THE CW SHOWS LARGEST PERCENTAGE GAINS FROM DVR VIEWING ACROSS THE BOARD FOR ANY BROADCAST NETWORK DURING “PREMIERE WEEK”

90210 BIGGEST PERCENTAGE GAINER OF ANY NETWORK SHOW, INCLUDING TRIPLE DIGIT GROWTH IN SEVERAL DEMOGRAPHICS

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, GOSSIP GIRL, TOP MODEL and ONE TREE HILL All Show Significant Audience Growth in Live Plus Seven Ratings

October 12, 2009 (Burbank, CA) – The CW Network showed the largest percentage ratings gains of any broadcast network during the “premiere week” of  September 21-27, 2009, according to Nielsen live-plus 7 day ratings vs. live only viewing.  The CW’s biggest increase came in its target demographic of women 18-34 (69%, 1.42rtg v. 2.40rtg), followed by adults 18-34 (65%, 1.05rtg v. 1.73rtg), and

women 18-49 (61%, 1.14rtg v. 1.84rtg).

For the third consecutive week since its September 8  premiere, 90210 scored the largest percentage ratings gains of any show on television across a number of  key demographics and total viewers, including triple digit gains in The CW’s target demographic of  women 18-34 (114%, 1.30rtg v. 2.78rtg), women 18-49 (116%, .95rtg v. 2.05 rtg).    The show also registered impressive increases in adults 18-34 (97%, .96rtg v. 1.89rtg), adults 18-49 (92%, .73rtg v. 1.40rtg) and total viewers (73%, 1.5M v. 2.6M).

Freshman hit THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also saw nocturnal audience growth across the board in live-plus 7, including women 18-34 (61%, 2.08rtg v. 3.35rtg), adults 18-34 (64%, 1.40rtg v. 2.29rtg), women 18-49 (52%, 1.93rtg v. 2.93rtg) and total viewers (41%, 3.3M v. 4.6M).

Veteran hits GOSSIP GIRL and AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL also benefited from strong DVR usage, with GG up in women 18-34 (71%, 2.00rtg v. 3.41rtg), adults 18-34 (71%, 1.30rtg v. 2.22rtg), women 18-49 (67%, 1.30rtg v. 2.17rtg) and total viewers (53%, 1.7M v. 2.6M); while ANTM soared in women 18-34 (85%, 1.65rtg v. 3.06rtg), adults 18-34 (72%, 1.13rtg v. 1.94rtg), women 18-49 (65%, 1.47rtg v. 2.43rtg) and total viewers (42%, 2.3M v. 3.3M).

The land of ONE TREE HILL also saw considerable gains across the board including women 18-34 (49%, 1.83rtg v. 2.72rtg), adults 18-34 (47%, 1.25rtg v. 1.84rtg), women 18-49 (53%, 1.24rtg v. 1.90rtg) and total viewers (37%, 1.9M v. 2.6M).

  1. Frank says:

hmm. nothing about MP? DVR ratings just as bad as regular ratings?

  2. Sparkle says:

So, not even a mention of Smallville’s #1 gain in demo % *sigh*

  3. JenSmith says:

    nothing about Smallville either.

  4. S says:

WOW they didn’t even mention Smallville. CW = pure suckage

  5. Gabriela says:

wtf? CW SUCKS!!! where is Smallivlle there?

  6. cool says:

Smallvile premiered a week after, they’re talking about the premire week.

  7. james says:

Any stats for Smallville about the W18-34, and W18-49 demo growth from DVR?

  8. Snap says:

Soooo, did they write this before the DVR numbers for Smallville came in or what? No mention at all? Lame.

  9. Gabriela says:

“premiere week” of September 21-27, 2009

Smallville premiere Septemebr 25th and the reason CW is #1 that week is because Smallville

Will The CW ever acknowledge Smallville achivements?

  10. Frank says:

I am really surprised CW didn’t use the press release to make any comments about MP? Didn’t the previous press release about DVR numbers mention MP?

