UPDATED TV Ratings Sunday: World Series Has Most Watched Game Since 2004

Posted on 02 November 2009 by Bill Gorman

yankees phillies game 4

Due to the nature of live sports programming the ratings for  Fox (Football overrun, World Series Game 4) are approximate and subject to significant revisions in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

Scoreboard FOX ABC CBS NBC Uni
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 7.7/19 3.4/8 2.2/5 1.4/4 0.7/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 6.8/18 2.8/8 1.3/4 1.1/3 1.7/2
Total Viewers (million) 22.133 10.440 9.945 4.085 1.962

Fox and the Yankees ran past their competition last night as a football overrun plus the World Series Game 4 boosted them to a preliminary 7.7 adults 18-49 rating for the night.

Here are some time zone adjusted numbers for the World Series Game 4. They are likely to differ only slightly from the final numbers:

  • Last night’s game ran from 8:19pm – 11:48pm ET and posted 22.8 million Total Viewers, up +47% from last year’s Game 4 (versus 15.5 million total viewers on 10/26/08),
  • The game was the most-watched non-decisive Game 4 in 8 years (versus 10/31/01).
  • Was the most-watched World Series game since Game 4 of 2004 (versus 28.8 million total viewers on 10/27/04).

On a related subject, Fox’s good luck with sports this fall seemed to be holding up very well (including the Green Bay/Minnesota game staying  competitive until late) until A-Rod put the Yankees ahead to stay in the 9th. The Phillies looked like they were about to even the Series 2-2 in a game that went close into the 9th inning, guaranteeing at least 6 games. Now it could end in 5. Of course, since every game from now on is a potential clincher (which boosts ratings) for the Yankees, if the Phillies do manage to string it out  to seven games, ratings could go really big.

Against the World Series, ABC’s women focused line up held up very well, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was up 14% vs. last week to a 3.4 adults 18-49 rating. Desperate Housewives was up 4% to a 4.9 rating and Brothers & Sisters was flat with a 3.3 rating.

CBS fared less well, The Amazing Race was down 6% to a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating. Three Rivers was flat with another anemic 1.7 rating, and Cold Case fell 11% to a 1.6 rating, its lowest ever. Three Rivers and Cold Case were both beaten by NBC’s National Treasure movie. That’s pitiful.

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

For more information see Numbers 101 and Numbers 102.

  • In metered-market households, football ruled the night, with NBC’s 8-11 p.m. average 12.8/21 in the metered markets establishing a 19% margin of victory over CBS’s second-place 10.8/17.

    1. carl says:

      go yankees

    2. Anonymous says:

I’m surprised Desperate has been ticking up the past few episodes – the season has been DEADLY dull. Can’t wait for the plane to crash soon.

Maybe NBC should consider putting Leno on Sundays – that way they can gloat that they were actually competitive with CBS (at least for one night)

    3. Kenny says:

I know nothing about baseball, can someone tell me how many games are suppossed to be? yankees vs phillies

    4. not a parole officer says:

@ Kenny – it’s a best-of=seven series, so the first team to win four games is the winner.

    5. Nick Cage is ratings poison.

    6. Holly says:

Has CBS just given up on Sundays? Why are they keeping 3 Rivers and Cold Case on the air with such horrific numbers?

    7. Julia says:

Why didn’t NBC air football last night? Do the NFL and MLB have rules about not airing against each other during the World Series?

    8. Bill Gorman says:

Semi-complete show ratings table has now been posted.

    9. Kenny says:

Thank u not I was wondering that because Tuesday is supposed to be V’s premiere and with that Baseball ratings ABC can wait nothing from the series

    10. What are the x’s on fox for after 9pm

    11. Bill Gorman says:

Julia, no rules, but someone posted a while ago that SNF has not in the past gone up against the World Series (although I didn’t check that).

    12. Julia says:

Kenny, while I think V is probably DOA no matter what, you’d better be rooting for the Yankees tonight if you don’t want to worry about it going up against baseball. :)

    13. Manar says:

So glad DH was up this week in the 18-49 demo and against the World Series! Even if it’s up a tick. The new season has been amazing so far! A HUGE improvement from last season! Hope this (not this comment) spreads to old DH fans so they can get back to watch the show. Hope to see a raise next week, too. :)

    14. Bill Gorman says:

5506 look directly under the table.

    15. Chris says:

Wish brothers and sisters would improve! And I keep getting the annoying iPhone theme on my desktop, in Firefox and Chrome

    16. Bill Gorman says:

Julia, V is on Tuesday. World Series Game 6 (if needed) would be on Wednesday.

    17. For 7 o’clock on fox that is really big for ratings :D

    18. Martie says:

So if Yankees wins another game “Bones” and “Fringe” will be aired on 5th November?

    19. cool says:

so National Treasure on NBC beat Cold Case? wow… just wow.

    20. ryan says:

ekk, i see brothers and Sisters had a little bit of a drop!! love that show tho.

    21. Romo posted that they’d opted out of head-to-head vs. the World Series for a while, and that the “Thursday night” kickoff game in September (giving them an extra game that week) effectively had replaced that airing. Like Bill, I didn’t check :-)

    22. So when football ended on fox did they go straight to the World Series

    23. no, they went straight to a.) the end of another game and then to the OT at 7:30p, and then to the World Series pregame at 8pm (last night’s game started @8:20). The numbers above are NOT time zone adjusted for the World series, though we hope to see those numbers shortly.

    24. John says:

Amazing Race held up well against super stiff competition, especially since CBS had no four o’clock game.

    25. Andrea says:

      Holly,

Isn’t CBS is some pissing contest with FOX over who will cancel a show first?

    26. Tom says:

I read in a comment about a plane crash on DH…was that just a metaphor, or is that really an upcoming plot device. Wisteria lane is the most dangerous place on tv!

    27. My computer is pretty slow, sorry for the double comments

    28. Andrea, Dollhouse got yanked from the schedule. CBS wins the pissing contest :-)

    29. My computer is pretty slow, sorry for the double comments.

    30. CSM says:

      @ Martie -

If Yankees wrap it up tonight, tomorrow night FOX has new SYTYCD as scheduled since no game would have been there anyway. Wednesday and Thursday would be repeats though since games 6 and 7 might have aired then. Barring a last second change, 2 repeats of Glee would air on Wed and a repeat of Bones and Fringe would air on Thursday. So baseball or not, new episodes of these 3 shows won’t be back until next week.

    31. Holly says:

      @Andrea,

Both shows got beat by a repeat of an old Nicholas Cage movie, and one that’s been on cable ad nauseum nonetheless! How long do they really want to hold out?

    32. Bill Gorman says:

Andrea, the “pissing contest” may be my imagination. Fox did tout “no cancellations this fall”, but the CBS response to it was my guess.

    33. Dan says:

Three Rivers should get the axe this week. Time to return Flashpoint.

    34. TommyK says:

Holly, I agree. I figured this week, they just aired both shows because they figured, why launch a new line-up opposite the World Series. But really: how can CBS even go on another WEEK like this?

    35. Trivia: Jon Turtletaub who along with Carol Barbee (Exec Producer for 3 Rivers) executive produced Jericho was the producer for the movie National Treasure.

    36. Jon says:

FOX stormed the ratings but ABC held up pretty well, NBC did poorly but it’s only a one-off and they’ll be back dominating on Sundays, CBS had another pitiful Sunday, Three Rivers continues to lose steam while Cold Case held up pretty well considering it’s got such a weak lead in. CBS needs to fix 9-11pm as it’s ruining their average.

I bet FOX are praying that The Yankees lose either today or tommorrow so that they can continue to reap the benefit.

    37. dave c. says:

Favre Vs. Vikings was astronomical in the overrun. I expect the 10 o’clock hour of baseball was higher than the 8-10 portion as well. Good for Fox.

World Series vs a decent MNF match tonight featuring the undefeated Saints. My guess is baseball edges football tonight but only because I don’t expect the football game to be close. I’ll be interested to see how the relative popularity of the NFL regular season versus baseballs biggest team on baseball’s biggest stage. If the NFL wins, that’s a little bit sad for America’s pastime. I know the NFL won big yesterday but that game was special, and if it were head to head with baseball, some of those 30 million would’ve been watching baseball instead.

    38. @Robert’s Comment “Andrea, Dollhouse got yanked from the schedule. CBS wins the pissing contest :-)

      Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was funny.

    39. Dan says:

Jon – This season CBS could move Cold Case to 9 and air Flashpoint at 10 as early as December. That may help a bit.

    40. Holly says:

^Right, but why wait so long that they’ll only get a couple of episodes of Flashpoint in before the winter hiatus?

    41. Jose says:

No Sunday Night Football during the World Series is one of the unwritten agreements between sports leagues.

The other being no NBA basketball games on the Monday of the NCAA Basketball Championship game.

    42. cool says:

Is that a season high for DH? and a series low for CC?

    43. Manar says:

No, no, it’s this season’s disaster episode. :) I’m really excited, even though it’s far fetched. It should bring in stronger ratings, hopefully.

