Castle renewed, Scrubs too

Posted on 15 May 2009 by Robert Seidman

castle

While only a month ago, this would’ve surprised us, given the last few weeks we are not surprised to hear that Castle has been renewed.

We are still in shock over Dollhouse, that Castle has us feeling, “Yeah, so, who didn’t see that coming?”  We’re not surprised, and compared to Dollhouse, Castle’s renewal seemed certain at this point!

What next, Privileged?

Well, there is Scrubs, but once we saw  yesterday that the primary cast had signed on for 6 episodes, that seemed like a a certainty too.

  1. Chad says:

The primary cast including Braff? I also thought it was going to become a spinoff with the new interns.

  2. Well, that’s nice. Maybe I should check out Castle, since I find Stana Katic kind of interesting. Saw her in “Spirit” and “Quantum of Solace” (she was the Canadian agent at the very end, a small role, but she looked fabulous.)

And of course Nathan is a character in anything he plays.

I’m not a procedural person, except for Leverage, but maybe I should check Castle out.

  3. j says:

Hmm…Scrubs ended pretty much perfectly (as in, the series finale), after multiple seasons that didn’t live up to the first few. But are they seriously thinking about bringing back Turk without Carla? Erm.

The show still should have ended years ago. And I’m not sure who can really take up the mantle of quirkiness JD has that is so important to the show. Given, I only saw the finale this season so maybe there are super brilliant characters created this season.

I suppose ABC is really trying to prepare for the loss of Lost. And they’re still trying to have at least one non-complete-failure comedy.

  4. Great news about Castle. I thought it would be renewed, but rarely does a network’s plans jive with my tastes. lol

  5. andywhitto says:

    Is this a joke ?

    Scrubs was renewed ?

I know i keep going on, but why is TSCC not being renewed lol, people act like it was totally crap, it was far from it !!

With this and the end of BSG, bad times!

I guess Dexter/True Blood/Stargate Universe (hopefull)/Lost (ending after 1 season :( ) will have to keep me going.

O i just forgot about Caprica ! :D little happier now lol.

Also, im starting to get into Chuck, so im guessing thats going to be renewed and hopefully will start to really like that.

  6. FrankJ says:

Castle is a pretty good show. The mystery quality varies, but Fillion and Katic have some good chemistry, always makes it an entertaining hour. Glad to see it picked up in the ratings enough to get renewed.

  7. j says:

I just realized this would put Scrubs at just one less season than Friends. And one more than Will and Grace. Odd for a show that’s struggled in so much of its run.

  8. Chief says:

Um….where does it mention Scrubs in that article?

  9. MichyGeary says:

    YESSSSSSS!! Huge score! Thank you!!

  10. AO says:

I’ve expected Castle to return, but it’s great to see it confirmed!

Hurray for Castle and Dollhouse. Go Chuck!

  11. Tiffany says:

Castle is the best so I’m very excited at this :D

  12. thatdude says:

That’s great news. It’s one of my new favorites. Castle is just a fun show to watch. It doesn’t even matter what the case or the crimes are, they are secondary. It’s just fun to watch the interactions of the characters.

  13. DavidRM says:

ABC made the right call! Castle is THE best show on tv right now! Nathan Fillion is a genius actor and Stana Katic is too sexy for words!

  14. Douglas says:

I like that Dollhouse and Scrubs is getting renewed. I think Scrubs would’ve been great leaving off with the new interns since the new interns are funny. I’m still waiting on news about Chuck since that is my favorite show.

  15. Nanci says:

Congratulations to Castle and all of us who bombarded ABC with emails and calls. At least there is one good show we can watch.

  16. Nick C says:

Nathan Fillion is a good guy even he likes to wear leather kilts… I’m happy it got renewed for him.

  17. Nick C says:

All we need now is PRIVILEGED, KNIGHT RIDER, and THE UNUSUALS to be renewed. Then Robert and Bill will be really, really, really, really, really happy.

  18. Dan says:

No surprise. I called this back when Castle first premiered. I knew it would get renewed and everyone else voted for cancellation. Castle follows in the foot steps of Eli Stone, October Road, and What About Brian, as the sole midseason replacement drama to be renewed for a second year. If the pattern continues then Castle will be in the same slot as this year where it will likely be cancelled afterwards.

  19. Dan says:

As for Scrubs, I knew it would be renewed but I’m kind of pissed that it is. ABC should just make a spinoff but the series isn’t Scrubs without Zach Braff.

  20. Jimmy says:

I glad to hear about Castle. It’s started off a little wobbly but really grew on me as we got to the end. Maybe a second season will offer better writing now that these characters will have a chance to grow and develop.

  21. Petrie says:

I love Scrubs and it ended wonderfully. Sometimes things should just go out on top.

  22. Lizardman says:

This is great news. With The Dollhouse, Castle, and the news that Reaper may make it to syndication I am only waiting on Chuck which I must say I am pretty positive will be back.
    Lizard

  23. HeroesforGhosts says:

Scrubs ended perfectly, just let it die.

  24. marenamoo says:

Tell me really – with all of these out there renewals coming through – why have they not announced Chuck which seems tame now in comparison to Dollhouse? What does it serve them at this point to hold the announcement – are they planning something special or are just mistiming the release and allowing the excitement over other shows overshadow Chuck.

  25. MC says:

Scrubs, Dollhouse and Castle all returning next year? Awesome! Now just give me my freaking Chuck renewal and all will be right with the world!

  26. ST says:

I like me some Scrubs, but it just feels weird to have it go on without focusing on JD. Push it as a spin-off or something, maybe; it won’t be a ninth season for me.

I’m glad that Castle’s coming back. Pretty light fare, but I love Fillion’s snark, and Stana Katic’s definitely easy on the eyes. She’s gotten better as Castle’s foil, too, after she pulled out the stick up her tush from the first couple eps.

  27. Julia says:

Push it as a spin-off or something, maybe; it won’t be a ninth season for me.

But then ABC can’t sell it for $1 mil an episode in syndication, which defeats the purpose of bringing it back.

  28. Melissa R. says:

What the hell? I don’t watch Castle, but I can understand it’s renewal, but Dollhouse is just bizarre, and I’m surprised by Scrubs.

  29. Susan says:

another surprise – Better off Ted also renewed!

  30. shelly says:

I’d think this was all a dream, but I just pinched myself and it hurt.

Maybe a Kings renewal is next? ;)

Richard Steven Hack, being that Castle is the only midseason show that has managed the huge feat of actually entertaining me, I say check it out. Nathan Fillion is absolute gold on the show.

  31. Christopher says:

    Sam who i want back

  32. Kristen says:

    Yay Castle!

  33. lost fan says:

I’ve read that Flash Forward(which stars Penny from LOST) will air next year after LOST’s final season. I think this is a stupid choice, they should air it once lost ends or it will fail as every show after lost. they will probably do this because lost audience could be intrested in a new sci fi drama staring penny . but i don’t think people would watch it if it airs in that timeslot.

I hope Flash Forward and V are hits, because lost is ending next year and if ABC can’t get new hit shows it will become NBC. DH and GA will only be for 2 years more.
And Courtney Cox’s sitcom will fail because it would probably be paired with a stupid comedy

  34. The_1337 says:

It looks like Better Off Ted was renewed as well. +1 to ABC

  35. BigVessXpress says:

Multiple websites are reporting that Better Off Ted has been renewed. Another chink in the renew/cancel index. May need some recalculations for next season.

  36. Dorothy says:

I’m thrilled Castle got renewed. One of my favorite shows!

  37. BigVessXpress, maybe it doesn’t need recalculations, maybe an index score of .60 is the “new .92″ this season. ;-)

  38. Nick C says:

I think ABC is trying to create a comedy block and they chose BOT over SAMANTHA WHO.

  39. Miles says:

Great that Castle is renewed! This show really grew on me, sure it’s not at all feasible but it’s a lot of fun.

  40. Mel says:

Yaaaay!!! Castle is a lot of fun!!

  41. vsaint says:

it’s too bad JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof are adapting Stephen king’s “The Dark Tower” into a potential 7 movies.
i wonder if it would work as tv series, 7 seasons, each season dealing with the different books.

  42. Castle renewed?

    Yay!!!

  43. Jesse says:

Hypothesis: What if ABC is renewing all these crappy shows, ratings-wise, to throw on against Leno because they’re cheap and they’ll at least beat Leno on most nights (probably). Maybe they’re thinking “meh, third place is pretty cool.”

  44. catko says:

I”m excited about Castle and shocked (but pleased) about Dollhouse. Now if all the local CW affiliates would pick up REAPER for Sunday nights, it’s restore my faith in TV! I wrote my CW affiliate to tell them so.

  45. s says:

i assume SW? is renewed too and they are still working out the finances so not announced yet they’ve already scheduled repeats of SW? in the summer

  46. Riff Rafferty says:

Was there anyone who couldn’t call “Castle” — and “True Beauty,” since there won’t be a thread about it — getting picked up? Besides the people who run the site, I mean. (”Castle hanging by a thread” anyone?) ABC sunk a small fortune into promotion for it and have been making it priority #1 this whole spring. And they’ve obviously been wanting a “Bones” to call their owns, since their serial dramas repeat about as well as a bean burrito.

“Scrubs” was… a little more desperate. Nevertheless, all hail “The Scrubs Arms!”

  47. peter noble says:

V has been picked up as a limited “event” series according to Variety.

  48. Dave says:

This is great news because Castle has been one of the gems of the current tv season. I am delighted ABC have renewed Castle for another year.

  49. S. says:

What a difference a recession makes, when ABC renews a critically dumped upon, ratings challenged, poorly written, even worse acted, piece of crap like Castle.

SW? had 2 seasons in one of the best spots on the ABC schedule to find it’s viewers. Tested on Thursdays, not only it performed badly, but it lost almost 1.5M viewers from the first airing on Thursday to the others. It shown no potential for growth. I would not be surprised if it was canceled, but the recession is creating havoc in all forecast systems.

  50. Sandrene says:

I’m glad for Castle, but I hope it gets better next season. The dynamic between Castle and his family is great, but the rest of the cast could stand to step it up a notch, or several. Stana Katic is an ok actress, but definitely can’t keep up with Fillion. And the rest of the characters are very one dimensional. If they really are trying to have a crime drama that’s more like Bones, they need to step it up with the acting and character development. Because people definitely aren’t going to get hooked on the episode plots.

  51. Dave says:

@Sandrene, I do hope that Castle doesn’t turn into Bones because each show has their place in the schedule and I genuinely don’t see Castle as “Bones Lite”.

However, after 10 episodes, I think it’s a bit unfair and premature to compare the Castle/Beckett relationship after just 10 episodes to the Brennan/Booth relationship after 84 episodes.

I feel confident with Castle deservedly getting a second season that Fillion (who imho has always been a fantastic character actor) and Katic will grow into their roles and make Castle a sophomore success story.

  52. Tommy says:

Castle doesn’t surprise me one bit, It’s always been the best of the new dramas so I always thought that ABC would bring it back. With Scrubs I think that instead of morphing the show into a completely new series, they should have just done a spinoff. Introduce a new “JD” and then the new show centers around him/her. I think this format of a old show with a new cast will kill it faster than a new spinoff would.

