Against mostly repeat competition, Fox and So You Think You Can Dance? had an easy time winning a slow pre-holiday Thursday with a 1.7 rating in the adults 18-49 demo for the night.

At 8pm, a burn off of the canceled Samantha Who? was even with last week (1.0 18-49 rating), but but much better at 8:30 than the yanked (for good?) In the Motherhood. Edit: Unhappy SW? fans have a point, the show did a lot better than Better Off Ted on Tuesday, and Ted’s coming back.

So You Think You Can Dance? towered over its repeat competition, but was still down 10% in the 18-49 demo from last week (2.25 vs. 2.5).

The very few people that are watching The Listener on NBC seem to be sticking around, it had identical ratings to its last outing on June 18.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. rob says:

wow samantha who does better than better off ted does. still bothers me how ABC could cancel it.

  2. David4 says:

Samantha Who? was the best comedy ABC had, and every seemed to enjoy it. It pisses me off that they didn’t even give it a 13 episode third season just to end the show.

  3. Mark says:

Christina Applegate has a pettition that peple are signing to get her show back on the air. It has 32,000 signatures so far.

I’m mad that ABC isnt going to air the last two episodes of In the Motherhood because it only has 2 million viewers. But Better Off Ted and The Goode Family only get 1 million veiwers. It angers me.

  4. Anonymous says:

Why, oh why, does ABC even bother to air GA/PP repeats? They should just shove in a few episodes of AFHV and call it a night.

  5. Christian says:

Has this happened before? I don’t remember seeing Grey’s repeats go down to sub-1.0 in the 18-49.

  6. Bill Gorman says:

Angry Samantha fans have a point, it did do better than Ted on Tuesday, but our understanding was that it was ultimately canceled because it couldn’t cut its budget down to what ABC wanted. Besides the production costs, I’m sure that Ms. Applegate’s fee was a big stumbling block ;)

  7. Anil says:

Yeah exactly..that Ted crap is coming back and not SW. This is BS.

  8. cool says:

I wonder if Univision or/and USA beat ABC/CBS/NBC last night?

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Cool, the nightly Univision numbers are in the nightly average table, and, as always, I will post any USA press releases that appear, but I’m guessing most folks are off today.

  10. RJ says:

ABC was right in cancelling Samantha Who?
However, Better off Ted should have went with it.
While ABC was at it, Scrubs should have been thrown away too.

  11. RJ says:

Didnt USA run a Burn Notice Marathon all day anyways?

  12. cool says:

    oh thanks Bill :)

  13. Holly says:

USA had a Burn Notice marathon followed by a Royal Pains repeat at 10. I doubt there will be a press release about it.

Samantha Who? may have done better than Ted, but its original episodes also came in 4th against all repeats.

  14. Master Moron says:

Didn’t Samantha Who get good ratings in its first season? Then they started switching up its timeslot and not advertising it and big surprise, its ratings crashed. Better Off Ted, on the other hand, had crappy ratings to begin with.

  15. Holly says:

^Yes it did, but only when it followed Dancing. When it lost the Dancing lead-in, it had a huge drop (loosing 7 million viewers and 1.7 in the demo in 2 weeks). It never fully recovered. It went from averaging 13-14 million and over a 4.5 to struggling to get over 10 million and a 3.0.

  16. ABCHasProblems says:

ABC should air new episodes of Wipeout on Thursdays @ 9 (along with Wednesdays @ 8) and move Japanese Game Show to Thursdays @ 10 (away from Got Talent and SYTYCD). I think it’s really stupid for them to air GA/PP repeats knowing they’re better off airing reality shows.

  17. ABCHasProblems says:

“Wednesdays @ 8″ is what I meant. Also, I bet Motherhood will be shipped to Fridays sooner or later.

  18. rob says:

as much as i love better off ted, i would have rather seen samantha who stay since its already had 2 seasons and christina applegate is very funny. ABC shouldve just paid whatever they wanted. it costs more to start up a whole new comedy. i mean samantha who didnt do good last night but it didnt go down from one episode to the other. it stayed the same, which is good.

yea ABC should just air the last 2 episodes of motherhood on a friday at 9 and 930 just to get rid of it.

  19. Lisa says:

I’m watching the Grey’s/Practice reruns, so I hope ABC doesn’t showing them. For me, even old episodes of those shows are the highlight of my viewing week. The fall season can’t arrive soon enough.

  20. Mark says:

I cant wait any longer for fall!

And mid-season, becuase I want LOST and CHUCK!

  21. jay says:

On the subject of Samantha, I’ll bet if you went back and checked, shows which are switched to a new time and get lousy promotion have already shown signs of weakness in some key demo the execs were hoping to appeal to. It may be almost microscopic to the untrained eye, but I’ll still bet that’s the reason. ( As well as the fact that, as Bill pointed out, the $$$ the beautiful Ms. Applegate must have wanted upfront to do the show had to make exceptional and not just so-so ratings in the 18-35 female and other demos a must for it to survive.) As for the young female dancers on the Fox show … God bless America.

  22. Edie Britt says:

i see potentional in samantha who?
i think its soo stupid too cancel this show
    its great

  23. Riff Rafferty says:

RJ writes, “ABC was right in cancelling Samantha Who?
However, Better off Ted should have went with it.
While ABC was at it, Scrubs should have been thrown away too.”

So, in other words, they should have dumped every single half hour comedy they have.

“Samantha Who?’s” final episode (”With This Ring” – July 23, 8:30/7:30) does provide some closure. If that’s what people are upset about. Or perhaps people are just upset because it and “Ted” will both be running for 2 seasons.

  24. Master Moron says:

Riff Rafferty, people are mainly upset because Samantha Who got cancelled and garbage like Better Off Ted got renewed. I wouldn’t really complain at all if they cancelled Better Off Ted as well. Actually, your suggestion of cancelling every half hour comedy they have is a good one. When’s the last time ABC had a hit comedy? They all seem to sink their ratings.

  25. Mark says:

ABC’s fall comedy’s look hilarious though.

  26. Don says:

Let’s not forget Samantha Who? has very little summer competition, whereas Better Off Ted is up against the summer’s biggest show, America’s Got Talent, which has 12mil+ viewers. Not saying BOT’s numbers are excusable, but against lighter competition, it’d had a few more million.

  27. Theoacme says:

To solve the Samantha problem, they need to retool the show:

    1) Replace Christina Applegate with Chiasa Aonuma,
    2) Set the show in Seattle,
    3) Have Sandra Oh play her bff (crossover with Grey’s Anatomy)
    4) Have Margaret Cho, Lucy Liu, Joan Chen, and Ming-Na make frequent guest appearances,
    5) Change the name of the show to “Samantha Hu”
    6) Pay me 10 percent royalties.
    7) Deduct 10 percent of my royalties, and send them to TVBTN :D

  28. Shem says:

    Smart

  29. R.G. says:

Looks like CBS will have a Jauggernaut Thursday nite line up with CSI and Mentalist this Fall…
