Fox News Evening Ratings Trend Near ‘08 Election Peak

Posted on 30 September 2009 by Bill Gorman

Unlike other cable news networks, that have seen their ratings fall since the 2008 Presidential election peak, Fox News 5-11pm viewership (P2+) has trended higher since early summer 2009 and is now near the peak levels set around the election in 2008.

2009.09.30 Average Trend

I wish I could take credit for the nice chart, but this one is all thanks to the Excel wizardry of reader MikeS.

The trend lines above are 30 day moving averages.

One line going up two going down! Hmmm, I wonder what it all means?

  2. bot d00d says:

shocked to find msnbc and cnn so close to each other. i would have assumed cnn would have significant separation ahead of msnbc. also interesting that while cnn seems to have returned to its pre-election levels, msnbc has had a ~25% increase. not quite what fox news has done, but significant. maybe this is just more evidence of the increasing political polarization of america.

  3. Dave M says:

    MikeS,
Do you have all of the data for every cable news time slot going back to 01/01/08 in one spreadsheet?

  4. Jeff says:

This is proof that fox news is popular. The far left says it is a propaganda machine for the right yet its prime time line up beats all of the other cable news combined. MSNBC is nothing but a bunch of Obama cheerleaders yet more people watch paint dry than they do MSNBC.

  5. RockiesRule says:

When you think about that its pretty incredible. The network overall averages 1 more million viewers in prime time against beginning 2008. Probably several different reasons, but regardless the results are amazing. Cool chart MikeS.

  6. Philosopher Jay says:

I assume that if you did not add in the 5 PM Glenn Beck rating and instead started at 6 PM, Fox would show the same drop off as MSNBC and CNN. Glenn Beck has been given hundreds of millions of dollars worth of free publicity by the mass media in the past several months (cover of Time Magazine, interview with Katie Couric for example, thousands of articles on him calling the President a racist). Running against a rerun on MSNBC and the Situation Room on CNN, one would expect that his show would bring in big ratings for a few months. It will be interesting to see if it lasts and if MSNBC decides to counterprogram.
I hope you will run this chart in two month. FOX NEWS has had huge drops in audience of around 20% almost every day in September. I have a feeling the chart will not look as rosy a month from now.

  7. TexMex says:

Everyone really needs to stop trying to insert politics into these polls. Viewers by in large watch FOX MSNBC and CNN for news first. Only a small percentage watch them for partisan reasons.

FOX is winning the ratings war because their news stories are relevant and on point with current events.

MSNBC and CNN need to catch up and stop reporting as if it was 2008.

  8. Felix says:

This is what happens when one channel covers the news, while it competitors cover-up the news.

  9. Jonathan B. says:

Fox News has definitely benefited from the increased interest in Glenn Beck in the last few months, which I think in turn has boosted the rest of the line-up. CNN and MSNBC’s personalities just don’t have enough…well, personality to compete with the news that the Fox News personalities manage to create about themselves, and the way that they pander to a specific, minority but still large audience. It’s horribly unprofessional, pandering, unnewsmanlike and disgusting, but hey, what sells sells, and Fox News is selling it in spades.

  10. josh says:

past several months (cover of Time Magazine (he didn’t even interview with TIME), interview with Katie Couric for example) happened within the last 2 weeks. 5pm is important now since he gets 2.8 to 3.5 million
maybe because the news of Fox is presented in a better manner…example happy people verse grumpy people…plus they’ve hotter people delievering the news too…granted not the reason i watch…but the sets are better…better music…better presentation.

  11. CK says:

As with all TV programming, the “better” programming does not necessarily mean the better ratings. All this means is that FOX has found its audience.

  12. Rob says:

I’ll tell you why Overbite has bad ratings; he has people on the show that can’t even speak propoer English to defend his warped, leftist agenda. He’s the biggest piece of garbage I’ve seen on television in a loooooong time!!

  13. Doug (2) says:

That’s not really the reason, Josh. I find FoxNews drab and dreary, myself. Set-wise, MSNBC whips them both.

Fox’s average viewer age is significantly higher than the other networks. It’s audience is, in its essence, angry old people. And right now, they’re really angry.

