Surviving Suburbia, Samantha Who? And Castle Sit On ABC’s Bubble

Posted on 28 April 2009 by Bill Gorman

Three shows ABC shows are legitimately on the bubble: Samantha Who?, Castle and Surviving Suburbia.

Samantha Who? is no longer on ABCs schedule. It did fine airing behind Dancing With the Stars, but on its own it did terribly. Still, it is in its second year, and was brought back under a similar situation last season. Castle started reasonably strong, but has weakened substantially, and last night managed only a 2.1 in the all important 18-49 demo. That’s cancel territory. Surviving Suburbia has the plum post-Dancing slot and slipped last night to a 2.4 18-49 demo rating, that’s marginal for renewal. If I had to make the call today, and ABC’s upfront meeting isn’t until May 19, I’d give the thumbs up to Samantha and Suburbia and down to Castle.

These shows aren’t even close to the bubble: In the Motherhood, Better Off Ted, The Unusuals and Cupid, they are all going to be cancelled.

And could Scrubs actually be coming back for another season? After According to Jim anything is possible, but I doubt it.

On April 23, ABC announced the official pick-ups of the following shows for the 2009-10 season: America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Brothers & Sisters, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Supernanny, Ugly Betty, Wife Swap. Not a surprise in the bunch.

This is a breakdown of ABC scripted shows and their renewal and cancelation prospects. Here are the others:

Our Renew / Cancel index predicts potential renewal for *next* season: Canceled/Not Returning, In Danger, or Renewal Likely for 2009-10, Renewal Announced.

Notes:

To remove clutter from the table, I have included only the day/timeslot with the most airings for According to Jim and Scrubs.

According to Jim: After 8 seasons, and recent horrible ratings, but presumably great sydication profits, ABC’s According to Jim looks like its prime-time run is coming to an end this season as one of the stars says the stage has been bulldozed. That seems pretty final to me.

Scrubs: Eight seasons is the end for Scrubs as well. Update: Or perhaps not. I am doubting that retraction, I believe he spoke the truth initially and then got his hand slapped and tried to backtrack. I’m keeping it marked as final season.

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 viewership divided by its networks Season to Date average 18-49 viewership.

How did we come up with our Index? We found that last season, the future of a show was nearly directly related to its adults 18-49 average viewers divided by its networks 18-49 average viewers. Many other factors may matter, but they all seemed to boil down to that one number. Because American Idol so skewed Fox’s 18-49 average, and would make nearly all Fox shows fall into the “cancel” range, for Fox, I used the last STD 18-49 average *before* Idol. Last season, if a show had better than 92% of its network’s average 18-49 viewership (0.92 in our index) it was pretty safe, below that level it was in danger.

Remember that plenty can change before the end of the season, particularly for the shows with indexes between 0.80 and last season’s renewal line of 0.92. The list is presented in a (and has to be, since I cannot predict future ratings) “what would happen if the season ended today” mode. Could the renewal line be 0.86 this season? Possibly. It might also be 0.95. Might it be 0.70? No chance.

  1. dumont says:

‘Better Off Ted’ and ‘Cupid’ are still atop the bubble: if next Tuesday’s ‘Better Off Ted’ and any one of the next three ‘Cupid’s’ show significant upward bump in A18-49, they are in serious contention. If not, then their bubble has burst.

  2. dumont, because Better off Ted is a sitcom, I’m inclined to believe it still at least has a slim chance. Cupid, isn’t a 30 minute sitcom though, and its chances are so slim, I don’t see them at all. Numerically, the bubble seems to already have burst for it.

  3. Chmarin says:

I disagree completely. :P I think ABC would rather get rid of Suburbia than Castle… I still don’t know what they were thinking when they picked this show up… The retention out of DWTS is pathetic, but Castle is managing to hold on to Suburbia’s audience week after week – and yes, I’m aware that the 18-49 demo is only a 2.1… :D Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

  4. Booji says:

Can anyone explain why Castle’s on at 10? It doesn’t seem like a 10:00 show to me, and I would think it would do better at 8 or 9.

  5. shelly says:

Booji, that’s one of the mysteries that is ABC’s programming schedule. Really wish ABC had left Castle after DWTS.

Much as I would like to disagree with this assessment of Castle’s renewal chances, I don’t have much faith in the same network that got rid of shows like The Job, Miracles, Knights of Prosperity, and Pushing Daisies.

