a hit that NBC was hoping for after all.

  9. Liban A says:

Grey’s was back, but its numbers arn’t that strong!

  10. AD says:

Bad day for southland and NBC in general is not a great idea to keep so many shows on bubble and for so long time people doesnt want to take the risk even with new shows

  11. mucittin says:

chuck is in the toughest time slot but it is better than parks and recreation

  12. David4 says:

Bones gained a million viewers at the 8:30 hour?

  13. Lourdes says:

It’s MUJERES Asesinas, with a J. Good show.
Well, Harper’s Island keeps sinking and CSI can’t get higher than 15 m.
Well, Bones got a million viewers more. That’s nice. It’s a great show.
Again CBS should have repeats of EH instead of HI.

  14. idizzle says:

Woah, what’s with Bones? Are people getting ed up with the overabundance of it or are they trying to make Lie to Me look a little better?

  15. Jack says:

Nice job predicting “Parks” and SOUTHLAND as safe new hits. I called this trend last week and this week and it will continue. CHUCK is also picked up for a third season. Ask Nick C how I know that if he even has any inside information.

  16. Agent Chuck says:

I tried to watch P&R again last night and it is just not funny. I did not laugh once. As for Southland it is comforting to know that Chuck and Southland are pulling the same Demos when Southland has much less competition to face than Chuck.

But wow Private Practice killed it.

  17. JR1234 says:

I knew once the shows came back from reruns Southland and P&R would slip. P&R is just not funny. Lets go Chuck! Go to Subway on Monday and watch Chuck.

  18. FrankJ says:

Anthony, actually the half hour numbers for Chuck may look better than Southland. Someone check my work, but I think Chuck rose from a 2.2 to a 2.5. Not sure about 18-34 demo though, but Chuck averaged 1.9.

  19. Diane says:

I’m not too surprised about P&R. A lot of people said they’d give it another episode or two and if the quality didn’t improve, they’d abandon ship. Apparently that is what is happening. Southland’s drop is definitely more surprising. The show’s tone is obviously much more gritty and serious than most of TV fare. Not sure if that is a detriment or not, but it could be.

  20. cool says:

    wow Everything is down.

  21. Dario says:

Oh no! Poor Southland :( F*** Private Practice…CSI was also low.
Why is ABC here two times???

  22. Anonymous says:

Damn, you guys make me GAG…this place is getting INFESTED with Chuckmania…why does EVERY show have to be compared to CHUCK all the time???

  23. Melissa R. says:

Wow, everything was down last night. Guess that what happens when Spring weather starts.

  24. Jack says:

Because we love CHUCK more than you hate us and we are going to fight for it to stay.

  25. cool says:

    Because Chuck is dead :)

  26. Dario says:

I forgot to say : My name is Earl is up!
BTW I think there is mistake in 8:30. P & R should be second.

  27. Agent Chuck says:

Chuck would rock on Thursday nights. What better way to start off your thursday than to watch Yvonne Strahotski.

I was really skeptical about all the love Southland was getting. It never had any competition. If it cannot survive on Thursday at 10, I doubt it can do better when it has to compete against Fox as well.

In the grand scheme of things Chuck is not doing so bad.

  28. al says:

Crazy Chuck fans. You give your show a bad name.

  29. Alex says:

I don’t think the Parks drop is note worthy at all primarily because it fits with the younger skewing NBC comedy line-up NBC is shooting for and it only dropped a tenth in the 18-34 this week, which is the demo NBC will be looking at for the Thursday comedies.

    The Southland drop is worrying.

But once again the story for Thursday isn’t the NBC line-up but how badly CSI did. It droppped from the second half hour of Survivor in both demos and CBS’ and pulled a 1.9 in the 18-34 in the first half hour and will average out at a 3.6 and 2.0 in the demos for the night.

  30. Dario says:

Jesus Christ! You are annoyining! FU** chuck!

  31. elle says:

The Southland cast is at the NBC Summer Press Day right now.

  32. Agent Chuck says:

When Chuck gets renewed we will go away, but until that time Chuck is going to get compared to every show out there. We are not the only ones pushing for the show, type in Chuck in Google News and you will see now time, NPR, TV Guide are all pushing for Chuck.

But Southland is not quite the hit everyone was expecting it to be.

  33. cool says:

So those are the real numbers for Southland :P

  34. Bill Gorman says:

    Mujeres typo fixed, thanks.

Jack, as for predicting Southland and Parks & Rec’s futures.
    1. I never used the word “hit”.
    2. I simply predicted renewal based on past numbers. I never presume to predict future numbers.

Those Bones half hour viewership numbers are correct.

  35. Alex says:

EDIT – CSI not CBS there… werid.

Also Chuck fans please go away. Southland is not linked to Chuck’s future and even if it was Southland still performed better than Chuck in the 18-49 anyway.

  36. Michael says:

This is going to be a problem for NBC. They’re announcing what shows are renewed on May 5th. That means they only have four episodes of P & R and Southland to judge from. What are they going to do if they renew P & R and Southland and the ratings drop dramatically in the last episodes? Can they avoid making a decision on P & R and Southland until after May 5th?

  37. Victor says:

Too bad for Southland. That was quite a drop. But if it gives Chuck a fighting chance I´m all for it.

  38. Agent Chuck says:

So Southland gets picked over Chuck. This cannot be a numbers game so what is it?

  39. Julia says:

I have it on good authority that Jericho is renewed for a third season, everyone! You must believe me because I said it on the internet!

  40. Chris F says:

The infestation may end in two weeks but crazy fans in general are half the fun of this site.

  41. Jack says:

I am looking forward to the anti-CHUCK spin. I cannot wait for next week.

  42. Justin says:

Brutal night for just about everyone involved. Hopefully things will rebound next week.

  43. Alex says:

Also Bones did badly last night.

  44. Tom says:

Those are some really interesting numbers at 10pm.

Harper’s didn’t drop that much (~2.0 average) vs. 2.2 from last week vs. a new PP. Just who is the audience here? People that never turn their dial from CBS, period?

Private Practice had about its normal Thursday non-repeat average. Clearly there is no massive influx of former-ER viewers to the show. Also means CBS can get decent numbers here next year and will schedule a big title accordingly.

Southland is down, vs. itself and the ER average vs. new PP episodes. What is going on here: a seasonal drop, or former ER viewers getting bored with the show? Either way, at Wells’ per-episode costs, NBC bringing this back would be an expensive gamble.

As far as 8pm goes, I wouldn’t mark it as anything other than seasonal drops. Interesting though that Earl is up – do they have some hidden internet community rooting for another season?

  45. rawfootage says:

I predicted Southland was going to dip below 3.0 this week going up against a new PP – but was not expecting it to dip that low. A crucial factor was probably the less-than-average lead-in.

Southland is pretty much canned – a 2.4 in the demo and that’s going up against no competition on CBS. Southland would probably be in the low 2.0s if CBS had a decent performing show at 10pm.

As for P&R, if it continue to struggle, NBC will most likely place it after The Office next season.

  46. cool says:

    LOL Julia.

  47. Ren says:

I’m not entirely worried for P&R, but I think it deserves a better chance than what its getting because everyone seems to be putting it down, when I couldn’t stop laughing last night. For those that watched, the brief scene with the raccoon had me in stitches!

But hopefully it will get better, and no I’ve never watched The Office which could explain why I like it and why I’m not 80% of those that think its a complete copy.

Never watched Chuck either but I’m rooting for it because I’ve never seen fans this dedicated since Veronica Mars :)

  48. Pad says:

And the straw clutching begins….. That is dissapointing for Southland though.

  49. Chief says:

Ouch for Southland. I agree with Bill though that it and P&R will both be back.

  50. Lourdes says:

    Thanks for changing MUJERES ;)

  51. Jon says:

Everything seemed down last night even with the return of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Harper’s Island isn’t coming back for another season and SouthLAnd took a hit as well. I think NBC will still pick both P&R and SL for another season.

  52. Chief says:

I have a general question: What will this site do during the summer when we’re in the land of repeats and reality shows?

  53. Dario says:

Bill, should P&R be second at 8:30? Cuidado con el Angel did better than Smallville at 8:00

  54. Kathy B. says:

What happened to the CW? I was sure the Jump the Shark episode of Supernatural would have held up as well as the previous episodes. I know I couldn’t wait to see if they could pull that off.

  55. Bill Gorman says:

Folks, I’m a bit too busy today to worry about sorting past the first column, sorry.

  56. Alex says:

Seriously no one else thinks the story of last night is that CSI did a 3.6 and 2.0 in the demo and dropped demo points out of the second half hour of Survivor?

  57. Pad says:

Chris said: I have a general question: What will this site do during the summer when we’re in the land of repeats and reality shows?

If 538.com can survive after its main focus is gone im sure this place will find things to write about as well.

  58. Bad Robot ! says:

The thing about Southland, the little Ive seen of it, one of the cops reminds me of the engineer guy on Star Trek Enterprise. Not a good thing.

  59. Diane says:

Southland has been promoted like crazy, too. I only watched a couple hours of NBC this week, but the Southland promos were so constant that my daughter and I commented about it. Is there such a thing as excessive promo backlash? Or are they so constant that nobody is paying attention any more?

