Tuesday Ratings: CBS Repeats Win Again; Diamonds Not ABC’s Best Friend

CBS repeats won again on Tuesday, but the real story was the complete embarrassment of ABC and its miniseries Diamonds which averaged only a 0.6 18-49 demo rating, half of what According To Jim drew at 8. That’s pathetic.

In shows with an actual pulse, NBC has to be happy about its TV’s Funniest Phrases special which managed to be competitive with the CBS reruns and increased every half hour. The premiere of Fox’s Mental didn’t go badly, but its not clear what they were expecting for it. The CW’s Hitched or Ditched started low, but didn’t sink in its second half hour. For a summer reality series on the CW, they’re probably happy.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. David R says:

Im not sure if that is good numbers or not for Mental, but I watched it last night and I liked it very much. When it started it had a House feel to it but that quickly changed once the main character did something you would never see House do. That was in just the opening.

  2. Bad Robot ! says:

Diamonds? More like DIE MOUNDS – mounds where those responsible for that mess should have their careers buried.

  3. Adam says:

I really didn’t like Mental. I’ll give it another shot…but i’m not sure.

  4. Chris says:

I was very dissapointed with mental and I’m sure that I’m not alone.

  5. CP says:

I was intrigued by Mental. I’ll watch it again and hope it stays that way.

  6. GEORGE 11 says:

very good numbers for reaper…but hitched or diched…..just awful!!!

  7. horse_horror says:

Last night’s ratings were a total bore. ABC’s return of Superstars and Got Talent on NBC can’t get here fast enough.

I hope NCIS: LA does well but I hate CBS’ acquisitions of The Good Wife and Medium replacing Trace and Eleventh Hour. Moving The Mentalist makes no sense at all unless they were going to move it to Thursdays at 9pm. Like they always say. Unless its broke don’t fix it.

I can’t wait for ABC Summer Wednesday tonight. Everything is new and exciting. Two premieres with my summer favorite Wipeout then Judge’s series premiere of The Goode Family. Then my guilty pleasure Surviving Suburbia. Only bad thing is The Unusuals which would’ve been a decent ratings player had it not been for the bad programming of having it goes against genre siblings Law & Order and dominating New York.

  8. brian says:

    Save Reaper!

  9. Ed says:

That 2.27 for Tv’s Funniest Phrases at 8pm can’t be right.

  10. ABCFanatic says:

Is TVByTheNumbers going to add Mental and Diamonds to the Cancel/Renew Index?

Well I think those 2 shows are doom.

  11. chet says:

    mental was so so
ill give it another look as with some of the above im undecided
diamonds is boring had a hard time getting into it
the actors seemed a little wooden and the story dragged IMO
shouldnt take so long to get the plot up and running…
    i liked reaper
thought for a sec they were gonna kill off sock-for his other series

    thanks hack for the name
    yeah he steals the show
now whos the crazy nutjob in fringe that steals the show?
ive seen him somewhere before but i cant place it

    ok fandom aside
too bad for reaper to do badly in its finale
like i said before IMO this show is
    underappreciated on that network

funny that we are seeing repeats doing so well
    is that normal for summer?
guess when people get into a routine
    they stick to it
looks like CBS doesnt need to air anything new this summer
they got it covered with repeats
    lolz

  12. AniMatsuri says:

Surely I wasn’t the only one not even aware of the Diamonds mini-series?

  13. Dario says:

ABCFanatic, they are just some stupid summer shows..who cares about them…

  14. if i was fox i would have launched mental after so you think you can dance

  15. ThomasP says:

FOX apparently likes the crazy doctor stuff. With Mental, they now have two shows where a brilliant doctor is the head of a department at a hospital, clashes with his female boss, and uses break-ins at the patient’s house to further his treatment or diagnosis.

  16. So Cal says:

12 mil for Mentalist repeats? Old people must really want their Patrick Jane fix!

  17. LJ says:

Side note: I’d love to see The Goode Family do well and maybe they’ll grab up King of the Hill to pair with it – leave Fox with it’s Seth McFarlane sunday night. They only need to exile the Simpsons for the conversion to be complete.

  18. Doug says:

Those Mentalist repeat numbers demonstrate why it, and not Fringe, was the smash hit of the season, for those still debating it.

  19. Terry says:

I don’t get how cw can just dump reaper….I have never seen it but it is pulling good numbers for the cw…I hope that it can come back as a syndicated show for all u fans!

Me and my family love wipeout!!! 1 show we can all watch and just laugh the whole hour!!!We will be watching!!~~~

  20. OpeningDayGuy09 says:

Doug you are so right! The Mentalist does really well in the area every show is supposed to succeed in and that’s repeats b/c just look at NCIS’ numbers on USA. Dollar Dollar Bill coming to that show 4 life.

  21. Douglas says:

I liked Mental it was great in my opinion. I will definitely watch it again.

  22. Some guy named John says:

ThomasP says: “FOX apparently likes the crazy doctor stuff. With Mental, they now have two shows where a brilliant doctor is the head of a department at a hospital, clashes with his female boss, and uses break-ins at the patient’s house to further his treatment or diagnosis.”

I was thinking the same thing 10 minutes into the show… I know rebranding the same show and airing at another time works for CBS (ex: CSI/NCIS), but it doesn’t mean every network needs to do the same thing.

