For all the reviews I saw about the premiere of NBC’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here one might have predicted the show would tank in the ratings. But critical acclaim doesn’t always (or even usually) correlate with the ratings, and I’m sure I’m a Celebrity did better than many thought it would. It grew both adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 each half hour of the two hour premiere.
For the two hours, Celebrity posted a 2.6/8 with adults 18-49, and I’m guessing since one of NBC’s competitors had to go into the wayback machine to find anything mean to say (down 51% versus the 5.3/14 the premiere on ABC initially drew on Feburary 19, 2003) that NBC will be just fine with those results.
CBS repeats continued to be impressive and overall its hard to imagine ABC was all that unhappy with the performance of its reality fare either. The season (and NBC) finale of Medium pulled a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating, tying it with a rerun of CBS’ CSI: Miami.
If you’re looking for info on Conan O’brien’s debut on The Tonight Show, click away. If you’re looking for data on any cable shows that aired last night, we won’t see it either until its issued in a press release or in next week’s data that we’ll receive a week from tonight. I’ll be on the lookout for how Jon & Kate Plus 8 did last night though.
P.S. I just heard Heidi and Spencer have allegedly quit I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here again, and this time, apparently, allegedly, they mean it…maybe. I don’t have a link, but if that sort of thing interests you, you can likely Google it.

Shows are sorted by 18-49 rating in each time slot.
Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2009 The Nielsen Company.
Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

I can’t believe so many people watched that crap on NBC. I hope Spencer and Heidi die down there. That would do the world a great service. Maybe that was NBC’s plan all along…. To bad they are giant cowards and chickened out….. again.
“P.S. I just heard Heidi and Spencer have allegedly quit I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here again, and this time, apparently, allegedly, they mean it…maybe. I don’t have a link, but if that sort of thing interests you, you can likely Google it.”
I guess I won’t be tuning in tonight then. Honestly, this show will probably be so bland without them. If you watched, every contestant minus Sanjaya complained about them and it was always funny seeing the contestants make impressions of them lol. Now, with them gone, who are the contestants going to constantly bicker about?
The UK version was better IMO.
Oh, and didn’t it get cancelled on ABC? How does a reality show get cancelled with a 5.3 premiere? Unless the ratings took a nose dive down…
The headline: “I’m a celebrity…leads NBC to victory.” But CBS have higher ratings? I don’t get it.
Hudson, in 2003 the line for renew/cancel decisions was very different!
Conan, CBS had more total viewers, but the TV industry focuses on demographics, not viewers. A lot of people don’t seem to like that, but that dislike doesn’t change what the networks actually focus on.
Any chance you can post half-hour breakdowns for the 10 o’clock shows? Thanks for everything!
remember when american gladiators led nbc to victory? these mediocre numbers mean squat until a few weeks later or even by the end of the week since it’s on every day
Spencer was SOOOO obnoxious and snobbish; Five star everything… I enjoyed the hour i watched.
Do you need “Celebrities” to call it “I’m a Celebrity….” ???
Tragic…
Hudson, your comment (being the latest in a long line of similar ones) inspired me to codify what I will call
“The Gunsmoke Rule”: No comparing the ratings of any individual show this season to a show in any season except the previous one. “How could CBS have canceled Gunsmoke, for some dreck like CSI? Gunsmoke pulled a 40 rating in 1960!“
I think its obvious that CBS cares about 18-49- 25-54 – and total viewers equally.
[sarcasm]It’s a shame NBC already renewed Chuck,[/sarcasm] clearly this nonsense could compete in the fall against new episodes of House and the CBS comedies.
Shows like “I’m a Celebrity…” are why we can’t have nice things!
But then, who would want to watch “I’m a struggling middle-class person help me prevent foreclosure and feed my family!”
gmyers, that’s not correct for prime-time. Only their PR department cares about total viewership. Adults 25-54 are the target audience for some programming, primarily news shows, both cable and broadcast. But Adults 18-49 is the primary target for all the broadcast networks in primetime except the CW, which cares most about women 18-34.
Well, Celebrity did outpull the Chuck finale in 18-49…duck, run, run very fast.
