| Adults 18-49: Rating/Share | 4.0/10 | 3.9/10 | 3.1/8 | 1.9/5 | 1.5/4 | 1.2/3 |
| Adults 18-34: Rating/Share | 2.9/8 | 3.5/9 | 2.0/6 | 1.8/5 | 1.7/5 | 1.6/4 |
| Total Viewers (million) | 11.50 | 10.36 | 14.30 | 5.36 | 3.75 | 2.57 |
It was a night of mixed leadership with ABC winning the most-viewers and CBS leading with adults 18-49 and FOX leading with adults 18-34 (having commanding leads with both women 18-34 and men 18-34).
Last week, the overnight detail wound up being adjusted significantly due to a record breaking Monday Night Football contest airing on the ABC affiliates in some local markets. I’m not sure if the exciting Jets vs. Dolphins game will break any records but it makes comparing to last week’s fast nationals more iffy than usual, and also note that the Dolphins game aired locally on the CW affiliate in Miami, so some football viewing that will be stripped out in the finals is included in CW’s numbers below.
With that said, it appears Heroes and Trauma have stabilized and were up a tick each versus last week, unfortunately at very low (too low to stay on the air) levels for Trauma (1.8), and even if Heroes is still one of NBC’s better performing shows because NBC’s average have dropped so far, a 2.4 is better than last week’s preliminary 2.3 — not that girls kissing girls seemed to boost the ratings much, at least it wasn’t another new record low 18-49 rating for an original episode of Heroes.
I know there are many Castle fans who were disappointed last Monday when the preliminary 3.0 adults 18-49 rating dropped to a 2.2 rating in the finals. Don’t be too surprised if last night’s 2.4 rating drops somewhere to around a 2.2 as well due to a minute or two of Dancing With the Stars overrun that will be stripped out in the final numbers.
Elsewhere as has been the Monday rule, House was the night’s most popular program with adults 18-49, though it was down a tick from last week’s 5.1 to a 5.0.
Over on CBS Two and a Half Men continues to lead The Big Bang Theory in viewers (13.89 million vs. 12.78 million), while Bang has the edge with adults 18-49 (4.8 vs. 4.6)
Over on the CW (and keeping in mind that in the Miami market, the football game aired on the local CW affiliate) according to the CW:
Compared to last week, OTH was up 17% with women 18-34 (2.1/6), 15% in adults 18-34 (1.5/4), 14% in women 18-49 (1.6/4), 9% in adults 18-49 (1.2/3) and 24% in total viewers (2.6mil).
GOSSIP GIRL was flat with last week in adults 18-34 (1.7/5), and up 6% in women 18-49 (1.8/4), 9% in adults 18-49 (1.2/3) and 19% in total viewers (2.5mil). GOSSIP GIRL ranked #1 in its time period with female teens (1.8/6).
GOSSIP GIRL built on its OTH lead in among women 18-34, adults 18-34 and women 18-49, and matched OTH in adults 18-49.
In the late night battles Conan and Dave seemed locked in a tie with adults 18-49 last night each with a 0.9/4 rating/share in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with people meters. Conan had the edge with adults 18-34 (0.8.4 vs. 0.5/2).

Definitions:
*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

I’m not a Nielson box… so me watching Castle live or DVR doesn’t affect… anything.
Correct?
If it did, I’d consider starting to watch it live.
Eric, you can relax and watch as you want. Nielsen’s not keeping track of you
HIMYM – 3.5 yay! After seeing how the other 8PM sitcoms (Old Christine, Hank and Community) performed last week in the demo, I’m really impressed now with HIMYM’s numbers!
AOP is up to 3.0, I think it will get a full season pick up. I hope someday TBBT beats 2.5 Men in viewers but the 18-49 demo win is amazing, hopefully it could flirt with 5.0 demo again
I can tell you with complete certainty that TRAUMA will be removed from the Monday schedule ASAP.
It seems the CBS comedies are at stable levels. Purpose and Mother are up as well as Men and Theory. AOP should get a full season soon, or atleast additional episodes. Trauma and Heroes are consistent but it seems Trauma is looking to be axed soon. Heroes will likely only be saved because of the demo. Castle isnt doing that great out of dancing, however Im still confident in a full season (and that ABC wouldnt give up on the only drama they renewed from last season). Lie to Me is also only doing OK out of House but it should still get a full year.
Forg, always possible TBBT could be adjusted up, it was in last week’s finals. We’ll see!
AOP was up from last week, huh? Oh dear Lord, it’s going to stick around for a full season…
The two bubble shows of the day look quite stable. Accidentally on Purpose looks very good now with its 3.0 average demo, and although Castle’s 18-49 is far from great, its lead-in isn’t a powerhouse anymore, either. Anyway I hope if ABC would be mad enough to cancel Castle, USA or some other cable network would step in to save it. It would be perfect for USA.
At least Catsles numbers were up overall from where it was last week.
Robert, oh yeah I forgot about that TBBT usually goes up in the final ratings, I hope they will do it again this week
Good numbers for Gossip Girl, Hilary Duff rocks as Olivia Burke!
I love Heroes, but these ratings are bad :/
i hope heroes continues to increase
House is a beast as always. Only show I care about until Thursday though I still wish Fringe would be put after it. It’s a lot more compatible with House than Lie to Me and that should be behind Bones. Ah well, another solid week for Hugh and company.
The kiss on heroes was nothing. No way was it going to boost the ratings. Good to see it level out though. This season has been better than last season.
In terms of new and sophomore series
Castle will likely get a full year soon
Lie to Me will likely get a full year soon
Trauma will be axed soon
Accidentally on Purpose should get a full year soon
Other than that all other returning monday shows are safe
Not a whole lot of surprises:
AoP needs to go, sooner or later. When can RoE take over?
Trauma needs to go now.
Castle may as well stay for a while, given how bad the rest of ABC’s lineup is.
Lie To Me is filler at best, and should not be given a backorder.
Man, did Big Bang’s success come out of nowhere this season! What a difference a time shift makes! I figured that thanks to 2 1/2 Men, their HH would go up, but they are tops in teh 18-49 for CBS’s Monday? That’s nuts!
Yayish for Heroes
!!!!!!!
David how were Gossip Girl’s numbers good? Even if compared against the network the fact that GG can only get 0.2 above a friday smallville show is bad! The CW shows all do bad (apart from VD and ANTM – and even they for any other network would be v.bad) so I don’t how they is much to smile about. Especially seeing as The CW needs to prove itself to Warner or the channel could be dead (as it looses around 100-300 million a year).
Dan, I think Bill has a post coming that will strike (some more) fear into the hearts of Castle fans. Personally I see Castle as “on the bubble or worse” when it comes to a full season pickup. Many seem to go with the notion that ABC can’t NOT pick-up ALL THREE of Castle, Eastwick and The Forgotten, and they might be right, but I’m not yet sold that “ABC can’t”
Love House last night, Im glad that they’re always able to win the night in 18-49 demo, but the numbers and the decreasing pattern week after week is this bad for the show? Or is this a normal trend?
Yay for HOUSE!
David,
Hilary Duff was not even on GG last night.
Does Nielsen have … 12.91 million Nielsen boxes/diaries watching House?
Or do they have like 500k and then they round up the numbers to account for the people that don’t have their boxes/diaries?
CSI: Miami seems a little low but it’s still got the best demos of the three CSIs, I’m surprised how popular it is because it’s rubbish yet entertaining.
Trauma will be gone soon I bet.
Good numbers of OTH – last nights episode was really good.
Can Chuck even survive this Monday car wreck?
Not bad for Monday
Castle’s tie-in book is doing well on Amazon (#9) and was #26 on the New York Times Bestseller list last week and expected to be up this week. Any thoughts on how this impacts the show or not? Is there any history of such a thing?
“Dancing With the Stars” is starting to show chinks in its armor. It was only third in the demo in the 8 o’clock hour. It dropped from 3.7 to 3.3 from week to week in the first hour and from 4.2 to 3.7 in the second hour. That’s about a 11-12 percent drop. Blame it on Tom DeLay’s departure?
@robert
which of these 3 abc-bubble- shows has a better chance for a full season pick up???
NBC’s Monday line-up seems to have bottomed out, which is probably as close to good news as NBC is going to get right now. It’ll be interesting to see how long this line-up stays as it is, axing Southland before episodes aired has made axing anything else an issue right now.
Elswhere I’m disappointed with Lie To Me’s numbers which would surely mean that Fox are as well. They had to be expecting better things out of the House/Lie To Me combo and I know I was. If Lie To Me can’t find an audience out of House then unfortunately its probably a lost cause.
And the question remains how long can Castle hold on by being the strongest of ABC’s weakest shows…?
Lacy, I could be wrong but I think this mostly happens with shows over the course of a season. It’ll stabalize and spike from time to time but mostly things go down as the season goes on for one reason or another. Nothing at all to be worried about for House.
