There’s been lots of discussion about So You Think You Can Dance’s move to the fall season, and much has been of the “it’ll never beat X or Y show”, but I think that’s besides the point. Ultimately Fox needs it to do better than what it had in the same day/timeslot last season. Similar to their move of Bones to Thursdays. Fox didn’t “beat” the competition on Thursday’s, but they beat their own previous Thursday results.
Tonight’s “So You Think You Can Dance” celebrates the dance competition’s 100th episode, a fact that executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe is still digesting. [...]
Mike Darnell, Fox’s president of alternative entertainment, said “SYTYCD” will move to the more competitive broadcast season because of its “ridiculously consistent” ratings. It has drawn an average of 8.9 million viewers season-to-date. “This show has earned its trip to fall,” Darnell said. “It’s done incredibly well in the summer, and its fan base is very loyal, so I think people will follow it there. We’re also hoping there’s a new audience that will find it in the fall.”

I guess its better for FOX that they have SYTYCD in the tuesday slot against other reality DWTS, The Biggest Loser, and the NCIS dramas. Now that FOX NBC and ABC all have similiar reality for two hours viewership will likely be consistent.
Why NBC doesn’t follow suit with America’s Got Talent is beyond me. Just move some of your stinkers to the summer, NBC, heaven knows you’ve got a lot of them.
Hell NBC could make The Biggest Loser into a summer series as their summer stalwart, and give its spot to America’s Got Talent, which is their strongest. Easy as pie.
Fox has finally made Dance into the true American Idol placeholder. The thing is will people be burned out on two consecutive seasons?
Then again, here in Canada there’s a Canadian edition of Dance that starts August 11, so here it’s three seasons of the show in six months @_@
I wonder how total viewership numbers have trended in the past for 3+ network non-summer programming blocks of reality/talent show (American Idol not included) television? Are they trending up? Down? And if down, can it be primarily explained away by cable and DVR?
I think SYTCD will be cancelled when it moves to fall
hahahaa
It won’t get canceled, even if it fails the the fall. Worst comes, they move it back to the summer. It’s doing too well in the summer for it to be canceled.
