In the ideal cable news ratings world there would be the run up to a Presidential election *every* year. Sadly for MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, it’s just one in four.
Comparing Q3 2009 with Q3 2008, the show has lost 21% of its cable news target adults 25-54 demo , and 12% of its average viewership. 2012 will be a long time coming.

I’m sure one of the reasons for the drop is the no presidential election. It would be interesting to know how many viewers have just tired of his same topics everynite, his mean spirtited name calling, and his nightly twisting of the facts on stories most don’t care about. Last week he mentioned Sarah Palin more times than he did Afghanistan and did not even cover the Zazi terroist plot. A show based on hate can last only so long.
I think you’re missing something, Fox News has had an upswing in viewership. This isn’t about election years, this is about an underdog leftist party on the attack becoming the status quo. No one wants to hear Keith now that he’s spitting out government propaganda. His audience used to enjoy him because he was part of the offensive. Now he is just a tool for the Democrat party and the progressive agenda. He was a tool before, but now that the Dems are in control it’s even more apparent.
The best thing for his show would be for a Republican to become president again and enter another unpopular war. Which doesn’t seem all that unlikely right now.
He’s actually been up with his numbers since Bush was in office. The election is probably why the numbers are down. He’s not the only commentator with lower because of it either.
@db-I’d say most of the 9/12 protesters, birthers and Beck followers exude a hell of a lot more hate than what you might get from Olbermann. Especially people protesting the president with signs that depict him as a primitive African monkey. Yeah, no hate or racism masked as “patriotism” there. Which thing did he mention about Palin by the way? Was it that she traveled to China to speak about how death panels actually exist and that Americans will have to be gassed if health care reform passes?

Well, I’m in the target demo, watched Countdown this time last year, but don’t even consider it as something to watch this fall. For me, the election is *definitely* why I tuned in every day.

So how many far right loons were in DC on 9/12? How many did we see on tv? a small handful? 10? 100? Dave M, O’Reilly’s 2007 3Q average was 2.802M for P2+. His 2008 3Q average thus far for P2+ is 3.294M, an increase of about 18%. The election bump began very suddenly for both around mid-September, so it really didn’t play too much of a role in Q3’s numbers. The 4th quarter comparison will look bad for both, though worse for Olbermann.

Perhaps more importantly O’Reilly’s 25-54 numbers are up almost 40% from last year Q3 (835,000 now from 603,000 in Q3 2008).

Beck accused Obama as a racist? Well, Obama said to judge him based on the people around him. How many racist radicals does he have around him? How many years did he listen to Rev. Wright? What did he say about his white grandmother in his book? Glenn Beck just pointed out what would seem kind of Obvious, that is, if you listen to Obama himself.
Very few people are attacking Obama because of his race. This chart appears to be intentionally misleading. Please compare 3rd quarter ratings for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
In 2007, Mr. Olbermann averaged 744,000 viewers in the 3rd quarter. So if we compare non-election year ratings, Olbermann is up from 744,000 in 2007 to 1,083,000, a rise of 339,000 in two years or about 30%. I stopped watching Olbermann two years ago, I just couldn’t take his special comments. I wonder has he ever done a hate-filled special comment about Obama? The problem is that that small group of people is all you see and hear about because they are the most vocal. They’re the only part of your party that is actaully organized which is pretty sad. No other republican has the spine to the tell them to shut up or distance themselves from them then that is all people will see. Notice how Obama said that he supported an investigation of ACORN (which is just such an important issue right now) or that he distanced himself from Wrigth and Ayers. They’ve hijacked your party and made them look like a bunch of biggots who are angry that a black man is president. What exactly are they protesting? A bail-out system and a bad economy that Bush first granted with no safe gaurds or “czars?” A title and system that was started during the Nixon administration and used extensivley by Bush. Didn’t see them protesting that then, come to think of it I don’t think anyone even cared about them during his adminstration. And now suddenly, Beck went after someone who is now comfortably under the orwellian eye of the RNC. Bush ws also attacked after he let an entire city get under water, and he was attacked by one person, a celbrity, who we know can’t keep his mouth shut. To this day Obama misleads about healthcare (9/9 he said he would not sign a bill that increases the deficit one dime – today’s commercial says he will not sign a bill that increases the deficit one dime OVER TEN YEARS). Obama denigrated police (”stupidly”). He surrounds himself with racists like Van Jones. He is a racist himself (”my grandmother was a typical white person”). He has disavowed and distanced from ACORN though he was their former lawyer. He belittles all who contest him including george Stephanopoulos. He denies that healthcare will result in mutli-hundred dollar cuts to Meicare though the AP, NY Times and Congressional Budget Office say otherwise. In the only interview I saw Obama even mention ACORN on the Sunday talk shows he said “what I saw on the video was inappropriate” (is that really the strongest word he could come up with for teen prostitution?). I don’t agree with everything that Obama has done. The people, not just celebrities, who attacked and questioned Bush went after him because of what he did over the course of a decade to this country, violating constitutional rights, going to war on false pretences, flat-out corruption. Obama was Acorns attorney almost 15 years ago, the group has no bearing on him now. Fox wouldn’t even have mentioned the group had he not of been an attorney for them so long ago, and like Obama said there are bigger issues facing this country then some corruption in a small group. He also got that policman and the man he arrested to talk to each other, you think that something Bush or McCain would’ve done. He also appologized for his statement even though the police did act stupidly enough to ask a man to step out of his own house after he told the officer repeatedley that it was infact his home and that he was not the intruder. Do you really think the economy would be better off with McCain and Palin using the same economic system that got us into this mess. There will be a deficit with health care no matter what. There will be a deficit no matter what thanks to the Bush adminstration. It took us 8 years to get to the place we are now we’re not going to get out of it overnight or within 9 months. Large chunks of Americans still prefer him to a party that will only benefit health care comapnies.

