NEW YORK–Aug. 9, 2009– Nickelodeon’s iCarly–basic cable’s number-one kids’ program among total viewers quarter to date, was the champ with total viewers, kids and tweens with its “iFight Shelby Marx” special (Aug. 8, 8 p.m. ET/PT ), which drew 7.9 million viewers (P2+) and set a series record as the most watched iCarly special with viewers (P2+).  “iFight” was basic cable’s number-one telecast with kids and tweens on Saturday night, and lead the competition by triple-digits, with all kids and tween demos ahead of  Disney counterprogramming (a new episode of Wizards of Waverly Place [8-8:30 p.m.all times ET/PT] and a repeat of Hannah Montana “He Could be the One” special [8:30 – 9:30 p.m.]).

iCarly “iFight Shelby Marx” ratings highlights include:

  • iCarly ranks as basic cable’s top kids program on Saturday night with 7.9 million total viewers (P2+), up +435% in delivery over last year and +146% ahead of Disney counter programming.
  • With K2-11, iCarly averaged a 12.1/4.3 million K2-11, up +384% in rating over last year’s time period and +157% ahead of the competition during the same time period.
  • Kids 6-11 ratings were especially strong, garnering a 16.4/3.5 million K6-11, up +483% in rating and was +160% ahead of the competition during the same time period.
  • Among Tweens, the telecast averaged a 14.2/3.1 million T9-14—up +788% in rating, and +178% ahead of its nearest competitor during the same time period.

In iCarly “Fight Shelby Marx,” it’s the battle of teen sensations when reigning online queen Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) squares off against teen fighting champion Shelby Marx (Victoria Justice).  Carly jokingly challenges the champ to a fight during an iCarly webcast which Shelby thinks would be a promotional win-win for both girls to participate in a mixed-martial arts exhibition. However, when Carly accidentally pushes Shelby’s grandmother at a press conference, Shelby is ready to throw off the gloves and knock out her opponent.

  1. Jose says:

    Good for ICarly

Had a feeling it was going to do really well since ICarly was a trending topic on Twitter last night.

  2. Jose, that is sort of surprising since I keep reading about how teens and tweens don’t use Twitter!

  3. Jon says:

Looks like Burn Notice won’t be Number 1 for the week but the kids show like iCarly always seem to do well but iCarly has really irractic scheduling.

BTW Robert, when we will find out Monk and Psych’s numbers? I’m guessing Tuesday unless USA brings out a press statement on Monday..

  4. Hot Pocket says:

I was right as I said both Burn Notice and iCarly would reach series highs.

Is just patheitc how badly the networks have thrown away Saturdays and yet cable is reaching solid ratings and series highs for their shows. Hall of Fame probably also did well.

  5. ABCHasProblems says:

iFight Shelby Marx was really funny. I wonder how many total viewers watched when you count the original Saturday 8 pm airing + Sunday 11 am airing + Sunday 7 pm airing. I think of iCarly as a family show since kids, teens, and adults can all watch and laugh. You can’t say that about that Wizards crap on Disney.

  6. Ted says:

Congrats to “iCarly”! First the Emmy nomination, and now this!!! Almost 8 million it’s premiere!!!

  7. iCarly’s creator Dan Schneider just linked to this article on his Twitter account:
    http://twitter.com/DanWarp

I’m so glad the iCarly special did very well! :)

  8. Yes I did! Thanks for following me on Twitter. :)

  9. I now follow Dan as well :-) Congrats and thank you for the link! BTW, though it’s only been on the site a couple of hours, this page is already by far and away the most viewed page on our site today.

around 20 percent of the traffic is coming from Dan’s link on Twitter with the rest of it coming in via Google search. Lots of fans of iCarly, not that we didn’t already know that from the ratings!

  10. Jon, sorry, missed the last part of your comment at first. Yes, we will see the rest of the cable numbers on Tuesday morning if there aren’t any press releases before hand.