  53. KellyH says:

People who blast “Samantha Who?” for not retaining its post-Dancing audience are not seeing the whole picture. There was a HUGE hiatus between the last Monday airing and the first Thursday one. The first Thursday airing was unexpectedly pitted against Idol because Obama stole some more airetime on Wednesday. They placed it AFTER rather than before the utterly dreary “In the Motherhood.” That was just stupid. AND the other comedy they tried after “Dancing,” Saget’s pitiful vehicle “Surviving Suburbia,” did WORSE after a higher-rated season of “Dancing” than Samantha did. And everyone ignores Jean Smart’s Emmy and Christina Applegate’s “inspiring story” (cover of People’s Beautiful People issue, for goodness sakes). To say that ABC would take BOT OVER SW? is difficult to believe, even coming from a source as typically correct as Nick C. If ABC wants to create a comedy block, having renewed “Scrubs,” wouldn’t Samantha Who? be a natural part of that block? Plus, the trades reported that the existing unaired episodes make it an attractive renewal for ABC because they don’t have to commit to as many episodes to make a full season. Seriously, to renew both BOT and Scrubs but not SW? doesn’t make any sense at all, since ABC also owns SW?

Regarding the Scrubs renewal, the most troubling thing is the absence of ANY mention of Judy Reyes. I can’t believe that Lawrence would write something as idiotic as Turk and Carla getting divorced, so I can’t see Faison being a regular without Reyes there. I mean, unless he has her die in childbirth or something, which would be just wrong. And he can’t break up J.D. and Elliot either or there’ll be hell to pay, so I just don’t see where he could go with the main cast. It makes sense to keep McGinley as the new chief. But if Eliza Coupe is unavailable, then the spinoff potential is also limited since she was by far the most interesting new character.

  54. lulu says:

Castle Yaay, possible Dollhouse yaay again.. just give me chuck now and i’m well happy!

  55. Brian D says:

Castle really isn’t a big shock as it was a good show that had decent numbers all though I’m not going to lie I was concerned with the numbers a few weeks back as they were a horrid decline.

  56. Heather says:

Great news about Castle, but I’m sad that they didn’t let Scrubs die with dignity. I don’t see what the push was to bring it back; it’s not like it’s ratings were even decent.

  57. Heather says:

Also, I was reading something about Scrubs and Samantha Who possibly switching to multicamera to cut costs. Could someone explain to me how switching from single to multicam would save money?

  58. Justin says:

Bill Gorman and robert, When will the next season of Caslte be premiered? September? July?

  59. Gerry says:

Thank you ABC for renewing Castle.

Oh, if only I had a Nielsen box

  60. shelly says:

Justin, the official schedule won’t be revealed till ABC’s upfront on Tuesday. My guess however is that Castle starts in the fall but loses its cushy post Dancing timeslot.

  61. whiplash1972 says:

Yay Castle! Loved the Scrubs finale; it was the perfect ending to the series; not sure they should mess that up by bringing back a partial cast…

  62. Alex says:

I’m glad to see Castle get renewed its grown on me over the course of the season and found its feet nicely.

The Scrubs renewal must be all about the syndication deal and ABC’s desperation to launch a comedy block, although why they think Scrubs is going to help there I’m not entirely sure. I agree with those that have said that this years season finale was a great ending and was probably the right point to end it. We’ll see what happens next year but I don’t have much confidence that this is going to last.

  63. Stacey says:

Hello i hvae a question for Bill and Rob, Will Caslt have the same amount of episodes for the next season?

  64. Nick C says:

Stacey, I believe it got a 13+9. Meaning 13 episodes are ordered with an option for what they call a “back nine.”

  65. ABCFanatic says:

    You know what next season

I bet ABC will have a big loss especially its still the recession!

Renewing Scrubs and Better Off Ted will kill again Tuesday’s Line Up or whatever day they put it on!

  66. Dan says:

Heroes for Ghosts – Thats my exact thought on Scrubs, and I couldn’t agree more.

Riff – I knew all along, Castle would be renewed however True Beauty was a surprise because the point of the first season was that the people didnt know it would be about inner beauty and now they will so season 2 would be kind of odd.

Stacey – Nick C is right, Castle will at first get 13 episodes and depending on how it performs it could extend to 22. And the series will likely be airing in the post Dancing slot on Mondays unless ABC decides to put a comedy at 9:30.