What the hell is wrong with trying to get the olympics to a city that could have it’s economy boosted by it. There’s also this thing called technology, and it’s done wonders for communication. He can contact the commanding officers in Afghanistan, an issue I find to be more important than the olympics and I’m certain Obama does as well, and then stop by a city to rally people. Isn’t it amazing!

Olbermann’s multi-year trend makes perfect sense to me. I used to watch him occasionally a few years back. I did not agree with him often, but he made good points and was civil. Then, somewhere along the way he just lost it! Am I the only one that thinks he has gotten progressively more and more obnoxious over time? I still try to watch him every now and then. He’ll start down a path where I think finally he’s going to say something I agree with. Then when he almost has me sucked in, WHAMO! He says something totally abrasive and insults me. When you are a political commentator on TV, you are periodically going to say things your audience disagrees with (yes even Beck and O’Reilly occasionally say things their audience disagrees with; I know it’s hard to believe), but when you are as caustic as Keith has become, you just piss people off and they eventually stop watching. The numbers show Kieth can’t continuously insult people who disagree with him expecting them to keep coming back for more … and at some point everyone is going to disagree with him.

The central point in this debate is the fact that all of MSNBC’s so called “news programming” is in the toliet, while their counterparts at Fox are enjoying record audiences. Folks want objective news coverage. Apparently they know where to find it.

The silly facial expressions, the smarmy attitude, the pathetic punditry from the same 10 guests every night…..this crap had to wear thin quickly, and it has.
Throw in the handful of folks who still watch “Hardball” – if you can actually find any – and you can’t match up their combined totals with Greta when she’s off on vacation.

Dave M, you might be onto something. I remember reading an interview (I think it was in Playboy) with KO where they asked him why he gets fired from all his jobs. He stated that he is his own worst enemy and that eventually he mentally implodes. I remember when ESPN had their 25th Anniversary celebration, all their former employees were invited back, except KO. I guess that speaks to his disposition, and why he was terrible at doing sports too. I would rather have him at MSNBC than back at ESPN infecting sports highlights. I must say, in his defense, there seems to be very few talented, liberal pundits. If Ed Shultz can get a show, you know there isn’t much to choose from. Alan Colmes isn’t bad, but he is still under contract with fox. His sarcastic and witty sparing with O’Reilly is ammusing.
I have been watching both BOR and KO for the past year. I will watch one then catch the other on the rerun.
Here is the problem that KO is facing and must address over the coming months.
1- He can’t blame the POTUS. Bush is out of office, and KO will not blast BO for anything. There goes that material.
2- He cant’ blame the VP. Cheney is out , Biden is in. There goes that material.
3- Sarah Palan is no longer a public official. She is no longer running for VP and is no longer Gov of Alaska. Bashing a private citizen gets old fast. There goes that material.
4- Can’t rile up the anti-war left. Iraq is by now seen as a success after the Surge. Over the next 16-18 months the US will be pulling out of IRAQ. The current war in Afghanistan is the focus of this POTUS and things arent’ going well. You cant’ rile up the anti-war left when your man is the POTUS. There goes that material.
What that leaves for KO to spend a 60 min show on? Excactly, not much. KO portrays himself as they guy in the white hate, he sorely needs a guy in the black hat to demonize.
Who does that leave for him to demonize? FOX, Beck and BOR. And when Beck lapping KO 3 times in ratings on a show 3 hours earlier during rush hour. It just makes KO look foolish.
And nobody seems to be willing to tell him that.

Obama will get Illegals healthcare by simply declaring them to be “On a path to citizenship” or declaring an outright amnesty by making them Americans. The enforcement provisions of HR 2300 had been stripped out which would have not required people signing up for the government plan to prove they were citizens. Now they want to tax everything from soda to nuts – anything deemed politically incorrect. They want to jack up utility rates with pointless carbon control nonsense so people will end up freezing in the dark, unable to pay utility bills. Olbermann and Maddow kicked the crap out of them in the only meaningful way–by having the party and candidate they supported win a huge victory.
And I think Olbermann & Maddow are perfectly fine with losing some viewers, in exchange for helping to defend Democracy against those who hold it in contempt.
And anybody who watches FOX News holds Democracy in contempt.

