Jon & Kate Plus 8 Breaks Records, Draws 10.6 Million

Posted on 23 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

Our friend James Hibberd is out with Monday’s numbers for the break-up episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8. With the announcement that the show is going on hiatus until August that record will stand for a while, perhaps for good.

Monday’s breakup episode of TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ was the most-watched episode of the show ever with 10.6 million viewers.

James has lots more at The Live Feed.

And THR.com (although not clear if it was James or not) definitely had the best headline with “Jon minus Kate Equals 10.6 million”.

  1. QW says:

That’s just an amazing number . . . though I’m guessing it will be the series high, because where could the show go that would top a divorce announcement?

  2. RJ says:

TLC can also promote it BIG like they did with this announcement.
I’m sure the tabloids will be all over it as well.
It wont go near 10 million again, but it could come back at 5-6 million.
I applaud TLC for their decision to take a hiatus on the show. :)

  3. Christopher says:

what a sad world we live in

  4. RJ says:

    QW,
I bet the ratings could go higher if one of them starts dating. :o

  5. Alex says:

I promise you that right now everyone at TLC is hoping and wishing that this divorce gets ugly because that’s the only way you sustain numbers at this level. Everyone will tune in for a car crash and the mud slinging that goes hand-in-hand with a messy divorce would be like a dream come true for TLC. Of course there’s also the bigger question of how they’d continue the show with a divorce and whether they can keep the name Jon & Kate Plus 8.

  6. Joe says:

This Jon & Kate Plus 8 divorce thing is a joke I mean wasn’t this show supposed to be about the kids? Now it’s about their fame seeking jokes of parents I can’t believe 10.6 million people watched that garbage but atleast the show will fall flat again unless they pull out another ratings stunt

I am curious to see how the first ever commercial free Monday Night RAW did last night I watched it and was very entertained but the Donald Trump thing did not last long as Vince McMahon bought back RAW (in Storyline of course for double what Donald Trump gave for it so The Donald Experiment on RAW lasted all of two weeks

  7. Oliver says:

I would agree with Alex because everyone around me wants to watch the train wreck. For the show, all I want to say is that I have very high standard for the society now I am disappointed.

  8. Joe R says:

It is all down hill from this. It probably will get a record LOW by the end of the season

  9. Corey3rd says:

it’s an event – not merely an episode.

there should be an award given to Jon and Kate for promoting Crooked Houses. They plugged the living daylights out of that company.

  10. Nick C says:

Didn’t we see this before in AMERICAN FAMILY? This is so 1972…

  11. so apparently nobody does want to see a happy family

Commercial free is the way forward apparently – The second hour of the show averaged in the region of 7.3 million viewers and 4.8. The first hour scored a 4.2 although I’m not sure how many viewers that equates to but its well up on the numbers they’ve been pulling for the past three years. Apparently this week is going to be a BIG week for cable.

  13. Alex says:

EDIT – And the first hour of Raw scored in the region of 6.3 million viewers, which probably won’t be enough to beat The Closer or Royal Pains.

  14. Corey3rd says:

there are about two couples that have stayed together after the reality cameras left their house – The Osbournes – although that could be because Ozzy’s too messed up to notice. Can’t think of the second, but there should be.

  15. Mike G. says:

Jon & Kate will get higher ratings when they have the “getting back together episode.” That will be next season.

  16. Bill Gorman says:

Mike G., Perhaps, but first we have to have the “screaming at each other” and “red faced crying” episodes. ;)

  17. fred says:

divorce court and a custody battle would make 15 million viewers (easily) for the verdict and interesting television

  18. j says:

OH MY EFFIN’ GOSH. According to EW (http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/06/jon-and-kate-ratings.html), the show got 6.5 MILLION 18-49.

That’s higher than the averages of practically every show on broadcast TV this season. I had no idea how high a % of the show’s viewers were in the demo. That’s even more amazing than hitting over 10 million.

  19. Jeremy says:

The show’s got massive buzz right now, thus the ratings. But wouldn’t this also be a record for TLC in general?

  20. Bill Gorman says:

6.5 million adults 18-49 is gigantic for anything on cable. We don’t have good historical data on individual cable shows, but my guess is that number hasn’t been exceeded by many non-sports, non-special event cable shows to date.

For comparison, 6.5 million puts you in the broadcast top 20 for 18-49 every week of the regular season, and in the top 10 most weeks.

  21. Linda says:

I am sorry that they are pulling the show. I love the kids * see the marriage as “reality in the real world”. Although Kate can be snappy, so could Jon. After last night’s viewing, I realized that Kate being a strong woman is what has held the family together. From her words, she shows the love and devotion to the family. She had to be organized to have survived. Jon, who has NO personality, has problems that he is trying to pass onto Kate. His conversation was clearly showed his selfish, whinny character “what is best for Me …and my kids”, and poor me, “I am only 32 with 8 kids”. Me is his major concern is “Po me” He became angry at Kate as he isn’t man enough to fess up to his infidelities. The “Po’ me, Jon” had time with 8 children to go out partying,is feeling sorry for himself that he is strapped with 8 beautiful children. Keep the show going but without “Po’ me Jon”. He is too stupid to realize the 23 yr. is only interested in his kids money. JUST CUT HIM ON THE SHOW

  22. Pam says:

Kate is so caught up in the money (surely she has made enough money she could quit the show and just stay at home with her kids) but the money means everything to her so she can fly here and there whenever she wants. She could stay at home and write her books and make money off of that. I heard she asks $20.00 per autograph (who does she thinks she is)? And Jon I felt sorry for, but he is going through male menapause, he is only 32 years old boo hoo, YOU HAVE 8 KIDS WHO NEED YOU. Kate is so bossy with Jon, no wonder he left. But I feel that they should have seeked counselling through the church, those kids are the ones that are going to pay for their selfishness. Jon is alot better looking than her body guard and that girl that’s a shool teachers is just plain looking. THE GRASS ISN’T GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE!!!!!!! I guess they can always buy the kids happiness with material things. Everything on this earth is going to be left behind incase they forgot the Bible….
