GLEE’S “DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’” GOES GOLD

BLOCKBUSTER SERIES’ MUSIC SURPASSES 2 MILLION DOWNLOADS AS SOUNDTRACK HITS STORES NOVEMBER 3

(New York, NY: Columbia Records; October 29, 2009) – In yet another sign that Glee has gone from smash comedy hit to cultural phenomenon, the cast’s rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’“ has just been certified Gold for digital sales in excess of 500,000 downloads, and to date, over two million Glee songs have been purchased online. Seven songs from Glee now occupy spots in the top 200 of iTunes’ Top Songs chart and Newsweek recently observed that the FOX series’ “rabid online fanbase has given the show’s music a life of its own.” It’s this fervor for the music that prompted the New York Times to say “from ‘Cabaret’ to Kanye, Songs of ‘Glee’ are a hit” and the Los Angeles Times to add “this comedy has become music to our ears.”

On Tuesday, November 3, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 hits stores.  This highly anticipated debut soundtrack will feature 17 songs heard in Glee’s first season (see below for full track listing).  Glee has set itself apart as one of the few scripted television shows to feature music so prominently and successfully. Entertainment Weekly recently stated that Glee was able to accomplish this “by making music so catchy and addictive, it’s taken on a life – and revenue stream – of its own.” They also went on to proclaim “the snarky, theatrical series is a cult phenomenon on its way to becoming a national obsession.”

The full track listing for “Glee: The Music, Volume 1” is as follows:

  1. “Don’t Stop Believin’”
  2. “Can’t Fight This Feeling”
  3. “Gold Digger”
  4. “Take a Bow”
  5. “Bust Your Windows”
  6. “Taking Chances”
  7. “Alone”
  8. “Maybe This Time”
  9. “Somebody to Love”
  10. “Hate On Me”
  11. “No Air”
  12. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”
  13. “Keep Holding On”
  14. “Bust a Move”
  15. “Sweet Caroline”
  16. “Dancing with Myself”
  17. “Defying Gravity”

Where’s The Thong Song? I loved that one.

  2. Grace W. says:

Fabulous news. I love Glee, and they really have done a spectacular job with the music.

Vamp Mom, I know that a full-length version of “Taking Chances” was recorded, even though only a brief segment of it aired in one of the episodes, but I think some of the songs were not recorded as full-length tracks. Maybe “The Thong Song” was only a partial recording, so they didn’t want to release it?

  3. Samuel says:

Things are going well for Fox, interesting concept they got their, make money from the tv ratings and the music

  4. Anonymous says:

LOL Fox only makes approximately 9 cents per download – so 9 cents x 2 million downloads = $180,000

The rights to all these songs probably cost that much, so I highly doubt Fox is making any profits off this.

  5. AZTop says:

I would think we’re going to see an interesting cross-over of Glee into American Idol. You just know that the Glee cast will perform on one of the results shows. Fox is trying to brand themselves as a hot music destination for the younger demographic. So far – it seems to be working.

  6. Mandi says:

True. But they’re about to start selling a cd not to mention a concert tour with the cast– Fox definitely isn’t going to be making just 9 cents a pop on that…

Love the show. Disappointed that the mash-ups It’s My Life/Confessions and Walking on Sunshine/Halo aren’t on there.

  7. Shaz says:

Well, that’s just downloads. I expect the soundtrack album will sell even better — that’s where the profits will be.

  8. mayorofsmpleton says:

This is just Vol 1, I believe #2 is coming in December.

  9. Jeremy says:

I have to wonder how the soundtrack album will sell, expecially on iTunes. I would expect fans of the songs would have bought them already on iTunes.

  10. Darrin says:

Is this show for teenage girls? Who is buying this crap?

  11. Danny says:

This has got to be a joke right? lol Okay, Sheeple, all together now, say “baaaaaaaaaaaa”

  12. Tks says:

Not a girl not a teen. But I love the show and the music.

  13. CK says:

FOX is not likely making much money off the downloads, but the cross promotion is invaluable. This show is in a risky genre for TV but with the success of High School Musical, its clear there is an audience out there. FOX has found a way to tap that interest and the show is building in key demos. Watch for musicals on other nets…
Personally I was skeptical, but in watching the show it is way funnier and far more wicked-clever than HSM. It’s a guilty pleasure to watch.

  14. Budo says:

I don’t feel guilty for watching Glee, at all.

  15. R.G says:

Glee is a show for people who think Journey’s original song sucked. Which is not true.

  16. R.G says:

I forgotto say this but they messed up Kanye West’s Gold Digger. Why couldn’t Kanye interrupt those kids and said “I’m really happy for you, but I’mma let you finish, but my version of Gold Digger was the best of all time!”?

  17. TomKH says:

Where’s “Say a little Prayer For You”?

  18. WowZa says:

Im a male, and in his 20’s, and very straight – and I am aa huge fan. It is hilarious. It is my favorite thing to watch on TV all week, actually. My favorite was before HOUSE, now it is GLEE.

Look for this baby to not only be pulling in the viewers (once you do start to watch, your really hooked. It’s weird), but it will also be winning emmy’s, It will be best new show, and best comedy next year I bet. Well, actually, for the first time in years look fr a real contest in BEST COMEDY. 30 Rock, Modern Family, Glee…. but out of all of those, I would say Glee is likely to win. WIll be a fun show this year for once..

    Cant wait.

  19. Annie says:

Glee’s version of The Thong Song was released as a single, but I guess it’s not on this first collection.