  6. Holly says:

Castle is at 10 because thats where ABC had an open spot. 9 is taken on every night by hit shows that they weren’t about to move. 8 was open on a couple of nights, but it makes more sense to put the comedies at 8 and the dramas at 10. Castle isn’t directly after DWTS now because Stars is usually 1 1/2 hours and it would be stupid to start an hour-long drama at 9:30.

  7. Jennifer says:

See I think Castle still has a good shot of being renewed. There’s a lot of buzz recently online for support for this show. I think it should be in a different time slot. I think it would do even better. I also think Samantha Who will not be renewed. Castle has better numbers than it. ABC should keep Castle and just move it to an early time. Just my opinion.

  8. Holly says:

@Jennifer, When? Where would you put it?

  9. Maureen says:

Please bring back Samatha Who?!, Better off Ted, and The Unusuals. All Are great shows. I hate Dancing with the stars, and all the reality crap on TV!!

I am a huge fan of Scrubs – and the seasons has been great, but I would like the show to end this season, and go out in Style.

  10. Jennifer says:

I’m not sure but Monday night against CSI Miami is not helping. I would have to look at the schedule more closely. I just would like Castle stay and be renewed.

  11. Alex says:

Castle has grown on me a lot over the course of its run and I would like to see it return but ultimately its fate rests on whether ABC feel they have to bring a new drama from this season back, if they do then Castle seems to be their only choice after The Unusuals collapsed last week. Unfortunately I’m not holding my breath though, so I guess Nathan ‘show killer’ Fillion strikes again!

  12. rick says:

abc should try castle on wednesdays at 8 in the fall as its an easy slot castle could definately build an audience there.

i think better off ted should be renewed and should air tuesdays at 8.

better off ted is definately the best new sitcom of the season and the best abc has had since it screwed over carpoolers

  13. s says:

I just hope SW? gets renewed dont care for the rest

  14. Jennifer says:

I never thought about Wednesday nights at 8 for Castle. That’s a great idea Rick.

Hopefully ABC realizes that there is a dedicated fan base starting for this show.

  15. Alex says:

Out of interest is there any show with a ‘dedicated fan base’ that we aren’t sending to Wednesday at 8?

  16. Chmarin says:

Castle will bomb if moved to Wednesday at 8… It’s not a strong enough show to start off an evening… I think that, if renewed, the show should stay in the 10pm timeslot. The problem with ABC’s schedule is that Castle can only be put on Tuesday or Wednesday nights, because they won’t put a crime show after Grey’s Anatomy or Desperate Housewives, and it sucks because Tuesdays and Wednesdays are ABC’s weak spots, especially in the fall, without Lost.

And as far as Castle’s current timeslot goes, I think ABC should renew Samantha Who?, put that show after DWTS and then put Brothers & Sisters in the 10pm timeslot – the show has proven that it can stand on its own without a Housewives lead-in (when the 2-hour special aired), so that would make a great female-centered lineup. Plus, Desperate Housewives could help launch a new show for ABC.

  17. the128boy says:

If Surviving Suburbia returns, they might as well change the name to According To Bob.

  18. Annie says:

ABC has to renew Samantha Who? !!!

  19. the128boy says:

My take on ABC’s renewal prospects % chance of renewal:

    70% Samantha Who?
    60% Better Off Ted
    55% Castle
    50% Surviving Suburbia
    3% The Unusuals
    2% Cupid
    1% In The Motherhood

I know a lot of people would disagree with Ted, but I feel a *little* more sure of this given the Scrubs renewal talk (even though i don’t think that will come to fruition). Ted nearly matches Scrubs numbers, so maybe ABC isn’t as disappointed with their anemic Wed 8pm hour as they, arguably, should be.

  20. makulit says:

Come on Bob Saget over Nathan Fillion?! I want to puke! Actually, I already did on Bob Saget’s face. Hahaha! Isn’t there an “official” online petition to keep Castle? ABC please keep Castle!

  21. Chris says:

I’m glad that the knowledgeable people on this site are so optimistic about Samantha Who?. It’s discouraging when your favorite show gets batted around by the network like a cat playing with a mouse.

My own opinion is that it should get renewed based on how badly all the new comedies have done and the fact that SS is doing worse behind DWTS than SW? did. Hopefully it gets a third season.