  14. KenMan says:

I love FNC and I thank them daily for providing a ‘balanced’ reporting of the news. How can MSNBC stay with on-air idiots like Mathews and Olberwoman. They are so one-sided in their reporting. As I have said before ‘Liberalism’ is definitely a mental disorder!! I can tke a little of CNN such as Lou Dobbs but Wolf B. is a complete joke.
Thanks again Fox–we love you. The days of the alphabet networks and CNN dominating our political beliefs are over. Grab some bench!!!

  15. TexMex says:

    To both CK and Doug(2).

This isn’t about who has better programming or who has a better looking set. Its about NEWS.

All 3 networks bill themselves as “Cable News”

Whoever has the more current and relevant news stories will gain a large audience.

The news that both CNN and MSNBC choose to air, are not bringing in any new viewers.

    It is that simple.

    TexMex

  16. josh says:

    im not old so there…lol

  17. shane2813 says:

TEXMEX your right it’s like the Old Leftist media can’t report the latest stories anymore. The game has changed and they don’t know what to do. Like a fish flopping around out of the water. Poor little leftist don’t control the agenda anymore WE DO. What will you do? Nobody want’s to buy your Old Tired Garbage anymore. OH…did you hear Time Warner and GE are selling some of their junk. Time Mag People and NBC Universal. Looks like Rupert could add to his growing media empire. He could show them how to turn a profit. MARXIST=DEMOCRATS=TERRORIST All the same ask The Safe Schools Czar Kevin Pervert Jennings. He likes little boys.

  18. sandra says:

dream on philosopher, typical lib, ” take off glen beck and the ratings would be the same as msnbc and cnn” you are delusional!! since the election FOX NEWS has been beating the hell out of msnbc and cnn both obama networks and most of the time ratings have been higher then the two combined, the shows during the day are way higher also, PEOPLE ARE SICK OF NOTHING BUT GLOWING, ADORING, IDOLIZING COMMENTATORS AT mspms, cnn!!!!!!! they will never learn that if they would also report FACTS how obama is trying to turn this country into a socialist empire , he is nothing like he was on the campaign trail, and as far as FOX NEWS being nothing but right wing nuts, more independents watch FOX NEWS then REPUBLICANS or democrats, face it people they all love obama to much to change and if they keep that up their ratings will stay at the bottom, and dont you remember obama bought nbc, they owe him.

  19. Gary says:

Lets just face the facts: Fox News tells the TRUTH. The left liberals were all helping Obama get elected. Hell Chris Mattews told everyone how he had wood just thinking about Obama. They elected him and now they have helped run the country into the ground. They no longer qualify as journalist.

  20. TimD says:

I think it just represents the far right and right wings need to hear their views more often — and FOX is preaching to the choir. It isn’t surprising it has so many viewers. I know if I felt so out of step with the majority I’d seek comfort in watching FOX.

  21. Gary says:

You might also watch FOX to know the truth. Your like Obama of in your own world.

  22. Jesus Moreno says:

Fox News has become the network of the angry tea party people and the people who don’t believe in evolution I would expect its audience to be huge I mean where else would conservatives go to get their views reinforced while the rest of the world is progressing and freeing themselves from traditional beliefs and customs its nice and cute that they still think they can stop the natural progress of society.

  23. Jrock says:

Controversy sells controversy gets attention and controversy gets ratings. It’s as simple as that and no one should be suprised here. With Beck, O’Reilly and Hannity giving controversial veiwpoints on the president people are watching to see what they will say next. This isn’t about better news coverage, better sets or better music wrap arounds or even hot chics it’s about the controversy. And no one is doing it better than FOX. FOX, Beck and company right now is like PT Barnum they know “There’s a sucker born every minute” and they are keying in on that big time right now. Controversy sells!!

  24. Tom says:

Fox news has high ratings because of all the liberals and conservatives that watch it, not just the conservatives.

I think Fox news gets more liberals watching it then MSNBC or CNN because liberals like to get mad and watching Fox news makes them mad.

Conservatives like to watch Fox news because they already are mad and like to be told that what they are mad about is real.

