  1. forg says:

Nothing against 30 ROCK and MAD MEN, especially 30 Rock because I like that show, but I find it unfair that they got 4/5 for the WRITING nods for their respective categories. I mean I’m sure those were well written episodes but I guess there should be a limit to pave way for other well-written episodes from a lot of shows.

  2. Worldwide Pants says:

Uhm, where is The Shield? Nice to see Kristen Chenoweth get a nom for Pushing Daisies, and Big Love for best show (too bad none of the cast received noms). Michael Emerson very deserving for Lost, Josh Holloway would have been equally deserving. I love Family Guy, but not for Best Comedy.

Sorry – The Shield, anyone, anyone?

  3. Where’s Dollhouse? Easily the best new science fiction show in years. If frickin’ T:SCC can get a nomination…

  4. OldEuropean says:

Why the preponderance of season/series finales? I mean, Battlestar Galactica would deserve almost any award out there, but why the sloppily-edited finale episode has been nominated for an Emmy is mystifying. Exactly the same thing applies to the Lost season finale; both series had much better(-edited) episodes.

  5. Drew says:

My most telling number: 0 non-technical nods for True Blood. Not watching you this year, Scammys.

  6. Kathy B. says:

Happy to see Flight of the Conchords make the cut.

  7. Visan says:

With the same ol’ shit getting nominated every year, it’s no wonder the Emmy’s ratings tank!

  8. Ray says:

As long as “Damages” gets everything it’s nominated for I’ll be happy. “Mad Men” had it’s time and now it’s “Damages’” turn.

  9. Shem says:

So the CW got 2 nominations- one for Everybody Hates Chris and the other for Smallville. The network has too much of low quality shows.

  10. John says:

Glad to see Amazing Race keep getting those nominations! Big Philly Style finally got one all to himself.

  11. TheMediaFan says:

Before we start It only won two major emmy awards for Gillian Anderson and Best Drama It won several major Golden Globes, but it took years before even that occurred.
Don’t be too upset because Fringe and True Blood weren’t nominated this year. The Emmys are especially notorious for snubbing Sci fi/ horror shows and X Files falls under both categories. It took the X Files years before Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny got nominated. And only Gillian Anderson won one time and their last year they were only nominated for technical awards. Same thing with the Golden Globes.

  12. TheMediaFan says:

Damages deserves to win over Mad Men though

  13. TheMediaFan says:

If True Blood were a lawyer show or cop show on HBO, it might get nominated. Although look at the Wire.

  14. Jack says:

Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.

No love for BSG, The Shield and FNL. ): When even The Wire didn’t get nominated in it’s final season (and The Wire was/is the greatest American TV show ever), I wasn’t really expecting anything for BSG and The Shield.

  15. Adam says:

I’m shocked True Blood got snubbed from the main categories. Also Kiefer Sutherland too.

But it’s good to see Family Guy breaking that barrier.

    Here’s more of my thoughts.

    http://tvdonewright.com/?p=2175

  16. Zee says:

Desperate Housewives, the no:1 comedy show in America and still huge world wide gets no love. Honestly, emmy voters need a slap in the face. There is a reason why that show still gets almost 16 million viewers on average and is no:1 in the 18-49 demo. It deserves a best comedy nomination.
I mean Family guy get in there (bloody animation show should be in an animated category)
30 Rock is so over rated and I agree that they didn’t deserve 4/5 noms for writing.
Same goes for Mad Men, they get 4 noms for writing and the only other drama in that category is for LOST (hope they win and kick Mad men’s butt)

  17. tom says:

i like family guy but honestly it was easily their worst season. it’s so funny that simps has never been nominated. i’m hoping next year they ditch the idea of being in the kids category and try to move up.

  18. Lisa says:

Biggest snub to me was of Katherine Heigl. I don’t care what she said about the writing on her show last year (though she shouldn’t have said it publicly); she deserved a nomination this year.

  19. heidi says:

Yay Academy for not buying into the Whedon-bots fantasy that Dollhouse doesn’t stink.

