Tuesday Ratings: Fox, AL, MLB All-Star Game Win; America’s Got Talent Does Well At 9pm

Posted on 15 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

Due to the live MLB All-Star Game telecast, all fast affiliate ratings results for Fox are approximate and subject to more than typical revisions in the final results. See below for more information.

Scoreboard FOX NBC CBS Uni ABC CW
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.0/12 2.6/8 1.8/6 1.4/4 1.3/4 0.3/1

Of course Fox and the MLB All-Star Game won the night, but NBC’s America’s Got Talent provided a surprisingly strong challenge at 9pm.

Update: The 80th All-Star Game averaged 14.6 million viewers.

On a personal note, I’m old enough to have been a boy when the NL won the All-Star Game “all the time”. It really is a freakishly streaky contest. I still plan to update with some All-Star Game historical info when I finish sifting through it.

Whether it was the shuffling of Great American Road Trip off to Mondays or not, NBC’s America’s Got Talent at 9pm saw its adults 18-49 demo rating jump 20% (from a 3.0 to a 3.6) over last week. The Superstars got the worse end of the change perhaps, as it slipped from a 1.4 to a 1.2 rating this week at 8pm.

I’m guessing Primetime: Family Secrets didn’t have Michael Jackson family secrets last night (or at least much less interesting secrets than the All-Star Game), as it fell from a 2.6 demo rating to a 1.8.

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  2. The1337 says:

Wow, BOT moves to 9 PM with heavy competition and gets slightly better ratings?

  3. Mark says:

Better Off Ted is up:) 90210 is down:(

  4. Catherine says:

For CBS Big Brother had decent demos, even with all the heavy hitting competition.

  5. rob says:

plus ABC gave the show NO promotion so maybe if they promote it next week, ratings may even improve more?

  6. William says:

I often wonder how “America’s Got Bowling Balls” would do in the winter or fall? I mean “Talent”.

  7. Chief says:

Maybe I’m just being stupid, but was last night’s AGT the best showing NBC has had since, I don’t know, the series finale of ER?

I wouldn’t be surprised if NBC moves AGT out of the summer spot in 2010.

  8. Don says:

Actually, Primetime: Family Secrets was about the Jacksons again.

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Don, then either the secrets are less interesting, or the public may be tiring of them! ;)

  10. Mark says:

AGT won’t be coming out of the summer spot, but NBC has a spin off called America’s Got No Talent coming to the 10pm slot Monday – Friday this fall.

  11. Bill Gorman says:

Mark, I call that a comment thread win at 11:52 Pacific Daylight Time. ;)

  12. RJ says:

Family Secrets did pretty well at 10pm considering it was against the All Star Game and it had the terrible 0.8 demo as a lead in.

  13. Jamie says:

mark you my friend are an idiot…..

  14. Janet says:

    @Jamie, Wich Mark?

  15. ken says:

I’m going to guess that AGT cost a lot less than whatever Fox is paying for the all-star game to achieve similar results both in total audience and demos, although baseball probably skews male and AGT probably skews female.

  16. Bill Gorman says:

ken, my guess is that both Fox and NBC are happy with last night’s numbers. The All-Star Game was the most viewed since 1999, and you are correct that it gets heavy ratings in the male demos.

And AGT is very, very cheap. ;)

  17. Jalen People says:

    Mark!!
    HILLARIOUS!!!!

  18. sam says:

i think all netowrks should triple there nielson numbers i mean…..ask anyone you know i bet there NOT a nielson family alot more people are watching shows than you think!!……..mark very funny i think you need to write for Leno ha

  19. Jane says:

Write for Leno? Man that’s a low blow. I actually thought Mark was funny.

  20. Bob Terns says:

Come on guys, Jay Leno is a hilarious and intelligent comedian.

Just as Bill Clinton is a faithful, loving husband.

  21. Christopher says:

i am not Nelsion and watch a lot of shows

  22. Don says:

Next Tuesday should be interesting with CBS’ ‘Medium’ debut.

  23. gustavo says:

Is incredible, better of ted has worst ratings than samantha who and it is not cancel.

  24. Shem says:

Wow NBC was great. That SVU repeat had the most total viewers for non-sports, good for them.

  25. The_GodfatherSJP says:

I love how almost no one here was talking about the actual events of the Allstar game. I’m actually a little surprised the numbers improved in the 8PM vs. 9PM hours. Basically, most of the scoring was in the 1st 2 innings, with the NL getting all its runs in the bottom of the 2nd. The AL tied it in the 5th, then won it late. There was a big lag in the 3rd, 4th, and most of the 5th. That’s about a 30-45 minute block of game time with little action. You’d think it would affect ratings considering its sports, but I guess not. Is it normal for audience levels to drop with nationally televised sports if the game is boring or a blowout?

  26. Bill Gorman says:

Godfather, unfortunately these fast affiliate numbers are not good for looking at viewership of live events as you tried to do.

The numbers, for example, for 8-9pm measure that time period in each time zone separately. So 8-9pm was the first innings in the Eastern time zone, but nearly the end of the game in the Pacific time zone.

  27. Ricardo says:

Better Off Ted is the best. Absolutely the best.