So both sides get more and more mad by watching Fox, liberals because they disagree with everything Fox says and conservatives because they agree with everything Fox says. Which I think is just great.

  25. Philosopher Jay says:

    Hi Josh,

Good points that the examples of media coverage I gave were examples of recent media coverage and not included in the chart ratings. However, these were just recent memorable examples of coverage, which I used because most people would remember them.
The intense media coverage started at the time his show went on the air. I had never heard of Glen Beck until his Fox show started and I started reading his name in mainstream media every day. It seemed that they would repeat whatever absurd and insane charge he made as if it was a revelation from Christ.
I have never watched the show, but it seems that for the past eight or nine months, half a dozen of the the 100 or so videos on youtube’s political section is by him or about him. Since January, he seems to have gotten as much coverage as President Obama on Youtube. Since President Obama was elected president with more votes than any human being in history 69,456,897 (George Bush is second with 62,040,610) and Glenn Beck was elected to spew his mind by one man Sir Rupert Murdoch, this seems to show the power of the Australian born billionaire to undercut and subvert democracy and dominate and command a significant section of the United States Public.

  26. Cody says:

If the average FOX viewer is significantly older how come thet beat the others in ALL IMPORTANT DEMO’S

  27. JC says:

Felix said: “This is what happens when one channel covers the news, while it competitors cover-up the news.”

Hit the nail on the head!

  28. gbd says:

This is what happens when one network tells people what they want to hear and the other networks report actual news. I’m surprised that anyone is shocked by these ratings.

  29. Charlie says:

KO was back lastnight. I watched the last half or so. Did he mention why he was out for so long?

  30. Boris says:

How many electrons died for this festival of the wrong side of the bell curve?

  31. Bad Robot says:

Keith Moonbat was away undergoing a lobotomy – it didnt help. At least thats what some guy told me.

  32. Tom says:

Keith’s father has a serious illness and he has to keep going to the hospital at different times so he has no idea when he will be on the show or not.

  33. JayGatsby says:

I have to say it really pissed me off when Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe called Glenn Beck and anybody who likes him and agrees with some of what he says (not all of it) bad for the republican party. Every single freaking conservative that I know likes him (not that they agree with everything). My brother even has a signed picture of him and Beck. I’ve liked Joe in the past because he hasn’t been like the others at MSNBC, but this fox jealousy is really starting to piss me off.

  34. Tom says:

Joe is a smart politician and he is just telling you the truth. If you follow Glenn Beck and put out his idea’s as republican ideas you will lose just about every moderate district.

And Glenn Beck is not a conservative he is just a good actor that knows how to make money.

  35. mark-allen says:

KO has just become un-watchable and maddow is no better…they come off as grumpy children in a wet diaper who whine all the time that someone else has invaded their toybox…

yes, bush was bad and made bad decisions…WE GET IT…GET OVER IT.

and maddows defense of ACORN is beyond words…i hope joy behar stomps all over her ratings…and i hate behar.

  36. David says:

Hah! Somebody might want to tell these guys that they’re having no effect at all.

  37. JayGatsby says:

    @Tom

I guess we’ll see in 2010. I think you’ll be surprised. I know so many freaking families that have never cared worth crap about politics that are getting involved. As far as Joe goes, Joe’s ratings aren’t that great and that’s probably for a reason. As far as Joe telling the truth, when he takes video clips of beck cut doctored and out of context and tries to show it as “truth”, it’s total bull and everybody knows it. The reason Beck’s ratings are huge is because he’s connecting with the core conservative base, not that everything he says is 100% accurate, but right now every conservative describes Beck as “on fire”. Hopefully his “refounders” group of congressmen, which is now up to 5, will make a huge dent in the corruption in DC.

  38. Bruce says:

Many liberal/Dem voters are poor blacks and latinos who don’t watch news channels like conservatives. They don’t read books either, which is why conservative books dominate the NY Times best seller lists. To get these poor and uneducated potential Dem voters to the polls last time, ACORN, SEIU and other far left groups mobilized.
Bottomline: Conservatives watch TV news and read books, liberals would rather watch Maury Povich and many can’t even read English, much less a book.

