Jay-Leno-September-14-2009

Full ratings results have now been posted. Click here to see them.

The Jay Leno Show slipped a bit on Thursday night in the preliminary metered market numbers to a 6.4 rating / 11 share, compared to Wednesday’s (9.2/16), Tuesday’s (8.0/14), and Monday’s metered market results (12.1/19).

However, The Jay Leno Show was above the 4.9/8 generated last night by the premiere of Community, so it looks like people tuned into Jay, not the other way around.

These results are preliminary and don’t include the important adult demographic ratings, but do give an idea of the night’s trend.

I will have the fast affiliate results posted for the entire night as soon as they are available.

Here are the NBC fast affiliate results directly from NBC, other data to be posted in the regular post when it arrives:

  • “Community” scored NBC’s highest non-sports 18-49 rating and biggest non-sports overall audience in the time period since April 2, the night of the “ER” finale.  “Community” won the time period in adults, men and women 18-34; adults, men and women 18-49; and adults and women 25-54.

NOTE: All national ratings are “live plus same day” unless otherwise indicated.  Metered-market household ratings are “live only.”

Here is the CW fast affiliate information directly from them.

VAMPIRE DIARIES ranked second in the hour beating FOX’s Bones and NBC’s comedies among women 18-34 (2.6/8), behind only CBS.

VAMPIRE DIARIES also ranked #1 in the hour among women 12-34 (2.8/10), female teens (3.4/13), teens (2.2/7). Looking like VAMPIRE is Thursdays #1 show with female teens again this week.

Considering all of the original competition it faced this week, VAMPIRE held a good chunk of its premiere audience in our target women 18-34, retaining 84% from week to week. And better than 75% retention in all other demos.

VAMPIRE has improved the time period vs. a year ago (2nd episode of Smallville) by 73% in women 18-34 and 38% in women 18-49 (2.2/7). VAMPIRE is flat with Smallville last year in adults 18-34 (1.7/6) and is only off 10% in total viewers (3.8mil).

SUPERNATURAL has GROWN its ratings vs. last year: up +18% in adults 18-34 (1.3/4), 55% in women 18-34 (1.7/5), +17% in women 18-49 (1.4/4).

VAMPIRE and SUPERNATURAL have improved The CW’s Thursday vs. a year ago by 47% in women 18-34 (2.2/7) and 6% in women 18-49 (1.8/5).

  1. Ryan says:

Lately I’ve been falling asleep watching the jay leno show, but at least the tv is left on to give him the ratings =P

  2. Anonymous says:

Wow, I *AM* surprised that Leno INCREASED from his lead-in….that’s kind of impressive. At the very least, it would likely give NBC a tiny bit of comfort that Jay isn’t totally dependent on his lead-in, and people will flip the channel to watch HIM.

  3. Julia says:

Since NBC’s comedy lineup is usually stronger in the demos than viewers, it’ll be interesting to see if demo viewers tuned in or out for Leno.

  4. ryan says:

i dont really care about JLS

  5. Elyk says:

Who cares at this point? Why keep telling us about Leno? Or do you have a man crush Robert?

  6. HeroesforGhosts says:

Wow, that’s better numbers than I thought Community would get. Good for them.

  7. Chuck Tranberg says:

Actually it’s still pretty much a win for Leno, and maybe the most telling night of the week. Monday was big because of its much anticipated debut. Tuesday was still big with “Biggest Loser” as lead in. Wednesday was big with a lead in from “America’s Got Talent.” But now on Thursday we had the regular NBC prime time schedule. Season premieres of “The Office” and the premiere of “Community.” Leno was up 31% over the combination of “Office” and “Community.” Meanwhile NBC was up 35% for that date compared to a year ago. So far as NBC is concerned, I think they still have to be happy with Leno. Of course with the scripted series returning next week, it will be tougher, but if Leno continues with respectable numbers it will be big for the future of television.

  8. Anonymous says:

Whether you folks like it or not, TJLS *is* important and worth talking about – it’s a new TV experiment which could possibly affect primetime viewing as we know it.

You folks seem to be bitter that the show hasn’t flopped right out of the gate….sorry!