  11. JenSmith says:

@cool, Smallville premiered the week they’re talking about.

Check out this thread for SV info, which had the highest percentage demo gains, tied with Dollhouse.

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/10/12/dollhouse-premiere-18-49-rating-increases-to-a-1-5-via-dvr-hopeful-or-futile/30214

  12. dsfjr1190 says:

    Why no mention of Smallville?

  13. S says:

I’d say write to them on the cw website (in the feedback section). I doubt we’ll get any answers but maybe next time they won’t “conveniently” ignore SV. God I hate them. Once Smallville has wrapped up, I can’t wait to see CW fail.

  14. Leslie says:

CW sucks at recognising how awesome Smallville keeps doing. They’re #1 in the DVR figures because of Smallville. Show some respect, CW.

By the way, the date for this article is 12 October. I am positive they had ample of time to include Smallville’s feat. Plain and simple? They didn’t want to.

  15. Bill Gorman says:

Leslie, DVR Live+7 numbers for the week of Sept 21-27 became available just this morning. It was still plenty of time for CW to include whatever they wanted in a press release, but it’s not like they were available days or weeks ago.

  16. Gabriela says:

What could be reason to not include Smallville

  17. james says:

Bill do you have any info in regards to Smallville’s W18-314 and W18-49 demo increase with DVR usage?

  18. it’s true, Smallville saw more growth from Live+SD both on an absolute and on a percentage basis in both 18-49 and overall viewing than Vampire Diaries that week.

I suspect this is exactly why the Smallville information is NOT in the press release. Its not really a conspiracy against Smallville, it’s just that celebrating its success comes at the expense of shows CW cares about more. Plus those other shows likely did experience better increases in the demo CW cares about, W18-34.

OK, perhaps that is a conspiracy against Smallville. Perhaps CW is also discounting it for “Friday night effect” (top two shows in terms of % increase were from Friday nights).

  19. Bill Gorman says:

While I regard press release tea leaf reading in order to glean actual information about what a network is thinking as folly, the CW certainly has hit a raw nerve with fans with its omission of Smallville in this release. I would read nothing into it that wasn’t already a given. (i.e. Dawn loves the shows she developed best)

I am still firmly in the “if the cast/producers of Smallville want to come back, they will be back” camp.

  20. Leslie says:

I know the figures for Sept 21-27 weren’t available until this morning. My point is that they STILL had plenty of time to include it and didn’t want to. I don’t buy into, oh, we made a mistake and missed it.

Bull.Crap. CW has no respect for Smallville and the awesome feat it just accomplished.

  21. S says:

I’m not sure that is the reason they discount it Robert. Only because last year, correct me if I’m mistaken, Smallville was the top show on CW for % increase.

I think you are right in your assertion that it makes their other shows look bad. Another reason I think Smallville was put out on an island by itself.

Once CW dies a horrible death (after Smallville is finished of course) I will be a very happy person.

  22. JenSmith says:

Smallville (or Supernatural for that matter) doesn’t fit the CW image of themselves.

In my uncharitable moments (disclaimer: I’m kidding around, mostly), I picture them gnashing their teeth when they got the news.

WHAT? We put it on Friday to get rid the darn show, why won’t it die? It’s the unwanted guest who wouldn’t leave.

I’ve always felt it’s still on the air only because WB wants it, which is why I think we’ll get a 10. Producers are on record saying they are planning for it, Welling & Durance are signed. It makes money for the WB and isn’t hurting the CW.

I feel like patting DO on the head and saying ‘there, there, one more year of this show and you are free! Free at last!”

  23. Gabriela says:

yeah once Smallville ends Dawn will be free, a free agnet looking for job

  24. Frank says:

According to the article posted earlier and referenced in here by Jen, Melrose Place did quite well in DVR viewing, so leaving that spin out of the CW press release is rather confusing to me. Especially considering one would think CW would use anything to mention a positive for the show. The missing SV mentions have been discussed here but as someone said, Dawn likes to mention things she and her team created. That’s why information missing about MP is quite surprising to me.