:0
I messed up.
Phew, Heroes stabilized. That’s a good sign… I guess. Last night’s episode was good, I dare say the best of this season so far.
Also, good for House! I enjoyed last night’s episode more than last weeks.
Becki I wouldn’t put too much stock in the Castle book having much effect on the show’s future. It seems unlikely that ABC is making enough cash from the book to see the show in a different way but I have no idea.
Great Episode of Castle last night. It would be a sad world in which it’s “on the bubble or worse”. The almighty Demo-god.
I think the ratings for Men and TBBT will get better as the weeks go on.
thirdsaint, thank you very much for the answer! Phew, that is music to my ears I was worried about House! I just got into the show, bought all DVD’s from Season 1-5, and now I’m definitely hooked.
Diane, Dancing is exactly the same as last week. The #s were high last week because some states had football on instead of Dancing on ABC. The final #s were a 3.5 which is exactly the same as this week. Still very low from previous years.
See, if Heroes was a cable show, those would be good ratings for them.:)
Wow those TBBT numbers are nice. OTH does really well considering they never promote it.
Which show is doing worse? Trauma? Or Mercy? They are pulling almost the same numbers. But you could make an argument either way.
Trauma could be doing worse because it is in a later time slot and has a decent (not great) lead in.
Mercy could be doing worse because it is running against weaker competition.
I understand that, all things being equal, Trauma goes first because it is more expensive. But would Mercy really do any better in that slot?
I guess it really doesn’t matter anyway. Neither one is acceptable, lol.
George, certainly Castle has had the best performance of the three in recent weeks, but outside of the other two shows and The Middle (which ABC has given a full-season pick-up) its ABC’s worst performing scripted show. I don’t take the pick-up of The Middle as necessarily a good sign for Castle because ABC is very committed (at least for this year) to its comedy block. And the rules around pick-ups/renewals for 30 minute sitcoms aren’t always quite as numbers-based as the decisions for one hour scripted dramas.
NBC should have dropped Trauma as soon as the numbers for the pilot came out, this would have been a great place to probably put medium or southland until something better came up
or they could just put one of the Law and Orders up there
I’m absolutely thrilled that House is doing so well in the ratings. It’s also great to see Lie To Me doing pretty well in the ratings. I absolutely love that show, and I hope that it gets picked up for a full season. House and Lie are my favorite shows to watch on Monday nights, and I always look forward to watching them both every week.
Monday is a pretty weak night for NBC and “Chuck” fans should hope they don’t put that show on Monday’s because I doubt it would do substantially better than most of what they have on. I hate to say it again but really the bright spot for NBC on Monday is “Leno” still getting his approximately 5 million viewers and the 1.5 rating that NBC promised advertisers for a show that costs peanuts compared to the other shows.
Heroes was ok
. I went to sleep at 10:03(after looking at the watch). How was the episode of CSI: Miami. I missed it. Anyone?
I am so impressed with Two and a half men’s ratings. These ratings for its seventh season are amazing and it’s great to have it do well week after week. It’s the number 1 comedy on TV right now. This and Seinfeld are both the best shows out there. I’m glad Two and and a half men is renewed for 2 more seasons. It’s really funny. And we also have the big Seinfeld reunion coming next month. The first of five episodes already aired. Keep watching both!
I’m absolutely thrilled that House is doing so well in the ratings. It’s also great to see Lie To Me doing pretty well in the ratings. I absolutely love that show, and I hope that it gets picked up for a full season. House and Lie To Me are my favorite shows to watch on Monday nights, and I always look forward to watching them both every week.
I will never understand how TBBT does so well in the ratings. Two episodes was all I could take of that crap.
Ouch on Lie to Me. If its ratings drop any further, they’ll schedule it as the lead-in to season three of Dollhouse.
That’s a joke.
Obviously.
Why would ABC wait till November to announce a decision on Castle? While the ratings are stable it’s pretty clear it’s not going to expand behind DWTS at this point.
What are the chances ABC moves Castle to a new timeslot to see how it performs before cancelling it?
You are Actually right about Heroes being in Cable Jim. Which channel do you think tough?
As slutcoms go, “Accidentally on Purpose” is turning into a halfway watchable one. Oh, I haven’t actually laughed at anything yet, but it doesn’t make me jump for the mute button like that crudfest that’s on before it. So… that’s a start, right? Jenna Elfman and Jon Foster do have pretty decent chemistry, so maybe they can parlay that into something, you know, funnier. Certainly, last night’s numbers will give them plenty of time to find their groove.
“Castle” might not be keeping the “Dancing” lead-in forever, but it ain’t going nowhere. It’s stable and, creatively, it’s improved a lot. Plus, it’s a detective show created by a guy named Marlowe. I’m sorry but you can’t cancel a detective show created by a guy named Marlowe. It’s just too funny!
Good ratings and demos for One Tree Hill. Glad to see an increase in every category. The episode last night was very good and next week looks just as good. So glad One Tree Hill is still churning out good, stable, and respectable ratings for the CW.
Lee I’d like to see ABC move Castle into Eastwick’s slot after the comedy block where I think its a great fit I don’t however think they will. I would imagine given the depth of ABC’s mid season line-up that Castle is done after its 13 episode order unless it picks up over the next couple of weeks.
I dont see the renewal of the comedies to have anything to do with the drama renewals. With FlashForward being the only new drama getting picked up, and Eastwick and Forgotten performing like crap, I could see Castle getting a full year.
interesting gossip girl went up without tyra banks / hillary duff (She took a one week break -i think unless they deleted her scenes lol)
Thanks, Rob. I didn’t realize that. I thought Dancing was at least pulling low 4’s in the demo. I guess its numbers weren’t quite as good as I thought.
Accidently on purpose is a great show! hope that gets a full season
Looking at the numbers I’d say Accidently stays on air until Rules is ready to come back…
Can you release the ratings and viewership for the DOLPHINS vs. JETS Monday night game from last night-
I am sure it was pretty high- Maybe not as much as the hyped Favre but significant to talk about-
thanksss
ps: Does anyone know where this can be found?
Whoever writes up Heroes as a great show is probably getting paid off by Tim Kring to promote this ultra crappy, flaming, steaming pile of network TV crap.
This is easily one of the worst shows ever made. This makes Smallville, or any other sci-fi show, look miles better, even with its declining ratings. I feel this will be it’s final season, or else NBC Uni is just handing out money to Kring. Maybe he has damaging information on the NBC execs in an attempt to keep this mind numbingly bad show on the air.
R, if the numbers are released today, it probably won’t be until ~5pm ET.
NBC destroyed Heroes. They put it againts House (5.0 rating!) and vs DWTS (3.3)…and STILL heroes did 2.4, which is good
@ Jarvis.
I love Smallville.
and I love Heroes.
Both are very good shows. I don’t understand to this day why people are hating on Heroes.
My only thought on the matter is that I guess it’s just too hard to follow for the average viewer’s intelligence.
Hey Jarvis, Tim K. is NOT paying me off and I still watch the show and will till it end…at least I am planning on it.
I am just hoping that Castle stays around for a full season. Though I don’t think it will have a third season. ABC might not take that risk.
It’s a bizarre system where the 18 – 49 year olds determine whether a show is worth keeping on or not irrespective of how many people actually watch it.
House got a demo of 5.1 with 12.9 million audience so it’s a huge hit; Lie to me an audience of 7.8 million but 2.8 demo so it’s in good shape; while Castle had 10 million viewers but only 2.4 demo so it’s in trouble.
I’d be curious to know how the Phillies/Rockies playoff game on TBS did against this network group. Any numbers for baseball?
People are watching “Dancing” out of habit, and I can’t help but wonder where the “stars” are. The judges and dancers are bigger celebrities than the stars at this point.
As a result of the playoffs, I’ve officially abandoned “Heroes”. Finally.
Kate: Are you new? It’s all about advertising revenue. People under the age of 18 aren’t spending their own money and people over the age of 50 either don’t do any discretionary spending or are too old to be relevant to advertisers. 18 to 49 is where the money is.
Jarvis Heroes is still on the air because its still turning a profit for NBC Universal thanks to DVD sales and international licenses. I imagine as long as it continues to make a profit for NBCU it’ll still be on the air somewhere in the US.
And Dario NBC has not destroyed Heroes, the numbers were awful last year when it wasn’t against House. The bad character writing has destroyed Heroes and however you slice it a 2.4 is not a good number for Heroes.
Is Trauma going to be cancled or just become a Friday show??? I really like that show NBC please don’t take it off the air
“I don’t understand to this day why people are hating on Heroes.
My only thought on the matter is that I guess it’s just too hard to follow for the average viewer’s intelligence.”
Or maybe it’s the fact that the show’s quality has just declined.