Also, speaking of the disaster episode, the man who voices Homer Simpson is going to guest star in the episode. :)

    44. Ted says:

      Hooray for sports!

    45. Manar says:

Oh, btw, my previous comment is the answer to Tom’s question. :)

    46. Andrea says:

      Good points everyone.

My only other guess is that 1) they don’t want to piss off Alex O/Moonlight fans and wanted to show, in good faith, that they gave the medical drama a chance, or 2) Flashpoint was not ready to be added to the schedule.

    47. Mr November says:

AAAAAAH. Forgot the other 3 were even broadcasting last night. Yanks, Curb and Mad Men.

      That’s a tv night.

    48. gmyers says:

why oh why is three rivers still on? I totally think that CBS is waiting for something to be ready to air. Like Miami Trauma is not ready? I know NBC just threw up Mercy and is working on it while it airs. How about something? Do you think CBS is thinking “Well this is a lot better than the Hallmark hall of fame movies did? Do they want sports to end before they make any decisions. With Football and baseball maybe there are just no expectations whatsoever?

    49. ron says:

Numb3rs should take Three Rivers’ slot, with Flashpoint filling in Friday.

    50. gmyers says:

Flashpoint is ready to go! It has episodes that are finished and ready to air. But they would never start that against big sports events.

    51. I’ll be pretty surprised if Numb3rs moved to Sundays at 9pm. Medium would surprise me less…

    52. romo says:

      To dave c:
The baseball game will easily beat the MNF game tonite.
MNF will probably be around 11M while baseball about 20M id say.
2 small market teams/regular season game/on cable cant compete with a possible world series clincher/yanks/philly market/network tv.

    53. Jon says:

The only way at the moment that CBS could possibly fix Sundays is if they bid for Sunday Night Football, I think NBC has them for a while but it wouldn’t surprise if CBS make a bid when the rights come out as it would gurantee a weekly win both in viewers and demo but the disadvantage would be they would have to give up Afternoon Football.

    54. cool says:

Too bad CBS didn’t order a new cycle of The Amazing Race

    55. Paul PT says:

If CBS not cancel last season Without a Trace, and order a final half-season, they could cancel Tree rivers now and put WAT at 10 pm.

But this season CBS don’t have movies to air in the CBS Sunday Night Movie block?

TAR is doing very well in the ratings this season!

ABC lineup ir rising a little thick by thick. this is a good sign i think!

    56. Catherine says:

My guess about Three Rivers, which is now watchable, is that CBS may be getting enough shows in the can to justify a DVD set. Maybe there is some deal that we don’t know about on the number of shows CBS has greenlighted.

Agree with earlier poster. Why waste a show that you want to succeed on a night when a huge chunk of the demo audience is watching sports anyway. After all the Flashpoint audience is probably the World Series audience.

National Treasure probably had a kid/family friendly audience. I know it has been on cable a bunch but has it been on network lately?

    57. johnthemon says:

      @JR

      “Nic Cage is ratings poison”

How well can you reasonably suspect a movie that is five years old to perform up against one of the most watched baseball games in years.

NBC threw in the towel last night, they’re probably happy it peaked at a 1.9!

    58. X-R.G. says:

Enjoying the world series games seems that there is nothing but garbage on Sun Nights…

    59. daniel patrick says:

how come NBC didnt have a game on?

    60. romo says:

      To dan p:
Romo posted that they’d opted out of head-to-head vs. the World Series for a while, and that the “Thursday night” kickoff game in September (giving them an extra game that week) effectively had replaced that airing.

    61. romo says:

      Favre got an 18.3.
Told whomever it was that he wouldnt beat 29.6 da bears/fins MNF game.

    62. sdf says:

      @CSM

According to the Futon Critic and TV Guide, new episodes of “Bones” and “Fringe” are supposed to air on Thursday if there’s no baseball. Both are usually correct when it comes to scheduling.

    63. Tom says:

I heard some comments predicting “V” to be DOA come tomorrow. I disagree. Anyone who has watched 10 minutes of ABC in the past month has seen at least one promo for “V”. ABC has promoted this show so heavily that I’d guarantee a minimum 3.0 demo and 10m viewers tuning in, with a big possibility to go even higher. Whether viewers stick around is another thing, but the fact its a remake of a highly rated 80’s miniseries coupled with ABC’s relentless promotion, I think it will premiere well. I know I plan to watch!

    64. AlleyCat says:

@danielpatrick – I think some others already mentioned that there’s a handshake agreement between the leagues that football won’t go up against the World Series.

God, I hate the Yankees SO much, but they sure are good for ratings. Best ratings since Boston pulled their 2004 miracle? Good for FOX.

