Friday Ratings: Only 91 days to Dollhouse!

OK, there’s only 90 days until Dollhouse airs, but 91 days until the next Friday overnight report with Dollhouse ratings.  With nights like last night, believe me when I say that I really can’t wait.

Last night was a cross between repeats, “The Land of the Misfit Toys” and in some cases, both with The Goode Family, Surviving Suburbia, Samantha Who, Privileged, Everybody Hates Chris, The Game and Chopping Block all getting airtime.  Dateline NBC was the night’s most-watched program.

How bad was it?  It was so bad that I’m far more interested in knowing how a rebroadcast of the NCIS backdoor pilot for the NCIS: LA spinoff did on USA Network, but we’ll probably have to wait until Tuesday to find out.

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Christopher says:

i am not in the mood to watch re runs but i did watch Flashpoint and toinght i am going to watch Castle re run and Eil Stone

  2. romo says:

    NBC wins !!

  3. Chief says:

I’m officially calling shenanigans on Nielsen post-DTV transition. There has been a *much* larger drop since then that had been predicted right? ABC has fallen off the edge of the earth.

  4. Steve says:

    NBC (L) !

  5. ABCHasProblems says:

ABC is very stupid for keeping The Goode Family on @ 8:30. AFV reruns do well @ 8:00 on Fridays and would easily outperform new episodes of Surviving Suburbia/The Goode Family in the 18-49 demo. On the other hand, FOX is extremely stupid for canceling Don’t Forget the Lyrics with numbers like last night’s rerun. ABC should pick up Lyrics as they haven’t found a hit program in the past few years.

  6. Joss's Biggest Fan says:

How nice to see that my countdown to Dollhouse’s return is spreading like a communicable disease!

90 days til Dollhouse is back! Whee!

  7. VerySkeptical says:

I’m with Chief, I have little faith in the Nielsen system. I understand at least 2 affils pre-emted Goode Family for infomercials; that can’t be goode for ratings. When do DVR numbers become available? They should be a stronger gauge of summer viewership.

  8. Don says:

Robert, Don’t Forget the Lyrics was brand-new. The (R) symbol should not be there.

  9. people can be skeptical, and that’s fine and the jury is not yet out on the impact of DTV transition on ratings. But c’mon!!

ABC fell off the map because of what it aired. DTV transition and DVR numbers aren’t going to change that those shows don’t draw viewers. And if affiliates are preempting The Goode Family for an infomercial that says a lot of what those affiliates thought about that. BTW, to the degree anyone in those affiliates who was a Nielsen home was watching the infomercials, those #s would still get counted in the overnight numbers and won’t get factored out until the finals.

  10. djm says:

    I LOL’d at your title..

  11. Don, Berman had it listed as a repeat so I went with that. Unfortunately we don’t see the Friday reports ourselves usually until Monday.

  12. Lizardman says:

Robert, I DVR’d the NCIS two part spin-off Pilot myself and watched the repeat of The Music Man with Matthew Broderick on Ovation. Most of what was shown on broadcast last night was junk they are just getting out of the way. Lizard

  13. GEORGE 11 says:

cw reruns have a big increase!!!

  14. GEORGE 11 says:

the rerun of the game had the same demo with the new episode of good family and almost the same number of viewers!!

  15. Dani says:

I’m with Chief, I have little faith in the Nielsen system.(2)

  16. Don says:

Both FOX.com and thefutoncritic list Lyrics as new, the season finale.

  17. Anonymous says:

Our ABC affiliate (Buffalo) ran an infomercial instead of The Goode Family – probably a wise decision.

  18. Aaron says:

Yikes, 5.76 mil wins the night. The dog days of summer.

  19. AniMatsuri says:

I still chuckle at The Chopping Block. Before it first came out, promos went on and on how the featured chef was someone who made Gordan Ramsey cry. With these ratings, who’s crying now? ;)

  20. Kermonk says:

I find this countdown to Dollhouse quite unseemly – is Yvonne Strahovski on that show I ask you?

