Say Goodbye to Dollhouse

Posted on 08 May 2009 by Robert Seidman

dollhouse-wake…just in case.

It was fun while it lasted.  I wish Dollhouse had a good chance of being renewed, but it doesn’t.  There were several episodes I enjoyed quite a bit and I am looking forward to the season, and very probably series finale.  I’m not as certain about Dollhouse as I was, say NBC’s Life – another show I enjoyed that isn’t coming back.  I’m almost as sure, but I’ll cut the tiniest sliver of a chance because it’s on Fridays.

Given the ratings performance, being on Fridays gets its chances up to about .5%.  And because Eliza Dushku is growing on me and Dichen Lachman in the role of Sierra was great at nailing multiple personalities,  and Enver Gjokaj in the role of Victor was good at the multiple personalities too, I will say 2%.  I don’t really think it has any real shot at renewal, but the 2% is just to differentiate — however slim its chances are, they do seem a tiny bit better than the prospects for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

My bet is that neither come back, but Dollhouse has a slightly better chance.  Some people make a lot of noise over the percentage increases via DVR, but they don’t really boost the adults 18-49 rating enough to matter, and no matter how you slice it, it’s ratings decreased from the premiere.  It had seemed to level off in the 1.4-1.5 range live plus same day adults 18-49 rating, but then after a week off it returned last week with a 1.2 rating.  James Hibberd has a graph of the 18-49 performance and the trend is not Dollhouse’s friend.

Sure, if the finale pulls a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating in the overnights, I will revise my thinking, but that doesn’t seem realistic.   If it goes back to the 1.4-1.5 range, I don’t think its fate improves any.  Either way, we’ll hopefully see the numbers sometime Saturday morning.

I wonder what we’ll see there next fall — Til Death? New shows? 5th Grader/Don’t Forget combo?

  2. Jack says:

Why Would this show have a tiny bit better chance at renewel than TSCC? TSCC was at 1.3 for its final few weeks but this keeps going down.

  3. Jack says:

i too watched all the eps and 2 eps were ok. eps 6 and 8. but the rest were just horrible.

  4. thewbviewer says:

Goodbye dollhouse… great idea but not so good show.

  5. Jack, FOX produces the show, and Dollhouse got the “remote free” treatment, and there isn’t anything to suggest TSCC wouldn’t have fallen even further. The Dollhouse drop from 1.4 to 1.2 was after a week off the schedule — it had been in the 1.4-1.5 range steady for the four weeks before that. So I think its prospects are a tiny bit better. But we’re talking tiny…

  6. Dan says:

Jack, Terminator just kept dropping for 2 seasons. It did moderately well its first season, then did crap on mondays last fall and did even worse fridays, Terminator has no chance. Dollhouse would have a chance if FOX liked the series but at this point theres really no solid reason to bring Dollhouse back.

Anonymous, most likely we will see the Fifth Grader/Lyrics combo on fridays which performed the best in my opinion.

Both series (Terminator & Dollhouse) are gonna be axed.

  7. Chad says:

Wow, Robert agrees with me on Dichen, there’s hope for him yet. :-)

She really impressed me, way back from the pilot. It’s a shame she doesn’t have the name recognition like Dushku, because she’s no doubt the better actress between them.

TSCC’s only hope is if every new Fox pilot bombs, which they won’t. There’s very little room for either show, and the rest of the scripted programs are well above the cut.

Human Target, Maggie Grace (sp?), and Virtuality are likely. The last of which is given a bizarre July 4th premiere. (Or around the holiday.)

  8. Chad says:

OOps.. I got the actress name confused with the Fox show “Maggie Hill”. Sheesh… I was getting mixed up with the other hospital drama called “Mercy”.

    I’m really mangling stuff today.

  9. The_GodfatherSJP says:

More likely the finale will be another 1.2 or even lower. Here’s why:

    1) I’ve yet to see a Finale Episode on this site for seasons or series actually increase it’s viewership by an appreciable margin. I doubt Dollhouse is THAT different from other shows.
    2) I believe Star Trek will have a negative impact upon viewership this weekend. Yes, we didn’t see this with Wolverine last week, but the buzz and critical acclaim surrounding the two films is very different. Wolverine had a leaked work print and poor word of mouth both from online and from review sites. It’s the opposite for Star Trek. Star Trek also has the biggest SCI-FI fanbase in the world, a fanbase which doesn’t exist to the same degree as it does for the X-men movie franchise (I say movies because the comics are another matter)
    3) Prison Break is still airing in front of the show. FOX finally found something worse for a lead in, and Prison Break is it. I doubt Dollhouse will build well on a show that has been pulling 3.1 million with a 1.0 18-49 demo on average, especially since I doubt they share the same audience.

  10. JJ says:

TSCC obviously has a better chance, so here is yet another anti-TSCC OPINION piece that has no grounds in reality. Terminator got better ratings on Monday than Dollhouse ever did, FOX fridays have just gotten worse since TSCC finished its season, and Dollhouse is not part of a successful franchise either. Dollhouse also has a much smaller fanbase than TSCC and is overall just a much weaker show. For all the criticism you people direct at fanboys regarding their lack of a sense of reality, you are just as irrational in your dislike of TSCC.