  25. Ricardo says:

What about Smallville? I hate The CW PR machine.

  26. JenSmith says:

@Frank, yeah, I’m confused why MP isn’t on this PR.

  27. S says:

    hahaha Jen^^

I get the same picture in my head. She’s done everything she can to kill it,basically put it on its own island, but its like the energizer bunny. It keeps going and going…

  28. KryptonSite says:

It’s really disappointing they choose to not acknowledge Smallville’s DVR gain. It and Supernatural have been such consistent players for the network, but I feel like Dawn O. has always had a dislike for them because she didn’t develop them herself. Even the praise for One Tree Hill doesn’t seem authentic.

I know Supernatural, say, doesn’t get the female demo, but let’s see something else do so well against the female-skewed shows on other networks in its timeslot. And considering the Friday move with very little promotion except for online, with DVR numbers factored in, SV has performed quite admirably.

  29. JadedGreen says:

Pfft. No mention of Supernatural. I guess Dawn wants to make sure her favorites are *in your face* The obvious bias makes me ill. Not all of the CW viewers are squealing, mewling fangurls of high fashion, low budget soap operas.

  30. Tiffany says:

CW won’t say anything good about Smallville. And really, I could care less what they say because the people who watch the shows and haunt the boards are the ones that actually know what’s going on.
We have our season 9, and we have hope for a season 10, no matter what Dawn O. says (or doesn’t say).

  31. Mandy says:

This is just more of the usual by DO and the crew. A show doesn’t make it to season 9 by accident, and the fact that it’s a show on the CW should be something these people are extremely proud of, instead of shoving it under the carpet like a piece of food you don’t want to acknowledge you dropped.

I sent something in to the CW from their website over a week ago and didn’t even get an automated “thank you” from them. I guess that just goes to show what kind of ship they’re running…a sad one.

  32. Kennedy says:

Where’s my beloved Smallville? Dawn O needs to die!

  33. Dee says:

CW, show some love for Smallville. Its my favorite show and I’m a 24 year old woman :)

  34. Cody says:

Now are we really that bitter to want the death of a person. Fired yes but not die

  35. solenn says:

wow. such a slap in the face of all Smallville and Supernatural fans. The two best scripted shows of the network, the ones being the best among all other CW shows in DVD sales, Itunes, and for Smallville the best in DVR viewings out of all shows of all networks, the only two shows that can hold despite having strong competition on Thursdays for SN, and being in a “death slot” for SV. Without SV and SN, Dawn Ostroff has only Vampire Diaries to keep the channel going. Once those two shows are gone, the CW will be a crappy channel for teens and it will have difficulties to stay afloat.
Too bad for Dawn Ostroff but the fans are still there and won’t go away despite no promotion at all. It’s a pity, because instead of wasting money with the limo for MP being driven around, the CW could have promoted SV more and more people would have known about SV being moved to Fridays and will even have gained some new viewers. Because, yeah not many people watch the CW apart from SV and SN and so wouldn’t know about SV being aired on Fridays with some trailers being aired only two weeks before the premiere, and yes, there’s still potential for SV to have new viewers, there are newcomers on SV forums who started watching recently and there would be more if there was good promotion actually made for SV.

There were so many good shows when it was the WB. Now the CW just sucks. Maybe with someone else at the head of the CW it would be better. No wait, there is no doubt it would be better. I can’t wait to see it die after SV and SN are gone.

This is a long rant, but like you said Bill Gorman, the CW has indeed hit a raw nerve by conveniently omitting SV. It’s not like we’re not used to see SV being ignored, but not talking about SV and SN in this press release is beyond ridiculous. Such an unprofessional behaviour makes me speechless.

  36. Zubair says:

GG as a “veteran” show?? Really? That is pretty laughable when they’re ignoring their true veteran shows Smallville and Supernatural. I guess anything over 2 seasons is a feat on this network. Watch VD’s numbers dip in the next 2 years. It’ll never get close to the type of longevity Smallville has shown.

  37. solenn says:

So Dee you’re 24, well I’m 22, and I don’t know if DO realizes it but many fans of SV are women in the 18-34 demo. SV and SN are not made-in-CW which is why they don’t suck. All the actors and staff of both shows are doing a great job and it’s shameful of DO of not making praise when it’s due, it’s also like a slap in their faces.
But I remember that the CW made a press release comparing Vampire Diaries’ premiere numbers with Smallville’s premiere ones from last year, while it was VD’s first season with all the hype from the movie Twilight while Smallville was in its 8th season. That was already lame. The CW is so desperate to make its own shows look good that she despised her other shows by doing so. Smartest move from a channel.

By the way, speaking of being smart, when will Melrose Place be cancelled?

  38. Dillan says:

How does Dawn Ostroff sleep at night? In all seriousness, it’s like she’s asking to be lynch mobbed by rabid SV fans.

  39. KILLCASTIEL says:

    CW + DVR = NOTHING

  40. The ratings press releases we (and others) post, that often become “news” on ours and other sites AREN’T TARGETED AT FANS OF THE SHOWS. They have one singular purpose: to add grease to the cogs of advertising sales. That’s their only purpose in life. So when the CW doesn’t spin the successes of Smallville or Supernatural, it’s because those are shows that don’t fit in with CW’s ad-sales pitch that is targeted at selling ads at a premium for women 18-34.

You can also conclude that especially airing on Fridays that when there are almost always new sci fi or horror movies or new video games aimed at young men, the CW doesn’t have a particularly hard time selling Smallville on the basis of the broader 18-49 demographics and so it doesn’t feel like it needs to spin it. Overall, for fans, that’s a GOOD thing, not a slighting. Now Melrose Place being MIA is another story…

  41. ebas says:

Smallville has indeed shown remarkable longevity but the simple fact of being around a long time doesn’t necessarily imply quality. There is a reason why Smaville gets so little critical acclaim. While the acting is decent, the writing is on the level of Heroes, constant retcons and lack of real character growth.

  42. Sally says:

Smallville is a horrible show and the ratings are currently reflecting that imo. It should disappear into obscurity already.

  43. JadedGreen says:

I’m not a huge fan of Smallville but it is far from a horrible show. Smallville and Supernatural are the only two shows on that network worthy of mention. If not for Twilight and teens, VD would suck as well. Some of the effects they use are laughable. While the show is not so bad, it still has to grow on me. I need a reason to care about or sympathize with any character on it and I haven’t found one yet. I’m giving it a chance, I’m just not impressed yet. SPN impressed me right out of the gate and they haven’t stopped yet. Even with their low budget and “Wal-mart” apocolypse, the crew on that show kick a$$. Some of their scenes have a movie feel and the editing is so good, you’d never know if or when they use a stunt guy. The heads of CW, MP, 90210 and GG should be embarrassed at their lack of creativity and talent. The actors who play Chuck and Blair are the only worthy actors from either 3 shows. JMO.

  44. Zubair says:

Thank you for that clarification Robert. Still dislike Dawn with a passion, but your reasoning makes sense and I’ll take it as a good thing (for now).

And to the above, any show with this type of longevity speaks to the strong fan base. I’m not talking strictly ratings, I’m talking about overall money making machine. With dvd and download sales included, not to mention syndication across networks/countries, Smallville is a well oiled money making machine. That is why it has lasted so long and its a testament to its loyal/strong base. So while it may not be enjoyable for you, there are many who still enjoy it and rightly so. This season is the best yet.

  45. mark wood says:

As has been mentioned this is all about promoting their female demo. And in that regard both Supernatural and Smallville do poorly.

Now Supernatural has seen ratings growth (year to year) in adults 18-34 and female in both 18-34 and 18-49, but that is (I am sure) all due to its lead in being a female driven show. So that most of its DVR gains is probably due to men.

And since Smallville out of all the renewed shows has a history of (percentage wise) having the worst performance in both female groups. Supernatural on occasion tie and surpassed them (and thats with Grey’s as competition) so I don’t think they would have gained a dramatic increase.

