Exclusive (for crazy fans): Smallville and Supernatural ALREADY HAVE full season pick-ups

Posted on 22 October 2009 by Robert Seidman

SUPERNATURAL

Crazed fans* from Brazil and Italy, please stop e-mailing things like “How can Dawn Ostroff be so disrespectful to Supernatural and  SmallvilleMelrose Place gets five more episodes but no news on Supernatural or Smallville!? It’s a disgrace!!”

So look, I’m a huge, huge Supernatural fan.  But some* of you people need to chill out over the Dawn Ostroff bashing.  She nor the CW have disrespected Smallville and Supernatural here,  those shows already had full season orders when they were renewed last spring.  So you’re getting 22 episodes.  You’ve had them all along.  There was no disrespect.  Relax!

*We love fans from Brazil and Italy and I am by no means suggesting that all of you are crazy.  It just so happened that all the e-mail I got along the lines described above was from outside the United States.

  1. the goth rage says:

hey, you can’t blame them. when we don’t know what dawn ostroff might do to the shows.

  2. Jesse says:

The move of Smallville to Friday was pretty disrespectful :p Smallville ratings were almost the same as VDs are at that time. But I’m just as happy with it on Fridays as my DVR is busy with Bones and the new addition of FlashForward.

  3. Jodie says:

Since when are you a “huge, huge Supernatural fan” Robert… or do I need to be taking a demon repelling pinch of salt with that statement? ;)

  4. Jodie, you can throw salt on me, there’s no demons to chase out. I am a fan of Supernatural. It’s probably one of my top 10 favorite scripted hour long dramas. I like it more than Chuck and Dollhouse. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone!

  5. Smallville says:

Jesse, I think it was a good move (not the best) because with Smallville on fridays even if it gets low ratings theres still a really good chance of renewal robert and bill wrote it down for what f means in the shows list
    F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays have been renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes

Robert, so then whats ur top 10 scripted shows? =)

    mine are
    Smallville
    Supernatural
    Castle
    Legend of the Seeker
    Desperate Housewives
    Flash Forward
    Vampire Diaries
    NCIS: LA
    Trauma
    Cougar Town

  6. Jodie says:

Robert: I am shocked, shocked I tells ya! Even more shocked than I was at the whole Lillth turning out to be the last seal thing :D

Now that you are out of the closet I hope there will be a few more Supernatural stories… I know it’s not on the bubble or anthing but I want to know about this sixth season speculation… (I don’t want a sixth season Kripke’s plan should stay)… oh I’m a huge fan too I started watching a few months ago but love it just as much as Chuck ;)

  7. DW says:

I love Supernatural, but would also like to see it conclude this year once Kripke’s “five year plan” is completed. I’m worried the CW is going to stretch it out until it becomes a laughing stock, a la Smallville and OTH.

  8. Mel says:

Yaay Robert! I knew you were a fan! I started coming to the site when you guys were putting up comparisons between Reaper ans Supernatural.

I am in favor of a season six. To everybody talking about Kripke’s plan — when pitching the show to WB, he had to have AT LEAST a five year plan in order to get to syndication. He didn’t always have ONLY a five year plan.

In October 2006 (season 2) after the move to CW in TV Guide EK said when asked about ratings:
“All things considered, we’re doing well. For the show to be the six-/seven-year player that I want it to be, we need to do better.”

According to the renew/cancel index in 2009 — I think he might get his initial longevity wish! :D

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Mel, and others, unless something surprises big in the second half of the year from the CW, it looks like this year is shaping up a lot like last year (minus the Sunday night debacle). We had Stylista, an obvious loser (although it finished its run), and Privileged, which hung around for 18 episodes before disappearing. This year we had The Beautiful Life yanked early, and Melrose Place settling into the Privileged role.

Every one of the other CW shows has the ratings to come back next season currently. Of course, producers or actors may have other ideas, but I don’t think Dawn will be a position to eliminate either of them no matter how much crazy fans think she “hates” them.

