Vic Mizzy, the songwriter who wrote the catchy theme songs to “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres” television shows, has died. He was 93.
If you had asked me who wrote the theme songs to “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres” before tonight, I wouldn’t have remembered. I probably haven’t seen either show for at least 25 years. But if you asked me for the lyrics to either theme, I could rattle them off. I imagine that’s true for almost everyone who is between 40-60.
What an incredible mark to leave on a generation.
Those were two great theme songs. “The Addams Family” only aired for a couple of seasons, and I wasn’t old enough to appreciate it when it originally ran. But sooner or later pretty much every show made from the late 1950s through the 1960s that had more than 50 episodes wound up in heavy rotation in syndication. Those theme songs ultimately made an impression on a huge percentage of the population.
You can read a brief biography on Mizzy, including how he wound up recording the vocals to “The Addams Family” himself because Filmways “opted not to pay for singers.“

R.I.P
I’m Italian but I remember well the Addams Family theme!
That is his voice in the Addams Family theme.

Weird, I was humming the Green Acres theme out of nowhere a couple of days ago!
I love both theme songs. His legacy will always live in through both shows.
The theme for Green Acres was infectious and with the titles it did the job perfectly of setting up situation. You knew exactly what the show was about.
I know both and I’m no where near 40-60.
Thank you Nick-At-Nite before it sucked!
@ Julia
I totally agree with you! I’m 26 and I loved watching those old shows with my grandparents (r.i.p.) What happened to Nick-At-Nite?
