Jackson Tribute BET Awards Edges Jon & Kate Plus 8 To Lead Cable Shows

Posted on 30 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

The “break up” episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 was the top cable show of the year, for all of 6 days, until the Michael Jackson Tribute BET Awards ‘09 edged it by less than 50,000 viewers on Sunday night with 10.653 million.

Any other non-NFL non-big sports week, the debut of Disney’s Princess Protection Program would have easily lead the list, but this week it’s 8.533 million viewer average only put it in third place. Following the PPP, Wizards of Waverly Place got a big boost to #7 and 6 million viewers.

WWE Raw on Monday night got a Trump bump, and rose to #4 with 7.298 million. The Closer was almost identical to last week’s results with 6.4 million viewers, but that was only good for fifth place this week.

And I think for the first time this season, USA rookie star Royal Pains posted a week to week decline. Still #8 and 5.943 million viewers is nothing to call the doctor about.

Although we don’t get HBO numbers with our regular cable data, True Blood’s episode this week drew 3.7 million average viewers.

Robert is on hiatus until late July, I am on my own till then, so we will not be handling Twitter (or other) requests for ala carte show numbers.

  1. Alex says:

Dare I ask where the two solid hours of Criminal Intent and In Plain Sight placed outside the top 20.

  2. nickrewind9 says:

Nickelodeon did not make the top 20 this week. :(

What a big week, though. 12 of the 20 spots are more than 5 million viewers.

  3. Tre says:

Omg! i want the full tv ratings, so i can see how other shows did, like make it or break it

  4. Alex,

since though I’m on vacation I am waiting for a call re: a site related project…

IPS was 26th and Criminal Intent was 23rd and 30th by viewers (they ran back-to-back original eps of CI with the earlier airing being the lower of the two). Hawthorne was (27th) and Tiny and Toya on BET was 25th.

Tre, OMG! And good luck with that :-)

  5. Juan says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this has been the biggest week for Cable ratings this year.

  6. Kara says:

Wow. You know it’s a crazy week when Burn Notice is all the way down at #12 when it still has over 5 million viewers.

Thanks for the IPS and Criminal Intent numbers!

  7. Julian says:

Campbell Brown is the queen of Cable News! (as long as someone like Michael Jackson tragically dies)

  8. Josh says:

Is that record ratings for the BET awards? It seems high.

I love that Cable TV has made it’s mark on people during the summer.

  9. tooltip86 says:

What about viewers for In Plain Sight and Criminal Intent? You guys usually post this numbers before the table of top 20

  10. Mega64 says:

The broadcast networks must be jealous, especially considering it’s the summer season now.

  11. Lanie Grace says:

Hmmm I can see the return of J&K as “John or Kate Plus 8″ when they come off hiatus.

    (On the set before interview)

Kate: You really don’t need any water right now
Mady: You’re mean, Daddy lets me have water when it his show
Kate: Well Daddy is just after ratings and doesn’t understand
    Mady: Daddy says you’re a bitch….

Can’t wait for this ratings monster to come back on.

Hope that Dollhouse kills it too!

    ~Lanie~

  12. Karen says:

I see that CI and IPS did okay given that Jackson and BET payed tribute on that night. Does anyone have exact numbers though. Thanks.

  13. rich says:

loci 2 hours 23 and 30 wow they were great episodes wow

  14. Kara says:

Karen – in case no one posts the actual numbers I think I can give at least a point of reference:

A press release from TNT stated that Hawthorne got 3.8 million viewers this past week. It came in at #27 – so IPS and the second airing of CI were probably slightly above that and the first airing of CI slightly below. So it looks like both shows did better this week than last week, but still got knocked around a bit by the BET Award/MJ tribute.

  15. JS says:

    I love Campbell Brown’s show.

  16. Fringefan says:

    I love Keith Olbermann’s show!

  17. Chrisjozo says:

I wonder how the wall to wall coverage of Michael Jackson’s death affected the ratings for other Non MJ related Thursday programs.

  18. Hot Pocket says:

I think the time of cable taking over the broadcasters has arrived. This is the first time in history that 5-8 programs have gotten over 5 million viewers in the same week outside of news telecasts.

  19. Spenda says:

I’m happy The Closer did so well!

  20. Catherine says:

I don’t normally watch BET unless I see a music video I find interesting as I am channel surfing but I watched the awards show. It was odd but entertaining. The fact that they had winners but did not mention other nominees who were in categories was peculiar. I just figured they did it differently and then in one category they actually announced the nominees. It was also hard to keep track of who was on the stage and who was speaking and who was performing. It’s a case when one of those annoying crawls would have been helpful. I’m guessing it was because of the quick change of program but it was confusing.

  21. Hot Pocket says:

Catherine I have to agree it was entertaining and they did a great job under those late circumstances.

The BET Awards has solidified itself as the best award show of them all right now.