  10. Jodie says:

Mel: Kripke is leaving this year, he is not contracted for a sixth season… neither are Ackles or Padalecki as far as I know nor Collins I assume.

  11. lainey says:

I don’t know “beans” about Supernatural, but I am happy for all the fans. I was just wondering, surely they wouldn’t have renewed it if they can’t count on the main actors, at least? Perhaps they have agreed to come back but its not public yet, and the show will end its run next year. I know that fans frown upon that, also, but-speaking as a fan of other things-I think I would rather see a show get to come to the ending that a creator, and perhaps a cast, prefers than to either have to come to a quick conclusion, that is usually not satisfying, or have no conclusion at all, if the show is cancelled.

  12. Jared says:

Does anyone have any news on 90210?…Did it already get a full season pickup??…

  13. Dan says:

Its not like either 1 would finish after 13 anyway. While Smallville could end in May it wouldnt just get replaced after 13, The CW wouldnt due that. Except when they had to axe Girlfriends due to the strike.

  14. Max Jennings says:

I like Supernatural fine, but better than Chuck? Never! While Supernatural is a well put together show, it had nothing on Chuck.

  15. Shannon says:

You mean people actually didn’t know SPN had a full season already? LMAO they don’t read many interviews by Eric then… He had already stated they have 22 episodes to play with and finalize this season out.

Jodie, to answer your question, Eric’s contract is up this season, but both Jared and Jensen had said in various interviews that they were contracted through a 6th season (should it happen) so if SPN does get a 6th season, it might or might not be with Eric behind the helm…

Now as far as a 6th season is concerned, I would love 13 episodes extra just to make up for the strike that happened during season 3.

Oh yeah Castiel is not useless, people just don’t like him because they think he is replacing Sam *eyeroll*

  16. Smallville says:

I like Cas to he his funny because he is an angel and he is getting to experince what its like as a human and i loved episode 3 with him and that girl i was cracking up misha is great. As for Smallville people
NOTICE: AS OF NOW IT COULD CHANGE BUT I DOUBT IT NEXT WEEK’S EPISODE OD SMALLVILLE CROSSFIRE WILL BE 7PM ON SUNDAY BECAUSE A NBA GAME IS REPLACING IT FOR FRIDAY SO WATCH IT SUNDAY AT 7! SAME CHANNEL! NOT TOMORROWS EPISODE THE ONE AFTER

  17. Mel says:

Jodie — both Ackles and Padalecki have said that they are contracted through season 6. I don’t know about Collins – but I would imagine that since he is a regular, there would be some sort of option on his contract to continue. What I can’t imagine is EK walking away from his baby. But I suppose anything is possible.

  18. Dorothy says:

Yay, Sam and Dean! That’s the prettiest photo you’ve ever posted! It needs more Impala, though.

  19. DefConDre says:

Supernatural isn’t quite as good this year as in the past, but it still smoke just about every other show out there. I know that Eric Kripke says that he has/had no plans to go beyond this season & the stars aren’t contracted any further than this year, but I still hope it goes a little longer. I must say that it feels like it’s going to be wrapped up this year. As far as “Smallville” goes it is really bad this year. In fact it should have been cancelled after season 6. We are in the middle of season 9 now & it is bad. It has a lot to do w/the fact the two guys that developed the show are gone & I can’t say I blame them. Anybody have any news about “Supernatural” beyond this year? Curious to know. Cheers & I used to visit FutonCritic.com but I must say this site is the best TV I’ve found yet. Keep up the great articles & TV ratings & general news!

  20. Nietzsce says:

AWESOME Show! This show reminds me of the X-Files. I know she was a “Witch”, but I want Ruby to come back.

  21. aznfratboy says:

Sweet, Supernatural will finish it’s run in style!

  22. Tks says:

I like Castiel a lot actually I think he’s a nice addition. And, I still enjoy Smallville completely I think they have held up story wise well. Will look forward to season 10.

  23. jamie says:

Yes well weres the adverstising. We the fans and the team of SN got the full season episodes…DO just had to comply. But no adverstising even less than usual. She has the two best looking men on t.v. it just dosn’t make good business sense to actually adverstise your brand ‘THE CW’ and a spectacular show with these two does it??????

Plus really ‘Castiel’ was this her idea…I feel this was one of her ideas. Kill him off already.

  24. Anna says:

that’s a good news!!!! i didn t know about the full season pick up, good for them! but i still hate the blond bit*c Dawn! she destroyed the show year after year, cutting the budget and not promoting it. anyway, im an italian fan.. Here we love SN over any other show!!

  25. Cane says:

This is the best show on t.v. It really should have more respect. If people actually think DO has respected SN then they need to have another look. Goes up against the biggest of the biggest shows on Thursday night..has consistant ratings, gathered a fan base that adore the boys and this show. The CW hasn’t done right by this show at all. I agree the fans have got this show the 5 seasons.

Oh and yes..another one here who hopes that Castiel is gone next season. He’s not Supernatural never has been and never will be. The only three that need to be available next season are Jensen, Jared and EK.

  26. Col. McQueen says:

Good for Supernatural although I am not sure what they are going to do after the apocalypse.

Smallville has been showing repeats for years now, bummer.

  27. Word! says:

Supernatural is a great show. I’m not surprised that it’s been picked up already. It’s two leads are fantastic and EK really developed a fantastic story between them and the supernatural beings that they’ve spent the past several years chasing after.

And I’m with you all on the Castiel thing. He was interesting last season at best, but this consistent process of bringing him in as the random comic relief/irrelevant person to state things that the boys ALREADY KNOW is tiring to watch. I was beyond fascinated by his character last year, but this season I groan every time he comes along on screen. I’d seriously be much happier if Cas was used when he was NEEDED and not when he’s just stepping in to look pretty at everyone. This is hardly me hating on the character, it’s just a preference at seeing him on screen when he’s actually vital to the plot rather than taking time away from more important things that should have been handled (Dean’s reveal about breaking the first seal to Sam, perhaps even Dean talking a bit more in depth about his experiences/recovery from his time in Hell, etc.)

To add onto Cane’s above comment: The only three that need to be available next season are Jensen, Jared and EK. Don’t forget the big man Jim Beaver as Bobby and his epic awesome!

  28. Mell says:

jensen and jared rock it sooooo hard!!!! best duo ever!!!!! As long as it`s the two of them interacting – i will watch them even if the turn SPN into a cooking show …. after all, the awesome writer would even be able to creatively add a special flavor and make that fun…
SPN forever! best brothers, best show!!

  29. silvia says:

Hey, maybe, fans from the States get news about the show more easily and more often than us fans across the oceans…because, in percentage, crazed fans are everywhere.

  30. minia says:

I find it a little hard to believe that italian fans would be so crazy and bothering so much you regarding Supernatural, because sadly here SN is just considered a trashy show that airs late at night, and practically no one knows about it.

  31. Questionable Decisions says:

I dont understand Dawn’s approach to the shows on the CW. Im still trying to figure out how she decided not to renew one of their top rating programs, “WWE Friday Night Smackdown”. Now that the show is on My Network TV, the ratings are down and the CW were ranking in the top three when on the network.

  32. Jodie says:

Mel, Shannon: Thanks for that I wasn’t aware of that.

I do think it would be odd for Supernatural to continue post Kripke, post apocolypse… the shows seems to be building to a conlusion anway.

And what is it with all this Castiel hate? If you don’t like Cas, don’t watch the show cos he ain’t going anyhwere.

  33. Jen says:

I love Supernatural and it is much better than Chuck and Dollhouse.

And to the disturbed fangirl who wants to kill Castiel, sorry but Cas is awesome! Which nutjob Samgirl came up with the theory that he’s the idea of Dawn O? LOL. Cas rocks. I love him as much as I love Sam and Dean!

  34. Kathy B. says:

Yes, crazy fans are everywhere. And I’m sure things get lost in translation. Maybe fans are looking for news of an early season six pickup. I for one would love to see a season six. Supernatural employs some of the best writers around and I’m sure they could find a way to make post apocolypse just as interesting.

  35. Jodie says:

    Jen: your comment
“And to the disturbed fangirl who wants to kill Castiel, sorry but Cas is awesome! Which nutjob Samgirl came up with the theory that he’s the idea of Dawn O? LOL. Cas rocks. I love him as much as I love Sam and Dean!”
made me laugh so much I nearly fell out of my chair! Too true.

  36. Syl says:

I’m italian,I’m a huge Spn fan and I’m feeling quite offended!I’m in the fandom and I can assure you that I’ve met 5 (top) big italian fans of the show,I don’t know about Brasil but here in Italy unfortunately Supernatural is not as famous as in America so it’s very hard to believe all these mails are coming from my country!
In any case, calling out only people outside the United States was desrespectful, and if geography doesn’t lie “outside the USA” there are a lot of countries!Fans are all the same, and if “being a crazy fan” means being a big supporter of the show…well,we are all crazy!I bet most of the shows around would love a fandom like the Spn one!

  37. Robin Vogel says:

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki ARE signed for a sixth season of SUPERNATURAL, but most feel that if Eric Kripke doesn’t want to continue the series, it would be better to end with the fifth season. After all, the brothers are up against Lucifer; where do you go after you’ve come face to face with the biggest of the Big Bad? Unless they don’t end the fight with the fifth season and keep it going another year. I just hope they can keep up the quality of the scripts that long! Kripke always said he had five seasons of SUPERNATURAL in his mind, and preferred to go out on top. I think we fans agree that it would be better to do that than see the show become tired and continue beyond its freshness date! Love, Robin, Editor of SUPERNATURAL at moogi.com

  38. galveston says:

…Of course her buddy Kripke helped her and now the show is officially dead with that awful useless worst character ever castiel…..

You’re confused. It’s okay. You meant the fascinating addition of Castiel, a character who allows Dean to have a deep connection to someone outside of the Winchester family (Sam, Bobby). Castiel who deepens the character development of Supernatural by creating other rich characters besides Sam and Dean. Castiel who is NOT replacing Sam. Castiel as played by the extremely talented Misha Collins. That’s what you meant.

  39. Kathy B. says:

Castiel & Chuck were both great additions to the show.

  40. Angela says:

lol. this made me laugh out loud.ehehehe.

As a Smallville fan, I can testify that some of the show’s fans are crazy.lol

  41. Chad says:

I just was reading this from Spoilerfix – Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is sticking by his word that his CW thriller will bow out next May after five seasons. Sort of. “I did set out to tell a five-season storyline,” the exec maintains. “Quite frankly, I never expected the show to make it to five years. But now that we’re in our fifth year, I have every intention of ending the story with a bang and not drawing it out or watering it down.” Relax, Supe Nazis. Here’s that catch I promised you. “That having been said,” Kripke continues, “I’m looking at this season as the last chapter in this particular story. That doesn’t mean there can’t be a new story. Buffy did it. The X-Files did it. You close a chapter on a big mythology storyline and then you begin a new one.” “One of the things I like about this show is we don’t draw out mysteries endlessly,” he adds. “We’ll answer a bunch of questions this season and then pose some new ones next season.” Of course, that’s assuming there is a next season. The CW has yet to renew Supernatural for a sixth go-’round. And even if the show does come back, would Kripke still be involved? “I don’t know,” hedges Supe’s fearless leader, who doesn’t have a deal in place beyond season 5. “I’m going to cross that bridge when I get to it.” [...] You’ll be thrilled to hear that Sam and Dean’s inability to maintain meaningful long-term relationships with the opposite sex will continue throughout season 5. “We’ve returned to a conceit that works for us and that the fans seem to be able to swallow without vomiting, which is that there’s a girl in every port,” says series creator Eric Kripke. “We certainly have a lot of guest-star female love interests that the boys help save and interact with. But at the moment, there are no plans for a longstanding romantic relationship.”