  39. Tom says:

Beck and everyone else on these news shows does that stuff to video clips so not sure why Joe doing it matters all that much.

As far as 2010 I don’t think I will be surprised I expect the republicans to pick up between 20 and 30 seats, more wouldn’t surprise me, in the house and maybe 5 senate seats. The thing that may be surprising is just how many moderate republicans will be in those seats. I think most of the new republicans in congress in 2010 will be moderates who run away from Beck.

Now if you see any republicans that are not from hardcore conservative states or districts quoting Beck in campaign adds and win then I will be surprised.

  41. bob smith says:

    owned.

  42. JayGatsby says:

The deal with Joe is I liked watching his show BECAUSE he tended to land in the middle. But his constant slamming of Beck is way too much like Olberman, who no one respects.

As far as candidates go, no candidates should be quoting any talk show host. That doesn’t make any sense, I’ve never heard even really conservative candidates quote Beck or Limbaugh or Hannity. Why the heck would they?

Also, we have a lot of moderate republicans in office right now, so which ones are running away from Beck right now? Cause I haven’t heard any, that was one of Joe’s complaints. If none of them are running from Beck now, why would they when he becomes even more popular closer to the election?

  43. Tom says:

To be honest slamming Beck is the middle and Joe and Olberman hate each other so when they agree on Beck just maybe they are right on him.

Saying nothing on Beck isn’t exactly running away but it is best because if you attack him you lose the primary if you support him you lose the general.

But what I’d like to know is do you think that there will be more moderates or more conservatives elected in 2010.

  44. chaos amoeba says:

I’m not saying one network or another is better and can’t explain the trend — however, the difference in overall share seems to have a rather simple (non-judgmentally) political argument.

Liberals/conservatives split the US roughly 50/50, with a good amount of swing either way (this is why presidential races are difficult to estimate). We also know, per this thread, that they have different viewing preferences w/regards to cable news. However, there _is_ only one major news outlet that swings relatively conservative whereas there are multiple news outlets that swing relatively liberal.

Thus, if we assume we have 100 people, 50 liberals and 50 conservatives, all 50 conservatives will watch Fox; while, say 25 of the liberals watch MSNBC and 25 watch CNN. This gives Fox the plurality of viewership, but doesn’t make any grand statement about the plurality of media political preference.

  45. Jesus Moreno says:

@LynnW oh sorry didn’t mean to insult your beliefs with a scientific fact but this post is about Fox News and its amazing ratings I think the ratings trend will continue and it wouldn’t surprise me if they get exponentially larger in the the next couple years I mean everything else on the Mainstream Media as much as they try to hide it has a liberal slant Fox News has become sort of a safe haven for traditional views and moral conservatism which by the passage of time usually gets killed off as the younger generations of Americans are unchaining themselves from these outdated beliefs (ex. opposition to gay marriage or preaching that America is a Christian Nation) by 2050 whites will be in the minority in America and for the most parts immigrants African Americans tend to go democratic so its only a matter of time.

  46. Sharon says:

    @Charlie
His father’s been in the hospital.

    @Philosopher Jay
Well put. I didn’t know that 5pm was considered to be prime time.

  47. JayGatsby says:

I totally agree that saying nothing about controversial/popular figures is a good thing. Even if you disagree with them. Michael Steele learned that the hard way and now no conservative trusts him. He lost his credibility immediately.

I don’t know if they will be moderate or conservative in 2010. I personally hope that they will be conservative and that they will fight against all forms of corruption in both parties and in our government agencies.

The problem that conservatives have with republicans is they get elected and then they don’t do what they say their going to do. That’s the reason so many conservatives were pissed off with Bush. It’s also the exact same reason conservatives didn’t support McCain. It’s also the reason Beck said that McCain would have been a worse president for conservative/republicans. Obama through his radical agenda has scared the living daylight out of the conservative base. Many of which thought their votes didn’t matter in the last election. I hope that it will translate into real elected officials in 2010 who actually serve the people.

  48. sethd says:

I think people like to hear the truth and want the tough questions asked. I know I do! That is why I watch FOX.