Lie to me is about 50-50 for a next season.
Fringe will stay
Dollhouse Gone
Brothers gone or moved to sunday
Theres my prediction for FOX
For everyone hoping Accidentally On Purpose gets a full season, it just isn’t gonna happen. CBS has already ordered 13 episodes of Rules of Engagement. They are not gonna wait until summer to air those. They could hypotethically cancel Gary Unmarried and air it on Wednesdays but I don’t see that happening. I think AOP will get an order for 3 more episodes like Worst Week got last year.
Can someone tell me what is going to happen to Trauma??
I guess NBC is “lucky” they bottomed out since there isn’t too much room to go too much lower, or is there? They’re grown too complacent and are pretty much “accepting” these 2ish ratings where other networks would find it completely unacceptable. But I guess Heroes is all they got since they got nothing on the bench, so they’re forced to keep trotting it out there, kinda like how the Oakland Raiders are forced to keep trotting out JeMarcus Russell since they’re paying him.
You know, a 2.4 in this new horrible NBC makes Heroes one of its heavy hitters. If all the other shows continue to tank, and Chuck can come back at least at a 2.0-2.4 as well, they will both get picked up again next year. After all, NBC has nothing else to trot out to replace them.
Every new show they develop ends up tanking. Yes Trauma, I am looking at you.
“Hey Jarvis, Tim K. is NOT paying me off and I still watch the show and will till it end…at least I am planning on it.”
Hey, Don I hope you do cause if the ratings trend continues to fall, there really won’t be a reason to watch.
And Alex, as much as I understand the scope of profit for NBC to keep Heroes on the air, are we talking about the Season One DVDs or just all the seasons in general?
‘Cause the way I see it so far it’s not justifying this show being on the air at this point in time. At least, a 2.4 is not a good indicator. If the 2.4 were in terms of cable ratings, that’s a different story.
Castle has more than 4 million more viewers than Heroes. It’s unfortunate that ratings aren’t determined by total viewers and just by the age group of 18-49 year olds – especially since our population is aging.
I am not exaggerating when I say this is the worst season I have ever seen. I am not one to say the sky is falling but I typically have appointment shows ever night and this year it boils to one night. I love Mondays because it has HIMYM, BBT and 2.5 Men and I watch Castle because I am sick of CSI Miami. I have nothing to watch on Tuesdays and dont have anything to watch the rest of the week except maybe Cougar and the Community. My only other favorite night is Sundays and friday’s because I love Dexter, Psych and Monk. I am depending more now from USA and Showtime than from the Big 3 networks which I think is very sad. I am waiting for Chuck which will probably be canceled since its on NBC and waiting for the final season ofLost and Scrubs which will probably be canceled too. Most of the shows I watched last year was canceled like Eli Stone and while I like Jay Leno, his takeover 10pm has screwed over the network
Jarvis, I think Alex is referring to all the sales of DVDs for all seasons. If you add the numbers, Heroes has sold a huge amount over all 3 seasons, season 1 being one of the all time best sellers. Last I looked as of 10/4 Heroes season 3 has sold 560,270 for $20,896,814. That’s not including blu-ray, which would add about another 141,000 units and 7,755,000 to the tally (Heroes has about a 25% blue ray selling rate for season 3). These are all just US sales numbers, and Heroes sells very well internationally. You can see why NBC, and more importantly Universal, is not in a hurry to can Heroes.
Got the latest US sales numbers from:
http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/weekly/thisweek.php
Alex:
I’ve seen ABC’s midseason shows and I don’t see depth, I see filler.
reality shows – Wife Swap, True Beauty
returning shows – Better Off Ted, Scrubs (or “AfterScrubs” or whatever they end up calling it)
the big gun – Lost
new renew/cancel fodder – Happy Town & The Deep End
Except for Lost, this isn’t a strong replacement schedule at all.
Kate, Carol, the 18-49 numbers are what pay the bills. Generally, older people will watch anything (The Weather Channel).
Look at it the other way around. Castle was not watched by 290 million people in the U.S.
Some bad info posted above!
1.) there are only 292 million people aged 2+ in the TV homes that Nielsen measures. the ~300 million population estimates don’t matter in these discussions! So only ~282 million people who count didn’t watch Castle!
2.) though advertisers covet younger adults for many reasons, the reason it is an industry obsession when it comes to ratings is because a lot fewer people 18-49 (and fewer 18-34 still) watch TV than people 50+. Because they are harder to reach, they are more desirable. If all ages watched the same amount of TV, advertisers would still care about the demos, but they wouldn’t be such a big focus when talking about ratings.
It amazes me Heroes is one of NBC’s best performing shows…and it’s getting destroyed in the demo by the absolutely horrific Accidentally on Purpose.
I’m pretty sure everyone has just eliminated NBC from their viewing habits at this point, with the exception of Sunday Night football and the Office.
So is this Jay Leno thing working or not? Because a 1.5 demo and less than 5 million people watching NBC screams BAD IDEA to me.
Why would advertisers deal with Leno when they can get practically the same audience with Conan or Letterman??
Sorry, robert, what is the bad info? I was talking in general terms. It’s a 3% difference.
If 18-49 doesn’t pay the bills for big-budget prime-time fare, what does?
“the reason it is an industry obsession when it comes to ratings is because a lot fewer people 18-49 (and fewer 18-34 still) watch TV than people 50+. Because they are harder to reach, they are more desirable”
Obviously I’m not going to change minds of TV execs and industry professionals, etc, but this is retarded.
If 10 million people watch your show… wouldn’t you just start running advertisements that cater to those 10 million viewers? That’s a pretty sizable television viewing audience for a single hour.
Maybe you’re not reaching the ‘harder to reach’ folks, but you’re reaching a VERY LARGE amount of people who all have money to spend as well…
I for one Nielsen box family have started watching Big Bang due to the clips I saw during Emmy week and I thought the guy who was nominated as best supporting was giving a pretty good performance in what I managed to sample. Now i find myself watching it regularly. So even though he didn’t win, they got new viewers.
5506,
I could see Syfy airing it, Spike TV or maybe USA. Or G4, since they have the rerun rights to it. But it wouldn’t get half of what it gets on NBC.
J.R. wasn’t singling you out (though there are only 292M people who matter, not 300M!). 18-49 are typically who advertisers are more interested in. 50+ is less attractive, but the reason that it winds up that “50+ viewing doesn’t really matter” isn’t because they’re older, it’s because they are already very easy to reach through TV advertising. That is not true for 18-49s, and its even worse for 18-34.
What happen to the Overnight and Broadcast 25 numbers for mid to late September? I can’t find Overnights for befroe Sept 30 or Brdcst numbers for before October 6!?
Wanted to check out the numbers for season premiere and 2nd episode of House?
Any help on this? Thanks.
I actually like the show Trauma. I would like to see it on a different day though, mondays are blah days
@SPJava: I believe they’re only allowed to keep data going back 2 weeks at a time now. Blame Nielsen for lacking vision.
Jason is correct, table of Nielsen data older than 2 weeks are gracefully retired at their request.
I was wondering how Lie to me is doing? I am not sure if the ratings are good and if there is a chance for this to be removed.
Tina, Lie to Me could definitely be doing better, but it’s not doing horribly. If it doesn’t pick up, it’ll probably be a bubble show for a third season. But it probably won’t be pulled early.
Jarvis as suggested by Max I did mean all three seasons of Heroes.
Its worth noting that despite falling ratings and sales season three still made a profit for NBC Universal although it easily made a loss for NBC. The question becomes whether bosses at NBCU are happy to make the loss on the slot on NBC itself if it means the profits keep coming in at a steady rate for the parent company. Interestingly enough Heroes is a smaller version of The CW paradox – The CW is losing money but its parent companies seem to be making money from it or at least one of them is.
The DVD sales also don’t take into account the money coming in from international license fees, which is a lot. I think those license fees might take a hit when they come round for renewal because the shows popularity has faded in international markets as well but they’ll still be fairly impressive I’d bet. Its possible that Universal might sacrifice some of the profits from Heroes to make it profitable or at least less of a black hole for NBC with a slightly lower domestic license fee, something they’d have to do anyway if they wanted to move it to one of their cable nets.
Bruce on the subject of ABC’s mid season depth here’s what I remember from the top of my head
The Deep End
Happy Town
V
Lost
The Bachelor
Supernanny
Wife Swap
Scrubs
Better of Ted
Plus I think I remember reading stories of a True Beauty renewal.
Right off the bat they’ve got three new dramas to move into the slots currently occupied by Castle, Eastwick and the forgotten, which is why I’m fairly sure all three of those will be gone by mid season. I suspect The Middle will likely be pulled from the schedule as well, which will allow them to make a Scrubs/Ted/Modern Family/Cougar Town comedy block on Tuesday nights, to make way for a Lost/FlashForward pairing of some kind on Wednesday.
The shows may not be very good but ABC easily has the depth of shows to axe all three struggling 10PM shows come mid season and still struggle to find space for everything on the schedule.
Alex, they also have an hour long Copper and a sitcom that I don’t recall the name of.

Heroes:a bit better than last week. Which I suppose at this moment has to do as a good thing. The fans that didn’t yet leave, are official hooked (or at least still intrigued/curious), and still aren’t leaving.
Personally I think the show is really getting good the last few weeks. Next week looks great too.
BBT is definitely a huge hit i can c it moving to 9pm but where will 2.5 go cbs has no vacant spots. cbs needs a schedule change for next yr especially thursday
Joe unless CBS changes their schedule pattern with Rules of Engagement they’ll have a slot for at least one new sitcom, with those numbers there’s no way Accidentally on Purpose gets renewed. Other slots might come if they play out with the second comedy block on Wednesday, which they should. I still think The Mentalist will move to 9PM on Thursday next year and if/when it gets the post-Super Bowl slot I’ll be completely sold on that. And I’d be surprised if The Good Wife and Cold Case picked up another season and Three Rivers is dead as well, which leaves them with the same kind of space to play with as last year. Maybe an extra hour if they can Numb3rs as well.
Ok, let’s face it and realize that Heroes will probably never get back to the 12-17 million viewers that it had during season 1. However, NO DRAMA ON NBC will get to that mark on Monday nights and probably any night for that matter. It’s just not possible with the other networks. Heroes has been very solid this season and I expect it to pick up a little bit of steam as we move along. Mass media is starting to back off and are only using it as a minor whipping post compared to the typical onslaught of negativity it’s received since the writer’s strike. I hope it gets back into the 7 million range by the end of the season but that’s a major expectation of a show already 5 episodes into the current volume. It’s a damn good show and I really enjoy what they’re doing this season. In fact I’ve really enjoyed what they’ve done in all the seasons but this one just feels “right.” If you have given up on Heroes before this season started, go back and give it a viewing. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well constructed the stories and characters have been put together. It’s a great serialized drama that is evolving into what I think a lot of people expected after Season 1. I think if I mention that I really liked S2 and S3 that my thoughts will be discredited but it’s the truth. Do I think it was appealing to hard-core fans? Yes I do but I think they’ve found an excellent balance this season to bring it all together.
Bottom Line: Give Heroes a shot. Not only has this been a great season so far but looking forward it is going to get even better. The next episode looks AMAZING. It’s a great show. NBC has failed all around and I think the viewership would be %33 higher on ABC. One more thing; the notion that Heroes brought Jay Leno down is a completely ridiculous discussion that E Online had presented and it’s proving itself by falling further and further in the ratings. I said 1 more thing but I meant 2. Neilsen needs to CHANGE. I’m beating a dead horse here but it’s completely skewed in today’s TV realm.
Ouch…looks like that shameless ratings ploy didn’t work out so well for Heroes. But it’ll stick around.
Supposedly, Chuck will be put on when Trauma gets pulled. Whenever that may be. Which I think will be soon.
When tim was using those nyc artists work , Heroes was 14 million viewers and number one.
Now? 2 million viewers or less if NBC fudges the numbers.
Lesson? always hire the originals creators to write for your show, not a talentless hack like tim kring.
LOL!! Those nyc artists and their lawsuit against NBC wrecked Heroes.
Please…… please……. give Heroes a shot. Boo hoo… please…… please…. Oh God please give Heroes a shot…………. please……….
O.K.,
I’ll give Heroes a shot.
BANG!!!!
how’s that for a shot?
Did the final numbers ever come out? I was wondering what Castle ended up with??
2.3, Lee. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/10/13/monday-final-ratings-castle-ticks-down-himym-2-5-men-bbt-tick-up/30374
Last nights episode of Heroes was the best of the season, so far. I actually like Accidentally on Purpose and would hate to see it go. I’m hoping Castle gets a full season pick up.
Where are all the Fringe haters that keep saying it benefited from House lead in, which it did.
But nobody really bashes Lie To Me’s retention rate, 2.8 when house got 5, is just ok.
Looks like fall filler show to me.
Fringe was getting high 3’s low 4’s airing behind HOUSE and keeping a higher percentage of HOUSE’s ratings.
house was a little mediocre last night…quality wise
i love the show but they need to pick it up a little
Fringe was also airing on Tuesday at 9 which has very different competition than Monday at 9. Lie to Me is not doing great, and it wasn’t doing great last season either, but comparing it to Fringe last year is apples to oranges.