I know, Chcuk did better with the Subway footlong demo. But maybe Celebrity got better six-inch numbers. (This sounds faintly obscene.)
Medium did as it always does…consistent!
Plus, NBC has maybe ONE commerical for the show on…at 9:45.
Come on NBC….CBS is going to treat this show so much better.
The cliff hanger ending is more than disturbing considering it would ahve been the series finale if CBS had not picked it up….not a good way to end a well-respected show at all.
Luckily it will be on next year!
Gee, I can’t even spell Chuck. Must be something Freudian. Anyhoo, the target demos are starting to shift ever so slightly as the wheels of U.S. demography grind slowly but exceeding fine. Hallmark Channel has even talked about, gasp, 30-64! Heavens!
#savegunsmoke ! Everybody eat at Howard Johnson’s next Monday!
I admit, I watched that crap last night. Heidi and Spencer are insufferable. I don’t know whether having to put up with them is any better than the show being boring. There’s a line between entertaining and nails on a chalkboard.
Casey, my early comment applies to broadcast primetime target demos. Cable networks often target different age and gender demographic groups.
I’m not surprised by “I’m a Celbrity…” success. I tuned in not sure what to expect and found it much more buzzworthy and juicy than expected. Sanjaya was smart and cut his hair for the show – that will certainly cause some buzz. He took his shirt off a lot which will help with the ladies and seems like a player to contend with.
I’ve never watched the hills before so was not very familiar with Spedi – however his over the top actions will surely cause some good buzz going into tonight’s episode and I’ll bet money that the ratings tomorrow are higher than last night. BTW what the hell did she keep spraying on her hair? Powdered shampoo or something?
Janice Dickenson has the potential to be crazy, but came off very sane and Mom like against the rest of the cast.
Patti Blogovovich I felt sorry for her – I think she will def get sympathy votes and was prob the better move over Rod. I respected the fact that she still had her head down in that trench thing at the end of the show.
Let’s be honest. We deserve what we get on T.V. – and for the most part, it’s CRAP! Another freakin’ “celebrity” program doing well in the ratings?? Let’s just “chuck” (no put intended) ALL scripted TV that tells real stories, engages viewers, makes people think, inspires the imaginations of FUTURE writers – and just put on nothing but reality crap.
Yes, you can say that “they’re popular,” people like them! I don’t disagree with that. But the Romans also loved the “reality TV” of their time – watching people get ripped apart by lions. Just because it was “popular” and “they loved it,” doesn’t mean that it was good for them. Rome eventually FELL, remember??
I feel badly for our young people who are being exposed to mind numbing “music” (again it’s the same scenario here – there are no more singer/songwriter/storytellers anymore – Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, etc., etc. to engage and inspire the imaginations of young “listeners.”). Just like there’s basically only or mostly crap with music, it’s the same with TV.
Someone please help me compile a list of these “reality tv shows,” or Robert and/or Bill – can you please tell me/us how many “scripted” shows are on the major networks vs. how many “reality” shows?
As long as we’re going down the trend of the disappearance of quality, story-telling, scripted programs, I figure I might as well get on board the “reality train” and start suggesting even MORE ideas for new “reality” programs.
For example:
I know we had “Fear Factor” where people had to eat internal organs, ,etc. but how about a show to counter “Biggest Loser” called “Bigest GAINER.” We’ll put a bunch of people in a house and load it with pizzas, burgers, ice cream, cake, cookies, etc. and see each week who actually GAINS the most weight! And then the winner each week would get to tell us how much they ate. Wouldn’t that be TOTALLY AWESOME television. Who needs stuff that entertains us when we can have “great stuff” like that.
I think that ad with Alec Baldwin (of whom I’m NOT a fan) for HULU where he says it’s a conspiracy to “turn our brains to mush” isn’t a joke. IT’S REAL!!
So, please networks, please cancel a quality scripted show and replace it with “Biggest Gainer,” or even better, TWO nights a week of “Biggest Gainer!” The viewing public will LOVE it – as we continue to get dumber and dumber and dumber (and then wonder why all our doctors, I.T. people, and spelling bee champs are coming from India). [Note: nothing against our friends from India, I think they're great. I'm must trying to make a point here].
