ESPN’s Monday Night Football Wins the Night in Key Male Demos
Last night, ESPN’s Monday Night Football game – the undefeated New Orleans Saints’ 35-27 home victory over the Atlanta Falcons – earned an 8.9 rating, representing an average of 8,800,000 households (12,374,000 viewers – P2+). MNF led all the night’s programs (broadcast or cable) in all key male demos and people 18-34, and it is the eighth most-viewed program on cable television in 2009, surpassed only by other MNF telecasts.
For 2009, the nine MNF telecasts represent cable’s nine biggest audiences in terms of both household impressions and total viewers. Through eight weeks (nine games) of the NFL season, ESPN’s MNF is averaging a 10.5 rating and 10,381,000 households (14,422,000 P2+), up 16%, 18% and 18%, respectively, from last season.

ESPN.com had 85.9 million page views to NFL content accessed via computers and mobile devices for Monday through Tuesday at noon — up 27% from the comparable time period last year. Specifically, page views for the NFL section on computers and mobile were up 3% from last year. Additionally, ESPN.com streamed 2.6 million NFL related videos — up 102% from last year.
NEXT WEEK ON MNF
Next week’s MNF matchup on ESPN Nov. 9 will be a showcase of top AFC teams when Ben Roethlisberger leads the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) to Denver to face wide receiver Brandon Marshall and the Broncos (6-1) at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Monday Night Countdown pre-game (7 p.m.) and MNF will be part of ESPN’s week-long plans (Nov. 4-11) to salute Veteran’s Day. America’s Heroes: A Salute to Our Veterans will include live shots from Iraq during the MNF game and Steelers’ four-time Super Bowl champion Rocky Bleier on Countdown discussing being injured in the Vietnam War and his return to the NFL.
Last night’s game was competitive till the end, so I’m not surprised by the ratings.
Jim, those numbers were below average for MNF this season though.
Yeah, the obvious reason is the World Series luring most sports fans away, however, that wasn’t why I didn’t watch. Both teams are good, but I just find them both very boring as well.

I predicted about 11M….last year i think they went against a ws too & got 11.6M.
They are not superstar teams and there are no crossover superstar players like a Favre, Romo, Brady, etc. It’s also too regional for other part of the country to care enough. Most people like myself just wanted to know who won, and didn’t care who won.

Not that it would probably make that much of a difference in the overall national ratings, but as a local living in Biloxi, MS .., how come the New Orleans WDSU television station which carries NBC programming was allowed to push the NBC Monday night lineup of shows to this Saturday night in order to show the Saints/falcon game? Is this allowed all over the country?
Danny, a local broadcast station in each team’s market gets to carry the MNF game, so that only happens in two markets a week.
