VH1’s Highly Rated Shows Are Nearly All On Sunday & Monday

Posted on 16 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

I’m plenty old enough to remember when VH1 was established as the music video channel for old people. Very soon afterwards, I was in its target demo.

Now, like sister channel MTV, it’s no longer programming music videos, but I admit not knowing what any of the shows in its top 20 list are about. VH1 was #31 in average viewership in prime-time last week, and I do find it a little interesting that 18 of its top 20 shows last week were telecast on Sunday and Monday. Highly rated show marathons? Maybe a VH1 fan can enlighten us in the comments.

  1. Number Cruncher says:

Thank you so much. This post is very much appreciated.

  2. Bill Gorman says:

Number, so any idea why all the highest rated shows were on Sunday or Monday?

  3. RJ says:

VH1 has ALWAYS shown these types of shows on Sundays and Mondays. I have seen most of them, and I can not remember one of them airing on a different day. I do find it odd though that VH1 airs their originals at 11am on Sundays and then say they are “NEW” at 9pm on Sunday nights. New York Goes to Work is one of my favorites, followed by Charm School 3, and then Daisy of Love.

Thanks for posting these numbers! :)

  4. sam says:

bill its because vh1’s heavy hitter shows are those days there promoted heavaly

  5. Mostly it is because they air their most popular shows on Sunday and Monday and then rebroadcast them throughout the week. Like the broadcast networks, right now is “off season” for VH1 (though that might be changing soon, I haven’t scanned its summer lineup). But in the spring when they were reaching the 2 millions with I Love Money, For the Love of Ray J and Rock of Love, those were all Sunday and Monday shows as well.

  6. Number Cruncher says:

It’s because that’s when the new episodes of their 3 highly touted reality shows of this season air (Daisy of Love, Charm School 3 and New York Goes to Work). They show a morning airing (11 or 11:30 am), the primetime airing (9 or 10 pm) and then a repeat an hour after the primetime airing. I will be the first to admit that this is the weakest cycle of shows that VH1 has aired thus far and the ratings obviously reflect that although I had no idea how well Daisy of Love had been performing in the repeats.

  7. Julian says:

Sunday and Monday is when all their reality programing premiers. The rest of the week are repeats of those programs mixed in with years old repeats of specials and every once in a while movies, moslt Grease which they show 10 times a year. Surprised it still does so good for them.

  8. Cullen says:

A request for next week: Spike TV

  9. tooltip86 says:

It’s too late for a next week request? I was thinking about A&E.

  10. Bill Gorman says:

    tooltip, it’s never too late!

  11. Ash says:

Thank you so much for this posting! I was real curious about Brook knows best, since they used the real life storyline about the split of Hulk Hogan and his crazy wife. It was a really good episode that week. Any idea if Kathy Griffin’s My life on the D list is doing well? It’s a really great show. Thanks again :)

  12. Dan says:

Flow. A marathon has flow, VH1 has no rhyme or reason the rest of the time.

  13. David says:

I agree about A&E next week. I used to like the reality shows on VH1 but I grew tired of all the spin off reality shows and now I rarely watch VH1.

  14. TomSD says:

Where would VH1 be if Flavor Flave hadn’t been tin The Sureal Life 3?

  15. Mega64 says:

The Flavor of Love family (i.e. The various “of Love” shows and spin-offs Charm School and I Love Money) have a pretty solid fanbase. For example, if you’re going to watch Daisy of Love, you’re probably also going to watch Charm School 3 and New York Goes to Work. There’s a lot of overlap in contestants with these shows, and not just in the spin-offs either, so that’s why these shows keep getting solid ratings. The fans are more loyal than you’d think considering the shows are nothing but trashy entertainment, but then again I watch and enjoy them as well. Pretty fun stuff to watch, though this current cycle is weak. But there will be more shows premiering in the fall or so, so hopefully those will be better.

So the question isn’t really “Why do most people watch on Sunday and Monday?” and more “Why does VH1 schedule its big shows on Sunday and Monday?”

  16. rob says:

Dont they show videos every morning ?

  17. Jim says:

Can you do one for Cartoon Network?

  18. ThundaPC says:

I second a request for Spike TV, especially with Ultimate Fighter wrapping up its season this Saturday.

  19. Julian says:

Spike TV is a horrible piece of work. I say A&E. MTV is also starting whole new summer programing starting at noon this week, would like to see that too.

  20. LEM says:

Yeah, new episodes of the ‘______ of Love’ shows and its various spin offs come on, on Sundays and Mondays. Daisy of Love on Sunday, Charm School Gottis Way and New York Goes to Work on Monday. So like Mega64 said, the question isn’t really “Why do most people watch on Sunday and Monday?” but more of why does VH1 schedule its big shows on Sunday and Monday of all days, lol.

Anyways, I love all of the VH1 reality shows…alot better than what MTV shows.

  21. ThundaPC says:

Spike TV is a good network.

  22. richard less says:

Rich Cronin, et. al. really want to know…

  23. pete5125 says:

What is Spike TV, other than Married W/Children morning reruns what do they air in any frequency to get a viewer, their schedule is different every week and I like most of the shows they own,(Star Trek DS9, Voyager, TNG, 7Days, Shield, Married W/C,etc.) even the movies etc. but I can never figure out their schedule

  24. RJ says:

How about TLC? All we ever hear about is Jon and Kate Plus 8. It would be nice to see how their other shows are doing.

  25. Bill Gorman says:

RJ, TLC was last week’s, click the link in the post.

  26. RJ says:

Didn’t even notice, oops. Thanks Bill! :)

  27. Jo Nathan says:

Can you put up the Numbers for LOGO, and Here! i would really be interested in seeing them. they’re probably really small because of the audiences they target, especially the latter one.

  28. angela says:

they usually only have new shows on Sunday and Monday, sometimes Thursday. It’s pretty much the same with MTV although they have the RW/RR franchise on Wednesday’s at 10:00pm. It’s always seemed strange to me because they’re putting up their best shows against each other. OTH they rerun their shows so often that it’s really not appointment viewing. Right now Daisy of Love (dating show — sleazy daters try to win Brett Michaels rejects heart), Charm School (Ricki Lake tries to make female dating show rejects into proper young ladies with $100,000 for winner), Brooke Knows Best (Brooke Hogan of wrestling father fame), Gotti’s way just finished, New York goes to work — don’t ask.

Are these compiled numbers? What is considered a hit. If you notice Grease the movie from 30 years ago is up there. MTV and VH-1 usually only invest in one movie at a time and show it over and over, maybe that’s why it has that many viewers?

Thanks for these numbers. I’ve actually been boycotting New York goes to work and Gotti’s way because i don’t want to encourage them, not that VH-1 has called me up to complain. ;-)
