FOX won the night led by So You Think You Can Dance which averaged a 3.5/10 (rating/share) with adults 18-49.  Wipeout made its season debut with a solid 3.2/10, though that was down from its premiere in late June last year  (June 24, 2008) when it averaged a 3.7/12.   The Goode Family had a mediocre premiere with a 1.6/5 and losing half its Wipeout lead-in among 18-49 year olds.  Still it did better than Surviving Suburbia (1.0/3) and The Unusuals (1.2/3) which both had their lowest 18-49 performance to date.

CBS aired a special, George Strait ACM Artist of the Decade All-Star Concert. It’s 2.2/6 was only about 10% better than the repeat of Criminal Minds (2.0/6) that followed it.

Over on NBC were repeats of the Law & Order franchise.

Previous Wednesday overnight reports are available for comparison.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2009 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. God Particle says:

I had to change the channel after watching 5 minutes of Goode Family. It was that bad.

  2. Adam says:

Isn’t “Goode” made by the same people who made King of the Hill? I’m shocked it wasn’t better. Too bad.

    Now how about that propane!

  3. full half hour data table now posted above.

  4. David R says:

I love how Dance gained viewers every half-hour. I love that show. Hope I remember to keep watching. I wonder if it will do better or worse in the fall.

  5. Lanie Grace says:

    @God Particle

AMEN ! I however made it 10 minutes, it is BADDDDDDD !

  6. chris says:

i thought the goode family was funny last night. people just dont know how to watch television anymore. all this reality garbage is killing television!!!

  7. Alan says:

Yay for Wipeout! Seems to have for the most part maintained its audience from last summer.

I’m glad America hasn’t lost its pleasure in seeing people fall down.

  8. Paul says:

It looks like everybody got snookered in the media with the big link on Drudge Report yesterday, claiming The Goode Family was anti-green, anti-liberal. Watching it last night, it was clear it was anything but that, with the religious abstinence crowd shown as the “real freaks,” alternating with good-natured, innocuous jabs at libs.

Worse, it wasn’t funny in the least. Surviving Suburbia, though, wasn’t too bad (first time catching it this season).

  9. Andrea says:

So which cartoon do you like better: The Goode Family or Sit Down Shut Up?

  10. gmyers says:

After starting slowly The George Strait concert really turned into a blockbuster!

  11. God Particle says:

“So which cartoon do you like better: The Goode Family or Sit Down Shut Up?”

That’s like asking would you rather have someone shit in your mouth or shit in your fruit loops. Neither would be a pleasant experience, just like the shows. I’ll say that SDSU was slightly less horrible.

  12. Anonymous says:

I saw “Surviving Suburbia” for the first time yesterday too – it honestly wasn’t that bad! (and the neighbour was so sexy! lol) I’m surprised it did so poorly last night.

I also watched “Goode” and it was OK….there were a few LOL moments, but I don’t think I’d go out of my way to remember watching this show every week.

  13. Andrea says:

“That’s like asking would you rather have someone shit in your mouth or shit in your fruit loops. Neither would be a pleasant experience, just like the shows.”

But you don’t have to taste the Fruit Loops ;)

  14. dustin says:

I rewatched an episode of Chuck.

  15. Alan says:

What’s wrong with you people? Wipeout is so much fun!

  16. Mark says:

“The Goode Family had a mediocre premiere” – huh? Just because the shows that followed did worse doesn’t mask the fact that it lost such a high amount of its lead-in. It’s premiere was just plain bad.

  17. Carmen says:

I didn’t catch the Goode family, but I have a hard time believing that it would be worse than “Sit Down, Shut Up”

  18. Sean says:

Hi to of topic here but will FOX do the remote free Tv thing again this yr with Dollhouse and Fringe?

  19. Carmen says:

I didn’t catch “The Goode Family”, but I find it hard to beleive that it would be worse than “Sit Down, Shut Up”

  20. Tyler says:

I’ll say one thing for the producers of SYTYCD, they certainly know how to schedule. This show comes on at a time when the competition is arguably at its lowwest point of the year.

  21. Bill Gorman says:

Sean, on the Fox conference call for their upfront, they didn’t make any specific show commitments on using Remote Free TV, but did say it would be used again.

  22. clutz says:

Goode Family has a lot of potential, but the pilot episode was uneven at best. As a KOTH fan, it seemed nearly impossible not to watch Goode without comparison to KOTH. It just didn’t “click” the way KOTH does. Sadly, given the short attention span of modern broadcast nets (and typical TV viewers), Goode won’t be given much time to get itself smoothed out.

