90210

Scoreboard FOX NBC CBS ABC Uni CW
Rating: Adults 18-49 2.7/8 2.4/7 2.1/6 1.6/5 1.5/4 1.3/4
Rating: Adults 18-34 2.6/8 1.7/5 1.5/5 1.4/4 1.7/5 1.7/5

The CW started the 2009-10 “pre-season” with disappointing results, as the season premiere of 90210 drew only a 1.7 rating in the adults 18-34 demo (down 45% from the 3.1 rating for the 2 hour premiere last season), and the series premiere of Melrose Place managed only a 1.5 rating in the adults 18-34 demo. Lots more detail on the CW’s numbers below.

Once again it was Fox powered by Hell’s Kitchen topping NBC and others for the nightly ratings win.

More on the CW premiere numbers: 90210 had a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating / 4 share, 2.561 million average viewers, down 50% the 2.6/9 adults 18-49 rating it earned in its premiere last season. Melrose Place tallied a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating / 3 share / 2.270 million average viewers. That was slightly above the 1.2 rating / 3 share that the now-cancelled Privileged did in its premiere last fall.

Here’s lots of additional detail directly from the CW:

The second season debut of 90210 posted the show’s largest audience (2.6mil) since Jan 6, 2009.  This was also The CW’s best performance in the time period in key demos since Feb 2009.

90210 saw ratings growth in the key compared to where it finished its first season in May.  Versus its May average, 90210 was up 8% with women 18-34 (2.6/8), 13% in women 18-49 (1.8/5), 13% in adults 18-34 (1.7/6), 18% in
adults 18-49 (1.3/4) and 30% in total viewers.

90210 ranked second in the hour among women 18-34 and females 12-34 (2.3/8), behind only Fox.

90210 built at the half hour in every key demographic.

In a competitive time period of all original reality programming, the Melrose Place premiere ranked second in the hour among women 18-34 (2.5/7), behind only CBS.

Melrose Place’s women 18-34 performance out-delivered every Privileged telecast in the time period and all but two 90210 telecasts (the second hour of last years’ series premiere and the May 12, 2009 telecast).

MP held 96% of its 90210 lead in with women 18-34, and 88% in adults 18-34 (1.5/5), 100% in both adults 18-49 (1.3/3) and women 18-49 (1.8/5).  Melrose Place average 2.3million viewers.

MP was up 9% in women 18-34, 8% in adults 18-34 and %8 in adults 18-49 compared to the premiere of Privileged in the time period a year ago.

Overall, The CW ranked second from 8-10pm on Tuesday among women 18-34 (2.6/8).

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted ViewingProgram ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Ouch for Melrose Place, 90210 didn’t do as badly but still. I think they will get a full season, could see Life UneXpected in this slot by midseason.

America’s Next Top Model will do well as it always does but the real test is The Vampire Diaries and The Beautiful Life.

I think Melrose Place has a chance to improve over the next couple of weeks. Since nobody watched CW during the summer, it makes sense that it would take some time for word to filter out that the show had even started.

If Melrose Place and Vampire Diaries have numbers this low three weeks from now, you can look for the powers that be to pull the plug on CW sooner than people were thinking it could happen.

I fully expected low numbers for both 90210 and Melrose. 90210 despite having the most exposure out of every show last season on CW never managed to click with the audience. I’m afraid it will only go down from here just like it did last season.

Melrose accordingly never had a chance to premiere big. Last year we saw people were ready to give a chance to reboots of popular franchises, but everybody should’ve assumed that lighting won’t strike twice. Especially when people didn’t accept the first reboot all that well.

But from what I see on the net people liked MP premiere much more than 90210′s last year. So it might have a chance to improve or at least retain these numbers.

Um, Jackie, I think you need to lay off the caffeine.

I’m surprised CW did so horribly. I didn’t expect their numbers to look like this for another two weeks. Maybe next week at the earliest.

