The finale of The Bachelorette was easily the highest demo rated show on Monday night, lifting ABC to the nightly win with an overall 3.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demo. There was more good news for the Mouse as the second outing of Dating in the Dark held steady from its premiere rating.

Last night’s Bachelorette finale averaged a 3.4 rating for adults 18-49. That matched the show’s 2008 summer finale rating. Quite an accomplishment in today’s broadcast environment.

Dating in the Dark’s 2.5 demo rating was identical to last week’s premiere, which is good news for ABC. Although this week’s half hours were split 2.7 and 2.3, so there may be erosion in the future.

NBC was the only other broadcaster to go with new shows last night and they got crushed. Great American Road Trip continued to sputter along with just a 1.o demo rating. The second, and final!, episode of The Wanted might just be the least wanted NBC new episode ever with just a 0.5 demo rating. I will see what my historical information yields. Update: How could I forget how dreadfully Kings has done!

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. rob says:

You said Tuesday night, dont u mean monday night?

  2. rob says:

ABC is repeating last nights Bachelorette tonight from 8-10 then at 10 the After the Final Rose. Superstars finale will be next Tuesday at 8. Also Better Off Ted’s final 2 season 1 episodes will be on back to back on Tuesday August 11th at 9 after Millionaire, which is actually not a bad idea. Hopefully Millionaire does good to help Better Off Ted.

Also I figured Dating in the Dark would do better because I knew the Bachelorette would do really good last night but it stayed exactly the same. Hope it can maintain good numbers since the Bachelorette is over.

  3. cool says:

^ I think Dating in the Dark will be steady next week also, it’s two hours long.

  4. RJ says:

“Although this week’s half hours were split 2.7 and 2.3″

Not that large of a drop. Without The Bachelorette, I’m guessing Dating in the Dark will get a 1.6-1.8 demo. That demo would be good enough for another summer renewal I’m guessing. If ABC wanted to, they could bring both The Bachelorette and Dating in the Dark back next year. After all, Dating in the Dark is doing better than Here Come the Newlyweds.

  5. Ron says:

The Big Bang Theory beats Two and a Half Men in the 18-49 demo for the first time.

  6. CP says:

Next year they need to get a better looking bachelorette. ABC is also the only network that I can see that doesn’t have any “On Demand” things from Comcast. What’s up with that?

  7. John says:

Good night for ABC. I was surprised Jillian got over ten million viewers. She wasn’t exactly the classiest gal they’ve ever had on the show.

  8. Joe R says:

Dating in the dark will probably lose some viewers but it is a show that u get hooked on and a show that does not matter if u miss an episode

The Big Bang Theory has to be one of my favorite shows and it did better than two and a half men in the ratings and in some cases doing better in the summer than the fall

Did Gossip Girls go up from last week???????????

  9. Anonymous says:

    LOL @ the Wanted!!!

  10. rob says:

oh yea u forgot to post Gossip Girl ratings.

  11. Bill Gorman says:

rob, of course I did! Fixed.

  12. Bill Gorman says:

OMG! How could I have forgotten Gossip Girl?! Fixed. ;)

  13. rob says:

haha not like the ratings were any good anyway but wow it beat NBC’s the Wanted in 18-34 rating.

  14. Sean says:

I would just like to bring a point from previous discussions: It’s pretty clear that NBC would KILL to have a show like Burn Notice, Royal Pains, etc., that brings in 6+ million viewers. And that number would likely go up on broadcast, especially with a strong promotional push.

  15. Jenna says:

Oh man I gotta say…as ashamed as I am to admit it…I kind of enjoy Dating in the Dark. I dunno what it is. It’s probably going to be my new guilty pleasure show…

  16. Michael says:

Actually, Bill, several new episodes of Kings got a .4 or lower in the demo but they were on Saturday nights.

  17. thedemonhog says:

Woah, Lie to Me got the same 18-49 rating and more viewers than House against steeper competition.

  18. dave says:

Thedemonhog, they both got 4.2 million viewers. That’s basically the same amount plus 9 is just a straight up stronger timeslot even with tougher comp, and house is on a bit of a rerun overexposure on cable but still this is great news for fox. It means season 2 should be stronger than season 1. Why doesn’t nbc repeat any of their shows to grab viewers for the fall. Its not like repeats of chuck could do much worse than the original programming tonight.

  19. tom says:

dude… lighten up on olbermann… he’s been on vacation and it’s not an election year. that post is so silly. if it makes sense then why don’t we just compare the attendance and ratings of a pre season nhl game with the stanley cup finals?

  20. So Cal says:

Kings had way worse ratings than “The Wanted” did in viewers and 18-49.

  21. Josh says:

The Wanted is a very decent show, and they were already able to remove the red tape to get two terrorists extradited to face charges.

I have to wonder what NBC is thinking, they put up The Wanted, first when its not listed anywhere, nobody knew it was even on.

Next they schedule against the Bachelorette finale. I have to wonder what they are thinking. This show deserves more of a chance than this. If nothing else they should be able to sell it to Fox.

  22. Bill Gorman says:

Josh, while my best days as a clairvoyant are long behind me, having never seen the show, here is what I am sensing that NBC was thinking:

“Oh My God, did you see that? Absolutely no one is going to watch that, what the F$*&^! do we do with it?”
*We’ve only paid for two episodes”
“Let’s air the first one, but not tell anyone ahead of time and maybe no one will notice, and let’s put the second one on against some big competition that’s going to hammer whatever goes against it anyway so we don’t actually waste something people would want to watch.”
“Then, let’s blame it all on Silverman. He’s out of here anyway”

    But that’s just a guess.

  23. ABCFanatic says:

3.9 for the Bachelorette finale is freaking strong!

  24. Aquat1c F1sh says:

A 3.9 for a summer program is intense. That’s roughly what Lost got this year.

  25. Kathy B. says:

I really enjoy Lie to Me. Hope that pairing it with House helps to pull in more viewers.

  26. Drew says:

Perhaps it’s time to let Jack Donaughy run NBC.
