UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – June 25, 2009 – NBC kicks off the Fall 2009 season on Monday, September 14 with the highly anticipated primetime debut of “The Jay Leno Show” (10-11 p.m. ET/9-10 p.m. CT), followed by the premiere of the network’s marquee night of comedy on Thursday, September 17, as “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday” and new series “Community” join “Parks and Recreation” and Emmy winner “The Office.”
NBC’s dramas will premiere with a two-hour “Heroes” on Monday, September 21 (8-10 p.m. ET), the compelling family drama “Parenthood” premieres on Wednesday, September 23 (8-9 p.m. ET) leading into “Law & Order: SVU” (9-10 p.m. ET). The new high-octane “Trauma” will premiere the following Monday, September 28 (9-10 p.m. ET).
Emmy winner “30 Rock” returns to the Thursday comedy line-up on October 15 (9:30-10 p.m. ET).
In addition, “Saturday Night Live” returns for its 35th season on September 26 (11:30 p.m.-1:00 a.m.).
The announcement was made by Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.
“NBC is proud to present more hours of comedy programming this fall than any other network with the ‘The Jay Leno Show’ each night at 10 p.m. and ‘Community’ joining the award-winning Thursday line-up,” said Silverman. “We’re also excited about adding two new dramas to our strong slate of quality returning shows.”
“The Jay Leno Show,” the first-ever entertainment program to be stripped across primetime on broadcast network television, launches on Monday, September 14 (10-11 p.m. ET) and will showcase many of the features that have made Leno America’s late-night leader for more than a dozen years.
On Tuesday, September 15 (8-10 p.m.), “The Biggest Loser” returns with all new two-hour episodes, featuring more inspiration and real-life drama as this season’s contestants challenge themselves to reach their weight-loss goals.
Thursday is comedy night on NBC with the only live comedy show between 8-10 p.m. on any network, “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday,” kicking off the night (8-8:30 p.m. ET) beginning September 17, followed by “Parks and Recreation” (8:30-9 p.m. ET), “The Office” (9-9:30 p.m. ET) and new comedy “Community” (9:30-10 p.m. ET) from Emmy winners Joe and Anthony Russo (”Arrested Development”). “Community” focuses on a band of community college misfits, led by a fast-talking lawyer (Joel McHale, “The Soup”), who form a study group and end up learning more about themselves than their coursework.
On October 8, “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday” will exit the 8 p.m. slot and “Community” will shift to the earlier time period, followed by “Parks and Recreation” (8:30-9 p.m. ET). A one-hour episode of “The Office” will air from 9-10 p.m. ET.
On October 15, Emmy winner “30 Rock” will launch its fourth season in the show’s regular slot on Thursdays, 9:30-10 p.m. ET.
NBC’s dramas return with a two-hour episode of viewer favorite “Heroes” (8-10 p.m. ET) on Monday, September 21. The following Monday, September 28, “Heroes” will continue in its 8 p.m. time period followed by “Trauma” (9-10 p.m. ET), the new adrenalin-rush action drama from executive producer Peter Berg (”Friday Night Lights”) that tracks a team of first-responder paramedics from San Francisco General as they face extreme conditions to save the lives of strangers and give meaning to their own in the process.
“Parenthood,” from Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and writer/executive producer Jason Katims (”Friday Night Lights”), premieres on Wednesday, September 23 (8-9 p.m. ET). The series, which features an all-star cast including Peter Krause, Maura Tierney, Dax Shepard, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, Monica Potter and Erika Christensen, tells the story of four grown siblings sharing the headaches, heartaches and unexpected joys of being a parent. Following “Parenthood” on Wednesdays is “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (9-10 p.m. ET), beginning its eleventh season on September 23.
Fridays, beginning September 25, the venerable “Law & Order” (8-9 p.m. ET) returns for a record 20th season, followed by the acclaimed drama “Southland” (9-10 p.m. ET).
Beginning September 26, Saturdays in primetime will be a showcase for “Dateline NBC” (8-9 p.m. ET) and encore presentations of “Trauma” (9-10 p.m. ET) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (10-11 p.m. ET).
