PTC hopes to increase Gossip Girl ratings by promoting “threesome” episode

Posted on 03 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

GOSSIP GIRL

Will the Parents Television Council do anything it possibly can to promote ITSELF, even if that is cross-purpose from its stated agenda?

The answer appears to be yes.

I mean c’mon. Hardly anyone was watching Gossip Girl anyway, if your goal is to keep people from watching it, why do anything that draws more  attention to it?

From The Wrap:

The Parents Television Council is threatening to declare war on CW affiliates who broadcast next week’s Very Special Threesome episode of “Gossip Girl.”

In a letter to affiliates obtained by TheWrap, PTC chief Tim Winter blasts the scheduled storyline as “reckless and irresponsible” and claims the show is “expressly targeted to impressionable teenagers.” The head of the right-wing political action group says CW affiliates which air the episode will be “complicit in establishing a precedent and expectation that teenagers should engage in behaviors heretofore associated primarily with adult films.”

I love the 1st Amendment. it makes people crazy.

  2. Cullen says:

The PTC is a despicable organization and if any parents/networks/affiliates/politicians out there listen to them then they should be ashamed.

  3. Bill Gorman says:

Perhaps those Gossip Girl episode screener DVDs sent to the PTC board members homes by the CW’s PR department weren’t wasted after all ;)

  4. Cullen says:

That would be the first misfire of the year by CW PR.

  5. you say misfire; we say worked brilliantly to bolster Gossip Girl back up over 2 million viewers ;-)

  6. Robert Watson says:

    I wouldn’t bank on it, Robert S.

  7. Robert W. probably should’ve said worked brilliantly to HELP CW’s chances of bolstering GG back over 2 million.

While nothing seems to help GG viewing lately, the PTC complaint is absolutely not going to hurt it any.

  8. Bill Gorman says:

It is amusing that Gossip Girl’s been doing so badly, that Robert Watson’s comment could be construed either way ;)

  9. Cullen says:

it can also be distorted depending on your view of banks

Isn’t Gossip Girl still the CW’s number 1 show in terms of W18-34?

  10. ABCHasProblems says:

The PTC’s “promotion” could have the Married with Children effect and substantially increase GG’s ratings. Besides, GG is a 9pm show–not an 8pm “Family Hour” show. These people need to get a life!

  11. j says:

Actually, with yesterday’s episode, Vampire Diaries has pulled in with a slim lead over Gossip Girl in W 18-34. I’m guessing that lead will increase but Gossip Girl will stay comfortably ahead of the rest of the net’s shows.

  12. Bill Gorman says:

Cullen, we don’t get woment 18-34 averages from Nielsen, but I believe Vampire Diaries is #1 in pretty much every measure for the CW this season. I think America’s Next Top Model is above GG’s W18-34 average. And OTH is not much below it.

  13. johnthemon says:

This isn’t the first time the PTC has targeted Gossip Girl.

  14. 1PartOfA3Some says:

I hate protests about sex, get over it already! If you got to protest why not traget the amount of violence on TV?

  15. bob says:

Thanks PTC! Got it all marked in my diary now as unmissable! ;D

  16. 1PartOfA3Some says:

Who’s going to be part of this 3Some? I don’t really watch GG but I might if it’s the hot people involved…

  17. forg says:

Let’s see if this threesome stunt helps the show’s ratings

  18. Joseph says:

Does the fact that I knew nothing about any threesome episode, have never watched an episode of Gossip Girl, but am curious enough now to tune in to see what all the fuss is about count as helping?

  19. Heradite says:

Say…wasn’t the last time the PTC complained featured in promotional posters that led to a 3 million+ premiere which only fell because the CW aired to many repeats and killed the momentum?

Also how is the PTC right-wing? Conservatives hate big government, and the PTC seeks to make it more powerful by advocating a more involved government that censors “indecent” things. Thus it would be nature for true conservatives to hate the PTC.

  20. Anil says:

The 3some is going to be hot. Its going to be Dan-Olivia-Vanessa.
Very yucky peoplee butttt im sure it’ll still be hot. :P

  21. Boris says:

I’d be more interested if the threesome involved Wallace Shawn.

  22. Paul says:

Im sure the male teen demo will be bolstered:L
But I have to say the show sucks now, season 1 was great, the 2nd was bearable but the 3rd is just a mess, melrose is a lot better in terms of quality, my series finale was the season premiere.

  23. DenverDean says:

Controversy is good!!! Like the Heroes “leak” about who dies was just another day at the office! The media was all over that today.

  24. forg says:

“The 3some is going to be hot. Its going to be Dan-Olivia-Vanessa.
Very yucky peoplee butttt im sure it’ll still be hot.”

This comment made my day haha

  25. Nightstar says:

“Also how is the PTC right-wing?”

Ring-wing also means conservative, traditional social behavior. Threesomes tend not to fall into that definition. ;-)

  26. TomKH says:

“The 3some is going to be hot. Its going to be Dan-Olivia-Vanessa.
Very yucky peoplee butttt im sure it’ll still be hot.”

Vanessa is the hottest girl on GG.

  27. Shem says:

This is ridiculous; some much love for CRAP. Society is really going nowhere… With shows like Modern Family, Everything on HBO, Dexter etc only paves the way for this ’special’ on GG. The PTC shouldn’t really be surprised by this, however, its A sad day for Broadcast Television.

  28. Jack says:

Wrong, Shem, it’ll be a great day for television… if it actually portrays any sex instead of cutting away and then showing them lying ostensibly naked in bed after. But it won’t, which makes this ridiculous ‘protest’ even more of a joke. In Australia a show with the equivalent of a TV-14 rating can have proper sex scenes, complete with tits, ass… and thrusting. And all conservative groups here ever complain about is Californication (which, yes, is on network TV, with an MA rating and very little cut).

  29. j says:

No. Discounting the last Tuesday-Monday as I don’t feel like calculating them right now,

W 18-34 avgs (6 eps for Thursdays, 7 for others):

    GG 2.80, Vampire 2.72, Model 2.50, 90210 2.34, Hill 2.27, Place 1.68, Super 1.53

I doubt that Model gained .3 on GG with one ep. Or that One Tree Hill gained over half a point on GG. Misinformation.