God help us all!
It feels very weird to see the words NBC and win the night in the same sentence…
Alex, it was a three-peat for NBC, they won Saturday and Sunday too!
I have to admit I surfed over to watch “Celebrity” during commercial breaks of the CBS comedy block shows (which I’m finally getting a chance to see without a new episode of House. . .but that’s a topic for another day).
You can never account for taste of some people, but I have a hard time believing that Heidi -and especially Spencer – did themselves any good with their performance on the show. Even if staged. But who knows, maybe that’s what the good old 18-34 demo gets off on.
Should I know who Heidi & Spencer are?
Rick Holy, I am not a fan of reality and I would never watch a single one if it were up to me (living with my brother’s family for a few months means I’m being subjected to a LOT of reality I wish I never had to watch) but what you don’t seem to get is that the only reason any network can afford to have any scripted programming at all is because of reality shows that keep the network from completely bleeding money. Every successful reality show means more money the network has to develop new scripted content.
GUNSMOKE may have been more popular than even AMERICAN IDOL, but how did it do in the key demos! I bet mostly old people watched GUNSMOKE.
They should bring back GUNSMOKE, only this time Marshall Dillon would be a SKYNET cyborg (who peels the skin off the real Marshall Dillon) sent to Dodge City to hunt for Sara Conners great great grandfather who is somewhere in Kansas. In the first episode Festus says “Ya knaw, dere aint some-tin right about Matthew since he comed back from his trip to Topeka. And Id really like to know where he got dem fancy shootin irons from – they aint like no guns Ive ever saw.”
Now that Spencer and his creepy flesh colored beard have left the show, it just aint worth watching anymore! LOL!
I think NBC will win again tonight. With Celeb, Brian Williams Obama special and the SVU finale and Conan later I see lots of eyes watching NBC
Julia – but are they actually developing more new scripted content, or only MORE reality – especially if it’s the reality shows that are making the money.
I’m no expert at this and don’t claim to be. I’ve just been around long enough to know that 10 years ago most of the shows on TV were good, quality scripted programs – and the networks made money.
I know times and tastes change. They do. But I don’t follow the logic that because reality shows make money for the networks, then they have more money to put into the scripted shows – because it doesn’t appear that that’s what they’re doing. It’s like if I sold golf tees (don’t know why I said golf tees, because I don’t golf). If I sell alot of golf tees, it’s highly probable that I’ll take my profit and invest it in more equipment to make more golf tees – and not something else like croquet wickets. So if I’m a network exec. and reality is making me money, why would I then use that money to fund scripted shows – which apparently don’t do as well as the reality shows – when logic would tell me to put that money into more reality shows to make me more money?
Sorry I’m rambling. My bad. I guess my point is that I don’t see “more scripted shows” coming out as a result of the popularity of the “reality” shows. Was that the point you were making??
Thanks – and again – either you’re very precocious or that’s a darn cute kid you’ve got!
You know Rick Holy, a show with lions tearing celebrities apart is something I’d watch
Rick,
By my count of the shows appearing on the Fall schedule 21 are new. Of those only ONE is reality (Shark Tank). I’m not seeing a bunch of new reality shows out there. They might not be canceling them as often as scripted shows, but that’s just a guess.
I think a bigger problem might be the quality of the scripted shows at least in my view. The only new show that I’m definitely going to watch is Community. I might try some others but am not very hopeful.
Baby sister. I’m not ready for kids.
ABC, NBC and FOX each have one big unscripted show to help keep them afloat during the regular season. They do have a couple of others that they throw in there but scripted is still the majority of content (if you discount Leno and the special circumstances surrounding that.) We are currently in summer programming where there definitely will be more reality, but there was a breakdown done by Bill or Robert a couple of weeks ago comparing last fall to this fall. I think there was slightly more reality if you don’t count Leno, but not by much.
LOL@ kermonk
does fox have any plans for the summer? or will they just be dueling it out with MYtv?
Julia & Scott – thanks for clueing me in on what’s what with scripted vs. reality. I guess maybe it’s because there are a few reality shows which are so mega-popular, it just seems like there’s more of them out there.
