Mailbag: Too much Burn Notice, not enough Paula Abdul orTrue Blood

Posted on 09 August 2009 by Robert Seidman

Burn Notice

You write too much about Burn Notice! Chuck wasn’t bad enough?  But at least I understood with Chuck that it was on the bubble and might not be renewed. Burn Notice is  definitely renewed so give it a rest! Burn Notice contest. Burn Notice preliminary numbers. Burn Notice final numbers. Burn Notice press release trumpeting the final numbers.  I don’t have anything against Burn Notice, but, ENOUGH!  Where Paula Abdul lands is more important to ratings. But do you write every day about that?  No!  And what about True Blood? True Blood deserves some more love!

My guess is you’re definitely not going to like it when Dollhouse is back on the air.  It’s summer, and Burn Notice is a popular show.  It’s true, I did write about Burn Notice’s split season scheduling, Burn Notice’s 18-49 numbers, and Burn Notice’s preliminary, final and press release numbers for the summer finale.    And excuse me for having a contest giving away $400 worth of stuff!

I really don’t understand why people can’t ignore things they’re not interested in, so it’s difficult for me to summon any empathy.  Be warned, you can expect more Burn Notice in the weekly cable post.  A contest winner post and perhaps a Live+7 DVR numbers post.  But Burn Notice is off the air until the winter, so it should die down.  On the other hand, you can probably expect more posts than you might want about Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for the next two weeks, and plus, next Sunday Mad Men is back.

I’ve written about True Blood quite a bit, and if HBO actually issued more (OK, any) press releases about ratings and DVD sales, we’d probably post about it more.  But around True Blood’s finale there may well be as many posts as there were on Burn Notice.

We definitely write about True Blood’s numbers when we see them.

As for Ms. Paula Abdul….

I did write about her departure from American Idol.  But it was in the context of “Bigger Diva: Paula Abdul or Brett Favre?”.   I think it’s a good comparison in that the media loves speculating about what will happen.  But all the day-to-day machinations matter not.  Assuming that she doesn’t wind up back at American Idol (and I’m definitely not yet convinced she won’t), there will be coverage of where she lands. If that happens there will also be a lot of coverage of how she impacted the ratings on her new show, and then analysis of American Idol’s numbers post-Paula.

American Idol's Paula Abdul

But she could simply wind up back at Idol.    If networks were issuing news/releases like “If Paula was on Dancing With the Stars the ratings would go up 13%!” or “Without Paula, Idol will end down 20%” I would cover that.  But none of that is happening.   The “everybody loves Paula” phase, without any numbers, just doesn’t make much sense to cover.  At least with Burn Notice, there are numbers!

Actually, there is an interesting article out about Abdul that you didn’t cover. But it says the opposite of what this email claims. Apparently Abdul was the least popular judge, at least if you count second by second how much attention was paid to her via TiVo.

  2. MNIS says:

People should be THANKING TVbytheNumbers for NOT covering Paula Abdul and True Blood!

  3. greennogo says:

I actually dated Burn Notice once…but when she turned my cell phone into a GPS navigator and a two-way radio, I started to think that this relationship was getting way too co-dependant.

  4. Nick says:

Julia, that’s actually an interesting article, lol. But she rambles, so I can understand people fastforwarding through her comments whether they like her or not. That still doesn’t convince me that people don’t like her. She’s a part of Idol, and without her, ratings will fall. Kara has absolutely no chemistry with Randy or Simon, so the show will just feel strange without her. If Paula does wind up on Dancing with the Stars, which is a good possibility, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it wind up ahead of Idol in the ratings this season.

  5. Kay Bradley says:

Paula Who? And no empathy here either … all the posts on Dancing With The Stars? It scares me when I realize how many people are watching it. I think a lot of the people on this site are buyers or media analysts of some kind – so Burn Notice appeals to them from an intellectual side as well as a business interest. I’ve had some occasion to see recent weekly numbers from both the UK and Australia …. maybe that could be a sub topic here – how the rest of the world views our shows as well as their own. (Unfortunately Australia like DWtS a lot too).

  6. It is an interesting article and I meant to post it a couple of days ago. No excuses other than senility and ADD. I went looking for the chart it referenced to see if I could find it, couldn’t, got distracted and forgot about it completely!

    It’s posted now :-)

  7. Roberts brother says:

Dude its hilarious. People are selfs pricks most of the time. I read your crap because its well done crap. I mean its TV. I know this is serious shite for some people, but ya all gotta losen your bung holes and read a book or something constructive.