  23. chet says:

    on the goode family
it was the judgemental stuff we all know and like
i was surprised i didnt like it
judgemental being mike judges production company
it had its moments ill give it another try

    on suberbia-
    check please…this show…

  24. Dennis says:

After having seen The Goode Family and SDSU I start to notice how good King of the Hill and The Simmpsons really are…

  25. Sean says:

Thanks Bill. Just out of Curiousity does it make Dollhouse and fringe cheaper to make with the Remote tv thing?

  26. nkinsey says:

    Heavenly Particle-

Your comment almost caused Diet Coke to come out my nose.

  27. God Particle says:

“But you don’t have to taste the Fruit Loops”

    Touché ;)

  28. Bill Gorman says:

Sean, if anything, the need to produce an extra 8 or so minutes of every show (in lieu of advertising time) would likely increase the cost of each show. In practice, my guess is that the additional cost involved with the addtional show time isn’t particularly significant.

  29. Josh says:

The Goode Family was a great show IMO. The people who don’t seem to like it are the ones its poking fun at. Maybe it just that I am from California, and it was spot on, in the supermarket. I did not like the voice of the teenager boy, which was a bit too King of the Hill sounding to me.

The problem it had last night is that a core of its potential audience was watching the Country music show, which you should be factoring in.

To those calling abstinence people as freaks, you obviously don’t have a 16 year old daughter. Teenage pregnancy is also a real deal too.

I think the reaction her by some here immediately dismissing the show, shows that Goode is hitting the right Satire, and some folks just can’t stand the mirror. Good satire is missing from most of TV these days.

  30. chris says:

the goode family and surviving suburbia are good and funny shows but people just dont want to watch anything on ABC. I have no clue why.

I may have to start watching CBS even though their shows dont interest me at all!

  31. sam says:

i really thought the goode family was funny

  32. God Particle says:

    “Heavenly Particle-

Your comment almost caused Diet Coke to come out my nose.”

My target demo was actually people drinking Diet Mountain Dew but I’m glad I reached some of the Diet Coke people too.

  33. Christopher says:

i whached Law and Oder svu re run and Crimanl Minds re run

  34. Mega64 says:

I liked The Goode Family. A good mix of a unique premise that puts a spin on good old-fashioned sitcom premises. It manages to make fun of both sides and makes what should be an unlikeable cast of characters pretty likable. In a way, it’s a lot like King of the Hill.

A shame the ratings weren’t that good.

  35. clutz says:

@Josh, you raise some valid points. I do think the show, much like KOTH, is a great concept. Satire can be done without a mean spirit; Mike Judge and company usually rise to the task. The general concept of either show (KOTH or Goode):
    1) Neurotic Mom who feels the need to be right about everything
    2) Well-meaning, average-guy Dad who’s just trying to do right by his family
    3) Girl who is a source of constant worry and overprotective nature in Dad, while a source of frustration for Mom. In KOTH, this was LuAnn. Here, it’s daughter Bliss.
    4) Son who is a sweet, comedically odd kid (Bobby and Ubuntu).
    5) People who are even crazier than the Hill/Goode family, making them look normal by comparsion.

Here’s hoping the Goode Family works out its glitches to become as smooth a satire as KOTH is, but from the opposite side of the cultural spectrum.

  36. j says:

Really? Goode couldn’t even get half the ratings of…Wipeout?

Also, wow at So You Think, managing a 4 in both demos in that last half-hour. I don’t remember what is ratings have been like before, but wow. It should do solidly in the fall. Wednesdays at 8 still look weak. Though the reality smorgasbord of Tuesdays (along with counterprogramming of spinoffs and spinoffs of spinoffs) will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

  37. So Cal says:

    Surviving Surbubia….ain’t surviving without a phat lead-in…HIYO

  38. AniMatsuri says:

If Goode fails its because hardly anyone outside of Hollyweird can really relate to the main characters much. Except for maybe their dog. ;)

  39. craigward says:

I disliked The Goode Family for the same reason I dislike KOTH. I hate watching characters run headfirst into uncomfortable situations. Same deal with Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office.

I guess that’s just where comedy is headed these days.

  40. R.G. says:

“So You Think…”: we enjoy it a lot — a little worried for the fall against stronger competition…especially for Thursdays…but it’s entertaining for the summer – I have to say I would be watching “Wipeout” if “…You Can Dance” wasn’t on…but I’m not going to add Taped TV hours to my schedule – b/c I’m remodeling the house over the summer – sooo I’m good…everything else looks like crap – although I may cave in and check out Conan this Monday nite on the Network that…I’m sorry I can’t keep a straight face and type NBC & Network in the same sentence…hahahahaha

  41. jon says:

you can have some political elements involved like American Dad, but not too much and that is why the Goode Family failed. Nowadays if a show has a strong political theme, then put it on cable news programs where it’s everywhere and not primetime broadcast.

