Jon & Kate Minus 1.3 Million Falls Way Out Of Cable Top 20

Posted on 23 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

kate-and-kids
I will post True Blood numbers as soon as I see them. We don’t get premium cable data directly from Nielsen.

The week before Jon & Kate announced their divorce, Jon & Kate Plus 8 lost over 1.3 million viewers to fall to #68 with but 2.92  million average viewers. It will be interesting to see how far they pop back up this week with the divorce news boost. If we get any press release numbers early I will post them.

Update: Last night’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 drew 10.6 million average viewers, a record for the show.

Update 2: The show will be on hiatus until August 3.

In non-divorce news, USA Network is having a hot, hot summer. Royal Pains increased its viewership by nearly one million over last week and topped the cable network shows for the week. The net had 10 of the top 20 cable shows for the week.

The second outing of The Closer fell by over 1.5 million half a million viewers from last week’s premiere back into second place and 6.47 million viewers. WWE RAW was up by a little over 100,000 viewers in third. NASCAR’s Sprint Cup race from Sonoma (which caught me in its traffic jam on Saturday) was fourth with 5.79 million. Burn Notice held in 5th up about half a million viewers this week from last when it faced NBA Finals competition.

In Plain Sight fell by nearly half a million, down to #18,  and just 3.72 million viewers, just behind the premiere of TNT’s HawthoRNe at 3.827 million.

For the second week in a row, SpongeBob did not make the top twenty.  The yellow and porous one’s best outing was #23 with 3.5 million. Fear not, he is just biding his time while the human powered shows have their time in the sun. NCIS was again strong on cable (as on broadcast) with five airings in the top twenty.

Robert is on hiatus until late July, I am on my own till then, so we will not be handling Twitter (or other) requests for ala carte show numbers.

  1. Drew says:

I’m surprised not to see CI in the top 20. Does anyone know where it placed or are these just early numbers?

  2. Bill Gorman says:

L&O:CI was #33 with 3.426 m, and that’s my last request! These are final numbers.

  3. Andy says:

Hey Bill.. can you tell me were Tues nights Sponge Bob ans I Carly landed…I need to tell my little girl!~!!!…

    Opps refer to comment above~

  4. Number Cruncher says:

1 site checked, six more to go. It’s going to be a long week.

  5. Sad you guys are having to make so many cuts. Can you no longer list the times the top 20 shows aired?

  6. Andy says:

Does this mean you have an employment opportunity? I’ll write this Twitter crap. All I desire is National Fame!!!

  7. Kara says:

Looks like Sunday night got hit overall with In Plain Sight dropping to #18 and other shows like L&O: Criminal Intent and Army Wives falling out of the top 20.

Would Father’s Day have that much of an impact on TV viewing?

  8. Bill Gorman says:

Nick and more, times are fine, in taking over for Robert on this I just forgot them. They are included now.

  9. rich says:

god l&o ci was a great show sunday night as was in plain sight i do not get it

  10. Fringefan says:

    How did True Blood do?

  11. Fringefan says:

Ok I saw the notice about True Blood

  12. Victor Hugo G. Soares says:

Bill, the season premeire of The Closer was 7.183 viewrs and second episode make 6.469..so losses just 0.714 viewers and not fell over 1.5 million viewers,ok!

  13. ForTheCloser says:

“The second outing of The Closer fell by over 1.5 million viewers from last week’s premiere back into second place and 6.47 million viewers.”

    First episode – 7.14 million
    Second episode – 6.47 million

    7.14 – 6.47 = 0.67

    So that’s not 1.5 million viewers less, it’s 670 000 viewers less.

  14. Drew says:

Thanks for the CI numbers. Sorry if I bothered you Bill.

  15. TomSD says:

Do the iCarlys listed are reruns?

  16. DramaX says:

I just want to know the Greek finale number….please…!!!

  17. Bill Gorman says:

Victor, bad subtraction on my part! Fixed.

  18. huddy80 says:

It is kind of nice to see that people just don’t care anymore about the rocky marriage that is Jon & Kate Gosselin. The show was good when it focused on the children, as that was the premise of the show, but as soon as it started involving Jon & Kate’s mess, it started to lose a lot of creditbility. And shame on Jon & Kate for deciding to continue on doing the show even though they will be divorcing. Can anyone say exploitation? Those poor kids.

  19. Victor Hugo G. Soares says:

    Bill, that’s ok!

  20. huddy80 says:

No surprise to see that Royal Pains and The Closer were the top two cable shows of the week. What is kind of surprising is that as soon as Donald Trump buys WWE Entertainment, wrestling is considered cool again.

  21. Jon says:

USA are having a great summer with Burn Notice and Royal Pains doing well although it must be concerning that NCIS repeats are beating orignal episodes of Law and Order: CI and In Plain Sight but I guess Father’s Day had an impact.

  22. Bill Gorman says:

huddy80, Trump bought nothing (we were I was fooled too), and WWE RAW ratings have always been near the top for cable primetime shows.

  23. star title says:

    NCIS is a monster

  24. RJ says:

I watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 last night, and it was quite sad. I cant believe they are actually getting a divorce. I’m guessing about 5-10 million people watched the episode. Once things cool down and the show focuses on the kids again, I’m guessing numbers will be around 3 million viewers.

  25. Mary says:

Well it looks like the shows going on hiatus for a little while. Guess TLC will have to find something else to air

    http://omg.yahoo.com/news/jon-kate-plus-8-on-hiatus-until-august/24211?nc

Oh god hope CI gets renewed, crosses fingers.

  26. michael says:

anyone know how that “so you think you can dance” – “biggest loser” RIP OFF “dance your ass off” did?

  27. huddy80 says:

@ Bill…Really? Do you know what happened with Trump and that? And thank you, I did not know that WWE got that many viewers in the past. I just looked up previous numbers and my jaw dropped! Way to go, WWE!

  28. as for Trump, to paraphrase the old Tonto joke, “What you mean ‘we’, Kemosabe?” ;-) I was not fooled!

As for NCIS, those NCIS on Wednesday did about 33% better than the best NCIS of the previous week, but they were all episodes that had never aired on USA before (and USA Network promoted that a bit on air). Friday’s rebroadcast of the 2 part NCIS backdoor spinoff for NCIS: Los Angeles from the most recent season also did well, especially considering that came together at the last moment and wasn’t promoted on air way ahead of time.

  29. Erik says:

Grr whats taking the True Blood numbers so long! Hurry up Nielsen/HBO or whoever releases them. I’m “dying” to know, get it? haha :)

  30. Alex S. says:

It was just announced on Yahoo! that “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ is officially on hiatus and the next new episode won’t air until August.

I’m not surprised by the dip in the ratings for the show; I’m not sure if anybody would think a cable reality show could sustain 9.8 million viewers a week…

4, 3, and 2.92 million viewers an episode is definitely nothing to sneeze at for a cable show and the show is still a huge success.

  31. Mike says:

Was looking for last night’s numbers here, but found it on radaronline.com –

“Divorce, it turns out, is very, very good for Jon & Kate Plus 8 ratings. The TLC series pulled in a record-setting 10.6 million viewers to the June 22 episode where the couple announced their separation.”

  32. Alex S. says:

“The TLC series pulled in a record-setting 10.6 million viewers”

That number is huge; obviously America is still very much interested in this family…

  33. Number Cruncher says:

I was so hoping this would not happen but unfortunately it did. 10.6 million is absulutely unreal and I just can not understand the fascination with these people.

    http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/06/tlc-jon-kate-divorce-ratings.html

  34. Number Cruncher says:

Oh darn. 2 others beat me to it. However there are Sectet Life of the American Teenager ratings in that article too. 4.7 million is quite impressive.

  35. mtgolflady says:

I think this means CMT beat the networks in ratings last Tuesday night.

    http://www.multichannel.com/article/295373-CMT_Music_Awards_Sounds_Strong_Ratings_Note.php

  36. Tre says:

Oh darn!, so there is no way i can see all shows and rating on cable without paying?

  37. Drew says:

Tre: Nope, sorry. One of the two mods said there was 13,000 shows tracked, and I’d imagine it’s a pretty penny to get the data.

  38. LJ says:

I think we’ve reached the point in the train wreck where people just want to look away. It’s got to be extremely uncomfortable to watch these days from what I’m reading about the show.

