Not High School Musical 2 numbers, but 11.4 million is still big.  The biggest average audience on cable all year so far. Soon, Monday Night Football will knock it to second, but I’m guessing  Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie repeats better.

Think of how big iCarly: iFight Wizards of Waverly place would be!  But Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie is cable’s most-watched program in 2009, topping iCarly, and even Jon & Kate Plus 8, and thoroughly crushed last night’s broadcast competition in terms of viewers.

  1. Danny says:

Does 11.4m not mean that it’s the most watched show on all US TV this week? AGT had 11.2m on Tuesday and I can’t think of anything higher?

  2. 1245554412 says:

    yyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaa

  3. Justin says:

The Wizard’s of Waverly Place did very well in the ratings last night. I’m not surprised. It was an awesome movie. I would rate it a 10. I loved it. With 11.4 million viewers which is likely to be higher in the finals I can see Disney giving this movie a number 2. It’s the second highest movie on Disney Channel. It even beat High Schoool Musical 1. So if they do a number 2 I can see it beating High School 2 and if that’s successful maybe they’ll do a third for theatres. With 11.4 million viewers I can see it getting renewed passed season 3. I am so proud of the movie. Last night’s movie just made me want to watch all of the episodes of the series now. I’m so excited. It’s my one of my newest favourite show.

  4. Danny, unless there is some big surprise on Saturday or Sunday (Nielsen week goes through Sunday), it will be tops for the week in viewers.

  5. Danny says:

Thanks Robert. Pretty impressive for a kids movie on cable to be the #1 show but I suppose with the main networks having so little to offer over the summer, it will be happening more and more over the next few years. Disney will no doubt be looking for a sequel.

  6. breanna says:

    true coolness

  7. Chief says:

Disney promoted the hell out of this movie. TV/radio/print ads. Ads in malls. Huge online push. And they’ve been promoting it for months too, they didn’t just start promoting it in August.

  8. erin says:

I’M VERY HAPPY THAT THE MOVIE DID WELL. FOR A DISNEY MOVIE, IT WAS VERY GOOD AND HAD AMAZING ACTING. SELENA GOMEZ IS BY FAR THE BEST DISNEY ACTRESS OUT THERE AND I HOPE SHE WILL BE MORE SUCCESSFUL AFTER THIS. SHE’S VERY UNDERRATED AND THE FACT THAT THIS GOT 11.4 MILLION VIEWERS IS AMAZING!

  9. Ted says:

DAMN. Congrats to the cast of Wizards

  10. Bianca says:

I was expecting it to be bad, but this movie was really well-done. I actually teared up a little at the end, and I’m too old for that stuff. Embarrassing.

  11. lola says:

best movie ever! i have to know how they did it witch makes me glad that they will be showing how! i have to be an actress. can anybody hold additions that i could, maybe ,do? i wish i was a wizard. if we ever made a movie that seems at least half as cool as that (most unlikely but we’ll try) we might sell it at our store eco-eclectic and please if you go there buy something! oh and please please please tell me you can make a movie with me! i never did it before but i am sure i am a good actress.back to the basics. movie=awesome! Selena,Jake, and David=best ever!

  12. Alex S. says:

    That number is huge!

I wasn’t even expecting the number to be that big…

There’s just no stopping Disney Channel anymore…

Hopefully they’ll be number one in total day viewers this week as well.

  13. Alex S. says:

“Disney promoted the hell out of this movie.”

Disney’s marketing for the Wizards movie has been no different than any other Disney Channel movie before…

Disney always promotes the hell out of their movies months before their premiere…

“SELENA GOMEZ IS BY FAR THE BEST DISNEY ACTRESS”

Selena really did do an amazing job in the movie.

You really felt for her character and believed everything she said.

  14. Alexandra says:

This movie was really awesome, and I’m glad it got so many viewers!! It was, for the most part, original, and very entertaining. The acting was good, too! I cried at the end which is pretty embarrassing…. oph, and I loved how it was slightly complex, because it was from disney channel and usually disney channel makes things that are so simple they’re boring for me.

  15. breathee;; says:

unbelivable . The first time I saw the trailer, I thought it was ..ehhh . But then after watching, I was LITERALLY in shock . The cast had GREAT chemistry and the crying scene was very touching . I can’t see any other Disney star beating that .