Wow, wow, wow! I totally despise the CW and it’s programming, but even *I* was expecting better 18-34 #s than that…and the worst part is, it’s all going downhill after this. I doubt the shows will grow much more from these numbers, although a gentle slide through the fall (as the competition heats up) is likely.

  • elusiveflare

i think Melrose will be canned after 13 episodes like 90210 alot of people tune in to the pilot because they atched the original then they tune out after the pilot because the CW versionss are no where near that good in my opinion 90210′s pilot was also quality wise much better than Melrose which also has a weaker cast

So with all the hype for Melrose Place 2.0 it only got that rating I guess I should not expect that Life UneXpected would survive come midseason. :(

  • Robert

WOW the CW must be pissed of with that. I thought 90210 would get those numbers but melrose place i thought at least would hit 3 million for the pilot.

“hmmm i think cw did awesome”

guess u must have low expectations then!

  • Robert

I really think the CW will be gone next yr.

  • Sean

Such a shame really because I actually enjoyed both of the shows last night, 90210 in particular… it’s drastically improved in writing and it’s seemed to have found itself. I hope it keeps afloat.

Melrose Place wasn’t fantastic but it was intriguing and entertaining enough.

It’s difficult though because we don’t know whether The CW will take these numbers as a success because in 90210′s case, it’s the best they’ve seen their numbers in a while and both show are certainly doing better than what alot of their shows were doing earlier this year. It’s just a case of holdover and seeing as both show seem to be getting positive reactions, there could be staying power and maybe word of mouth may even increase ratings. Maybe I’m being hopeful.

I hope Glee does well tonight. Only these 3 shows I’m interested in for this week until the return of Grey’s, Housewives, Brothers & Sisters and of course Lost next year. Might check out another new show soon.

guys i don’t think anyone at the CW is all that happy with 2.5 million viewers not that it matters.
they’re after their key demo of 18-34 which wasn’t all that stellar either compared with last year’s premiere. wonder what the women 18-34 rating will be

Yeah those numbers and the overall demo’s are disappointing. Now if they managed those demo’s all year long then no big deal, but shows typically lose viewers across the board during the year (especially in the spring).

Wednesday and Thursday do better, how long before Smallville is taken off Friday to replace either one of these programs (or moved back to Thursdays) to pair one with Vampire Diaries?

Be very, very curious to see the performance of Wednesday and Thursday.

Ouch in the ratings for Melrose, I don’t think anyone though it would lose viewers from 90210. In fairness though, 90210′s premier was a lot, lot better than all of it’s first season. Centering the series on Naomi,Silver & Adrianna rather than the Wilson family was a good move. It even allowed Shenae Grimes to shine with Annie being isolated from everyone else. The new theme tune has to go though.

Melrose Place meanwhile was awful (and I loved the original). While the murder plotline is a good hook, the other plotlines were boring and none of the characters had any spark to them, save maybe Katie Cassidy’s character. It was only about halfway through that I even realised the female Doctor wasn’t the same character that was going out with the film maker guy and the acting skills of some of the cast, in particular Shaun Sipos and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, was dreadful. Heather Locklear was sensible to stay away, and unless she show’s up mid-season I can’t see this making the back 9.

Folks, while I am sure we will see a CW PR release today emphasizing all the positive aspects of last nights numbers, looking at what we have now it’s got to be a disappointment for them. 90210 was down 45% in the overall 18-34 demo from last season’s premiere.

Realistically though, there was never a chance anyone thought it was going to match last year’s premiere. It went down about that much to it’s second episode last year so I am going to call 90210′s numbers good and Melrose’s mediocre.

What’s with these people who feel the need to bash Chuck whilst trying to defend the CW? Did they drink the CW kool-aid. I enjoy 90210 but those numbers sucked and the show is no where near as good as Chuck.

They should have kept Reaper instead of doing Melrose Place. If you have to keep a show with low ratings at least they could have kept one I enjoyed. It was at least a steady performer too.