    65. rodshooter says:

I tell you what, pretty damn embarrassing that a regular season game got a Championship Round type rating for the overrun and the World Series couldn’t even touch anywhere near that. I mean come on a series with the Yanks should not be barely getting over 20 million viewers. This is still not a good rating, this is unacceptable. One sport is clicking on all cylinders and the other is struggling to get ratings for their season finales. It was 30 years ago when the Yanks and Dodgers peaked at 50 million viewers.

The World Series is really starting to make last year’s World Series ratings look really good right now. 15.5 million viewers in a series not involving the Yanks or Sawx is pretty amazing.

Baseball your ass needs a salary cap!

    66. 7of9 says:

I’m glad Brothers & Sisters has fallen some. It was always dramatic but the past 2 seasons have turned into the most OTT, over blown hour on TV. What would the writers do if they couldn’t do a “fight at the dinner table” scene every show? I’d like to see it get axed. The actors could really do better than what they are having to work with right now.

Cold Case down, sad about that. Guess it’s over this year for sure. Oh well, will enjoy it while it lasts. The Amazing Race is still great, I like most of the people on it this time around too which is unusual. Good team went home last night though which was a downer.

I thought Three Rivers was already canned? If not, it’s time!

    67. JR says:

Would be cool for “V” to premiere with decent ratings (timeslot considered). You seriously could not not know it was coming on, with all the advertising and promoting during ABC’s top-rated shows and such. ABC looks to be puttigna lot into the hype, so hopefully it can deliver. Hope it garners enough interest to return in the spring.

    68. Mark says:

Did anyone notice the football over run numbers. That was form the Packers vikings game those nubmer where huge. While the world series numbers were still really good. Football still rules!!

    69. richard says:

Didn’t NBC make a movie mini series out of V? and when it got good ratings they turned it into a series that lasted 4-5 episodes?

    70. Dan says:

Nope, to every one who thinks Three Rivers has been axed, guess what. Its Not. Me and everyone else (Including Robert and Bill) never would have thought the series would have made it to 5 episodes. I guessed 4 and it would be pulled before sweeps. Its not like CBS doesnt have any dramas ready to air. They have Flashpoint, 9 episodes have been produced and ready since May. I think its only because of Alex O’Loughlin and Moonlight that the series is still around. 7 million viewers after a 10 million Amazing Race and 1.8 in the demos is awful. Not to mention it brings down Cold Case (which does rise a little) Its the first time since 2005 since CBS has waited until November to cancel a series and if the show somehow makes it to its November 22nd airing (and gets axed after November 23) it will beat Threshold.

    71. Jon says:

Three Rivers is ruining CBS’ Sunday average and I think to a extend so is Cold Case, I don’t get the love for Alex O’Loughlin, he’s a good but not great actor and I think the fans seem to like him because he’s hot and I doubt Moonlight would have benefitted from the vampire craze either.

Three Rivers is on borrowed time and it should be axed, CBS seem to taking their time considering it’s doing awful.

    72. Bfan says:

3Rivers has totally blown my under of 4 shows.

I don’t get how CC can have a 1.6 demo and 8+ million viewers.

I’d think moving it to 9 would up it’s numbers but maybe CBS doesn’t want to. Maybe they just want to run it into the ground and give it a clean cancellation. Most of the people who want to watch CC, just can’t stay up that late.

CC was pretty good last night. Probably the best of the season so far.

    73. ~Rennie says:

Andrea says: My only other guess is that 1) they don’t want to piss off Alex O/Moonlight fans and wanted to show, in good faith, that they gave the medical drama a chance, or 2) Flashpoint was not ready to be added to the schedule.

I think that CBS “pissed off” the Moonlight fans 2 years ago and they don’t really care whether we are pissd off now….but that said, The word I get from CBS is this: 1) They knew Three Rivers would not do particularly well against SNF, and planned for it. 2) CBS ordered 13 eps of Three Rivers AND plans to order the back 9; 3) CBS wants Alex O’Lochlin to be a star; they will stick with him like they did with Simon Baker and the Mentalist; 4) Every week someone here proclaims Three Rivers demise. I think it’s premature. If there are no Sundays where it is off due to something else, the last of the 13 eps will run on 12/27/09. Unless I’m really wrong (I can be….) I don’t think we will hear anything about Three Rivers being cancelled until January. BTW, last night’s episode was better than any I have seen; got a little back story on Andy and his wife; some nice humor with the Sudanese guy who needs a heart….it softened up the seriousness of the show a bit. ~Rennie

    74. Shaz says:

From what I remember, Moonlight was cancelled mid-May 2008. The actors were released from their contracts at the end of June (after which there would be no resurrecting the show without having to re-negotiate all the contracts). Just after that, it was announced that Alex O’Loughlin signed a one-year talent-holding contract with CBS. That contract expired June/July 2009 but he was already cast in Three Rivers by then. If CBS really wants to hang on to O’Loughlin, maybe they want to get him signed to a new contract before they cancel Three Rivers.