  22. Brian D says:

Castle’s numbers need to stabilize and bounce to stay otherwise I feel the chances will go up in smoke.

  23. Holly says:

Brain, Castle’s number appear to have stabilized. Unfortunately, they’ve stabilized at around a 2.0, which isn’t good.

  24. eveleigh says:

How dare ABC remove “Samanthan Who” for the air. “Samantha” is the best. It is funny, smart and charming. Get real!!! Leave it on the air for all of us to enjoy.

  25. eveleigh says:

What???? Taking “Castle” off the air already. Give the progam a chance. I love this quick witting show.

  26. CP says:

With Leno not taking up five hours of their programming (at least not yet), I don’t see why Castle wouldn’t be renewed. Put it on a different night but keep it at 10. I think it could beat Leno in ratings on whatever day they put it on other than Mondays.

  27. Justin says:

I am a big fan of a lot of ur shows and i am really interested in Castle. Castle is a great show that is like no other. It has more mystery, action and comedy in any other show because the producers are able to mix it together and make one good show. Castle has a great cast, a great storyline, and good ratings. I know that ABC is thinking about cancelling Castle but on their last two episodes if they can get the rating average to go up or stay the same i think it is a worthy show to have and if u dont want it let a different network have it they will want a great show like Castle.

  28. Justin says:

More people want Castle then most of the other shows They love Nathan Fillion and he makes a great Richard Castle. GO CASTLE GO CASTLE GO CASTLE GO CASTLE U CAN WIN!!!!

  29. Bill Gorman says:

CP, since Castle has dropped so rapidly, its average is misleading. Last night it did a 2.1 rating, that would be an Index of 0.78. That’s cancel territory.

  30. 2.0 in the finals…

  31. Sam says:

Latest news is that in a big shocker, ABC wants Scrubs to come back for a 9th season if certain conditions are fufilled. This is not a rumor! Scrubs has exceded expectations on a number of ratings, most importantly to ABC, it has been winning its timeslot (surprise!) on adult men. “Scrubs” Ranks No. 1 in its Slot with Men 18-34 for the 3rd Time in 5 Telecasts as of this week (April 22nd telecast). The conditions ABC has laid down include:

    1) All major characters return for a few episodes (pop in and out during the season). This includes Zack Branf. This may be tough to meet since some characters like Donald Faison have already signed with other shows or pilots.
    2) The residents are the focus and are in all shows.
    3) Scrubs would be a second half (2010) replacement, like According to Jim this year.
    4) A few characters have to be resigned for a full season such as janitor with no name.

ABC knows that this is a long shot – that getting back all the characters even for a few episodes may be tough. There is also consideration on if they can sign a few of the major characters (i.e., janitor, chief nurse) back for the whole season.

How to tell if ABC will be renewing the show or not? Pay close attention to the last episode. It is filmed with two endings. If they give away janitor’s name, the show is probably not going to be renewed. If they do not give away his name, then the announcement will be forthcoming that the show is renewed and the above terms were met. A little insider news I picked up from a friend at ABC.

  32. CP says:

Even if that’s the case, if they can renew Ugly Betty, which I never understood to begin with, then they should renew Castle. Its on such a bad night. Moving it would boost ratings I would think.

  33. shelly says:

Not exactly on topic, but I wanted to let Castle fans know that Stana Katic will be on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight, presumably to promote Castle (I don’t know of any other movies or projects she’s in right now). Apparently, for what it’s worth, ABC is still trying to get the show noticed (I also noticed that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are still attending the DWTS show on Monday nights).

  34. AJ says:

Well, ABC, I have lost all faith in you!! You are gonna cancel The Unusuals (a terrific show) and Samantha Who? may also be cancelled! This is insanity and I seen the new ABC ad for Ugly Betty returning where they said “We listened to America’s cries and now we bring Ugly Betty back!” I am like, you are liars because ABC never listens to the fans because if they did, then a lot of the shows that were recently cancelled on ABC would still be going!

  35. Budo says:

I can live without My Name Is Samantha. Castle is a keeper, as well as Better Off Ted.

  36. S. says:

If Castle was at 8pm fans would be complaining that he never had the chance of a good lead-in.

The problem with Castle, is that unlike the other mid-season shows it has the highest rejection rate. It is the show that had the highest premiere, hence the still high index number, and now is at the same level as the other shows in the demo. It has to hurt it’s chances that more people actually sample it and rejected it than any of the other shows. ABC already know that it is a not something that grows on people, quite the contrary.