  39. Alex says:

I wish more people would watch In Plain Sight.

Royal Pains at the top of this list surprises me, I’m really surprised how big (cable wise) this show has been.

  40. Corey3rd says:

what last night’s episode showed is that Jon has zero desire to try to get things back on track with his wife. He’s wearing the stupid fractured skull t-shirt and the diamond earrings. Now he’s pricing apartments at a Trump Tower. He’s thinking he’s a rock star with some real amazing talent instead of a guy who invitroed his way to fame.

He made me feel bad for Kate having to put up with him – which is a pretty hard thing to do.

And wasn’t that low ranking episode the visit from the Orange County Chopper guys? The entire episode was laid out in the 30 second trailer. The family needed more adventures instead of just becoming a QVC informercial or what star is at our door.

  41. Joe says:

I am curious to see how the first ever commercial free Monday Night RAW did last night I watched it and was very entertained but the Donald Trump thing did not last long as Vince McMahon bought back RAW (in Storyline of course :) for double what Donald Trump gave for it so The Donald Experiment on RAW lasted all of two weeks

This Jon & Kate Plus 8 divorce thing is a joke I mean wasn’t this show supposed to be about the kids? Now it’s about their fame seeking jokes of parents I can’t believe 10.6 million people watched that garbage but atleast the show will fall flat again unless they pull out another ratings stunt

  42. Tina says:

lol at 3 “iCarly” reruns charting this week, when the last new episode missed the top 20 all together. Way to rebound!

  43. Christopher says:

    i whaced IN Plain Sight

  44. Christopher says:

good to see HAWTHORNE in there hope the ratings go up and i do think Fathers days had an affect on ratings just like Mothers day had the same affect on ratings on network tv

  45. tdot says:

Mary, Jon and Kate Plus 8 will continue to produce episodes
Segments will be done with Jon and Kate separately
As Kate said, “The show must go on”
TLC made a massive 40 episode order for Season 5 so….
we’ve got many more weeks of Kate left

  46. Christopher says:

i wonder what the dvr numbers look like for the summer

  47. Brian D says:

I’m not sure what’s more sad the fact that this show was ever on TV to begin with or the fact that there was a sky rocketing ratings surge post divorce news. After all news has been going on about their troubles for the last few months and now the ratings surge occurs.

  48. Hot Pocket says:

WOW! got a huge number last night with Trump they got a 4.5 cable rating which is the highest since Monday February 6, 2006 for Raw. A 4.8 in the second hour. That should be close to 7 million viewers.

USA is on a freakin’ role.

  49. Someone who posts says:

How did The Closer did? Because that’s I watched instead of this stupid family.

  50. Christopher says:

Someone who i also watch the Closer do dont want to watch someone who needs to go on tv and have there life turn to shit how did the close do in the ratings?

  51. there you have it folks, our readers.

    ::sigh::

  52. Number Cruncher says:

The second episode of True Blood got 3.4 million viewers since there are a couple people here who wanted to know.

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2009-06-23-nielsens-analysis_N.htm

  53. Number Cruncher says:

The Greek finale numbers are also in that article too (745,000 thousand).

  54. Brian D says:

Kind of sad and lazy Robert that people can’t read the ratings numbers Bill was nice enough to post for us before asking what a show did that is on the list.

If you guys need any help I’m more then willing and I’m sure others are too to help why people are on vacation

  55. Bill Gorman says:

Brian D, thanks for the offer, but I think we’re covered.

Number Cruncher, thanks for the USA Today link.

  56. Number Cruncher says:

    You’re welcome.

  57. Holly says:

So…Is the yellow, porous one biding his time before returning with an overpowering reign of sponginess, or is he fading into obscurity only to be seen when all else is in reruns (or NCIS stops airing on USA)? How long until that midnight airing of That’s So Raven beats the top rated Spongebob episode? Do we want to live in a world where Spongebob does not reign supreme in the cable top 20?

  58. Cody says:

I HOPE NO ONE IS WATCHING JON AND KATE WHEN IT COMES BACK THE WAY THEY ARE TREATING THOSE KIDS ALLOWING ALL AMERICA TO WATCH THEM DIVORCE AND THE PAIN OF THAT IS HORRIBLE

  59. ScarecrowMrsKing says:

I am so happy all my favorite shows are in the top 20. WTG USA and TNT. It is going to be a great summer. Qusetion how are the recorded shows included in the ratings?