  49. JayGatsby says:

    @chaos amoeba

It does when Fox gets more viewers than all of the other networks combined. Also, if any of the other networks were simply neutral and balanced like they all claim they would get a freaking ton of viewers. People are just sick of the extreme liberally biased programming. Especially when all of these networks don’t report the news, like Acorn and Van Jones. Also the majority of the US believes the media helped get Obama elected and is pushing his agenda and you simple can not be fair and balanced if you are doing that.

  50. Randy says:

It’s all about content and balance. Even the most partisan hosts on Fox invite guests from the other side of the political spectrum (in most cases, leftists), unlike Olberman and others on the leftist networks who only present one side. Even Beck and Hannity invite leftist guests on their shows to present balance. This is something MSNBC still doesn’t grasp. As for CNN, it is what they DON’T report that has them down in the ratings.

  51. Tom says:

Conservatives should just stop supporting republicans. What I would like to see is a liberal party, a moderate party and a conservative party because republicans and democrats never do what the people who vote for them want.

I also don’t know about this radical agenda because he isn’t getting anything done he just keeps making speeches while doing nothing. Obama is the least effective president since Jimmy Carter.

  52. chaos amoeba says:

    @JayGatsby

Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that Fox didn’t have the plurality either — in fact, if, as you say, it gets more viewers than all other combined, it would have a majority.

My main contention is that the replies in this board seem to read to far into the data. The above doesn’t have direct share data, but if we believe that Fox is gaining market share, than it certainly suggests that there is an increasing popularity with the kind of news Fox is reporting. It is an “okay” inference to suggest this reflects a growing trend towards conservatism overall; however, much of the commentary on the board make it sound like 30% of Americans suddenly decided that conservatives are better than liberals.

Such a conclusion makes far too many assumptions than are warranted. While educated inference and speculation are definitely welcome it becomes questionable when these items are touted as truths. There are several reasons why the trend in ratings could over-reflect or under-reflect the actual growth in conservatism, including the items mentioned above (actual preference for conservatism, interest in controversial figures) as well as other items (a gradual realization of Fox as an alternative would suggest more conservatives than noted; higher sustained viewership in the non-majority party would suggest fewer).

Further viewership for news programs — as is with other television — is only mildly correlated with quality. It is possible that Fox is improving the quality of its new reporting (or the other outlets are getting worse), but there are other reasons why people choose to watch one program rather than the other. As suggested, people would prefer programs that align with their political beliefs, thus the increase could be a shift due to changing beliefs. People also prefer programs that are entertaining, thus the increase could be a shift due to more engaging reporting from Fox — where engagement can be a function of content as well as style.

In any event, I’ll stop there. People will read into the numbers what they will, and it’s liable to only confirm their opinion and have very little sway on others. I was just hoping to be a bit more “moderate” — if you will — with regards to what the numbers meant.

  53. fred says:

I am sure Obama and Pelosi can come up with a way to stifle freedom of speech soon enough, as they continue to openly discuss and shed crocodile tears about. Then they can kill off Fox news channel and force the mindless masses to watch their bailed out MSNBC network and read their soon-to-be bailed out liberal newspaper rags.

  54. Mark says:

Someone said only 12 conservative station and many more liberal so the ratings dont mean much. There was another artical on her that showed the total viewership for fnc and the total for the other stations cnn msnbc healines news and some othere there total viewers combined were still under that of fnc!!!!!!

  55. blackconservative says:

josh i think you are 100% on point fox simply has a better presentation especially since they moved to widescreen the newscasters are hotter the lighting is way better and they have sort of a local charm that you just get from the elitist in the 24 hr cable news cycle like wolf blitzer, rachel maddow

  56. eugene says:

Does anyone else notice that some of these replies are the same word for word? Either same person or a organization out to discredit the truth again. Go fox the only channel somewhat fair and proud of it.

  57. MikeS says:

Sharon & Philosopher Jay, 5pm may not be primetime, but it is when FOX and MSNBC start their “opinion programming” (Blitzer on CNN starts at 4). Arguing to cherrypick data and exclude 5pm from the averages doesn’t make any sense. I think you would both agree that Beck’s show certainly is “opinion”…

  58. gbd says:

“Their newscasters are hotter?” That would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic. Fox is all style, no substance. BTW over at Fox they’re known as News Actors not News Caster.