  9. Hudson says:

A 4.9/8 is good for a show like Community right? I hope so, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

  10. Lester's Fan says:

Why talk about Leno? He’s on 5 nights a week, so there’s rating news about his show 5 times a week! :)

  11. Chuck Tranberg says:

Anonymous–they would rather have non-stop talk about “Chuck” which is what I recall from last season.

  12. Chuck Tranberg says:

Hudson–I agree that is good for “Community”. Why? because it kept the audience that “The Office” had; where “30 Rock” often lost parts of that audience. But the real test will be how it does next week.

  13. Paul says:

Tar, in the early metered market ratings Vampire diaries slid 28% to a 2.1, while supernatural was steady with a 2.0

  14. Shea says:

I heard a lot of bad Word of mouth from Community…I thought the pilot was ok and will continue to give it a shot but it doesn’t look that promising. I hope I am wrong. I have loved nearly all of NBC’s thursday night comedies.

Office & Parks were great last night. Fringe was mindblowing. Fringe is the example of how you start an AMAZING second season.

  15. chuckie says:

CHUCK, CHUCK, CHUCK. It’s all about CHUCK.
    Everything should be about CHUCK.

    Signed,

    Annoying CHUCK Fan

NBC Fast affiliate results now have been edited into this post.

  17. Julia says:

Good for Community. Not so good for Parks. For NBC’s sake I hope that Community is able to hold up when it is moved to 8 so it can boost Parks.

And it looks like I’m a genius again. ;) I said 2.8 for Leno on Thursday and if things go the way they have been, it should be 2.8 in the finals.

  18. ryan says:

anyone know the CW’s ratings? im curious about The Vampire Diaries

  19. cool says:

I love how NBC doesn’t want to use the word repeat….

CBS’s “Mentalist” encore and ABC’s “Private Practice” rebroadcast.

  20. Anonymous says:

OH wow, “Community” did pretty well!

Kinda surprised how poorly SNL did…not TOO surprised about “Parks” though, that show is boringggg.

  21. Chucksmom says:

With the headline “slips” you make it sound like it recieved bad ratings. Those are still great ratings for the 10pm hour.

Sounds like Community did pretty well for being on at a odd time (9:30pm) Yeah for Joel & Jay!

  22. Tom says:

I’m glad to see the “Jay reports” each day because I am really curious. That said I still think this entire week is academic at this point. Next week is when we’ll see the first indicators of how this “experiment” is going to work.

  23. MC says:

8.5mil and a 2.7 for Leno? Not even through the first week and he’s down over 50% from the premiere. Looks like those predicting a “settled” amount of between 5-6mil and a 2 or under demo may not have been far off.

Nice opening demo #s for Community, I thought it was pretty good and will be tuning in again next week.

Parks and Rec is toast. It won’t make it past its 13 episode order this season.

  24. Bill Gorman says:

CW’s Fast Affiliate results have now been edited into the post.

  25. BIG DADDY says:

It’s still week one….. it’s like the new restaurant that opens in town. The first month is curiousity

  26. Bruce says:

I’ve decided I’m not watching ANY shows on NBC this season, which has the most liberal biased news (plus MSNBC) in the country. Not going to contribute to GE’s profits and its Obama butt-kissing. Boycott NBC!!!

  27. William says:

Encouraging sign for Community and suprised how well The Office started. I think Leno will win tonight but I have a hunch the Friday Leno’s will always be low rated. Barring some guest or major music act. Anyone know if John Melendez is involved with the show?

Good numbers but again, wait until everyone jumps in. I wonder what they are thinking at black rock, the mouse’s office, and Ruppert’sj place?

  28. William says:

One more thing. I figured SNL might slip, not the same as in an election. The was a very high bar to jump over this year.

  29. thirdsaint says:

I DVR’d Community and watched it later last night. It was alright, funny at parts, but I’m not sold on it. I may tune in for a couple more weeks to see if it gets any better but I didn’t find the characters too believable. I don’t know what Chevy’s character is doing at all and the HS prom king/weird girl dropout thing was pretty lame. Seems like all the characters are based on stereotypes which can get predictable real fast.

