TV Ratings: Modern Family down, SVU hits highs, Eastwick beats The Jay Leno Show

Note all comparisons below are against last week’s preliminary (not final) numbers.

FOX and CBS tied with adults 18-49, FOX won with adults 18-34 by a wide margin and CBS won with overall viewers by a wide margin.   All comedies were off from last week both on ABC and CBS, with Modern Family down a few ticks.  You might have thought Hank could fall no further than last week’s 1.6 rating with adults 18-49, but last night Hank managed a 1.5.

Criminal Minds was the night’s most-watched show both with adults 18-49 and overall.   So You Think You Can Dance was down a couple of ticks from last week’s 2.8 to a 2.6 and Glee went from a 3.3 to a 3.2.

NBC’s Mercy was stable with a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating and Bill Gorman favorite Law & Order: SVU went up a couple of  ticks from last week’s 2.7 to a 2.9 – a season high.

Eastwick beat Leno this week, but take no comfort in that Eastwick fans.   Eastwick didn’t go up, Leno went down.  And a scripted hour long drama pulling a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating isn’t going to stick around at ABC.

America’s Next Top Model was up week to week by 13% in women 18-34 (2.6/8), 21% in adults 18-34 (1.7/6) and 4% in viewers (3.13mil) and ranked second in the hour in women 18-34 and adults 18-34, behind only Fox.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Wednesday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.9/4 in 18-49 in local people meters, encore) defeated CBS’s LATE SHOW (0.8/4, encore) in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with People Meters.  Conan also topped LATE SHOW in adults 18-34 (0.6/3 vs. 0.3/2).
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.5/3 in 18-49 in local people meters, encore) tied CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.5/3, encore).  Jimmy beat Ferguson in 18-34 (0.4/2 vs. 0.2/2).

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. forg says:

Too bad Modern Family but still a good demo number and it’s still #2 behind Criminal Minds so not really bad. But SVU is catching up, looks like its 10pm viewers is slowly going back.

The Middle’s numbers is bad. Cougar Town is OK. Christine and Gary are stable with their numbers

Here’s some Canadian ratings from TUESDAY in case anyone is interested:

So You Think You Can Dance Canada – 1,252,000
    Being Erica – 587,000.
    NCIS – 2,121,000
    NCIS: Los Angeles – 1,873,000,
    Law & Order: SVU – 1,424,000
    The Good Wife – 1,408,000
Dancing with the Stars results show – 882,000
    Biggest Loser – 686,000

  3. johnthemon says:

Mercy hit a 2 again. It might just last the season. maybe.

It’s clear L&O SVU’s audience is finding it again. Wednesday is increasingly acceptable for NBC.

Too bad Glee is down again. I like that show a lot. Modern Family will bounce back, I think.

  4. Ed says:

Nice to see Law & Order SVU above 9 M viewers.

The Middle is doing pretty well considering its lead-in.

  5. Victor Hugo says:

At least “The Middle” stay above 2.0.
Next Week the middle will be a strong lead in and i hope the series will increase 18 -49 rating

  6. Anon, just curious were there any shows NOT from the US that perform higher? Or does NCIS own Canada, too?

  7. Chuck Tranberg says:

There was a question the other day which goes first? Trauma or Mercy. Mercy will survive longer, imo. Once again it is pretty stable coming in second in its time slot in overall viewers and with a 2.0 18-49 demo which is only a notch lower than “Christine” with a 2.0.

That was very good news on SVU as viewers rediscover it in its new time slot. 9.27 million viewers at a 2.9 demo is pretty good for an NBC show these days.

Leno is did beat Eastwick in overall viewers but not by the demo. Still he got his 1.5 rating which is what they promised advertisers.

Overall, I think NBC is doing fair on Wednesday nights. It’s possible that SVU can keep growing. I think that Mercy is doing well enough to keep it until the end of the season, at the latest.

  8. Ryan says:

People need to start watching Eastwick, the show is sooo good.

  9. GEORGE 11 says:

wow antm almost beat hank!!!im so glad that eastwick beat leno but its not that it went up vs last week!actually leno just go down!!
    is 2.9 good fro svu??

  10. Julia says:

Hopefully Modern Family stays within the 3.3-3.6 range through sweeps, at least.

SVU is almost looking respectable again! I wonder if it can climb over 3.0?

  11. Gob says:

It seems that The Middle stayed at the 2.0 from last week despite Hank dropping a bit. I wonder what the show could do with a stronger lead in. The animated specials ABC is going to air will probably help, but I think it would be interesting to see what a repeat of Modern Family would do there.

  12. Kenny says:

ABC is done on wednesdays they threw out the towel it’s obviously they still let Hank with those numbers, bad for the other shows that are affected for that but no way

  13. forg says:

How I wish The Middle would perform better though. I hope it will get a boost with Pumpkin special.

Hank is really well dead so as Eastwick but at least they beat Leno for what is worth.

    Glee’s numbers are stable.

I hope the ABC sitcoms numbers will rise in the finals

  14. Neal says:

But Leno got more viewers than Eastwick so Leno beat Eastwick!

  15. johnthemon says:

If ABC ordered a full season of the Middle with a 2.0, NBC is probably at least considering keeping Mercy for the season.

  16. Diane says:

Modern Family is great, but my family is really starting to enjoy The Middle. The actress who plays the daughter is just wonderful. Too bad the numbers aren’t better.

  17. dave says:

“The animated specials ABC is going to air will probably help, but I think it would be interesting to see what a repeat of Modern Family would do there.”

I don’t know what it is about ABC, but their shows tend to repeat badly.

  18. johnthemon says:

@George11, this season it is good for SVU. Last season it managed midrange 3’s, but it started off this season with like a 2.5. So it’s growing, but it lost a lot of viewers when they changed its time-slot.

