Scoreboard NBC Uni FOX ABC CBS CW
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 1.8/6 1.8/5 1.6/5 1.6/5 1.4/4 0.4/1
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 1.3/5 2.0/7 1.6/6 1.1/4 0.8/3 0.4/1
Total Viewers (million) 7.46 4.20 4.19 5.67 5.66 1.02

Once again, a Wednesday where the strength of America’s Got Talent NBC won the night, but no network could hit even a 2.0 rating with adults 18-49, though Univision managed a 2.0 with the adults 18-34 demo, and there’s a case to be made that strictly on a demo stats basis that Univision won the night.  I gave the edge to NBC due to a slightly higher share of 18-49 viewers.

The two hour Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage special on FOX pulled modest numbers. The 1.6/5 (rating/share) with adults 18-49 trailed NBC.  FOX notes that (excluding Univision) it won the night with the 18-34 year olds and women 18-34, and it did outperform last week’s reruns of Bones (1.3/5)  & Lie To Me (1.0/3).  Still: Octomom didn’t pull in the numbers like Jon & Kate Plus 8 in its heyday.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire averaged 6.88 million viewers and a 1.4/5 with the 18-49 crowd, slightly better than last week.and still  better than repeats of The New Adventures of Old Christine (1.2/4, 4.19  million) and Gary Unmarried (1.3/4, 4.06 million).  Still, a recap hour of America’s Got Talent tied for the 8pm hour lead  with a 1.6/5 and 6.59  million.

A new hour of America’s Got Talent at 9pm was the night’s most-watched show averaging 10.29 million viewers and a 2.4/7 (rating/share) with adults 18-49.  But it did seem to get hurt by Octomom as the 2.4/7 was the lowest rating of the summer.

At 10pm Primtime: Crime (1.5/5, 5.01 million) and a repeat of CSI: NY (1.5/4, 6.17 million) battled, while a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (1.4/4, 5.52 million) lagged slightly behind.

The CW ran two hours of America’s Next Top Model reruns and averaged a .4/1 with adults 18-49 and 1.0.2 million viewers.

Note: I know some people are very unhappy about the lack of data tables.  And I am very aware of this. But please hang tight for the rest of the summer.  We’ll figure out some better presentation by the time the fall season kicks off.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2009 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

If the Octomom special was done earlier, I’m sure it would have gotten much better numbers.

  • kev0170

probably but we have no proof of that barring the circumstances that occured at that time

  • ABCHasProblems

I thought Octomom would skew old (like Millionaire and AGT) instead of young (like SYTYCD).

  • kev0170

AGT doesnt skew old, it has a mixture

  • Anonymous

Octomom’s show didn’t have too much promo – I didn’t even know it was on until a few days ago to be honest (although Robert must be happy with the lack of ratings!)

I’m surprised AGT got hit by Octomom, but I’m sure the show will rebound next week.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Kev, it does skew old, though most shows on broadcast do. Last night at 9pm about 3.2 million out of 10.3 million were in the 18-49 range.

Anon: I can’t lie, I’m glad Octomom didn’t win the night overall :-)

  • kev0170

shameeee… i lost track of this since summer hit lol

  • kev0170

but i dont think that octomom special shudve come at this time tho because all of the octomom hype is gone and no one reli follows her anymore so FOX in my view basically got lucky that it got so much in the first place

  • Visan

I am soooo glad Octo-Dingbat lost out! Sick of her famewhoring!

  • gmyers

What were Octomom’s total viewer numbers? Are they a secret?

  • Mark

Robert, is ABC planning on moving Shark Tank on tuesdays when the fall season starts??

  • Danny

AGT has been a bit off the pace both nights this week and won’t actually be the top show of the week among 18-49′s (Hells Kitchen will be #1 this week). Can’t say I watch the show, so I’m not sure why.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? seems to have held onto the fairly low audience that it started out with. Pretty poor for Octomom, but probably better than whatever repeats FOX would have served up otherwise.

  • Marc

I am also happy that octomom did not do too steller, maybe plans to use her “fame” are now up for conversation and debate.

Rewarding a mother like this will be a downfall to society.

How many people out there will then try to have 9 children knowing that if they all survive, they are gauranteed to have a reality show.

