Friday, July 17, 2009
Powered by programming extravaganza “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana,” featuring cross-over episodes of hit original series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “The Suite Life on Deck” and “Hannah Montana,” Disney Channel was Friday’s No. 1 TV network in Prime in Households (4.0 million/3.5 rating) and Total Viewers (6.0 million), surpassing runner-up CBS by 5% (3.8 million) and by 20% (5.0 million), respectively. Impressively, Friday’s Prime win marks the net’s 2nd victory in the previous 4 weeks, with Disney Channel the only cable network this year to beat all broadcast competition on a Friday night.
On a Total Day basis, Disney Channel ranked a dominant No. 1, besting No. 2 Nick-at-Nite by 89% in Kids 6-11 (1.3 million vs. 689,000) and by 103% in Tweens 9-14 (1.2 million vs. 590,000). The net was also Friday’s most-watched cable network in Total Viewers, topping No. 2 Nickelodeon by a solid 29% (3.1 million vs. 2.4 million). Also impressive, Friday July 17, 2009 now stands as Disney Channel’s second-most-watched day in the net’s history in Total Viewers, Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, behind only 8/17/07.
During the event (8:00 – 9:30 p.m.), Disney Channel’s dominance proved even greater, sweeping TV’s No. 1 position in Households (5.8 million), Total Viewers (9.3 million), Kids 6-11 (3.8 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.7 million). Impressively, Disney Channel towered over runner-up CBS by more than 4 million Total Viewers, or by 82% (9.3 million vs. 5.1 million). In target kids, the special more than tripled the delivery of Nickelodeon in Kids 6-11 (3.8 million vs. 1.2 million) and nearly quadrupled in Tweens 9-14 (3.7 million vs. 982,000).
“Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” became the most-watched scripted TV telecast of 2009 in Kids 6-11 (3.8 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.7 million), and cable’s No. 1 scripted telecast in Total Viewers (9.3 million). In fact, cable’s No. 1 telecast in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14 this year, among all TV telecasts the event ranked No. 2 in Kids 6-11, behind only NBC’s “Super Bowl XLIII” coverage.
- With “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” and last month’s stellar premiere of original movie “Princess Protection Program,” Disney Channel is home to TV’s Top 2 scripted TV telecasts in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, and cable’s Top 2 scripted telecasts in Total Viewers.
- Fronted by “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” and repeat of “Hannah Montana” (9:30 – 9:55 p.m.) directly following, Disney Channel delivered Friday’s Top 2 TV telecasts in Total Viewers, the Top 16 in Kids 6-11 and the Top 18 in Tweens 9-14.
- More than half of all available Kid 6-11 and Tween 9-14 viewers watched “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” (53 share apiece), with nearly two-thirds of all Girls 6-11 and Tween Girls tuning in to watch (65 share apiece).
- Compared to 2007’s cross-over event, “Wish Gone Amiss” (7/13/07), which featured episodes of “Cory in the House,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and “Hannah Montana,” “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” out-delivered by 82% in Total Viewers (9.3 million vs. 5.1 million), by 73% in Kids 6-11 (3.8 million vs. 2.2 million) and by 48% in Tweens 9-14 (3.7 million vs. 2.5 million).
- Versus 2006’s cross-over special, “That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana” (7/28/06), which featured episodes of “That’s So Raven,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and “Hannah Montana,” “Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana” out-performed by 41% in Total Viewers (9.3 million vs. 6.6 million), by 36% in Kids 6-11 (3.8 million vs. 2.8 million) and by 37% in Tweens 9-14 (3.7 million vs. 2.7 million).

Wow, I wonder what other show will top this now.
Are those Nielsen numbers recent?
They sound like the 4th of July week when Hannah and Spongebob were the only new programming and kids were home with family all day for the holiday.
During that week, adult cable programs were in reruns.
That WoD/HM episode aired Friday (2 days ago).
I love how the Disney Tween Universe is.
Ugh, this annoys me, big time. SpongeBob must have topped this.
Stephany, I am the first person to give the Squarepanted one his due, but 9.3 million is well above what he’s done this year, since we began this site in 8/07, and almost certainly ever.
Wow. I was guessing it would pull in around 7 million. 9.3 is awesome. It’ll be interesting to see how many spots in the top twenty it takes this week. It aired 4 times over the weekend.
When I saw this on the schedule, it was a no brainer that this cross over show would top everything. Combine 3 of Disney’s top rated shows and getting anything less would be surprising. This one edge that Disney has over Nick since there’s almost no way Nick could do a cross over show like Disney does.