  19. Gabe says:

    OMG
CSI:NY won by a HUGE margin over those two weaklings.
and would you look at those numbers for the CBS comedy block – they are #2 in the hour, that must please CBS a little
sure they could do so much much much better with basically anything, but why bother with WED 8 when the whole SUN lineup is a chaos…

  20. forg says:

I could see SVU climbing to 3.0 over time, it is really doing well now after a bad start.

Oh Hank barely beat ANTM? Really bad. Poor Kelsey, I love Frasier so sad seeing him flop like this.

CSI NY although the runaway winner of the timeslot is down sharply from last season

  21. Anonymous says:

    @ Robert

When it comes to Tuesdays, there is ONE Canadian show that performs quite well – called the “Rick Mercer Report” on the CBC (it got 1,097,000 viewers on Tuesday). But all of the other Canadian programming underperforms on Tuesdays.

There are a few other Canadian shows that do really well during the week – one is “Dragon’s Den” (Canada’s version of “Shark Tank”), which routinely gets above 1.2 million. And a new program, called “Battle of the Blades” (think “Dancing with the Stars” – on ice) gets above 1 million on a regular basis. There’s also a few Canadian comedies during the week (like “Little Mosque on the Prairie”) which get about 500-600k.

But when you have the likes of “House” getting 3.6 million viewers last Monday (!!)….all those other “Canadian” shows seem to look pretty poor in comparison.

  22. Lee says:

Ouch. Eastwick dropped below 5 million viewers. Seriously, how can ABC be happy with how it’s performing?

The Forgotten looks like it has a better chance of surviving now.

I’m pulling for Mercy. It’s gotten so much better and it’s been holding steady in the ratings. That should be enough for NBC. I hope.

  23. Chuck Tranberg says:

Hank is dead, it will not be renewed. Isn’t ABC pre-empting it next week for Charlie Brown?

  24. Ali says:

Nice to see Glee is sticking to its 3.2-3.4 range.
@Ryan People really HAVE GOT TO watch Eastwick, I agree. It’s like desperate housewives meet Charmed!

  25. Tom says:

It continues to amaze me that so many shows can do various flavors of 3s at 9pm but everything struggles to hit low 2s at 8pm.

Mercy was never going to last the season, it was only going to last until mid-Feb. Of course, lasting until mid-Feb will probably require additional episodes – I’m really surprised NBC hasn’t figured out what they are doing with the Heroes/Trauma/Mercy/L&OOriginal mess yet.

Julia – still thinking the ABC 9pm comedies (to say nothing of 8pm comedies) have a lock on their scheduling come January?

  26. Spike says:

abc is happy because it didn’t put too much marketing behind the show… and the slot is bad… 4/5 milion of viewers is a miracle

  27. Spike says:

    i was talkin about eastwick

  28. Kenny says:

Then if Eastwick is such a gooood show as some people say, how would it work at 8 p.m. beian lead-in of THE MIDDLE, not hank because it’s dead

  29. johnthemon says:

@Lee, no they’re both doomed. When ABC ordered Castle’s back 9 that confirmed it for me. Forgotten and Eastwick are both going to be replaced.

  30. Chuck Tranberg says:

Kenny, Eastwick is an hour long show, so they where would they put “The Middle” so that it could lead into it? They aren’t cancelling either “Modern Family” or “Couger Town.”

  31. Chuckit says:

Seems to me Mercy is pulling in good overall numbers but the demo is low. I think Mercy will be sticking, even Trauma because it looks like it is a 1.9 show and NBC has not pulled the plug yet.

Would love to see Chuck on Wed but Mercy staying, that is not going to happen.

  32. Spike says:

    i don’t think so

  33. Terry says:

I agree mercy is a good show and should get a full season!.Last nite rosie perez guest starred and it was really good!!!I hate it has to go against another fav Glee lol

  34. Michael J says:

I wonder if it’s just coincidence that Jay Leno showed up at Jordon Hinson’s house last week as part of his show or perhaps it was NBC hinting that Hank is dead and it’s time for Jordon to come back to the NBC family.

  35. Dan says:

Mercy is doing OK in the demo, and has the highest overall numbers for 8:00 so I think for NBC standards it will get a full year. I think for NBC anything 7 million and above is considered acceptable. They should be happy with SVU’s highs.

As for ABC, Hank is dead and it should take just a few more airings to confirm it. No word on whether or not it will be pulled for sweeps, but my guess is Hank will likely air for atleast November 4. It shouldnt take to long for ABC to pull the plug on Eastwick, though them calling it a quiet success may tempt the network to just leave it on the schedule to burn off eps (which I hope they will do). The other 3 comedies are doing moderately well.

While still lower than summer, SYTYCD is performing at a respectable level and Glee still rises from Dances’ average so FOX is pleased either way.

CBS is doing pretty good with their 8-9 comedy block and the fact that Gary Unmarried rises from Christine in the hour should keep them staisfied. As always Criminal Minds and CSI NY win their hours and perform above levels.

  36. Spike says:

put eastwick in this slot was an abc mistake! try to make some fresh and good trailer for the show!!! Poster or more sneak peek! Episodes are too much different than the tv promo, trailers and episodes are completely different!!!

  37. Wendy says:

Wednesday 8pm is such a wasteland! Really…a 2.6 wins the hour?? Mercy came in 1st in terms of viewers but 3rd in demo…it seems like a safe bet for now, but what happens when Idol returns in 2010? I’m thinking Mercy will last through it’s 13 episode order, but I’m not sure NBC will give it a full season pick up because it will definitely lose some of it’s audience, and more importantly it’s largely female demo, to American Idol after mid-season.