  11. Shane says:

Nickelodeon is still the reigning champ! And iCarly is a monstrous hit! Congratulations to Dan Schneider on DECADES of success in the kids industry and yet another one. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Veronica Justice-project (she played Shelby Marx) coming in 2010!

  12. Vicbling says:

    Hey its awesome.
i think icarly is the best teen-kids show and everyone can watch it cause its really cool.
i hope icarly wins on Teens Choice awards :D
    Good work Dan!!! :D
i follow you on Twitter too =)
    im 18 :P

  13. Pynki says:

Not surprised. I’m 25 and i Carly cracks me up.

  14. Jim says:

Not everyday you get a 788% increase in a certain demo, kids show or not.

  15. MIke the Canadian says:

Robert, 15 yr old Morgan Stanley interns may have insight but certainly not all the answers, in fact his answers match up to what mine would have been when I was 15 in 1982 or so sans the fancy updated tech mind you , btw what is an icarly, lol, I’m getting too old.

  16. Nick says:

number one entertainment network among kids? i dont think so, that’s Disney Channel. but then again, Disney seems to attract an audience slightly older (around 9-14) than Nickelodeon (7-12).

  17. Kyle S. says:

@ ABCHasProblems, Actually you can say that about Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel. It is a very entertaining show to watch for not only kids but adults as well. I am 23 and often watch it with my little cousin. You are entitled to your opinion though. I just thought I would add my two cents.

  18. Joe Mora says:

I’m 19, and since I watched my first episode a few months ago, I’ve been tuning in for every new episode. I agree with the others who say its for families, not just young kids. I salute the producers, because iFight was seriously the most hilarious tv special I’ve seen in years. I watched it all three times since it came out, and I laugh harder every time.
@Shane the actress who played Shelby Marx is Victoria Justice, not Veronica Justice.

  19. Jack says:

I was with younger cousins Saturday night and ended up watching that show. I was shocked and disappointed at the horrible imagery portrayed in that program, notably the glorification of violence by, and to, women. Why is a 15-year-old girl who is taught to brutalize other people portrayed as a cool, attractive girl instead of a monster? 15 year old girls are supposed to be studying, playing sports, and going to parties, not kicking other women’s teeth out. Why was it funny when the three girls did unspeakable things to the nerdy boy at the end, which they didn’t even show? That program encourages terrible behavior by females. I would never, NEVER let my daughter watch that show.

  20. Alex S. says:

    “Wizard’s fail.”

Didn’t Disney Channel receive a higher 9.2 million TV viewer rating number for its telecast of “Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana?”

    so I don’t think Disney’s very upset right now…

And didn’t “Hannah” put up huge numbers for the “He Could Be the One” telecast last month?

  21. Lizardman says:

Dan, I admit it I’m 52 and I watch iCarly. It’s a good clean fun program. This coming from a big True Blood fan to point out the wide spectrum of shows one can like! Thanks for the continued quality programming.

And didn’t “Hannah” put up huge numbers for the “He Could Be the One” telecast last month?]

“Wizards fail” comment I think has to do with the fact that Disney purposely placed a new episode of Wizards up against ICarly Saturday to hurt ICarly’s ratings, yet the show still got 7.9 million viewers, A million more viewers than what Hannah Montana’s “He Could Be the One” which aired without competition.

  23. ArnoudX says:

While I think it’s great for Nick, I think it’s even greater for Dan, his team, and the actors. They are doing a great job on iCarly, making it one of the, if not the, most hilarious show(s) on the whole World-Wide Television.

Congratulations, and Kudos to the iCarly-team!

CARLI Y SAM USTEDES SON MUY DIBERTIDAS Y CUANDO SERA EL CAPITULO MAS DIBERTIDO

  25. danny says:

@jack:st because they portray the kids a little bit more like they are in real life doesnt mean its bad. I mean when have you ever seen girls over 13 act anything like anyone from hannah montana. if you ask me youre overprotective and in denial.

