via THR:

CBS has renewed “Flashpoint” for a third cycle, ordering 13 episodes of the Canadian-produced drama to air later this season.

“Flashpoint” has already been picked up for a third season by Canadian CTV, which originally developed the cop series and has been airing it concurrently with CBS.

“Flashpoint,” starring Enrico Colantoni, has been the most successful among the slew of recent scripted imports on the U.S. broadcast networks, which have been looking for lower-cost drama programming.

    Hmmm…a Sunday replacement perhaps?

  2. Bluesplinter says:

Woohoo! Been waiting for this for weeks!

  3. tdot says:

new episodes are already airing in Canada
    THEY’RE SO GOOD BTW!!

  4. tdot says:

ps it’s been airing in the friday 10:00pm slot here
but my bet is that CBS will air it in the 10:00 sunday slot

  5. Christopher says:

    happy to see it back

  6. forg says:

How timely is the renewal news, eh. CBS was really fast

  7. Dan says:

With Three Rivers likely to be axed, CBS is in preparation.
With 13 new episodes combined with 9 left over episodes, CBS has a total of 22 episodes to air throughout the season.

    Dear CBS

    November 1
    7:00 60 Minutes
    8:00 The Amazing Race
    9:00 Cold Case
    10:00 Flashpoint

    Your welcome

  8. Though I definitely DO believe in coincidences, I’m pretty sure the timing of this announcement was not purely coincidental to last night’s ratings.

  9. Jon says:

Doesn’t CBS have like a few episodes episodes of Season 2 left in the can, will be interesting if they show them as part of Season 3. Is it an import from CTV or does CBS fund it in any way?

  10. Dan says:

Jon – CBS has 9 leftover second season episodes that were originally gonna air this summer. 9 plus 13 third season eps, equals a full 22 episode season for 09-10.

Robert – I agree, though I would think CBS would sample some new Flashpoint in the sunday slot before ordering new eps. The series is cheap and was reliable last season.

  11. tdot says:

Flashpoint raked in 1 882 000 viewers last week in Canada
more than double what the Listener was pulling in when it was still airing
    it’s definitely a hit here

  12. Holly says:

So, I guess the question now is, will it air at 9 or will CBS move CC and put it at 10?

  13. Dan says:

With a full Flashpoint season likely to air sundays at 10 until May, that only leaves 1 slot available for Miami Trauma or the bridge. My guess is that The Good Wife will finish early, and the get replaced by Miami Trauma (like how Harper’s Island replaced Eleventh Hour) another CBS drama The Bridge could be held until summer.

  14. Don J says:

Fantastic news!! Very underrated procedural drama. 22 new episodes over the course of the year is awesome.

So I’m a little confused. The story says CTV already ordered a 3rd season, so does this mean CBS has decided they want the episodes and are chipping in paying part of the bill?

  15. Dan says:

Holly – Id move Cold Case back to 9 and air Flashpoint at 10. Though Cold Case’s numbers have been down, its done better at 9 than Flashpoint would likely do.

Tdot – The remaining 9 episodes began airing on CTV September 25, so with it doing well in Canada, I believe that CBS would start airing the remaining 9 episodes by November and then continue with Season 3. CBS will have done for Flashpoint to begin production on the new episodes while the leftovers begin airing.

  16. Dan says:

Don J – I think CTV has started airing the remaining 9 Season 2 production episodes, which havent even aired in the US yet and is the first time that the series is not airing concurrently in both countries. I think both CTV and CBS reached a deal of 13 more episodes.

  17. Jon says:

The Good Wife isn’t doing badly at the moment but I agree that they probably give it 16-18 episodes and give Miami Trauma or The Bridge the post NCIS LA slot. I think Miami Trauma will get the midseason slot and The Bridge will push to Summer.

I’ve heard that they reworked the pilot and made changes to the leads, the original trailer which is on Youtube is not great but it has potential.

  18. Jesse says:

Well that news made my wife happy. :) She enjoyed Flashpoint previously (Though she was glad CBS picked up Medium also) I hope it does well wherever they decide to place it.

  19. Dan says:

Jon – Thats exactly what I said. Wife will get 18 eps, then replaced by Miami Trauma, while The Bridge will get the Flashpoint treatment and premiere in the summer.

  20. Dan says:

Id say Flashpoint should air 10 on sundays. The Unit aired there and it did pretty good after Case.

  21. bloodlink says:

    Aww, poor Three Rivers…

  22. Tony says:

Poor Canada. There are far better shows out there than Flashpoint. I do enjoy your Durham County though. I think Flashpoint works better on Friday nights but the remaining eps of season 2 would fit nicely on Sunday nights when Three Rivers is cancelled the week after next.