I’m bummed that Modern Family lost groud…that show is hysterical and last night’s episode had be howling!

  38. johnthemon says:

@Chuck Tranberg, thanks for pointing out the most obvious thing possible. Guess what? The sky is blue.

@Chuckit, are you seriously suggesting that NBC won’t can Trauma? They have a lot of new shows coming in mid-season (Parenthood, Persons Unknown, Celebrity Apprentice, The Marriage Ref, Chuck, 100 Questions) that I don’t know if they’ll even keep Mercy. I hope they do, because I think it has room for growth and that a lot of shows get cancelled pre-maturely.

  39. Tom says:

@Spike – ABC isn’t happy about the show, that’s just PR cover, they simply have nothing else to air there.

That “we’re happy” spiel just means they probably aren’t going to break out the news specials preemptions at Eastwick’s current ratings.

  40. S. says:

Modern Family last week had Shelley Long. Numbers went up. Stunt casting that worked, and brought in new eyes. The problem is that those viewers didn’t stay, and the numbers are even lower than 2 weeks ago. Interesting to see if the show has bottomed this week, or is it still trending down.

Cougartown looks like another Samantha Who? Nice numbers, but totally dependent on the lead-in.

  41. Chuckit says:

Chuck has no day and time right now. What happens to that?

  42. Pete says:

I think you need to eat your words about Dillahunt now, Robert Seidman. :P

  43. Spike says:

@tom “they simply have nothing else to air there” then put eastwick in another slot! is a bad slot for every show!

  44. johnthemon says:

NBC’s really between a rock and a hard place with Mercy.

If they keep it, it might grow and garner respectable ratings, it’s pretty darn close now. However, going against AI it could do a lot worse also. However, if they replace it with Persons Unknown or Parenthood, are those shows likely to do any better?

What I think they should do is put “Day One” on at 8:00 for it’s four week run and then bring Mercy back, or else replace it with Chuck.

  45. Jon says:

The 8pm hour on CBS is still their weakest slot but compare to Sundays, it not as big a deal but I can’t help but wonder if a drama or a reality show would perform better and boost the already strong Criminal Minds and CSI: NY.

Although CSI: NY the least watched of the CSIs, I can’t see CBS cancelling it as it dominates its slot and I imagine it makes money through syndication.

  46. andrew says:

Even if ABC isn’t happy with Eastwick’s performance, there’s always a chance (albeit a slim one) that The CW could pick it up. They’d be stupid not to, should ABC pass, because it’s a female-driven show that would sure make Dawn Ostroff foam at the mouth.

Either way, whatever happens, I like Eastwick and hope for the best.

  47. Dan says:

Julia – SVU just needed adjusting to its new time period. After airing in the same slot for 6 years a new day and earlier time period can change a lot, but depsite 2 critically acclaimed series airing as competition (Modern Family and Glee) and another high rated drama (Criminal Minds) SVU has seemed to find its audience.

Chuckit – NBC could always move Mercy to another timeslot. I think it could get a full year, but who knows when or where Chuck will return.

Tom – I think based on consistency, ABC will keep the 2 hour comedy block wednesday with possibly scheduling changes. Maybe move Scrubs and Ted to 8 and 8:30, leave MF and CT in their slots and move The Middle to air post DWTS in March. A veteran comedy has a better chance of leading out the night then a new show. As for Lost, maybe Tuesdays at 9 or the less likely wednesdays at 10.

Kenny – ABC is nowhere near done on wednesdays. If you compare this year’s wednesday to last year, this year on average is doing way better than the Pushing Daisies/Private Practice/Dirty Sexy Money trio. ABC just needs a little retooling by midseason, including replacing Hank with a new comedy and Eastwick with a new drama. What might work out better by January is the work place comedy hour at 8-9 (Scrubs and Better off Ted) and the family comedy hour from 9-10 (Modern Family and The Middle) MF could help Middle out and if they switch Cougar Town to air post Dancing at 9:30 in March that might work as a better fit.

  48. Doug (2) says:

The Forgotten and Eastwick will stumble along until January. One will be replace by Lost, the other by… ? Who knows. ABC should do a Tuesday combo of DWTS/V/Lost (or switch Lost and V, but V needs the DWTS lead-in more than Lost does), then the same on Wednesday with Ugly Betty at 10pm. I’m a fan of UB, yes, but it also fits with the tone of the night better than Eastwick does, or Lost would.

  49. Chuckit says:

I hate the way NBC is handling Chuck. Are you trying to tell me they cannot pull over a 2.0 with 7+ million on Wed.

This show gets treated like a step child. Now they are thinking about bringing it back in Jan/Feb. Huh?

If they do that, then I am convinced they want it to fail.

  50. Chuck Tranberg says:

Chuckit, why not bring back Chuck after the Olympics as is planned? If it were on now it would only be preempted for several weeks for the Olympics anyway. They may as well wait.

  51. Tom says:

“is a bad slot for every show!”

Err, what? Fox & CW don’t air anything in the hour, and the lone scripted competition, CSI:NY, floats around the low 3s nowadays.

Also, SVU got 3s there last year.

An ABC show could easily get low 2s there, like Castle & PP do against stronger competition.

  52. Mary says:

i think mercy is safe. it won the hour three once on five, and was third in the demo above CW and cbs since it started, the numbers are really great and stable. since it started( final numbers):
    8.5 mill/2.3/7
    7.5 mill/2/7
    7.3 mill/1.9/6
    7.4 mill/2/6
7.3 mill/2/6 lets see the finals tomorrow..
i dont see 100 question, persons anknown or marriage ref going anywhere, like parks and rec, community or trauma.
of course it will be renewed, and idol is not this big opponent, the two show have really different audience

  53. Chief says:

It will be interesting to see if Modern Family gets a bounce since Glee will be off for the next few weeks. Although I don’t know how many times it will be going up against the World Series on Fox as opposed to a Glee repeat.

  54. chrisjozo says:

I am very proud of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried. They are the little sitcoms that could, even if they often can’t. I enjoy watching them and I’m glad they are getting better numbers. They still have a long way to go but at least they are in the right direction.

  55. Anonymous says:

Hey, did anyone see this….Hulu to start CHARGING in 2010??

  56. Chuck Tranberg says:

I think Leno will run at least a year and he will be gone. The affiliates are getting anxious. Of course if in the repeat season Leno suddenly does extraordinaily well, then all bets are off. But if the ratings continue to be so-so or worse then it’s gone. How could NBC handle Leno? Well, I suppose they could continue to have him on Friday night and offer him a Saturday night show too, just so they don’t show anything other than repeats. Leno would probably turn it down.

  57. MC says:

I love that a show with basically no competition that pulls a 2.0 (and may well drop to a 1.9 in the finals) is being discussed as something that could stick around for the season. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 NBC lineup!

Eastwick: Been nice knowing you but it’s time to go.

Kudos to SYTYCD, Glee, The Middle, Modern Fam and Cougar Town.

  58. Michael says:

I can’t understand why NBC would keep Eastwick on during sweeps- it’s getting a 1.7.

  59. Tommy says:

Mary there is one thing to keep in mind. Mercy isn’t competing with ABC, CBS, FOX, and the CW when it comes to getting a back 9 or being renewed for 2010-11. Mercy is competing with the rest of NBC’s lineup. Mercy isn’t going to be the first show canceled by NBC, I think that honor will go to Trauma, but Mercy will probably be the next one on the chopping block. Yes Parks and Recreation gets lower numbers, but Comedies are treated differently than Dramas.

  60. Mumbo says:

When do networks announce their official midseason schedules? Or does that kind of stuff just trickle out as it comes?

I think Chuck’s pretty much a lock for that Monday at 8:00 slot in March. Who knows what it’ll be paired with, though. I’m guessing Day One will run four weeks in Trauma’s spot before the Olympics, and I’m assuming Trauma’s cancelled, so. Persons Unknown maybe?

I wonder what will happen with 100 Questions. I’m under the impression it will bomb worse than Community or Parks, though it will still likely replace one of those two in the midseason – no way they’re pissing away half an hour of Biggest Loser for it.

Mercy may make it to May, but I don’t really see any other spot for Parenthood (except Monday, but then were does Persons Unknown go?) so maybe not.

  61. Tommy says:

    Michael, NBC wouldn’t ;-)

  62. Sam says:

After stumbling onto “Mercy” during a Saturday rebroadcast during the second week of the season, I’ve found it to be one of the few shows I look forward to each week. Yes, it needs to do better in the demo (getting past Old Christine is possible, though I doubt it will ever top SYTYCD), but it did win its hour in total viewers. What other NBC shows can make that claim on any given night? I know, no one cares about total viewers, yada yada, but given the overall weakness of NBC’s schedule AND the genuine possibility that the Leno experiment will be deemed a failure, I think NBC would be well served to hang on to any program that shows promise. And “Mercy” certainly does.

  63. the128boy says:

NBC is in a tough spot right now.

Keep Mercy or get rid of it?

What about Heroes, is that the right time slot, or should it return to 9pm?

    What about the Community/Parks conundrum?

    L&O 21?

How about the fact that they have very little flow from show to show right now? (Seriously… pairing Heroes with Trauma??)

    Mid-Season schedule?

    MON
    8. Heroes/Persons Unknown
    9. Day One/Chuck
When Heroes is done, hype the crap out of Persons Unknown and let it try to build up Chuck at 9.

    TUE
    8. Biggest Loser
    9. Biggest Loser
It works, its cheap… keep it.

    WED
    8. Parenthood/Mercy
    9. L&O: SVU
If Parenthood ever actually premieres, lead-in to SVU… otherwise make a new push for Mercy ads in January and hope it can make it though Hurricane Idol in the spring.

    THU
    8. Community/100 Questions
    8:30. Parks And Recreation
    9. The Office
    9:30. 30 Rock
Don’t shake it up just to break it up. Destroying 3 years of what has worked so that Community *maybe* builds post-Office is foolish. Run Community repeat free until Spring, have 100 Questions take over (and see if it ups the numbers at all) and then bring Community back for April or so, in time for sweeps.

    FRI
    8. Dateline
    9. Law & Order
Why not put your scripted show in the hour where it can get the most viewers? Why continue to have a scripted drama lead into a newsmag? And if ratings stay where they are, keep L&O #21 on broadcast.

    SUN
    7. The Marriage Ref

Welcome back Mr. Seinfeld, things are a little different since the last time you worked here. Please feel free to take off your coat and stay a while.

  64. UKTVFan says:

I wonder if the final Phillies-Dodgers game of the NLCS on TBS last night had any effect on the ABC comedies. As a Phillies fan, I chose to watch the series-winning game (well, at 8pm it was the “potential series-winning game!”), and will be catching up on The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town over the next few days.

  65. Tom says:

Mumbo has the right of it. Mondays is likely still Chuck/PU, Tue is likely still BL, Wed is likely still Parenthood/SVU, Thursday is likely still various comedies, Friday is likely still L&O/Dateline.

Mercy might survive until the Olympics (with extra episodes), but it won’t air afterwards. What show do you really think NBC will kill to make room for a show struggling to do 2.0 in a weak timeslot?

  66. Tommy says:

I’m sure the NLCS had some effect UKTVFan.

  67. Tom says:

My guesses are for March+, of course.

Mumbo, usually networks don’t announce the schedules until late November, if not December. No point in saying “Show X is totally canceled!” and ruining its sweeps ratings.

  68. Tommy says:

Tom, I think you are right about Mercy only running until the Olympics, but that’s been the game plan since NBC announced it’s schedule in May.

  69. TDinVA says:

“Eastwick” is one of the best shows on TV. It is funny and very entertaining. ABC just has a mess on their hands on Wednesday nights. “Hank” is awful and so is “Modern Family.” Ty Burrell ruins the whole show with his hip-hop dad that makes me want to vomit. “The Middle” and “Cougar Town” are the best comedies and will unfortunately probably suffer from the poor lead-ins they both have. I think ABC should try “Eastwick” at a different time slot or leave it where it is as I am sure they don’t have anything else that will draw 5 million viewers on a Wednesday night at 10pm. They could try showing it after “DWTS: The Results” at 10pm and see if it helps or try it once or twice after “Desperate Housewives” on a Sunday night or even after “Grey’s Anatomy” on a Thursday night.

  70. Bobby Brady says:

Hank is unwatchable — a total embarrassment for all involved.

Modern Family has not hit bottom. Wait until those two hour Idol auditions start in January… I’ll bet Modern Family and Cougar Town go down to 2.3 and 2.1

  71. RViewer says:

Very good numbers for CM, was again last night most watched show and it was one of their best episode ever. Never saw the twist at the end coming!

  72. Tommy says:

TD, how can you say Modern Family is a bad lead in? It’s the highest rated show on ABC Wednesdays. I think Cougar Town would suffer if it wasn’t behind Modern Family.

  73. Catherine says:

One of the reasons Wednesday night might be lower than say, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, is that in many parts of the country Wednesday is a Church night. It is here in Kansas and I’m fairly sure that would affect viewing in the southern parts of the country too. Services start at 7 p.m. and probably run longer than an hour. It is also the night for youth church classes.

  74. Jayme says:

I just can’t wait for Glee to get stuck being American Idol and see what type of rating powerhouse it might become then.

  75. Dan says:

Tommy – Mercy could still be around should it get a full year. NBC’s schedule announced in May is tentative so anything can happen until then.

  76. j says:

It’d be interesting if Wednesdays @9 was the only hour to have 4 shows at 3+ ratings, esp with Wednesdays @8 having 0 shows at that this fall.

    Top Model wins 8 o’clock, & Leno>Mercy, on a relative basis.

  77. Justine says:

I’ve been watching eastwick so far this season, hoping it would improve. But after last night’s episode it has lost it’s spot on my dvr.

  78. Kyle says:

Do you have the Law & Order SVU Household rating, please?

  79. CSM says:

Crazy 4 way race at 9pm and now SVU a very close 4th, kind of cool that these shows all are performing well enough to likely be renewed for next year despite all competing against each other.

FOX has to still be happy with how Wednesdays are going. Now big question is what happens in 3 weeks when they return after baseball.

CBS is definitely consistent, I mean it literally looks like every show is identical to last week’s prelims. Christine&Gary are low for CBS, but since they aren’t dropping CBS might keep them around.

ABC at least has a strong 9pm but 8 and 10 are not good. I’d imagine they want to try to keep comedies on from 8-10 for this season, so Middle most likely stays put, but not sure what replaces Hank. Has ABC announced its sweeps plans? I’d imagine Hank isn’t/won’t be on it. Eastwick will likely stay and air all 13 eps and then LOST will possibly get placed here in January.

NBC must be glad that SVU seems to be improving and is inching closer to last year’s ratings, so an unexpected bright spot there. Mercy is doing ok for NBC but I don’t know if that’s enough. I think it will air 13 episodes, maybe get a few more made and then no final decision on it will be made until the spring.

CW doesn’t seem to care much with half their night a repeat. Model seems to be declining, but it was so far ahead of everything, that it doesn’t matter but I guess it is their #2 show now behind Vampire Diaries.

  80. Kyle, SVU had a 6.1/9 HH rating/share in the fast nationals

  81. Mike says:

How much does baseball normally affect broadcast TV ratings?

  82. CK says:

Modern Family is a very sharp and funny show and gets alot of blog time buzz. Look for it at the Emmy’s next fall. It’s likely to grow in viewers until January when American Idol sucks all the live viewers away. ABC leads or is tied 9:00 and 9:30. That hour looks solid for now.
Have heard that ABC is going to give Eastwick one more promotional push (E!online link below).

    http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b149773_This_Just_In__Jillian_Michaels_Is_Losing_It.html

  83. R.G says:

Old Christine will be canceled sooner or later.

  84. Jalen People says:

is this the first time that gary Unmarried beat christine in total viewers and demo??
    I THINK SO!!

  85. Bill Gorman says:

The 9pm Wednesday hour for ABC is definitely their best news of the early season, but 8pm and 10pm on Wednesdays are not.

  86. Gerry says:

Glad to see Rick Mercer doing well. In addition to Corner Gas, Made in Canada (AKA The Industry in the US) was some of the best comedy ever.

  87. James says:

    Why won’t Mercy just DIE?!?!

  88. Kat says:

Eastwick is a decent show on a channel it’s not meant for in a bad time slot. Eastwick really is a show that should have been picked up by the CW rather than ABC. But then ABC is one of those channels that there are very few shows I watch and they all seem to be the 10pm slot show. Forgotton I could take or leave but I love Castle and Eastwick.

  89. Tar says:

Thanks again for the canadian ratings anonymous – glad to see Being Erica is back to over 500,000 if that was its season 1 average i’d assume its looking good for season 3 (similar ratinga + critical acclaim +Awards)

  90. Lisztomania says:

I wonder how great Modern Family’s ratings could be if it actually had a decent lead-in. Hope it doesn’t slip from here, it’s probably my favorite new show of the season.

  91. andrew says:

Kat, I love the show too.

You know, if ABC was really smart, they’d be on the phone trying to get Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher or Susan Sarandon to make cameo appearances. After all, Veronica Cartwright’s involvement, while nostalgic, really isn’t helping much.

I’d hate to think Cher, Susan or Michelle would feel themselves to be “above” doing network TV, but what else have they been doing lately?

It couldn’t hurt. Do you hear me, ABC?

  92. derek says:

I would like the numbers for The Ruins which aired yesterday @ 10PM EST on MTV. Thanks!

  93. Tommy says:

@ Dan, unless NBC changes their game plan they are going with seasonal seasons this year for most shows. That was the sticking point when it came to Medium, NBC wanted it, but didn’t want a 22 episode season due to each show having shorter seasons so they could basically do 1 season in the fall, and a 2nd season after the Olympics. CBS wouldn’t agree to a shorted episode order (andI may be wrong on this, the star’s contract I believe had a 20+ episode guarantee in it.) so NBC canceled it. The only shows that were on both schedules were SUV, Biggest Loser, and the Comedy Block. So most of NBC’s lineup in that scenario will only get between 13 and 17 episodes. So while Mercy may have get a few more episodes ordered, I don’t believe that it will get what you call a full year (I assume by a full year you mean 22-23 episodes or what’s called the back nine.)

  94. Gleebo says:

I cannot say enough positive things about Modern Family. Knew it was supposed to be good but it surprises me every week with how awesome it is.

The Middle has turned out to be one that grows on me each week…very similar to Malcolm in the Middle but maybe even more eccentric from the beginning. MitM started out pretty subdued and as it progressed Hal became more and more zany and over the top as the show aged. It started as a showcase for what people thought was a young new star actor with Frankie Muniz and by the time it went off the air all that you were really tuning in for was to see what Brian Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek were gonna do next. On the Middle Neil Flynn of Scrubs fame seems to be the most normal and grounded of the entire family.

  95. Alex says:

To what I would imagine is the surprise of just about everyone NBC is slowly making up ground on Wednesday night.

Mercy is no longer the complete disaster it appeared to be and after that worryingly slow start SVU is starting to pick its audience back up and just in time for sweeps. Hopefully it’ll crack a 3.0 next week. Personally I’d be interested in the half hour break downs for Mercy and SVU this week, it’d be interesting to know whether the second half hour of Mercy beat The Middle and whether the second half hour of SVU at least managed to equal Cougar Town.

Speaking of the ABC comedies, the original euphoria over them is slowly starting to fade. Despite all the buzz heading into the season Cougar Town is dropping and after watching a few episodes I’m not all that surprised. Nor am I surprised that Hank and The Middle started weak and are getting weaker. I’m a little disappointed that Modern Family has dropped quite so far but given what’s surrounding it that’s not that hard to understand and it is comparatively speaking still doing well. With the numbers as they are I think my thoughts that Lost returns to Wednesday nights and the comedy block moves to Tuesday is getting closer to reality. Meanwhile the less said about Eastwick the better.

Fox continues to have a great night, they’re looking for the 18-34 demos on Wednesday nights and So You Think You Can Dance and Glee are both delivering that nicely. Personally I hope we get to see Glee repeat next week rather than baseball just because I think it’ll be interesting to see how Glee repeats.

CBS has to do something about the second comedy block, it isn’t working in the current form. I still think shipping an established show from the Monday block over to Wednesday night is the way forward, whether that should be Rules of Engagement or How I Met Your Mother (the only real options) is open to debate. Personally I’d go with Mother. Criminal Minds continues to do well and New York continues to look less than strong. Although given how weak the 10PM competition is it does look fantastic.

Over on The CW I continue to be amazed that they’re airing repeats out of Top Model…

  96. Riff Rafferty says:

Swoosie Kurtz stops by “Hank” next Tuesday to shoot their “Hanksgiving” episode. I think it will be on November 25. No word yet when Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Kristin Chenoweth and Chi McBride will be making their guest appearances.

That colorful peacock at least has something to smile about. People are finally finding “SVU” in its new time slot. Too bad they’re not finding the kind of good show that used to air in its old time slot. Although it’s rather concerning that they haven’t picked up anything yet. “Mercy” is their fourth-highest rated show and won its time slot two weeks running. What the hell do they want from it?

And “Eastwick” fell? Again? Wow, viewers REALLY aren’t enchanted with this one. ABC pushed this week’s episode pretty hard, too.

  97. Fin says:

Mercy should receive a full season pick up, even though a 2.0 isn’t great, its better than nothing. Especially considering its proberly the cheapest out of all NBC drama’s (and still beats L&0, and Trauma)

  98. ken says:

Tommy, I thought that L&O and Southland were indicated as full year shows ( no split season on Friday) it’s just that no one expected Southland to last beyond the original 13 episode order and to be replaced with something, probably Friday Night Lights.

With a continuous run 13 episodes will last until the week of December 14th. If there are two weeks off at Christmas then there 6 weeks until the Olympics in February. Heroes has a 19 episode order to take it through. Mercy and Trauma are fighting for an extended order to get those extra episodes between 13 and 19, if they don’t get it the question is what does NBC fill those hours with pre-olympics, Day One? that game show about deceptively simple tasks? Reruns?

  99. Shem says:

Besides for SVU, Wednesday doesn’t have anything going on really.
    Good for NBC.

  100. silvia says:

Real World/Road Rules: The Ruins, please. And also The Hills if you can. Thank you! :) ~ Silvia

  101. Mercy Fan says:

I was hooked on MERCY from the first episode. I think the stories have been great. The acting is terrific. Around our house, we can’t wait for Wednesday night to get here. Love this show!!! NBC..PLEASE don’t cancel this program!!!!!

  102. RViewer says:

From Travis Yanan, final numbers for Criminal Minds:

    Criminal Minds
    - 14.268 million viewers
    - 9.0/14 HH
    - 3.8/10 A18-49

  103. jj says:

good for law and order svu the show is finding it’s core audience. 2.9 will make them very happy

and mercy will probably last till march or maybe will pop up in nbc’s 2010 fall schedule.

and, oh, eastwick is near on getting yank, sadly, jay leno show is an easy competition, still the show barely register

and hank, why did abc even picked up this show?

  104. AprilFox says:

Unless Hockey Night in Canada is on, NCIS kicks butt in Canada. My sons ages 14 and 17 love both the NCIS shows as does my husband, I prefer the original to the new LA series. I prefer The Good Wife and L&O SVU over NCIS: LA.

  105. Tommy says:

ken, I may be wrong on the shorter season episode counts. The point I was trying to make is that Mercy will probably have it’s season finale right before the Olympics, and not go all the way till May.

  106. Patrice says:

My favorite is still “The Middle” but I wish they would find
some good material for Kesley Grammer, Hank is not the right
fit for him. He needs a wife like Shelly Long. Take her off Modern
and put her on Hank to help the show.

  107. angelsgal says:

ROBERT I noticed your comment re: NCIS in Candaa. Cant answer that but NCIS is domainate down here in Australia and is the number 1 US Import on TV and usually in the top 10 shows of the week. Our number 1 show atm is an Aussie drama called Packed to the Rafters (and its roumoured that ABC are doing a US version of this show) and NCIS competes with it and comes a convincing second. Despite not going up against the number 1 show of the week, no other US drama can match NCIS figures. We all know if dominate another night for the network, but they rader be competive with Rafters (its been called the equlivilant of the NCIS v Idol battle and NCIS is reffered to being Rafters proof the way its Idol proof in the US)

  108. maggie says:

I love Eastwick…I really like this show and would hate for it to be canceled. I hope if ABC does pull the plug on the show that someone else picks it up.

  109. Jim says:

Since NCIS does so well at 8, perhaps NCIS LA should be moved to Wednesdays at 8 and The Mentalist moved back to the slot it did so well with last year. Christine and Gary are throwaways anyhow, and I’m sure CBS can come up with something to fill the Thursdays at 10 slot that is a better fit with CSI.

  110. TY says:

do you have season to date C3 ratings?? It would be nice to see a year-to-year comparison on the numbers that the clients are paying for.

  111. Gilly says:

The Hank haters are cracked. Grammer is hilarious, and the show gets better every week. I bet the little clique posting here doesn’t even watch the show. Give it time ABC, we shall overcome!

  112. Bill Gorman says:

TY, sadly, we sporadically see C3 commercial ratings for small numbers of shows (like 20), not nearly enough to do any long term looks at.

  113. jamie says:

ok,im from england,we dont get ur rating system,a show like dr who from england gets upon average 6 million viewers a week in the uk alone-work out that some of ur states our bigger than england, then take into account so called winners like lost, flashforward, greys anatomy etc ratings which get around the ten mill mark and its very very easy to realise everyones estimations are wrong by a waaaaayyy long waaaaaaaaaayyy.
its just silly to take data from the nielson system and chat about what the numbers are when they are all wrong,I have about 12 american friends in different households and they all tivo, not one just has a normal tv.
So eastwick realisticly is on about 40 mill viewers and lost, flashforward on about 80 to 90 million viewers!

  114. What was Modern Family’s best rating — 4.0?

Alex, you’re one commenter I don’t skip. World Series game 1 is next Wednesday, and game 6 is scheduled for the following Wednesday (Nov. 4). I’m guessing a Yankees-Phillies series would go 6.

  115. Michael J says:

    @Gilly,

Honestly, last night I tried to find a reason to laugh during “Hank” but to no avail. It tells a lot about a show when you need a laugh track to cue the audience to laugh…really, the actors are great but the writing leaves so much to be desired for.

  116. tdot says:

A&E has been airing Criminal Minds a lot the past few months
I’m hoping the NCIS/USA effect will start taking effect

  117. forg says:

J.R. Herbaugh: Modern Family best rating is 4.2 for its premiere.
The final numbers went up to 3.4 so good for Modern Family, yay! Good trend so far for the show: 4.2 – 3.8 – 3.4 – 3.6 – 3.4
    I hope they stay consistent.

I love The Middle too, I’m glad it already got a full season despite the low ratings. But for what is worth it did built a lot from Hank.

  118. Zodd says:

Modern Family is a great show. It could be doing better but the early two shows in the lineup is hurting the TV ratings for the show. It’s still doing good though. :)

  119. Zodd says:

I mean 5.84 for Hank and 6.42 for The Middle yikes. Really think Hank is screwing up the entire lineup. bad bad lead in.

  120. forg says:

Modern Family will have Benjamin Bratt and Edward Noton as guest on future episodes so I guess it will help boost the ratings.

Hank got 1.5 in the demo and The Middle is 2.0, its not good but at least The Middle improved from Hank, a better lead in would help the show.

I really feel bad for Kelsey, maybe they should try stunt casting, one of the Frasier cast perhaps like “Niles”, I haven’t seen David Hyde Pierce since Frasier ended.

I was actually rooting for Hank to do well just for the sake of the whole ABC Comedy Wednesday line up but oh well.

  121. ljo says:

    R.G says:

“Old Christine will be canceled sooner or later.”

Well, I guess you’ve guaranteed yourself bragging rights with that bold prediction.

  122. Boyd says:

    Hank – yanked before Jan.
    Eastwick – yanked by Jan.
Mercy – will make a full season although not necessarily in the same timeslot

Come January, SNF is finished, so expect NBC to move L&O to Sunday, pairing it w/Celebrity Apprentice. Mercy may end up in L&O’s Friday slot come Jan., as so not to compete with AI. Just a hunch.

  123. Mark says:

The Middle and Cougar Town make me laugh more than Modern Family does. But they’re all still enjoyable. I’m happy they got picked up for full seasons, I hope they return next year also.

I’m glad to see Glee staying in its usual range.

  124. Boyd says:

Jalen People says: “is this the first time that gary Unmarried beat christine in total viewers and demo??
    I THINK SO!!”

That’s kind of like saying New Coke actually beat Crystal Pepsi in a national taste test. Face it, both shows are losers. If you take into account Gary leads into Criminal Minds, then it should stand to reason that it should probably be higher than Christine every week, now shouldn’t it?

  125. Brendan says:

modern family is awesome…the middle annoys me soo much. escpecially that one girl with the braces, she’s ugly and not a very good actor…and as for hank, just have to say it’s okay

  126. Red says:

Christine is just sticking around on CBS until it has enough episodes for syndication. Then ABC will be free to pick it up but why the hell bother?

Gary is only hanging around to pair with OC. It’s proven that it has no legs on its own so it’s gone come May. Two years with no real upward trend is by far enough. CBS will feel it has given it more than a fair chance and let it go.

  127. aaronhotchner says:

I’d love to see Chuck on Wednesdays at 8. It’s such a wasted spot. I usually watch CM, tape Modern Family and the 2nd half of Glee. Last night I was watching the Dodgers so could only tape that while watching CM

If someone would move something to 8 it would be nice. Glee, Modern Family, whatever.

  128. Red says:

The Middle is a really cloying and oh-so annoying rip-off of Malcolm in … heck, they even ripped off the name. Only Raymond’s wife is NO Lois!!! She should just give it a rest and retire off her residuals.

  129. aznfratboy says:

I would like to see Eastwick and Brothers and Sisters change timeslot, it makes more sense, I mean, all 4 comedies that ABC airs on Wednesdays nights are all family oriented, maybe not Cougar Town as such, but the other 3 very much are, so to have Brother’s and Ssters straight after it makes perfect sense have a “family night” thing or something, and have the “girl power” or whatever night on Sunday where Eastwick has the lead in of Desperate Housewives. I don’t watch Desperate Housewives, but from the ads I see in Australia, it’s all about women and their weird and wacky lives on Wisteria Lane, and Eastwick is almost like Charmed

  130. Sausageroll says:

    @Jamie

80 million people are not watching Lost, don’t be ridiculous.

  131. ABCFanatic2009 says:

wow 4.93 for Eastwick! Ugly betty’s last friday viewer count is way higher

Ugly betty should be moved at Weds 10pm timeslot

  132. vsaint says:

Yeah if would have been nice to have Eastwick behind DH, but it’s too late to switch. Brothers and Sisters is compatible with DH, and could have gone head to head with CSI NY.
Eastwick is barely above 4 million, and no need to pump LOST up too much, it’s one of the more popular shows are the world and critally acclaimed, pretty rare.

  133. Alex says:

Jamie a few points to make regarding your arguments about ratings.

Firstly you should remember that the UK and US use very similar systems to gather ratings information, so if you’re arguing that the US system is inaccurate then the UK system is just as inaccurate. You must also remember that Doctor Who (which averages 7-10 million viewers) is one of British television’s biggest shows and far from the norm for British television these days, that sits more in line with 3-5 million.

As it is Doctor Who on average pulls in more than 10% of the UK population and usually scores a huge share of the available audience, which generally speaking is more important in British ratings than your actual total viewers. Now keeping that in mind if you’re using the ‘Doctor Who projection’ then the biggest shows on American television should actually be taking 30+ million viewers, which would put them in line with the 10% of the population figure, which would also be not a million miles away from what the biggest shows would attract pre-cable.

Having said all that you have to remember that millions of Americans watch cable. So whilst 5 million people might watch Eastwick its not even close to a stretch to guess that ten times as many people are watching something on cable. Just as it has in the UK cable has eaten into the broadcast audience, remember in the UK it wasn’t that long ago that many shows were pulling 10+ million viewers now that’s reserved to ‘big’ episodes of the soaps, the season finale of Doctor Who and The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. The numbers haven’t fallen because less people watch television they’ve fallen because less people are watching traditional broadcast.

  134. Matt H says:

Eastwick should get renewed. It’s a great show and Lindsay Price is the hottest woman on television. I don’t watch it on TV, but rather I do on Hulu.

  135. Thanks, forg. I wouldn’t bet that Modern Family will stay above 3.0 the entire season.

  136. abe says:

Why don’t they flip the middle and hank?

  137. Bill Gorman says:

abe, Hank will be getting flipped into the cancel bin soon enough.

  138. DefConDre says:

I’m just thrilled “Modern Family” has been picked up for a full season order as it’s the BEST NEW SHOW OF THE YEAR. I would hope that more people would tune in because it’s very much in the vein of “Arrested Development.”

  139. Katie says:

Here’s an important question (don’t know if its been answered) how expensive is Eastwick? Compared to some of the other failing shows for instance is it cheaper than Ugly Betty which ABC moved to Friday nights to basically get it off there network. I could see the cancellation of Ugly Betty and Eastwick moved to Friday nights.
