Thursday finals: Grey’s Anatomy, The Mentalist, 30 Rock tick up, Parks & Recreation, The Jay Leno Show down

Posted on 30 October 2009 by Robert Seidman

THE MENTALIST

No major movement, but as is typical a few shows were up a tenth or down a tenth of an adults 18-49 ratings point.  Preliminary or finals, The Vampire Diaries held its own against NBC during the 8pm-9pm hour and The Mentalist and Private Practice were neck and neck at 10pm…

  1. rob says:

Vampire Diaries is up with adults and women 18-34. Very impressive and it beat Parks and Recreation! Wow NBC is soo sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Lynn says:

I think Jay Leno is officially a failure in his new show.

  3. j says:

Vampire Diaries moves up to a 2.79 W18-34 average. Gossip is at 2.80. If Gossip is 2.7 next week, they’ll approximately tie for the season; any lower, and VD will be on top.

  4. Mumbo says:

Why do I get the feeling Community and Parks are in competition with each other.

I wonder how many more seasons CSI will stick around for. With the way it’s falling, at least I know it will end during my lifetime, I was starting to doubt it a few years ago.

  5. Alison says:

Hooray! I knew The Mentalist could do it! It beat CSI AND is now neck and neck in the demo with Private Practice. As you can tell I am a big fan of the show (well actually Simon Baker – the man is a god!!)

  6. smg77 says:

I stopped watching CSI when Grissom left and it looks like I wasn’t the only one.

  7. the128boy says:

Sad to see Parks down in finals. This marks 6 out of 7 weeks where it has had a 2.0 or 2.1 in finals.

Community’s highest rating in its new slot.

I can’t wait until next season… I firmly believe The Office has a chance of passing Grey’s Anatomy sometime in 2010…

Honestly, even at the end of last season, who would have thought the 3 titans would have shaken out like this?

    5.2 Grey’s Anatomy
    4.2 The Office
    3.4 CSI

How long can it really be before CBS finally switches Mentalist and CSI?

  8. Bill Gorman says:

Likely that the last half hour of Vampire Diaries beat P&R in adults 18-49, but impossible to know for sure.

  9. Holly says:

Not impossible. Travis posted the numbers over at pifeedback:

The Vampire Diaries edged out Parks & Recreation at 8:30pm in A18-49

    P&R – 2.0/5
    VD – 2.1/5

  10. Marcos says:

9pm timeslot would be healthy for Mentalist anywhere in the week but Thursday. It could take a big hit if it had to face Grey’s.

  11. Bill Gorman says:

The impossible becomes the possible! ;)

  12. the128boy says:

Just realized that is the first time since its series premiere after The Office that Parks has dropped from its lead-in.

I am already dreading May upfronts.

  13. izikavazo says:

I’d say that was the best Parks & Recreation yet.

  14. Jon says:

CBS has one weapon up its sleeve in the form of the Super Bowl slot, it’s likely to go to either The Mentalist or The Big Bang Theory. It’s not going to go to NCIS as it’s established and wouldn’t benefit from such a lead in or NCIS LA as new shows rarely get the slot.

CSI has got plenty of life in it, it’s too valuable for CBS to drop and the franchise rakes in money. I can see being move to 10pm though.

  15. Sarah says:

And SPN has its best 18-34 numbers of the season!

  16. GSFABC says:

A NCIS Repeat had more viewers than CSI, and the Demo nearly the same!

  17. So Cal says:

    Move the Mentalist to 9!

  18. billy says:

wow vampire diaries is doing really good. Those are huge numbers for the CW

  19. Tar says:

cool CW beat NBC 8:30 to 9

  20. Rob says:

Jay Leno has killed NBC. Put this show out of its misery.

  21. ragincajun1987 says:

Actually, I think The Mentalist should move to 8:00 to lead-off the night and Survivor could move to either Wednesday at 8:00 or Sunday. The Mentalist’s demos should at least equal Survivor at the earlier hour, and it will easily deliver around 4-5 million more viewers to the 9:00 show, whether it’s CSI or CBS’ next highest profile new drama.

  22. Jerry says:

Move The Jay Leno Show to the 12:35 am slot and put Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on the chopping block. Reserve the 10 PM slot for the dramas and Dateline NBC. I miss the “Predator” shows on Dateline.

  23. Jonathan B. says:

30 Rock is now the third most-watched non-sports programming on NBC. Who would have guessed THAT two years ago?

  24. Jerry, since we’re playing fast and loose with NBC’s schedule, why not suggest moving the news and Conan up one hour, and putting Leno on against Letterman?

  25. Dan says:

Mumbo – Parks and Community arent in competition. If anything Community has a better chance because its more acclaimed and its slightly newer. It seems NBC’s strategy is hold up competition at 9 with The Office and 30 Rock and completely give up on 8-9 with two newcomers. If I ran NBC id rather start out strong with 30 Rock at 8 which may help Parks a little better, then higher Office ratings which may benefit Commmunity.

Jonathan B – Not me, but who would have guessed The Office would be #1 after BARELY escaping cancellation and being NBC’s lowest rated scripted series in spring 2005. Imagine if NBC followed the numbers and axed The Office. What else is funny is that back in 2003 NBC axed Coupling because it was getting 9 million and NBC’s major comedies avaeraged 17 million (Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace). Now NBC’s highest rated comedy is getting 9 million and its lowest has 4 million and they still wont axe them.

Rajoncajin – I think CBS should move The Mentalist to 9 sundays next season after Cold Case gets axed, so CBS atleast has a veteran boosting the night. Then they have Sunday 10 and Thursday 20 for new series. The Mentalist is probably the first show that aired post CSI to ever do better than its lead in.

  26. Lisa says:

CSI is really weakening. It’s dropped so much from last season. I wonder how bad it’ll look next year, and actually how much life it has left in it.

  27. DenverDean says:

I find the all the “CSI is dead” talk pretty interesting. According to the most recent DVR numbers it was still in Top 10 18-49. That seems pretty darn good for a show in it’s 10th season in the most competitive time slot. Plus, it’s still drawing viewers — it does win that number — even though I know it’s not that important.

  28. Kareem says:

Am I the only one that thinks that Vampire Diaries did well on Thursday because all the women (18-34) fled to the CW to avoid the World Series?

I mean, the show does do well, but the spike in viewers methinks has something to do with an aversion to sports.

As for CSI, I’m glad it beat Gray’s in total viewers. It’s about the total number of eyeballs; that’s where the money is made.

  29. paul says:

Kareem, if total viewers is where all the money is made then what’s the need for the demos? the 18-49 year olds are where the money is made from because thats who advertisers pay to target:L

  30. vsaint says:

Check out the post of the ad rates for commericial times on shows.
CSI still does well, just not Grey’s well anymore.
I’m a CSI fan, but it’s gotten boring at times, sloppy writing and nothing new. It’s disappointing too, because the Producers, writers don’t want to take any chances. I hear them in interviews, but when i see the episodes, there either think there good or holding stuff back.
i’m hoping the 3 part crossover will be good, but i have my doubts.

  31. Cody says:

Is it just me or do you think the Lesbion kiss helped the drop in Flash Foward