What i’d like to see is CBS thinking outside of the procedural box and put on a show on Sunday nights (a night they know they can’t win) and try an edgier, serialized show that could draw more of a niche crowd. The procedurals work for CBS. I get it but EVERYTHING is a procedural. I’m sure they would like for their prodcut to be more versitile. If that’s the correct verbage on this?

  23. forg says:

Well, in fairness to CBS credit they did try to break out of the procedural mold, they had JERICHO,HARPER’S ISLAND,SWINGTOWN, VIVA LAUGHLIN etc but sadly they did not perform that well. We can argue that they should have tried again and again but I can’t blame CBS if they stick to what works best for them.

  24. bloodlink says:

Yeah, but let’s be honest CBS was the absolute suck when it came to promoting Jericho, Viva, Moonlight and a lot of it’s other shows. By the time they premiered I hadn’t even heard of most of them… At least they gave 3R a little bit better promotion, but no by much.

  25. Dan says:

Flashpoint is cheap and does well so CBS likes it, so it works out.

  26. tdot says:

Tony, we in Canada have access to all the main American broadcast affiliates (ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, FOX, etc.) and many of your cable networks as well (A&E, HGTV, FOOD, E!, MTV, MTV2, HBO etc.) in addition to our own Canadian broadcast networks (CTV, GLOBAL, CBC, CityTv, A) we have multiple opportunities to watch both American and Canadian shows. For example, Law & Order SVU and Bones episodes both air the night before their respective American premieres, and many American programs are available on CTV and Global’s media players. All I’m saying is that whatever transpires on the American networks has a big effect on our viewing habits in Canada.

  27. Dee says:

Hm. I wish CBS will shift Old Christine and Gary Unmarried to Sundays and give Criminal Minds a BETTER lead in. I would like for them to have Flashpoint on Wednesdays at 8:00.But I doubt that will happen. Freaking CBS :p

  28. vsaint says:

Anyone chance they change Miami Trauma title to something else, i’m not sure they should associate themselves with NBC’s Trauma.
i guess it won’t matter, different nights.

  29. Dan says:

Vsaint – maybe CSI Miami Trauma

Dee – CBS hasnt had comedies on sundays since 2003, and that didnt work out. Wednesdays is something they will stick with but Criminal Minds seems to grow from its comedy lead in.

  30. Riff Rafferty says:

The show got a raw deal getting bumped for “Medium,” so at least this lessens the blow. But, due to “Flashpoint’s” “off season” production schedule, it will probably be same thing as last year. You’ll see 13 new ones from Jan-May, and the remainder of the 3rd production cycle will be rolled over. Hey, it works for the FOX toons.

  31. Don J says:

Well, considering they are 9 weeks ahead with the leftover episodes. I think it’s feasible to have 13 episodes completed by early-late Spring. Whether all 22 episodes air this season is another story as mentioned above ^^

  32. Angiblat says:

Good news for me, I know people are all “grr crime dramas!” but this one is pretty nifty and underrated I’d say. Also good news for CBS, with Three Rivers tanking hard and fast right out of the box.

  33. Dan says:

Riff & Don J – Its possible that Flashpoint can do a repeat of last year, airing in a cancelled series old slot. However while last year, CBS waited 3 months after The Ex List was axed to add Flashpoint, this year since Flashpoint’s 9 episodes have already began airing in Canada, CBS could easily add them sundays. A new series airing in a slot is better than no series or repeats. (Except in last year’s case where NCIS repeats brough almost twice the numbers The Ex List was drawing and helped Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs) If I were CBS, than I would just begin airing new Flashpoint after Rivers is axed, and finish all 22 episodes by May. Then if CBS & CTV decide to give the series a fourth year they can decide what to do. But since CBS has the episodes, it would be better to air them sooner rather than later. CBS has previously done the quick replacement in fall of 2006 (3 lbs. replaced Smith) and fall of 2007 (Amazing Race replaced Viva Laughlin)

  34. TommyK says:

Dan, I think your Sunday night scenario is likely — I thought so yesterday even BEFORE the network ordered 13 more episodes. I do question though whether, as you suggest, they’ll finish GOOD WIFE early. I think that’ll depend on whether it stays strong through the fall. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s part serialized, and if I were the programmers at CBS, I might worry that if you pull the show off the schedule by early spring, it’ll be “out of sight, out of mind” by the fall.

  35. djm says:

I just wanted to say “YAY! finally!”
i think the river has run dry for TR…

  36. Rufus says:

I’ll never forgive CBS for cancelling Smith.

  37. AZTop says:

I would think that Numbers and Flashpoint would be a good pairing. You would just have to figure out where to put them. Would they work on Sundays and move Cold Case to Friday at 10:00 PM?