  37. Dr Cast says:

SUBURBIA will do fine…people seem to like Bob and there is a very good cast around him. I think they’ll get a shot. Good stuff always starts off slow.
This is a little show that COULD Make the CUT.

  38. brandy says:

Why is Samantha Who likely to be renewed with lower numbers than Castle?

  39. Bill Gorman says:

Castle’s average masks a dramatic drop. It did a 2.0 final rating in the 18-49 demo last night.

  40. Matt says:

The Unusuals is the best show on TV. If ABC cancels this up and coming drama, then shame on them. It just keeps getting better and better!

  41. justin says:

But Bill u didnt awnser Brandy’s question why is Smantha Who? being renewed when it gets worse ratings. Also i am voting for Castle and the Unusuals but Castle would do better on a better time because stinking surviving suburbia is ruining it. Try moving Castle to a better time. Im cheerin on Castle to show u guys what they’re made of and then u will renew their show. Next year we will be all talking about how close it was from cancellation and how its going for a third.

  42. Stephen says:

I would love to think there is some sort of According to Jim scenario for Better Off Ted, but I think the show is just too quirky to catch on. I’ll enjoy the last episode tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed this gets released on DVD. It’s a great hidden gem but really never had a chance.

  43. Stephen says:

Oh an by didn’t have a chance I don’t fault ABC. They have actually been plugging the heck out of the thing. Again, it’s just not the kind of show I see catching on in a small number of episodes.

  44. Holly says:

There is no way Castle would get renewed based on a 2.0 in the demo. However, if, and that’s a big if, ABC hasn’t learned their lesson from Men in Trees and October Road and What About Brian and Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone and… whatever other low rated shows they’ve given renewals only to have them crash and burn in their short second seasons, and decide to renew one undeserving freshman hour-long, I think Castle has the edge. It’s doing better than Cupid and The Unusuals, and it has actually stopped dropping (well, mostly).

  45. Dan says:

Rob I agree that Better off Ted, despite the numbers has a slim chance to return. Apparently ABC has that show in consideration for renewal and I think the series should get another chance. According to Jim and Scrubs are dead, and I really hope ABC doesn’t renew Scrubs, please just end it already. Newcomers In the Motherhood and Cupid are dead, as is The Unusuals. Samantha Who?, Castle and Surviving Suburbia have a very good chance of returning with Suburbia and Castle in their current slots and Who moved somewhere else. Bill, Castle getting a 2.0 may mean cancel territory if they had a good year but with 5 other dramas already canceled and 2 freshman dramas on the bubble that puts Castle in a very good position to be renewed in my opinion.

  46. Mumbo says:

I think Suburbia, Castle, and Samantha Who? will all be renewed mainly because of how much carnage there is on ABC already. Adding Cupid, Ted, Motherhood, and The Unusuals, that’s 11 shows that ABC is taking the axe to already (unless Scrubs returns, which please God no).

Of those three, though, I think Suburbia is a lock, namely because it’s a half-hour sitcom. The minute it moves out from under DWTS it will crash and burn, but that hasn’t happened yet, so.

  47. RealityChick says:

In The Motherhood is an insult to mothers-get a CLUE ABC!!!

  48. S. says:

    @RealityChick
Motherhood is not an insult to mothers, it is a an attack on all unsuspecting TV viewers that might just zap through ABC and catch a glimpse of it. So is Suburbia. I never liked Sam Who?, but compared with those 2 shows, it actually is good. This should not be taken as a compliment considering how bad those 2 are.

Better off Ted, since they changed the focus from Ted to the rest of the characters, is a nice little show, and the only comedy on ABC that actually makes me laugh. It still is unbalanced, and the writers lack the guts to extent the all out craziness of the Veridian Dynamics adverts to the rest of the show, making it a tepid final product. Of ABC’s comedies it is the only one that has in it the potential of improving creatively.

  49. kermode says:

Of course Castle has gone down, because so has the episodes. It becomes dreary and irrelevant when they try to be a serious cop show and focus on the solving of crimes, they should stick to being funny – that works well, very well actually.

  50. evah says:

I want Castle to return for second season.

But gheesh!!!. why bother to watch any new scripted shows always thinking if it will hit the “on the bubble” list?
Nielsen ratings are out of date anyway.