Folks, while I am sure we will see a CW PR release today emphasizing all the positive aspects of last nights numbers, looking at what we have now it’s got to be a disappointment for them. 90210 was down 45% in the overall 18-34 demo from last season’s premiere.

I don’t think they were expecting it to do nearly that well. 90210 premiered big for them last year but dropped quickly after the first episode (and all the nostalgia viewers left). Last night’s 18-49 numbers were just a little lower than what it was getting last fall (I haven’t takent the time to find the 18-34 for last fall).

I do think the numbers are disappointing for them, but I don’t think it’s quite as dire as the premiere-to-premiere difference makes it seem. I think they are even more disappointed in the Melrose numbers given the effort they put into the hype on that.

Of course, the press release will still tout how they were number 1 in girls 18-34 named Jenny.

Is the CW dead yet? Can we call it dead now?

CW has been dead to me since they axed VERONICA MARS and GILMORE GIRLS. I gave it another chance with REAPER, and then they took that away from me too.

Watching the CW slowly die is going to give me great delight…although they *are* the best network in my area in terms of airing syndicated shows…hmm…nah, I’d still rather see them implode.

Frank i’d hafta disagree with you
the cw is moving towards a niche group of shows and moving farther and farther away from variety
notice how all the shows on its schedule is in one way or another the same (save for Supernatural)
    - rich, spoiled, young, beautiful people

It makes me laugh when The CW print numbers, they try to make even the most epic failures sound like huge successes.

It sounds like they’re going to be plugging 90210 now and maybe let Melrose Place slowly fade unless it’s holdover is impressive?

    Ok

You do realize that must shows actually peak with their season opener achieving ratings higher then they managed during the spring the previous year. Out of all the CW produced shows here are the number of episodes they had that were higher then their season opener.

    Gossip Girl – 1 episode
One Tree Hill – 5 episodes
    90210 – Zero episodes
    Privileged – Zero episodes
Tom Model – Is the only CW show where the majority of their episodes out performed the season opener.
    Smallville – 1 episode
    Supernatural – Zero episodes
    Stylista – Zero Episodes
Fear is Real – Zero Episodes
    Reaper – 2 episodes
Hitched or Ditched – 1 episode

So yes we understand that 90210 numbers are higher then they have been since 01/06/09 (for total viewers and adults 18-49), and 2/3/09 for adults 18-34.

But the odds are great that those numbers will be lower throughout the entire year.

    @Frank
also the numbers of 90210 have drastically risen

When? Because the premiere did better than the last (and lowest rated) month of last season? That’s actually normal since most shows have bigger premieres and drop in the spring after daylight savings time.

Wow. My ratings predictions for last night’s premieres (90210 2.65m, Melrose 3.10) were lower than the majority of posters but these programs managed to do even worse than I thought it would.

It seems to be a shame for Melrose Place because so many people I knew were skeptical and/or dismissive of the show, watched it last night, and were very pleasantly surprised in the end.

ALSO: Thanks for the troll blockage, Robert.

Ndolger said (or rather repeated since VM fans parrot this constantly):

“CW has been dead to me since they axed VERONICA MARS and GILMORE GIRLS.”

First – the CW wanted another season of Gilmore Girls. They couldn’t cut a deal.

And Veronica was barely pulling 2 million – if that! – toward the end there. Add in that they totally squandered the supporting cast in Season 3, and that VM:FBI presentation was one of the worst pieces of television I’ve ever seen, and I think axing Veronica was one of the smartest moves Dawn Ostroff ever made.

And I was a HUGE Veronica fan when it started. Loved Season 1.

Surprised. I didn’t think MP would be nearly as big as 90210 last year since people tried the Kool-Aid of soapy reboot and most didn’t stay, but I thought there would at the very least be more people curious about MP than people who stayed around for what most seem to think is a lackluster show (90210).

I will say that for the CW those are good young adult #’s…Big Brother beat AGT in young adults.

Maybe they should try New shows with new stories instead of doing copies of shows that were a sucess a long time ago…Most of the people who watched those shows years ago, don’t want to watch a copycat of those , and the younger people just want new stuff. Anyway i am looking forward Vampire Diaries ratings , I think that if CW don’t do well with the Vamp show, now that everything Vamp is a sure sucess, then CW should close business.

The second season debut of 90210 posted the show’s largest audience (2.6mil) since Jan 6, 2009. This was also The CW’s best performance in the time period in key demos since Feb 2009.

Translation: The only good thing we can say about these numbers is that they are better than when we were going up against Idol!

It boggles my mind when people root for shows to fail. I think if you have no interest in the show, you shouldn’t even waste your breathe commenting about it.

And despite some of the comments here hoping it gets cancelled, I think the CW will give MP a full season.

This comment goes for Don. I watch 90210 and I’ll give Melrose a shot, but the reason why I’m happy 90210/MP duo basically failed and fell flat on their face is because maybe CW will finally grow some balls and try with new and interesting show concepts rather than masking the same teen recipe over and over again.

I was psyched when WB and UPN announced they were merging. I really thought they would benefit and make for a one strong network. Unfortunately they didn’t adopt any of the WB image or any of the UPN image. I still don’t know what CW is about. They say women, but they’re really only fooling themselves.

Not a teenager here, but they were babies when the original was on. It does not have any nostalgic appeal for them like it would for us in (uh hem) an older demographic. CW can only hope they can build the audience. Given CW’s history with other programming, sucess would be surprising. Their target demographic is fickle and too busy texting!

While we have only 2 years of experience on the site, one thing that the CW has shown is that they don’t pull shows out of their lineups early. Whether that’s patience or lack of options is debatable. The exception being last season when the entire Sunday lease deal with MRC collapsed, reportedly for financial reasons, but the ratings certainly weren’t good.

Why do they keep remaking stuff? They need to fire this Dawn woman that is in charge of programming.
Melrose was pretty good. Likeable and Hot cast. Will give it a few more trys.
    90210 is still horrible.

I think the movie business has a lot to do with it. They either keep making sequels to things that don’t need to be made, or remakes of things that didn’t need it (Halloween comes to mind). They’re remaking everything, from Conan and Red Sonja to possibly another Buffy movie. Someone mentioned a Justice League show, there was a live action show years ago but they only made a handful of episodes and Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman weren’t in it.

Tom, I don’t think this was the season finale (maybe week before the finale?), but this is the latest I could find from the first season without making too much effort:

FRESHMAN POSTS BEST DEMOS TUESDAY AT 9

May 13, 2009 (Burbank, CA) The CW’s 90210 continued to build momentum in the Tuesday night 9 p.m. time period, posting its best ratings in a number of key demographics.

The show scored a 2.7/7 among women 18-34, 1.7/4 among female teens, 1.7/4 among women 18-49 and 2.1 million total viewers, all series highs in the time period.

The “Zero Tolerance” episode of 90210 encores tonight at 9 p.m.

Sometimes I wish the friggin’ CW would just tank and disappear. I get so tired of hearing about how they can’t get ratings. It’s the same song and dance everytime they air anything at all. If it’s as bad as all that, why do they still exist? When will the time come to throw in the towel?

Shows that trend upwards are so much rarer than shows that trend downards from the premiere and never recover.

Also this was the SERIES PREMIERE, it should have been able to at least add on more viewers than 90210, from curiousity and nostalgia if nothing else. If it had been an episode in November then we might be sitting here talking about how decently it was holding up. But it’s not. It’s the premiere, which had a ton of promotion, against almost zero real competition and it couldn’t even outpace what the CW considers ok, let alone hit 3-4 million. Privileged got higher ratings, and that is not something the CW will want to be remembering right now.

At least 90210 can claim consistancy.

@ Chis, the problem is, CW don’t build up audience, they loose it. It started weak, so it’s either gonna go down, or stay the same. But it won’t get better, not by airing ads on a 2.5 millions network… or on supernatural and smallville.

I really expected at least 3 million viewers for the series premiere for MP. 2.27 is something that I thought will be its season average but to start with that? Then where it will go from here? Especially when the real competition stars. So I guess MP will average around 1.8 million viewers and 1.0 in the demo. That was really disappointing numbers especially that the show is an established brand.
But I guess if the show continues to hold on decently on 90210′s women 18-34 audience this will still get a full season renewal.

I guess the producers will not try to get Heather Locklear ever more

I don’t understand how people can seriously “hate” a channel–unless they work for another. Get real.

90210′s premiere was awesome. Much better than last season, I read somewhere that the story is being restructured to take out the plotline of the older castmates and making it more hip.

Melrose Place was dull. Looks like a lot of people turned off their TVs in agreement.

Also, they are playing Melrose Place two more times this week–either that will bring in more viewers for the second episode, or completely turn them away…

The story on Melrose Place is, it had such strong international sales, it will be around a couple of years. It would have to drop off the Neilsen scale to be canceled.

Melrose will get a full year anyway. This season The CW has compatibility in their nights. Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill are compatible teen dramas, 90210 and Melrose are both remakes of the Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place, ANTM and Beautiful Life (while one reality and one drama) both focus on Models, Vampire Diaries and Supernatural are both horror thrillers, and that just leaves veteran Smallville on fridays. Without comedies nor a sunday block to worry about my guess is that every new drama will get a full season or additional episodes.

    Melrose Place – 24 episodes
    Vampire Diaries – 22 episodes
The Beautiful Life – 18-20 episodes

Well they still have the midseason drama Life UneXpected. But I don’t see how will the CW schedule that. Fridays after Smallville? The reviews for that show is strong and I’m looking forward to it although I know that the show has a little chance of survival.

Let’s see next week’s numbers for MP, the repeats for this week might help it gain more exposure

Well, with both Hell’s Kitchen and America’s Got Talent having started weeks ago and in the midst of their competitions, if people had been watching either of those all summer then it stands to reason they would not tune to a new show while these competitions are not done yet. I think that was also a factor in CE ratings. I watched Melrose Place and did not think it was bad. Premieres the day after a holiday and night before first day of school in many places could also be factors.

forg – CW may likely schedule Life UnXpected to air after America’s Next Top Model in March after The Beautiful Life finishes its season, like how Reaper replaced Privileged last March. If Beautiful Life gets an 18 episode season it could finish early and make room for Life UnXpected. Melrose and Diaries will probably stay in their respective slots until May but Beautiful life strikes me as a short lived Privileged. While ANTM is on Break from December-March, Blonde Charity Mafia is likely to fill the slot. Here’s what the schedule might look like in January.

I thought Melrose Place was great, and also, this is part of a bigger problem in the television industry in that the Nielsen system itself is well known as not being accurate since it only measures 10,000 households. And what is the population of the United States? Close to 305 MILLION PEOPLE. And it’s also why TV networks are banding together in search for a more accurate ratings system. But the buzz for Melrose Place was undeniable, it was a #1 Twitter topic for weeks leading up to the premiere EW said, and buzz translates to advertising money for the CW, as well as the well known name Melrose Place, that guarantees it’s continuation since it will be sold to countries around the world (that’s the only thing that’s keeping 90210 afloat). Not wasting my time reading any douchey replies to this message…

forg – I don’t see Melrose or Vampire Diaries getting replaced, so it seems likely that Life UnXpected would air wednesdays when Beautiful Life completes its run. The CW knows that fridays are low ratings so they wouldn’t waste a good series to air at 9. They just moved Smallville there because, its a veteran series, its likely to end this year, and its high rated so it may bring back viewers to fridays. Another reason they air ANTM repeats fridays is because since its a reality show, when it airs wednesdays its never a repeat so the only time to watch an encore is fridays at 9. Life UnXpected could fail or be renewed but its likely based on what The CW’s plans are for 2010-2011. Melrose Place and Vampire Diaries seem like long term series that CW would want to keep in the same slots for a while. Compatibility between shows doesn’t always occur but it usually helps.

Isabel, web hype means little to nothing in ratings. While you may claim that Nielsen system is flawed (and it almost certainly is), it plays by all the rules for general statistic and it’s still the best way to measure ratings. It’s normal networks will say Nielsen is bad from time to time, but if they really thought they could do it better, they would’ve done it by now.

If you look at Box Office, often you can see that huge web buzz can’t really point to a successful movie, as there were few bombs with huge web buzz. I don’t see why the same wouldn’t happen in TV business. I also wouldn’t put out the option that CW themselves twitted or at least payed people to do it. That’s nothing illegal and I don’t think it would be an expensive promotion and it gets people talking.

I already said that it was logical to expect low premiere numbers for MP. Not because CW started the season early (it did wonders for them last year, so that argument is silly and I really don’t see why people grasp to it) or because it was the day after the holiday (ask Sons of Anarchy). People were willing to give a shot to 90210 last year. They didn’t like what they saw and the ratings collapsed. Reboot of Melrose Place was basically something no viewer wanted and the ratings illustrate that. I’m afraid it will only go down from here.

Oh and I saw 90210 and MP. 90210 was the same it was last season. No better, no worse, just mediocre itself. Melrose was good dumb fun, but I don’t think the series will have an upswing in viewers with this level of quality.

Melrose Place actually wasn’t bad at all. I stopped watching 90210 because the women were unattractive pink skeletons who looked like bulimic 13 year olds. At least Melrose has women with curves.

I laughed when I saw old Dr. Mancini in the show :)

I laughed when I saw old Dr. Mancini in the show :)

There’s a saying that goes “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting it to come out different”

Apparently Dawn Ostroff has never heard it.

Last year, she decided to resurrect 90210, and while it garnered some initial curiousity, it quickly petered out, and ratings and interest faded. Even with original cast members dropping in. So, what did Dawn decide to do? Resurrect Melrose Place, and try to do the exact same thing that didn’t work for her the first time.

Why would anyone, including Dawn, be surprised at the lack of interest?

The season 1 launch for 90210 last year was so high because it was a new thing to do. Take a massive show like 90210, reboot it, bring back iconic cast members etc thats why so many tuned in for it.
The drop off in the 2nd week was by the people who just tuned in for the novelty of it all and then 90210 hit its average at around 2 and a half million. 90210 season 2 had good numbers for the show so they will be happy.

MP would never get the ratings 90210 had on its 1st episode because the hype about rebooting shows is over, especially after 90210 proved to be so mediocre (though it has got much better)

I would have though MP would have launched with just under 3 million so they are down on that, but i dont think we will see such a big drop off like we did with 90210. Also its repeated this week so will pick up new viewers and i have a feeling the DVR figures will be high.

The only reasons I ever watch the new 90210 are because a)there’s nothing else on b)I’m just too lazy to change the channel or c)because it’s filmed on my block and right around the corner from me so I get to shout out loud (to myself), “Hey! I know that place! Hey that’s NOT Beverly Hills, that’s Redondo Beach!” :P But this new Melrose Place makes 90210 look like Emmy material. I found it to be poorly executed from just about every angle. I expected cheese, I expected over the top, I expected scandal…but it all felt forced and artificial. Bad writing, weak acting…just WEAK overall. Not that I really expected much more from it…but eh… LOL I can’t wait for fall/winter TV!

The CW is probably gonna be gone soon. Not now or next season but maybe within the next 5 years. Once the remaining UPN series like ANTM, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural end. Then The CW will likely tank. With the exeption of Top Model, they can’t expect these 3 veteran dramas to continue holding the network up. Smallville will end this season, One Tree Hill and Supernatural could be on its way out after 10-11. So Gossip Girl, 90210, Melrose Place and Vampire Diaries really need a turn around this year.