Even if 0.001% of the population would give it a try, thats a few more than 1. And 1 is to many.

    We shouldn’t support these character’s in soceity….

gone is the bearded woman, gone is werewolf boy, gone is the tatooed, fattest, 2 headed lizard man….

    and so should the octomom!

  • JR

Yes, “Millionaires” ratings have been pretty consistent, on the whole. I’ve been watching. :) Both Tuesday episodes have seen the lowest ratings for the 9 nights thus far.

Week 1 (official numbers reported by ABC):
    7 million
    7.3 million
    6.1 million
    6.5 million
    7.2 million

Week 2 (numbers posted on this site):
    7 million
    6.97 million
    6.25 million
    6.88 million

  • CP

After that first girl (who I thought had a great shot at winning) got kicked off AGT, nothing else mattered to me for that show. Leverage was great though.

  • HogWash

I think that its amazing that AGT repeats the next night so well. I think that would be a good indication that NBC will bring it back in the Fall. I know they run repeats on Sunday’s all day on Oxygen, any idea how those repeats do? Anyone notice that they have advertised for new auditions?

  • TSA

Nice to see Millionaire gaining a LITTLE steam, anyway. What in the world gave Univision a performance like that?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Mañana Es Para Siempre at 9p and Don Francisco Presenta at 10p were Univision’s best performers last night

  • http://remotecontrolsyou.com Julia

My only hope is that this convinces whatever UK network that supposedly is willing to exploit Octomom’s children that it’s a very bad idea.

  • Kyle

I wish that the ratings were lower for the Octomom

  • LB

Octomom should not be on TV at all I wish it did worse. Allo those babies without a father how sad is that.

  • craiguk

    @Julia

Do you think for a minute this isn’t going to be a Sky1 special?

Almost zero cost for Murdoch to put it on Sky1.

Craig, there was talk of a multi-year documentary on these kids. That’s what I’m hoping this has put an end to.

  • Shem

Isn’t 10 mil low for Talent?

  • TSA

Thanks Rob. Can’t believe how strong a performance Univision pulls sometimes.

  • maggie

octomom gave her usual performance, flapping those big lips and acting stupid while the kid continually hit the cameraman and threw a tantrum, Was her mother the one in the trunk that she thought was so funny to hear roll around? This is a Jerry Springer show for sure. Why doesn’t she just take her shirt off its always down to her waist anyhow. This is in stark contrast to 18 and counting where the children actually mind and work in the home. These children will be in juvy by the time they are 8, she doesn’t believe in disipline. She sounds like a raving loon most of the time, Ratings??????????How can you rate something like this. I Thought it would be about the kids, saw very little of them, just the ones hitting the camera person and the one hiding and screaming, but the camera followed her all over and those nice nails sure don’t change many diapers!!!!!!!!!Whats the lowest rating you can get, give it to her!!!!!!

  • Jessica

I’m not surprised that Octomom did as well as it did; there actually is still quite a bit of interest out there and those who say they will never watch a show with her on it are first in line to see it. She is somehow fascinating to a good many people.

  • Robert

Do u guys have the ratings for the latest Nurse Jackie episode?

  • Brenda

How’s Jon & Kate plus Eight doing in the ratings? This is one show that really needs to be off the air. I used to watch it but no longer. It’s like watching a trailer park family (kids not included) Jon & Kate both, just listening to them now grates on my nerves.

  • richard less

America loves train wrecks. Just like they do high-speed chases where there’s a chance innocent drivers and pedestrians may get killed on live television.

  • richard less

I might add that I, too, am guilty of being fascinated by this (not so much by Octopest, but the car chases.)

  • Kathy B.

I finally got around to watching Mad Men. I’m still in awe.

  • moraliste

Why this sudden righteous indignation over that typical idiot Octomom. Are you just envious?? To me she’s just like Lyndie England, Lorena Bobbitt, or Condoleeza Rice … as sign of liberated times.I don’t care if the b***h has eight more kids, and makes you bleeding heart fools pay for each strained apricot. Go Octomom! Tax the morons more. Got good ratings, too… better than Men in Trees.

  • http://remotecontrolsyou.com Julia

Yes, having kids to feed your need for attention and then exploiting them for money. That sure is liberated!