    75. Holly says:

Are you in the business that you hear things from CBS?

And CBS kind of stuck by Simon Baker, but that didn’t stop them from canceling Smith after only three episodes.

    76. Jon says:

Wasn’t Ray Liotta the star of Smith, I thought Simon Baker was more of a co-star.

Unless CBS want to ruin their chances of winning the season then I cannot see Three Rivers getting the backorder 9 episodes.

    77. Shaz says:

Where is the word from CBS coming from?

“1) They knew Three Rivers would not do particularly well against SNF, and planned for it.”

Three Rivers’ competition (as far as demographics go) isn’t SNF, it’s Desperate Housewives. The mostly male audience for football isn’t going to watch Three Rivers when football is over; they’ll watch Fox.

“3) CBS wants Alex O’Lochlin to be a star; they will stick with him like they did with Simon Baker and the Mentalist;”

But CBS didn’t keep Simon Baker’s badly performing shows on the air. CBS kept cancelling his shows and casting him in new ones until he found a hit.

    78. Jon says:

Simon Baker got lucky getting out of Smith because he went into The Devil Wears Prada straight after although I imagine he was cast in that before he was cast in Smith.

    79. D says:

Well this is interesting. On November 29th(Sunday) they are airing a Hallmark movie from 9-11

    80. D says:

Well this is interesting. They are airing a Hallmark movie on Sunday November 29th from 9-11. So Three Rivers & Cold Case will be preempted. Hmm.

    81. Dan says:

Rennie – CBS is ready to air new Flashpoint. It would be 1 thing if they had ordered the new 13 episode third season but CBS still has 9 episodes ready to go and by the time their done airing, the new 13 episodes can premiere. With a 22 epsiode Flashpoint season as well as Miami Trauma and The Bridge, why is Three Rivers still around.

    82. D says:

Oops! Sorry for the double post. My comment wasn’t coming thru.

    83. Jon says:

Don’t CBS prempted 9-11pm for Hallmark Movies and Jesse Stone during the year anyway? The Hallmark Movies have mixed success but the last Jesse Stone did 15m but the demos were ancient.

Dan has a point, CBS has midseason replacements already and it doesn’t need to keep Three Rivers, they’re not NBC or The CW.

    84. John says:

Any chance for the mobile website on your computer? No offence, but it looks so much better. :|

    85. Moose says:

The ratings come as no surprise to me. Big market teams in the World Series mean bigger ratings.

It will be real interesting tonight. Two relatively small market NFL teams going up against two large market baseball teams. If both games are competitive, I think MLB will get the better ratings.

    86. Bill Gorman says:

John, we turned off the mobile theme earlier today because too many people “standard” browsers were seeing the mobile theme, but we’d like to use it. We will monitor the bugfixes and hope to turn it back on when it’s updated and fixed.

    87. Joe says:

Baseball desperately needs a salary cap. It’s just so dull to see big market teams when almost every year. It was refreshing to at least see a team like Tampa Bay in it. This year, it’s two incredibly predictable teams, one of which is probably the most hated sports franchise of all sports (outside of its own market, of course).

    88. Riff Rafferty says:

Rennie’s post gave me my first LOL of the day. If that were any funnier, it would be an episode of “Three Rivers.” Yes, I’m sure CBS is picking up the Back 9 of “Three Rivers” as we speak. And they’re sticking by “Three Rivers” to support their talent-free star. Just like they did with Simon Baker… whose show can actually hold its lead-in. (Never mind that transparent Ausiello blind item from last year that was clearly about Simon Baker and “The Mentalist” and, said to the effect, that CBS didn’t want Baker to star in “The Mentalist” because of the failure of “Smith.”)

Speaking of “Three Rivers,” I liked how last night’s episode started with a crime investigation scene. Nice try, guys, trying to make it look like another Bruckheimer procedural and trick the Crime Broadcasting System audience into not changing the channel on it. Nice try.

    89. ~Rennie says:

Sorry, I should have said that CBS pissed off Moonlight fans 17 months and 2 weeks ago to be acurate. =)

Some of what I said came from friends that work in programming at CBS, some was my own opinion, some came from TV Guide, some of it from blogs. So various places.

