Cable ratings: Record-breaking Monday Night Football, MLB playoffs on TBS, NCIS, WWE RAW, and Wizards of Waverly Place top weekly cable charts

Posted on 13 October 2009 by Robert Seidman

Favre

Last Monday’s  Monday Night Football contest where Brett Favre led his new team, the Minnesota Vikings to victory over his old team the Green Bay Packers set a record for the most-watched broadcast on cable television (edging out a MNF game last year) with 21.839 million viewers.

Next up was lots of MLB baseball on TBS led by the first game of the Twins/Yankees series.  Sadly for TBS, three out of four series went the minimum of three games.    Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place had a few more viewers than Monk on Friday night.  The season finale of Army Wives averaged 3.931 million viewers and came in 22nd (it came in 18th based on household rating though)

My new favorite show, Sons of Anarchy was pushed off the the list by all the baseball and was number 29 with 3.656 million

Sadly, I’ve made the decision to no longer field requests.  We always post whatever data we see via press release or other trade publications already.  You can  subscribe to our RSS feed and  you can also follow @TravisYanan on Twitter.  During the week he usually posts some (not all) cable results for each weekday, usually late in the afternoon on the east coast (and Friday night data isn’t posted until Monday) and he posts the links to that info on his Twitter account to the info on Marc Berman’s PI Forums.

    Where's Psych!?!?
  • wwe rules
  • Delsy
I was expecting bigger numbers for Wizards.
  • Erikk
I'm also quite interested in Degrassi's season 9 premiere ratings on TeenNick. I wonder how well the show did in the ratings. Any links or info about this?
  • TVBill
Haha - no problem Robert. I am indeed not as active as Travis. :-) But I'll come by and share when I can. (Travis and I actually get the same exact data, so I try not to repeat what he posts.)
  • Dingo
Robert (and Travis and TVBill), if there was a "CableRatings.com" site where we could go to get the information, we could go there and stop bothering you. I don't blame you for doing what you need to do but I've read your post a few times. All I got from it was, "Keep your fingers crossed and something drops in our lap, we'll tell you about it."
  • TVBill - thanks! I was going to include links to you in the above post but you haven't been as active on your Twitter lately, and I worry people will start making requests directly to you.
  • TVBill
    @Sharon, e

This Sunday's MAD MEN got 1.529 million viewers, 0.6/1 A1849....
  • Jose
    Degrassi ratings?
  • Number Cruncher
I forgot to add that he also posts shows from HBO and Showtime.
  • Christian
Degrassi season premiere Friday @ 8pm et on TeenNick. Please!!! No one, including Travis, ever posts digital cable numbers!
  • Number Cruncher
I don't actually have a Twitter but I follow Travis Yanan's twitter enough to know which cable networks he typically posts on a weekly basis. (This is over the past few weeks. I'm aware some of these shows are at the middle/end of their seasons. Also it should be noted that he only posts shows that air in primetime.

    ABC Family
    Syfy
AMC-he really only posts Mad Men ratings
    MTV
    Lifetime
    E!
    USA
    TNT
    Bravo
ESPN-only NFL and College Football games
VH1-I check for this but it is incredibly rare for him to post VH1 shows

Like Robert said he typically posts a link on his Twitter to his daily cable posts that are located at the pifeedback forum during the late afternoon. The safest bet for most people who don't have time to wait would be to check his Twitter after 7-8pm Eastern unless he is busy or there are delays.
  • E- OP, I'm guessing means "original post". But I'm not sure if Mad Men's numbers for Sunday were posted or will be posted anywhere else. You can count on seeing some numbers for Mad Men regardless (certainly I will post about the finale) and for at least the premieres and finales of Breaking Bad.

I'm guessing Travis will post some Breaking Bad numbers on the PI Forums once it's back on the air. If you go to Travis' Twitter account and start clicking on some of the links he's posted, you'll see what I mean.

@e -- Re: "Shelley, what is “the OP”? operation..? ocean pacific..? even google can’t answer it.."

OP = Original Post or Opening post. (The one at the top of this page, with the photos and chart.) Did you even read Mr. Seidman's entire post? Clearly not. He gives instructions.
  • e
Shelley, what is "the OP"? operation..? ocean pacific..? even google can't answer it..
  • Shelley
@e -- Re: "Please I want to know MAD MEN ratings. It’s going to be hard to find these numbers without your help.."

Mr. Seidman tells you were to go to find data/ratings in the OP. It's not hard at all. Deal with it. He said he's no longer taking requests. Don't be lazy, do some work yourself. ;)
  • e
Please I want to know MAD MEN ratings. It's going to be hard to find these numbers without your help.. And what about when BREAKING BAD will come back? :(
  • Writestuffla
What?! No Diet Tribe? I'm shocked, I tell ya! Shocked!1
  • Thanks, Shelley and LOL at Samantha!
  • Samantha
Don't be such a retentionista, Ron!
  • Shelley
Clearly people never read your posts!! It's amazing. I'm sorry it came to the point where you'll not take requests anymore. But I'll still be by regularly, love your site, Mr. Seidman! Keep up the good work.
  • Robert Seidman, your quest to be fair to your cable watchers is admirable. The only flaw is that your ratings deserve analysis. If you can't give us commentary, albeit, "milk toast" let's get somebody overthere that can! When I completed journalism classes in college years ago, the professors taught us that investigative reporting was the number one rule, then working for NBC News, 30 years ago, the same was true....based on what I read today...modern day newsreporting or OPEd writing...is total opinion not backed up with facts. Let's get back to the basics!
  • Ron
You would think SportsCenter would be higher following the #1 cable broadcast of all-time.
  • Andy
    Did you miss this Sharon?

Sadly, I’ve made the decision to no longer field requests. We always post whatever data we see via press release or other trade publications already
  • Number Cruncher
Sucks you won't be taking any more requests but it's cool. I have to say this is the first week where I actually watched 12 of the top 25 cable programs. Of course it was all baseball and football so I definitely won't end up watching so many highly rated cable programs for next week and most likely every week thereafter.
  • Sharon
Any numbers for Mad Men please Robert.