  59. autumn says:

I myself am a 25 yr old who never thought twice about politics when I heard a speech of Obamas I thought wow who is this guy so I decided to watch some debates and what struck me was he never said anything he just talked around the question saying big words but that was about it and so I watched some news shows and most were saying how brilliant he was but I found fox who wasn’t towting his every move like he was some kind of God and fox seemed to see him as a person not some iconic “black man” they were actually looking at what he stood for while all these other networks couldn’t get over the fact that he was black which is great I myself never doubted that a black person was going to be president someday but these guys acted like it was such an amazement then they call conservatives the racists

  60. Charlie says:

As much as I like Beck, the worst thing that could happen to him, is for everybody to truly listen to him, and elect a government that fits what he says we need lol. What would he do or be like then?

  61. autumn says:

but my point of the above comment was to say I think why fox has more veiwership is because a lot of people like me who never cared much for politics got interested in it during the campain and started watching all the different news orgs and found fox to be the most trustworthy because they weren’t in Obamas pocket and now I am an avid watcher of Glenn, Oreily, and Hannity don’t miss a day

  62. JayGatsby says:

    @Charlie

Then his job would be to keep those people honest and transparent. He would go back to more non-political or political satire. There should always be healthy debate and there should always be transparency in everything that the government does. We don’t have that transparency and that’s one of the reasons we have so much corruption.

  63. JayGatsby says:

    @autumn

Same here. I never watched or paid attention to anything political before this last election.

  64. KD says:

@chaos amoeba and others who are using the “there’s only one right outlet, Fox, and multiple left outlets, …”:

I suggest you look less at the data at a point in time, that is does MSNBC + CNN + HNN = FOX and more at the trends in the data. The trends don’t lie. One is going up, the others are going down.

Now tie this to polling data from rasmussenreports.com that shows a negative trend for the president (much worse than his predecessors) and a “generic” republican slate beating a “generic” democrat slate and I think one can draw a pretty clear conclusion.

  65. Dave says:

Glenn Beck must be on to something… Van Jones(the self avowed Commie) resigned. Beck had been reporting on the corruption in ACORN for weeks before the videos were aired and he lead the way for them to be put on. Since then they have basically been dis-owned by the Left and now are insignificant. He bases his stories on facts, the past statements and writings of these radicals in the White House. He puts alot of others to shame…namely Joe Scarboro…who grows more and more irrelevant since he doesnt do any investigative reporting…but then again he works for MSNBC, maybe he is just following orders. Yesterday Beck did a great story regarding the corruption surrounding Valerie Jarret…again based on fact… and the White House fought back… they pointed out that when he refered to a city losing a Billion dollars running the Olympics he named the wrong city. That was their rebuttal??? laughable! The scary thing about Beck’s reporting is that nothing he reports on is ever proven wrong by the left, they just go into their normal mode of name calling and smears…but nothing he actually says is ever challenged…to me thats scary! It’s one thing to get on the air and challenge day to day events, like Mark Levin does… it’s another thing to actually expose corruption based on fact like Beck does…big difference. Guys like Levin and Scarboro to me seem petty and jealous of Beck’s success. Maybe if what he says was disputed in any way based on facts he wouldn’t be on such a tear, but until that happens his ratings will go through the roof and peoples eyes are being opened to this corrupt administration… am I wrong? prove it to me with facts…Beck does that! Who are people going to believe?

  66. Dave says:

    another point…

Why are you libs so obsessed by FOX? You basically control the print media and cable news networks… Conservatives have Fox and AM radio (for the most part) So what’s the big deal?? you can watch MSNBC and CNN…read just about any newspaper like the NYT and get your fill of liberal propaganda… the rest of us can get our news reported without all the Liberal, thrill up our leg, biased crap the other stations are doing. All 2 – 500K of you can be happy and the 3.5 Mil of us can be happy too. Why are you so obsessed with FOX?? just don’t watch it…in your norrow little mindset you will never understand why FOX is so successful… so why bother trying?

  67. chaos amoeba says:

    @KD

I agree — I even stated in my second post that the trends such a movement towards viewing more conservative news broadcasts, and I think that bringing in additional information regarding the Rasmussen reports helps to solidify the argument that this trend results from a conservative shift.

Where I was disagreeing was the use of this information and only this information to make comments such as: “this proves that X–.” Your inclusion of supplemental data is laudable and appropriate to make such an argument.

Additionally, I would still be interested in a more rigorous understanding as to causality. Several arguments have been posited here: a shifting towards conservatism, increased skepticism towards certain media outlets (I’m not here to argue the relative veracity of either outlets), and general execution of the programs. All of these may be true or partly true or only some of these (or it may be something else).

Since this is a ratings site, my interest is more geared towards what trends we are seeing in conservative/liberal broadcasts and why. This is related to the general conservative/liberal tendencies of the population, but, as noted, there are several other factors that are involved as well. For example, many have cited the quality of the news broadcasts as an issue. Unless you posit that quality news casts are defined as conservative new casts (and that liberal news casts are of poor quality by definition), then it may be interesting to separate this out.

Unfortunately (for analysis), there are fewer conservative national broadcast stations than liberal ones and this makes it harder to tease out the relationship. Fox represents one form of conservative journalism, but certainly there can be (and are) others. Likewise, MSNBC and CNN do have very different personalities, even if they both belong to the liberal camp.

That said, I guess I’m in the smaller category of people who are interested in viewing habits as opposed to political affiliation in this thread (which is not to say that political affiliation isn’t an interesting topic). Certainly, a shift in politics is a substantial argument for this shift in viewership, but there are other pieces, as well as mediating explanations to investigate as well.

Somebody needs to do some surveys on Cable News viewers. Like what political affiliations watch which networks and how much. How many people have changed their favorite networks and why etc. I think that stuff would be interesting.

Unfortunately all we have are numbers that show the liberal Obama luvin cable news going down, and “conservative” cable news ratings going up.

It may still be early in Obama’s administration, but the country has turned on him, and unless he gets things going it is going to be a long 4 years for him and us.

I absolutely enjoy Fox news. I know the liberals call it “faux news” and other such names, but they are just being fed the hate propaganda.
There is no hate on Fox, just rational discussion about things:issues that are not being discussed on the other stations becuase MSNBC/GE/JeffreyImmelt are all in it for the $$ from Obama, so they will NEVER stear away from their chosen talking points per the whitehouse.
CNN: they are confused and conflicted. They do not know what on earth to do, so they bring on ….Joy Bahar?!! she is such a silly silly woman, so negative and brash. Not someone I want to listen to… sort of like Kieth Olbermann, just completely living in another dimension of space for something, same with Ray Maddow. She is a freak and I cannot take her seriously.

MSM and this hideous Administration: News Flash from the people:: We are awake now and on to your games. Thank you for helping Obama, personally lifting this empty suit into the white house, become the laughing stock of the world, and sadly the rest of the world is also laughing at our foolishness, our hero worship for some Chicago thug with his thug buddies besmirching the highest office of the land.
Open your eyes all of you.
These people, and the main stream media, they do not care about you, this is all about power

It is a fact that both the house and senate are actively trying to stifle the freedom of speech for bloggers and the internet. They want to protect all ‘approved’ i.e. liberal, media sources from having to name their sources (as has always been the case) and they want to be able to attack and sue the regular bloggers and internet media sources which are not ‘approved’ by being able to go after their confidential sources and engage them in lawsuits to discourage free speech. Just another page in the facist dictatorship being created by democrats.

You liberals better wake up because this is Nazi Germany you have created at the voting booth, and it ain’t Bush that you have to kick around anymore.

If real controls or crippling fines/taxes are imposed on the conservative talk shows and talk radio, I don’t believe the 9-12 march of 1-2 million people will even be a flicker compared to the march and demands of the 3.5 million viewers and large body of radio listeners around the country. The groundwork has been laid and the grass roots groups are in place. People will seek them out, and these groups will seek out similarly offended neighbors, coworkers and friends in their communities.