  42. Ryan says:

smallville is not a laughing stalk! the past 2-3 season are by far its strongest seasons

  43. JaySin420 says:

I love how everybody has been laughing at Smallville for years and it just NEVER DIES! This might be the best season so far after S1, also most of last season was great other than the Lana disaster.

  44. Drezza says:

    galveston says:

Loved, Loved its words and I agree to everything.:D

  45. SHOCKED says:

TO ROBERT: THANK YOU!!! This made me laugh, although I don’t believe that it is just the Brazil and Italian fans that were sending crazed responses. I have been around the Smallville fandom for a while, and I can attest that there are some really crazy fans and that the Dawn Ostroff bashing has just gotten out of control. There is an actual thread on a Smallville site that is just about DO bashing, that actually includes a poll of how to get rid of her, from fired to stoning. Completely serious. There are even animated pics of DO being hung. I was shocked. This is seriously the most immature fandom I have ever seen and I’m trying to keep away from the message boards because the opinions of some have also become disturbing to me. I feel sorry for you that you were hit by some of these fans. There are normal fans out there, but the crazy ones have taken control, making this fandom unpleasant.

  46. sophie says:

    To DefConDre:
It is your opinion that this season is bad. I consider it the best one yet. I’m glad the creators of the show left, Al Gough and Miles Millar did good things, but they are responsible for the Lana and Clark’s angsty relationship, an insecure and brooding Clark who can’t take decisions by himself, some actors were not happy with their storylines, and they wanted to develop the show according to the Superman movies which are not so great storyline-wise IMO and they didn’t know much of the Comics, the main source for the mythology. Season 7 depicted all major defaults of the show: bad characterization, Clark playing house at the farm, retcons, important characters sidelined….
The producers who took over in season 8 did a great job in the first half of the season but there was no consistency in the second half. But it was due to happen when 4 out of 6 characters appear only in 12/13 episodes…This year Tom Welling is officially a producer, all actors are in at least 16 episodes, the characterization of every character (notably Clark who is not brooding and whiney anymore) as well as storylines are better, a lot of interesting DC characters appear in every episode, and the music is great and it’s beautifully shot …There is really a Superman/Comics feeling in the episodes now and it’s refreshing. It would be great if people stopped bashing a show just because it’s old. It’s not because it’s old that it can’t do better than previous seasons.

Most people already knew that SPN and SV had been given a full season. People bashing Dawn Ostroff are doing so because the shows that perform great despite being in their 5th or 9th season get sidelined and are disrespected because they don’t bring in high ratings in the W18-34 demo. It’s no secret she doesn’t like any of those two shows. Giving them a full season is not showing respect, she has no other choice because the CW’s survival depends on these shows. If 90210 or Melrose Place for example were successful, she could afford to cancel SPN and SV, but she can’t.Anyway I believe she’s not the only one to decide about a renewal, as shows originating from the WB and bringing a lot of money from DVD sales I think the Warner Bros. has also a say in the matter.

  47. aboleyn24 says:

Happy to admit to being a Whedon girl so Dollhouse is a gimme. Love Chuck. Its an amazing show, but its my second favorite show on the air because nothing beats Supernatural. Hands down favorite show. I loved the addition of Cas. I can’t imagine anyone not loving him. I am scared to death though of the Supernatural fan community. Those are some scsry folks. I am neither a Dean or Sam fangirl, heaven forbid a woman gets cast on the show, they are out for blood. I made the mistake of venturing into a few forums and holy moly its not a safe place to go. So while Supernatural is my favorite show, I tread lighly around the fans.