  60. rawfootage says:

I can’t wait for the new NBC commercial claiming Southland as “The new hit show everybody is talking about.”

NBC would be nuts to pick up Southland. Best chance it has is a mid-season pickup but I see better options: L&O, Medium, and Chuck.

I wonder if the NBA playoffs had anything to do with last night’s overall sub-par performance. The Lakers vs. Jazz game was a thrilling nail-biter.

  61. TB says:

Southland – With a decent lead-in, no competition from Fox, weak competition from CBS, and a 2.45 demo? NBC = not happy.

  62. JT says:

Once again, ABC returns Grey’s after a long stretch of repeats, and once again a chunk of the audience has disappeared. By this time next season, Grey’s will be down to about 9.5 million viewers and a 4.2 in the demo (if they’re lucky). Will they ever learn??? It’s not just ABC that does this, but they do seem to be the worst offenders.

Back in the days when there were three channels to choose from, repeats could draw a sizeable audience, but in todays world where most households have 100+ channels to surf, they just don’t fly. I really think stretching 22-24 new episodes over a 36 week period is a terrible practice, and yet it’s been done for years.

The way I see it, there are two potential solutions: Produce at least 30 episodes per season or reduce the span for which the 22 episodes air.

I also think production costs of scripted programming could be cut significantly. I don’t understand how cable networks can produce quality dramas such as “Rescue Me” or “The Closer” or “Mad Men” for a fraction of the cost. Does anyone know why the productions costs of cable are so much lower than broadcast?

  63. Chief says:

I missed that Alex. Yes, I think one of the big stories from the TV season as a whole has to be the very surprising hard drop of CSI, especially post-Grissom.

  64. J. Norman says:

    According to Liban A:

Grey’s was back, but its numbers arn’t that strong!

Well, that’s subjective. As I hear over and over on this site, the only numbers that count are the 18-49 and especially the 18-34. The latter being where the people who can still be molded and manipulated more easily by the advertisers. If these 2 demos are the target, then Grey’s is doing OK.

I notice that on the overnights both the Office and 30 Rock punched out CSI pretty good in these coveted (by advertiser) demos. Therefore, by the reasoning of this site they are considered more successful that CSI despite the overall numbers. While fully understanding the logic of the advertising targets, I have to think that the extra 7 million or so viewers a show like CSI gets accross the board would easily offset the several several hundred thousand they lose to the 18-49 crowd or the 2.5 million they lose to the 18-34 walking $$ signs.
    But, maybe not.
It is clear that the NBC comedies appeal quite a bit to the younger viewers. The Office, 30 Rock, and even Parks and Recreation actually have better ratings in the 18-34 than they do in the 18-49. THis makes them “coveted” even if they do draw 7 million a night less.

  65. Tony says:

    See. Another Chuck gagfest.

Anybody else enjoy it with they got pwned by the TSCC fans the other day?

  66. Rhuw Morgan says:

While its not a great demo rating and dropped a lot from last week, Southland still did a better job of holding its audience over the full hour. PP & HI both lost over 1 million while Southland only lost 100,000 viewers. Obviously the viewers it does have are very loyal. I suppose it will all come down to whether it can rebound next week and whether NBC can make it workable in a 9pm slot for next season.

  67. Jon L says:

I’m relatively new to all this number stuff, but I would have thought that NBC would let it’s new shows grow in one timelot before throwing them into another? Doesn’t shifting around usually happen after a fanbase has been somewhat established?

  68. ava says:

Chuck fans are such an immature bunch.

  69. lopan says:

I think Southland will be back next season.

  70. Julia says:

Jon L, other than Kings, which is lucky to have aired as many episodes as it did, with the promise to air the rest, what has NBC moved around?

  71. Joe says:

Harper’s Island was fairly consistent with last week. Not good numbers but since it’s a limited run series anyway, CBS won’t cancel it. I could see them moving it to Fridays post-Ghost Whisperer though.

  72. Rhuw Morgan says:

Jon L – Due to NBC giving all of it’s 10pm slots to Jay Leno next season it means shows like Southland will have to find a new slot. The only 10pm slot available will be on Sundays and due to Sunday Night Football, The Golden Globes and The Winter Olympics the earliest a show can get that slot would be March 2010. As a result a lot of NBC’s shows may find themselves in new slots next season.

  73. Tommy says:

Wow I find Southland’s numbers fascinating. I knew it was going to drop when Private Practice came back with new episodes, but I didn’t expect it to free fall. If it doesn’t get any better, or drops any lower in the coming weeks I think we won’t be seeing it listed in the May 5th Upfronts. Remember “My Own Worst Enemy” got canned fairly quickly, even though “Southland” did have a much better start so that isn’t a great comparison. NBC had better hope that Leno works for them, because they are sinking like a rock. And to the people that say these numbers don’t connect to “Chuck”s future I’d have to bed to differ. If “Chuck” is doing comparable to “Southland” in the demos and “Chuck” attracts a higher income demo than I’d give the edge to “Chuck.” Now I am a fan of “Chuck” but I don’t want to come off as a fanboy. Just looking at the numbers and the return on investment of each show (and this is only a side by side comparison.)Both may be cancelled, but if it comes down to one vs the other I’d give “Chuck” the edge – at least it’s a stable mediocre performer and not a sinking ship like “Southland.” Ok now I think I sound like a fanboy….haha

  74. cool says:

Life was on Fridays and was moved to Wednesdays, Lipstick Jungle was the opposite.

  75. Joe says:

Shows like Chuck are what is dragging NBC down. CBS has shown was multi-camera comedies can do. NBC needs to start developing those instead of the quirky shows that don’t generate big enough ratings. They would kill to have Chuck Lorre develop a show for them as the guy is a hit machine.

  76. Jon L says:

Julia, wan’t Southland moved? Or was it just it’s competition that’s changed? I admit I haven’t been paying much attention.

  77. Tommy says:

Jon, “Southland” hasn’t moved, just the ABC shows are no longer in reruns.

  78. Julia says:

Joe, Harper’s dropped .2 in the demo from last week. I don’t think it’ll be pulled before finishing its run, though.

Jon L, Private Practice is new for the first time against Southland. Same slot.

  79. P says:

Wow about Southland. P&R I figured it would happen. I was going to give it a few weeks to see if I should start watching it but if its going to start dropping might as well not start.

Its a shame that’s how I go into a new show now, wait a few weeks to see if it looks to be pulled and then decide to watch or not.

Only shows in recent memory I watched from the start are the “unmentionable” monday show on nbc at 8 and reaper. I was hoping Life would have stuck around too, looked good.

TV, you’ve burned me one too many times damn you! ;)

  80. Joe says:

Still, Harper’s didn’t drop nearly as much as Southland against the same competition. Southland wasn’t nearly as good last night as previous episodes. They didn’t have enough of the non-cop characters.

  81. Julia says:

Didn’t have as far to drop, Joe. ;)

  82. Tommy says:

LOL @ P – “the “unmentionable” monday show on nbc at 8″

  83. Joe says:

Harper’s Island is a total guilty pleasure type of show that’s on the wrong network. It seems like something more suited for The CW than CBS with its all young cast and the soap opera subplots (most of which I could do without but I understand they have to fill 13 episodes with something as people can’t be killed off every five minutes).

  84. AD says:

P you are right is not a quality’s problem or kind of the shows, the problem is people dont watch them because they dont trust the network anymore, people dont want take the risk to be disappointed

  85. Elyk says:

Hey Bill, Is Hells Kitchen averaging a 3 tonight in the 18-29 demographic good numbers? Even with the low viewers?

  86. Elyk says:

    49 my bad.

  87. jay says:

To attempt an answer to JT’s question before a more knowing individual comes a long: From what I am reading lately show producer/writers can demand very high licensing fees from the nets – who have the deep pockets – and since ad revenues from basic cable are still relatively low, too high an asking price would mean your pilot does not get picked up for basic cable. Second, while shows like Closer and Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck have higher production values than the old Gilbert Gottfried Up all Night Late Show, if you really watch them they don’t have the really high costs dogging network shows, such as many many extras, more location shots, stuff blowing up, second and third bananas demanding job security with higher salaries and all the rest. Third, these basic cable hits seem to go on haitus a long time so actors like Kyra Sedgewick, Holly Hunter etc may be induced to seek smaller salaries in exchange for still actively pursuing movie roles ( in fact unlike the old days being a TV star can enhance a film actors’ resume.)There are probably other reasons too, but those seem probable to me.

  88. Matt says:

    Wow everything was waaaay down.

Ouch to Southland, Greys, CSI, The Office, and 30 Rock.

I thought Greys would be higher with a real plot line these days.

Should be interesting to see DVR numbers as most shows had fantastic episodes last night (The Office was fantastic! And 30 Rock as always.)

    Pretty slow going into sweeps/

  89. Bill Gorman says:

Elyk, 3.0 in the demo is just fine for HK in terms of survival, although well down from its average. Viewership is meaningless for its future success.

  90. “What will this site do during the summer when we’re in the land of repeats and reality shows?”

    Talk about Chuck. What else?

By that time, the TSCC fans will have all committed suicide.

  91. thewbviewer says:

Oh man “mujeres asesinas” was so good. I expected way better ratings for mujeres asesinas i think the latin billboard awards affected its premiere ratings. Anyone have telemundo ratings?