  16. SteveV says:

Maybe this is a bad question, but if the Disney Channel isn’t ad supported (correct me if I’m wrong on this), why would an 11 million viewers be any different (or financially lucrative) for Disney than 5 million viewers?

I get the drive to be #1 network on cable, but aren’t they really out to get people to buy products in the store or go to the theme parks? I guess my questions are:

    1) If they are going to promote a movie like this starting in mid-summer, why not air it on ABC where they get more money for more viewers?

    2) Does the channel advertise its own products during the show? How does more viewers directly equal more cash for the network here? Or is just great the channel is drawing the eyeballs, which will eventually = more money for Disney.

  17. In terms of commercial advertising, it’s true Disney is not advertiser supported. Unfortunately since I didn’t watch I don’t know what was promoted or what in show product placement there was (Disney definitely promotes its own stuff though from theme parks to merchandise).

More viewers probably equals more money, but not in the same way it works with commercial advertising. Assuming they broadcast it additional times between Friday and Sunday I’m sure it will place several times in the weekly top 20/40. I think whether it’s Hannah Montana or whatever, between product placement and promoting their own stuff, more = better = more money..plus in this case it will sell a few DVDs.

As to why not have it on ABC, have you seen ABC’s summer ratings? It’s no slam dunk it would’ve done better there. And I think the audience that wanted to find it was going to find it wherever it airs (like the 17 million who watched HSM2 on Disney a couple of years back), though airing on ABC would have the advantage of allowing commercial sales. I think the reason they don’t do that and keep it on Disney is largely a branding thing and they don’t want Burger King and Subway ads being affiliated (through 30 second spots) with their content products. But I am just speculating and not completely sure of the rationale.

  18. Alex S. says:

    “isn’t ad supported”

Disney did show special ads for Sears and Sarah Lee Bread yesterday during the movie…

The only successful business model I think would make sense for Disney would be to charge a premium amount of money for the extremely limited ad space available on the channel.

  19. Alex, very interesting about Sarah Lee and Sears. Thanks for letting us know.

  20. Alex S. says:

Disney Channel has had special ads on the channel for a couple years now…

They’re not regular ads like those shown on any other channel on TV.

They’re like 5-second spots voice-dubbed to showcase the 3rd party brand and state that they’re a “proud sponser of Disney Channel.”

I’m sure Disney Channel charges a premium for those spots…

  21. Jon says:

That is great for Wizard of Waverly Place which I suspected would do well, Disney know their audience and it pays off through merchandise, DVD and music etc

  22. Chief says:

    <>

True, but maybe it was just me but I saw more advertising than I did for Princess Protection Program earlier this summer. I’m definitely not in the target demo for Disney, yet even *I* managed to see quite a bit of advertising for it. I’m sure tween girls saw ads for it everywhere they turned.

  23. Ron says:

How does Disney Channel make money without ads again?

  24. Shane says:

Disney makes money without advertisements easily.

    MERCHANDISING
    MERCHANDISING
    MERCHANDISING

Go into Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R US sometime.
You will see Hannah Montana, Wizards, Suite Life material EVERYWHERE. They can stick the logo on an Mp3 player and it will sell millions of products.

Remember how the newsmakers reported Hannah Montana was a $1 billion merchandising product. Exactly.

Remember how Hannah Montana’s albums have sold millions of copies. Exactly.

Promotion + Ratings = Merchandising Success = Billions and billions of money

I wish parents of these kids would stop being naive enough to succumb to the “Put a logo on it” merchandising-gimmick, but you can’t deny a kid.

  25. Catherine says:

Have you noticed that a number of kid oriented cable networks run big “shows” on Fridays?

Theoretically younger kids and probably their parents or older siblings who are baby sitting them are home on Friday nights so that is a smart move on their part. Also throw in that there were no kid friendly movies opening this weekend and you have great numbers.

I believe Disney is a network that gets subscriber money from the cable/dish systems that show them. If they have “special” sponsors too all the better for them. One would also imagine that there is a lot of revenue generated from a variety of items sold based on the shows. Think of how many High School Musical items there are.

  26. SteveV says:

Thanks Alex and Robert! Very helpful.