  11. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Uh, Chad? Fox is going to broadcast Virtuality as a special on July 4th, specifically Saturday Night July 4th. That’s what networks do to pilots they don’t pick up, they broadcast them as summer Movies Of The Week. And it’s on the worst night possible in the summer too. You can scratch that off the list.

Your main point is still valid, but FOX isn’t going to pickup Virtuality.

  12. eric says:

Pretty misleading title for a news post imo…
If it’s not officially canceled, the post title shouldn’t imply that it is.

  13. JJ, it’s grounded in reality. You just don’t like our view of reality:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/05/06/theres-no-drama-at-all-in-foxs-renewal-announcements/

  14. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Uh, JJ, I’m another TSCC fan, and even I don’t think the chances of renewal are good. I think they’re better than Dollhouse’s, but they’re still poor. That’s about the only point I disagree on with this post.

(Waiting to get jumped by Trolls now…)

  15. ABCFanatic says:

    Goodbye Dollhouse

  16. Kozy says:

From the beginning I couldn’t understand why this show seemed so strange to me. Then I read an article by Alan Sepinwall, and he talked about the “ick” factor in the premise of the show, and that nailed it. “Dollhouse” is about sex slavery, and far worse, the victims don’t know they’re be brainwashed into it. Just because the show coat it with a layer of voodoo sci-fi mumbo jumbo schtick doesn’t negate that this show is about a few hapless souls being abused week in, week out.

  17. JJ, if you’ve been paying attention to ratings then you know that, comparably, TSCC’s ratings on Monday where just as bad for that day as they were on Fridays even with it’s lowered expectations (I’m not saying that it had the same ratings but rather that expectations are higher on Monday so it’s bad ratings there don’t help it any, even if they were a little higher than the Friday numbers).

Also, The Terminator franchise may be successful but the TSCC TV series is a bomb this season. You can thank the show runner for that.

  18. buffywrestling says:

@Kozy: I would like to live in your black & white world! Sounds very rigid and entirely unbendy.

  19. Fredo says:

I have to agree with JJ. TSCC is so much better than Dollhouse. I know it’s subjective but I got real board with Dollhouse after the first 3 episodes. I’d leave the episodes on my DVR for weeks and would finally erase them. TSCC on the other hand has maintained my attention and I am dying to see what happens to John if the viewing public happens to receive a miracle from Fox and they allow the story to continue.

  20. Tom says:

Kozy, the show doesn’t coat it at all, it practically bathes in the ugliness, which is part of the problem with the ratings (but the part of the appeal for myself and many others).

Hell, they’ll probably confirm tonight that Saunders is a doll, and “Whiskey” will never be given her life back. Add that Alpha apparently stole all the dolls’ personalities, and could thus “murder” them all, and there’s no grounds to say that the show coats over the ugliness.

That said, I’m predicting a 1.0 to 1.1 rating. There’s no reason to suspect a jump from the first half of the finale, especially with Star Trek and better weather this weekend vs. last. And yes, that will definitely kill any chance the show had for renewal.

  21. Brian D says:

I like TSCC better then Dollhouse but overall you just have to look at the numbers neither of these shows are coming back unless someone else picks them up and we all know chances of that are between very slim and none. I think the networks also have to use a little more reality when it comes to their Friday/Saturday expectations CBS is the only network I’ve seen do good on Friday’s in a while.

Also what’s up with that chick missing her arm in the pic. It’s kind of a little weird to look at.

  22. Brian D, What missing arm?

  23. Brian D says:

FYI also Dollhouse isn’t technically the finale tonight as there’s as episode 13 that’s going to remain unaired on TV but will be on the DVD. I find it somewhat ridiculous and won’t buy the DVD just to see the missing episode.

  24. I can see how it might look like Olivia Wlliams’ arm is missing, but it’s merely behind the casket…

  25. wiesengrund says:

This week has seen some weird online-hype about DOLLHOUSE, though. It was Twitter trending topic for some time (beating swine flu) and a DVD push brought it up to #4 in Amazons Sales Charts for Boxed Sets (still there as of now). (I know, FBC doesn’t care about the DVDs, but if 20th Century are right now adjusting their offer, this might factor into it.) This was the first week I’ve seen such a thing happen with Dollhouse. The finale was also sent out for reviews (I haven’t seen one mediocre or negative review yet, everyone seems to like it) and a press conference call with Alan Tudyk was held on Monday. There’s been some buzz. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it actually gains a little bit. Maybe a 1.2?

Anyway, the fact that FBC hasn’t made up their mind till now, although the numbers have been “soft” (Joss Whedon) all along, indicates to me that FBC are factoring in more information than just ratings. But since we don’t know what they’re looking for, it’s kinda difficult to speculate about it. I guess we’ll know on May 18th.

  26. The_GodfatherSJP says:

A 1.2 is still awful. In terms of information we’re not seeing, well, we don’t know production costs for one, nor FOX’s actual ratings expectiations prior to the premiere. It could be that they thought they’d renew if the show got a 1.5/1.6 average.

Now before being mauled by other commenters, I listed 1.5-1.6 as a possible average just to explain that we ourselves do not know the ratings that FOX would have found acceptable for Dollhouse on a Friday. It’s probably a lot higher, I just threw that number out there for example.

Actually, now that I think of it, the DVR numbers may be a factor as well. Not a big one, obviously, but it’s probably something FOX is considering. I know there was a 0.45-0.5 “bump” for Live + 7 over Live + SD from the previous DVR data. What’s Dollhouse’s latest DVR results now? Are they any different with Prison Break as a lead in?

  27. DS says:

“It was fun while it lasted.”

Not for me and 300 million others.

  28. wiesengrund says:

We have no DVR date since Prison Break took over as lead-in. The last Friday before that got a 1.9 in the demo (Live+7; seasonala average: 2.1). I think DVRs might only play a role, if FBC are thinking about moving it to a different night, gambling that the DVR-fans will switch to Live+SD on the new night.

  29. notty22 says:

Summer was probably headed to Dollhouse, oh well the Summer fanboys will have to just keep prayin to their shrines, anything Summer is in or near gets AXED. I don’t think the robo perverts would have liked Summer playing a real woman anyways, thats why most of the TSCC seemed not to like Dollhouse. The portrayal of a real stron sexy woman scares the hell out of those boys.

  30. Chris F says:

“@Kozy: I would like to live in your black & white world! Sounds very rigid and entirely unbendy.”

Just because it happens in the real world doesn’t mean that I want to watch a show about it every week. Even then, I think Kozy has a point in that the sci fi premise rather than helping to tell the story was a distraction as it made the most sympathetic characters in this bleak universe by and large devoid of personality. If the show was about the actual sex trade, it actually may have been easier to become emotionally invested in the characters. I have watched every episode of Dollhouse but I did it more out of loyalty to Joss Wheedon than any particular love or even like of the show.

  31. Jack says:

I hope TSCC is picked up. If just to piss of Tvbynumbers.com lol. it just feels like u guys are against the show.

  32. Chris F says:

Its numbers were terrible and the site is called Tvbynumbers.com. What exactly would you expect?

  33. Chris, maybe Jack will create a site called:

    tvbytheevenwhenthenumberstinkwewillstillloveyourshow.com

  34. Marco says:

    Virtuality is already gone.

    From a German site, http://serienfans.tv/news.php?serie=sarahconnor&id=1897

    Translation (English)

08.05.2009: Hope: FOX TERRIER rejects new SciFi series [rb]
New hope for “Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles”: FOX TERRIER rejected an order of the new Science Fiction series “Virtuality”. The persons responsible did not find the pilot film to the possible new series apparently as well enough. Now “Virtuality” shall be seen only as an Eventmovie.
“Virtuality” turns on a group of Astronauton which graduate from a ten-year-old flight through all to come to an entferneten star. Besides, 12 crew members are equipped with so-called Virtual Reality to the devices which provide aboard, in the end, for chaos.

The FOX TERRIER the pilot film no standard order allows to follow, can be looked as a good sign about “Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles”. Since “Virtuality” would have been in the genre of the Science Fiction a series with FOX TERRIER the ideal successor of the rates-weak Terminator series.
And like ” Terminator. The Sarah Connor Chronicles ” doer Josh Friedman reported, a lengthening of the series depends only on the fact how many new series FOX TERRIER will order. And with “Virtuality” there will be already once a new series less.
    To spring: Airlock alpha

  35. wiesengrund says:

Oh, how awesome to see Google translate “FOX” as “FOX TERRIER”! :)

  36. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Ummm, Marco, there are still 14 other shows that FOX has ordered pilots of (and these are the ones we know of). Partial list: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118000335.html
    The list:
    Hour long:
    1) Glee (guaranteed will appear in the Fall, pilot premieres in May)
    2) Maggie Hill
    3) Past Life
    4) Human Target
    5) Absolutely Fabulous
    6) Masterwork
    7) A Michael Strahan – starring Football drama (who’s name escapes me)
    8) Eva Adams
    Half hour long:
    1) Cleveland (35 episodes ordered already)
    2) The Station
    3) Walorsky
    4) Sons of Tucson
    5) Two Dollar Beer
    6) Last escapes me (These last 4 are single-cam half half hour comedies who didn’t look very good and they haven’t been heard of since the pilot order)

Now, you’re telling me that FOX is going to favor TSCC and/or Dollhouse over all of that? Not likely unless the pilots BOMB. Granted, there are a total of 4 hours of FOX programming available, 2 each in the Spring and Fall (4 for Spring if they don’t use Fridays as a Reality TV night), but that’s a pretty small window. I will admit that the last 2 hour long dramas look pretty poor on the face of it (as a matter of fact I’ve read a few articles saying Eva Adams was knocked by advertisers).

  37. The_GodfatherSJP says:

I don’t know WHY a smiley face appeared above, I wrote 8 and a parentheses.

  38. you have to write it 8.) (with the decimal point) or it will auto convert to a smiley wearing sunglasses.

  39. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Thanks. Too late to fix the dang post though. If you want I can look up the pilot lists for the other networks as well. Might be something you could use for the intervening period before network upfronts. Just saying.

  40. Andrea says:

Marco, that translation is almost unreadable, lol.

  41. Andrea says:

    Godfather,

When Deadlinehollywood.com posted that list, you could almost hear crickets. Not a good sign for FOX with its new slate of pilots.

  42. Gusar says:

Aegh, you did it AGAIN!! Posted a title that made my heart stop. Because I thought you have an official announcement. Don’t use misleading titles! Use a title like that ONLY when you have something official!

I know the chances for this show are extremely small, but that doesn’t make the title any less misleading.

  43. Gusar says:

notty22, ever heard of a thing called “projection”?

Jeez… I know I shouldn’t feed the trolls, especially not *this* troll… But this guy is so into this stuff that “he doth protest too much” fully applies to him.

  44. Brian D says:

I don’t see how that article equates to good news for TSCC. Let’s be realistic SciFi hasn’t really been in lately when it comes to TV unless the show’s on cable with the exception of a show here and there. Virtuality seems like a better fit for the SciFi channel then for Fox.

  45. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Andrea, I just checked the blog you referenced. According to this website:
    1) Glee is a lock (already said that)
    2) Human Target is very well liked
    3) Sons of Tucson is also well liked
    4) Maggie Hill and Past Life are “so-so”
    5) Masterwork is…just now being filmed?! How the hell is that going to be picked up in time for the schedule? It says mid-season replacement. I assume then that it won’t be in the Fall and will only be a candidate for Spring if it’s good?
    6) Brothers: the Strahan show. Getting some “buzz,” wonder what that means.
    7) Cop House (one off the list I gave) is now getting bad reviews.
    8) Absolutely Fabulous was good and now FOX has cooled on it
    9) Eva Adams is dead.

So that’s 3 shows which appear set to show up (Glee, Human Target, Sons of Tucson), 2 of which are hour long (Tucson is a single-cam comedy, therefore half hour). That leaves 2 hours of scheduling time for FOX, or 6 if Fridays are opened up again. 1 hour will be for Glee in the Fall, according to this article Human Target will also be paired with another new pilot show, so presumably either Maggie Hill or Past Life gets that slot in the Fall, unless of course both shows are ultimately canned (a possibility, since the network has cooled on Maggie Hill). That leaves just one hour for a show in the Spring.

  46. The_GodfatherSJP says:

DOH! Did the thing with the 8 and parenthesis again.

  47. Christopher says:

Maybe we can holdout that Fox picks it up as a summer series? :)

  48. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm, no Chris. FOX only puts Reality TV on in the summer. Unless they were to radically change their programming philosophy, and if they did, we wouldn’t see Dollhouse or TSCC until NEXT summer.

  49. Andrea says:

Godfather, I meant there were only five comments to the news–and one of the comments makes that point, lol.

  50. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Andrea, oh you meant FOX got a posting about their new slate and no one commented. I see.

No offense, but I think FOX would be much more concerned about how critics responded rather than Web commenters.

  51. Andrea says:

    GF,

FOX would probably love both, but if given the choice, it’s the potential audience. Not a good early sign when there only 5 comments, as opposed to 21 for ABC, 25 for ABC and 42! for CW…

  52. Andrea says:

That should read 25 for CBS…

  53. I just walked into the living room, and all of a sudden there was this giant kind of silvery ball that appeared in the center of the room, with sparks flying out of it and stuff. Then the sparks disappeared, leaving a blackened charred circle of carpet, ringed with embers, and, right in the middle, a bundle of papers, the front cover of which is labeled

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Season Three.

    By Josh Friedman. 05.08.2011

Anyway, here’s the first page of the first episode.

SCENE: JOHN is in a burned-out building in the future. All of a sudden there’s a big ball of sparks, yada yada yada, and CAMERON appears inside.

    JOHN
    Cameron!

    CAMERON
John. I have some bad news.

    JOHN
    What? Why are you here?

    CAMERON
To warn you John. I’m afraid Sarah Connor was terminated. By a rogue TV network called “Fox”

    JOHN
Is there no way to bring Sarah Connor back?

    CAMERON
I’m afraid not. You see, Fox has to make way for brand new shows like:
    Glee
    Maggie Hill
    Past Life
    Human Target
    Absolutely Fabulous
    Masterwork
    A Michael Strahan
    Eva Adams
    The Station
    Walorsky
    Sons of Tucson
    Two Dollar Beer,
    and Cleveland.

    JOHN
Surely there’s some chance to save my mother?

    CAMERON
Well, I guess if ALL those shows go down the tubes, we might have a shot…

  54. puredieselbc says:

“there was this giant kind of silvery ball that appeared in the center of the room, with sparks flying out of it and stuff.”

Did you watch Smallville last night?

  55. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Oh, I see. But do you really think they’ll notice something about this website getting only 5 comments? One would think they’d be much more affected by audience screenings (which I assume is what killed some of the shows they were high on).

Usually it’s a bad sign when a network goes cold on a pilot they previously liked, such as Absolutely Famous, yes? Is that a fair assumption?

  56. P@ says:

No!! Fox can’t cancel Dollhouse! That would mean that Joss’ Biggest Fan won’t post anymore! His (her?) posts are always hilarious.

  57. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Squiggleslash, thank you for the Family Guy reference, however irrelevant.

  58. Andrea says:

GF, I doubt the execs will notice–I think they are pretty clueless about shows anyway. If this wasn’t true, how did “comedies” like Do Not Disturb and Sit Down, Shut Up get through?

I think a lot of the “insider” comments on the shows you mentioned came from the execs themselves after screening the shows themselves. They then determine if a pilot is “hot” or not.

What’s really interesting is to review these comments after the shows that are picked up, premiere… Often what was “hot” is trashed by critics and or ignored by the audience and dumped like a hot potato.

For a laugh, let’s take a look at the pilot season of 2007-2008:

    http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/primetime-pilot-panic-handicapping/#more-2122

On the other hand, you’re right about if a network doesn’t like a pilot right off (AbFAb) it’s good a dead.

  59. Andrea says:

“On the other hand, you’re right about if a network doesn’t like a pilot right off (AbFAb) it’s good a dead.”

I should correct and say, “almost as good as dead.”

On that list, “Twilight” was on the cold list, and it became “Moonlight”.

  60. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Well, she got ABC, CW and NBC largely correct, but CBS and FOX were WAY off. Guess it depends upon her sources.

  61. Tim says:

First: I hate tvbythenumbers. Why? Because last months always read here: TSCC cancel, cancel, cancel.
Ok, the numbers was really crap. So? I understand, maybe it’s gone. But why do this? The people like something and They always read what like it’s gone, and they have to say goodbye…
I hate tvbythenumbers because it’s crap. Why? We had last TSCC episode. What did you read? “Say goodbye TSSC”… I was really angry. It was last chance for me and I didn’t enjoy the last episode because I read “say goodbye” post.
Second: I hate Dollhouse. I think it’s piece of sh*t. This is my opinion, but some people think it’s a great show. They want to enjoy the season (maybe series) finale, and what they have to read?
Third: Ok, numbers are numbers. I understand. Ok, Dollhouse & Terminator had bad, really bad numbers. Maybe Fox won’t pick up Dollhouse and Terminator. what about Chuck? Chuck had bad numbers, Chuck is bubble show like Dollhouse and Terminator. Monday: watch chuck, watch, watch, watch. Thursday-Friday-Saturday: Terminator & Dollhouse cancel, cancel, cancel, cancel…
Ok, we are people, like something, watch something. I understand. But it’s really bad, because The numbers here not just numbers. Tvbythenumbers hate Terminator & Dollhouse and like Chuck (like me). But it’s wrong. The fans’s heart bleading…

    This is my opinion…

  62. I agree that Dichen and Enver were very good when playing Dolls with personalities. Enver even did good playing a Doll without one, which Eliza was usually bad at. I think Eliza was OK when she had a personality to work with.

I’ll miss Olivia more than anybody else, however. That icy Brit accent is paradoxically hot.

“And like…doer Josh Friedman reported, a lengthening of the series depends only on the fact how many new series FOX will order”

That’s Friedman BSing everybody again. Man has zero shame about his BS.

Tim: It’s called appropriate news of the day for those who didn’t know or who are in denial – like ninety percent of TSCC and Dollhouse fans. The show is on tonight, and then it’s done for – unless Nick C is right and Remote Free can save it, which even he doubts.

And Chuck’s numbers wouldn’t be bad enough to cancel if it weren’t for Leno, as this site has said repeatedly. Chuck is nothing like TSCC and Dollhouse.

Squiggleslash: Your plot is about as good as the TSCC series finale. You should ask Friedman to let you write season 3.

Notty22: Apparently you’re not familiar with Lena Headey, who kicked ass (when she wasn’t being sullen, bitchy, withdrawn, paranoid or hallucinating) on TSCC. Summer also kicked ass in Serenity (when she wasn’t crying, withdrawn, or hallucinating). Strong female characters aren’t a problem for us “robo-pervs”. Go back to trolling over at the wiki.

  63. maz says:

Well, that’s gonna be a sad day if both shows get cancelled on the 18th, I like both of them, so even if one is renewed i’ll be quite happy

  64. Chad says:

“(when she wasn’t being sullen, bitchy, withdrawn, paranoid or hallucinating)”

When was that? I may have caught a moment during “punch buggy”, Sarah may have even smiled. Lena is gorgeous, however Sarah is just depressing and the part was miscast.

I generally enjoy women warriors, I grew up watching Xena, then later became a Buffy fan. I just don’t find Eliza that great an actress, or the show above mediocre. I’m not going to admit how many foreign action flicks I own that feature the same theme, the latest being Chocolate.

  65. The part wasn’t “miscast” – Lena was brilliant as Sarah in terms of her acting. The problem is Friedman and the writers wanted Sarah to be a basket case.

She rarely smiled and when she did it was usually pretty wan. She was hallucinating one week and fine the next – real consistency there, writers. She was bitchy to Cameron to the point where even her fans called her a bitch one week. She was sullen and withdrawn when John or Derek criticized her obsession with the “three dots” – which, except for the stupid three red dots on the Turk, was never explained at all except as her own paranoia.

This crap went on all season. It was like taking Linda Hamilton’s part where she was growling at Dyson for being a bad guy for inventing Skynet and expanding it to 22 hours. No wonder viewers left in droves. Or taking the deleted scene from T-2 where Sarah is visited by Kyle Reese in her dreams and expanding it to 22 hours.

There were flashes of a better Sarah. Her being smart enough to spot Cromartie’s con with the bomb – if not his overall plan – was well written. Her tracking down the factory was smart – except she was stupid to go in alone – and then do it AGAIN and get caught by the SAME GUY two episodes later. The Sarah in season one was much better than season two.

I don’t mind a serious, paranoid, angst-ridden Sarah – done in moderation. It’s part of her character. As long as she is smart and competent, it’s OK. But THIS Sarah made nothing but one mistake after another all season until she was a bigger threat to John than a glitched Cameron! She almost got him or herself killed a half dozen times just being stupid.

All season long I was waiting for Cameron to bitch-slap both Sarah and Derek – and maybe even John. If Friedman had done that, the show might still have some life in it. Instead, Friedman has Cameron put a bomb in her head – which then isn’t even used – it was just another Friedman con. Pathetic.

  66. kermode says:

Enver Gjokaj is really good, and Dichen Lachman probably has potential. Dushku should settle for a job behind the camera.

  67. JJ says:

Hack, I was def. disappointed with the bomb thing too. They could have gone somewhere meaningful with that but then didn’t.

However, I would still kill for another season.

  68. Jeff says:

TSCC had a large boost in it’s first season ratings because it was one of the few scripted shows with fresh episodes during the Jan/Feb segment of the writer’s strike. I stopped watching this season because it was just sooo boring. I gave Dollhouse a chance out of respect for Joss and it HAS grown on me. I hope it gets renewed! Dichen is awesome, and I also agree about Enver.

  69. Nick C says:

The fate of the show revolves around tonight. I’d say if it can pull a 1.4 we’ve got some arguing going on to keep it around while they keep testing REMOTE FREE TV.

If it pulls a 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2 pigs would have to fly.

  70. Dustin says:

My name is Dustin; here is something you might want to know . . .

I am a Chuck fan who also likes T:SCC. If Dollhouse is cancelled and Terminator is renewed, fans of both Chuck and Dollhouse may want to consider watching T:SCC on a third season.

  71. ryan says:

i freakin love this show, with every episode it got better, i hope it gets renewed

  72. clutz says:

I will be shocked and stunned if Dollhouse can pull a 1.4 in the demo. My guess is we’ll see a 1.2 in the demo.

  73. Nick C says:

    clutz, I’m guessing 1.0 or 1.1.

  74. MNIS says:

damn that was a great finale

    sad to see it go…………………

  75. Remi says:

Great finale? Ballard will work for the Dollhouse now?! And the fact that Caroline wasn’t given her body back after all that was such a middle finger to viewers. This show has no potential to attract viewers, last week’s episode was far better than this one.

  76. Jeff says:

OK finale over and, despite the over use of Alpha, I definitely want to see more of these characters. Amy Acker’s ‘Whiskey’ was depressing and filled with potential. Not to mention Viktor (Victor?) Please renew Dollhouse, Fox!

  77. That was an awesome episode. I kinda wish it had been awful, so I wouldn’t feel so bad about it likely being cancelled.

  78. puredieselbc says:

“Great finale? Ballard will work for the Dollhouse now?! And the fact that Caroline wasn’t given her body back after all that was such a middle finger to viewers.”

To be fair Remi, it’s not like Fox went to the writers and said “Alright, it’s over, so tie up any loose ends.”

  79. Mel says:

    @Tim:

Seriously. This is *not* a fan site. If you don’t like knowing the numbers of your favorite show, or don’t like what Robert and Bill write ( on *their* site, I might add) then all I can tell you is: DON’T come to this site. Period.

If you want fans spinning delusions about the life of their favorite show that’s on the bubble, go to a local fandom site.

Don’t blame the site runners for your show’s horrible ratings. Be realistic.

  80. Chad says:

You can’t really continue the series with Echo as a normal person, a college grad and political activist wouldn’t stick around working for the Dollhouse. Ballard does get to watch over his obsession (Caroline), as he works towards freeing them all.

    Not a bad ending, imo.

  81. Charles says:

    That was a good finale
truth be told if the show was the end i would be fine with it!
the episode resolved alot of things.

  82. Buddy says:

Dollhouse had an OK finale. Perhaps season two could have turned it into something great (like with Buffy) but I don’t think we’ll ever know.

Meanwhile, what’s with the rumor that the post-series “14th episode” of internet gossip fame could become a series in its own right? What network wants to spin-off a flop? Only in Whedon-ville. You’ve got to love Joss.

  83. Joshua K. says:

That was a killer finale. The sad thing is that if it gets canceled, it’s got too many open ends for a nice 2-hour movie to wrap it all up (a la “Firefly”’s Serenity). In a happy world, they’d pick up a half-season and air it after my other obsession from this season: Fringe. In a PERFECT world, they’d just renew it for a full season. In the real world, I’m just getting Fringe…

  84. Chris F. says:

After finishing the finale, I felt like I had watched a 13 hour pilot episode. It is kind of sad that it took all season to come up with a show that was enjoyable to watch. Joss really needed to have Alpha far earlier in the season. The show works when the most evil thing in the universe is not the organization that all but one of the main characters works for.

  85. I’m downloading it now. I’ll let you know my opinion later.

But I gotta say, Ballard ending up working for them is gonna be a head-splitter. I’ll have to think about it when I see how they do it.

I’ve been having problems with ex-cop Boyd working for them. Now they’re recruiting FBI agents? OK, ex-FBI agents, or suspended or whatever he is.

This is getting to be like Fringe, where half the FBI agents so far appear to be working for the terrorists. LOL! First they had John Scott, then that other guy, and this week it was Harris. The only honest FBI agents left are Francis and Dunham – and I suppose we’ll have to get suspicious of Francis next.

  86. zs93 says:

Ebben a pillanatban még nincs cancel.

  87. Rei says:

To whom is repeating that this is not a fansite, it’s about numbers and bla bla bla, I just want you to remember that this is a fansite after all. You’re claiming this is not while you’re supporting heavily for Chuck. This is sick and far from honest.

    So long.

  88. Paul says:

At the moment i’m saying the show should be cancelled, i’m not from the usa so i watch it online, i’ve reached the beginning of episode 6 and then stopped, it’s too dull. Episode 5 was so boring, the best episode is Gray Hour, the one with the vault, the dialogue was good but the show is boring, the Same goes for TSCC, i never watched after it switched to Fridays, Prison Break isn’t any better, the only reason i watch now is cos i know the finale is just around the corner. If Dollhouse gets renewed then i’ll definetly force myself through it but it’s such an original show yet very strange. TBH all of the friday shows are boring, i wish Chuck and Lost would be on fridays, even reruns would entertain me more.

  89. Ok, just finished watching the finale. It was very good, easily the best episode of the series. Echo with 38 personalities is much more interesting than either Echo as a Doll or Caroline.

The only part I’m not entirely clear about is why Alpha didn’t simply shoot Echo when he had the gun rather than running from her. Aside from that, most things were cleared up – except for the basic issue of why the Dolls occasionally “go bad” (to use the Terminator phrase for reprogrammed Terminators who revert). It’s clear Echo is still reverting since she said “Caroline” as she went to sleep, not to mention patting Topher (what was that about?).

Also, Ballard isn’t actually working for them, he’s merely made a deal to free “Mellie” in exchange for tracking down Alpha. Since Mark Shepherd blew him off, I guess he feels he has no other option but to continue to function alone. I did think that scene was pretty lame, however. You would have thought Shepherd’s character would have at least wanted a look at Ballard’s Dollhouse. But maybe Ballard figured he would be too egotistical to do so.

It isn’t clear to me where they can take the show from there, other than more of the same. There’s no sign of the overall story arc preceding from the finale. Although Joss Whedon said he didn’t mind burning off his ammo early on since the premise was so rich he could “always reload”. So I suspect he doesn’t have any idea when a season two would go.

One obvious approach would be to concentrate on the corporate motivations of developing this technology and the Dollhouses elsewhere in the world as a conspiracy, as well as continuing the hunt for Alpha. It would be interesting to see if they could do any further character exploration or development of the main characters.

Well, we’ll see tomorrow hopefully whether the finale did decently in the demo. If not, a season 2 is highly unlikely anyway.

In any event, it was nice seeing Eliza in her cleavage and Amy Adams without scars for a change. Dichen had the best lines, though.

  90. Grr_argh says:

    @Richard
“It isn’t clear to me where they can take the show from there, other than more of the same.”

maybe it’ll be clearer when we get the chance to see the real post-apocalyptic finale that won’t be aired. I’m sure it would’ve set up season 2 nicely.

  91. Adam says:

I fell inlove with Dollhouse ! I really hope it comes back :(

  92. I don’t know, Grr_argh – I can’t figure out how a “post-apocalyptic” episode is supposed to fit in with where they left off. I got the impression it was set completely outside the story arc so far.

  93. “It isn’t clear to me where they can take the show from there, other than more of the same.”

Which “same”? The season started with a woman who appeared to be waking up and wanting to escape from the Dollhouse, midway through she became someone whose newfound sentience was sympathetic and protective of the Dollhouse, and has now, at the end, had the effect of a massive number of simultaneous personality imprints whose consequences have yet to be explored.

I think Whedon has enough talent, and has demonstrated it in this season, to move the show in all kinds of directions. Supposedly the story arc for several years was planned well in advance too, I don’t think we’ve seen anything other than the tip of the iceberg as far as where the show goes.

(And yeah, I’m depressed about that, given the likely low audience figures and thus high cancellation prospects.)

  95. Moose says:

I have watched every episode of Dollhouse. I forced myself to watch it every week, just hoping it would get better. It hasn’t. It is one boring show.

If this wasn’t a Whedon show, would people be so passionate in wanting it to return? I don’t think so.

  96. JS says:

I’m surprised Joss has not decided to try cable, his ideas would probably work better there. But still, Dollhouse and his other show still have not matched Buffy & Angel. Perhaps he peaked too early? He needs an original idea…at this point he is certainly not in the Alan Ball league.

  97. Maz says:

I think the show was smart, and stimulating, the kind that make you think about it after you watched it, and that is quite enjoyable.

The idea was great and had great potential, it was maybe not done in the best way possible, but had it been perfect, it would still be a hard one to sell to the audience, people like to relax watching TV.

