Poor Kelsey Grammer, ever since he stopped being Frasier Crane he can’t catch a break. His latest show, Hank, premiered as the most likely ABC show to be canceled prior to the end of the 2009-2010 season. Not to worry, we’ll always have Cheers!

Castle looks a little better this week, but that’s primarily because other ABC shows did worse, it’s still in significant danger of being canceled by the end of the season. the forgotten’s second airing ratings fell sharply and now it’s likely in even more danger than Castle of being canceled. And a lot can happen between now and May, but fans of Eastwick and The Middle might not want to make any multi-year viewing plans either. Brothers & Sisters improvement in its second airing has boosted it into the safe zone.

In response to some comments about color blindness and problems with the colors in the list, the shows in red (the greatest danger) are now also bolded. Does that help?

This is a breakdown of ABC scripted shows and their renewal and cancellation prospects. Here are links to the other networks:

Notes:

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 rating divided by its network’s Season to Date average 18-49 rating. If a show’s season to date 18-49 ratings average equalled its network’s 18-49 average, the show would have an Index of 1.00. Without special factors, scripted shows that were more than 10% below their network’s average are typically canceled by the end of the broadcast primetime season.

Factors that could cause a show to be renewed with well below average index:

  • (F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Friday’s have been renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
  • (S) – Syndication: Shows nearing syndication (66-88 episodes), often have economic factors that trump ratings leading to renewal.
  • (T) – Third Party: Shows that have a portion of their cost underwritten by a 3rd party can be renewed with substantially lower ratings.

Factors that could cause a show to be cancelled with an above average index:

  • (p) – Plum timeslot: Shows in plum time slots with average or slightly above average ratings have been cancelled.

What’s the History of the Index and How Did It Do In the Past? Check out the results from the 2007-8 season and the 2008-9 season.

  1. Craig says:

This drives me insane, stop with this cancelation thing when shows have only been on for 1 or 2 episodes, ts stupid.

  2. Dennis says:

Well, Kelsey Grammer is a recurring character on The Simpsons. They seem to be doing well. But yeah, it’s strange. It’s like the Seinfeld-curse, only with Frasier.

  3. Sharon says:

If Castle holds up with the ratings it got last night than I think it’ll be safe for renewal.

  4. Bye bye Craig, run along to E-Online. Tell them we said hello! :-)

Bill, I think for these it’s probably worth specifying somehow the dates they run through (10/4, in this case) so that people reading this tomorrow are aware it doesn’t include the Castle episode from last night.

  5. Holly says:

Craig, They start it at the beginning of the season so we can follow trends, not because they think it will necessarily end this way. If you don’t like it, skip these posts.

  6. Lee says:

Castle should get a bump in the index next week if its numbers hold up from last night. I know a drop is expected but it should come out higher than previous numbers anyway.

Castle’s chance of survival imo still depends on how The Forgotten and Eastwick do.

  7. S. says:

Poor Castle, still looking very canceled. It might be early in the season, but right now Castle’s problem is that even if Eastwick, and The Forgoten, Hank, and The Middle help pushing ABC’s average down. ABC has 3 new shows that are doing much better than Castle. This season there is no reason to save a bubble show because it was the least bad of the new shows.

  8. Bill Gorman says:

Robert, good idea, added date information to the first bolded text.

  9. rob says:

Hank and the Forgotten will definitely be cancelled by November.

Im hoping Eastwick and The Middle get full seasons this year and I think they will. I also think Castle will get the full season if it holds last nights ratings.

I think ABC has faith in The Middle because they are repeating it this Friday after a repeat of Modern Family.

  10. cool says:

Expecting full season pickups for Modern Family and Cougar Town anytime soon.

  11. Tom says:

Again, as underwhelming as Castle’s early ratings were, ABC still has quite a few spring holes to fill: T8, T10, W10, probably W8. (Middle is probably not canceled, but turned into additional Dancing padding once Ted runs out).

I just don’t see ABC having enough waiting in the wings (especially given that Bachelor & Beauty are Winter-programming) to cancel Castle before year’s end.

  12. shelly says:

Maybe Kelsey Grammer should get a role on his daughter Spencer’s show, Greek. At least Greek is a good show. Did anyone hear Hank’s premise and NOT cringe? Word to show creators: in this economy no viewer is going to root for a character who is a rich, greedy CEO, even if the show is about rich greedy CEO being knocked down a few pegs.