Oh well. Rap music has survived for 25 or so years (much to my chagrin – except for Tone Loc – I did like “Wild Thing” and “The Funky Cold Medina” but that was about all), so I guess reality is here to stay!!
Let’s just hope that with some of these new scripted shows we get some good quality stuff worth watching!!
Peace all! Time for me to disappear! (and Kermonk, I don’t think you’re the only one who would tune in to see “Lions vs. Celebrities).
Leno’s really the only big unscripted addtion to the English broadcast schedules. Granted, it’s a big addition.
Shark Tank is the only other *new* unscripted show on English broadcast next fall. Although So You Think You Can Dance is new to fall, but not “new”.
And again, other than Leno, there is no big unscripted tidal wave next fall, pretty much small ups and downs. CW loses one 1 hr show, CBS no change, ABC expands DWTS Monday by 30 minutes, Fox shifts SYTYCD to fall displacing Moment of Truth, Kitchen Nightmares, Lyrics and 5th Grader adding a net 1 hour less reality. Even NBC, while adding 5 hours of Leno, is removing 2 hours of DonD and America’s Toughest Jobs for a net 3 hour addition.
It’s okay, Kathy, I have no idea who they are, either. Or who John and Kate are or any other reality person on tv.
Rick Holy, there are people who loathe “reality” tv and prefer smart, good television. These people do exist…they’re just in the minority.
Bill, didn’t FOX also have the Japanese game show last year? I know it was canceled fast but it was on the schedule originally I think
Julia, I was correcting my earlier comment while you were typing. Fox is actually reducing its reality / week by an hour, but I’m pretty sure that Hole In The Wall was a mid-season show not a fall show.
Hole in the Wall was a fall show. Premiered in September.
Yeah, lasted I think two weeks in Sept before they pulled it until midseason.
ABC’s version did fall swiftly from a bigish premiere. Here are the ratings I have:
Viewers/adults 18-49
Wed 10: 11.3 mil 5.3/14
Thur 10: 7.8 3.6/9
Fri 10: 7.4 2.9/6
Sat 10: 5.7 2.6/8
Sun 7: 6.3 3.1/8
(week missing)
Mon 8: 8.7 2.9/8
Tue 9: 10.1 4.3/11
Wow. I can’t believe that much changed concerning the ratings in 6 years!
Julia, are you talking about “I survived a Japanese Game Show!”, because that is coming back in July.
Keep in mind that ABC’s version did air in February, so I would call NBC’s a bigger success at this point, if it doesn’t drop considerably.
NBC’s “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” makes ABC’s “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” look like ITV’s “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!”
Seriously, why did this show come back? Wasn’t the first time sufficient? The premiere of this new version was so bad and so fake, I couldn’t even make it past the first 20 minutes. And I’ve never in my life met a piece of trash I couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes. I’m reminded of an old joke Leno did when the ABC version was on. “These AREN’T celebrities… leave them there!”
No, Hudson, I was talking about Hole in the Wall, which was based on a Japanese game show that is popular on YouTube. (Game shows in general are far superior in Japanese.)
~sigh~ Soooo…I went to watch “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here” — However I didn’t see ANY CELEBRITIES to help get them “out if there”…so I turned the channel…
Wouldn’t it make sense for NBC to rerun classic programs from the NBC/U vaults over the summer, on Friday and Saturday nights?
Let’s see: Adam-12, 50’s Dragnet, 60’s Dragnet, Emergency!, Quincy, the original Battlestar Galactica, Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century (whoops! wrong studio, but Daffy Duck has more personality than almost everyone put together on Buck Rogers
), Colombo, and My Three Sons, among others…
…and, if I recall, they could air Psycho, Hellfighters, and Spartacus without paying any license fees as well
Meduim was so good gald CBS saved it
Theoacme, CBS did that one summer years ago, running old All in the Familys on Friday nights. They got surprisingly good ratings.
NBC couldn’t do any worse, trying that.
If anyone cares…
Ratings: Two New Episodes of ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8′ Score Big
June 1 installments of controversial TLC series average 5.7 million viewers
By Mike Reynolds — Multichannel News — Broadcasting & Cable, 6/2/2009 1:53:00 PM MT
Posted at 7:36 p.m. ET
The gawking wasn’t quite as great as for the show’s fifth-season debut, but the Gosselins scored big with the Nielsens for TLC Monday night.