  30. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Just to shift the focus a little bit:

Bones and Fringe premiered yesterday. Are these fast affiliate ratings any different from where they finished last season?

  31. rob says:

I DVRed Community but didnt wanna watch it until I saw the ratings. Wow a 3.7 is really good.

  32. forg says:

    Saw these ratings on Zap2it
    http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2009/09/tv-ratings-survivor-and-the-office-lead-premiere-heavy-thursday.html

Vampire Diaries lost a million viewers (3.8 million) but performance is still solid same for Supernatural (2.8 million).

Fringe premiered to 8 million viewers. In total viewers, The Mentalist beat Leno so I guess once the show starts airing new episodes it will easily beat Leno,

And Survivor debuted with 11.5 viewers, I think that’s their lowest season premiere. If FlashForward becomes a hit it could beat Survivor

  33. Grady says:

I’m confused by the CW report. It says Vampire Diaries had 3.8 million viewers, yet retained 84% of its audience… It had 5 million viewers last week, so 84% of that would be 4.2 million. So much spin on these press releases…

  34. Jonathan B. says:

Why did NBC think that people would still care about Weekend Update in a non-election year? Such a stupid move, especially to preempt 30 Rock for it, which would almost certainly draw better numbers – not GREAT numbers, but better. And it would benefit more from the Emmys if they aired earlier.

Mediocre for The Jay Leno Show, though it does give a better idea of just how it’ll perform with typical NBC programming. Now to see how it does with actual competition….

  35. cool says:

It seems ABC will have a trifecta next week, Survivor is pretty weak (a 3.5 for a Season Premiere?) and I can see Flashforward opening big and Grey’s will be 2 hours.

  36. ryan says:

i hope the vampire diaries stay about 4 milli

  37. GEORGE 11 says:

thursday is the only night that work good for the cw!!!

  38. Nattanop says:

    To Grady
The CW said that “84% of Smallville viewers last year”

  39. chrisjozo says:

It must be the Apocalypse because the CW is mentioning Supernatural in press releases.

  40. ryan says:

yea Grady i dont get it either, and i dont even see supernaturals viewership

  41. ryan says:

can someone break down the exactly million in viewers for VW and Supernatural? sorry if that sounds stupid

  42. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Isn’t that a bad sign for Fringe though? I mean, if it’s up against repeats outside of NBC and CW, and has to face CSI and Grey’s Anatomy, aren’t those numbers only going to drop further?

  43. keanna montanna says:

i really don’t understand those numbers..what do the networks consider? the demo or the total number of viewers? those numbers were really difficult to understand. i’ll take integration and differentation any day.

  44. kevin says:

    NBC is back at #1!

    For 1 week at least!

    They must be delighted….

  45. Bill Gorman says:

keanna, total viewership is meaningless, adult demo groups viewership are what matters. Adults 18-49 is a good indication of the advertising potential for a show.

  46. Bill Gorman says:

ryan, we don’t have any viewership numbers yet.

And to continue to sound like a broken record, average viewership has almost no meaning for the success of a show.

  47. Jon says:

It will be interesting how CSI and The Mentalist perform against the two hour Grey’s Anatomy, I’m thinking Grey’s Anatomy will win with 18-20m and CSI will get 16-17m not sure about The Mentalist but it could go either way.

Vampire Diaries dropped but it will be interestig how it fares against FlashForward, if it can hold steady then a season order is a lock.

  48. forg says:

And Bones did really well 10.1 million viewers and a 3.0 demo is impressive. Fringe performed decent a 2.9 demo and 8 million viewers is okay but maybe when Grey’s Anatomy and CSI premieres they will tumble to 5 to 6 million viewers but if they can keep a good 18-49 demo, they could be safe

  49. genna says:

Leno should bring back the desk or put a table in front of the chairs, like Ellen show. Seems he will never be a good interviewer. Still the funniest shows are The Daily Show & Colbert Report. NBC Should put them on Thursday’s at 8:00.

So you base what you are going to watch by what kind of ratings it gets???