“Football Night in America” (7-8:15 p.m. ET) and “NBC Sunday Night Football” (8:15-11 p.m.) – the number one show of the fall – will return on Sundays, beginning September 13 with a classic match-up: the Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers.

NBC’S UNRIVALED THURSDAY NIGHT OF COMEDY
wow.
interesting…I was under the impression that 30 Rock was being held for mid-season.
Looks good. CBS does look more interesting but I’m loyal to NBC!
I know they said Chuck wouldn’t be back until next year, but I was still hoping… *sigh*
I think FOX wants to go after NBC some more. So You Think You Can Dance is scheduled to be broadcast on Tuesdays, right? That’s 2 big reality TV competitions facing off. Wonder which one’s going to win…
GodfatherSJP, agreed, I think the Tuesday reality face off of SYTYCD, Dancing With The Stars and Biggest Loser will be one of the more interesting battles (for numbers) this fall.
OMG, if they dare cancel CHUCK i will die, i just a few weeks ago got into chuck and watched both season and that show is absolutely amazing! its to good of a show to let go
So what is leading into Leno’s premiere on 9/14??
Am I reading this wrong, or is the lead-in for the Leno show just some episode of L&O:CI that will have aired months before on USA? Yeesh.
-
And yes, the ratings out of Double Tuesdays- Dance/Dance, Dancing/Dancing, Loser/Loser, NCIS/NCIS, 90210/90211- will be one of the more interesting storylines for Fall. I suspect NCIS continues to grow in total viewers. Demo, who knows. (Other candidates: how Flashforward does in front of the Rhimes block, how Fringe does in the steel-cage match that is Thursdays 9pm, and if more than three hours of NBC’s schedule can average above a 2.5 (Loser/Loser/SVU).
Also, Trauma’s Saturday encore premiere date is listed as happening before the first episode airs
Exactly one main show to watch, Heroes. Chuck will be on mid season, which will be the only other nbc show I watch. I tell ya from the looks of it there is no good broadcast television anymore. The rest of the shows I could care less about. It’s hard to watch 30 minute series because they always hit oddball times so I do not bother and never will. Even if they are good series they are not worth the effort. And good grief, when will they kill off some of these crappy law and orders, csi’s, cop shows, law shows, doctor shows, they are all getting old!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Heroes is the only one on the list that I watch.
I’ll watch Thursday’s block of comedy.. and also looking forward to Parenthood.
That’s about it
With any luck, the unholy trifecta of SYTYCD/Dancing w/Stars/Biggest Loser will resolve itself like the Mexican standoff at the end of ‘Reservoir Dogs’.
I agree that the Tuesday-reality-battle is going to be awfully interesting.
But judging by the softening numbers for SYTYCD, I think Fox is going to end up being the big loser – DWTS should do its usual massive total viewers, and BL will probably squeak by in the demos. SYTYCD is gonna be left in the dust I think.
excited for Heroes’ return, have been reading good things about what’s coming. Also I plan on checking out Community, though online until it moves to 8, I have to watch Fringe!
No, Tom. Unfortunately, you ARE reading that right. I double checked on another website I frequent, and unless NBC is planning something “special” that night, an encore episode (most likely the season finale) of Criminal Intent will be the lead-in for the premiere of Jay. Kind of sad, don’t you think, especially when NBC is putting all their money on Jay doing well?
I think with the success of The Biggest Loser in the past few years, it should fare better than SYTYCD, but we’ll see.
Has ABC’s Sch. came out yet, anyone?
No ABC premiere dates have been announced. It’s the alzheimer’s I tell you!You can see all the 2009-10 broadcast TV schedule information here
Bill, I am positive it has, I distinctly recall B & S, PP, & Eastwick not being listed though.
ABC has announced MOST but not a few of their shows:
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/06/09/abc-fall-schedule-premiere-dates/20406
(didn’t get tagged in the above link…edit: but has been now)
Trauma’s Saturday encore premiere date is listed as happening before the first episode airs. Is that your mistake? or NBC’s?
Steve, that’s NBC’s continued commitment to excellence.