Both new telecasts of Jon & Kate Plus 8 at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. set cable’s primetime pace in households, viewers, key demos and women’s groups on June 1, according to network officials.
The 9 p.m. show averaged 5.5 million viewers, serving as a strong lead-in to the night’s second installment, which posted a 4.3 household rating and 5.9 million watchers on average, according to Nielsen Media Research data.
Jon and Kate Plus 8 at 9:30 p.m. was the No. 1 program of the night for ratings and delivery, beating all of broadcast and cable among women 18 to 49, persons18 to 34 and women 18 to 34.

Paul – I forgot about that – and CBS didn’t own AITF, either, although the licence rate was probably pretty low…
…as for network owned libraries, what Paramount library shows could CBS run (imagine Cheers on CBS?!) – plus CBS has the rights to most of the Quinn Martin programs. Disney has a fair library in terms of quality, but despite having Touchstone Studios, ir is somewhat weaker than either CBS or NBC’s. As for FOX, it’s studio’s most historically popular show, M*A*S*H, is not currently available (and might be too overexposed even for Saturday nights) – but it has some depth in its library (can you say “The Shield”?)
Plus, Columbia and Warner Brothers also have some good free agents to fill out a weekend schedule.
As for NBC, they could solve about ten Saturdays – schedule Notre Dame football for Saturday nights – even Irish haters would watch
Chris the TV Sage, once again you bring a smirk to my face!
Bill, you do get the props for the set up though!
Word of the day: celebrity — a famous or well-known person: fame, renown
After looking over the list of folks in this show… well, I guess the modern definition of “celebrity” has become a subjective thing. I am vaguely aware of two people and have a moderate remembrance of a third. Beyond that… nothing.
Well, each to their own. Apparently there are folks who like this type of show. I’m not one of them. I would have been a bit more impressed if there were folks that I actually recognized in the line-up, though. To those who like it, enjoy the ride.
Does anyone really expect reality shows with “Celebrity” in the title to feature actual celebrities? Because I sure didn’t.
Scripted TV is great, but there’s still entertainment in reality TV. There are quality shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race that really look at interpersonal dynamics and how people interact in various situations and environments, and then there’s shows like I’m a Celebrity… and your VH1 fare which aren’t educational at all but pure entertainment. Not all television has to be classy and life-changing. I’m sure the millions of people who watched Seinfeld didn’t watch it to be enlightened, but just for some good laughs. That’s why people watch shows like I’m A Celebrity…, except instead of jokes people laugh at the misfortune and suffering of these “celebrities.”
It’s been nine years since Survivor was big, and it’s pretty sad that there’s still this elitist movement that instantly dismisses all reality TV like it’s fodder for America’s idiots. There’s some good stuff in there, and there’s enough entertainment value in even shows like I’m A Celebrity… that it’s fun to watch and not take seriously. Not every TV show has to make you think or change your life, the same with books, movies, video games, and pretty much every other form of media out there. What makes TV so special?
WOW the finale of Medium was outstanding. Nice cliffhanger but its obvious Allison will be fine. i just hope the move to friday night wont kill it.
Theoacme, NBC already has that channle it is Retro Television Network, it is a digital channle that most NBC nets have as their 2nd Digital Channle, it should also be on cable, has The A-Team, Knight Rider, etc
LMAO at Speidi quiting
What does Celebrities ratings do to Chucks chances of getting a back 9 next year. Or is this irrelevant. Thanks.
the idiot who thought up this show for nbc should be shot. the idiot who was pitched the idea and gave a ‘go’ should be shot…over and over again. what a waste of time. what an insult to viewers to watch sad little spoiled wash-ups whine about this and that.
does nbc now stand for ‘nuked by choice’?
the same idiot that brought us this trash is probably the same idiot that let ‘medium’ go to the other network…..jeff immelt–clean house and get some people with BRAINS in there running things or get used to looking at the backsides of your competition for YEARS to come. IDIOTS.
