NBC’s The Listener Is Canceled

Posted on 15 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

When you wonder how low ratings have to go on broadcast television for a cheap summer show to get yanked, here’s one answer, a 0.7 18-49 demo is too low for NBC.

“The Listener” will no longer be heard from on NBC after this month.

Peacock said Wednesday that the drama will leave the air to make way for “Law and Order” repeats, which will take over the Thursday 10 p.m. slot starting July 30.

Five episodes will remain in the can; “Listener” was originally scheduled to keep airing through August. But it hasn’t been much of a ratings performer for the Peacock; last Thursday’s episode posted just a 0.7 rating and 2 share among adults 18-49.

  1. The1337 says:

Is CTV going to continue airing the show? The season ends on a pretty big cliffhanger.

  2. Riley says:

CTV will probably continue airing the series, it does relatively well for Canadian programming, pulling in above five hundred thousand viewers.

  3. Nick M says:

I was wondering the same thing. I’m not sure how much of an audience they need/needed in the States but it’s doing well internationally.

  4. Ray says:

I hate nbc for not showing the remaining episodes of listener. Its only fair for the people who did tune in and watch the show every week. Why do they always have to rely on rerun procedural shows such as law and order as their (savior) replacement. Now how am i going to catch up?

  5. Alex says:

Why not burn off the remaining episodes you paid for nbc.

  6. 0megapart!cle says:

Ray, why don’t you get the episodes online? I’m sure they’ve all been available for awhile now.

I watch many of my shows now on a cheap, $100 dvd player with a usb port on the back and divx support. I do a Google search for the shows, like “The Listener s01e09 megaupload”, and the relevant link is almost always on the first page of results. (I have an account with Megaupload which makes the downloads very fast, but that’s not required). Then I stick then on a USB memory key and play them on the dvd player on my HDTV. They don’t look perfect but the quality is perfectly acceptable.

  7. Michael says:

Why did they keep Kings on? It was getting much lower ratings.

  8. MNIS says:

YAY this is great news!!!!!! this piece of garbage NBC used as an excuse for television is the worst show i have ever wasted two hours on!

    thank God

  9. Holly says:

@Michael, Pure speculation here, but it’s possible Kings had a penalty attached (NBC had to pay extra if they didn’t air all the episodes) and Listener didn’t. Or since it was airing on Saturday they figured it wasn’t really hurting anything. Or they wanted to stop Listener before the big cliffhanger. We’ll probably never actually know.

  10. nkinsey says:

Did anybody catch the commercials with NBC calling The Listener the #1 drama of the summer? Hilarious stuff.

  11. Chad says:

    “#1 drama of the summer?”

Wasn’t the same claim made for The Philanthropist?

  12. James says:

Is no one going to comment on this, a site that catalogues televison numbers and their current decline, most likely due to alternative viewing means such as DVR or illegal online downloading, about the earlier post which not only instructs but details the hows of illegal downloading?

  13. Nick says:

I think they say all their shows are #1 based on some nonexistent statistics.

  14. Anonymous says:

James, everyone knows how to download illegal programming here. Omegaparticle didn’t break some groundbreaking news…

  15. Bill Gorman says:

James, Overall US television viewing isn’t in decline, it is growing slowly. It’s broadcast viewing that has been declining for 25+ years, while ad supported cable has been growing. And that earlier “post” wasn’t a post, it was a comment from a reader. And it’s not like the information contained in it isn’t easily available in 30 seconds of Googling.

    There, someone commented on it.

  16. Bill Gorman says:

Nick, not “nonexistent” statistics, “carefully massaged” statistics ;)

  17. Belle says:

They cancelled a great show…. and will be showing repeat… again… of the extremely boring Law and Order ???.. Wwhat the hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. MIke the Canadian says:

James you say POTATO I say PO TAT O, some say that practice is illegal I say its preview ware. Its a Canadian show, with all the ‘pirating’ of USA shows around the globe for once my country produces something people want to steal, haha, I’m proud to be a Canadian today, we made it buddies. Most of you are probably unaware that Canada highest grossing film was Porky’s, yes that little gem, unless trailer Park Boys surpassed it. To get back though to my original point humans are going to have to come to terms with pirating of content sooner or later, its not going away and will increase if the current efforts to further criminalize the behavior by Government and their business sponsors don’t get the point. BTW hows that war on drugs or war on terror working out, get ready for the war on illegal bits & bytes what a grand clusterfuck we got going for us, who actually needs TV anymore with all these wars going on eh. I’m just sayin…

  19. Lanie Grace says:

    @Alex
Why not burn off the remaining episodes you paid for nbc.

