Thursday night’s airing of So You Think You Can Dance that winnowed the contest down to the final four led FOX to easy victory with an adults 18-49 rating of 2.5.  CBS’ The Mentalist was the most-watched program of the night on broadcast with 8.26 million viewers, and third most-watched with the 18-49 set (Big Brother’s 2.0 with adults 18-49 was second).

FOX will have four hours over two nights worth of SYTYCD next week.  Other than SYTYCD and The Mentalist being very impressive in reruns there really isn’t much to say about the night. On the broadcast ratings front there won’t really be anything interesting (at least to me) until the Sunday night results for the premiere of Defying Gravity — I’ll post something about that later.

Yes, I know — you want to know how Burn Notice and Royal Pains did last night.  Me too!  Sadly, we don’t get preliminary results for cable shows.  USA Network might do a press release about the numbers if they break more records, or some of the trades might pick them up, but even if that happens that’s typically late afternoon on the west coast.  If I see them, I’ll post them.  Otherwise we’ll see them for sure on Tuesday.

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. gmyers says:

    Very good for The Mentalist

  2. sGabe4 says:

“second most-watched with the 18-49 set”
    you mean 3rd
    BigBrother was second overall

  3. Adam says:

Really really surprised by the margin between CSI and Grey’s Anatomy. During their new episodes, they are usually much closer.

  4. sGabe, I did mean 3rd. Fixed!

Adam, it’s not too surprising to me anymore. It has been the case for seemingly the whole time we’ve done the site that the CBS procedurals have always repeated well, and very well relative to ABC dramas like Grey’s and Desperate Housewives.

  5. Ricardo says:

The Mentalist is probably gonna be the most watched show next year.

  6. cool says:

I know it’s a repeat but I’ve never seen CSI so low.

  7. cool says:

In viewers? maybe but in the demo, I don’t think so. Not even close.

  8. j says:

I’m surprised Dance is so low on the next to last week of the season.

Yeah, I really don’t think Mentalist will take down the Idol.

  9. jessica says:

in which day’s comments are we supposed to leave requests for individual cable shows? thanks!

  10. The1337 says:

The Mentalist will probably be the top scripted show in viewers and demo. It will probably be behind AI and DWTS.

  11. TeMerc says:

What happened to The Listener @ NBC? I got a rerun of L&O last nite in Phoenix, otheres got an episode? WTF??

Bad enough they canceled it, then not show last one in our market??

  12. forg says:

I hope THE MENTALIST could break the 20 million viewers mark next season. 30 Rock seems to be doing well on repeats, if Park and Recreations was not sandwiched between 30 Rock and The Office it would probably get low ratings

  13. TeMerc, you can find the final episodes of The Listener on Hulu or NBC.com — the unaired episodes are available there.

  14. cool says:

In the demo? I don’t think so. Grey’s Anatomy, Housewives, House, Two and a Half Men and Big Bang will beat The Mentalist in the demo.

  15. TeMerc says:

Thanks Seidman, found ‘em at NBC. I’m just curious why Phx market didn’t get the last one. Pisses me off

  16. jay says:

I’m rooting for Mentalist, too. Assuming( which i shouldn’t since i don’t recall) the fall schedule is the same as the summer’s, I would love to see that crytofascist long in the tooth hoary old dud law and Order and PP both carved into slices by Mentalist.

  17. Bryan says:

well i’m not a fan of The mentalist, i tried to watch it but it didnt really get me, sry :( i hope Private Practise can make a decent rating against the mentalist. Crime vs Hospital rule on Thursday :D Grey’s Anatomy vs CSI on 9/8c and Private Practice vs The Mentalist on 10/9c wow :D

  18. Jon says:

I wonder how long it is before CSI switches to 10pm with The Mentalist at 9pm TPTB and CBS are probably hoping that the changes being made for this season will help regain lost ground but IMO I think this will be the last season at 9pm for CSI.

I wouldn’t be surprised if The Mentalist ends up being CBS’ post Superbowl show although I think NCIS:LA, BBT and HIYM have a shot as well.

  19. Aquat1c F1sh says:

It’s hard for me to see CSI not be on at 9:00, but then again, The Mentalist is (more than likely) going to be significantly ahead of it in the 18-49 demo, so I guess it could happen. It’s just that CSI has been in the 9:00pm slot since it’s second (or maybe near the end of its first) season.

  20. forg says:

CBS is grooming The Mentalist to be their next flagship show now that CSI is already aging same with The Big Bang Theory which I really hope could break 10+ millions every week and slowly match the numbers of Two and a Half Men

  21. Master Moron says:

So, does that mean we’ll get The Mentalist: Miami and The Mentalist: New York?

  22. Mark says:

The Grey’s Anatomy repeats are up 1 million!

  23. J.Norman says:

Shows like Greys and Housewifes are ‘next day water cooler shows”. By that I mean that they draw first run and next morning enthusiasm among their fans. The fans simply have to know who went to bed with whom right away. Once it has happened, and (next morning) enthusiastically discussed, there is a drastic reduction in interest in seeing it all again.
Shows like CSI, House, Mentalist, etc are not dependent upon the voyeuristic angle and score much higher in the repeat veiwings. Particularly after some amount of time has passed.