The only point I was trying to make was that “I think” that it will be January before anyone knows if CBS will stick with Three Rivers or not; that the weekly predictions here of it’s demise might be premature.

    90. John Themon, I’m not sure why you decided to defend Nicolas Cage, but I will say I made that comment before the chart was posted and saw it beat 3R and Cold Case. Football Night in America dragged down the ratings, where I presumed it was the opposite.

    91. Twogames117 says:

I have to agree with some of you guys baseball really needs a salary cap. I loved seeing Tampa Bay in the World Series last year, it was refreshing and unpredictable. These major markets getting in is boring. I haven’t watched more than an hour of the games in this series as much as I love baseball.

Football is so damn unpredictable and you can have two medium sized markets in Milwaukee and Minnesota gather up 30 million viewers. Baseball should be doing the same for a series with the Brewers and Twins. Baseball used to be so unpredictable back in the day before the strike. I think more than ever people are growing tired of seeing the Yanks in the World Series, if there was a salary cap then the Yanks would be a lot more interesting to watch but until then no they won’t be to.

    92. Mr November says:

Salary cap?? In baseball?? Never! Slot the draft to control salries is the key.

    93. amyvil says:

One issue which has not been discussed here, and which of course is not quantifiable in terms of ratings, is CBS’s partnership with Donate Life America, an organization which seeks to raise organ donation awareness. I believe CBS is firmly committed to this partnership and created and continues to support Three Rivers in order to shine a positive light on this area of medicine. For this reason, as well as many others, I continue to remain cautiously optimistic about Three Rivers.

    94. andrew says:

What is with all of the hate towards Cold Case?

Granted, I’m not a regular viewer, but I love watching it late at night on TNT.

What they need to do is move CC back one hour. It’s been on for 7 years, it’s basically a procedural. it would be a better lead-in to TR, which I saw for the first time last night…BORING.

What about moving CC to TAR’s slot, and moving TAR up, followed by TR?

I’d hate to see CC get cancelled without a proper Series Finale. It’s a great show.

    95. Shaz says:

Amyvil, why do you think CBS is so committed to Donate Life when Alex O’Loughlin has said that he was the one who approached Donate Life about the partnership with Three Rivers and made that partnership one of the conditions for him doing the show? CBS is only committed to Donate Life in so far as they want to keep their star happy.

    96. Mark says:

Desperate Housewives is one of the shows that our whole family cuddles up in the living to watch every sunday. Our other family shows are Melrose Place, Eastwick, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Cougar Town, Private Practice, Brothers and Sisters, Community, and Sons of Anarchy.

    97. Lucia says:

We do love Desperate H. too.
And I think this season the writers are doing a great job with the show.
Amyvil , that Organ donation excuse is getting old . I think Organ Donation is a great cause , but I am tired of reading about it each time Three Rivers gets worse ratings each week.
I think CBS only cares about ratings. And they put Alex in Three Rivers , thinking woman would dump DH because of Alex and Moonlight , not because they cared about Donate Life. But it is not working that way , and i am glad because DH is a great show , and remember that it is against sports too , but still getting great numbers.

    98. Brando says:

Yanks in 6. This Wed. night: WS Ring #27. It’s destiNY. You don’t bet against it.

    99. Theoacme says:

      Favre uber alles, 2-0…

…here are the other possible dates, as of now, where Brett Favre can affect prime time ratings (not will, but might – given the schedule, I’d say less than a 5 percent chance):

      Dec 6 – Sunday, 4:15 – at Arizona
      Dec 20 – Sunday, 8:20 – at Carolina
      Dec 28 – Monday, 8:30 – at Chicago

Of course, NBC may flex out of the Vikings – Carolina game, and FOX or CBS may move another 1:00 game to 4:15 – I don’t think NBC will be allowed to flex in another Vikings game by FOX or CBS.

If Carolina is going for a playoff spot, and the Vikings are also going for home fiels, this game will be more likely to be a 800 pound gorilla than I predicted above.

    100. starmud says:

housewives, so far, this season has been great. the plots so far are progressing much better than last season, or even any of the past 3-4 seasons. which had really lame plots… any of the past new neighbor plot lines have been really predictable and too over the top.

the applebottoms were an example of this, katherines introductory season has a lame ending, predictable plot. Topped out by last season with dave moving in, which was a horrible plot.

I love the dynamics going on with the new neighbors not so much wracking up personal drama but facilitating drama between the neighbors.

    101. romo says:

      To Theoacme:
FOX protected week 12 bears/vikings so that game cant get flexed to SNF.
Every other 1:00/4:05/4:15 vikings game is eligible for flex.
Of course a team can only appear in primetime 6 times.