The Family Guy breakthrough is cool for the world at large. Animated shows have to decide which category they want to be considered in, you’re not allowed to compete in both. And for years none of them have even tried the general comedy category, there was too much anti-animation prejudice at the Academy.

But now Obama’s President and Family Guy can get nominated. See guys, the world’s getting a little better every day.

  20. TheMediaFan says:

Every tv critic I’ve been reading has said that True Blood got snubbed.

  21. TheMediaFan says:

It got snubbed because it’s a vampire show. Want proof? Here’s a quote from Lisa de Moreas.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/07/14/DI2009071402323.html
“Arlington, Va.: How did “True Blood” get lost in the nominations? I read on Entertainment Weekly the other day that it was not eligible yet for a nomination — is that true?

Lisa de Moraes: The TV academy will not vote for any show that has fangs. Period.”

“Writing Catagory (Mad Men 4: Lost 1: Does it seem a little obnoxious that four of the five nominations for writing went to “Mad Men”? I understand the writing is great but it just seems off. Especially since there were some other shows with fantastic writing this year.

Not to mention how Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos got shut out for “Battlestar”…but its on Sci Fi (never going to type out SyFy which is lame). Lame!

Lisa de Moraes: It’s more than a little obnoxious. And one of the first things you learn when you start covering TV industry is that the TV academy does not take Syfy (I’m adapting) or vampires seriously. Period.”

  22. Silku says:

And Chuck got snubbed too, i hoped that at least Zac Levi will get some recognition. :(

  23. TheMediaFan says:

John Noble certainly deserved a nomination for best supporting Actor.

  24. Cyndy says:

Anyone have stats on what cable nets got the most nominations, without having to route through all this info?

  25. Bill Gorman says:

Cyndy, use your browser page search for “cable nominations” and you’ll go directly to them.

  26. CP says:

I didn’t even bother to look at all of those nominations. Next year’s nominations would be out by the time i finished. I am rooting for Jim Parsons and Neil Patrick Harris to win their categories though.

  27. Cyndy says:

Thanks Bill – I did that, and all I see are general articles about cable having more noms than broadcast, along with some press releases from AMC and Bravo about having so many nominations. I’m looking for a list of the networks and how many each received.
Oh well, if anyone has such an animal, please let me know. Meanwhile I’ll keep googling!

  28. freeman says:

my favorite win (which will never happen) would be if sarah silverman won for best actress in a comedy series.

if they really wanted to shock people, they would have nominated her show instead of family guy. i didn’t think the second season was quite as good as the first, but the first-season episode where sarah tried to get back at two guys who had dug up her mother’s skeleton and were having sex with it by defeating them in a cookie-baking contest is probably the strangest 30-minute story i’ve ever seen on television. the woman deserves something for her work.

  29. Bill Gorman says:

Cyndy, I didn’t mean Google, I meant your browser page “find”, it was just down the page.

  30. No True Blood! That’s just pathetic, despite HBO getting more nods than ever.

And TSCC only got a SOUND nod. That show DID do SOME things right. Summer should have got an Emmy nomination for “Allison From Palmdale”, which was a brilliant performance.

  31. heidi says:

Don’t get me wrong, I love 30 Rock. And 30 Rock is a very rare example of a show where Emmy Awards seem to have made a difference in getting people to try a show. But the Academy’s getting a little 30 Rock-crazy.

I have no problem with the 4-out-of-5 writing nominations, even. And Elaine Stritch and Jon Hamm were first-rate in their guest performances. But Alan Alda, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Martin were nothing that special. They were just big names doing TV. They shouldn’t reward that so automatically, somebody must have done something good on another show.

  32. heidi says:

To be specific with some positives: the whole Michael Scott Paper Company run of episodes on The Office was brilliant work. As high-level as all the writing on 30 Rock is, come on guys, one of those Office scripts or Idris Elba’s guest turn as Michael’s replacement could have been wedged in there between some of the 30 Rock nominations.