  42. Riff Rafferty says:

However slightly open ABC might have left the door to “Surviving Suburbia,” rest assured they just shut it nice and tight.

Speaking of that one, I felt like giving it another chance, but I only had it on as background noise last night, so I might be mistaken, but was that the pilot? It was written by Kevin Abbott. I noticed Bob Saget and Cynthia Stevenson met Dan Cortese for the first time. You know, Dan Cortese… who they already knew in the first episode ABC aired. (Note to ABC: if you’re going air shows in some random order suggesting you haven’t even bothered to watch the thing, it might help to, I don’t know, put your best foot forward? The first 2 episodes you put on were absolutely awful. This one was at least bearable. Otherwise, viewers might think you’re deliberately trying to sabotage it.)

  43. Matt says:

Dawn must have forgotten to take her meds yesterday. A rerun of the reality show they aired literally yesterday? What the hell…

  44. David R says:

I kept switching between Dance and Goode Family, but what I saw of Goode I liked. I could actually stand it somewhat. Unlike KOTH which makes me sick.

  45. John says:

How the hell is a repeat of Law and Order performing nearly identical to a new episode? (L&O had around 2.0 for new eps)

  46. Jim says:

For some reason, I didn’t think a summer show could get a 4.1 in 18-49 and 4.0 in 18-34. Yet, So You Think You Can Dance proved me wrong.

  47. Master Moron says:

Why is everyone surprised that The Goode Family was humorless? King of the Hill was pretty humorless, too.

  48. Lanie Grace says:

    Josh said

“The Goode Family was a great show IMO. The people who don’t seem to like it are the ones its poking fun at. Maybe it just that I am from California”

    Lanie
Well I am in SF Bay Area in Mountainview and I didn’t like it. To me it was everything you never wanted KOTH to do!

  49. johnthemon says:

I guess I’m among the minority who liked the Goode Family. Too bad it won’t be back next summer. It was high time for somebody to poke fun at the left, instead of the right, because any show that takes a political stance these days goes for the right. I like American Dad, despite it’s left-leaning agenda, but this is a good counterbalance.

  50. Rob D. says:

I agree with johnthemon. I’m conservative and it’s good to see a show make fun of the left. I still like American Dad better and that show mainly makes fun of the right. It is tough to judge this show after just one episode. I doubt it will last very long.

  51. Moose says:

Shouldn’t the Law & Order CI episodes airing on NBC have an (R) next to them? Every episode that I have seen so far this season on NBC, has been previously aired on the USA Network on Sunday Nights. Sure, they may not have aired on NBC before, but does that really make those episodes new programming?

  52. Izzy says:

Well, I watched Wipe Out, Goode Family and Surviving Suburbia.

I don’t really like Wipe Out, It’s really sad what people will do for money in this day and time.

As for Goode Family it only had like 1 key line that caught a smile from me and that was “Sorry dad I used so much gas”, “It’s okay son as long as you feel guilty about it”.. Not that I’m one of those who tries to save gas constantly, I don’t really believe we should feel guilty for living and driving to places we enjoy.

And as for Surviving Suburbia I think Goode Family cursed it. It had like 9-10 million viewers and BAM being right after Goode Family it plummeted to it’s death. And what the heck was up with its storyline? It felt like that episode should’ve been the pilot? It was really weird how they put it together. That couldn’ve cause the flop I suppose. The first few episodes had no potential what so ever, but This episode actually had something to it. And they screw it up by messing with the storyline. Oh well. RIP :(

  53. ABCFanatic says:

wow at Surviving Suburbia from 9 million viewers to 2 million viewers… what a tragic record!

Surviving Suburbia and The Goode Family will not make the midseason of next TV season.

  54. richard less says:

    1. Goode Family was awful–let FOX do all the cartoons.

    2. NBC beaten by Univision. Pathetic.

    3. I hate Wipeout.

  55. Joe says:

The episode of Surviving Suburbia was the best one and likely the pilot given the plot while the episode ABC actually showed first was horrid. They really messed up as the show had potential. When it was good, it was quite funny. I hope we someday get to see the unaired episodes as I liked the show.

  56. Mel says:

    I was watching my DVD’s of the first season of Pysch — doesn’t seem like I missed much . . . . .
