Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Adam says:

Yeah, I couldn’t watch it on tv last night… cause I was definitely there!!!! Go Wings!

  2. clutz says:

Adam, although I disagree with your Go Wings enthusiasm, I remain jealous that you attended a Cup Final game. I cannot attend Tuesday or Thursday in my home city, but in spiriti I am there already, willing the Pens to get their mojo back :)

  3. clutz says:

    darn typos! “spirit” not “spiriti”

  4. Vinny says:

DH and B&S did terrible thanks for the post.

  5. Vinny says:

    even for a repeat.

  6. Andrea2 says:

I may have missed it, but when has NBC air the Part II of the Last Templar rerun?

  7. J.Norman says:

Well, I guess some kudos of a sort are in line for the NHL. It’s good to see more than 10 people who aren’t physically at a game or a specialized sports bar actually watched a game.
For once, the NHL has managed to do something smart. That is, schedule thier games on a date where it is arguably the weakest time that a Sunday will ever be. They also got caught a break by not having an NBA game to contend with.

  8. Andrea, it’s scheduled to air next Sunday.

  9. David says:

“Breaking Bad” last night was one of the greatest tv show episodes in history. “Ice Road Truckers” was good too because the new location of the show is especially treacherous. I cannot believe how many people still watch broadcast tv. Most of these broadcast shows will beat the ratings of those two great cable shows last night.

  10. jay says:

I’m so used to seeing things by the numbers now my first thought was, wow, are these Friday or Saturday numbers? The whole summer must be a huge down time for all TV people, from our hosts here up to Silverman, Moonves, et al. I’ll bet our guys here put their time to better use than TV people seem to! Any takers on that sucker bet?

  11. David4 says:

Looks to me that CBS won the night. You can’t say something else won (hockey) because of demos, and then brag about how many people watched it in total.

  12. Bill Gorman says:

David4, again with the “NHL stole my lunch money” grudge? ;)

Demos are all that matter to the TV business. Viewership’s just for PR boasting (or in this case historical reference when I don’t have past year demo numbers, which is often the case).

If it makes you feel better, the 18-49 demo of 2.2 on Sunday for the NHL game was much better than Saturday’s 1.7.

I’d love to compare demo numbers for past NHL Stanely Cup Finals years, but I don’t have them!

  13. craigward says:

Demo ratings count more because advertisers value 18-49 viewers more than viewers outside that age range.

  14. craigward says:

    Also go Wings.

  15. Kathy says:

The ABC dramas do horrible in repeats. lol

  16. Chief says:

I’m interested in the numbers that the MTV Movie Awards did. I’m pretty confident this will be yet another night where a show on cable beats all of the broadcast networks.

  17. dave says:

You probbaly never see Canadian ratings for the nhl, but they’re through the roof most likely. People forget that this is only half the story for the nhl’s popularity. I’d wager that the NHL and NBA have similar North American audiences.(although the NBA has a bigger worldwide audience.)

Please post the CBC numbers for the NHL finals if you ever see them, I’d be curious.

  18. Bill Gorman says:

dave, While I will definitely post the Canadian NHL TV numbers if I see them, its not likely because the media we track don’t cover them. However, it’s certainly likely that one of our readers will see the numbers, and they’re welcome to post them in the comments.

  19. Julia says:

David, I’m a huge Breaking Bad fan but I thought the finale was a bit of a letdown. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I thought the big reveal that they’ve been setting up all season was hugely disappointing. They’ll have to do something big to make it worth it next season.

  20. Julia says:

Dave, if a Canadian team were in the finals I would agree with you but are Canadians really as interested when it’s two American teams?

  21. Andrea2 says:

“it’s scheduled to air next Sunday.”

Thanks. It seems a pretty stupid schedule move. Ok, it’s a reapet, but Part II two weeks after Part I. Didn’t they have a one night movie to fill last Sunday instead?

  22. Vinny says:

bill this might be a random question but do u no the average viewa chelsea latley gets.

  23. djm says:

I know you guys dont take requests, but I would be interested in seeing ice road truckers numbers, for the premier atleast.

  24. Sean says:

I think its pretty funny that NBC has stumbled into the perfect time for hockey (summer, Sunday, nothing but repeats to compete with) and they have scheduled a possible Game 7 for a FRIDAY night. I feel like I should change my posting name here to “NBCSux” or something.

And a better question…why doesnt NBC want ALL seven games of the Stanley Cup finals? Versus is now most-likely going to get its best number ever with Games 3 & 4 and take away 5-6 million sports fans with them who, you know, may want to watch that Conan guy at 1130.

  25. Bill Gorman says:

djm, I will keep an eye out for the press release on Ice Road Truckers. I’ll drop there numbers into the comments on the cable weekly post if Robert hasn’t already done so. After all, they’re one of our advertisers!

  26. Bad Robot ! says:

CW Sundays are sputtering as it crosses the finish line before it finally stops trying to program Sunday Nights.

JERICHO got a zero share for 18-34. Nice.

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN? More like DESPERATELY SEEKING VIEWERS….

So when will CW turn over the night affiliates? JERICHO burns off its final rerun in 2 weeks. I guess that will be replaced with more DREW CAREY?