  92. JT says:

I’m enjoying “Harper’s Island”. It’s like “90210″ meets “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. I agree it should be on the CW and not CBS(in fact, I said that last week). Clearly this is a bomb for CBS, but if it pulled those kind of numbers on the CW, it would be labeled a “smash hit”. Funny how that works.

  93. Hot Pocket says:

Well everything was down so I guess there were no real losers last night except the ones that already were losers.

  94. Chris says:

Was Bones on twice this week – do people know when it’s even on anymore?

  95. JT says:

By the way, the death scenes on “HI” are pretty cool too ;)

My favorite was last week, when chihuahua girl got dowsed in gasoline then set on fire….and that upstaged the death earlier in the episode where a priest was decapitated while hanging upside down from a trap in the woods.

    Like I said….quality television.

  96. Gaspode says:

NBC needs to move Chuck to Thursdays at 8 eastern, it’s the natural spot for it and it’s a funnier series than Earl or Parks.

  97. Mar says:

All shows took such a hit, it’s unreal. I, too, wonder if the first round of the NBA playoffs had an effect on this. My local CBS station pre-empted the whole CBS line up last night.

  98. Lourdes says:

Yeah that show Mujeres Asesinas is good! Creepy but quite entertaining. Maybe the ratings will increase next weeks.

  99. MIke the Canadian says:

The problem with Southland is the character played by C Thomas Howell, I mean I know its hard for washed up 80s actors but he is simply so awful, as well people haven’t really seen enough of the other characters to form any bond and I think the audience is switching back to ABC to watch those long established shows, why is beyond me, ABC offers nothing that interests me except maybe Castle but I could live without it. Interesting in the news about GE wanting to sell NBC to Time Warner eh, that would be good for chuck, heh.

  100. Alan says:

So, if all shows fell in the ratings, everyone’s on a equal playing field then I guess? If all shows drop, do the networks care as much if the numbers are down if everyone drops at the same time?

(A shame because The Office last night was a gem!)

  101. Jack says:

Why the hell did ABC Pull Samantha who? from the schedule? sure it wouldve done better than the repeat of Greys. Its so idiotic to me.

  102. Terrence says:

I am a fan of “Southland” and despite this week’s drop, it is a show NBC should continue to invest in. They should test it in other time slots because I am pretty sure it won’t stay on Thursdays.

  103. Jack, from 8:30p-9p, the Grey’s repeat last night did better than Samantha Who? last week (1.7 vs. 1.5)

  104. mucittin says:

I don’t understand why some people dislike chuck. It has sweet center(chuck-sarah),comedy and original action scenes. Also,Yvonne Strahovski is the most beautiful actress of NBC.

  105. Terrence says:

And Jack — ABC mishandled “Samantha Who?”. Knowing that “Samantha Who?” could not stand on its own without lead-in support from “Dancing with the Stars”, airing it as a lead-out to a NEW program was completely idiotic.

“In the Motherhood” is actually a very funny show and deserves more than four episodes. They could run each program after each night of “Stars”.

  106. um ok says:

Can’t really say I’m surprised about Southland and P&R, they both suck. Ratings are going to suffer for all scripted shows as long as there is Reality TV. All the shows I like are getting canned anyway. Chuck, Reaper, T:SCC, Dollhouse I guess I’ll be getting more reading done next year. At least my wife and I will still have The Office!

  107. thewbviewer says:

Lourdes didnt you just love the end of the episode? Poor girl tortured and burned alive.

  108. um ok says:

I agree with Gaspode. If they are going to move Chuck it should be to Thursday with it’s comedy lineup. Earl was funny the first season, too bad I love Jason Lee as an actor.

  109. Jack says:

Has there already been article about the death of network TV? If there hasn’t somebody needs to write one because if they can not produce big numbers on Thursday night when you can charge the most ads then they are pretty much done fore. They should just fire everyone at NBC and start over from the ground up. They have no original ideas and no momentum going into next season. ABC looks like the magic is wearing off and their once dominate rating winner Grey’s is on the delcine. You can only have so many must watch episodes till it feels like your beating a dead horse. TV is becoming worse than movies with repeating idea over and over. Just look at how many super hero movies could there be, how many nazi movies can they make, and how many romance comedies with the same plot be made. NBC get some original sitcoms. 30 Rock and the Office can only go so far. The network of Cheers and Seinfeld this is the best you can do. CW come on 90210 maybe if the were 1999 not 2009. CBS can you pull something other than other CSI. No wonder I watch more cable than network TV.

  110. Chris says:

NBC was 3rd for the night – second for some timeslots. They must be pleased – if they can keep this up on a Thursday, P&R and Southland may get renewed, even on those numbers.

  111. djm says:

    OK chuck fans… SHUT UP!!!
i’m a fan but this spam every topic thing is getting annoying. especially when 50% of the THURSDAY comments are chuck related
you guys make chuck fans look like a bunch of rabid losers…

Ouch @ southland… I guess the ratings headed “South”

  112. Anna says:

How many episode does Southland have left ? Private Practice’s season finale is next week, so Southland may get a chance to rebound in May.

Kudos to Private Practice for being the only solid show still on air from the 07/08 season.

  113. djm says:

    i think southland has 3 episodes left…

  114. Nick C says:

Jack, CHUCK has not been renewed. I know this first hand from a producer in an email I received today. They are hopeful and it does look like things are looking up compared to earlier in the week. The email mentioned things got real rocky. My take is that Warner may have reached a price point that NBC is interested in. We’ll know by early next week. Renewed or canceled these producers are going to leak it to the press.

  115. Agent Chuck says:

Would that producer be Josh or Chris?

  116. Julia says:

Anna, Southland should have another two episodes (maybe three?) after next week. The problem is that next week is the last episode before NBC upfronts. But I’m confident it will be on the schedule anyway.

Edit: Also, Southland will have to face the finale of Greys I believe. That will probably be worse than Private Practice.

  117. Paul 80 says:

Southland has some promise, but the grainy under lite look they use to make the show edgy and dangerous looking, works well in the outdoor shots,
but is boring and distracting in the indoor shots. It reminds me of all the lifetime films that look like they bought cheap film stock and rented only 70% of the lights needed.

Parks and Recreation is boring and a waste of Amy’s great comic skils.
Anybody that watched SNL’s Best of Amy last Saturday night, could not come way, not thinking what a wonderful talent she is.
I know you GEN XYZ’s will have no I idea about what I am going to suggest. Amy should have here own show, like Jackie Gleason, Red Skeleton, Flip Wilson, Carol Burnett. A Comic show that has different characters, featuring her in all.

  118. Nick C says:

Agent Chuck, I wouldn’t have mentioned it if it was down to two people. CHUCK has I believe 15 producers now or close to it.

  119. nkinsey says:

Harper’s Island lost 3 million viewers in 3 weeks. Ouch.

And I wish there was more than one (lame) death last night. I found the episode rediculously boring.

And by the way, how drunk/oblivious are all these characters that they don’t even notice their friends vanishing/dying? They mentioned the groom’s uncle (once), and they know about the weird girl (who they weren’t friends with), yet nothing about the priest or chihuahua girl (who I assume was with the bridal party).

  120. Terrence says:

Reality TV is not the death of scripted TV. The problem with much of the scripted TV is that high-concept, limited-premise programs are thrown on the air with stories that can’t be sustained for more than a season.

Also — programs are developed with the advertisers in mind and not the viewer.

  121. Nick C says:

Ah yes, good old Red Skeleton. He fought He-Man right?

  122. Kevin says:

Wow Double P lost a million viewers during the second half hour. Not surprising, that episode was terrible last night.

  123. Chris says:

Robert said: “Jack, from 8:30p-9p, the Grey’s repeat last night did better than Samantha Who? last week (1.7 vs. 1.5)”

No kidding, Samantha Who? never got the benefit of a new Grey’s coming in behind it, except for its first week after the hiatus (when it was up against Idol – interestingly enough, SW? got a 2.2 that week). I guarantee that if ABC had left it alone this week it would have done much better.

But then Steve McPherson isn’t the brightest bulb in the pack.

  124. Julia says:

Kevin, Since this is ABC, there was Greys spillover in the first half hour.

  125. jay says:

As for Jack’s comment, the definitive book on the death of network TV may be like the proverbial great American novel. Everybody’s got a manuscript stashed somewhere, but they don’t know how to finish it. And the villains in the story won’t be like Ahab or Uriah Heep or Charles Foster Kane – they will be petty, small-minded creeps who killed the goose that laid the golden egg out of cowardice, no feel at all for art, no social conscience, and other repulsive qualities we see manifested in corporate America today galore. Instead of riveting reading it will just induce vomiting.

  126. steveq says:

Wow ouch to everything it seems almost everything is down whats going on. Chuck fans get over its gonna be cancelled it wouldnt do that much better on thursday it couldnt do much better when it had essenality no compition this past monday so whats makes you tthink it could do any better in the 8 slot on a thursday

  127. um ok says:

Smallville has gotten so much better since Kristin Kreuk left the show. It’s actually worth watching again, which hasn’t been the case for the last two years or so.

  128. cool says:

But the drop in the finals is not as bad as Castle or Cupid or The Unusuals.