Seidman, ignore the lazy selfish rat-bastards. You do great work brother! I love this site. Its all I think about. The day Drudge linked to it I can’t stop looking for the side car freaks pissing about the shite you dudes obsess about. IE: chuck and crap shows like it.

  8. anthony says:

TO JULIA: Thanks for the Paula article!

Here is my response to that article that claims that people fast forwarded their Tivo when Paula started to speak which made her the least favorite judge but people watched Randy over and over again which made him the most popular judge:

People are not rewinding and rewatching Randy because he is great and interesting. They are rewinding and rewatching his comments because we cant figure out what the h*ll he is saying! “DAWG, Feeling it, off the chain and on the hook yo yo yo “. WHAT?! Speak English, not ebonics. I have to rewind a few times just to understand what he’s saying.

  9. tony says:

Burn Notice is just not that great.

It is funny at first and then just the same thing over and over.

I can’t stand shows with that McGuyver theme in general and Michael and Fiona have absolutely no chemistry even though she is hot.

  10. MIke the Canadian says:

Ok let me make it real simple for some peeps out there. Our existence is made up of aprox. equal numbers of men and women, actually women out number men slightly. This is the reason shows like American Idol and DWtS are popular and subsequently shows like Burn Notice and Chuck also have notoriety. Now I’m not saying no women watch BN or chuck they do, but far more women and tweens, if they count, watch AI and DWtS, sure sure a few men I’m sure watch as well, they obviously don’t wear the pants in that family but that’s their problem. Now this site is run by two fine gentlemen in their, ahem sorry if I’m way off, mid forties or so, AI and DWtS isn’t even on their radar, sure they’ll cover the numbers, pen the occasional article, but seriously there are thousands of dimwits posting about that crap all over the web, do they really need more press. The guys are obvious fans of both Chuck and Burn Notice, and allot of other shows, and so occasionally extol the virtues of that fine TV, nothing wrong with it and certainly appreciated by many readers. Atleast in terms of the numbers there is more play in the speculation of the mid level shows than the juggernauts AI or DWtS, we know the numbers are high, hence the focus on the audience for the lesser shows, cause deep down we all wish for the day when BR or Chuck or any real TV outperforms AI/DWtS or they’re canceled or all these silly tweens grow up and get some taste. Who really cares about Paula Abdul anyway, I doubt her leaving will have any affect on the ratings, mb a slight improvement but isn’t that show about the would be idols, not the overplayed judges and they’re smarmy comments, flame on.

  11. aboleyn24 says:

Mike the Canadian, really? I am a woman and have never seen an episode of DWTS. I love Burn Notice and obsess madly over Chuck which I would put in my top five shows. I could not possibly care less about Paula Abdul.

What I really don’t understand is some folks inability to just skip things that don’t interest them. I enjoy reading the articles and info on BN. I don’t care about say sports or most reality shows so when I see something with that in the title I don’t read it. I don’t get upset that someone wrote about it and demand it not be so. I thoroughly enjoy this site just as it is.

  12. Rick Holy says:

If I don’t like the food that Mrs. Smith cooks, I’m not going to go over to her house for dinner. If you don’t like the TV shows discussed on this web site, then GO TO ANOTHER SITE – OR START YOUR OWN !!! Either way, quit you belly-achin!

  13. zeker says:

I gotta say, you guys get some weird mail! LOL. For the record I don’t care for Chuck or Burn Notice and I am a Dollhouse and (was) TSCC fan. Clearly my tastes are very different than the people who run this site.

    Who Cares?!?!?

I don’t read this site for the best/worst show opinions, I read it for the numbers (It’s almost like that should be in the title or something). I read for the numbers and the opinions and analysis of the numbers. And you guys do a great job of that.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people fee the need to come here and bitch about one show or another being canceled. Surely to god there must be other sites that are, you know, devoted to that kind of stuff.

Keep up the good work guys, keep the numbers and analysis flowing and don’t let the mailbag get you down.

  14. Actually, while I disagree with Tony about Burn Notice not being that great, I have to agree a little about Michael and Fiona. For most of the episodes, Mike really doesn’t expend a lot of effort trying to be nice to Fiona. In fact, he seems so tamped down and obsessed with getting back in to the intelligence community that he almost ignores everything else unless he’s dragged into it.