  67. Nick says:

What?! They picked up Scrubs for a full season, but they’re doing V as an “event” series? They just killed off my favorite character on Lost for an “event” series. Fantastic. And now they’re sticking Flash Forward after Lost. Because they haven’t learned their lesson from the last 50 shows that were canceled from being stuck after Lost (Life on Mars, anyone? it was doing great in the fall, and then when they put it after Lost it flopped.)

  68. Sandrene says:

@Dave – I’m not saying Castle should be like Bones, just that it’s a character driven crime drama as opposed to a plot driven crime drama. And it’s a lot more comedic than traditional crime drama. Still, Boreanaz and Deschanel were still better pitted against each other than Fillion and Katic. And I don’t even care much about the sexual tension, I just like to see characters that can go toe to toe instead of one overshadowing or carrying the other. Right now Katic’s not much of a leading lady, especially for a show that’s primarily centered around two characters.

@Heather – Shooting multi-camera drastically cuts down on in-production time because they don’t have to shoot multiple angles of the same scene. A scene with just two characters will usually have a wide shot of the characters and their surrounding, a tighter shot of both characters and then close-ups for each character. That’s 4 different angles, if they don’t shoot from multiple directions for any of those. Average 10 takes per angle, that’s 40 takes. If you use multiple cameras for 3 of those angles (it’s hard to use multi-cameras for very wide shots), you bring it down to 20 takes, cutting your production time in half. That’s half as much studio time and many cast and crew members work on a day rate, so that’s half as much that you’d have to pay them as well. Plus, for action scenes that require a lot of live effects, that budget is cut in half, too. And depending on the show, that’s often a huge part of a the budget.

  69. Riff Rafferty says:

Heather wrote, “Also, I was reading something about Scrubs and Samantha Who possibly switching to multicamera to cut costs. Could someone explain to me how switching from single to multicam would save money?”

Multi-cam comedies which are taped in front of a studio audience are shot in one night (not counting pre-taped segments, i.e. outdoor locations) on a soundstage. Nowhere even close to the shoots of single-camera comedies, which generally average 7 to 10-day shoots. Then there’s the fact that multi-cam half-hours typically employ recycled exterior shots and music cues and most single-cam half-hours do not. Finally, camera operators are paid diddly.

  70. evah says:

Ecstatic on the CASTLE’S renewal….yelling yeah!!!!!!!

  71. Patrick O says:

Imagining Scrubs as a multi-camera comedy is an odd proposition, considering it could make it feel like an entirely different show (even before the cast changes).

  72. Julia says:

They did an episode of Scrubs as a multi-cam. I think it was called My Life in Three Cameras. Third season maybe?

  73. Jesse says:

    @Julia

My Life in Four Cameras, Season 4.

    So very, very close. :P

  74. Dave says:

Did I read that right? Castle’s getting a second season of 13+9? I was only expecting another 10, so 13 is awesome and if it gets the ratings for those extra 9, I will be over the moon with a second season of 22 episodes!

@Sandrene, I know you weren’t saying that at all and I do agree with you. I still feel that although there’s technically two leads with Castle, the show is primarily about Nathan Fillion’s character with Stana Katic as just one of the supporting cast. Should Castle make it to four seasons, like Bones, I just can’t see Katic getting an executive producer credit alongside Fillion as both David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel get for Bones. Having said that though, I love both shows and am just as pleased Bones got an extra 2 seasons as I am that Castle could get a possible 22 episodes over the next 12 months.

So I must also say “Well done ABC for showing faith in Castle!”

  75. bob says:

YES! Castle is comin back! I honestly think the audience for this can grow too. ABC made a good move in giving this show a push, and now renewing it! WOAAH!

  76. chris says:

    Yay for Castle!!! So excited.

  77. Heather says:

Thanks for answering my multicam question, appreciate it!

  78. makulit says:

Hooray! Castle is coming back! Now, is asking ABC to let Castle move to New York pushing it? Hahaha!

  79. gooddealia says:

Finally two of my favorite new shows (Castle and Dollhouse) are getting renewed. I was ready to give up watching any new shows as they get canceled right away and we never get an ending.