  21. Alex says:

Wait, USA is already airing repeats of this seasons NCIS?

  22. Boris says:

    Christopher says:

“i am not in the mood to watch re runs but i did watch Flashpoint and toinght i am going to watch Castle re run and Eil Stone”

Phew! Almost forgot to tape Eli Stone.

  23. Alex, just those 2 episodes last night — I think along the same lines of “it’s never too early to market” CBS wanted to go early (and perhaps often) with promoting the spin off, but I think the rest of the 2008-2009 season will wait for late September before beginning to air on USA. USA also somewhat heavily promoted on-air 3 episodes of NCIS that it ran from 8p-11p on Wednesday night describing them as “never before aired on USA”, but I believe those episodes were all from last season (or possibly even the season before).

  24. InsulinJunkie says:

    >>> ABC has fallen off the edge of the earth.

Although certainly not the only factor (especially considering OTA viewership is only 15-20% these days, I believe), having a couple of their O&Os being virtually impossible to recieve OTA doesn’t help. A couple of the stations have already petitioned the FCC for more power, and hopefully will get approved in short order.

Go figure – a VHF frequency, an urban enviroment, and a low-power signal (even for VHF) adds up to a greatly reduced coverage area. Couldn’t see that one coming!

  25. Kermonk: “is Yvonne Strahovski on that show I ask you?”

No, but Eliza is – and one of these days I suspect Summer Glau will be. I’ll take both of them along with Yvonne and Sarah – especially since Yvonne and Sarah won’t be back for MONTHS (unless I download season one of Chuck, I’ve got season two).

In the meantime, while I’m waiting for both shows, I’ll take Gabrielle Anwar and Anna Paquin on Burn Notice and True Blood, and Gina Bellman (THE sultriest babe on TV today) and Beth Riesgraf on Leverage.

One thing I like about Burn Notice is that the show is mostly a “procedural” but it has a nice serial overall story arc that they keep moving along a bit every week. Very well done.

  26. Budo says:

I’ll co-sign all that, RSH. Especially on Leverage – been a fan of Bellman since Coupling, but Riesgraf is just incredibly adorable.

  27. Christopher says:

lol why would peoole want to watch all this stuff when half the stuff is axed?

  28. ryan says:

ABC is just sad now. I mean a Privileged reepeat at 8 nearly beat The Goode Family. And the CW is crap, how does that happen?

  29. Douglas says:

Privileged numbers are very strong for a friday rerun of a cancelled show. I think CW is making a mistake. And btw i don’t like the show haha

  30. RJ says:

The CW should have kept The Game. Idiots.

  31. Aaron says:

^ CW and idiots go hand in hand.

  32. jay says:

I WILL watch Dollhouse when it comes on, I’ve decided. Reruns of Buffy allowed me to see just how well Whedon eventually uses his female leads and secondary characters – Sarah, Charisma Carpenter, Allyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg ( sp?) are a who’s who of attractive juvenile female actors from the late 1990’s. Elisha Dushkin could have the career Elizabeth Berkely didn’t quite have, if its done right, because her’s is one beautiful, aloof, domineering yet sweet persona. I had to hunker down when the feminists lobbed a few shots into the trenches, but I’m glad the show was renewed and look forward to seeing it for the first time.

  33. Anne says:

Numb3rs is the best! Seems it always gets the most viewers of the CBS friday night repeats.
So glad it’s coming back for season 6. Its numbers at the end of season five were going up, so maybe they’ll continue to go up next season!

  34. Edie Britt says:

I hope SaWho? wil do well on Thursday but im affraid not.

  35. puredieselbc says:

It’s a Friday night in the summer. What did you guys expect? People are out living their lives. Besides now that Dollhouse is renewed, I thought Nick C proved once and for all that your index doesn’t work for either Friday or Saturday nights.

  36. Mumbo says:

It’s pretty hard to gauge the impact of the DTV transition when it’s happened in the middle of weak summer programming, reruns, and burn-off.

And again, viewership has been dropping anyway, and I expect this fall to have lower numbers than fall 2008 regardless of anything else.