S, Castle’s luck may be changing for the better if it holds up as well as it supposedly held up last night. At the least it could get a full season, if not a renewal for season 3.

  13. nkinsey says:

I’m a little surprised that Castle is lower than the forgotten. Does it have anything to do with Castle having a better time slot, yet not doing that much better?

  14. tom says:

think of the criticism thrown out at tv execs for quick trigger fingers and then look at your headline and story… ha. so freaking funny.

and even if he gets wanked off the air… i think cheers, frasier and simpsons plus medium and girlfriends… are enough to prevent sympathy from blogger headlines

  15. Nkinsey: NO, it has to do with this only being the average for TWO episodes and THE FORGOTTEN having a much better (relatively) season premiere than CASTLE.

  16. romo says:

He should just do Frasier again.

  17. GEORGE 11 says:

i hope that eastwick wont cancel!!its my favourite new show after melrose place!!!

  18. Dan says:

My guess is that Hank will be axed by November and the rest of the ABC comedies will get a full season. Hank could be replaced by Holiday specials beginning in November, but its expendable. Modern Family and Cougar Town are definites for a full year, but I think The Middle has a good chance too. Its possible ABC will keep their comedy block all year but just make some changes. They could move Scrubs, and Better Off Ted to 8:00 and 8:30 and keep Modern Family and Cougar Town where they are. The Middle could be held until later in the season though. As for the dramas, my strong belief is that Castle will get a full season and Eastwick and The Forgotten will be axed by December. I dont think either would be “pulled”, its possible ABC will just air both series out until December.

    Does anyone else agree?

  19. Tom says:

Dan: I suggest you figure out where you are putting Lost in your theoretical before you schedule the comedies :)

  20. mjblaser says:

I love the c/r charts, esp the different colors lol

  21. nkinsey says:

Tom- I agree. ABC looks overstuffed for midseason, doesn’t it? Why do they keep doing that every year, yet it doesn’t ever fully work out for them.

Lost will probably go back to Wednesday at 9P.

  22. Dan says:

Tom – 10pm Wednesdays. I know it would do better at 9, but ABC had a 2 hour wednesday comedy block in January 2007 where Lost aired at 10. If Lost does air at 9 then Id expect Ted and Scrubs to stay at their currently scheduled 9-10 tuesday slots and wednesday to look like this

    8:00 Modern Family
    8:30 Cougar Town
    9:00 Lost
    10:00 NEW DRAMA

  23. Mike G. says:

@Craig. No one said you had to read the posting, just skip this one.

The R/C index is cool…keep it up. At least, I’m no longer mystified when a show abruptly disappears from the schedule.

  24. Vader says:

It’s because he had what, a 20 year run with that character? It’s no wonder it’s hard to see him as something else, nevermind that Frasier was brilliant.

  25. Joe Jackson says:

Hank is a show that could gain steam, after like 2 seasons. How bad was Cheers ratings its 1st season. But now shows are not given that kind of time. A few get a 2nd life, look at The Big Bang Theory, it was almost cancelled after its 1st season now it is one of the top comedies on TV

  26. S. says:

Shelly last night’s 3 has the DWTS overrun, and the MNF football numbers yet to be subtracted. It’s is not going to have 3 in the finals, and right now ABC anything bellow 3, on ABC, means that the show is performing bellow ABC’s average. Still looking canceled after this week.

  27. Dan says:

nkinsey – ABC is the most overstuffed network for midseason with CBS and CW being the least and FOX and NBC being tied with their planned replacement schedules. Maybe its because out of all the networks ABC’s midseason changes drastically from their fall. Lost if likely to move to 9 is ABC wants to break up their comedy block. In that case, its likely a new drama (maybe V) will air at 10. ABC has Copper (13 episodes), The Deep End (6 episodes), Happy Town (13 episodes), V (9 episodes), and True Beauty as candidates to air in the 10pm slots. My guess is that V will stay in its tuesday 8pm slot that its starting with in November, and Copper and The Deep End could air Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 if Lost stays at 9 and Modern/Cougar moves to 8-9 wednesdays. The Middle (if it gets a full year) could air its remaining eps at a 9:30 post Dancing slot in the spring. If Castle gets a full year either True Beauty or Deep End could replace it by the end of March. Either way ABC should have cut some of its midseason dramas to 6-8 episodes. 13 is too much and this way ABC could sample a series and if it does well it can return in the fall and if it doesnt it could get axed. ABC was smart in cutting back its midseason trio last season.

  28. Dan says:

I still think Back to You was good for Grammer but Hank looks really bad. There will never be another Frasier or Cheers for Grammer though.

  29. Tom says:

@Dan: I’d personally bet on something closer to this:

    M: Dancing/Dancing(+Middle at halfway point)/Castle
T: DancingResults/Modern+Cougar/NEW DRAMA (Unless AI airs at 9pm, then swap Dancing and Comedies)
    W: Scrubs+New Comedy(then Lost repeats at halfway point)/Lost/NEW DRAMA(probably Happy Town)

The comedies could be swapped around, but I highly think Middle will serve as this year’s Suburbia, and Lost will air at 9p, which necessitates the rest of the schedule.

  30. X-Factor says:

Grammer should go back to what he does best. Frasier-10 years later. Married in Chicago with a four year old daughter that likes hot dogs, ball games and being a tom-boy. It really doesn’t matter what job he has or whether or not Niles and Daphne ever show up, although their cameos would pull in huge ratings, but that there is that dichotomy between him and his daughter.

  31. Tom says:

@Dan: V only has 4 episodes filmed, and will not film more until at least some of the November ratings are in; in any case, episodes 5+ will not air until March. Something has to air at T8 from Jan until then (on the low chance it comes back at all).

Actually, ABC tried to only get 6 episode initial orders of V and at least one other show, but the producers wouldn’t bite (who can blame them, given the losses they will take if no additional episodes are ordered). 6-8 episode orders make perfect sense for networks – but terrible sense for producers (especially for Fall), which is why they will continue to be limited to post-Jan launches.

Copper is a Canadian production (with Canadian budgets). That makes it overwhelmingly likely it will get a Friday/summer/March start, not a January M-R one. I also don’t see Deep End getting a January start with the low episode count.

  32. idizzle says:

At this point ABC really doesn’t need to concernt itself with how to schedule Lost. They can put it anywhere and do a 3+ demo. It’s not like they need to preserve it for next season, so why not use it to help out with the 10pm dilemma. Not like Lost ever helped anything as a lead in anyway.

  33. Joe Bua says:

Yes, I disliked the Hank pilot also.

It would be a shame to see Castle go away, it’s smartly written, Stana Katic is a TV star and there’s no getting around how engaging Nathan Fillion is on screen.

He’s so charming I wanna gay marry my TV.

  34. nkinsey says:

Dan- I’m right there with you! Granted, they do tend to switch things around quite a bit, but to me it seems like they order SO MUCH stuff for midseason, that even in the upfronts, you wonder “where are they going to fit everything?”

Maybe it the chicken/egg debate, but I don’t think it helps that they present SO MUCH midseason programs, that they HAVE to shuffle drastically. I think who ends up suffering the most are the new shows to ABC. They get so little time to connect with the audience before it’s scrapped for the new show; why would an audience want to get into a show when the network tends to make them short-lived?

  35. Joe Bua says:

And I just can’t stand watching marginal celebrities do ballroom dancing on TV, but apparently I’m in the minority here.

Even the family on The Middle watches DWTS. Well, it’s a nice promo for another ABC show, that’s why.

They aren’t stars, though they might have once been.

  36. shelly says:

I know about the overrun, S. Still, the consensus here is that it probably didn’t affect Castle’s demo numbers by more than 2/10 or 3/10 of a point, meaning that Castle’s demos could’ve still been okay (2.5-2.6) after the overrun factored in.

Of course no one knows for sure till the final numbers come in.

  37. X-R.G. says:

well…if Kelsey Grammer gets depressed about another cancellation….then maybe he can call Dr Fraiser Crane…I hear he’s good at helping people.

  38. Bad Robot says:

Just get it overwith and bring back Frasier.

  39. FJHS3 says:

I am actually enjoying HANK, but perhaps I’m enjoying it in light of a remake of Green Acres…they even have the Contractor-brother-in-law who replaces Mr. Haney…. Hope it lasts a bit longer. (They do seem to over stress his absolute lack of knowledge about his kids, but I guess the learning/discovery will be part of the charm of the show.)

    FJHS3

  40. Kevin says:

It’s not Kelsey Grammer’s fault. The guy’s trying to bring back the sitcom, in an era where the genre is dead, unless Chuck Lorre is at the helm of your show. 12 years ago The Office would have gotten cancelled with the numbers its been putting up the past few seasons, yet now the show is considered a hit.

  41. Lee says:

Unless The Forgotten and Eastwick do a 180 and have a huge jump this week, I think Castle will move ahead of both in the next index rating. Will that be enough to save it for the season? I don’t know but it certainly helps its chances I would think.

From everything I’ve read Castle will see an increase from previous weeks even after the DWTS and football numbers are shaved off from last night. Final numbers can’t come soon enough.

  42. Dan says:

nkninsey – I agree they order so much, yet somehow ABC finds time to air every program and even the unaired episodes from their cancelled series. I bet most of the cancelled shows will resurface next summer for burnoffs. Their midseason schedule seems the most interesting to me.

Lee – Thats not going to happen. Maybe a slight increase, but in general, the numbers for Eastwick and The Forgotten will only go down.

Kevin – Its never the actors fault, its usually the show itself doesnt catch on or isnt good. Hank doesnt look like it fits in with the other ABC comedies and seems like the weak point. Its reviews arent that great either, which makes it a good candidate for cancellation.

  43. Chad says:

I could have missed why in a post somewhere, but did you guys decide to stop posting the networks average per their page or just forget?

I kind of liked seeing week to week progress per average network rating and being able to see if renewal cancel changes were more from increased/decrease viewers or increase/decrease in the overall network average.

  44. Bill Gorman says:

Chad, we stopped posting both the network average and the show average in these posts because otherwise we would have to remove them after 2 weeks per our agreement with Nielsen on using their numbers. The Index is a derivative that we can keep online all season. You can still see the network season to date averages themselves (two weeks of them at least), here.

  45. Tommy says:

Dan, I’m thinking that ABC doesn’t want to mess with the Comedy block. They have struggled with comedy for a long time and now that they have one that looks like it’s going to work well they should leave it alone and let it grow. Hank is really the only week spot in the lineup but ABC has Scrubs and Better off Ted that can fill in the spot. Lost will probably get the 9PM slot on Tuesdays following V. ABC knows that Lost fans are die hards at this point and with this being the final season the fans will show up.

  46. CSM says:

Ouch for Hank, likely to slide more this week since last week was the pilot. Eastwick is heading for cancellation unless ratings hold this week. The Middle is probably safer simply because it’s a comedy and an ABC comedy at that.

I don’t think ABC will move Modern Family and CT from Wed @ 9 as others seem to think might happen. As long as they continue to hold up well and remain competitive in that hour, why mess with that? Even moving them to 8 isn’t good since that hour has fewer overall viewers. I think LOST will either air Wednesday @ 10 or possibly back in its Season 1 slot of Wed @ 8. I know nothing leading out of LOST ever did well but ABC has never had anything on after LOST that already had an established audience so it could happen. Of course this would involve ABC not having comedies at 8 so I don’t know how willing they are to give that up.

  47. DAVID says:

I think Kelsey was miscast in this role. He is to old to be play a father with teenage kids. Sorry to say this but.. Kelsey need to find a better another show or retire for a few years and guest star on other shows.

  48. Riff Rafferty says:

Tom writes, “Actually, ABC tried to only get 6 episode initial orders of V and at least one other show, but the producers wouldn’t bite (who can blame them, given the losses they will take if no additional episodes are ordered). 6-8 episode orders make perfect sense for networks”

It’s the studios that balk on under-13 episode orders. The license fees they get from 12 episodes on top of the pilot help to better amortize the costs of keeping production running than the license fees from 5 episodes on top of the pilot do. Mind you, when renowned cheapskate Jeff Sagansky was running CBS back in the early ’90s, he got to a point where he stopped giving anything — even the new fall shows — 12 episode pickups. The studios were PISSED OFF, but he pretty much told them to take it or leave it. Anyone who wanted a show on CBS took it. This was back when CBS had the World Series, and as I recall, I think he tried to use that as an excuse. That 6 or 8 episodes would take them up to baseball interruptions, and then he’d reevaluate whether or not to order more while the show was off for a month. This was all well and good in theory, except that Sagansky didn’t actually have 6-8 weeks of patience… so most of the shows got yanked after, like, 3-5 episodes. (Coincidentally, that practice ended overnight when he mercifully quit in 1994. “Chicago Hope” even got a 22-episode order right off the bat.)