Unfortunately Olbermann still thinks its 2008. He is constantly ranting about Cheney, Bush, Palin, etc. At this rate, he will soon start focusing on Watergate, and eventually end up fixated on the 1921 Teapot Dome scandal. And he would only do that because Warren G. Harding was a Republican.
The simple fact is that people who don’t like Obama and like Fox news really do believe its fair and balanced so I think all liberals and moderates need to stop engaging them and just let them keep on believing hat.
As for ratings moderates and liberals are much more interested in other things right now with Democrats in control of everything so CNN and MSNBC just have low interest. And Fox news is the only place conservatives can go to be told what they believe is true so Fox keeps high ratings, and I am almost 100% sure Fox will be number one for a very long time.

I personally do not watch the show as I do not have cable television. I am too busy working, reading books and watching DVD’s. However, I often watch segments of his show on Youtube and elsewhere. I generally find him moderate, insightful, entertaining, refreshing, truthful and intelligent. I am happy that his show is doing extremely well.

I wasn’t saying Fox news has high ratings because of the election I am saying it does because its where conservatives can go to reinforce there ideas, which was the same when Bush was being trashed by the rest of the media.
As for CNN and MSNBC during the election there was a reason to tune into those channels but now you just don’t have to, you can go anywhere else briefly to get caught up but if your a conservative you don’t have the same option.

Nobody watches MSNBC. Fox News is the only trusted cable news network out there. You can’t trust the liberal media on CNN without them telling you how great Obama is almost everyday. Does anyone remember a couple Sundays ago when Obama went on 6 Sunday talk shows and also appeared on Letterman the next day? Guess what network he didn’t grant an interview – FOX. Pure and simply put, it shows he is scared of the hard-hitting questions and reporters who will question his every move and not just nod and smile at his every request. This is not just me, people. The proof is in the daily cable news numbers. More people watch Fox News than any other network.

Just to make a point folks. Keith Olbermann is BANNED from setting foot on the ESPN campus in Bristol CT.
When Dan Patrick had his radio show on ESPN radio a few years back, he wanted to bring Olbermann on his show as a regular. ESPN gave Patrick his wish but Olby had to do his part from a studio in New York. He was not allowed to set foot on the ESPN campus. So, if he ever decides to return to sports full time. It won’t be with ESPN, or FOX Sports (he got fired there).
CNN/SI doesn’t look good either. Since Parick moved his radio show there, Olby hasn’t been on. Patrick has had everybody else from the Sunday Football Show on. But not Olby.

I have watched a total of maybe 30 minutes of KO in my life and that’s all I could handle. He seems unable to debate anything; everything he says he automatically assumes is 100% correct and anyone who thinks differently is “the worst person in the world”. At least with BO he gets people who oppose his views (even if he rudely interrupts them) and both sides of the story are presented.
I’m not a BO adoring fan though, even if I do watch his show frequently. He basically skipped over much of the Prop 8 fallout that happened in California where prop 8 supporters lost their jobs, houses got vandalized, internet sites were set up with personal information about the donors so people could avoid them… basically the 1950’s communist list all over again. No mention from Fox News about any of this.

What exactly would you like to enforce the illegals part of the health care debate? You want everyone who goes into a hospital to get checked for I.D. The reason they’ve been slow on health care is because the Republicans have made the issue seem controversial when in fact it’s not. A majority of Americans want a public option, they want health care reform. We have almost 50 million people without it. The Republicans are hoping that healthcare doesn’t pass so that way they might actually have a shot at winning next year. As for the “radicals” who he surrounded himself with, that was one person, a Yale graduate and author who can now do more right under Becks radar and accomplished much more in his life than believeing in a form of communism years ago. By the way, where did you hear about all that stuff with czars wanting to make this country more like venezuala or allowing children to have sex with older men? The reason olbermanns ratings are sliding is because his show is like the movie groundhog day. The same stories, the same guest that always agree with him, the same old attacks on the same people either conservatives or fox news the same overuse of 12 syllable words know one has ever heard of the same hate spewing garbage he throws out every night. He calls fox news fox noise but as far as I am concerned that is music to my ears. If his ratings fall any further he will have more segments on his show than he has viewers.

On the eve of the collapse of our entire economic system, GW was playing grab ass with athletes in Beijing for 4 DAYS….and Fox, WSJ and people like Rush didn’t say a word about it.
The thing the leaders of the party don’t get is that rooting against an American city getting the Olympics, and hoping out loud that the stimulus and health care reform fail is in essence rooting AGAINST the people of the United States. Republicans are so lost right now, that all they can do is disrupt and obstruct.
And when the stimulus starts to make real positive changes (as it already is) and more people have affordable health care – the Republicans can look back to 2009 as the year they dug their hole so deep they couldn’t get out of it.

A couple grad students I know used to like Olbermann and Morning Joe, but their cable provider moved it to the deluxe package.
