TV Ratings: Dollhouse rises; Ghost Whisperer leads CBS to win

Total Viewers (million) 8.01 6.54 4.01 2.30 1.73

Dollhouse rose to a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating and 2.25 million viewers.  That’s up from last week’s .8 (which rose to .9 in the final numbers) by 25%.  Now we wait to see what happens on 10/23 since next Friday, 10/16 is the first round of the ALCS (baseball conference championships) on FOX.  Ok, perhaps rising from a series low that was very low isn’t anything to brag about.  But,  it’s at least better than setting another series low!

CBS’s Ghost Whisperer easily one the 8pm hour with a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating vs. Law & Order’s 1.5.   Ghost Whisperer was the only show on Friday night (at least on broadcast networks) to crack a 2.0.

At 9pm  Medium’s 1.9 led Dateline’s 1.5.   For those playing along in the “Guess Medium Ratings and win a DVD” contest, you’ll need to wait for the final numbers which we won’t see until Monday or Tuesday.

CBS’ Numb3rs took the 10pm hour, but things were fairly bunched up for the hour.

CW came in third with adults 18-49 at 8pm with Smallville edging out a FlashForward encore and FOX’s comedies.

Here’s Dollhouse’s half hourly breakdown (A18-49) (A18-34)(P2+)

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

For more information see Numbers 101 and Numbers 102.

Versus premiere night last year, Smallville outperformed our comedies by +25% in adults 18-49 and +25% in total viewers.

  1. Nick says:

That’s good. It’s still most likely going to get canceled, but it gives a glimmer of false hope.

  2. Maz says:

Or a false glimmer of real hope :)

  3. grr_argh says:

did it have to go up against baseball?

  4. Kristen says:

Good to hear Dollhouse is improving. I hope the one-week hiatus doesn’t do too much damage.

  5. jords says:

Still not the numbers I’d like to see, but last night’s episode was SO GOOD. Apparently the played a bit with the show order (grr!) so this was supposed to be the 2nd ep, and last week was meant to be the third, and THAT would have made much more sense.

I know, I’m one of those Joss crazies. But I love the show and am hopeful that the numbers continue to improve…even if just 20-25% a week.

  6. Cody says:

I love the show and hope it doesn’t get canceled. The show is progressing and getting better and better, and last nights episode was the best so far. It’s found it’s groove but FOX just isn’t promoting it and hasn’t hardly promoted it at all this season. How do they expect it to do well when there is no advertising, a bad time slot, and 2 horrible sitcom lead ins? Why FOX would team up an hour lon sci-fi show with 2 lame sitcoms “Brothers” and “‘Til Death” is beyond me.

  7. steve says:

not that great news but gives us a glimmer of hope we may get to see all 13 episodes they ordered.

  8. R.j S says:

til death did a little better this week. But i had no clue that the middle and Modern Family was on last night!!!

  9. Dave says:

Did anyone else see a promo that specifically mentioned Summer Glau’s arrival in three weeks?

She must be a big selling point :3

  10. grr_argh says:

@jords. i’m glad they switched the episodes if it’s true. this was a much better episode to take a hiatus on. hopefully it was good enough for that positive word of mouth to start spreading. I love dollhouse, but the first two episodes weren’t good enough for me to recommend the show. after last night’s episode i can finally recommend!

  11. Johana says:

wait that’s good demo for smallville right? I am still confused, and they beat FOX, so Dawn must be thrilled

  12. Max Sleven says:

    Really slow night last night.

This isn’t any hope at all in my opinion, FOX would have needed a 1.3 or a 1.2 AT THE VERY LEAST to even begin to justify a return on the 23rd. Dollhouse already aired 3 episodes and the ratings were 1.0, 0.9, 1.0. That’s not an upwards trend, it’s consistently terrible.

  13. Ricardo says:

Better than nothing. I take what I can get. Hope it goes up in the finals.

  14. full data table added

  15. grr_argh says:

do you guys think it was Eliza hitting the interviews this week that caused the uptick? or the fans?

  16. Marc says:

Any idea how Sanctuary and SGU did on SyFy? I was hoping something would be released sooner than Monday/Tuesday.

  17. Michael says:

Note that Dollhouse still got tied by Smallville in the demo and beaten in total viewers- not much of an improvement.

  18. Josr says:

The Dream team of Ghost Whishperer and Medium still proving themselft every friday im so glad that Cbs pick Medium

  19. Gabriela says:

iTunes/Amazon/DVD/beatibg Fox in demos….I don’t see CW leaving Smallville free just yet

  20. forg says:

At least there’s a show in the 2.0 demo again. Numb3rs barely beat 20/20 now, I think well this show is really in danger

    Wow(?)nearly identical numbers for Brothers/Til Death :D

  21. dsfjr1190 says:

Wow. Smallville is finally getting good and then its moved to Fridays. Way to go, CW.

    CW = Crushed Weekly

  22. James17930 says:

C’mon Dollhouse, you bastard. Grow, grow!

  23. Tommy says:

@Dario – I wouldn’t say a 1.4 Demo on Friday night makes Leno a loser for the night. I’m sure NBC is very happy with that.

  24. grr_argh says:

i honestly believe that Dollhouse would at least grow to the #2 position if FOX promotes it. c’mon, FOX!

  25. Gusar says:

Dollhouse will air at least two additional episodes. I guess they want to see if pimping Summer Glau will have an effect. But that hiatus next week sure isn’t helping things. Here’s hoping for the best.

  26. That is great news. Also its audience was higher with a *very* good episode which will hopefully help it when it comes back.

  27. Tommy, Dario didn’t say it he just posted (I’m guessing) Marc Berman’s write-up. I’m going to remove it and add a link.