Of course, as ABC has proven time and time again, Steve McPherson will pick up 13 episodes and then it gets cut down to 10 or 8 or 7 (or in “Single with Parents’” case, 1) shortly thereafter.

  49. Tom says:

Err, yes, when I said producers I meant the production company (i.e. studio) involved.

I need to be more careful with my Hollywood lingo!

  50. 5506 says:

Dam. I want a sad face but i cant. Can someone help me?

  51. Bill Gorman says:

    5506, type : then ( and you get :(

    Here are the rest.

  52. Christopher says:

Brother and Sisters Green so good to see it there

  53. The1337 says:

Castle will probably end higher than The Middle, Hank, Eastwick, and The Forgotten with a steady 2.1-2.3, but it’s still not looking good.

  54. The1337 past experience leads me to believe its best only to compare Castle to only Eastwick and The Forgotten, here. And the very real possibility is they could all be gone.

Though I believe Hank is doomed regardless, the actions around 30 minute sitcoms are harder to predict. If The Middle had even a slightly lower score than Castle, I wouldn’t necessarily find it to be in worse shape.

  55. Doug (2) says:

Doubt bet on ABC messing with Wednesday this season, even for Lost. ABC really wants this comedy line-up to work, and it does, from 9-10pm. Moving it would be a sign that it’s not working, or that the network has a different long-term strategy on the night. It doesn’t – it wants comedies there. Slotting Lost at 9pm and moving the comedies would be painfully short-sighted. As for Scrubs and BOT, they really don’t fit with the flow of the night. ABC will probably launch them on Monday, or Thursday when Flashforward takes a break for repeats. I don’t really see a spot for either of those shows, to be honest.

Given that Lost is in its last season, and I say this as a huge fan who will be gutted after the last episode airs, as a series, it really doesn’t matter to ABC anymore. Lost can go anywhere and probably bring its audience with it, so it goes to Tuesday at 9pm, sandwiched by DWTS and V. Why V? the Elizabeth Mitchell connection, of course. That will get the attention of some Lost fans, at the very least.

  56. Tommy says:

I completely agree Doug. ABC can put Lost anywhere they want to. The only reason I see Scrubs and Better off Ted airing on Wednesdays is because like you said, ABC doesn’t really have a spot for it. I know that ABC said they will air them on Tuesdays at 9 in the midseason but I just don’t see them working there. I will say Scrubs could fit the Comedy lineup if The Middle moves to 8PM and Scrubs goes to 8:30. Better Off Ted is the oddball on ABC, so where it goes is really a toss up.

  57. Cullen says:

So Robert if Castle remains in the 2.0-2.3 range, The Forgotten drops down to the 1.3-1.5 range, and Eastwick goes down to the 1.7-1.9 range does that save Castle or does it need to build its way up to a 2.5?

  58. I don’t really look at it that way since those aren’t the only shows on the network. But I understand why you’d think that based on my earlier comment. Sorry for the confusion.

My general guideline for scripted one hour dramas is that if a show is below a .94 or so that gets it into “on the bubble” range. Shows less than .85 are in serious danger, and shows lower than a .75 not on a Friday are doomed.

  59. Boris says:

    Doug (2) says:

“Lost can go anywhere and probably bring its audience with it, so it goes to Tuesday at 9pm, sandwiched by DWTS and V. Why V? the Elizabeth Mitchell connection, of course. That will get the attention of some Lost fans, at the very least.”

In which case, why not put “V” before Lost?

  60. forg says:

I hope ABC won’t move Modern Family-Cougar Town especially if they continue to deliver consistent solid ratings. They could air lost at 8pm like in the first seaason or move it on Tuesday where its really a weak night for them (even with DWTS around).

I feel bad for Kelsey, Back to You was a better post-Frasier show for him. Hank is just okay to say the least. I’m rooting for The Middle, I hope it could find a way to survive.

Although, it hasn’t aired yet, I’m hoping Ugly Betty would pull respectable ratings when it premieres on its new Friday slot

  61. AO says:

I loathe Cougar Town, but as I have said before, it and Modern Family are working well at 9-10 on Wednesday and represent the future for ABC. Moving them makes no sense to me.

As for Castle, I sincerely hate that it’s in trouble, but it is and it’s first week’s DVD sales of 53,294 did nothing to make me feel better about it’s chances.