Me too, Kathy B. I Hva ebeen watching Heroes since season one episode 1
I agree
Heroes is the main thing here ot watch! Cant’ wait for : 4×01 – Orientacion and 4×02 – Jump, Push, Fall!
Isnt really the thursday nfl game sept 10 the premiere of snf:
a) they even say its a “special thursday edition of snf”.
b) they count that game in the overall season rating of snf.
I just do not see ever watching Leno at the early time. I TIVO most all the shows I watch from earlier hours, but I never record talk shows. I still do not understand the only hour I really watch TV taken up by Leno.
I suppose nobody cares since I don’t live in the US, but Heroes is still the only show that I watch which is on NBC. I still have to find a way to view Chuck to give it a real chance, and the only mid-season show I’ll give a shot at is Day One.
Hilariously, all the returning shows I watch (or used to watch) are still on Monday. It’s a good thing for me that I don’t have to choose ^^
Looks like the September 21st will be really interesting rating-wise. Anyone thinks that 2 hour Heroes-premiere sounds like a hit or miss shot? It’s gonna be competing against DWTS, a 2 hour House premiere (I’m still hesitating to give it a shot) and all of the CBS sitcoms (3 being safe choices rating-wise, and one who could eventually gather curious).
So if it’s ratings aren’t good (from the start), or if the quality isn’t good (although if the quality goes down, I expect it to do it a bit later) leading viewer to tune off mid-premiere, doesn’t it basicly damage Heroes as a lead-in for Trauma ? Premiering Trauma the same day would have made sense to me (although I don’t know anything about ratings so I’ll just shut up :>)
ps : We know that Global (Canada) will be airing Heroes on Sunday, but do anyone know if NBC is gonna be stupid enough to let it air a day before (things like that happened before)? I suppose they don’t want their network’s ratings down but since they seem to want to kill off Heroes slowly…
great i will be on ABC or Cbs at 10 pm
Here’s an Idea for a reality show:
NIGHTMARE!:
A behind the scenes look at a network that schedules a talk show for ten p.m..
Tuesday Sept. 15:
AxxKixxONE(AK1):”Leno was GREAT last night!”
AxxKixxTwo(AK2):”Boss where do you get such brilliant Ideas?”
BenSilverman(BS):”Enough! Enough! Let’s look at the numbers….Holy sweet baby Jesus! Did they forget to turn on the tranmitters? Que up the “Law&Orders”! Do we have any left over “Knight Riders”? Maybe we can get the rights to old “Dharma and Gregs”! Do we still own “The Cosby Show”? Wait, we’ll combine “America”s Got Talent” and “The Biggest Loser” and call it “America’s Biggest Singing Losers”!
@Pas
A few years ago, NBC would have definitely told Global NO about the Sunday airing of Heroes…but considering the weak ratings + rising costs, I don’t think NBC can afford to lose such a lucrative deal with Global.
I wasn’t referring to the Sunday itself. Of course NBC can’t affor to lose that kind of deal. I was more wondering if they would let Global air Heroes one day before, opposite to 6 days later. That happened before (i.e. I think a season of “The Shield” aired in France before it was in the US, but I’d have to check that).
That could be bad for NBC’s ratings, because I wouldn’t surprised a chunk of the audience would torrent the episode either because they can’t wait to watch it, or others because that would allow them to watch (an)other show(s) on Monday night.
A two hour return for Heroes? That has disaster written all over it.
Pas, they already agreed to the deal so I’m sure NBC knows what they’re getting themselves into.
Really nothing here that interests me.
I may tune into Heroes to see if it turns out to be as bad was we are hearing, but nothing else for me until the Mid-Season shows like Chuck start up.
I’ll be watching watching Thursdays comedy block, Parenthood, and Chuck when it comes back. Everything else is crap.
Wow, other than Sunday Night Football, I don’t think I’m going to tune into NBC at all until midseason.
The only show there I would watch is Heros, but after last season I don’t think I am going to continue to watch. I would have stopped watching last year, but with chuck coming on before I was already in front of the TV anyway.
NBC considers that it has an “UNRIVALED THURSDAY NIGHT OF COMEDY”?
I’d be very interested in what they thought competition might be!.