  51. Jennifer says:

First, the Castle is not undeserving. It is a good show. Much better than some of the crap which is on right now. There are a lot of people that do like this show and I really do feel the Nielsen ratings need to be revised. It’s a shame that good shows get canceled because of it. There also is a “Save Castle Campaign” going on right now. Hopefully it helps convince ABC to give it more time.

  52. MichyGeary says:

Castle is absolutely worth a second season — and a third, a fourth, etc. At least give it a chance before you condemn it. It was given a shitty time spot and only ten short weeks to get anyone’s attention. Give it some space to grow, and it will flourish.

  53. shelly says:

My guess is that Castle will be back if, and only if, ABC finds a spot for it on its schedule next season. Much as I like (but not love) the show and want it to continue, I doubt it’ll keep its post-DWTS timeslot next season – ABC will probably want to use that timeslot to promote one of its new shows which means they could move Castle to another timeslot, if they can find one to put it in. Otherwise, it will probably mean a midseason return (best case scenario) or cancellation (worst case).

  54. Holly says:

Sigh..I said nothing about the quality of Castle (which, btw, I actually watch), only about it’s bad numbers. You can whine about Nielsens saying thy are outdated or whatever, but even if you were right, it wouldn’t change the fact that advertisers base their rates on those ratings.

  55. S. says:

Imagine that the families watch a certain show as colored balls in a opaque bag. Imagine that you have AI watching families are red balls, and Castle watching families are blue balls, in that bag. If you randomly pick a ball from the bag, you are more likely to get a red ball than a blue ball. You can’t fault Nielsen for not finding Castle, or any low ratted show, viewers if there aren’t more of those people to begin with.

  56. Kristen says:

I love Castle. Honestly I’ve never seen any of the other shows, but Castle is great.

  57. lulu says:

If Castle isn’t renewed i will be seriously miffed..it’s a GREAT show and deserves a chance, it gets stronger every week in my opinion.. and Fillion and Katic are to damn pretty to be cancelled!

  58. Dan says:

I still think Surviving Suburbia, Samantha Who?, Castle and Better off Ted will be back. The first 3 are definites to return while Ted is 50/50. ABC likes it enough to still have it on its schedule, even when it interfered with the presidential address. I just hope Scrubs doesn’t come back. It should end before the series really jumps the shark. Last year most of my guesses for renewal for ABC were right. I guessed that Cashmere Mafia, Womens Murder CLub, and Men in Trees would be axed while Eli Stone would be renewed. One guess was incorrect though I admit. I did guess that ABC would bring back Miss Guided, which was in consideration for renewal until the last minute.

  59. djm says:

ok.. i had to say this, but did all the chuck fans switch over to being castle fans?
is there gonna be a giant rung on espresso machines before the finale?
    [/crazyofftopic_garbage]
scrubs should die with a little dignity.

  60. Yvette says:

Castle is a must keep. Fun to watch, great chemistry among the cast, and a story line needing to be played out by Castle and Beckett. It’s the only show that stops my family in their tracks to sit and watch. Not to mention the talent of Nathan Fillion. Other broadcasters made the mistake of canceling a show he starred on before, and years later it still has a HUGE following. Let’s not make that mistake again!

  61. Melissa R. says:

All the shows I watch on ABC were given early renewal, so I’m thrilled.

  62. Kcat says:

Castle is extremely well done, intelligent, funny, and genuinely interesting! Why? Because Nathan Fillion is a brilliant actor. He is charming, charismatic, exceptionally smart, truly gifted, and oh yeah, incredibly hot, sexy, and gorgeous! ABC simply has to keep Castle going, as it is the one show that is the absolute best show on television!

  63. Stacey says:

U guys on ABC wrote up there that all the shows in orange except for Castle is being cancelled anyway so keep Castle make it ur ninth show and maybe switch the time slot they would do better if they didnt have a sucky time. A lot of people have jobs in the morning and a lot of people dont like staying up till 10. But a lot of people do stay up to watch Castle. Change the day, change the time anything Castle is a great show. GO CASTLE SHOW THEM UR WORTHY and if they dont want u CbS, fox, cw, nbc, will want u.

  64. Justin says:

U guys are being no fair to Castle though a lot of people has always watch CSI Miamai and it has a lot of seasons and u put Castle with the first season at the same time against CSI thats not fair to Castle. Also Surviving Suburbia has only had 4 episodes and it started after Castle u guys are rating Surviving Suburbia to early becasue people might hate the future episodes and love Castle.