  129. Chris, good points.

  130. Jack says:

is .2 really a big difference? if it was 1.2 then i wouldnt make an issue of it. I realy like sam who? and i dont know why america doesnt. ok its not the best comedy ever but it aint that bad.

  131. kwhy8strm says:

Man I just cant seem to win so far with the new shows. I love Southland and it is dropping every week. Come NBC hang in there with it!

  132. Julia says:

I think everyone was watching the Red Wings sweep the Blue Jackets last night. ;)

  133. Lester's Fan says:

I guess the good news for Southland is that it didn’t drop as much in the last 30 mins as Private and Harpers (which is now officially off of my DVR list)!
It’s a shame about the Office dropping. What a great episode!

  134. Christopher says:

stop taking the shows on and off for 4 weeks and mabey actually keep people watching

  135. Lester's Fan says:

I agree with you about Southland kwhy8strm! I’m liking it more than I thouht I would! If Chuck and Southland go this season, I’m done with network tv (except for The Office & 30 Rock).

  136. eric says:

    CHUCK FANS,

How do you expect to win over more viewers to watch your favorite show, when you alienate people with your arrogant comments that put down other programs?

  137. Agent Chuck says:

Who is putting other shows down. I tried watching P&R but didn’t find it remotely funny. Southland is a good show but it might be to dark for NBC’s new lets give Jay Leno the keys to the network plan.

It is also hard to root for a show that might cause your favorite show to get cancelled.

  138. Jack says:

eric, the majority of Nielsen viewers who might watch the show are not reading this site. The people reading this site have already made up their mind. Also most of you who dislike CHUCK fans are just trolling. You do not care one way or another what happens. Why not ignore what we say if you do not like it?

  139. Julia says:

I still don’t understand how someone like Eric is a troll but someone like Jack is not. Makes no sense to me. :(

  140. Sam B says:

Julia: I’m a huge Wings fan, but it didn’t show here in Seattle =(

  141. Bob says:

Numbers down across the board? Somehow does not surprise me since they keep pulling the off again, on again mentality (this goes for all the networks). I cannot stand this, it makes the TV industry come off as arrogant that we will just watch whatever week they deem fitting. I’m over it, and now mostly DVR anything I may be interested in.

As far as Chuck goes on Thursday night, it would be competing with Ugly Betty (which is a maybe depending on the night they put it on). That would probably be ok, but I doubt it would cause it to gain a lot of viewers. The Thursday night ABC lineup seems to take a strong hit from the NBC comedy block (see 30 Rock’s numbers from last night) and that never goes over well. Would Chuck do better if it was not up against strong demo shows? Maybe, I would hope so, but we cannot really know until NBC pulls its head out of its butt and starts acting like a broadcast network and now a slap-happy bunch of monkies.

  142. Nick C says:

Julia, I’m with you. Pot and Kettle.

  143. Julia says:

Sam, no one watches hockey even if it is on everywhere. ;)

  144. Nick C says:

oh great now I have to worry about “monkies,” as well as trolls. Are monkies big Tony Shalhoub fans?

  145. Bad Robot ! says:

Is a Chuck backlash, a Chucklash?

  146. Alex says:

Julia clearly Eric is a troll because he said something bad about Chuck, he probably drowns babies and beats kittens as well.

Anything that isn’t an over the top Chuck can bring about world peace praise is trolling. Its obvious. I’m amazed you can’t see it.

  147. Duncan says:

I’m still thinking that Parks and Recreation maybe renew, but Thursdays at 8pnm would not be a bad spot for Chuck.

We want a third season, VIVA CHUCK!!!

Oh Josh Gomez is going to be on Carson Daly tonight, and the Chuck vs. the Podcast on Chucktv.net is coming out at 6pmEST/3pm PST

  148. djm says:

    CHUCK FANS,

How do you expect to win over more viewers to watch your favorite show, when you alienate people with your arrogant comments that put down other programs?

im wondering the same thing myself….

  149. Alex, not all Chuck fans are that unreasonable, but there are a few who post over and over again. Of course even they do not seem as prolific in their praise of Chuck as you are about saying something against it at any opportunity, but they do make up for it in volume by having you outnumbered.

Just be glad I didn’t go forward with the “Chuck fans root for prolonged Leno illness” post.

  150. Lester's Fan says:

Could the NBA playoff have driven Thursday’s number’s down? Two large markets, LA (v Utah) and Dallas (v Spurs), both played. I think they were shown on TNT and ESPN.

  151. Alex says:

Can we just be completely crystal clear about this – Chuck will NOT air Thursday 8-9 next season. There is more chance that original episodes will air on a Saturday next season than there is of Thursday night on NBC being anything other than 30-minute comedies. Now Chuck fans please go into a corner somewhere and sit there silently until the up fronts. Thanks.

  152. Alex says:

Robert the key difference is that I don’t bombard every and any post with cancel Chuck posts or fantastic [insert show here] is doing great, less space for Chuck! Nor do I accuse anyone and everyone who happens to like Chuck or think it will be renewed of trolling because they disagree with me.

  153. Lester, I doubt the NBA games had much impact, though they could’ve had some. It’s hard to do direct comparisons, there were actually more people watching broadcast (and TV in general) last night than a week ago, but last week ABC and CW were in repeats.

  154. Julia says:

Just be glad I didn’t go forward with the “Chuck fans root for prolonged Leno illness” post.

    :( I would’ve enjoyed that.

  155. Paul PT says:

Oh my God!!! low numbers for all networks… where viewers went?

CBS is in trouble at 10 pm, and CSI also… the cast lost in recent seasons are not irrelevant! young viewers specially…

  156. Argus says:

Since everyone is comparing Southland to Chuck, I will too. A .5 difference in Demographics isn’t very much, and Chuck has far better product placement opportunities. It seems like a no-brainer.

  157. djm says:

Now Chuck fans please go into a corner somewhere and sit there silently until TUESDAY MORNING. Thanks.

with some slight changes, im sad to say, I actually have to agree with alex for once!

anybody else noticed that bones went up by .3 percent in its second half hour?

  158. the128boy says:

hey everyone saying that *gasp!* numbers were down across the board:

Check the share numbers. They are roughly the same as last week. Earl and parks were the same, Bones was down one, and Survivor was actually up one. CSI, Office, 30 Rock, and Hell’s Kitchen were all down one probably due to grey’s return. Likewise Southland was down 2.

People are simply watching less tv. It’s not to be blamed on “reality shows” or people getting “tired of whats on Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, The Office” and it’s not “Parks and Harpers dropping as predicted”

TV is doing ok, this happens with HUT levels every spring.

Southland and Parks will, i’m sure, be back. They have the disadvantade of airing all 6 episodes during this down time of viewing, and NBC knows that. Parks is already doing noticably better than Kath & Kim was in its third week, building out of Earl for the second time (Kath did it premiere only) and having better ratings even in a lower HUT period (2.3 vs 2.2 for 3rd episode).

And while Southland may not be doing ER numbers, it’s doin pretty fair for NBC even with the drop.

Harper’s is not doing real hot, though I think the former commentors are right that say CBS will probably let it finish its run. However if it drops below a 1.8 or so, it may finish its run in another spot.

  159. the128boy, HUT/PUT was higher last night than a week ago overall, and in the demos. Not vastly so, but still higher.

  160. Trevor says:

Alex stop being such a drama queen. Don’t like reading posts from Chuck fans then get out. Nobody is forcing you to stay on here.

  161. Joe D says:

All the nets must be looking at their 10pm shows with big drops across the board with million+ losses in total viewers and all demos. Even the premiere on UNI couldn’t hold the erosion at the half-hour. Affiliates must be disappointed as their lead-in to local news suffers.

  162. Alex says:

Can I just point something out – for all the talk of how badly Parks is doing can we please remember that it beat CSI, Hell’s Kitchen, Bones, Survivor, Harper’s, Southland and Earl in the 18-34 last night. It was behind Greys, The Office, 30 Rock and Practice for the night 18-34 this isn’t a show bombing horribly especially when you consider that going forward the Thursday comedy line-up on NBC has got to be looking to win the 18-34 as that’s where the major strength is for The Office and to a lesser extent 30 Rock.

Like I said previously I think Parks is back next season primarily because it skews younger and fits in with The Office and 30 Rock in terms of targeting 18-34. The numbers undoubtedly need to grow but I think they can. Parks also has the fact that its from the same people as The Office working in its favour along with Amy Poehler, NBC is giving this show time to see what it does and that means its back next year.

  163. Alex says:

Trevor the Thursday overnight numbers aren’t about Chuck, there’s absolutely no reason why anyone should have to wade through endless ’Save Chuck’ comments in the Thursday overnights especially not when you consider the sheer volume of Chuck outlet that already exist here. I have no real problem with Chuck fans venting during the Monday overnights and no problem with them doing it in the fifty Chuck related posts but its reaching ridiculous levels when it takes over every other post.

It gets even more ridiculous when those same Chuck fans then accuse others of trolling. If you want to discuss Chuck go and do it in the Monday overnights or one of the other five hundred Chuck posts on the site.

  164. Nick C says:

Alex, good point. Then someone should get it on the CW.

  165. Joe D says:

Alex: Amen. Well said. Thank you.

  166. Trevor says:

Alex you make more Chuck posts than anybpdy else on here. Hypocrite much.

  167. Tony says:

NBC needs to announce Chuck’s cancellation already so these Chuck fanatics would stfu. This is 100x worse than the Jericho nutjobs.

  168. cool says:

People has to relax, when NBC cancels Chuck all the Chuck complains will be over :)

  169. Chris says:

Alex, the truth is, your life would be lost if you couldn’t bash the Chuck people. You secretly hope it gets renewed so you can blast people some more. Either way, Alex will go into hibernation for the Summer I guess.

As far as ratings go, I actually enjoyed Bones last night. Smallville keeps getting worse and worse. They mentioned before season 2 started that they would try to introduce Batman on the show. They could get a big bump in ratings if they do that next season.(for those episodes at least) Why is everyone so surprised about P&R ratings sliding? Nobody that has been a cast member for SNL for the past 10+ years deserves their own show. And don’t say Tina Fey, because Alec Baldwin makes 30 Rock funny, not her.

  170. FrankJ says:

I think NBC has got to be disappointed in Parks and Southland just based on the sheer amount of promotional time they’re dumping into those shows. I’ve never seen two shows as heavily advertised. Yet look at the trend Robert posted: “Parks and Recreation ratings continued to fall (3.0>2.5>2.3), as did Southland (3.2>3.0>2.5).” And Southland had two weeks to rev up and hook viewers before getting hit by a new show in the competition.

  171. For the record there are only currently 266 posts (and they include all the regular overnight, NBC weekly info, DVR data, etc) that mention the show which won’t be named.

Alex, I understand yours and others points and agree that Thursday’s overnight results aren’t the place for those comments. But, this is the Internet, and you must understand that your actions ultimately generate more of those comments rather than fewer. I’m not, however, suggesting you need to do anything differently.

On the topic of ratings, I agree about Parks & Rec. It won the 8:30 half hour with 18-34s, besting an especially good airing of Survivor that had a very enjoyable ousting. NBC probably thinks it can grow P&R and I think if they can find a way to air it in 30 Rock’s slot a few times, they may well be right.

  172. Nick C says:

Chris, doesn’t Tina write many of his lines?

    Just saying.

  173. Jon L says:

WOW. Does anyone consider that the volume of Chuck posts might be cut in half (or more) if you just stopped responding to the fanboys’ posts? Hijacked threads are the result of BOTH sides, not just one.

If you don’t like Chuck posts, ignore them.

If you don’t like Alex, ignore him.

  174. Nick C says:

but if you don’t like Nick C, send donations to:

    http://www.livestrong.org

  175. Chris says:

Nick, HE still makes it funny. She is not funny. I think most people would say he’s the best part/character on the show. Anybody can write funny lines, it takes a good actor to perform them.

  176. Terrence says:

128 Boy — people are not watching LESS TV, they are watching it elsewhere or through other media sources (ie — the internet, mobile, cable, time-shifting).

Nielsen has got to develop a method to track viewers wherever and however they are watching as long as the commercials are the same (which they aren’t currently) as that is what the advertisers will be looking to see.

  177. Alex says:

Not only that Nick but I’m not sure Alec Baldwin is anywhere near as funny without Tina Fey to play off, the two of them are an excellent double act on 30 Rock and that’s why the show works. You take either of them out and I don’t think the shows would be anywhere near as good as it currently is.

  178. P says:

Jon L – voice of reason “Hijacked threads are the result of BOTH sides, not just one.”

    Agree 100%.

Now if I were to write something like PS CHUCK RULEZ after I just wrote I agree with Jon L, THAT would be trolling. But I will not. Because both sides are to blame. So foreshame on everyone.

  179. Chris says:

Where do people keep coming off that Tina Fey is funny? SNL has sucked for years. And guess who the head writer was? SNL should’ve ended in the late 90s at least. BTW, Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell aren’t funny either.

  180. P says:

    Terrence,

I personally am watching less TV than ever. Like I mentioned way above in this thread, I would have started eventually watching Southland if it didn’t drop(The reason I didn’t start at first because of the commercial where the officer was taking about having a good day, the dialogue was horrible and cliche and over the top). Now I’ll pay a little more close attention before I start watching in case it continues to drop. That’s how I usually pick up a new show. I don’t want to go in to a show and a month later it’s off the air.

  181. Alex says:

Chris it pains me that you don’t understand how a comedy double act works because that’s what Fey and Baldwin are on 30 Rock and the show doesn’t work with just one of them. Baldwin isn’t anywhere near as funny without Tina Fey to set him up.

  182. Patrick Murphy says:

Normally I’m a Chuck fan but today, I have to play referee…

CHUCK-OBSESSED PEOPLE, LIGHTEN UP!!! None of the half-hour comedies have any bearing on Chuck, since NBC 1) won’t move Chuck to Thursdays, and 2) doesn’t have enough comedies in the works to branch out to another night.

Southland can’t move to 8PM, so it won’t push Chuck out. Only a new show can push Chuck out.

CHUCK HATERS, SHUT UP!!! You don’t know that the show is getting cancelled any better than Chuck fans think it’s going to be renewed. If it’s numbers didn’t justify renewal, NBC would have announced that already. Saying the show itself sucks is a very weak defense on your part because there is not a single TV critic out there that has slammed the quality of the show.

    CAN’T WE ALL JUST….GET ALONG???

  183. LJ says:

Wow, from looking at the ratings, it seems like everyone just forgot there was TV (new episodes no less) last night. Everything is way down. I don’t believe it to be the case, but perhaps all the playoff games had an effect?

And just because I find the conflict hilarious…

Attention all restaurant customers: CHUCK. That is all.

  184. Jack says:

Robert, are you actually saying that a 2.4 18-34 is as important as a 3.9 18-49?

  185. Chris says:

Alex, you don’t think that someone else could take Tina’s place and do the same thing? Tina Fey isn’t the end-all-be-all for female TV comedy. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss could have the same impact. Even Amy Poehler could have the same impact. Baldwin is still the key in my opinion.

  186. Nick C says:

Chris, I’m not sure any of the women you mentioned could play the straight part as well as Tina Fey does on 30 ROCK. Being the straight man isn’t as easy as people think.

  187. ThePattern says:

    Alex says
Not only that Nick but I’m not sure Alec Baldwin is anywhere near as funny without Tina Fey to play off, the two of them are an excellent double act on 30 Rock and that’s why the show works. You take either of them out and I don’t think the shows would be anywhere near as good as it currently is.

Alex, did you see the Alec Baldwin Hulu commercials? They were funny without Tina Fey. However, they do make a great pairing together! The same thing cannot be said for Parks & Recreation. And Chris, SNL was very funny with Will Ferrell and Tina Fey. She especially did a great job during Weekend Update. I agree with you on Jimmy Fallon, hes not very funny. Although, I do like him on Late Night for some reason. He’ll never be Conan O’Brien.

  188. Julia says:

If it’s numbers didn’t justify renewal, NBC would have announced that already.

Just like FOX did for TSCC? That’s not how it works, Patrick, sorry.

  189. the128boy says:

Robert, yeah, I read your comment that HUT was up vs last week. Aggregate demo was up 0.2 at 8pm, 2.9 at 9pm, and 1.3 at 10pm. I was talking more about last night vs fall and winter for those who seem to be comparing current numbers to general numbers earlier in the season.

That’s one reason I’m willing to bet NBC brings both Parks and Southland back. Both are airing exclusively during springtime HUT levels, which are lower than other times. That gives them (and to an extent, Lie To Me probably) a *marginally* lower threshold to clear. Ever so marginal, perhaps, but still worth noting.

  190. Aquat1c F1sh says:

Ow, CSI. Ow. And I know total viewers don’t matter but Grey’s was only 1 million behind CSI in the second half hour… That makes me think back to when CSI had 8 million more viewers than Grey’s for its premiere last fall. Steep drop.

  191. Kryptonite says:

If I were NBC, I would order 5 episodes of SouthLAnd to air in the summer on Mondays since I think NBC needs to move SVU and SouthLAnd there since CBS doesn’t air procedurals at those times except at 10pm with Miami where Jay will be. That will give NBC a good test and idea of what their schedule could do in the fall.

  192. Alex says:

Chris to answer your question, yes I think someone else could take Tina Fey’s place on 30 Rock and do what she does but I think the number of people who could do it as well as she does is tiny. There’s a reason why Fey (like Baldwin) keeps winning awards for 30 Rock, she’s exceptionally good in it albeit in a different way to Baldwin. For the record I think the number of people who could replace Baldwin and does what he does in 30 Rock as well as he does it is infinitely bigger than the list of people who could replace Fey.

Playing the straight role well is incredibly difficult and the straight man always gets over looked and written off as useless in comedy partnerships but the truth is that 9 times out of 10 they’re what makes the partnership works. Just about anyone can deliver the punch line and despite what they say you can teach comic timing. Its much more difficult to set up the punch line.

And Pattern its relatively easy to be funny for 30 seconds not so easy to be funny for 30 minutes.

“Robert, are you actually saying that a 2.4 18-34 is as important as a 3.9 18-49?”

That’s really not what he was saying.

What he was saying is that a 2.4 in the 18-34 is better than a 1.9 or 2.0 or whatever it is Survivor averages out to this week. In the 18-34 (which is where NBC’s comedy line-up is strongest) Parks fits the skew younger mould. The numbers obviously need to grow but the skewing younger on top of everything else the show has going for it in terms of producers and cast means that NBC will stick with it for another season at least.

  193. Yeah, Alex is right, I am in no way saying that relative to Survivor, Parks & Recs numbers are more important than Survivor’s 18-49 numbers. But, that P&R fared better with younger viewers in the 8:30 half hour is a good sign for P&R from the perspective of NBC.

  194. richard says:

poor bones, it should be in at 8pm after american idol

  195. Alex says:

Looking at Bones’ numbers I’m wondering why it isn’t airing 8PM Wednesday’s.

Did Fox heavily promote the Wednesday episode last week? It seems strange to me that the show could pull a 3.0 on Wednesday but only hit mid or in this case low 2’s in its actual timeslot.

  196. Chris says:

Pattern made me realize that Baldwin was hilarious in Along Came Polly and he didn’t have help from any female. He and Philip Seymour Hoffman made that movie. Not trying to sound sexist, but unless its a porn, I can’t ever say where a woman can carry a TV show or movie. I do agree with you Alex when you say there are many more men that could replace Baldwin because there aren’t as many women who can do comedy. I personally don’t find women to be funny in general.

Also, Southland will not be renewed in my opinion.

  197. Trevor says:

Chris your opinion is in the minority. Most find Fey, Ferrell and Fallon to be at at least somewhat funny.

  198. Wow, fans/anti-fans must be having apoplectic fits over Chuck’s pending cancelation to be invading every day’s threads. I thought it might be TSCC fans that were the obsessives this year but I guess Chuck is the new Moonlight. ;-)

  199. Rick Holy says:

“Let there be PEACE in the valley.” I’m a huge fan of CHUCK – and I am doing all that I can to participate in the efforts to see that it gets renewed. But some of the venom you people are spewing at each other – C’mon, GROW UP! Right now some mother is praying over a dying child in a hospital somewhere. Right now someone is being tortured in some conuntry somewhere. Right now someone IN THIS COUNTRY is wondering where his or her next meal is going to come from. Plug your shows – root for them – be advocates – there’s nothing wrong with that – and there’s nothing wrong with taking an OCCASIONAL little “jab” at each other. But for God’s sake, let’s be a little more CIVIL toward each other. Piss and vinegar only go so far. And it is after all, JUST TELEVISION!!!!

  200. chris says:

Funny how NOBODYS commnenting on sv and supernaturals shittyy ratings. jus wanted to point this out since oth gets grouped with 90210 and gg constantly.

oth beats both supernatural demos and smallvilles 18 34 and only slightly behind there 18 49 wit 1.2 to svs 1.3. so HAAAA yes i know sv beats oth regularly but this is still good for those ppl who think sv and supernatural are the best shows ever created.

also altho i hate gg they tied supernaturals 18 49 and were only slightly behind svs AND beat both super and svs 18 34 demo THANKS

  201. Bill Gorman says:

JTF, It’s hard for me to objectively compare Chuck fans and Moonlight fans. Part of it is our site’s history/traffic. A year ago we had 1/8 the traffic we have today, so a small number of Moonlight fans were able to make a relative impact on the site that belied their absolute numbers. Moonlight fans still seem crazier to me, but that, I freely admit, is clouded by time and my advancing senility.

  202. LOL
Bill, I think the big indicator will be on the behavior after cancelation, if it happens, as well. I believe that’s the point when the real “crazy” came to the surface.

  203. djm says:

if chuck gets canned… i personally hope the fans shut up (including myself)

  204. MIke the Canadian says:

I am curious about Eleventh Hour, I was surprised CBS suspended it for that groner Harpers Island, knew during its commercials it would bomb, just the look of it is cheap, must have been produced by Canwest, real awful. I know Eh is in trouble and its know fringe but seriously CBS kinda killed their thursday night. CSI just doesn’t grab anymore, too long so long.

  205. chris says:

anybody have a comment for sv and sn? nebody? now that it does bad well all pretend it doesnt exist

  206. Smallville944 says:

hi Bill are Rob i need some help what are the number of people of 18-49 in US for the ratings so in other words shat is the value in viewers for each 18-49 and 18-34 rating

  207. Riff Rafferty says:

    It’s official. NBC is dead.

    R.I.P. NBC, 1926-2009.

  208. Steve says:

I think we’re pretending you don’t exist. Smallville and Supernatural regularly beat OTH, GG, and 90210. So your ahhHA moment is coming off ridiculously fangirlish. That MAY be why people are ignoring you.

  209. Master Moron says:

I think last week’s episode of Southland drove people away. There were too many boring supporting characters that I couldn’t tell apart. This week it seemed to focus more on Ben McKenzie’s character and his partner and that seemed to make for a better episode. I think they should get rid of most of the supporting characters and just focus on those two. Maybe then they can win back viewers.

  210. MIke the Canadian says:

As far as the Chuck fans go, and some of your ignorant comments towards them keep in mind this website allows comments for discussion, they could easily turn them off. But that is what draws people to this site, as well as the ratings data. People enjoy commenting on their shows and discussion of various trends, that is why this sites traffic increases. If you don’t like the comments that’s ok too but rude and ignorant comments are not needed, your actually fueling the fire, we have all had a favorite show go by the wayside over the years and all wanted to scream at network execs for their bonehead moves, welcome to TV wasteland boys & girl, any other females other than julia here, hehe anyway atleast South Park keeps chugging along thank the good and benevolent great pumpkin for that.

  211. chris says:

actually steve i pointed out that sv regulary beats oth and that i disliked gg and 90210 for that matter so theres for ur fangirl comment. and i jus find it funny everyone here gloats on sn and sv but wen they do bad theres not a single mention of it. and btw supernatural is not that ahead of the other cw duds and recently ties or loses to oth.why does everyone think sn is some juggernaut there std average is 1.2 while the other shitty cw shows are 1.1?and no i dont dislike sv and sn im jus speaking on ratings.

  212. Jon L says:

    chris:

Gloating? No ones gloating. You’re coming off like a child, though.

  213. PBJ says:

If Southland was to fall to the low 2.0s next week, is there any chance NBC would renew it? NBC upfront is the following Tuesday and they would have only 4 episodes to judge Southland on.

I wouldn’t really mind if Southland gets can. It tries to be “The Shield” of network TV but comes off just dull.

  214. chris says:

how is that?im pointing out how a shows ratings werent great last nite jus like everyone else and im a child?and weekly every1 here trashes gg and 90210 for its ratings compared to sn and sv.

  215. chris says:

and i also pointed out i had nothing against sn and sv jus speaking about ratings since every1 has misconception that sn ratings are so far ahead of the rest of the crappy cw

  216. David says:

Is there an accepted/expexted, if any, Spring fall in viewers? In other words, would the lower numbers last night be consistent with historical trends?

  217. AznPhatJax says:

The whole two episodes of Bones a week thing confused people. Bones took a hit.

  218. Alex says:

Chris I could be wrong (and don’t want to check right now) but I suspect that Supernatural and Smallville both hit season lows last night or were at least very close to doing so. For reference sake the last original episodes of both shows were much higher than what they did last night – Smallville did a 1.6 18-49 and 1.7 18-34 whilst Supernatural did a 1.5 and 1.7.

  219. David, yes, it is an expected seasonal outcome, though I think it’s probably sometimes a bit overstated/overused as a reason. But it is expected. A Thursday in the middle of February (winter, more people inside) had about 8% more 18-49s watching than last night had. But last night actually had a tiny, tiny bit more 18-49 viewers in the aggregate than one week ago.

  220. chris says:

yes alex your rite that was the last new episode 2 weeks ago but before that sn had 1.1 and 1.2s. and im not saying sn and sv dont beat the other shows regularly i no they do just saying the ratings are not as great as some people on this site claim.

  221. paul says:

    CHRIS
You Probably think Steve O is funny. You are a JACKASS for your porn comment

  222. Holly says:

Too bad for Southland. I haven’t watched since the premiere, but NBC needs a hit.

CSI is in serious trouble. I’ll admit, I didn’t think Petersen’s exit would hurt it that much, but it hasn’t been over a 4.0 in over a month.

  223. Brent says:

Does anybody know what kind of info the networks get from Nielsen about the viewing hobbits of individual people, like if I had a Nielsen box and I always watch survivor and Chuck would Nielsen be able to tell the network that 2 Million View X’s watch both of those shows and if the were on at the same time people in that group would have to make a choice of what to watch.

  224. Joseph says:

My Name is Earl’s ratings went up from last week thats good news atleast to me as I seem to be one of its only fans on here I hope NBC brings it back next season

  225. David says:

Robert, thanks. Holly, you’re right. For the benefit of all of its shows, NBC needs a hit. How else would anyone know what is on that network? You can only promote to people who are watching.

  226. RJ says:

Earl’s ratings are way down this season. hells kitchen went down too. what’s happening.

  227. Julia says:

any other females other than julia here

There’s Holly, and I think Clutz, and any Moonlight fangirls still hanging around. And… um… hmm. I never noticed that before.

  228. Chris says:

I’m surprised Southland is so low and it doesn’t have CSI to compete with. It’s got some of the best lead ins that NBC has and it has proven that it’s no ER. This is all the more reason Chuck should return. It has harder competition without the comfort of a time slot that so many people are used to tuning in to, such as the old ER slot, yet it puts up similar numbers.

  229. MIke the Canadian says:

Brent interesting question I remember years ago trying to become a nielson family got pissed off over the cancellation of The Greatest American Hero 81-83, haha I know I was young anyway, but we are Canadian and they didn’t have a system back then.
I have often thought it would be very easy and cheap to build a device that would log channel hits much like website hits for ratings and as long as people gave consent tabulate data for all TV watching even easier to do with digial cable, this should be done, in the age of the internet its far more accurate a picture than what nielson can provide currently, and I have often wondered who actually is a nielson family and why do they seem to all watch Dancing with the Stars and American idol, of the 20 or so people I know well no one watches either, and we all fit the middle class boobtube watching crowd, statistically speaking then where do we fit in their numbers what does that one nielson family represent in terms of real numbers of people in the ratings numbers.

  230. Chris says:

Mike the Canadian, I made the same argument a few days ago and got slammed. Watch out! :) I agree there must be a better way of taking ratings and also agree that those reality shows are garbage.

  231. Michael says:

    The finals are up here:
    http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63310451/m/181100602/p/6
Harper’s only got 7.02 million and a 1.9 in the demo. Flashpoint usually gets a 1.9 in the demo for a new episode- and it’s on FRIDAY. When will CBS yank this off?
Southland only got a 2.4 in the demo- the same as Chuck.
Parks & Recreation only got a 2.3.It barely beat Earl.

  232. Alex says:

If there were a relatively cheap, easy and reliable alternative to the Nielsen system then it would be in operation right now, networks and more importantly advertisers don’t use the system because they have some weird love affair with it they use it because it’s the best option to get the data they want. As it stands there isn’t a cheaper, easier or more reliable way to get the data that Nielsen provides – advertisers really don’t care about the number of people watching a show (so the ‘channel hits counter’ wouldn’t work) they care about who those people are and that’s the detail Nielsen provides.

By all means please create a cheap, reliable and easy system that measures how many people are watching any given show but if you take it to advertisers and/or the networks they’ll also want to know how it measures how many under-50’s that number represents and how many under 30 and how many men under 30 and how many female trend setters under 20. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The Nielsen system isn’t perfect and nobody (not even Nielsen) thinks that it is but for better or worse its currently the best system anyone has.

The anecdotal ‘no one I know watches…’ or ‘everyone I know watches…’ argument is all well and good but unless you know a huge number of people and categorically disprove the Nielsen numbers it means nothing. The fact you know 20 people who don’t watch Dancing with the Stars or American Idol isn’t particularly surprising since of the 303 million people that live in the US Nielsen estimates that about 25 million of them watch American Idol and about 20 million watch Dancing with the Stars. To be honest it wouldn’t surprise me if you knew 20 million people who didn’t watch either of those shows, the fact that you knew 20 million people would surprise me though. But as things stand more than 280 million people in the US don’t watch Dancing with the Stars and about that number don’t watch American Idol either.

  233. MIke the Canadian says:

Actually given the depths of GIS databases nowadays and some electronics the device wouldn’t need to know the details of the people cause most of that is already known, but it could easily design around that, but yes like it or not nielson is the only system we got I’m just surprised that a newer system hasn’t been tried, or is there not alot of money in it I guess to bother. Just curious with the 400+ Million people in North America allot of them don’t watch any TV if you take the ratings numbers as is.

  234. andrew says:

The best shows on thursday are the cw’s Smallville and Supernatural and nbc’s Parks and Recreation

  235. Julia says:

Mike the Canadian, Nielsen only measures Americans, not all of North America, and what these numbers tell is that a lot them don’t watch any TV on broadcast nets which every study done on the subjects suggests as well.

  236. Passing Through says:

    new visitor here and…
wow you people are all chuck chuck chuck
    its insane
    i mean, what the heck
    good luck to you nutters
    chuck chuck chuck!

  237. Alex says:

Mike the devices would need to know the details of people because they’d need to know who is and isn’t watching. If for example you have a household of dad, mum, teenage son and tween daughter the device will need to measure which of them is and isn’t watching any given show because that’s what the advertisers want to know. Its not enough to know that those demos exist in the household they need to know if those demos were watching the television and more importantly ads so whatever device you have needs to be able to seperate the various members of the household.

  238. MIke the Canadian says:

They actually do have a canadian system though they don’t give allot of info…

    from http://www.nielsenmedia.ca/;

Borealis was built-to-order for the world’s most complex television market. No other country has to deal with the massive volume of programming, stations, and telecast formats along with multiple-time zones, languages, survey panels and US simulcast. The Canadian market also requires measures not used elsewhere, such as Average Minute Reach/Frequency.

Now whatever that means I have no idea but apparently we canadians are hard to track, heh

Oh well time to warm up the TV almost 9pm here.

  239. Julia says:

Sorry, I should have specified. These Nielsen numbers do not include Canadians. ;)

  240. MIke the Canadian says:

Small thumb print scanners are real cheap creating digital signatures for each family member, the key would be super cheap and not a pain in the ass to log viewing I would think, anyhow just postulating on the possible is all not looking to take over the ratings world, I have long been interested in marketing and statistics now all of you go watch Dollhouse, lol.

  241. Dianne says:

I have a theory that the ratings for any particular episode don’t reflect the audience reaction to that episode, but to the episode that ran the week before.

  242. Evan says:

This isn’t as bad as it looks for NBC. “Southland” held on to much more viewers throughout the whole hour. It didn’t loose many viewers. That is great. “Southland” is good for that in the few weeks it has been on. ALso everyone turned to ABC for the new “Grey’s” and “Private”. I am sure viewership won’t be as strong for ABC next week. “The Office” also beat “CSI” in 18-49. All in all, it wasn’t that bad for NBC.

  243. Lizardman says:

I think the reason you don’t see much mentioned about Supernatural and Smallville is because they are on the CW and nobody cares. CW doesn’t obviously care how they do as they keep showing reruns constantly instead of airing new shows all in a row. It’s difficult to tell week to week what they’ll be running.

I think these are some of the weirdest numbers I have ever seen overall. Was there a big drop in overall viewership? Everything sort of did poorly. For example Bones pulls a 3.0 a week ago Wednesday and then a 2.0 for the first half hour last night at its regular time. That drop for Southland seems sort of massive for two weeks overall.

By the way Supernatural and Bones are two of the three shows I do not miss each week on commercial TV.

    Lizard

  244. S. says:

Interesting that Private Practice did not have a season low considering the episodes aired out of a new episode of GA. That honor goes to the episode where Kadee Strickland’s big story and bad acting lost it 2M viewers at halftime, final numbers. So much for the theory that numbers reflect last week’s episode, and not what people are watching. People are much more tolerant to bad plots than they are to bad acting. With a bad arc there is always hope that it can improve the next week, there is no hope for bad acting.

  245. Jaye says:

didnt read all of the 200odd posts, but the NBA playoffs were on last night with Bulls/Boston and Lakers/some other team, and that def. could have affected the numbers as 3 of the 4 areas are big markets

  246. Samuel says:

What the heck happened? Nuclear explosion? Tornado? Big bang?

Hell, everything took a hell of a drop… Hope this gona get back on tracks next week.

Or maybe DVR numbers are gonna jump big time.

  247. Alex says:

Mike the general problem with any ratings system particularly in the US is that to achieve the kind of detail required in the time demanded it has to use a small sample group simply because trying to make some kind of record of what everyone in America is watching and how they fit into the various demographics would be obscenely expensive and time consuming not to mention bring up all kinds of privacy issues and then you have to try and work out how you’re going to account for the people who opt out of the system. It just gets increasingly complicated.

The idea of fitting thumb print scanners is lovely but doesn’t overcome the fact that you’re still going to be using a tiny sample group so ultimately the exact same problems and complaints would arise. Logistically there’s just no way to measure a huge number of people in the detail and time that Nielsen does with their comparatively small sample.

There are however many, many ways in which you can get a bigger sample size of just the general audience size but the devil is in the details.

  248. Ben says:

There are 2 ABC logo images in the table :P

  249. Ben, just goes to show how much attention anyone paid to that it went all day without anyone noticing it! Fixed. :)

  250. LR says:

I have a couple of questions about the Leno show.

One, I would assume he is going to go on hiatus for the summer, or different times of the year…what are they going to do then? Surely not reruns of Leno. Isn’t there room for some 13 episode runs of different shows during a Leno Hiatus? I would think a hiatus is more likely if he gets away from the talk format (I haven’t been following the details of his show since I will never watch it…so maybe this is a dumb question).

Second, Doesn’t NBC have to have a backup plan in case it absolutely falls off a cliff in a month or two or six? I realize everyone assumes it will be cheap and get decent numbers compared to The Tonight Show, but if he tries a new concept it IS possible it would do low numbers…….especially in 18-34. Though I suppose it is so cheap it wouldn’t matter?

Of course I can’t stand late night talk shows and can’t believe what numbers they get now…and surely can’t understand how Leno is considered watchable….so I suppose I am biased in that regard.