What a dull night. The only thing I watched was part of that thing where Jesse James was trying to get himself killed on some exploding motorcycle.

  27. Bill Gorman says:

Bad Robot, I don’t recall seeing an official date for the CW’s “Bleh, Sunday, you take it!” transfer to the affiliates, because of that, I’d be surprised if it were soon (as opposed to Aug/Sept).

  28. dave says:

julia, Detroit is an original 6 team and Sid Crosby is a hugely popular Canadian player, and I think that helps offset the fact that neither team is Canadian. It’s not like its a Carolina vs. Anaheim.

  29. Julia says:

How much control does NBC really have on scheduling the games? I’m sure they had a say in not taking games 3 and 4 but did they put game 7 on Friday or was that the NHL?

  30. Vinny says:

Bill do u no how many views chelsea latley gets.

  31. Bill Gorman says:

Vinny, we don’t get nightly cable show numbers, and Robert handles the weekly cable show posts on Tuesdays.

  32. laura says:

Does anyone know the ratings for last night’s MTV music awards and THE HILLS season 5 finale?

  33. Andrea2 says:

    Robert that is not correct

  34. mike says:

Julia, the Wings have a huge fan base across the Detroit river in Windsor Ontario, so for many Canadians, the wings are essentially their hometown team.

  35. Christopher says:

i whached Law and Oder Ci and In Plain sight last night

  36. people PLEASE STOP ASKING FOR CABLE RATINGS in the BROADCAST overnight posts.

We post the information for cable shows WHEN WE SEE IT which is ALWAYS AFTER we get the overnight numbers for broadcast. Cable overnight numbers are NOT published as swiftly as the preliminary broadcast numbers, so there is simply no way to put the two together. Sorry.

MTV is generally pretty good about providing us with ratings info as soon as they have it (at least when the numbers are good). I’d expect to see them by 5pm eastern time or so.

  37. Andrea, I’m not sure what you’re referring to, if it’s The Last Templar part II broadcast, I’m just going off NBC’s published schedule which is here:

    http://www.nbc.com/Schedule/

there are multiple sources for schedule information from the networks themselves (see above link) to sites like TVGuide.com which offer TV listings. For schedule information those are the best places to look.

  38. Vinny says:

    srry bill and robert.

  39. TomSD says:

Dave: Even I know that Basketball is way more popular in North America than hockey and I’m not even American. The basketball collegiate level alone is more popular than Hockey in general.

  40. Jeff G says:

Good for the NHL. I am glad viewers tuned in. This and the NFL are the only NBC programs I watch. Medium was included until CBS wised up.

  41. vsaint says:

Last years Game 1, drew 2.11 million cdn viewers.
usually peaks about 4 million for later games 6 or 7.

  42. Jim says:

Family Guy holds up well in repeats. No one is touching its 18-34 ratings. Then again, it does very well on cable as well.

  43. Anonymous says:

Here’s the Canadian NHL numbers for the weekend – they were strong, but not HUGE by any means (due to the lack of a Canadian team in the finals)

“Hockey roared back on CBC as the Detroit-Pittsburgh Stanley Cup opener drew 1,726,000 Saturday. Another 1,875,000 tuned in Sunday night for Game Two.”

    Source: http://tvfeedsmyfamily.blogspot.com/

  44. Bill Gorman says:

Anonymous, thanks for the link. To put that in perspective, the population of the Canada is approximately 1/10th that of the US.

  45. jeff says:

So by that Bill, it would be the equilvenant of like almost 19 million people watching in Canada if matched up population wise.

  46. Bill Gorman says:

jeff, yes I’d say that’s the comparison I’d make.

  47. Network Freelancer says:

    Sean & Julia,
Regarding the NHL Schedule and NBC Vs. Versus

The networks(NBC, Versus and CBC) all have a strong voice in the NHL schedule (which is why they had back to back games this past weekend) however the league has the final say. One factor in choosing game nights is building availability (like concerts already on the building schedule).

The NBC and Versus current contracts with the NHL state that Versus gets 2 games in the NHL finals and NBC gets the rest that is why Versus gets games 3 & 4 in Pitt.

The networks also become exclusive in the U.S. for the Conference Finals and Finals which gives the ratings a boost over the first 2 rounds where the home and visiting teams also broadcast in their home towns (such as Fox Sports net in Pittsburgh or Comcast in Philadelphia) which gives the networks ratings competition as the “locals” like to hear their own hometown announcers on the game.

All that being said I’m thrilled our ratings were so high…hopefully the Pens will come back and make a great series out of it.

  48. ABCFanatic says:

    ABC sucks on repeats!

You can’t blame me since I don’t watch repeats too!

  49. bob says:

all the NHL has to do is stay away from the NBA games, and they will consistantly pick up solid ratings on NBC or Versus, although… I am told that the NHL stupidly put game 4 the same time that the NBA has game 1 of their finals… NOT SMART… That is possibly why the NHL has a game 7 on a friday, because NBA wont air any of their games on fridays, so the NHL wanted to stay clear. I think the NHL and NBC are doing a good job stradegy wise.

  50. bob says:

wow, i just said an oxy-moron, i said NBC is doing a good job with something. haha