  38. Tom says:

I’m not sure what conclusion to draw here:

    A) That CBS has no faith in Miami Trauma to hold up on Sunday, and is just abandoning Sundays for 09 (at least) to the dead and the cheap (CC & FP, respectively). (Listen carefully and you can hear pilot script orders going out as we speak!)

    B) That CBS is underwhelmed by Good Wife’s performance after the NCIS block and will replace it with MT sooner or later.

    C) Both.

  39. Holly says:

Or, D) That Flashpoint is the only replacement they can get on the air within two weeks.

They can air Flashpoint now and make decisions about mid-season later.

  40. LJ says:

good news, it’s a solid show… just as long as hugh dillion doesn’t sing again -.-

  41. Dan says:

Tommy K – The only reason I question The Good Wife, is because CBS has limited timeslots for midseason and if Three Rivers gets axed and gets replaced with Flashpoint, then what other timeslots to they have? Tuesdays at 10 is the only slot I can think of (since every other drama is probably going to stay put in their own slots) The Good Wife is doing good, but CBS may want to see how it does over time in retention to NCIS LA. Like how Eleventh Hour ended early with 18 episodes last season, the same could happen to The Good Wife. It could finish early and CBS can test out Miami Trauma and which ever does the best in that slot could return in 2010-2011. While NCIS: LA and Medium are guaranteed to return in 10-11, Good Wife and Miami Trauma due to limited time slots may not be. While I dont see Good Wife being axed, it could get temporarily replaced. CBS’s other series The Bridge, is more likely to be pushed to summer.

AZTop – Numb3rs and Flashpoint was a good pairing last season but Ghost Whisperer and Medium is a better one. Had CBS not picked up Medium, then we would likely have seen Flashpoint air in the Friday 9pm slot beginning with its 9 leftover episodes. Its also possible Miami Trauma would have replaced Three Rivers sundays.

Tom – Its not that CBS has no faith in Miami Trauma. Its that CBS knows Flashpoint can probably hold up well in the troubled sunday slot. With Flashpoint doing well there, the only slot that may be questionable and available is Tuesdays at 10, so CBS could test Miami Trauma there after Good Wife ends.

Holly – Thats a good point, instead of going with repeats on sundays, why not air new Flashpoint? The combo of Cold Case at 9 and Flashpoint at 10 works very well for sundays, and CBS has 9 solid leftover eps to start with before the 13 production Season 3 begin airing. With 22 episodes of Flashpoint for sundays, hopefully CBS can leave the slot filled and then by May they can decide on Flashpoints future.

The simple conclusion is that CBS has too many series that do well, and limited timeslots. Also Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays wont change throughout the year (Except for when Survivor goes on break, CBS may schedule reality Undercover Boss or Arranged Marriage). Thanks to everyone being so convincing, this makes me slightly more on the side of believing that Numb3rs may be axed, however I’m still more toward it being renewed in May.

  42. Fiona says:

And again Flashpoint comes to the rescue!
First when CBS canceled The EX List after just a few episodes..And my guess now is that Flashpoint will replace Three Rivers.

  43. Dan says:

Fiona – Thats the plan, Flashpoint is to cancelled CBS dramas as Rules of Engagement is to cancelled CBS comedies. I just hope Cold Case shifts back to 9 and Flashpoint airs at 10 since Cold Case holds up well at 9 and Flashpoint may not.

  44. Abble says:

the season season premiere was so sad and tragic.

  45. Tory says:

I’m not understanding why so many think The Good Wife will have a shortened season. Isn’t it giving CBS the best ratings in that slot in years? I think the premiere gave them Judging Amy numbers. And they didn’t lose a ton of viewers this week. Why would they cut that short?

And going off of comments I’ve seen on TV forums, similar to myself, The Good Wife has brought in viewers who don’t watch much on CBS.

I think its more likely that the replacements will go elsewhere, even if they premiere in a better timeslot and get moved the following week to help launch it better.

  46. Kimmy says:

YES! I have missed this show, and thought it had been cancelled. . . but I don’t know when they’d air it as the new Friday night on CBS seems to be really good. If they start airing it on Sundays I really hope it’s not at 10 because I watch an ABC show at 10. UGH! I’m so happy it’s renewed though, awesome show!

  47. Sarge says:

Great Show ! ! ! Why is it that they always pull the best To hell with the ratings

  48. Laura says:

Here’s a crazy idea. Make Friday’s all about crime by moving Cold Case to Friday at 8:00 and putting Flashpoint back in the 9:00 spot. Then put Ghost Whisperer and Medium on Sundays at 8:00 and 9:00, repectively. I think Sunday would be perfect for the “spiritual” programs. And Cold Case wouldn’t suffer from being moved to Friday. It might even do better, without the “iffy” stating times that always occur on Sunday. They would certainly give viewers an alternative to ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and “Brothers and Sisters”.
