In Praise of Smallville: season highs and best Friday since last Smackdown! airing

Posted on 31 October 2009 by Robert Seidman

SMALLVILLE

I’ll add these to the overnight report, but I know there are a lot of Smallville fans out there so I wanted to call them out separately.

This isn’t a press release, but just so you know our contact at CW PR worked a little bit on the weekend to send us this info anyway.

  • Smallville climbed to it’s best adults 18-49 (1.2/4), adults 18-34 (1.2/5-tie) and total viewers (2.6mil) of the season.
  • This also marks our best performance in the time period in those categories since Sept. 08 (last Smackdown telecast).
  • Smallville was #1 in the hour among men 18-34 (1.4/6) and men 18-49 (1.4/5).

Note: we understand that a a Chicago Bulls game aired on the CW affiliate in Chicago so these numbers could get adjusted down a touch in the finals.

Oh thanks soooo much for this! Glad to see they are recognising its success!

  2. james says:

If this isn’t a press release, then what is it?

  3. James, it was an e-mail someone who works in CW PR sent to us. I consider them “ratings notes”. They won’t be sent out over any press release wire distribution, but they cared enough to make sure we knew :-)

  4. Tyson says:

    Thank you! Much appreciated!

  5. james says:

Thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated to all us Smallville fans. After being shipped over to Friday night we are very concerned about a Season 10.

  6. Leslie says:

Thanks for sharing. It’s great to hear Smallville doing well on Friday’s. Season 10 looks mighty good right now.

  7. Marcos says:

I think the “since last Smackdown telecast” part is somewhat anti-PR

  8. Graham says:

Thanks for putting out a report just for Smallville, Robert. The fans appreciate it, and you, very much! :)

So glad the show is doing well.

  9. Michelle says:

wow i didnt know smallville was a “guys show”…i totally thought all the girls watched it because of that GORGEOUS guy lead..I forget his name.
I dont watch the show, but Im happy for those that do =)

  10. JenSmith says:

This episode was very “woman” friendly as it moved along the Clark/Lois romance (first kiss). How is that for stereotyping? ;)

@Robert, is there any significance that the CW would tout this information knowing that it was preempted in Chicago? I would think (and may be wrong in this assumption) that they have the Chicago Bulls ratings.

Maybe the demos don’t go down significantly with Chicago removed? Or maybe they are celebrating while people are paying attention, hoping less people pay attention to the finals? LOL!

  11. JenSmith, the people who matter (advertisers) aren’t likely paying attention on a Halloween Saturday. Generally the impact of one single market outside of a huge football game does not have any big impact. I doubt the Bulls game will have much impact and the way things go with the finals adjustments, things often move around a tenth in either direction even when there are no local market pre-emptions.

As to whether The CW had the detail of how the Chicago market did last night, I don’t know. They will surely have it by Monday if they don’t already.

  12. JenSmith says:

@Robert, thanks! And point taken re Halloween Saturday. :)

  13. GEORGE 11 says:

so id the cw is happy with these ratings & will renew the show for next year why they cancel WWE FNS??

  14. Smallville says:

Smallville would’ve have done maybe even a tiny bit better if it aired in chicago last night to. The tiniest bit of viewers and good ratings from chicago could’ve helped. i live in chicago and now i have to wait till tomorrow to watch it =( was the episode better then the rest of the season? Was it good at all?

Smallville is a show for women and men and some may say it would be more for men but their are girl superheros, chloe, lois, tess, and a lot of girls think that clark (who is tom welling by the way your welcome) and oliver are awsome. Half of my school in illinois are big fans of Smallville.

  15. Dillan says:

@Smallville: Yes, the episode was truly awesome. Very nice pace, casting, music, visual effects, and of course, story/character development.

S9 Episodes 1 to 6 are the best first-six episode run in the show’s history.

  16. Smallville says:

out of the first 5 (not including crossfire because i havent seen it yet) I think the one that was the best would probably be Metallo or Rabid because metallo had great development in John Corben becoming Metallo, the fight with Metallo and Clark was good considering most fights in smallville stay like 3 mins long that fight was like 7. Rabis was good because i like all the zombies and i think they did 100% great job and their personality and how they look. Also the Oliver,Clark,Lois triangle was back in that episode which was good.

  17. Smallville says:

I hope that kelly, and brian start making the fights interesting and at least longer then 5 mins and action packed. Thats all i am asking. Considering that we are soon gonna see fights with the dark archer, hawkman, dr. fate, etc. they should at least make them longer.

  18. Sparkle says:

Thank you, Robert for the good Smallville news!
Any news of Smallville is greatly appreciated. :)

  19. mark wood says:

The ratings typically will go down anytime they are preempted for sports (there was one occasion on Thursdays that the shows SM and SN actually increased, which is very very rare). As for how much. It frankly depends on the sport and the market. We have seen drops of over 600,000 and .3 in the demos for some place like New York. But with Chicago it will probably be a couple hundred thousand (or less) and I doubt more then .2 in the demos.

And that drop should occur in the male demos, not so much the female, as sports typically have a much larger male viewing base.

As for the episode, it had some moments, but I honestly like the first three season much better. As for effects, yikes they really aren’t good. But that is a very minor complaint as writing, directing and acting are vastly more important.

And the lose of both Lex and Lionel has seriously hurt the show has no character matches those two, and certainly none of the acting (for antagonists) have come close.

  20. Carol says:

Was worry/pissed when CW aired an episode on Saturday not too long ago because a game. I don’t miss an episode so I am extremely happy it is doing good! So loved the twist with Clark and Loise! Thanks for sharing the good news…

  21. William says:

I was wrong, there is life after Michael Rosenbaum…

  22. ataraxis6 says:

Glad to know my favorite show is doing well. I hope we get to see season 10.

  23. rachel says:

    I love this show!Bravo!Smallville!

  24. we’ll see a season 10 if tom welling is up for it. No way CW lets smallville go. it’s pulling one of the best demos and viewers and its on a friday. Plus season of episodes mean more syndication money. It all really depends on Tom Welling

  25. Gabriela says:

Tom is signed for season 10 and he is now producer, I think 5/6 of the cast is contracted already for a 10 and on Comic Con you could see they were excited about it as the producers, so if a 10 is a no Go it will be networks decision, which now doubt since WB was the one fighting for Tom Welling to resign for 2 years so they won’t let them go that easily. Specially with the International view and DVD sells

  26. mark wood says:

    Jimmy

While its viewer total is good for the CW (this year, and how awful is that), its demo’s are not.

It has the lowest adult 18-34 ratings average of any show still airing on the CW, the lowest adult w 18-49, the lowest w 18-34 demo), and its average for a18-49 is I believe the 2nd lowest (Melrose Place is lower).

And it no longer can claim largest male demo numbers in either a 18-49 or a 18-34. THough it does score higher then GG, OTH, MP, 90210 and Top Model.

  27. Smallville says:

@Gabriella, yes tom welling, erica durance and callum blue are signed on for a season 10. Callum blue is signed on for a 2 year story arc so yea. Justin Hartly stated he would love to return for a season 10 so it really depends on if the producers want him back and if he wants to truly return. If i were him i would say yes in a heart beat. Allison Mack wont be back for sure Chloe will either leave or die this season and by the looks of the visions chloe will die. Tess well they’ll probably want her back since she is a major part of the show now. Also Smallville could want to do more then 10 seasons if the cw wants to keep it for a while, what if in like 2 years Smallville is in its 11th season and it goes as long as ER that would be awsome.

  28. Alyssia says:

Glad to see that Smallville is doing well. I was worried about its move to Friday night but if it can keep growing its fanbase/ratings then maybe we will see a Season 10.

  29. KVac says:

Smallville is awesome…This is the best year yet out the gate in my opinion but they got to put them on Wednesday night CW or Tuesday or Thursday…heck even do Smallville reruns during those times while leaving new ones on Friday…these ratings are awesome but on a two-nights dude…it would be legend..wait for it..

  30. ryan says:
