Cable ratings: USC, VMAs, iCarly and True Blood finale…

Posted on 15 September 2009 by Robert Seidman

Kanye-West-Taylor-Swift-MTV-VMAs

USC vs. Ohio State led weekly cable viewing on Saturday night averaging over 10.58 million viewers. Next was the 2009 Video Music Awards on MTV that averaged 8.97 million (does not include the simulcast on MTV2 and VH1).   A Labor Day Monday night college matchup between Miami and Florida state rounted out the top three.

The return of iCarly (I believe its 3rds season opener) averaged 7.56 million  A Scooby Doo: Mystery Begins movie helped push TOON into the top 10 shows with 6.11 million average viewers.   An airing of The O’Reilly Factor on the heels of last week’s presidential address led it and its 5.129 million viewers just ahead of the season finale for True Blood on HBO with its 5.114 million.

As of this writing I have only seen the weekly top 40 shows, and other than press releases and other blurbs posted on the site last week, don’t have information on any other shows yet, but expect to have additional data later in the morning (California time) and will update this post with some additional info when I have it….

67 Responses to “Cable ratings: USC, VMAs, iCarly and True Blood finale…”

  1. Ron says:

Could I find out how Behind the Music did on VH1?

  2. Jon says:

That is good for True Blood but the week off really damaged it, Scooby Doo did well for Cartoon Network and I expect more TV Movies are on the way. iCarly did well as usual too.

Any Leverage and Dark Blue ratings please?

  3. anonymous says:

I’m still amazed, like every week, by how well Army Wives does, considering that it has ZERO buzz around it. And I like that(even if I’ve never watched the show)

  4. Jim says:

How did Total Drama Action(Cartoon Network Sunday at 9) and Ben 10: Alien Force(Friday at 8) do?

  5. Jon, I’m sure that information has already been posted in the site, but its probably buried in the comments of last Wednesday’s overnight post for broadcast. When I see the expanded basic cable results I’ll add them to the post. Probably in a couple of hours or so…

  6. huddy80 says:

That was pretty low showing for True Blood finale, is it not? I thought for sure it would get at least 6 million or more viewers. It was a great finale, next summer can’t come soon enough!

I was really shocked to see O’Reilly twice on the list. Can’t believe that many people tune in to watch him, but can say I am one of them.

  7. Shelley says:

Did you guys read the article? He says to wait a few hours, he hasn’t seen everything yet. Cut Mr. Seidman a break!

  8. Number Cruncher says:

I have nothing to request this week. Basically I just came to look at the True Blood finale numbers.

  9. forg says:

The VMAs could have hurt True Blood’s ratings I guess. I was expecting 6 million too for the season 2 finale considering the momentum it had kind of underwhelming to end the season with 5.114 million viewers but good numbers nevertheless

  10. Jon says:

Robert, I managed to find the Leverage and Dark Blue so thanks for directing me.

Is Scooby Doo, one of the highest ratings for Cartoon Network aside from The Clone Wars? Does argue the case for Live Action content.

  11. Sharon says:

Mad Men numbers as soon as you get them please.

  12. Ron says:

Also if possible the Real World Cancun finale on Wednesday night at 10pm EST on MTV. Thanks!

  13. Zac says:

    Top Chef?

  14. ABC Family fan says:

When you get them, can we see numbers for Greek, 10 Things, Secret Life and Ruby & the Rubbish? Thanks in advance.

  15. nickandmore says:

Can I request “The Troop” on Nickelodeon, Saturday at 8:30pm after the new iCarly? It’s a new Nick show.

  16. David says:

Rock on iCarly! Those are great ratings.

  17. rebkell says:

I would like to request Warehouse 13 and Eureka, I searched, but didn’t find any numbers for them. As always, I appreciate the work you do here.

  18. Andrea2 says:

I wonder how the Hallmark new Original Movie Citizen Jane did on Saturday night.
With Hallmark usually they issue a press release if their telepic gets more than 2m and when they stay silent, you can guess it’s under 2m.

  19. j says:

So on top are sports, VMA’s, & iCarly…I wonder what the top kids’ show average season viewers ever is on cable. It might be an earlier one of Hannah Montana, given how huge her concert was awhile ago? Now her singles are doing significantly better than her albums.

In total, True Blood’s seasonal average puts it above two of Buffy’s seasons, the first & last. Please don’t insult either show; I’m just comparing two vampire-oriented shows on networks whose ratings can’t compete with the Big 4.

  20. I’m doing separate posts for these requests. Mad Men, Syfy Shows and ABC Family shows already done.

  21. TVBill says:

DROP DEAD DIVA, if you can please? :-)

@anonymous Yeah, no buzz at all. Zippo. But ARMY WIVES does have a very loyal audience. (And the VMAs had little effect on total viewers this week — that 3.9 is above the season average.)

  22. David says:

    Lizzie McGuire ratings, please????

  23. Delsy says:

Yes i want the Lizze ratings too please. Very happy for iCarly they will crack 10 million sooner or later

  24. Jalen People says:

Can i please have numbers for Meet the Browns on TBS?

  25. RJ says:

Highest episode of Chelsea Lately, please? :)

  26. Lenny says:

I want to know how Nickelodeon’s The Troop did. Very good for iCarly.

  27. Lenny, if the retentionistas analyzed “The Troop” for its retention out of iCarly, like they do with some shows on the broadcast networks, it would get ugly. But outside of that “The Troop” had decent numbers — 3.487 million.

  28. Lenny says:

Thanks, Lenny. Really appreciate the info.

  29. silvia says:

Hi. I would like to request Real Chance of Love 2 numbers and also The Real World Cancun The S#!t They Should’ve Shown special. Thanks in adavance. ~ Silvia.

  30. Bing says:

    VMA definitely hurt True Blood.

  31. Behind The Music =1.317M
    Top Chef: 2.792M
    Drop Dead Diva: 3.082M
    Total Drama Action: 3.502M
    Meet The Browns: 2.644M
    Best Lizzie M: 2.174M
    Best Chelsea Lately (Tues):1.079M

  32. ThundaPC says:

I meant to get here earlier. I’m interested in seeing how Surviving Disaster on Spike TV (Last Tuesday 10pm) did? Do you have the numbers for it?

  33. Ron says:

I know I requested two, but Real World finale, please? Just because its the finale.

  34. Ron, those numbers were posted last week somewhere. 2.049 million

    Surviving Disaster on Spike, 685K

  35. Eric (Ohio) says:

Sad that the True Blood finale was the worst episode of the season (content, not ratings).

  36. Number Cruncher says:

I think the Real Chance of Love 2 numbers that Silvia is requesting is from the episode last night (which I’m aware Robert would not have). There was no new episode of Real Chance of love 2 last Monday because of the holiday.

  37. William says:

Bill Engvall Show Ratings? Pleause. If You have them?

  38. Jose says:

What about a rerun of Fairly OddBaby on Monday September 7 on Nickeloden? Thanks for all the work guys!

  39. Jose says:

To add to my previous post it was at 12. Just trying to be as specific as possible.

  40. Nick says:

Robert, is it just me or is iCarly beginning to out-rate Hannah Montana? 7.6 million viewers? are you serious? that episode sucked and so was not worth the hype. what a crappy way to off their third season but great ratings. Hannah Montana is still the better show to me, but which ones has had higher ratings recently?

PS. since when did iCarly get this big? last year the show opened to 4 million viewers and now this years it almost 8 million, its insanity!

  41. Jason says:

Robert can you please post the best rating for The Wendy Williams Show on BET? Thanks!

  42. Sarah says:

Nick, iCarly has almost always out-rated Hannah Montana except for the odd episode here or there. Hannah Montana obviously is a higher-profile show due to Miley’s fame, but when it comes to ratings, iCarly has pretty consistently out-performed it (there are some weeks where REPEATS of iCarly do better than the Disney shows). This isn’t a new development. iCarly has been big for quite a while now.

Also, looking back at Disney’s ratings, Wizards of Waverly Place seems to be it’s hottest show right now. WoWP ALSO seems to out-rate Hannah a lot of the time.

As for which show is better, I guess that comes down to personal preference. I think iCarly and Wizards of Waverly Place are far superior to Hannah when it comes to acting and writing, but that’s just my opinion. People will never agree on stuff like that.

  43. Nick says:

Hannah Montana used to average about 5 million viwers for new episodes and about 3 million for repeats. iCarly had about 3 to 4 million for new episodes and about the same for repeats.

iCarly’s first season never out-rated Hannah Montana, but it seems like the ratings really started to pick up for Carly earlier this year toward the middle of its second season. Now the shows just suddenly averaging 7.6 million when at this time last year it was barley getting 4 to 5 million? thats huge improvement in just one year.

Hannah is still Disney’s highest rated show, i think, or is it Wizards? either way, it still is a big powerhouse for Disney and although it has been slipping since early this year they numbers still arent that bad.
I noticed during 2008 there werent too many new episodes of Hannah for a while and new episodes didnt start airing regularly until November last year when the third season started. but it seems like the show has always started the season strong, then goes through a dry spell, and goes back up again toward the end of each season. Hannah still has 6 episodes left of its third season and it will start it’s Final Season in the Spring, well see how the numbers hold up i guess.

its only a matter of time before both shows end, i think they are both in their last seasons. Thier was a rumor last month that carly was ending soon. Carly still hasnt gotten a 3rd season, mainly because the episodes airing as the “third season” are hold over episodes from the 45 that were produced in the second production cycle. but if it can hold up it might get renewed.

  44. Jalen People says:

    thanks!

  45. Nick says:

Wizards got a huge boost recently because of the Movie which was promoted over-and-over again for months before its premiere. new Hannah episodes over the summer averaged 5.2 million, over 7 new episodes. iCarly aired 4 new episode over the summer and they averaged 4.9. Sheby Marx got 7.9 and Date a Bad Boy got 6.5, but the other two episode only got like 4.5 million. Superstitious Girl for Hannah Montana got 9.3 and He Could Be The One got 6.9. the regular episodes got around 4.5 million.

i just checked the total data, carly does top Hannah for the season, but Hannah topped carly for the summer.

well, i guess i like Hannah because although its overrated and Miley makes bad decisions, its still a funny kids show and the actign isnt that bad.plus the new episodes are much better than the first two seasons. Wizards only has two seasons and the first one sucked and most of the second one was alright, but they rerun it everyday and it doesnt have enough episodes to be shown everyday. Hannah and Wizards are always the same reruns but at least Hannah has more episodes to watch. overall Hananh is the only show out of the 2 that actually is award winning and has an more known cast. Wizards writing is better, but Hannah episodes as more interesting because with Wizards you just know Alex is gonna screw up a spell and on Hananh there is a more equal focus on both the Miley and Hannah storylines. when it first came out their werent many shows about singing teenager living two lives, so to me its just more original. iCarly is great, but my god it rerun more than any other show on Nick or Disney.

  46. William says:

Bill Engvall Show Raitings. Sasturday night at 9… Anybody?

  47. Sarah says:

Wasn’t the “Superstitios Girl” episode of Hannah part of the giant crossover with Suite Life on Deck and Wizards? So that’s more of a combined effort whereas with iCarly we’re talking about just a regular, 22 minute episode getting 7 million. Now the question is how long iCarly can sustain the ratings. I don’t think the next episode with quite manage ratings like this week, though, since this was the season premiere and was promoted relentlessly.

Oh and it’s been confirmed by Dan Schneider, the creator of iCarly, that they’ve been given the green light for season 4 and they’ll be back in production soon enough after the hiatus, so I don’t think they’re under any pressure.

I think Wizards is really Disney’s biggest show right now, especially after it won the Emmy (though I’m not saying Hannah isn’t successful for them as well) and the better-than-expected ratings for the movie. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it the highest rated DCOM after High School Musical 2?

  48. tvmegafan says:

True Blood was AMazing. I don’t get it thought, Everyone got what they wanted and still all they do is COMPLAIN. I wish the numbers were higher but still it’s almost double what the premier was so thats still An Atomic achievment..can’t wait to see entourage’s numbers disolve as true blood wont be leading them in anymore.

  49. tvmegafan says:

Damn VMA’s… they sucked anyway, Everyone shoulda been watchin True Blood!

  50. Dan says:

Tvmegafan, True Blood is great, imma let you finish but Hung is one of the best television series of all time. Of all time…

  51. Dee says:

Hey Robert do you know the ratings for Nickelodeon’s sneak peak of “The Troop”? It aired right after the new episode of iCarly

  52. Dee says:

Never mind robert. i found them

  53. Jon says:

How the hell does The O’Reilly Factor keep getting such good numbers? Are people just tuning in to see if that vein in his head will finally explode?

Seriuosly though, that must be the most profitable show on cable – it surely costs virtually nothing to make compared to the dramas/animations etc that dominate the rest of the top 20.

  54. David says:

Thank you for the Lizzie ratings, these numbers are good, like to serie’s old numbers :)

  55. David says:

Sarah yes, Wizards The Movie was second highest rated DCOM, just behind HSM 2. And, I think Wizards is better than Hannah Montana, Selena are a very good actress, the serie have a huge sucess, deserve it.

  56. Dan says:

Wizards seems to be becoming the next Hannah Montana popularity wise, lets see what happens once Hannah Montana ends next year.

  57. Drew says:

The TB finale was one of my favorite episodes. Lots of Anna Paquin really helped.

I bet next year premieres at about 6.5 to 7 million. Obscenely high numbers for HBo? Yep, but season 2’s premiere was 150% of the season 1 finale. 6.5-7 million means 1.5-2 mil more viewers, which we can get.

  58. Delsy says:

Wizards may be the biggest now but it will soon go down again it was the biggest last year in summer -October too look what happened…

  59. Delsy says:

Also correct me if i am wrong but didn’t the last hannah show get more than wizards. Wizards has been hyped because of the movie but it is not going to last. I like wizards dough

  60. Travis says:

How’d the ESPN2 12Noon game last Saturday between CMU and MSU do? That was CMU’s first national tv appearance on ESPN on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks for your hard work!

  61. Dan says:

Delsey – Hannah Montana has 5 more episodes left from it’s third season then a 13 episode fourth and final season scheduled to begin airing in 2010. By the time Hannah Montana ends, Wizards of Waverly place will become Disney Channel’s new flagship series in popularity.

  62. Anthony says:

Don’t forget that the True Blood number seen here is only for the 9pm airing. I always caught the show at later airings and I suppose others that night did as well. I bet those late night HBO ratings were higher than usual as the competition at that prime time slot on September 13 was very tough with NFL and MTV.

  63. Dan says:

Also True Blood did really well since it aired in the summer, and its only competition was L&O: Criminal Intent. Had it aired against Desperate Housewives, Football, or Family Guy this fall numbers may not have been so high.

  64. ohiogirl says:

I think the ratings difference between ICarly and Hannah Montanna comes down to this fact: When my youngestteenage daughter is watching ICarly, my older two (boy and girl), will stop, laugh, and eventually sit down and watch with her. When Hannah Montanna is on, they keep on walking. They seem to like the fellow that plays her older brother, and her wise cracking best friend. Carly herself is secondary…therefore, it must be the multi-age ensemble cast. Hannah Montanna pretty much carries her show herself, with Billy Ray assisting. Nothing there for the male or older teen audience.

  65. ohiogirl says:

It’s interesting to me that the Monk audience doesn’t seem to carry over for Psych. Although the humor is different, they are both quick witted ‘who-done-its’that deliver both good laughs and a little intrigue, that make for a nice evening of entertainment. I think Psych is due an Emmy nod, as the quality of the show is at least at the level Monk, and above alot of other programming…and as far as complaints about blacks not being represented in nominations or in programming, Dule Hill and James Roday have a dry wit that reminds me of ‘I Spy’ with Bill Cosby and Robert Culp, with a bit more slap stick.