    102. Marie says:

We do love Desperate H. too.
“And I think this season the writers are doing a great job with the show.

I agree with you Lucia. I get tired of hearing these excuses as to why it is doing poorly. The show is bad, it’s bringing down CC’s numbers as well which was already teetering on the edge. All that matters is the advertisers/ratings. I am baffled as to why it is still around at this point.

    103. Roger says:

Does anyone think that CC will be cancled before May? Or even before 2010?

    104. sam says:

Just as i predicted earlier this season, the “Grey’s Anatomy”/”Desperate Housewives” gap will minimize and it has. This week “Housewives” beats GA in total viewers, and is only a tick behind in the Demos. I predict “Grey’s” will continue to sink with the absense of Heigl, while Housewives will continue to increase with the upcoming stunts their pulling (plane crash).

    105. Bill Gorman says:

Roger, I’d be surprised if CC doesn’t run all the way through to May, 2010, but I can’t see it coming back next fall.

    106. hookedonmick says:

I like 3R but if it were to be cancelled it would not be the end of the world. I expected more from this show. This is my question…..the ratings are pretty much the same as the Friday night ratings. Why are they acceptable on Friday but not on Sunday?

    107. Ralph says:

@sam Heigl is still on GA. I think who you mean is T.R. Knight.

    108. forg says:

Amazing Race did well given the weak Sunday line up of CBS over all. FOX will win November sweeps if CBS don’t fix their Sunday 9-11 slots anytime soon.

      ABC’s performance was great too.

    109. ABCHasProblems says:

      7pm Breakdown:
      “FOX Football Overrun 11.2 30 30.57″
      “ABC America’s Funniest Home Videos 1.6 4 6.46″

What are the odds of AFV moving to Wednesdays @ 8 in the winter? Considering the fact that it’s NEVER promoted by ABC whatsoever, those are semi-decent numbers for going up against such a huge football game. Even American Idol doesn’t perform that well! I think AFV would pull at least a 1.8 demo going up against the Wednesday edition of Idol and over a 2 demo against Glee (if it moves to 8 in the Spring).

Besides, I think Castle would do well on Sundays @ 8 after Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in the spring. It’s ratings have been very consistent this season, unlike Samantha Who? last fall. Castle doesn’t need the big DWTS lead-in, while SW? desperately needed it and proved it would fail otherwise.

    110. lainey says:

This is interesting. Three Rivers has not done well, Ok. If CBS cancels it, or doesn’t cancel it, what’s the big deal? Many of you like to laugh when some people get outraged when a show they like is canceled, but now some of you seem to be getting outraged that Three Rivers is still on. Maybe CBS has decided to get it’s money’s worth out of the show, and not waste some other programming-at least right now-if it is only going to go up against two or three other monster ratings shows. If you know that your show is going up against other ratings monsters already, what do you do? Do you lower your expectations, at least temporarily? Do you keep on spending money on things that die when going up against that kind of competition? I know NBC has taken it on the chin about Leno, but maybe there is something to be said, in this current economic climate anyway, about not throwing good money after bad, as the saying goes. CBS is doing well as a whole, so perhaps they are just taking their time deciding what the best thing to do is concerning Sunday night in the future.

    111. Heradite says:

      Viewers:
      FOX: 47%
      ABC: 22%
      CBS: 21%
      NBC: 9%

FOX almost had half the viewers! Wow…

      18-49 Rating:
      FOX: 52%
      ABC: 23%
      CBS: 15%
      NBC: 10%

And FOX claims over half the adult rating. Good job FOX! And amazing for ABC for having almost a quarter!

    112. lainey says:

I have thought that Castle might appeal to the DH and B&S audience. They could probably move AFV to another night, and move the “Home” show up, and put Castle before DH. It might would work. On the other hand, since Castle is making slow but sure progress on Monday, moving it might lose some viewers, if they watch other stuff on Sunday, like sports, etc.

    113. ABCHasProblems says:

Remember that Murder She Wrote was successful in this timeslot for many years on CBS, so it’s possible that Castle could end up performing decently in this timeslot as well.

    114. moraliste says:

The Yankees are really an awesome team. I thought the Phillies might win, but the talent is unspeakable on this NY team. We are seeiung the two best teams of the past decade go at each other, and the numbers are proving it.

    115. ShannyBoy says:

Great numbers for the World Series! :) I’m betting the Wednesday Night game will be about the same or maybe even higher.