What it does show the CW (and Warners) is that Smallville and SN still do appeal to a larger number of people. That will most likely continue to equal larger overseas revenue and far greater DVD sales.

  46. Cody says:

Those who are questioning Smallville’s quality have obviously not seen the current season imo.

  47. mark wood says:

As for MP lets face it even with DVR results it couldn’t crack 2 million viewers. and had a meager 1.1 in adults 18-49.

While we know that isn’t that important to the CW. Those numbers still do generate some revenue. And based on their performance on adults 18-34 in originals as a 1.1 and a mere 1.5 in female adults 18-34 (which is low for a female driven show), that even with modest gains its female demo is probably not anything special.

  48. Tucker says:

I can’t often defend the writing and direction of ‘Smallville’, despite loving the show. But if people aren’t catching it this year, they’re missing out. It’s a completely different show than it was in its first years but this season it’s one of the better sci-fi shows on TV. And you can’t even compare it to the ridiculously overwrought, poorly thought-out, badly scripted ‘Heroes’.

In the last two seasons, ‘Smallville’ has really improved their characterizations, arcs and character growth. This season, in particular, is a revelation. ‘Heroes’ characters have hardly changed at all in 4 years and this season premiere revealed to me just how boring each and every character is. Plus, the show goes through a complete overall every 6 weeks. Finally, dumped it from my viewing.

In any case, talking about the numbers, it doesn’t surprise me ‘Smallville’ does this well in DVR. It’s a top performer on iTunes and various sundry other download methods.

  49. mark wood says:

    Cody

With everything perception is in the eye of the beholder. I haven’t cared (so far) for these three episodes of Smallville. But Smallville (for me) has always been very hit and miss.

I do like that they are making some forward progress with the character (just don’t like what they have done so far).

  50. james says:

Hmmm……if this was ONLY about the female demo, why is A18-34, A18-49 and total viewers included in the press release. I think someone needs to send the CW a memo that mark wood has proclaimed all demos besides the female demo as useless and not worthy of the keystrokes it took to write it.

  51. mgbhighlander says:

Most shows on the CW suck, including Vampire Diaries. I watch Smallville and Supernatural. That’s it. For the head of the network to ignore the number 1 show is ridiculous, shortsighted, and insulting. Smallville’s writing may never win awards, but the acting is great and the star of the show (Tom Welling) is fantastic. Based on the crapfest the CW has been putting out lately, Smallville will outlast Dawn O.

  52. tony says:

I really don’t watch the CW it just ain’t very good. I miss the WB…

  53. mark wood says:

    James

I hate the fact that the CW does focus so much on the female 18-34 demo. Trust me, I don’t watch any of the programs that do well in those demos. As I am not young nor female.

As to why they would include other key data points, thats simply, you want to show to ad buyers that your show hits your target demo hard, but it also appeals to others.

Even if it really doesn’t, you want that illusion.

  54. mark wood says:

Oh out of the full history of the CW these are the only shows I have ever watched every episode of. Supernatural….Veronica Mars…Smallville. I do watch VD, but only so I don’t forget that SN is on. I watched about 1/4 of Reaper, about 4 episodes of Aliens in America and I think that is everything.

  55. Cody says:

    Mark Wood

I’m sorry if my comment sounded obstinate. I just read it again and realized it probably came off as a little uppity and immature. My apologies. I should have been more direct in saying that to Sally and Ebas, as I wasn’t even trying to respond to your comment. What you stated is quite logical and makes sense, I’m just sad that the shows that are a little out of the norm did not receive any recognition. (Smallville, Supernatural–I don’t even watch SN)

  56. Cody says:

And I truly do not understand why the CW only strives to attract that one demographic. They should advertise more of Smallville, because I know MANY girls that love to watch it. (Tom Welling doesn’t hurt their viewing pleasure either!) I can’t speak at all for SN because I just don’t know enough about it, but I know it’s got quite a substantial following as well, and I’m sure they’re not all men. Oh well, as long as Smallville keeps on going, I guess I should just ignore the goings on of the CW PR.

  57. numbers fan says:

The CW focuses on one demographic because they have customers willing to pay them for it and because they have to worry about make goods if their shows underperform and having other shows with the similar demos makes it easier for the CW to make good on their demos promises. If one show tanks, then they can offer those ad buyers ads on other programs to reach the same number of people in the same demo they were originally guaranteed.

The CW’s business model is like Ann Taylor, not Wal-Mart. It’s a niche business model, not mass market.

The CW does business with ad buyers who want to reach young female consumers so the female demos of CW shows correspond to how much $ the CW can make airing a show. Just as Ann Taylor or L’oreal aren’t interested in how many men see their ads bc those aren’t their customers, likewise the CW doesn’t care for male tv viewers because they don’t translate into $ for them with their customers. This works for the CW because they get a reputation for delivering those types of viewers for the ad buyers looking to reach that female market and building a good reputation is very helpful in keeping steady income coming in. Plus, as you can see below, ads on a female skewing shows like ANTM makes double the ad money for the CW than Smallville did in 2008-2009 season because ANTM attracts women and Smallville skews male.

2008 Top Money Makers for the CW per 30 second ad

    $103,714 ANTM
    $67,908 One Tree Hill
    $62,139 Gossip Girl
    $58,347 90210
    $54,323 Smallville

    $48,942 Stylista – Canceled
$44,533 Everyone Hates Chris – Canceled
    $37,982 Supernatural
    $33,305 Privileged – Canceled
    $29,583 The Game – Canceled

    Source: http://tvbythenumbers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/10-spotcost-100608.pdf

The CW doesn’t gives Smallville when it does well with women. The CW did issue a press release for Smallville when it had an increase in female demos last Spring.
    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/01/30/the-cw-scores-strong-thursday-as-smallville-and-supernatural-hit-season-highs/11808

If Smallville made the CW as much money as the other shows, the CW would boast about it more. Consider that Friday Night Smackdown had higher overall viewer numbers than Smallville is getting right now in the same slot back in 2006, but heavily male skewing Friday Night Smackdown was only able to make $25,000 per 30 second spot back when ad buyers were being more generous.
    Source: http://adage.com/images/random/tvchart06.pdf

If Smallville would make the CW more money, then the CW would show it more love, but it doesn’t. The CW makes its money off ad revenue and that correspond to W18-34 Demos on the CW (see above), so by that measure of success (W18-34) even Melrose Place did better than Smallville in the final national ratings for the week of 9/21.

    2.6/9 The Vampire Diaries
    2.4/6 Gossip Girl
    2.3/7 America’s Next Top Model
    2.3/6 One Tree Hill
    2.1/6 90210
    1.7/5 Supernatural
    1.5/4 Melrose Place
    1.1/3 The Beautiful Life (Canceled)
    0.9/3 Smallville

  58. Josh says:

    sigh. I miss the WB

  59. Patrick says:

This really pisses me off. I mean I get that Dawn hates SV, but I mean seriously why not show love for all the shows on the CW that have done well with DVR increases. Lets say nobody even watches the CW and they read that release. They think that only those shows have made the CW number one which is a lie. Smallville and Supernatural’s numbers are the majority of the increases. So that idiot woman excludes them and adds the shows she WANTS to spotlight and it pisses me off. Like they dont promote Smallville or Supernatural at all and they get all the top ratings on the network. I mean nothing against women or anything but I dont give a you know what about the womens ratings cause all she does is put the shows that keep the CW breathing way way in the back and put the shows that have low overall ratings but have high womens ratings. I watch 3 shows only on the CW Smallville, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries. Smallville has this year and possibly 1 more year before it wraps up. The talk with Supernatural is that this is the last year with Sam and Dean on it, and if it goes on it wont be with them which means its dead. Then there is TVD, one good show cant keep the CW above water. Fire the idiot Dawn ASAP.

  60. very confused!!! says:

can someone help me out here please i dont really understand…

    Freshman hit THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also saw nocturnal audience growth across the board in live-plus 7, including women 18-34 (61%, 2.08rtg v. 3.35rtg), adults 18-34 (64%, 1.40rtg v. 2.29rtg), women 18-49 (52%, 1.93rtg v. 2.93rtg) and total viewers (41%, 3.3M v. 4.6M).

what does the the total viewers mean??? that 3.3 million watched it and that with dvr viewing 4.6 million watched it?? Anyone???

  61. Angela says:

‘numbers fan’ sounds a awful lot like KKW.com on imdb (Exact same points repeated)

    lol

What you have just proven with your analysis is that the CW needs a new business plan to attract advertisers and Dawn obviously doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Everybody Hates Chris on a friday night was making more than Supernatural on Thursday (One of the highest paid timeslots for advertertising revenue) and yet it got canned?
Also, Gossip Girl with the highest w18-34 demo on their network was making far less than Top Model.

If only it was that simple to analyse how much money a show makes a network. Other networks seem to be doing much better without focusing on ‘women 18-34′..so maybe its time the CW rethinks its strategy.
With all the women watching the network, its kind of pathetic that only 1 show can go above $100k.

    CW Network= Epic Failure !!!!

I don’t know who kkw.com is on imdb. If he/she posted those points, either 1) they keep up with the business situation on the CW (a lot of people do) and realized just as I do that how much money a show earns is the whole point of ratings to begin with or 2) they just saw my explanation for why Dawn Ostroff does what she does to someone else and decided to copy it.

Maybe you don’t like the CW’s business model, but there is logic behind it. The CW makes A LOT more money from shows with high female demos. That’s why their press releases focus on that demo as an accomplishment – it is the only accomplishment that matters to their customers.

It would be hard for them to try to compete with the big four networks in the general marketplace for ad buyers. That’s why niche markets are created in all sorts of businesses. It’s why businesses don’t try to compete with WalMart and open up specialty shops hoping when people are looking for certain types of items, they’ll make the effort to go to them instead of WalMart because of their reputation. CW trying to build a reputation as the go-to network for young women demos is the same idea.

Also, the W18-34 demos I included above were just for ONE WEEK, and ANTM’s demo was unusually low for that episode. ANTM has since then rebounded both in overall viewers and in the female demos.

As for ad prices for Gossip Girl vs. ANTM, the other variable is how rich/affluent the female viewers are with the richer the better. That info is never posted online afaik.

The WB needs to take back their network and the CW needs to go Cable

no offence but smallville for many years has been the number 1 scripted show on the cw/wb for along time and was last year aswell, the only reason its down to a 0.9 is because its on friday night, its pretty much matching Dollhouses ratings and thats on fox.

  65. numbers fan says:

No offense back to you Ryan, but from a business perspective (and TV ratings are all about business) the figures provided by this website show for 2008-09 the #1 CW show was ANTM and the 2008-09 #1 scripted CW show was One Tree Hill followed by Gossip Girl and then 90210. Smallville only came in before Supernatural and the already canceled shows.

    $67,908 One Tree Hill
    $62,139 Gossip Girl
    $58,347 90210

Also, you may be interested to know that MORE people DVR’d Smallville’s 2008 premiere on Thursday night (888,000) than its 2009 premiere on Friday night (813,000). Meaning at least 75,000 viewers decided to stop DVR’ing Smallville’s premiere from last season.

    Episode 8.01 Odyssey
    Persons Live = 3.916 million
    Live+7 = 4.80 million
    Time shift = +888,000 viewers

    Episode 9.01
    Persons Live = 2.576 million
    Live+7 = 3.389 million
    Time shift = +813,000 viewers

The night change to Friday night could account for at least some of the S8-S9 Yr2Yr Live viewing erosion of 1,340,000 viewers for the premieres, but those former viewers weren’t loyal enough to the show to DVR it to watch it later. Instead, the number of people who were watching Smallville via timeshift/DVR went DOWN from last year by 75,000 which shows less interest in watching the show overall.