  33. Christopher says:

Katherine Heigl, , the cast of Despert Housewifes and True Blood should have had been nomatied not Mad Man and 30 rock again again, Nice to see How i meet your mother get a nod and the guy from Big Bang

  34. Christopher says:

and find it werid that the shows abc cancled get Emmy nods

  35. greennogo says:

No Shield? Anywhere? Emmy voters are making Academy voters look like Cahiers du Cinema by comparison.

  36. j says:

    Hey, Dr. Horrible!

  37. eric says:

are these awards about shows from 2008?
because Dr. Horrible was in like July of 08…
    confusing.

  38. eric says:

Oh, and do shows from BBC get counted towards this at all? Are they even eligible?

Doctor Who did something at the end of last season that so many other shows have had potential to do, but none of them have. Sure, there was one Private Practice / Greys Anatomy crossover last year… but… it’s greys and private practice.

Doctor Who had like a 3 or 4 episode crossover to end the season which included 3 different Doctor Who related shows: doctor who; torchwood; sarah jane adventures. it was incredible writing.

Stargate could have did that so many times, but they never did.

  39. Drew says:

Re:Eric, eligibilty was June 2008 through May 2009.

  40. Drew says:

And I’m pretty sure just American shows are eligible.

  41. Losteech says:

Dude, LOST has 6 nominations not five…I guess you probably forgot about the “Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media – Fiction” category?

Here it is (if you don’t believe just check out the nominations!)
Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media – Fiction
    The 30 Rock Digital Experience • NBC.com
The Dharma Initiative • ABC.com <– THIS IS IT!
The Office Digital Experience • NBC.com

The second one was the latest ARG which got canceled, but anyway – it's still a nomination… :) Just wanted to let you know. ;)

    cheers

  42. Lanie Grace says:

There is a thread going on over at Terminatorwiki titled

Terminator almost completely ignored at Emmy’s

Lots of whining and moaning over the fact that TSCC was virtually ignored….
Hmm…could it be because it was virtuality ignored every Friday night at 9pm ?

    ~Lanie~

  43. Actually, Lanie, they might have cited Bear McCreary for his music work on TSCC, especially because he also did music on Lost.

And I would have really liked to see Summer get a Best Supporting nomination, at the very least for “Allison From Palmdale”, which was terrific acting playing a robot, a glitched emotional robot, AND a real human all in one episode.

  44. freeman says:

they have the same situation at the dollhouse wiki, but nobody posts at the dollhouse wiki any more so they’re cool about it, in a way.

  45. Vetinari says:

The Office got 10 nominations, not 9.

  46. Vetinari says:

Or maybe the digital experience one somehow doesn’t count? It’s related to the show though so I’d think it should.

  47. Jesse says:

Did I see right, is Sarah Silverman now an Emmy nominated actress? She of the same show that once had a character sing “This is a poop song, this is a poop song. We pooped at the mall today! We pooped at that maaaaall!” It’s about time somebody recognized her terrificness. She won’t win, but it actually is nice to see her nominated.

Jemaine Clement is a Best Actor nominee? Finally.

Flight of the Conchords is nominated for Best Comedy? Finally.

FAMILY GUY IS NOMINATED FOR BEST COMEDY?!? Probably doesn’t deserve it for this year, though it’s deserved it in years past. Feels like a lifetime achievement nomination to me.

I love you, Emmys, I love you for diversifying yourselves this year. Contrary to what that guy said above, this is not the same old nominees. This is different, this is sort of shocking, this is good.

    Complete sidetrack:
Screw you Emmys (I love you and hate you at the same time) for giving in to media pressure and giving Jim Parsons a nod. He should never be mentioned in the same category as Steve Carrel’s Michael Scott or Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy. Luckily, I see no way Parsons brings his annoying schtick on stage, so that’s good.

  48. RSH – AFP sucked. I wouldn’t want to see anyone pick up any awards for that. Summer’s performance in it was workmanlike, but it wasn’t anything special.

Summer did especially great (and opposite) jobs in The Demon Hand and Self Made Man: I don’t know if Demon Hand is elligable (what is the time period for the Emmy’s for anyway?) but I’d have liked to see one of those recognized if any episodes were recognized.