And for the people claiming the WS numbers are bad (comparing it to a VERY uncommon football game) that’s ridiculous. Aside from the Super Bowl, no other sport has done as good in recent years. (Maybe March Madness? I doubt it though)

You just can’t say that the series would be better off with small market teams. It’s like saying Fox is better off with brand new episodes of Dollhouse on Friday nights as opposed to, say, re-runs of House… :p

    116. vsaint says:

Wow, that garbage Three Rivers is still on, can’t believe that many people are still watching a show that’s going to go on the list of worst shows ever.
      I’m a 27 Male and i watched Desperate Housewives 1st.
During commericals i flipped between Fox Baseball (i’m a huge baseball fan) and National Treasure movie, which i’ve seen a few times already.

People are going crazy because Sunday is the most expensive night for advertisers, from the estimates of the article posted here recently.
Your bleeding money with no long term plan, except NCIS: Miami Trauma or CSI:Miami Trauma there midseason.

    117. RafeDaniels says:

I don’t understand why CBS puts “Three Rivers” after “The Amazing Race”. I watch TAR so after I watch such a fast-paced show the last thing I want to watch is a sappy medical drama. I switch to FOX for “Family Guy” & “American Dad” for some laughs!

    118. tom says:

DH to me hasnt been good this season so I can understand why the show is sinking in the ratings. Keep in mind that the season finale of the first season drew over 30 million viewers and now they only average between 13-14 million and are in 16th place so far this season for total viewers(last season they were in 10th place). Maybe a plane crash will enable DH to clean house and get rid of alot characters that are way past their welcome(Katharine, Karl, Orson, the Gay Guys(they never did develop this couple), Susan(just kidding), Lynette’s Unborn Twins(I hate this story line)) .

This is a show in DESPERATE need of a revamping, the ladies are beginning to show their age

      This

    119. tom says:

Andrew, I agree , I Love Cold Case and it is one of my favorite shows. The Show has been on for 7 seasons and up to this season was actually always a Consistant Ratings Performer and was a Regular Top 20 Show For 6 Seasons. Last season the show finished at #18 in total viewers and while everyone in here including the two who run this board constantly said the show would be cancelled, I boldy predicted that the show would be renewed and I was right(I sadly do predict that this will be its final season).

I have never understood the animosity that alot of people in this chat room have for Cold Case But I also hope that they give this outstanding show the proper series finale that it deserves. Let Lilly Finally Get her man and let her find Happiness.
I will Miss this show and the great songs that each episode brought with it!

    120. Alex O'Loughlin's Biggest Fan says:

“Heigl is still on GA. I think who you mean is T.R. Knight.”

Heigl is still on GA, but right now her character has been temporarily written off the show while she’s off filming a movie or something.

    121. crystalabell says:

Three Rivers is getting better and CBS will stick with it until January. I think that if the ratings go up a touch this month that they will order the rest of the season.

    122. Kelvin says:

Actually for all the haters DH has been working the ratings back up and are now #11 for the current season i agree i cant wait for the plane crash to kill off old characters that are annoying aka orson and possibly katherine although i love her storyline this season idk what else they could do after this storyline is over and hopefully she wont fall into unbelievably boring like last season. This season has been great and the plane crash can serve as a way to reenergize the show if the right people die lol this is 100% better then the 5th season which I hated. It’s dark like the 4th but the storylines are weaving better together like the 1st. and we arent gitting a borin applewhite/dave mystery either. This might be the BEST SEASON YET depending on how the storylines keep building. This ends my rany by the way cause this is a ratings sight lol. 14.2 Million in final #’s DH is coming back!!!!

    123. Kelvin says:

Rant my mistake lol and also the gay couple never really liked them they don”t bring anything to the table i say kill them and orson off now. and let tom drop out of college take the realtors of the street place and let katherine die in the finale I can see their laying groundwork for katherine and angie’s relationship killin her in the planecrash may be too soon lol

    124. JR says:

NBC had two very successful mini-series with ‘V” (two parts) and “V: The Final Battle” (three parts). The series aired 19 episodes- it started off with so-so ratings (on Friday nights), but ended up averaging just a 12.8 rating for the season (back when millions of viewers was not the primary reported tidbit).

    125. MichaelC2B says:

Wow – I have never seen people talk about and analyze a show so much while claiming that they hate it. If you are not watching Three Rivers, how do you know if it is a good show or not?

    126. Shaz says:

Why do you assume that the people who hate Three Rivers haven’t seen it? Everyone who posted about actually hating Three Rivers (as opposed to just commenting on the low ratings) has said that they watched one or more episodes.

    127. Shaz says:

For the people who say Three Rivers is one of the best medical dramas ever: Have YOU seen Grey’s Anatomy or House or ER or Chicago Hope or St. Elsewhere or basically any other medical drama that was successful?