  22. sigurdursveinn says:

is it any way to see RESCUE ME numbers? or will there be no numbers until robert comes back or will you only puplish if RESCUE ME goes into cabel top 20???

  23. Dylan says:

WWE RAW is the best….. 7.3 mill viewers!

  24. steve says:

    What was IPS viewers numbes

  25. Mark says:

This is first time I’ve seen a Cable Top 20 list without having to see SpongeBob, NCIS, and Hannah Montana all over the list.

  26. derek says:

Lol Robert, I hope you return soon. Have fun on your vacation. You deserve it after all of the hard work. But I would really appreciate it if you informed me on how Real World cancun did. Thanks!

  27. Julian says:

Hot Pocket, the show was a good production. They did great considering they had 2 days to change things up. Thats why they cut the nominee section, to make it quicker and fit in more MJ tributes.

I personally can’t wait till the VMAs get a go at it. MTV will now have time and the duty to do a bigger and better MJ tribute, the network’s and award show’s impact go hand in hand with Michael Jackson’s carrer and legacy. The Grammys are another institutuon that is tied with MJ’s career and will surely do a fitting tribute. I expect big numbers for those two, bigger than BET.

  28. Mark says:

Wonder how ABC Family’s new show Make it or Break it did?

  29. You might wonder Mark, but just not enough to click on the link titled ABC Family Claims Most-Watched June in Prime in Total Viewers in our “Newest posts” list where that info resides :-)

  30. BG says:

Mr. Robert, here is some more insight on my part. The US Soccer game would have been in the TOP for the week once you add Univisons’ ratings to the mix. I’m expecting atleast 2.0-2.5 rating on Univision (with 2.5-3.5 million viewers). SO, the final viewership for this game (ESPN+Univision) would be somewhere between 6-7 million viewers, and possibly as high as 7.5-8.0 million viewers. Now, that is remarkable. We are still missing the number of people watching at Bars, restaurants, Airports, etc.

  31. BG says:

I meant to say TOP 5…sorry

  32. Alex says:

“I think the time of cable taking over the broadcasters has arrived. This is the first time in history that 5-8 programs have gotten over 5 million viewers in the same week outside of news telecasts.”

I think you can probably say this when cable performs like this during the fall/winter when broadcast is actually trying. Its also worth pointing out that BET aren’t going to have Michael Jackson’s death to spike them up to 10 million viewers every week and TLC aren’t going to have Jon & Kate divorcing every week (at least not yet) to spike them up to 10 million every week either.

  33. Don says:

Washington Post reports Real World Cancun got 1.4 million, smallest opening for a RW season ever.

  34. Kevin says:

Real World Cancun wasn’t promoted enough to me! I’m not shocked it only got 1.4 million viewers.

  35. Chris says:

Could someone provide TV Land (TVLD) primetime and total day if permitted? Thanks.

  36. Tim Creecy says:

    Hey Robert,

I don’t suppose someone would know what the episode of Moonlight on the Sci fi channel got last Friday would they? I only ask because it appears to be the last episode Sci Fi airs for awhile(if ever.) I’ve read the article today from Scifiwire talking about a possible Moonlight movie.

    Hey, I can dream :)

  37. derek says:

Those are horrific numbers… Can Real World: Washington D.C retaliate with the usual incredible numbers that the show brings in? I hope so. It shows that Real World is dumb with the sex and partying and much better with substance and real life stories.

  38. huddy80 says:

It’s good to see The Closer and Royal Pains in the top 20. I am really glad True Blood is still doing well, it is such a great show. I think that if Jon & Kate can retain their viewers when the show returns in August, it should be able to last.

  39. Chaz says:

Secret Life is doing really well. If it can sustain these numbers and even go into the 5.00 million zone, it will guarenteed be back for a third season. last nights episode I think was a poorer one after the last two, but hey, I would like to get two great episodes and a bad one then all bad episodes.

What is with the John and Kate plus 8 hype? Imo, I don’t see how in the world they get 10.61 million viewers. They broke up, that is not that interesting.

Is there any predictions for the effect of The CW’s Smallville move and the effect it will have (good, bad) for the show? Will Ghost Whisperer be effected at all? I think Smallville is a great show, and I am really sorry the viewership has gone downhill. I hope it starts out strong this season and is able to maintain a fanbase. I would like to see one more season of it. What the CW is doing way wrong is adverstising. Why is Secret Life in the 4.68 million viewers? BECAUSE ALL YOU SEE WHEN YOU TURN ON ABC FAMILY IS SECRET LIFE COMMERCIALS! Plus the marathons. The CW does not advertise at all. The only thing I see them advertising is the Vampire Diaries. That does not do Smallville any good. They need those marathons too. If they were to do these, Smallville could easily have 5.10 million viewers each week from Sept.-Dec. and a good 4.50 million viewers from Jan.-May.