Now there HAVE been episodes where he’s been much nicer to Fiona right up to the point of sleeping with her. But then he backs off again, or goes back into his obsession which alienates her. One reason the mid-season finale was VERY good is because he went totally off his overly controlled demeanor and blew away – literally – his chance to get off his burn notice in order to save Fiona. It was nice to see him realize once again that he really does care deeply about her.

Also I have to say the MacGyver aspect of the show is fairly minimal. He only cobbles stuff together most of the time because he doesn’t have access to the sort of tech hardware he’s used to – although he seems to have no trouble getting firearms and explosives via Fiona. Still, there are plenty of places that sell electronic surveillance devices and the like; you’d think he have more of that stuff to hand without always having to cobble a cell phone into a bug every week. It’s not like he’s broke any more with his multi-thousand dollar gigs he pulls down.

  15. Kermonk says:

“I really don’t understand why people can’t ignore things they’re not interested in, so it’s difficult for me to summon any empathy.”

Indeed, its not a logical thing and therefore can’t really be understood on a logical level, its an emotional thing, and who knows why people freak out over something.

I don’t think you’ve been overdoing Burn Notice mentions at all, in as much as i noticed it, it was that unfair competition where only people in your neighborhood could win prizes ;)

As for the show, I think they should kill of Fi and bring in someone he actually has chemistry with *g*

  16. Adam says:

I’ve enjoyed most of the coverage on this site (in exception 12 days of Chuck thing…was it 12 days, felt longer?)

Anyways, this site does a great job. Amazing job. It’s my #1 source for ratings, and there’s interesting discussions here, even though we don’t always agree.

I enjoy debating on here, whether it’s about how NBC ruined Kings, or how funny that “Gays boost True Blood” column was. Still having fun with that one ;)

I’m just saying, we aren’t always going to agree, that’s impossible. But these guys are working their butts off every day on this site, and we have to respect that. :)

  17. You can’t kill off Fi and bring in someone Mike would have chemistry with because HE DOESN’T HAVE CHEMISTRY WITH ANYBODY! That’s the deal with Michael Western – he’s very cold-blooded due to his upbringing, and has difficulty relating to people, which is why he’s a spy in the first place. That’s been clear practically from episode one.

As his mother says, Fi is the best thing that’s ever happened to him and the only person he really cares for, despite his best efforts at ignoring that fact except when it hits him in the face as in the mid-season finale.

That makes it a bit hard for the show, similar to Dollhouse – they have problems making the guy likable. He is engaging and most of all competent, so it’s not that bad, but it is a part of the show’s concept. All three of the main characters, in fact including his mother, have serious personality flaws, but they’re engaging – and useful – because of that fact. Fi is a gun and explosives runner, Sam is a con artist gigolo, Mike’s mother is a hyperchondriac nag, and Mike has trouble relating to “real” people as opposed to gangsters, spies and corrupt people. Can’t really expect “normal” behavior from that lot – but that’s one reason the show is fun.

  18. Ryan says:

because Burn Notice is the only relevant show of the summer. And paula abdul and true blood suck. get over it.

  19. Adam says:

Ryan, you might not like True Blood, but you can’t say it isn’t relevant. You get over it.

  20. Tommy S says:

People are waaaaaaay too uptight over this stuff. First off, this isn’t their site, they should be happy to see any information regarding shows they love in regards to ratings and news articles, etc. Second, this site doesn’t charge to get a look at the information being provided, so they are getting any information they gleam from it for FREE. There are articles about shows I do NOT care about on here. I don’t want to read about American Idol. BUT, I have the capability to NOT read the article. GASP!!!!! Is that even possible????? YES!

My take is, it’s not my site, I don’t contribute to the costs, so I don’t get a say in what articles are being written or what is going to be covered. If I were to run a similar site, you best believe shows I enjoyed more would likely get more coverage than maybe shows I don’t. People need to loosen up and stop whining about things not being 100% how they want them to be, especially when it is at NO cost to them. It is called life, not everything fits into a nice package that suits everyone perfectly.

I love the site and keep up the good work!!!

  21. JanieJones says:

I have to agree with aboleyn24, Adam’s post yesterday morning and Kermonk. I enjoy this site. I like to look at the numbers and articles. I think a great deal of hard work is put in this site. Mike the Canadian, are you serious? I don’t watch a drop of reality television. I’m an avid Burn Notice fan along with some other shows. I know a lot of women who watch BN!