At this rate, of the shows that I watch, Lost has the best chance of making it back next Season.

  62. ABCFanatic2009 says:

I really think Castle/Eastwick/Hank/The Middle/the forgotten will be all canceledI knew at least half of the wednesday line-up will not get high ratings, particularly Eastwick (they have the actress from Lipstick Jungle) and HankI knew the forgotten will get low ratings, it has Christian Slater of My Own Worst EnemyAnd I knew Castle will have the same fate like Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money

  63. S. says:

Righ now on ABC medianet, they have, Lost, Happy Town, The Deep End, Scrubs and Wife Swap announced for Mid-Season. That is 4.5 hours. They can cut Castle, Forgoten, Eastwick, and Hank without blinking. If “V” tanks, and it is likely, they still have 1 hour to fill the gap.

  64. Cobber123 says:

In response to the question on color blindness yes it does. Colors now appear brown(ish!) , orange , grey/grey now but much more obvious. Much appreciated. Not too surprised about Forgotten as the format depends on the other characters, none of whom are particularly memorable.
Eastwick inevitably will suffer by comparison with both the book and the film. I think it also suffered from an excess of possible characters and some average to indifferent acting and a so-so script. I am afraid I got no further than the pilot myself and could only wonder why?

  65. Tom says:

    S.-
Deep End only has 6 episodes and is therefore unlikely to get Feb scheduling.
V will only air during November, possibly coming back in March if ratings are any good.
Copper is a Canadian production and not likely to get Feb scheduling.
The reality shows you didn’t list (Bachelor, True Beauty) are likely to air during Winter (Dec/Jan).
Scrubs and Ted may or may not be available – something needs to be left to pad the Dancing hours once the number of contestants shrinks.

So by my math, they only have three midseason hours – Lost/Happy/Wife (and Wife is only a last resort for prime slots), and all signs point to them needing 3.5 hours in Feb already (Forgotten/Eastwick/V/Hank). Castle may get a reprieve (or at least time share the slot with Deep End) for lack of anything else to air during Feb.

  66. Dan says:

Tom – Wife Swap can air whenever, so maybe Tuesdays at 9. I dont think ABC wants to mess up their comedy block but they may want to replace a couple of shows. They could move Scrubs and Ted to 8 but then where will Lost air? If they need to break their comedy block for Lost to air at 9 then I could see Modern/Cougar moving to 8. Deep End has 6 episodes so should Castle finish by March, it could be a replacement. Bachelor will air 8-10 mondays, If True Beauty airs, Id say maybe Tuesdays at 10 until ABC schedules a new drama by March Copper or Happy Town. The other could likely get the 10pm slot wednesday. Either way you look at it, Eastwick, The Forgotten, and Hank will be gone while should ABC renew The Middle it could get placed on the schedule around March.

  67. Sam says:

The apparent requirement these days for a new TV show is to achieve instant rating success or DIE. It’s sad that programs that get off to lousy ratings start don’t get a chance to fix their flaws, find a rhythm, get better at what they do, and find an audience. Look at some of the most successful shows in TV history — i.e., “M*A*S*H” and “Cheers,” to name a couple — and you’ll see that they did NOT enjoy immediate success. And does anyone remember how truly bad the first episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” were? The result of the current climate is that viewers won’t bother to watch a show that they believe is destined to fail. It’s a lose-lose proposition. I must be one of the only people in America who has enjoyed “the forgotten,” and I thought the first episodes of “Hank” and “The Middle” showed potential. Who knows if they’ll get a chance to reach that potential… but given their chances, I for one won’t make these shows a viewing “destination.”

  68. Craig says:

OK 1st of all whoever said i should run along to E well thanks but im 30, its not really for me.

The renew/cancel index is fine, its just the way the articles talk about these shows like their already dead “Melrose Place joins TBL in the TV Graveyard” etc, at least add a question mark on the end. I think its fun to see how the shows progress but i think its idiotic to put headlines like that which declare that a show is over.

Thats all, no offence meant to anyone who posts on here.

  69. Shenna says:

I hope the Middle is given a chance its very funny.

  70. Bryan says:

i would say, the middle, eastwick and castle will renew for a new season and maybe the forgotten. I am definitly sure that hank will be cancelled sooner or later.

  71. Riff Rafferty says:

Tom writes, “Scrubs and Ted may or may not be available – something needs to be left to pad the Dancing hours once the number of contestants shrinks.”