  65. DJM: “did all the chuck fans switch over to being castle fans?”

No, I think all the Firefly fans did. Which would you prefer? LOL

  66. Dan says:

Here’s my percent take on the renewals…

    Samantha Who? 95%
    Surviving Suburbia 90%
    Castle 90%
    Better off Ted 50%
    The Unusuals 0%
    Cupid 0%
    In the Motherhood 0%

With Better off Ted, its half and half. The ratings are bad but its likeable enough for ABC to put the series in consideration since they are happy with how Scrubs has done. I seriously think Castle will be back because Since Leno is at 10, then ABC could definitely take advantage of airing Castle there next season. Its only conpetition would be CSI: Miami. So my final thought for the week is that 3 shows are definites to return, 3 shows are definites to be axed and 1 show is 50/50.

  67. Melaniee says:

Castle, Cupid & The Unusals are good to. I dont care what anyone else says, there are 100% worth watching.

  68. Kate says:

Castle is totally worth keeping! My new favourite show of the yr!
Fantastic actors, great story lines, funny and intelligent.
    KEEP CASTLE!

  69. Amber says:

Castle is an amazing show that should be renewed. End of story. :D

  70. Justin says:

Look and see ABC!!!! Look at all these people wanting Castle dont ruin there favorite show!!!

  71. Sylvia says:

If I had to pick one to save, it would have to be Castle I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I think the writing and the cast are unusually solid for a show in its freshman year. I’d love to see it make the cut.

  72. caroline says:

I’ll be really sad if they don’t renew Castle also. Mostly, I feel like networks are way too quick to cancel a show. If they’d give it more of a chance, it could build up a really good following.

Plus I’d watch Nathan Fillion read the phone book. I started watching the show just because he was in it, but I really do like it.

  73. Shannon says:

Out of those three shows, “Castle” would be the better choice for renewal. “Samantha Who” and “Surviving Suburbia” are just stupid, awful shows.

  74. shelly says:

tvguide.com’s list says Castle has a good chance, while Ausiello’s list at ew.com says it could go either way. Who to believe, who to believe…

One thing about Ausiello’s list that I don’t agree with at all though is that he says that Unusuals could also go either way. However good or bad Castle’s chances are, I’m sure after yesterday’s Unusuals ratings that Castle’s chances of being picked up are far better than Unusuals.

Since all the shows in Danger color are being cancelled EXCEPT FOR Castle u might as well keep Castle for a extra show to have. Castle is pretty good. Also, they might have better luck if u change their time slot!!!

  76. Dan says:

The thing is that ABC has had no new hit dramas this year and most of their sophomore bunch has failed, except Practice. Therefore ABC needs to save atleast 1 drama from this year. Cupid has done terrible consistently, The Unusuals have been dropping worse than Life on Mars,. Therefore Castle would be the best bet to bring back. Its demo sucks, but vhances are ABC is going to bring it back and try it out again on the same night next season. Since ABC has 6 returning dramas, 5 of which will be on the fall schedule, having a drama like Castle to fill extra holes wouldnt be too bad. As far as comedies are concerned, Suburbia is relatively cheap to produce plus with around 7 eps leftover, it would make sense for ABC to keep it. Samantha has extra episodes too so ABC may want to give it a third go around, maybe to pair it with another comedy. Ted is 50/50, like previous ABC shows. Not a definite for cancellation and not a renewal definite either. But ABC does like it, and its retention out of Scrubs so they could bring it back. It does have 6 episodes left so add another 13 and theres a second season right there.

Dan, it would not shock me if Castle was renewed. If I had to do the oddsmakers with Robert today, I’d give it 50%.

  78. Holly says:

Therefore ABC needs to save atleast 1 drama from this year.

Why? If they are all performing badly, why would they need to save any of them? They don’t really need to renew a low-rated show just to fill spots, they have plenty of pilots and a few “reality” shows that can be expanded to provide filler if/when thing fail.