Whatever the issue, it’s nice of Fox to have taken the risk to air it, it was not an easy one

I hope it gets a second shot, even a sort of deus ex machine would fit, or along with TSCC, i’ll be mourning two nice shows in 9 days

  98. andywhitto says:

I think Dollhouse is good, but i dont see why that should get picked-up and not TSCC. Yes Dollhouse has potential to be a great show, but you can say that about alot of other shows, the finale of TSCC proves that this story can change/evolve to continue to be fresh and exciting!

I think that Joss should take his projects to cable networks, the fact that he hasnt done so already given his bad history with FOX shuggests he just wants his shows to have larger audiences/budgets and will compromise his show to do so.

  99. Lisa says:

Eliza Dushku, still best known for playing Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, has signed a development deal with Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox Television, apparently willing to forgive the ratings failure that was Tru Calling. The pact, announced by The Hollywood Reporter this morning, should see Eliza Dushku take home mid- to high-six figures from Fox and the network and studio will develop projects for the star. Eliza Dushku will also be offered several existing pitches and scripts, trying to find a project that fits well for the actress that most Buffy fans thought would be a star by now.

Peter Liguori, the chairman of Fox Entertainment, thinks Eliza Dushku still will be a star. Liguori told THR, “This is a business of instincts, and she’s proved she can do it in two projects for us.”

The two projects with Eliza Dushku that Liguori refers to are Tru Calling and a pilot that was in development last season called Nurses, which Dushku stepped in and tried to keep afloat after it changed creative direction. Both of those projects happened before Kevin Reilly stepped in as the new Fox entertainment president, but he’s very much behind the new deal with Eliza Dushku, according to Liguori, who told THR, “Kevin and I think she’s awesome. She’s absolutely charismatic onscreen; she is riveting, she is fresh, she is smart, (and) she is unbelievably feminine while also having that toughness to her. She’s a TV star, but most definitely we know she’s a Fox star.”

The chairman of 20th Century TV, Dana Walden, told THR that Eliza Dushku was at the top of the list of the actresses that they wanted a development deal with. Walden told THR, “First and foremost, she is a remarkably beautiful person inside and out. She is smart and thoughtful, there is soulfulness to her that shines from a mile away, and she is a pleasure to work with. She is also tremendously versatile – she has a great comedic talent and can handle deeply emotional material.” this article is about 2 years ago.
They REALLY want Eliza Dushku to work on some Fox’s project. They love her. a phisical love. they would do everything to keep her on fox. the deal is over in july. the only way they may keep eliza is renuwing dollhouse and let her to sign an other deal. i dont understand ‘nielsen’ ‘rating’ ’share’. but i know dollhouse is a good show, with good actors and plotline. it’s enough to renew a show for a second season, isnt it?

  100. idizzle says:

Where does this idea that Dollhouse is super smart and hard to follow come from anyway? I watched the latest two episodes only because Alan Tudyk was in them and I got it just fine, thank you, even though I had previously abandoned this thing after the second episode. It’s not rocket science or advanced math or even Twin Peaks.

  101. Remi says:

    I’m with idizzle.

  102. Dave says:

I know just how the post-apocalyptic finale could lead into a spinoff:

The survivors of humanity leave in a fleet of spaceships for a distant solar system with terraformable planets. They mournfully call their old home “Earth-That-Was”.

A scientist working for the newly formed Chinese American Alliance finds a damaged Dollhouse imprinter and decides to reverse engineer it, then begins looking through school rosters for suitable test subjects.

  103. Dario says:

    Friday ratings please!!!!

  104. kasper says:

that was an awesome finale, i really really really hope fox picks up dollhouse, and if they do they should put it on mon nights at 8, like how prisonbreak used to be.

  105. Maz says:

Well idizzle, I get your point, I’m saying smart, not nobel-prize smart, just a little something that makes you think while watching, after watching, not purely action packed or drama packed, but that makes you wonder as the show darkens on the immorality

The actives’ jobs go deeper as the season progresses, from “simple” escorts or thieves jobs, we enter a deeper mystic realm with resurrection, morality, the human soul, and the action is there too, it was a good show if you ask me (which you don’t :p), from an intellectual and artistic point of vue, i’d renew it but i’m in no position to tell anything, and the numbers have been utterly catastrophic

This of course applies to TSCC as well, what a great show

  106. ^Dollhouse is done at FOX.

  107. Argus says:

I’m surprised that no one has commented on Dushku’s continued poor acting. At the end of this show my biggest feelings were A) Was that a season long pilot episode?
    B) The editing job was poor. But most of all – C) This show has the potential to be amazing if Dushku was not in it, or was not the focus point of it. I truly think Whedon shines when he emphasizes the team more than the individual. This is why I think that Angel was a vastly superior show to Buffy. On top of that, Dushku can’t act, or at least her skills appear small when compared to the huge performances given by people like Dichen, Tudyk, and Amy Acker, (the actors whop play Topher and Victor also do a really good job.)

  108. Lisa says:

”I think that Angel was a vastly superior show to Buffy”
did you drink vodka before to post? what the hell are you saying? buffy was gold, angel was silver, firefly .. bhè, never watched it. but any person i know loved buffy more than angel. did you comnpare the vampire slayer to angelus?? this is insane. angel was just ok, buffy was awesome!