“Ted’s” shot half their 13-ep order. And I hear the new episodes are fantastic. Don’t follow “Scrubs” production (or watch it, for that matter), except they started casting the 5th show of the season last week. So, they’re available… whenever ABC feels like using them. I believe “Ted” and 20th were told to plan for a December premiere — although subject to change, obviously.

  72. Riff Rafferty says:

Hit return too soon. Meant to say that “Scrubs” has an order for 18 (or is it 19?) half hours, so I don’t believe they will exclusively just use it as a bridge between “Dancing with the Stars” cycles. They kinda can’t.

  73. Tom says:

I didn’t mean that the shows won’t air, I meant that the shows won’t be slottable in the February schedule because they may be held in reserve for when Dancing shrinks in size.

Will Scrubs even be schedulable for late Jan/February if they are only casting now (to say nothing of shooting?)

  74. Jennifer says:

I’m rooting for Hank. I think it’s bold to make a multi-cam show right now. And though I really liked Cougar Town tonight, I thought The Middle and Modern Family were boring – especially Modern Family – there is no time to get to know any of these characters. But, instead of rooting or guessing when a comedy will get cancelled, I’ll wait and see – shows get better with time.

  75. Mike says:

Kelsey is a funny talented actor. But these types of shows don’t seem to play well anymore unless their on CBS Monday nights. This is exactly where his LAST show should have been.

It would have been a hit.

  76. Eric (Ohio) says:

The reason you’re predicting Castle to be cancelled is because you wouldn’t think that a cop and a writer would make a good team.

    But you’d be wrong!!!!

  77. Justin says:

Bill Gorman and Robert Seidman, Im confused by u 2 Castle gets a 3.0 rating but you guys say is did a tiny bit better and said it got a 2.2 why? I got proof it got a 3.0 in ratings

  78. Julia says:

Justin, Wikipedia is not a reliable source for anything. Castle’s preliminary rating was 3.0, but that was artificially inflated due to football airing in two markets. The football viewers were removed in the final numbers, and it ended up with a 2.2, which tied its final numbers last week.

  79. lol @ Wikipedia proof! (though we LOVE Wikipedia!). The 3.0 was a preliminary number that was heavily adjusted down to a 2.2 in the final numbers due to

a.) 2 minutes of Dancing With the Stars overrun that was included in the preliminary numbers but stripped out in the finals and

b.) Monday Night Football was shown on the local ABC affiliates in Green Bay, Milwaukee and Minneapolis (where about 50% of the people watching TV in those markets were watching the game. Those numbers were included in the preliminary numbers but stripped out in the finals.

    Hope that helps.

  80. Julia says:

I’d really like to know where Wiki got the 2.6 for the second episode from. The fast nationals had it at 2.3.

  81. Heradite says:

Looks like Hank won’t be back as it didn’t get a back nine order but the Middle still has a chance!

  82. April says:

Noooo!! Why are people not watching Castle? That is one of my favorite shows! They simply can’t cancel it :( .

  83. Riff Rafferty says:

Tom writes, “Will Scrubs even be schedulable for late Jan/February if they are only casting now (to say nothing of shooting?)”

They are doing at least 18, and maybe 19, half hours this season and you’re asking if it will be schedulable for February?

  84. James says:

I wish they chose to premiere “Modern Family” with “The Middle”, as MF is amazing and TM is quite promising.

“Cougar Town” had potential, but the manic tone and over-the-top acting is soooooo grating. I want to stab them all in the face, except the son (whatever his name is, he’s saving the show for me…oh, and the hot neighbor man-cougar, despite his character being a tool). They need to get their shit together or just piss off altogether.

“Hank” sucks and I only gave it a shot the first week because that Melinda McGraw was on Mad Men, and she’s awesome. Everyone else should DIAF.

I can see them cancelling all but “Hank”. This may be the last season of “Scrubs”, which means MF + TM + CT + “Better Off Ted” = a solid comedy block.

Can’t wait to see what happens. Also, I hope “The Forgotten” is cancelled soon so my mother can stop clogging up the DVR with it and never watching it….

  85. Les says:

I’m really glad that Flashforward is in the likely to be renewed catagory. It’s the only new show I’ve been watching and I’m totally hooked. I read that it’s going to be getting a full season, but only in one place. I haven’t found any confirmation elsewhere. Does anyone know if this is true?