Julia, thank you. Not sure how I missed that.
So the heading is that Castle still dropped but failed to mention that it’s up from from previous weeks. I understand a 2.3 isn’t knocking doors down but at least it moved up a little instead of staying steady.
Alex, I thank you for the answer to my question. Although I still feel this will be the last season of Heroes, I should not be surprised if NBC picks this up for next season.
Do you people have jobs?
Julia, the other ABC midseason show is Romantically Challenged starring Alyssa Milano
As for ABC Midseason shows, I actually think both Happy Town and The Deep End are promising but well given the performance of ABC midseason shows the past years they don’t really perform well, some will have second season then that’s it. Grey’s Anatomy was the last midseason hit ABC had. But I’m hoping next year they will be lucky to find a hit as well as the ratings for their recently picked up freshman show to go up or stable just to reward ABC for risking developing several new shows again.
On a side note, how I wish my canceled favorites last year: Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money and Samantha Who performed well so that ABC won’t have so much “holes” in their programming
The preview I saw of Happy Town actually looked really bad. But The Deep End is my most anticipated show of the whole season. But, it’s ABC. It would take a miracle for it to actually be a hit, especially at 10.
JJ, I’ve seen no such Heroes to USA news. Can you provide a link?
I’m comparing rention rate out of House.
LTM 2.8 is 56% of House’s 5 demo.
Basically at there average, but it’s also got a cushy spot.
We’ve seen shows with average ratings get cancelled/moved behind top shows.
11 Hour, Worst Week, Christine.
HEROES IS IN TOP NOTCH CONDITION FOR SEASON 4, too bad the numbers don’t show it. I love this show, Its been amazing this season!!! Please keep it up heroes.
Saying HEROES has “stabilized” is like saying the medical condition of a corpse on the slab at the morgue has “stabilized at death”.
Hopefully they end HEROES this season. Its barely watchable and half the time I fast forward thru it. HOUSE is 100 times better, so watching HEROES live is pointless.
TSCC had better demo than heroes or fringe or lie to me! [ when it was on mon nites]
I do hope castle and lie to me get full seasons. think they will.
Neilsen needs to CHANGE. I’m beating a dead horse here but it’s completely skewed in today’s TV realm.
Best statement on here!
Haters might say whatever the hell they want. Heroes has been GREAT since after last season’s holiday break (Volume 4), but people are just not willing to give it another chance and the ratings are terrible. I’ve basically made my peace with the possibility that this might be the last season, and if it is at least it’s turning out to be a damn good one. Maybe ratings-wise it’s in a low point, but quality-wise this season has nothing to envy even season 1 so far.
Typical case of quality not being reflected in the ratings, but make no mistake, this is one hell of a great season so far, definitely going back to what made season 1 so good.
Oth needs to pick up the ratings somewhat. I am such a big fan of the show and have been watching it since season 2. Since they did not bring back chad michael murray and hilarie burton ( two of their tope stars/ main characters) that is one thing that is definetely hurting the show. Many loyal oth viewers are pissed that lucas and peyton are gone…. but I still like the show myself but hope it has what it takes to hang on for a season 8?????? Only time will tell really if people will keep watching what I feel is a great and underrated show……………………….. More people should consider giving oth a chance
Hey, I can’t believe Castle is going under =’(
I encourage everyone to watch it just to see if you like it and if you do, GREAT help people fight it back. And if you don’t, maybe there really aren’t enough viewers
as crazy as that sounds.
But I know I don’t want people looking back on it after the show was canceled and have to thing, boy, this was something special.
Just try it, it’s great in my opinion and all of the people who I’ve showed it to have fallen in love with it.
Thanks,
Sarah
I really thought with the losses of Chad Michael Murray and Hillary Burton One Tree Hill was finished and limping towards the finish linme especially after the first episode. But full marks as the last two episodes have been of very high quality. Now if the CW pumped the show as if it was Gossip Girl then we might see them break 3mil with ease every week.
BTW HAS FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS STARTED ON DIRECT TV YET?
Castle on Monday was great.. The show is rlly turning into something i watch live now instead of CSI:Miami (still dvr csi of course). and about AOP.. i think its a decent show but its no where as funny or good as ROE.. ROE i felt had a better script than TBBT and TAHM most of last season.. Can’t wait for it to return and hope to hear some good news about a Castle pick up soon.. it got 10 mil viewss.. that has to mean something