  27. Ron says:

Yes, but ESPN also gets subscriber money, but they show ads.

  28. AniMatsuri says:

Disney charges the cable provider more than your typical cable channel does. That’s probably one of the reasons they like reminding people what their ratings are to justify those high carrier charges.

Long ago Disney used to be a pay channel like HBO. Now we have the best of both worlds(where have I heard that before?), next to no advertising like on pay channel and access to anyone who has at least basic cable like ad supported cable channels.

  29. Brenda says:

They also advertised the new Wizards of Waverly Place CD that has just been released. And had the brand new Selena Gomez Video World Premier after the movie. Which will encourage many more kids to ask for it for birthdays and upcomoing Christmas. The Sears commercials have been going on for a while; there are 2 of them basically the same except that one has Selena in it. So that one shows up whenever Wizards is playing.
On another note, I was actually quite surprised by how good the movie was. We have become Disney Channel watchers lately as our children got interested in it and we only allow TV watching for them while we are with them. So we have gotten very comfortable with all the Disney shows.
This movie didn’t feel too juvenile and my husband and I actually discussed how our own sibling interactions were in childhood while watching it. So it definitely was engaging.

  30. mjadmirer says:

its a really cute movie. my 4 year old and myself loved watchting it thrice. the cast is really talented and the kids are awesome – selena is really beautiful and talented. justin is absolutely charming and max is cute – the family is really cute and the movie is well made. the kids have a good future.

  31. Kiara says:

YAY! i loved the movie. Im a 16 year old and it made me cry.. idk y.. is that lame?? haha.. selena gomez is an amazing actress, a lot of people dont like her just because she is on disney channel. so what? disney channel gave us hottie shia labuff (idk how you spell his last name) she is very dedicated to her acting.. i also love her style :D

  32. Ray says:

OMG! I Loved The Movie! I Work At Disneyland So I Had To TiVo The Movie. I Think Disney Could Go Bigger With This, The Waverly Place Cast Is So Talented, When I Say ‘Go Big’ I Mean A Theater Film. This Movie Turned On My Water Works (hard to do) But Also The Disneyland Fireworks Magical Show Has The Same Effect. For A Television Channel Movie The Graphics Blew Me Out Of the Water! Way To Go Disney I Give This A Non Bios Four Stars. Two Thumbs Up.

  33. Eddy564 says:

The ratings for this movie are amazing, though I think the movie deserved the ratings. The movie was original, the character interaction was interesting, and the special effects were much better than the actual show which is to be expected since they probably spent much more money since it was a movie. The cast must be celebrating, they really did do an amazing job, the emotion wasnt artificial and it actually had depth. My favorite part of the movie was the Wizard battle at the end with Alex and Justin, it was just so awesome seeing Alex and Justin use elemenal spells. I expected the movie to be pretty decent but not this great, its seems like a lot of you thought the movie was just as awesome as I do. This was definately one of the best Disney movies ever produced. Though this would of been a great series finally with some proper adjustments. They probably are planning on making a sequel due to the success of the first movie, lets just hope it will be just as good as the first!

  34. Eddy564 says:

Sorry… Was suppose to be elemental

    *Elemental*

  35. Delsy says:

Congratz to the wizzards cast they must be very pleased

  36. kaitie says:

What made this movie was not only it’s story line or devoted fan base, it was the brother sister relationship between Alex & Justin. You grow to love them both, but his movie shows us well that in times of trouble while the audience may take either character’s side, the characters themselves don’t & that is what makes this movie so great. I’m happy it did well! The show is the best on the Disney channel! It has the best writers i.e from 30 rock & actors i.e David Henrie & Selena Gomez.

  37. tdot says:

everything is not what it seems

  38. Bernard says:

This movie was awesome. I was amazed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Selena Gomez is the teen queen and the best actress in DISNEY. I have to say this – WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE THE MOVIE WAS BETTER than Hannah Montana The movie!! I loved this movie a lot. Wizards is also the best series of Disney and it always beats Hannah Montana. I’m so glad that it came at No. 1 telecast!! U should all agree with me that – SELENA GOMEZ IS THE BEST ACTRESS IN DISNEY!!! She’s the best. I’ll definitely buy the DVD.

  39. guadalupe says:
