The 11th installment of CBS’s Big Brother returned even with last season’s debut (2.3 rating adults 18-49). But the latest collection of crazy people in a house wasn’t enough to stop So You Think You Can Dance from helping Fox to win the night with a overall 2.1 18-49 demo rating.

CBS is likely very happy with BB 11’s opening. In today’s broadcast world, even is the new way up! Samantha Who? continues to drift slowly into the sunset, even with last week’s 1.0 rating.

So You Think You Can Dance was up 20% in the 18-49 demo from last week against the same competition. I’d guess the lack of an up coming holiday weekend caused the boost, but things could just be getting more interesting as the field narrows.

The numbers for The Listener keep getting worse, and no floor seems to be in sight. It fell to a mere 0.7 adults 18-49 rating, its lowest of the summer. Could a televised fish bowl do that much worse?

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Mark says:

    Big Brother 11 was good.

  2. Anonymous says:

Whoa I had NOOOOOOOOOOOOO idea BB was back this year – I completely forgot about it. But judging by the “buzz” on the internet this morning, not many seem to be happy that Jesse (from an old season) is back.
As for the 2.3 it got – it’s good, but considering its up against NO COMPETITION…I’m sure CBS might have been expecting a bit more.

  3. rob says:

Samantha Who gets the same ratings every week. Doesnt ABC see this? how stupid are they!

  4. Drew says:

Holy cow, the new episode of True Blood will most likely draw more viewers than anything on NBC.

  5. Drew says:

Or ABC for that matter. I expected The Office and Grey’s reruns to do better, considering how CBS reruns seem to retain a good chunk of the original episode viewers.

  6. T says:

Samantha Who? needs to be brought back instead of BOT

  7. The1337 says:

NBC should move The Listener to a different day. I’ve watched the first season and it’s actually not that bad. Unfortunately, The Mentalist is simply much better.

  8. Sean says:

Arent those ratings for sam who identical to last week? both demo numbers and viewers.

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Sean, scarily close, but as far as I know, typographically correct! ;)

  10. Andy says:

Big Brother was really good, glad it premiered well.

  11. romo says:

    The headline says SYTYCD got a 2.1 18-49 ?

    Shouldnt it be 2.8 ?

  12. michael says:

So You Think You Can Dance is down over 500,000 viewers per episode this year versus last year, true?

  13. CP says:

I’m surprised Bones repeats beat 30 Rock and Office repeats.

  14. Master Moron says:

Well, I’m done with Samantha Who now that Big Brother is back. I mean, Samantha Who is already cancelled, so there’s no point in sticking with it.

  15. Bill Gorman says:

romo, my bad sentence structure perhaps. Things are much clearer now. I hope. ;)

  16. AniMatsuri says:

So hardly anyone is listening(or watching) The Listener? ;)

  17. T says:

Samantha Who? has a week off enxt week then its back with the final two episodes The Other Women and With the Ring which actually wrap most things up
and i loved last night’s “The Dream Job” episode

  18. Patrick O says:

@CP, IIRC (I haven’t gone back through data to reaffirm, mostly because it would take forever) ‘The Office’ doesn’t repeat that well and I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘30 Rock’ performs similarly in repeats.

  19. nkinsey says:

Has anyone seen the NBC promos claiming “The Listener” as the #1 new drama of the summer? I laughed my ass off when I saw that.

  20. Marty says:

I was saddened to see the Series Finale of Samantha Who? last night!! The show is still getting over 3 million viewers WITHOUT ANY PROMOTION!!!! Just think what it could do if ABC would actually promote the show. The execs at ABC are so stupid, not to see this !!! Bring Sam Back.