… and my last post, as this thread is dying and I post to much. Here’s my opinion…

Ratings are helped by objective (which can be seen as “quality”) reporting as well as reporting that is consistent with the viewer’s political beliefs. However, ratings are **really** helped by subjective reporting that is consistent with the viewer’s political belief. Because it’s easier to be subjective than objective and politically biased than politically neutral, news programs are becoming less objective (worsening in quality), more subjective and more politically biased.

In the end, this isn’t too bad for people who are biased towards one or the other political spectrum — what they lose in objective reporting, they gain in politically consistent subjective reporting. For more moderates, they lose objective reporting and have media outlets that are also progressively more inconsistent with their political beliefs.

I think Fox’s increasing share is associated with more viewers leaning conservative but less as a measure of Fox’s objectivity. It may, however, reflect what I see as the rapid increase in opinion-based, subjective reporting (and worsening quality) in the liberal media outlets which shores up the viewership from the liberal base, but causes the balance of moderates to flow more towards the conservative side. This can also explain why MSNBC is capturing a greater portion of the (shrinking) liberal news media share — because they have committed to opinion-based, politically-biased reporting — away from outlets like CNN, which have been less aggressive or effective in adopting the new business model.

Fox news is number one because of the women they have on it. They are hot, wear short skirts and we always get nice shots of their legs and chests. Just do a quick search of Fox news women and you can see thats the real appeal, sex sells.

  74. Teresa says:

FOX is the only channel delivering the news. Anyone who is shocked that their ratings are skyrocketing is simply in liberal denial. Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly and the FOX team are killing the competition – with one hand tied behind their backs! Truth sells – such a simple concept the “other” networks seem to have forgotten.

  75. Stan says:

    Hey Jon…
I’m a union guy…so are the other 40 union guys on my worksite…real down in the dirt hard working Americans…we all watch FOX and love it. We all make fun of the girly men and manly women on MSNBC. Maybe because alot of the guys, including me, fought for this country we value the freedom and liberty that we fought and shed blood for. We don’t want to become a Socialist nation, and have the Govt. dictating anything to us. We want the companies we are building buildings for to stay in this country…thats good for us. We don’t want the Govt taxing them to death so that they move to ASIA. Is that what you want you little sniveling socialist retard! Maybe you should get a job or grab a rifle…maybe then you would appreciate what makes this country the greatest in the world. Before you talk the talk, make sure you can walk the walk…you pussy!

  76. robyninchelsea says:

JayGatsby said – the FOX jealousy is really starting to piss me off…
    (or something to that effect)

That’s what MSNBC’s problem is. I can’t watch them because they spend more time making fun of FOX than bringing actual news to the viewers. It’s begun to seem more like some sort of creepy immature adult team rivalry!

I do like CNN during the day, but I can’t stomach MSNBC anymore.

FOX does bring up a lot of relevant issues that usually send me to my computer to search out more information just to see if they are giving truthful information. Usually turns out that they are. I also like the fact that they make a point of dissing conservatives as well as liberals – where MSNBC will totally villify a conservative for being an ass but agree with a liberal who acts like an ass. Too hypocritical for me. Apparently they have never read the Journalists’ Oath.

Can’t stand O’Reilly – don’t know why his ratings are so high. Maybe parents use his program to scare their kids – “Look kids! That’s a creepy guy! Stay away from creepy guys!”… LOL!

  77. how do you like obama now…

  78. dan says:

FNC is the only network that criticizes Obama. The rest are just quivering at the mouth for his next move no matter what he does. I deeply regret voting for him & cannot wait for Obama to lose in a landslide in 2012.

  79. Jeff says:

The people who criticize fox news as a right wing propaganda machine dont know anything. All they notice are the conservative commentators. They cherry pick them and ignore the liberal commenators that appear on he network. Sure Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck always criticize Obama but you also Alan Colmes Msrc Lamont Hill and others who take Obamas side. How many people on MSNBC ever criticize Obama for anything except when they run out of chapstick from kissing his behind 24 hours a day.