I can’t stand the SNL Weekend Update Thursday…its like a 4th-rate Daily Show. Maybe if it was Tina Fey & Fallon it could work…but not now. Just give us 30 Rock!
Since I stopped watching HEROES after it declined in the second season and just got awful during the third (which was unfortunate, because it started off so good), and since I never got into the “Thursday Night Comedy Block,” I guess I won’t be clicking channel 5 (NBC Chicago) on my remote until CHUCK returns in March. Unless, of course, there starts to be a lot of chatter on TVBTN about one of the new Fall shows on NBC actually being worth watching.
Southland, Community, Parenthood and sometimes Leno will be the shows I tune in to
Does anyone know what happened to the so called Office “spinoff” that was supposed to be coming? At one point there was going to be a back door spinoff with a character from the Office. I haven’t heard anything about that in over a year.
E the Office spin-off became Parks & Recreation somewhere along the development process.
Biggest Loser will do better than SYTYCD, depends on who the ’stars’ are on DWTS as to how well they’ll do. Jay will be just fine at 10.
Thanks Alex.
Damn. I hate that show, PARKS AND RECREATION. I was hoping the Office would spin off with one of the characters from the show.
All, while we love to tout the nightly “battles”, I think it’s unlikely the Fox thinks it can “win” on Tuesday next fall. Their objective is almost certainly to simply improve on what was a bad situation (fall Tuesday’s) in past seasons.
An example would be what Fox did on Thursday this spring. The Bones/Hell’s Kitchen combo never “won” against first run competition, but it was a big improvement on last season’s Thursday results for Fox.
“Highly Anticipated Jay Leno Show”? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
MM, It’s “The New Hit Show Everybody’s Talking About”. You heard it here first!
Ill tune into 100 Questions, Heroes, The Biggest Loser, and maybe Parenthood ill have to give it a try.
Bill Gorman, For fall shows that have like 13 episodes do most of them run like september to december and they are done for a season? What happend to having like September to May like Smallville, Supernatural, Desperate Housewives, brothers and Sisters etc.
Also im kinda happy this year because usually a lot of shows i like get canceled but this year only one did Surviving Suburbia this year a lot of shows i like r being renewed =D.
The only new series on nbc im checking out are NCIS: LA , Community, and midseason show Day One. I can say one thing the Three Rivers (cbs new series) show has a bad chance of getting renewed because its up against Desperate Housewives and Castle’s (ABC show on season 2) season premiere will be up against Heroes 2 hour season premiere I GOT ONE WORD!! UNFAIR!!
I still don’t get why Parenthood is the lead-in to SVU…
Brian, you might wanna change the channel if u want to watch NCIS:LA, that’s on CBS, right after the original NCIS
There’s no point in listing “Community” on the schedule above considering it’ll be gone by Episode 3. Another NBC dramedy that’s successful at neither.
I’ll only be watching Community and Parenthood.
“NBC is proud as a peacock, bringing you only the most quality entertainment from only the most talented actors and showrunners. NBC this fall will win over millions of new American television viewers, and increase overall ratings from last season’s amazing success. This will be a feat that will be difficult to do, but NBC is optimistic that it can accomplish this goal. NBC is one of the oldest broadcast networks in existence, but their entertainment president is full of youth and genius. NBC looks forward to the fall, with its feathers in full erectness and vividness, because they are confident in the programming decisions that were made this past May.”
– Independent spokesperson Sven Goldenmann
i dont watch anything on nbc, jeez, i might try COMMUNITY, just cuz im looking for a new comedy to laugh at, however i have a feeling COMMUNITY wont get the job done…sigh
God everything on NBC is horrible. When a network starts calling SOuthland a hit, theres deffinitly something wrong. Heroes used to be so good now i wont be watching that because of how bad the last season was though. The only good programming on NBC is Chuck and football.
I’m looking forward to The Office but I could care less about anything else. I might be willing to check out Community, I guess. Why are they starting 30 Rock so late?
I’m sick of 30 Rock starting late every year. Nobody is going to watch SNL Weekend Update Thursday in a non-Election year anyways, why not just start 30 Rock on time with the rest of the shows?