  28. Alex says:

Please for the love of god, move Smallville to Wednesday, Dawn.

  29. Dario says:

OH SORRY! I forgot to say: i didn’tt write that. That’s from Marc Berman.

  30. Tommy says:

oh ok, I still wouldn’t consider it a loser though, would you Robert?

  31. Dillan says:

Smallville deserves a much better slot, or at least an encore, because the quality this year is unmatched. Last night’s episode was truly wonderful.

  32. forg says:

For what is worth, Smallville beat FOX in the demo and almost even in total viewers. But I wish it would go higher eventually.

Next week, Ugly Betty returns, just wishing all the best for the show. My prediction is 5 million viewers and 1.8 demo. But I’m wishing for higher ratings of course but since even CBS is down this year, it will be really hard for Betty to succeed.

  33. David says:

Great numbers for Ghost Whisperer, I love this serie!

  34. meh says:

Oh what a disappointment, sluthouse actually went slightly up.

  35. Gusar says:

Hmm, any chance we could see a half-hour breakdown for Dollhouse?

  36. Joss's Biggest Fan says:

Did I or did I not say that Dollhouse’s ratings would rise, rise, rise!?! Answer: yes, yes, I did! Go me! Last season when the ratings rose, I wrote a poem in honor of the occasion, but I’m sorry to say that I did not do so for this time! I think next week when FOX is airing that awful, awful baseball game, I might have an awesome poem in honor of the week off of Dollhouse!

I think the arrival of Summer Glau will undoubtedly help with the ratings! Without her, who knows what the ratings for Firefly, The 4400, and that awful Terminator show would’ve been!! Kudos to Joss for turning to such a ratings powerhouse to guest star on his show!

Dollhouse! Dollhouse! DOllhouse! Dollhouse rules! Baseball drools! Dollhouse!

  37. Yobb says:

Very bad numbers for “Numbers”. It’s a series low in total viewers.
Do you think the show could be axed by CBS ?
Because “Numb3rs” could be replace by “Flashpoint”.

  38. Gusar, added to the post but here they are again:

    Here’s Dollhouse’s half hourly breakdown (A18-49) (A18-34)(P2+)

    9p: (1.0/4) (1.0/4) (2.295M)

    9:30p (1.0/3) (1.1/4) (2.198M)

JBF, I look forward to the poem! (almost as much as the ALCS!)

  39. Justin says:

Dilan, I was thinking the same to but smallville just beat an encore of flash forward and new episode of brothers and it hasnt gotten under a 1.0 yeet. Right now people are saying Smallville is doing good for a friday show. Ghost Whisper is only getting a 2.0 and its lucky because most shows on fridays wont be watched all the time since people go out more.

  40. forg says:

Although I don’t like the fact NBC yanked Southland before its second season premiered but I must say Law and Order/Dateline combo works for them well for this night.

  41. Gabriela says:

    and Smallville breakdown please? :D

  42. Dave says:

I may have selective amnesia here, but weren’t Firefly’s ratings higher than anything that is ever shown on Friday nights on any channel these days?

  43. Dirk says:

The ratings for Dollhouse are still absolutely pathetic.
It should be taken out the back and put out of it’s misery before it suffers any more.

  44. Tommy: I look at the ratings very differently than Marc Berman almost always, but Leno is a longer conversation for me than just a passing offhand “winner or loser” designation.

    Gabriela: Here’s Smallville’s half hourly breakdown (A18-49) (A18-34)(P2+)

    (0.9/3) (1.0/4) (2.309m)
    (1.0/3) (1/1/4) (2.291m)

  45. grr_argh says:

    @Dirk

shut up and let the fans have this moment, will ya?

  46. forg says:

I hope The CW would consider placing something other than an ANTM repeat in the 9pm slot, this is the night that they could seriously rank 4th in the demo and maybe viewers.

Does anyone know if the ANTM repeat is a contractual thing for the CW that they can’t let it go. I understood its existence when they still had Sunday nights, it was okay filler but now that they are now only programming on weeknights, the repeat for me is unnecessary.

  47. grr_argh says:

    @Dave

a quick google search turned this up

“Last Friday night Firefly managed 2.4/4 with its episode “War Stories”. In November it managed 2.8/5 with “Shindig”, 2.9/5 with “Safe” and 2.9/5 with “Ariel”. So it has dropped even lower.”

  48. Gunsmoke rule is definitely in play with Firefly comparisons. Sure, its numbers were higher than anything on now, but they were LOWER than anything on THEN :-)

  49. Julia says:

    Gunsmoke rule.

  50. Max Sleven says:

“grr_argh”, if this is a moment to celebrate for Dollhouse fans, then you guys are totally clueless. You’re celebrating that the ratings went up a tick back to the disasterously awful ratings of the Season 2 premiere? This season of Dollhouse makes Season 1 of Dollhouse and Season 2 of Terminator look impressive, and yet Terminator was canceled and Dollhouse barely squeezed by after massive budget cuts after last season. Doesn’t sound like you should be celebrating anything at all.

  51. Max Steven – T:SCC started with a much bigger audience and was on a premium night for most of the second season. Of course T:SCC had better ratings!

  52. Sharon says:

I’m pretty certain thats the third week in a row that Law and Orders gone up.

  53. Dave says:

    @squiggleslash

I think one could more fairly refer to TSCC’s low-rated Friday Night Run, which started at 1.3, dropped to 1.0, ticked back up to 1.3 and got canned.

Dollhouse’s run over the same period started at 2.0, followed by a cartoonish whistling sound.

  54. grr_argh says:

    @Max Steven

we’re celebrating because if the rumors were true, we get to see the other episodes. had the ratings fallen from last week then the show would’ve been pulled off air. so you see the reason now? we’re not as naive as you think. we know a 1.0 is still low. but it’s just enough to keep the rest of the episodes on the air. that’s all we really wanted. we know it won’t be enough for a back nine or let alone a season 3. so please, shut it.

  55. Robert says:

When does summer come on Dollhouse and for how many episodes?

  56. Max Sleven says:

That doesn’t mean Dollhouse fans should be happy with these numbers, they should be as worried as ever, squiggle.

Unlike TSCC, Dollhouse always had lead-ins, less competition, and a steady timeslot. TSCC having to change timeslots half way through a season didn’t really do wonders for viewer retention.

  57. jj says:

I think nbc is scared of “medium” that’s why they cancelled “southland”—imaginative theory, “too dark” for 9pm please!

  58. Anil says:

Yayy GO DOLLHOUSE! I hope it rises enough to be renewed.

  59. anne says:

HEY DO YOU HAVE THE HALF HOUR NUMBERS FOR YESTERDAY’S EPISODE OF SUPERNATURAL?? OR THE QUARTER HOUR BREAKDOWN??? CAN YOU POST IT PLEASE???

  60. Max Sleven says:

“grr_argh”, this is not enough for Dollhouse to stay on the air unless FOX execs are willing to keep putting their jobs on the line week after week.

  61. Ali says:

Very very happy for Dollhouse. The show is still in danger though. I think if it manages to climb to 1.5 and maintain that, it could have a shot at renewal for another 13 episodes. I think they should keep its seasons as 13 episodes.

  62. JenSmith says:

Smallville is not going to move back to Thursday or anywhere else. It’s doing as expected on Friday, better than anything the CW can put in that slot at the moment. Smallville is on it’s way out. It’ll most likely get it’s final 10th season and then sail off in to the sunset.

This season has been fantastic so far, and yes, it’s a shame it’s on a Friday, but as long as it does well enough by the CW standards, I think it’ll be fine.

The CW has to cultivate it’s newer shows. Vampire Diaries is a hit for them and it was a smart move to put it on Thursdays.

  63. Lisa says:

Those Dollhouse numbers still completely stink. Nothing to celebrate there, unless of course you hate the show!

At least Ugly Betty will be back next week and the night will perk up somewhat for me. Maybe we should predict its ratings.

  64. Joss's Biggest Fan says:

Robert, since you are so much looking forward to my poem, I have reproduced my poem from last March!

Props to my main man Joss Whedon,
    for despite a lousy lead-in,
    His show’s finally succeedin’,
the ratings are no longer bleedin’!
    Thank you, oh Eliza Dushku,
for your front side and your tush, too!
Critics may think you’re made of wood.
But I think you’re pretty darn good!

    Justice, Vanished, Jezebel James–
These are some of the marquee names
Of FOX Friday night shows more lame
In the scripted shows ratings game!
Jonny Zero started its 18-49 score
at 2.2; Then it hit the floor!
(“That could happen here,” you might be thinking,
but if so, then you’ve been drinking!
No, Dollhouse will not be sinking!
Oh, and Dollhouse is not stinking!)

6 years ago, John Doe started at
4.3, but then you knew that!
Add in DVRs and Dollhouse is flat!
Dollhouse’s ratings are so much better!
Disagree and you’ll get a letter!
Plus Dushku looks good in a sweater!
    Even better when she’s wetter!
    Dollhouse! Dollhouse!! Dollhouse!!! Dollhouse!!!!

  65. Anon says:

    WOO HOO!
Dollhouse even rose to a 1.1. in the second half hour. THIS IS AWESOME! If this keeps up we can watch it til May for sure. And with the DVR included it’ll be even better numbers.

  66. Gusar says:

Robert wrote: “When does summer come on Dollhouse and for how many episodes?”

Summer is in episodes 5 and 6 and then later in the season (not yet known publicly in which exact episodes). Episode descriptions (plus a great article about the show as a whole): http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2009/10/dollhouse-joss-whedon-eliza-dushku.html

  67. grr_argh says:

    @Max Steven

why the Dollhouse hate? Brothers and ‘Till Death did worse but you’re just focusing on Dollhouse. are you one of those bitter TSCC fans?

  68. Tar says:

Summer join dollhouse episode 5 (episode after next) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30

  69. Gabriela says:

Thanks Robert, I am curious in how they lost viewers on the half hour nad yet they increased on Demos

Wonder if the CW has something to say about this

  70. Buddy says:

Does anyone else think that ABC’s choice of comedy reruns is a covert test to see how Modern Family would pair with The Middle on a rejiggered, Hank-less midseason Wednesday night?

  71. Robert says:

Would CBS be happy with Mediums performance? id stll rather it be getting a 2.1 just to be safe.

  72. Max Steven – T:SCC had Monday night, which is way better for ratings than playing on a Friday evening, following a show that had shed 80-90% of its audience, followed by following an unrelated already canceled prison drama, followed by following some awful unrelated sitcoms. And it’s worth noting that when T:SCC and Dollhouse were playing on the same nights, Dollhouse was always slightly ahead.

One can come up with many reasons Dollhouse is failing on its own merits, but to argue that it’s ever had a good lead in and therefore should be doing better on a Friday than T:SCC did on a Monday is ludicrous. And Dollhouse didn’t start with a 20 million post-game taster followed by a ten million viewer regular premium timeslot.

As far as celebrating the figures go, we’re celebrating not because anyone likes these figures, but because up is good, especially when the rumors are that Fox has told Whedon that anything except up = cancellation. You can’t blame us for being at least a little happy about this.

  73. Bryan says:

Did Ghost Whisperer get the same ratings like the previous year?? but the number of viewers is def. down :( is it becasue of medium??

  74. Gabriela, especially when dealing with relatively small numbers that are rounded, it would be very easy to go up by ~130K adults 18-49, and still drop by ~30K total viewers. CW won’t have anything to say about this!

  75. hessian says:

80% of the 18-49s are watching something other than network TV.

    80%.

That number should keep network suits awake at night, their pillows drenched in a giant pool of flop sweat.

  76. Robert says:

Thanks Gusar. Im hoping FOX at least wont pull the show till summer Joins the show. after that they can lol

  77. Riff Rafferty says:

Dave writes, “I may have selective amnesia here, but weren’t Firefly’s ratings higher than anything that is ever shown on Friday nights on any channel these days?”

What, you mean after it lost a third of its premiere audience? No, even with The Gunsmoke Rule, 4 mil viewers is decidedly not higher than anything shown on Friday nights on any channel these days. It would, however, presumably beat anything The WB is offering (were it that The WB were still a network). Because there were some weeks where “Firefly” couldn’t even do that.

  78. Max Sleven says:

TSCC has nothing to do with this, I brought it up to demonstrate that it was canceled even though it had considerably higher ratings on Fridays than Dollhouse has now. My point is these numbers do not merit a return to TV after the two week break.

Why would I waste my breath on shows like Brothers and ‘Till Death? They’re cheap half hour comedies and they’re not in competition with Dollhouse.

  79. Dave says:

    @hessian

I doubt the executives worry at all. By the time the chickens come home to roost they’ll have written themselves multi-million dollar retirement packages out of the network’s carcass before it is entirely picked clean.

  80. Gusar says:

@Max Sleven: Dollhouse is cheap too. Waaaaay cheaper than TSCC. TSCC was $3 million per ep in season 2, a little less in season 1 (this info comes straight from Josh Friedman). Dollhouse was, I heard, $1.5 million per ep in s1, and less than a million per ep in s2.

  81. Gusar says:

In addition to episode cost, TSCC was a WB production so Fox doesn’t see DVD and international syndication money, while Dollhouse is a Fox production. Sure there’s a difference between Fox Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox Studios, but still.

  82. notty22 says:

Why are people bringing up The Cameron Chronicles, because they are obsessed with the Black Widow of Television , Summer Glau. Don’t worry in 3 weeks she will grace Dollhouse with her fanATICS following and the show will then be cursed and axed. Its inevitable. Then the world will have to deal with another generation of Firefly sentiment syndrome ! Its always better in memories!

  83. Dave says:

    Summer Glau appeared on CSI.

  84. Mark says:

    @Robert,

Fox was showing promos for a new Brothers to show on sunday at 7:30pm/6:30pm, is that its new time slot??

And did you hear that Cougar Town, Modern Family, and The Middle were picked up for full seasons of 22-23 episodes??

  85. Max Sleven says:

FOX execs were hoping to make Dollhouse a cheap to make cult classic that gradually builds up a modest viewerships. Instead, Dollhouse continued to bleed viewers and couldn’t even hold steady. There is no way that FOX will keep it when they can make more money by running re-runs of House or Lie to Me in that timeslot.

Also, compared to Brothers, Till Death, or re-runs, Dollhouse is not cheap and the Season 1 DVD sales were unimpressive anyway.

  86. UH says:

I woild like a T-1000 to terminate both the TSCC bitter fans and notty(I hate Summer Glau and Ihave an hurge to tell this to everybody every 2 freking post in this site )22 :)

  87. Bill Gorman says:

Dave, hessian, Publicly they *never* worry about it. It’s like an unwritten rule. Never acknowledge the cable competition.

Privately, they have to be worried, but it may be somewhat of as Dave suggests. They worry about an “emperor’s new clothes” situation where the broadcast ad pricing premium collapses while they are still in the game. ;)

  88. Mark? You obviously don’t read our blog religiously. We posted about the ABC pickups within minutes of them being announced on Thursday. Then it was overtaken by the surprise cancellation of Southland.

FOX is trying out brothers at 7:30 on Sunday (where I think it actually probably works better). What that will mean for 8pm Friday is TBD (they could run two ‘Til Death), but so far there have been no official updates to FOX’s schedule for 10/23. Next Friday, 10/16, as has been said repeatedly is game one of the ALCS on FOX.

I would not be very surprised with a very different Friday schedule on 10/23, but I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t change much/at all either

  89. Gusar says:

@Dave: And in Cold Case. While CC is likely in it’s last season now, Summer was there years ago.
If we wanna talk Black Widow of tv shows, there’s a more suitable name (also a Firefly alum): Gina Torres. Last year she was on Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone. Any of those shows still around? Further, she was in FlashForward yesterday, and look at it’s ratings.

  90. grr_argh says:

    @notty22.

so Summer Glau cursed The Big Bang Theory?

  91. Tory says:

I think some shows were definitely affected by the playoff game last night. It was unexpectedly great. Tied things up in the 9th and went into extra innings. I had planned on checking the score, not watching, but it was too good to turn off.

  92. pisher says:

I watched last night’s Dollhouse–best one I’ve seen, but still not very good. Tim Minear is a better writer than Joss Whedon, but there’s just nothing you can do with this cast and concept–it’s an inherently unfixable show. A few good moments, some halfway decent lines, but overall, a narrative mess.

How could the uncle just walk out of the heavily guarded compound with one of the Dolls?

How could a college professor afford to pay for an extended fantasy of Echo posing as one of his students trying to seduce him for a better grade? That would cost more than he earns in a year.

And I’m sorry–did I miss something? The former FBI guy is a trained profiler? Most FBI agents aren’t profilers–it’s a very specialized skill. Only on TV do they all know how to walk inside the minds of monsters. And that’s all Dollhouse is–formulaic cliche-ridden TV. Just a shade better produced than the standard procedural crap. And still getting better ratings than it deserves.