And @nick: a well i really don’t know who gets overall better ratings nick or disney. i do have to disagree with you about the audience thing. im 14 and most people i know would rather watch nick than disney. so maybe disney has higher with little kids but im certain nick does better with tweens and teens. you see we don’t like hearing a huge message every time we watch a show. we like randomness like icarly

  26. OpeningDayGuy09 says:

iCarly is for everybody and its clearly one of the best comedies on TV right now. Forget that THE BEST COMEDY ON TV. This isn’t the 90s so there’s no real competition for iCarly right now in the comedy genre unless its a CBS comedy.

  27. icecream isaw2 says:

shelbey m.would of never fought carly if she dident tacall her grandmother, but it was just a mustack.carly won any way just bcuz she held on 2 shelbey leg.

  28. !!!ellen!! says:

Hi icarly! remember me from the tca?

  29. Delsy says:

I love iCarly but i find it hard to beleive people ove the age of 14 watch it not that it isn’t a good show heck it is my number 1 current tv program(i am 13) tieing with hannah monatana but like it is a bit childish it tries to get the older group by used words that aren’t so squecky clean. My lil sister 5 love iCarly but my older brother 18 hates it with a passion but thats just my family.

Congratz to hannah for winning the TCA i find it funny how iCarly won the NICKELODEON kids choice awards won best tv show but Hannah Monatana won the NAUTRAL teen choice awards(even though teen choice awards have got a Nickelodeon producer or something) Don’t get me wrong they are both abosolutly great shows and i am so happy iCarly gets such great ratings. Sorry to ramble :)

  30. Delsy says:

@Danny the thing you said about nick getting higher teen veiwer than disney is kinda wrong because Hannah and Wizards do get a high percentage of over 14 veiwer and i remember one episode of iCarly that more than 5/8 of it veiwers were 2-11.

  31. forg says:

Good ratings for the show. I wonder if The Secret World of Alex Mack did this well back in the 90s :D

  32. james says:

wow disney must be crying right now 7.9 million viewes i guess nick knows what to do with their shows

  33. nemo says:

well disney underestimated the show even the jonas brothers has no match
the only reason why the “Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana” got high ratings is a crossover or joint force by all the disney channel stars

7.9 million viewers is enough to keep disney channel nervous and on their toes

  34. taylor says:

hi carly fredy and sam . let me tell u how much i wach i carly every day i record all of the epesods. ok let me tell me about me am turning ten on the 18. my b day is aug 18 1999. i have a dog named pennut, i have a cat namred oreo. i have 5 people in my family . i love ur shows . i hope u send something back i am your bigest fan. from taylor

  35. kc says:

the way to know if Disney is upset by this is if they lure all the guest stars who appeared in the episode to Hannah Montana and create a similar one.

  36. SI says:

Those numbers don’t surprise me. I’ve been watching iCarly along with my kids for the past year and a half, and it seems like over the last year it’s slowly developed from a kids’ show that had some surprisingly amusing moments for adults into perhaps the best sitcom on all of TV right now.

Over the last season, the writers seem to have gradually piled on more layers of humor to the point that it looks like they’re actively going after older audiences in addition to kids now. Any show that can do an episode where the central joke revolves around, for example, black market uranium smuggling, or have a character say that something “isn’t mine, I’m just holding it for a friend,” isn’t exactly just for kids.

  37. Eils says:

I live with eight kids, all of which love to watch iCarly and Hannah Montana and whatnot, and while I will walk out of the room before I have to hear Miley Cyrus’ whiny voice, I must admit I do not grate my teeth at the thought of iCarly. The leads are adorable, and the guy who plays Spencer has a future in “real” television after this. And as for the Emmy nomination? I had no idea, but congrats to the Shay family and friends.

  38. icarly says:

  42. Emily says:

I’m 14 and I think iCarly is way funnier than any of the disney shows. They are all so boring. Its hard to believe that disney had more teens watching it compared to the amount nick had.