At any rate, are they not going to have some midseason replacement/13 episode shows on the back burner for summer or just in case?

  251. Boris says:

    LR says:

“I have a couple of questions about the Leno show.

“One, I would assume he is going to go on hiatus for the summer, or different times of the year…what are they going to do then? Surely not reruns of Leno.”

I’ve seen both 39 and 46 weeks of “fresh programming” quoted for Leno, with the latter in the preponderance. And NBC has the Vancouver Olympics.

  252. Dianne, it’s not a new theory either and I, also, believe it to be partially true. Otoh, where you have a bunch of people tuning out between the first half and the second half then I think that has a LOT to do with the episode in question.

  253. JARVIS says:

“Oh my goodness, I’m surprised at how much Parks&Rec and Southland dropped! Is NBC forbidden from having a hit show? :(

    Since Heroes got renewed, YES!!!!!

  254. Bill Gorman says:

LR, my memory jibes with what Boris wrote. I remember reading 46 weeks of fresh Leno episodes/year. NBC could either run repeats or guest hosts when Leno’s not behind the desk live, just like with the Tonight Show.

I’d imagine there’s some backup plan. Whether it’s 5 nights a week of Law & Order reruns, or adding 5 hours of Dateline NBC or some combination. I doubt it’s producing extra scripted shows to be held in reserve. NBC’s trying to save money, not spend more “just in case”.

  255. Boris says:

    Lizardman says:

“I think the reason you don’t see much mentioned about Supernatural and Smallville is because they are on the CW and nobody cares. CW doesn’t obviously care how they do as they keep showing reruns constantly instead of airing new shows all in a row. It’s difficult to tell week to week what they’ll be running.”

I have to say the CW is also rather perplexing when it comes to the episodes streamed on line–I realized last night that I had forgotten about the new one, and the most recent episode on the site was “After School Special,” from January. Things have now been updated to include “Sex and Violence,” leaving them five episodes behind.

And I thought Fox was erring by holding “House” episodes for eight days rather than six. Sheesh. At least I discovered that Wallace Shawn is on Gossip Girl in the process.

  256. starmud says:

harpers island is becoming a real snooze, the show seriously needs to start focusing on the mystery and killer. the past three episodes have just been the show pulling you along watching these kids do this or that on the island and reveal more about their lives and relationships. with about 5-10 minutes of time focused on the killer and horror/mystery aspects of the storyline. it was sold a mystery, whos done it event yet theres little of that in the actual show.

plus the “shady” characters are really cliche and the story isn’t very ’smart’. no one asks where people are, it feels like more time has gone by in the story than has. days seem off with past events… its just not very well written or pieced together.

a mini event like this has to pull people in from the get go, while i hope it eventually picks up; there just isn’t much to keep you connected to any aspect of the show. three episodes in and i don’t really care to even know who the killer is nor do i really care about who gets killed. i love mini events like this but so far it hasn’t lived anything near the hype or marketing.

it’ll be interesting to see how next week folds with ugly betty back. i can see the show taking a fair hit with the surprise return and forced hiatus.

  257. Bill, I could be wrong but I would think NBC would have some sort of fallback position for mid-season if the Leno idea some how tanks, though… even just to have a few extra shows on standby for potential production if early fall numbers come in at a less than satisfactory level?

  258. Bill Gorman says:

JTF, as I wrote above, I am sure there is some plan. But I’d be pretty certain it does not involve spending any money in advance. This is NBC we’re talking about.

As for what level a disaster would be, I’ll do a whole post in August about this, but here’s how the NBC 10pm M-F shows did this season (excuse the terrible formatting):

Show STD 18-49 Rating Da Airings
    DATELINE FRI 1.5 ….F.. 19
    LIPSTICK JUNGLE 1.5 ..W.F.. 12
    MOMMA’S BOYS 1.8 M…… 4
    MY OWN WORST ENEMY 2.0 M…… 9
    LAW AND ORDER 2.1 ..W…. 22
    MEDIUM 2.5 M…… 11
    SOUTHLAND 3.1 …T… 2
    LAW AND ORDER:SVU 3.3 .T….. 23
    E.R. 3.4 …T… 23

Leno did a 1.4 demo rating last fall at 11:30. If he only does a tiny bit better, which I’d say is a given, he beats the fall Monday and all Friday shows from this season, it’s not inconceivable that he beats the L&O numbers. So, the hurdle for Leno to beat 3 of the 5 days from this season is pretty low already.

  259. Joe D says:

Thanks, Bill. This is very informative. I agree that the Leno threshold is lower than ordering new scripted shows for 10pm. Aside from the lower production cost, Leno is a well-known brand and easier to promote across the NBCU nets. They must have gotten a real scare though when he checked into the hospital this week. NBC has a lot riding on one person.

  260. Jesse says:

@Chris (the one who doesn’t think Tina Fey is funny)

Doesn’t she have an Emmy or Golden Globe or whatever to back up the argument that she’s a talented comedic actress? And no, not just anyone can write a sitcom. Check that, anyone can write a sitcom, you’re right. The Big Bang Theory proves every week than anyone can write a sitcom. But to write a funny sitcom? That takes serious talent. And then to juggle Emmy winning writing with Emmy winning acting? Yeah, Tina Fey is pretty much awesome.

  261. yuri says:

    Wow P&R is really on a landslide… :P

With numbers like these and with much less competition, I can’t even fathom how NBC would choose it over Chuck…

  262. ABCFanatic says:

    Grey’s Anatomy and Survivor rocks

Bones and Parks & Recreation are in danger

  263. ABCFanatic says:

Harper’s Island will be cancelled soon enough

  264. Trevor says:

Chuck is going to be renewed folks. Check out Spoilertv.net

  265. Chris the TV Sage says:

My opinion: Parks and Rec is going to get a second season no matter how low the ratings drop (and I don’t think they’re going to drop much farther). I think NBC wants to be in business with Amy Poehler and wants to keep Greg Daniels happy.

There’s still a seed of a good show here if they can just find it.

I think this is it for Earl on NBC, and I’m fine with that. It was a good show that has told all of its entertaining stories already.

  266. The way the Television landscape is going any show delivering 8 million viewers a week has to be considered good. If the networks keep fighting this reality they will have an 80% turnover in programming year to year, which isn’t exactly a healthy business model. For the record- I like Southland and will keep watching.

    chuck

  267. Tommy says:

yuri, The show that must not be named is not comparable to Parks & Rec. For one thing one is an hour long and the other is a 30 min sitcom. Unless the Monday night show is shorted to 30 mins (which I highly doubt) you cant compare the two. I know all of us (the fans of that show) what it renewed, and I still think it’s has SLIGHTLY better than 50/50 odds at this point. We will know in about 2 weeks so until then just watch the show and hope for the best.

  268. josh f says:

    ALL TIME LOW FOR GREY’S???

    HA

  269. jay says:

Zucker must be lighting votive candles and doing rain dances, hoping Leno doesn’t catch some superbug in the hospitol and lose his voice permanently or something. But Leno with a deafmute interpreter or a mime doing a pantomime of his monologue might do better than the current ten to eleven NBC lineup.

  270. LR says:

Good info Bill. It really does seem that it is almost impossible for Leno to fail. If it does better than expected it could influence a lot decisions down the road.

IMO, fans of scripted drama have to root for Leno to fail….not a good trend. But perhaps inevitable?

  271. Brian D says:

Harper’s Island is a weak show I don’t anticipate the show coming back and pretty much thought that after seeing the pilot. I’m definitely very disappointed in Southland’s numbers. Southland the last few weeks had very strong second half numbers and that’s not the case with this weeks ep. I haven’t watched it yet but hope it’s not disappointing. Supernatural is definitely one of my favorite shows. Literally I look forward to getting off of work Saturday morning coming home and watching it. While this weeks ep was decent I was somewhat disappointed looking for some better plot exploration as opposed to taking some detour episode that brought us back to the past exploring not much that has anything to do with what’s currently going on.

  272. Jenna says:

Trevor…what exactly are we supposed to see on spoilertv.net in regards to Chuck’s renewal? I didn’t see anything on there. Am I missing something or is that your site that you’re trying to plug? ;)

  273. Julia says:

Jenna, as Robert posted in a comment on the Friday ratings thread, the thing Trevor is referring to has been denied by Josh Schwartz.

  274. Andy says:

About bad acting vs bad writing theory: So how is it possible that people still watch Private Practice considering Kate Walsh’s bad acting every week?

  275. Jenna says:

Yeah Julia, I ended up finding the rumor Trevor is referring to on some other sites. It’s CLEARLY just a rumor…I put 0% faith in something like that. Until I hear it from a trustworthy source I’m going to take that for what it’s worth.

  276. Gaspode says:

I’m a Chuck fan (who would like to see it moved to Thursdays) but I also like Castle, The Unusuals, Better off Ted, Terminator: TSCC and Life. As you can imagine this is an antsy time for me, it’s like a massacre of quality lately even though to some extent I can understand it since they aren’t bringing in the money.

Sometimes it seems like some sort of subscription HBO-lite version of the networks where they could put good but lower rated shows would be nice.

  277. AdamLambert09 says:

Don’t you mean Smallville got 3.807 and 3.888 Viewers?
That would be more Smallville friendly.