  23. R.G. says:

ABC must be kicking themselves – CW edged them out of the 18-49…okay, okay it’s small but still a feat for CW being near the big networks…

I noticed ABC put a 3 minute trailer out for “V” … I’m surprised how good it appears – it looks tempting to check out when it airs…

  24. rob says:

So “yad yada yada” is the #1 catchphrase of all time ?

its good but not #1 good….& how did “whatchu talkin bout willis” not make the list.

  25. djm says:

    wow. epic fail for ABC.

  26. shelly says:

R.G., was this the V trailer ABC showed or was it another one?

  27. Scott R says:

Mental was completely terrible…I can’t imagine it will last past the third episode.

    So, so bad…

  28. BigBreadStick says:

That Mental show, which I didn’t watch, didn’t seem to have much promo. I might have seen about 2 spots for it in the past couple weeks. I think too the general TV audience isn’t really watching for new shows in the summertime, they just sorta think TV is for reality timewasting and don’t really get involved.

  29. Kathy says:

I will probably give it another shot next week but I thought Mental was awful. I could barely get through the whole episode but the previews for next week did look a bit more promising.

  30. Ecka says:

Incredible how NCIS repeats are stomping all over the competition, particularly House. That’s a pathetic showing for it & I’m skeptical how effective a lead-in it is for Mental, even assuming Mental was watchable (which I don’t think it is, I think we’ll see a huge drop in viewership over the next week ot two).

  31. Jenna says:

I like The Mentalist…I think it’s an interesting show and Simon Baker isn’t exactly bad to look at! No, but seriously…I like his quirky character and the show intrigues me…

  32. Jenna says:

Ok just realized you were talking about “Mental” and not “The Mentalist”…sorry! I haven’t watched that one yet. I’ll have to check it out!

  33. Chris says:

network tv in the summer is putting me to sleep soon will be whacing all the stuff on Tnt usa and Hbo

  34. Paul PT says:

Without a trace repeats are gold to CBS! what a mistake! far better than cold case repeats, or medium all new! and much more tv programms in television this season.

  35. Pix says:

Mental is the dumbest show ever. Kinda like a bad, boring, terribly filmed, cheap version of House.

  36. ken says:

Pix, the dumbest shows ever are still to come, Wipeout which is a guilty pleasure and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here which just makes you want to have a shower are yet to come.

  37. Chief says:

Mental’s numbers actually look pretty decent considering that Fox essentially spent nothing on the show. The show itself blew, but I have to at least appreciate the thought of original scripted programming during the summer season.

  38. playe says:

Doug, quit it. It is quite a known fact that The mentalist is the smash hit of the season. quit shoving it in people’s faces. People DO enjoy watching Fringe.

  39. Matt says:

I never watch repeats and know very few people that do. Who are these people that are watching them???

  40. Jon K says:

Probably people who missed the episode when it first aired. All the reruns last night were procedurals – shows that you don’t need to watch every week for the story to make sense – so people don’t worry about missing an episode.

  41. Jon K says:

Or people who were watching something else when the episode first aired – like American Idol. That has taken up many hours of airtime on Tuesdays.

  42. Chris says:

i think i will be whacing a Crimnal Minds re run at 10pm i havent seen them all and Law and Order

  43. Tony says:

Total failure of new shows like Mental and Diamond will pave the way for more and more reality TV.

  44. Jon K says:

Mental is an international co-production, so presumably it doesn’t need as high ratings to be a success. We don’t know what FOX was expecting for it, but given that it’s summer I wouldn’t consider it a failure.

  45. shelly says:

Diamond was a one-time miniseries and not a regular show. At least that’s what I thought it was.

  46. Doug says:

Playe, I don’t watch either show, so I really don’t care. I love Lost, so I think I’ll get into Fringe too. But there are some who still debate it intensely.

  47. catko says:

Brian et. al, we are working for a Season Three. Everything we’re hearing is sounding GOOD for the syndication deal for Reaper Season 3. People have had very positive responses from CW affiliates they’ve written. Today we received word that two of the biggest Tribune-owned CW markets in Texas are interested, and since Tribune owns a boatload of affiliates, it’s thought if the Tribune stations come on board, Season 3 is a lock. If you’re concerned about how show creators Fazekas & Butters’ new contract at Fox will affect the show, or Tyler Labine’s new series, we have updates on that too.

We still need fans to show their support; we have about ONE WEEK to get across our love for this show! All links and details here: http://tinyurl.com/reaperlatest

  48. Dennis says:

I still don’t know why “yada, yada, yada* beat “d’oh!”…

  49. Alex says:

I haven’t made my mind up on Mental yet, the pilot didn’t jump out at me as something fantastic but I’ll give it a second epiosde before ditching it. As far as the numbers go its hard to know what Fox really wanted for the show but a 2.1 seems pretty good all things considered and the fact that it held steady throughout the hour will keep them happy as well.

  50. Bad Robot ! says:

I guess they thought since The Mentalist was a success, then something called Mental would be too.

  51. Rod says:

    Bill,

I think there is an error. 2.27 cannot be right for 8pm for TV’s Funniest Phrases.

  52. Bill Gorman says:

Rod, thanks for the catch. It was my typo, the correct number, now in the table, is 5.72 million.