  60. Holly says:

ScarecrowMrsKing, The numbers reported in this list (for cable) and in the daily posts (for broadcast) include all live viewing and same day DVR viewing (until 3 am the next morning) (Live+SD). A later list (we only see the broadcast) has all DVR viewing within 7 days (Live+7). In addition, the networks and advertising companies see a C3 rating, which is all commercial viewing in the first three days. That was the compromise when the nets wanted to use Live+7 to set ad prices and advertisers wanted to just use Live. We’ve only seen those numbers a couple of times and the results appeared to be roughly equivalent to the Live+SD. I’m quite certain that the networks and advertising companies have access to the C3 and Live+7 ratings for cable, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen it.

  61. Stephany says:

Darn, 2 weeks in a row of no SpongeBob on the top 20’s? I can’t belive it! I hope he picks up soon, specially since the show’s 10th anniversary celebration is coming on July 17th!

  62. David4 says:

Once the show’s ratings drop to 3 million again I’m sure they will announce they will try to solve their issues.

Kate is the worst mother on the face of the earth.

  63. J.Norman says:

    Cody,
I’m afraid that Jon and Kate are going nowhere. If the show can maintain even 30% of last nights ratings on a consistent basis, it will be around as long as people want to bitch about it.
The month hiatus is simply to allow planning for how to best maintain viewer support for this new (and ratings improved) story line. Jon and Kate will (would) be pushing Liberace out of the way on the way to the bank.
I think the new show will include divorce lawyers, Jon’s New York “good friend”., and Kate’s dinner dates with the bodyguard. But first they have to decide on the best way to present the new story line.
Let’s all face it. This is much more entertaining than watching the kids ride tricyles in the front yard, and running up and down stairs

  64. RayJay101 says:

Guys, get ready to see Jon and Kate Plus 8 back up on the list.

“Monday night’s massively hyped episode of Jon & Kate Plus Eight — in which the Gosselins announced their plans to divorce — attracted a whopping 10.6 million viewers, the largest audience ever for the TLC show.”

  65. tyrone says:

I ran into Mark Berman at an all you can eat Chinese buffet restaurant. That bloated pig who claims to be a TV insider…yeah right and I’m Allan Luden…well Bloated Mark made 8 trips to the buffet table…each time piling generous helpings of slop onto his plate. He’s even more gruesome in person. On the way out, I stopped by his table and informed him that he was today’s “Loser” on my list.

  66. sigurdursveinn says:

hey i don’t know if you’re taking requests about shows but if you do can you tell me how rescue me did?

  67. Dylan says:

I have a question for Bill or Robert or whoever. Was this past Monday ( June 22nd,2009) the biggest Monday Night in history of cable? If it is not it has to be close…

The Closer on TNT- 6.6 mill viewers

WWE RAW (Trump) on USA commericial Free- 6.8 million viewers

Jon and Kate Plus 8 Divorce on TLC- 10.6 million viewers

Monday Nights are turning out to be the biggest in cable!

  68. VlogHog says:

10.6 million for Jon And Kate. People at my job who never heard or mentioned Jon, Kate or TLC, watched this show Monday night.

What will they do next “season”?

  69. rick says:

how did weeds go? any ratings?

  70. Bad Robot ! says:

Will the name of the JK8 show be changed to “1/2 Jon and 1/2 Kate plus 8 future Danny Bonaduce’s”? When they are all over 18 they can be on “Celebrity Rehab” at the same time.

It should be against the law to use children under 18 in unscripted shows where cameras are everywhere. Its like frying ants with a magnifying glass. If adults want to do this sort of thing, let them. Good to see ratings tanked from the nearly 10 million a month ago. Hopefully the show will be terminated forever. Never saw too much of it except as clips on The Soup, but that was enough to see how screwed up these 2 alleged parents are.

  71. gustavo says:

Can someone tell me;how many viewers has RESCUE ME.

  72. derek says:

So without Robert we won’t get our weekly top 20?

  73. Drew says:

I think what Bill’s saying is that he’ll post the top twenty, but that’s it. No requests at all.