  79. Dan says:

Holly, because while a lot are performing badly, maybe ABC wants to mask that by instead of axing every series, they save one that they think may actually have a chance or may do better next year. If networks have a bad year, usually they save atleast 1 drama, especially if they cancel a lot of dramas during that season. FOX did it last year with Terminator, ABC did it in 2005-2006 by saving What About Brian, and during that season they had a show in particular that did well (Commander-in-chief) but was axed. Its true ABC does have a lot of drama and reality pilots that they could use next season, but they figure growing a newer show couldnt hurt. Theres a chance that ABC may just axe every show from this year and start fresh like what CBS did last season, but ABC isnt doing nearly as well as CBS so its unlikely ABC would do that. I’m also looking at the pattern of ABC renewing moderately rated midseason dramas (What About Brian, October Road, Eli Stone) and then putting them on 10 mondays (Tuesday for Eli Stone because Boston Legal was moved to monday for its final season), where they would later fail.

DVD details for Samantha Who? season 2 have risen and apparently the DVD is 17 episodes, 20 episodes were filmed, 13 were aired , i guess ABC will air 4 more in the summer or they will be straight to DVD and the remaining 3 are season 3 if it were cancelled the season 2 DVD would be 20 episodes

  81. eiaboca says:

Congratulations, ABC, you are canceling every single show I watch on your network. I guess other than Lost, but that only has one more season, right? Then you will lose this 28 year old female with expendable income!

  82. Kate says:

PLEASE ABC KEEP CASTLE!!!!! Its the first show I have LOVED in so long!…so many friends of mine love it as well!!! I will never watch abc again if it is cancelled!!!

  83. Tina says:

I see the vote is strong for Castle on this board and I would have to agree. There is not a better show on the air at the moment. Nathan Fillion is amazing in his role, I do believe it is getting screwed with on the time slots. ABC stabilize the time, stop bouncing it around and give it a better time slot.

We are behind Nathan, just like Firefly you have a huge fan base.

  84. Taryn says:

ABC better keep Castle. It’s my new addiction. I think it would’ve done better if it still came on right after DWTS. Although I know DWTS goes off at 9:30 and you can’t start an hour long show at that time. Wish Castle had a better time slot. :(

  85. Dario says:

Better of Ted is the best sitcom this season! It has to be renewed!

  86. Susan says:

Castle is my fave show on ABC. It just keeps getting better and better week after week. I am so hopeful ABC will renew it; if you haven’t checked it out, please do! The chemistry between Nathan and Stana is off the charts, and the writing is superb. I love the relationship, too, between Castle and his daughter…you don’t see quality like this on TV that often anymore.

  87. ECHO says:

im upset about Eli Stone. that show was funny, trippy and charming. aslo LIFE ON MARS was one of the most creative new shows out there and my mom and i just loved it. the cast was incredible and i was looking forward to next season but i guess that’s out of the picture. BUMMER

  88. ann koeffler says:

I think that both Castle and the Unusuals are so superior to some of the other programs cited. I agree that ABC needs a new rating system or something!

  89. Justin says:

Bill Gorman, So last night was the 2nd to last epiosde of Castle’s 1st season did it get better ratings? Will it have a second season (everyone hopes so), even if it got the same ratings is ABC going to keep it because it is getting a lot of good views, rates, etc. Also I would say with u guys getting rid of a lot of shows this year to keep Castle u guys have extra space for ur time slots and Castle is doing better then the rest u guys are thinking about keeping (green, yellow and red)

  90. thedemonhog says:

The release of last night’s ratings has been delayed until tomorrow.

  91. Justin says:

Will Castle be renewed or cancelled?

  92. ms lady says:

they really have got to renew CASTLE, its an awesome show – if ABC lets it go, they are nuts! The UNUSUALS is actually getting better. the last two weeks were actually riveting. as for SURVIVING SUBURBIA, it was designed with cancellation in mind! SAMANTHA WHO? well what can I say Im over it! And I must say Im also over UGLY BETTY! sorry!

  93. Heather says:

I am looking forward to tonights episode of Castle. I think it is a great show and I hope they renew it. I do watch a lot of drama shows, but this one has just enough comedy to keep it different from the rest. Good luck Castle!

  94. Michele says:

CASTLE better not end for good. I have loved Castle ever since the first episode and have been a dedicate fan of the show. I love the plot line and the characters are interesting and i really think they have a good thing going. Plus, after viewing the last episode of the season…it would be cruel to leave everyone hanging and have questions never answered about Kate’s mother. I am looking forward to the next season. There better be a next season! :) I’ll vote a million times if i have to. =D