  49. Lanie Grace says:

    @Squiggleslash

Even I have to admit Summer Glau did a great job in Self Made Man. Allison from Palmdale, meh…

    But neither were Emmy worthy.

    ~Lanie~

  50. Cyndy says:

Thanks Bill, for that list of the cable noms! Great to see how many different networks are represented. Too bad many media planners still treat cable like broadcast TV’s poor second cousin.

  51. Christian says:

    @Jesse:

Actually Sarah Silverman was nominated last year for her guest work on Monk. She also won for writing the song “I’m F*ing Matt Damon.” :)

  52. Eric says:

I like that Terminator got a sound nod…

More so than any other show I watched while it was on… i LOVED the intro’s to Terminator. Every episode had an awesome intro, and just as things were heating up… DUN UN DUN DUN UN! that awesome terminator score played… got me pumped.

  53. freeman says:

somebody needs to acknowledge sarah silverman one way or another. they do comedy unthinkable in its horror. “if you be my friends again i’ll show you my pussy” was the most mind-boggling line of dialogue on television last year.

  54. freeman says:

and let’s not forget a number of the comedy nominations are basically gifts to their recipients because curb your enthusiasm took a year off.

  55. Eric says:

Sarah Silverman is a horrible comedian. I acknowledge that.

  56. SgtSharki says:

Where’s the love for “Burn Notice”? Talk about a snub. And while we’re at it, where’s the love for “It’s Always Sunny”? Also, enough with 30 Rock. We get it Emmy voters, you like this show, too bad you’re the only ones.

On the positive side, I’m glad to see Family Guy up for Best Comedy. I’m a huge fan and I thought it had it’s best season since returning.

  57. kev says:

wow nbc got alot… its good to see them getting so much nominations since everyones been on there case lately if only theyll transfer this into ratings…

  58. freeman says:

30 rock is a wonderfully done show. i’d just hate to see it turn into an annoying academy teacher’s pet the way frazier did in the 90s. it’s cooler and fresher than that.

as for people hating sarah silverman, utterly stipulated eric. she’s doing stuff designed to peel the paint off your living room walls. shows like hers and the late great wonder showzen are the best justification i know of for limited-audience cable channels. but she’s doing stuff nobody else ever contemplated playing for comedy before, how many comedies can say that?

  59. Eric says:

theres a difference between comical and retarded.
offensive comedy for the sake of being offensive and gross… is retarded.

Dave Chappelle did what you claim Sarah Silverman does. Sarah Silverman is just dick and fart jokes, and that, my friend… is retarded.

  60. freeman says:

sarah herself has characterized her own show as retarded in at least one interview i’ve read.

and obviously that stuff can get too relentless. i think on the movie front sacha baron cohen is finding that out a little bit this week. and if every show were like that, it would be a horrible world. but without that impulse there’s no da ali g show, there’s no borat movie. and that would be a shame.

  61. Dennis says:

    I love 30 Rock,but 22 noms? Even I think that’s too mch.
Family Guy? Seriously?! I think FG is one of the worst shows on TV, but…

  62. kev says:

family guy isnt that bad… the season jus stunk

  63. cammy says:

Glad to see Generation Kill got a bunch of noms – amazing mini, that. Though Alexander Skarsgard should’ve gotten an acting nod for his brilliant performance. Shame.

I’m surprised by all the surprise about SCC getting nothing. It was sci-fi, so that’s strike #1…and it was an unsuccessful sci-fi show (in terms of ratings). You think the Academy is going to nominate that?! Please. People should know by now that nominations aren’t about quality, not totally.

I’m glad True Blood got ’snubbed.’ Season 1, frankly, wasn’t that great. It was still finding itself. It also has the fantasy strike against it, but Alan Ball and HBO might make up for that next year.

  64. Eric says:

I agree True Blood season 1 was meh.
But I’m of the opinion True Blood season 2 is equally as meh.

Season 2 is even worse: it’s lost the “OMG THOSE’R ROGUES BOOBS!” factor.

  65. TheMediaFan says:

I disagree S2 of True Blood is more riveting.
S2 is definitely darker and scarier and gorier and I love it.
Fellowship of the Sun’s interest in Jason, their war with the vampires, Not knowing much about Maryanne and how evil she is and how Bill plans to fight her and Sookie’s trip to Dallas. Definitely more riveting than last season. Not to mention having Michelle Forbes play her.

  66. TheMediaFan says:

    True Blood’s S2 is like Dexter’s S2

  67. TheMediaFan says:

    http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/315655-_Blood_Flowing_Again_at_HBO.php

“Michael Lombardo, president of HBO’s programming group and West Coast operations, talked with B&C’s Melissa Grego about the network’s plans for keeping up the momentum, his reaction to Emmy nominations HBO did and didn’t get, and what he thinks of Showtime and other rivals. Following is an edited transcript of that conversation.”

“Are you surprised True Blood didn’t get more recognition?

Not really. Truth is, we premiered the new season of True Blood right before the nominations, so timing-wise it really didn’t have time to have impact with Emmy voters. I think its time will come. Next year, I would be very surprised and disappointed if it weren’t recognized more.”

  68. Max452 says:

“There is a thread going on over at Terminatorwiki titled

Lots of whining and moaning over the fact that TSCC was virtually ignored….
Hmm…could it be because it was virtuality ignored every Friday night at 9pm ?

    ~Lanie~”

How many other good shows were virtually Emmy ignored? Buffy was amazing yet was ignored year after year. X-Files, Star Trek Next Gen, Angel, etc etc etc

I think the beating of the TSCC dead horse should be done. Let the fans that miss their show whine and moan, its hard when something you like gets cancelled, and they have every right to be annoyed.

Next season we’ll be hearing the whining and moaning of the Dollhouse fans when Fox axes that as well.

  69. RuzaRoos says:

Well I was holding on to a little hope that Lena would get a nom for TSCC but oh well. I think it is sad how predictable the lead drama actress nom list is though. Sally, Glen, Kyra, and Holly are boxing out emerging talent to collect TV awards and noms at the end of their film careers. I guess Meryl ran them all away from the big screen. I suppose if she moves to TV they’ll just go to Daytime and beat up on the soap actresses. I would have loved to see Glen Close on Passions during the Timmy days :)

I’m sure they are all very good in their shows, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. They should almost be judged relative to their own work or just give them all lifetime achievements and bar them from the general category. Go Elizabeth or Mariska! I guess I’m even more saddened by the prospect of well acted challenging TV missing out on acknowledment in order to feed these TV vehicles for Hollywood heavyweights. Sally’s show is excluded from that remark, not because it is challenging but because it is not a Sally Field vehicle. Please don’t think I’m saying TSCC was challenging either, it was not. I’m sure there is some small show somewhere with a great actress that would have greatly benefited from the exposure of a nom and instead we get catering to the established acting brands.

iCarly is primetime right? Jennette McCurdy snubbed, wtf ?? :)

  70. I’d like to see Olivia Williams (Adelle DeWitt) get recognition at some point. Maybe in next year’s Emmys. DeWitt is probably the most interesting character on Dollhouse, and in part that’s because Williams doesn’t phone in a cheap performance.

  71. Zach says:

Wow. NBC has the most nominations this year for broadcast. I’m glad to see that.

  72. Richard Steven Hack says:

Squiggleslash: Now see how we diverge. While Olivia Williams was good on Dollhouse, nothing stood out for me vis-a-vis being Emmy material. There were no heavy emotional moments, and only one comedic moment which was out of character for the character.

OTOH, I think Summer’s performance in Self-Made Man was purely workmanlike, and nothing special. There were no heavy emotional moments compared to Allison From Palmdale where she was constantly laying on the emotion heavy both as a robot and as a human. Watching Summer’s face scrunch up as she was crying as Allison was a tear-jerker. Her reactions when she was confronted by John in the halfway house subtly indicated that she was re-asserting her Terminator mode precisely at the moment he suggested he could “fix” her.

Considering how difficult it is to play a robot that still manages to convey what’s going on in the machine’s mind merely by subtle facial expressions, Summer definitely had the toughest role on the show. Lena was brilliant as Sarah, but Summer was also brilliant. I doubt most of the actresses nominated really could have pulled off that role as well as Summer did. She has an amazingly expressive face as a real person, which is one reason she’s such a fine actress.

The guy who played the library clerk had more emotional moments than Summer did in Self Made Man; he was very good. But she played robot just as she always did, except for the part at the end where he went off on her and her face showed the lack of comprehension in dealing with a human emotional outburst and the reasons thereof.

No, Summer definitely deserved an Emmy nomination if anyone did.

  73. ABCFanatic says:

America Ferrera, Ugly Betty, Jeremy Davies, Felicity Huffman were snubbed!!!!!!!

I’m happy with all the nominations of ABC! Especially with Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Pushing Daisies, Brothers & Sisters and Boston Legal.

  74. RSH – I understand where you’re coming from, but Summer’s main triumph with AFP was that she made the best of awful material. Yes, she showed a number of different personas, but actually, for the most part, she was doing “normal acting”, and that was because this was one of the few episodes where she had an opportunity to do that. I didn’t think anything she showed was that extraordinary, I mean, it was good, Summer’s a very talented actress, but if she’d been invited on to “All My Children” and done a performance of a “normal girl” it wouldn’t have looked much different to her performance in that episode of “All My Circuits”.

There were several aspects of “Self Made Man” that made her performance worthy of Emmy consideration, but one – which is tempting to forget and even consider a negative – is that it was the logical apex of one side of the Cameron character she had been playing throughout the series. Few people deserve an awards for fifteen minutes of playing a new character, if they did, we would see most Emmys going to players of cameo appearances or “Victim/villian of the week” characters in crime dramas. I’ve seen some utterly fantastic patient of the week performances in House but I’m not surprised only the regulars ever get any consideration.

Summer was the one bright spot in that awful TV series. And Self Made Man was her opportunity to define a major part of the character, and as always, she excelled at it. The episode would not have carried and not have been considered one of the best of the series if it wasn’t for Summer’s performance. And yes, Summer had done many of the acts before, but that’s not a negative: SMM pulled those acts together in one place. And Summer did a fantastic job of realizing it.

Olivia Williams – I think we’ve seen more of her than you think! “Haunted” practically revolved around her, and episodes like “Spy in the House of Love” and, as you say (but seem to see as “out of character” – actually I saw it as an awesomely perverse way of defining the character) “Echoes”, helped define a character that wasn’t what was expected.

I think the way to define William’s performance is by the reaction to her character from other people. And, I can tell you, I’ve never seen a single character that generates such absolute loathing of the creators of the show itself. Hell, I’ve been flamed and treated as someone who just said “I think Hitler’s a pretty nice guy” for saying that I think DeWitt is a fantastic character who isn’t some cheap archetype. And, of course, some of that is the writing, but a huge amount rests on Williams’ performance.

I don’t know if it’s worth an Emmy right now, but it’s certainly deserving of a nomination, and, who knows, with a new series that should help define the character even more, we might see something more concrete this time next year.

(BTW, isn’t the Internet wonderful? Miracle Laurie got my tweet this weekend, wishing the cast and crew better luck next year, and retweeted it. A few years ago, I’d have had to go to the trouble of writing a letter for what was a brief complement that’d have probably been filtered through an agent anyway. The world seems to get smaller every year.)

  75. Bobby says:

I know it’s not a big deal, but I’m growing to hate the animation voters and they’re lame picks every year. Where is Venture Brothers? or Metalocalypse? Don’t get me wrong the simpsons is always going to get a nod, it’s just a part of life no matter how bad they get. South Park, again, predictable but still great. Robot Chicken(cool! okay choice). American Dad!?!?! Ahh you kidding? Really!?!?!
Animation wise I just wish for once the best shows were actually honored and not the ones with the most money or on the best networks.

  76. zenith says:

OK. Where is John Noble’s name. What is wrong with you people?! That really, really sucks.