Probably because Law & Order repeats brought in more viewers and money than continuing with Listener.

    ~Lanie~

  20. Kevin says:

What are you talking about pirating “The Listener”? It is on free commercial television and if they aren’t showing the entire season in the U.S., what’s the big deal?

  21. Lisa says:

The show was awful. If anyone really wants to see the remaining episodes, though, it’s not that hard.

  22. jay says:

I never was much for Canada bashing until you told me the listener is popular there. A true waste of videotape. What I wish they would do with a crappy, puerile sure to be cxancelled show like that is knock out a few lowbrow dirty episodes for DVD release, like lousy movies add in ” too hot for the cineplex ” ” bonuses.” Am I the 0only one who couldn’t stop thinking as that sorry excuse for a man was reading gorgeous’ womens’ minds andf droning on about duty that it would be much better of as they were undressing him with their eyes they weren’t thinking about their grocery list at the same time? I mean,c’mon now. If youre going to have a silly mind-reading show, at least make it interesting. I know I’m not the only one who thinks like this, because promos for new shows always show a male stripper or some other ” envelope- pushing ” ” naughty ” scene, and pull the bait and switch every time. The CSI series are past masters at that, but bait and switch promnois have been a staple of TV since the 70’s. ( And like a moron I still fall for it,at least on basic cable, since there’s a one in twenty chance it might actually not be a trick. ” A very revealing episode …” Yeah. Some jerkoff walks around his house in boxer shorts for about a microsecond … Eh,its one of those kind of days.

  23. Well maybe NBC should show the entire series over on Sleuth or Chiller it might be ok over on them. I bet it will eventually make it to one of the second tier channels they own. I am assuming they have some ability to put it on somewhere other than just NBC?

  24. Delka says:

Yes, no one should complain about shows being produced in Canada. Heck, half of what we watch in the US is shot “up north”. Bravo for that. If only the exchange rate would be better-the US would get more shows (lose jobs but more shows). And Kings had a penalty attached? Never heard a show having that arrangement before. At least SOMEWHERE on the internet I will be able to watch the last five episode of The Listener. Just wish in was on my 42 inch TV/HDTV instead.

  25. Bunella says:

I’m sorry to hear this. TV today is all about crappy reality programs that are terrible. Finally something comes along to hold your attention and it gets canceled. It figures. TV execs are all about the money and the mindless millions of Americans who don’t have the brains God gave a head of lettuce.

  26. toni says:

I liked the show . will it be somewhere else? how bout the last 5 shows?

  27. Chestah says:

If anyone still wants to catch the remainder of the season… it’s on Hulu.com

  28. Tucker says:

All of the remaining episodes are on Hulu for viewing. Very sad to hear this has been canceled. I really liked the show, nice to see a good show based in Canada.

    -Tucker

  29. Sammie says:

If you are wanting to catch up on any episodes you have missed or would like to see the last episodes that were filmed but not aired you can go to http://www.hulu.com and watch them for free. That is where I go whenever I miss an episode of any show.

  30. Charles says:

All Listner episodes are on HULU. You can just pull them up an watch them.

  31. shannon says:

this just isn’t fair i loved that show.thats bullshit the want 2 play all reruns of law and order .they need 2 finish the show so ppl can see whats happening.how are we suppose to know if toby ever finds his mother and his brother.

  32. Pam says:

Your going to air reruns of Law and Order instead of keeping The Listner on. Where is the logic in that? That makes no sense at all!! Whoever makes these decisions is in need of a little help. I’m guessing they don’t watch a lot of TV.
Please reconsider and do not cancel The Listner. It’s a great show!! It must be. My husband doesn’t watch TV very often but really enjoys that program. :)

  33. Kendra says:

That’s not fair my husband and I were really into that show. Law and Order is old and boring now. To many shows like it!!!!! Canadians your lucky if the show keeps airing there.

  34. Mary says:

I watched all 13 episodes on Hulu, but do not see any numbers higher than 13. I like the show, and certainly better than reruns of anything. I do not subscribe to cable but had expanded basic through my condo but after digital conversion channels above 31 are no longer available unless one rents a cable box or subscribes to some alternative dish type service, so I have been able to watch shows that are broadcast on USA and TNT one week after their original air date. Hopefully some other network will pick up The Listener.