  93. Chad says:

    “@notty22.

so Summer Glau cursed The Big Bang Theory?”

Angel survived another 2+ seasons with Summer Glau guest starring.

Let’s see how long BBT survives now. :)

Anywho ignore that closet cyborg lover, notty will feel much less self hatred and resentment when he admits he likes toasters.

  94. Mark says:

    Thanks Robert!

  95. Mark says:

And yes Robert, I do read your blog religously. I guess I just missed it…

  96. James Cee says:

I have heard that Fox are happy with the ratings and are picking the series up for a back 9 order. If the series can maintain it’s consistency then we will get a 3rd season.

  97. pisher says:

Dude. Summer Glau was on Big Bang Theory for all of three minutes–as herself. Not enough time for the curse to sink in, and she didn’t have to pretend to know how to act. ;)

  98. Christopher says:

Ghoast wisper and Meduim are up happy to see that

  99. Colicos's Ghost says:

What did Stargate Universe do last night?

  100. repeat after me: there aren’t any overnight cable ratings that come out as quickly as broadcast ratings.

If it performed amazingly well, Syfy might issue a release this afternoon, but I wouldn’t expect to see any numbers for SGU or the Sanctuary premiere until Monday at the earliest. If I’m wrong, we’ll post the release.

  101. Jim says:

Thank G-d for the dream team, Ghost Whisperer and Medium, two of the best hours on television! CBS was wise to pick up Medium and match it up Ghost Whisperer, would be great if they found a way to do a crossover show too! See Alison and Melinda work together on a case!

  102. Carol says:

I don’t expect Dollhouse’s ratings to get any better than what they currently are. A .1 rise to me isn’t a rise but a fluctuation unless it becomes a trend. They’re down to the die hard fans in my opinion. People checked out the series and either liked it or didn’t. I know For those that didn’t like it, I don’t see them tuning in again. I also don’t see a lot of viewers on the bubble. I know for myself that I’ll typically tune into shows that interest me and if after a few episodes I don’t like them (I hated “Fringe”) then I tune out for good.

The producers of Dollhouse didn’t seem to address any of its issues from the 1st season and didn’t bother retooling the show at all. The only thing they seem to have done is some stunt casting with Jamie Bamber and Summer Glau. Although I like those actors (Summer Glau a lot) neither were on big successful series that might mean a big draw.

Dollhouse’s numbers are pretty much consistent with a 1.0 and a low 2+ million viewers, which any way you cut it to me that is just horrible – both the rating and the number of viewers. FOX could just run a TV movie on Fridays for 2 hours from 8-10pm in my opinion and get better ratings than that at a much lower cost.

I don’t see advertising the show more or moving it to another night helping at all. People tuned in initially to check it out and most it seems didn’t like the show and tuned back out. Its concept, characters/actors, and storylines are essentially the same as last season with no retooling.

I don’t believe that Dollhouse will be renewed. The only question in my opinion is will all 13 episodes of season 2 actually air. I don’t see anyway that FOX would order the back 9 episodes. They may make more money just releasing the remaining episodes on DVD.

I can also see local affiliates dropping FOX for Friday Nights if their numbers don’t rise. I thought that there was a bottom rating/viewing number that was written into the contracts that allowed local affiliates to stop airing network shows if they dropped below that.

Also is any network going to give Joss Whedon another chance? So far none of his series were big ratings or viewing hits. Buffy & Angel were considered big for the WB but weren’t the top rated shows of even that small network and would have been considered a bomb on ABC, NBC, or CBS with their ratings. Personally I liked Buffy and Firefly but not Angel. To me Dollhouse is just there and a huge disappointment from the concept, the casting, and the storylines.

  103. Dave says:

The list of Whedon shows is Firefly > Angel > Buffy > Dollhouse.

The only thing anyone would ever argue with is whether Buffy was better than Angel.

  104. Carol says:

I didn’t like Angel but I believe it did better rating wise than Buffy.

  105. r2zv2n says:

man cbs is so strong…in every night they have strong shows…..where is abc friday?:))

  106. Joshua says:

Dollhouse might pick up some viewers if more than ten minutes of an episode were important to watch. So far this season, forty minutes of every episode have been nothing but filler.

  107. Joshua says:

Also, last night’s episode was not good. It was like a middle schooler’s understanding of serial killers and the FBI.

  108. Patrick says:

All three CBS shows have now won their timeslots for three Fridays in a row, right?

  109. Andrea says:

    Robert,

you should post a poll to see if DH returns on 10/23 or not. :)

  110. Cody 2 says:

I’m just glad Flash Foward repeat did well. Maybe once the repeats are done those people will watch Thursday.

  111. Alisss says:

Dollhouse is AWESOME serial and the only reason for low rating is Friday night …most people is out of their houses . I think this show is amazing with really cool idea for human soul. And I think Joss is genius. FOX must keep DOLLHOUSE !!

  112. Dingo says:

Leno is NBC’s youngest-skewing show on Fridays. Another bad sign for the Peacock.

  113. grr_argh says:

when do we get DVR numbers for Dollhouse premiere?

  114. Theoacme says:

    Nielsen Friday overnights haiku:

    Dollhouse not sinking
    But definitely not well
    Crushed ice for me, please…

    …’Til Death and Brothers
    I feel sorry for Garrett
    Where is his Raymond?

    Medium is large
    Great ratings for CBS,
    Mistake for peacock

    Hewitt’s Whisperer
    Tops on this Friday evening,
    And twice on ion

    ABC repeats
    Trounced by Dawn Ostroff’s Smallville
    She still hates Clark Kent

    Are Numb3rs’ numbers down?
Yes, but the ten o’clock hour
    Closest on the night

    NBC second?
Law and Order was a blast
    And Leno okay

    Hey there, JBF:
Can you praise Joss in haiku?
    Here’s an idea:

    Dollhouse on FX
    Dushku walking in the nude
    A six point demo :D

  115. Adam says:

This was definitely the best stand alone episode. It was so creepy, but hilarious. I hope the ratings won’t drop down any further.

  116. Holly says:

GW is finally back above a 2.0, but Numb3rs is still very down. It really needs to pick up.

L&O is almost up to respectable Friday numbers. With Dateline sticking around, NBC looks OK for the night.

I don’t know what FOX was hoping for out of the comedies, but losing to the CW is never positive. Dollhouse went up 0.1, but a 1.0 is hardly reason for celebration

  117. AO says:

    @ Max Sleven,

Your info is completely wrong. Dollhouse BEAT T:SCC EVERY single time that both were on the same night. Here are the numbers. If you need help understanding them, then please feel free to ask for help:

Why would I waste my breath on shows like Brothers and ‘Till Death? They’re cheap half hour comedies and they’re not in competition with Dollhouse”.

If you were here only to talk the ratings then why wouldn’t you be interested in the shows that are performing the worst? Brothers and ‘Till Death officially did worse than Dollhouse, so wouldn’t those be of greater interest to you, unless perhaps you had an agenda against Dollhouse? :)

  119. Max Sleven says:

Are you illiterate? I am comparing those numbers to this season’s DH numbers.

  120. MWA says:

Glad to see Medium back up over 8 million. I am thinking as the winter gets more and more cold, the Friday night ratings will go up.

    Wednesday: wander.
    Thursday: shower, watch tv.
    Friday: wander.

I just like to keep you guys informed and ahead of the latest tv viewing trends.

  122. CdeLeo says:

Oh, can someone send me an E-mail in six weeks to remind me to change the vcr tape? Thanks!

  123. AO says:

    @ Max Sleven,

No, but I can’t see any reason why an intelligent person would be comparing T:SCC’s numbers from a previous Season with Dollhouse’s numbers for this Season, especially if you are looking to a different day. When both were on the same night then Dollhouse won, any other numbers are just worthless.

  124. chicc_o says:

YAY for Dollhouse , but way better than last week , now i kind of have hope

  125. leo says:

I find it interesting and sort of a desperate move? They advertised an episode 3 weeks in advance because Summer Glau is in it… and then they said in 2 weeks there will be a new episode. heh

I wonder if Summer will really have that much of an effect on the ratings of Dollhouse.

  126. AO says:

    @ Max Sleven

    Okay, here’s what you said:

    “October 10, 2009 at 10:07 am
TSCC has nothing to do with this, I brought it up to demonstrate that it was canceled even though it had considerably higher ratings on Fridays than Dollhouse has now”.

Hence my explaining that when the Fox execs were comparing the ratings of the two shows LAST year, then it was VERY easy for them to see that DH was the clear ratings winner and so give it another Season for that reason alone.

Based solely on the ratings that Fox had at the time of their decision: Dollhouse > T:SCC

  127. Dan says:

OK CBS was up overall except for Numb3rs, FOX was up overall too and maybe FOX’s Dollhouse may stick around for a few more airings since it did rise slightly. Law & order and Dateline have both gone up, it sucks Southland wont be joining in on October 23.

  128. Chad says:

Clear ratings winner? Dollhouse kept dropping and dropping, and in the final few weeks it ended up worse than TSCC and Prison Break.

All three of those shows were horrid, ratings wise. They kept it because of costs and because their pilots are garbage.

  129. Dan says:

forg – I agree, Law & Order/Dateline combo works great but Im still pissed about Southland. NBC could have aired it mondays at 9 if Trauma got axed.

I see the Til Death/Brothers combo being moved to sundays soon.

  130. grr_argh says:

    @chad

“clear ratings winner?” yes, in his context it was. he obviously said dollhouse was the clear ratings winner when it was up against ttscc. not before or after, but during. that’s the only point he is trying to make.

  131. Beta says:

Anyone who watched last nights Dollhouse should be able to agree to at least one thing, Enver Gjokaj is an incredible actor, and no matter the fate of this show I hope to see him on another in the future.

  132. AO says:

    Thank you grr_argh,

That’s exactly the point that I was making and the only comparison that I see that matters. That’s why Robert & Bill have their “Gunsmoke Rule”.

  133. Budo says:

@Beta: Agreed. If there’s one thing that Dollhouse has given us, it’s Enver Gjokaj. It’s also what’s killing the show: having such brilliant people around only makes Dushku’s talent appear inadequate for such a demanding role. I’ll watch whatever he’s in from now on.

  134. pisher says:

I watched last night’s Dollhouse, and I saw no incredible acting whatsoever. But I did like the way Harry Lennix delivered the line “Topher has ethical concerns–Topher!”

Good actor–who deserves better than Dollhouse.

None of the ‘dolls’ are headed for stardom.

And the much-touted Summer Glau, having failed to make it on her own, is headed back to the Joss-house in a few weeks.

Just in time to have it fall down on her.

    But she’s used to that.

    :D

  135. pisher says:

Btw, I just LOVE the people who defend Dollhouse and Joss Whedon by disparaging the talents of the actress he chose to create Dollhouse AROUND.

You could give the Republicans lessons on how to defeat your own objectives.

    :D

  136. jani says:

@AO: “Your info is completely wrong. Dollhouse BEAT T:SCC EVERY single time that both were on the same night. Here are the numbers.”

what numbers do you use? dollhouse s1 ratings:

    1-12

    4,760 2.8 5
    4,250 2.7 5
    4,181 2.7 5
    3,572 2.2 4
    4,258 2.5 4
    4,136 2.6 5
    3,859 2.4 4
    3,435 2.2 4
    3,503 2.2 4
    2,920 1.9 3
    3,062 1.9 3
    2,700 1.7 3

  137. AO says:

    @ jani,

I use the numbers from this site. What numbers do you use?

  138. Max Sleven says:

My point is that Dollhouse this season s far worse than TSCC and Dollhouse last season, which means Dollhouse is getting CANNED cuz it almost got canned after last season anyway, and those numbers were better than these. I don’t know how you can say TSCC went up against Dollhouse, they were on at different times and TSCC served as a lead-in for Dollhouse. Once TSCC finished it’s run at 1.3, Dollhouse crashed and burned and is still crashing and burning… HARD.

  139. William says:

Smallville is missing Michael Rosenbaum (Lex).

  140. Sparkle says:

    I miss TSCC :(
Thankyou for the Smallville 1/2 hr. breakdown.:)

  141. widowmaker says:

Come on! I hate to use these words, but is this real life?
    Dollhouse improve? Of what? 0.000001?
    Please.

  142. AO says:

    @ Max Slevin,

“My point is that Dollhouse this season s far worse than TSCC and Dollhouse last season,”

    That is certainly true.

“which means Dollhouse is getting CANNED cuz it almost got canned after last season anyway, and those numbers were better than these”.

Not necessarily. The numbers are definitely not good and I would not at all be surprised if it were canceled, but those numbers were from last Season and many shows this Season are bringing lower numbers than they did last year, at least so far. Further, DH was quite a bit more expensive last year. This year is both cut it’s costs and Fox Studios also agreed to charge the Fox Network less for the show. Given that, it’s current numbers are still not enough to give it a renewal, but if it can continue to build a bit more, then it may have a chance.

“I don’t know how you can say TSCC went up against Dollhouse, they were on at different times and TSCC served as a lead-in for Dollhouse. Once TSCC finished it’s run at 1.3, Dollhouse crashed and burned and is still crashing and burning… HARD.”

You were the one that introduced T:SCC into the discussion. I agree that there is not a perfect way to compare them but think that the only way to do so is by looking at them when they were on the same night. It’s true that DH declined after T:SCC finished, but what other factors might have been a play there? And do we have any reason to suspect that T:SCC would not have experienced similar declines?

Whatever arguments can be made, I continue to find the fact that on the same nights, DH consistently did better in the ratings, to be the most compelling argument supporting Fox’s reasoning.

And is it continuing to crash and burn? Based on last week’s numbers then that seemed to be the case, but considering that it went up this week then it appears to be leveling off and perhaps is on the upswing?

  143. meh says:

No, sluthouse is done for. This season ratings are even worse than last, what else ya need to know.

  144. Boris says:

    jani says:

“what numbers do you use? dollhouse s1 ratings….”

    Those are household numbers.

  145. Shem says:

Smallville is better than last season & its improving in ratings- I am hoping for 3mil+ and a 1.4-1.5 demo rating in 18-49.

    FOX fridays are crap.
NBC improving- I can L&O shoot over 8 million soon.
    ABC still in repeats.
    CBS is again on top.

  146. Anon says:

Why do people hype over Summer? What’s special about her? She’s pretty and all but Eliza is way hotter and tops her.

  147. Shem says:

Some Soaps tear up Friday Shows. Y&R had a 1.7 demo rating in 18-49 Sept. 28- Oct. 2, while Dollhouse and Smallville including others, have far less and that’s Daytime!

And soaps are dying but Primetime shows can die alot faster!

  148. Boris says:

    Shem says:

“Some Soaps tear up Friday Shows. Y&R had a 1.7 demo rating in 18-49 Sept. 28- Oct. 2, while Dollhouse and Smallville including others, have far less and that’s Daytime!”

That’s women 18-49. The only comparison ready to hand is W18-34 versus the CW.

  149. notty22 says:

Summer Glau HAS NO SHOW, so her obsessed fanboys are stalking out all shows that they perceive are a threat. They keep bringing up Terminator, lol if you think thats bad, give em a moment and they will cry you a River about Firefly (pun intended). She’s to good for this show, she was to good for that show, they are relentless. Guys give them a new poll to cheat on.

  150. Carol says:

I don’t think you can really compare TSCC’s ratings to Dollhouse since they weren’t on at the same time. 8pm is way too early a timeslot for a show as violent as TSCC. I believe that it would have done a lot better if it had aired in the 9pm timeslot. Actually in my opinion both TSCC and Dollhouse should be aired at 10pm due to violent content.

  151. DaddyWarbucks says:

What a bunch of boneheads…”Dollhouse” is up…up to what?

    A friggin’ 1.0 from last week’s 0.8 …whoop-dee-do !!

“Dollhouse” and “Brothers” numbers are awful … FOX may as well show re-runs of “My Mother The Car”…couldn’t do much worse…and would cost a whole lot less…

Face it…we have a combination of two factors:

1- Todays TV exec is “clueless”
2- They may as well manage for margins not ratings…

Not only is the Fall Slate of new shows awful…bonehead couch potatoes would rather be texting, surfing youtube, talk mindlessly on their cell phone for hours, etc. then watch the new current glut of slop.

  152. Pny Boy says:

This show is DOA..face facts folks…it will be lucky to survive the rest of the season.

    You can’t polish a turd.

  153. Red says:

Bye Numb3rs. Nice seeing ya but you’ve overstayed your welcome. Come next May, you’re history!

  154. AO says:

Personally, I don’t mind how bad the ratings are as long as they keep being made.

They started shooting Episode 8 this week, so if Fox is committed to wait until at least Episode 5 airs in 3 weeks then the cast and crew should be able to complete Episodes 8 & 9 and hopefully get a start on 10. That’s a good head start in case the worst happens and leaves me more hopeful that at a minimum all 13 will be produced.

  155. Matty says:

Pny: You CAN polish a turd – I saw it on Mythbusters!

  156. batman says:

they need to rerun supernatural after smallville… i really hate watching supernatural after vampire crapedy. I would definately be up for it after smallville though. might be due to nostalgia of the double bill for the last 4 years but still i’d like them reunited even if its only an encore.

  157. usedtolovecoco says:

Fox seems content to allow Dollhouse to live now, but I wonder if they will during Sweeps. I’m not a ratings guru like most of you, but it seems like letting Dollhouse continue after October 29th would be… a bad thing?

And people love Summer Glau because she’s awesome. I can’t think of a single time she’s ever turned in a bad performance, on anything. She throws herself into every role 110%. She’s a unique talent.

  158. leo says:

The reason Dollhouse was picked up and tscc died was because Dollhouse had better upside because it was a new show.

tscc would not have come back any better than it was at the end of last year. everyone was bailing on the show.

fox made a call .. and if they had to do it over again they would probably make the same call.

  159. bob terns says:

Jay Lameo is beating Fox Fridays. That is not good.

  160. Joompa says:

Yes, you can polish turd. Have you seen Mythbusters?

  161. AO says:

    pisher,

Great point, except for the fact that your info is completely wrong and that totally invalidates the point that you were trying to make.

Dushku had a deal with Fox and went to lunch with Whedon and together they created the show. I would guess that Whedon did most or all of the work, but there is no denying the fact that Dushku chose Whedon, not the other way around.

    :)

  162. CHRISTINE says:

OK SO IS THAT GOOD OR BAD THAT WE BEAT FOX AND ABC IN THE DEMOS. WILL SMALLVILLE BE CANCELED MIDSEASON OR WILL WE ATLEAST GET A FULL SEASON 9. WILL THE RATINGS PICK UP OR WILL WE DROP. I THINK WE WILL NOT BE CANCELED AND WILL GET A SEASON 10. THE RATINGS FOR SMALLVILLE ARE BRINGING IN BETTER FRIDAY RATINGS THAN THE FUNNY SHOWS. I THINK RATINGS WILL PICK UP AND DO DVR RATINGS COUNT AS TOTAL VIEWERSHIP. BASICALLY SHOULD I BE WORRIED OR NOT!

  164. Christopher says:

NBC must be mad for letting Meduim go good to see it beat Dateline

  165. Bill Gorman says:

Christopher, NBC may regret its decision for other reasons, but not on a cost/benefit basis. Dateline probably costs 1/4 (maybe less) of what Medium costs, and it achieved 79% of Medium’s 18-49 ratings last night.

Since advertising revenue is closely tied to a show’s 18-49 ratings, getting 79% of the revenue with 25% of the cost seems like a win to me.

  166. Cosmic Bob says:

The last two weeks for Dollhouse, the previews sucked, but the shows themselves were quite good. Whoever is making the previews should be canned.

  167. Chad says:

“The last two weeks for Dollhouse, the previews sucked…”

I saw some during Fringe the night before. There was the half naked Eliza sprawled across the bottom of the screen, the other seemed to take a comedic approach to tie it in with the crappy sitcom lead-ins. I understand Whedon can do campy, but I still didn’t feel it was the right fit.

Going to go with another poster’s idea, Fox should return Killer Bees and When Babies Attack on Fridays. Or whatever they were…

  168. chet says:

the episodes are getting much better for dollhouse
hope the numbers continue to increase
i hope this show gets to stick around

  169. leo says:

Is NBC going to become a news network with Dateline, Leno, Conan, Fallon.

Everything on a Friday night is going to stink bad, or not do as well as it could. People go out on Fridays, most of us anyway.
Dollhouse is getting really good, i’m glad the ratings went up, but they need to be a lot better. Heres to hopeing Summer will do her thing!

  173. Dan says:

chet – the Dollhouse numbers hopefully will get high enough to stick around, but the show will still be axed.

Livefeed has DVR number out for Dollhouse.

  175. those were for Dollhouse’s premiere on 9/25. And Hibberd’s headline is extremely misleading. Dollhouse had the biggest increases over Live+SD, but that was because its viewing was so small. Remember, percentage increase can be particularly deceptive. In absolute terms Dollhouse had the 36th largest increase over its live+SD numbers, and trailed that same Friday night’s Law & Order by 86,000 when it came to absolute increases over live+SD (1 million for L&O vs. 914,000 for Dollhouse).

  176. buffywrestling says:

Uhm, yeah, I thought that would be kinda obvious. I was just posting a link, I wasn’t making any sort of statement. Thanks for pretending I’m an idiot though.

  177. Bill Gorman says:

Our DVR post is up! Read the numbers for yourself.

  178. bored_viewer says:

How much of an impact will dvr ratings have on Dollhouse’s fate? It’s been suggested that a rerun of House could easily bring in higher ratings than a new episode of Whedon’s show. If that’s the case, what difference would dvr ratings make? A person watching Dollhouse on dvr would skip the commercials, while the larger audience watching the House repeat wouldn’t have that luxury.

  179. forg says:

I saw the Final Ratings via Travis Yanan and Ghost Whisperer went up to 2.2 demo (8.782 viewers) and Medium went up to 2.0 (8.288 viewers)

  180. forg says:

In the guess Medium ratings promo, I saw someone guessed 8.260 million, so probably that’s the winning guess :D
